"Run-of-mine ore is reduced to 4 per cent on 4 mesh (3/ 16 inch), using four stages of dry crushing. The mill feed is then reduced to 2 per cent on 48 mesh and 60 per cent through 200 mesh, using one stage of ball milling in cyanide solution. During the subsequent treatment about one-tenth of the tonnage is removed as a table concentrate and ground to 77 per cent through 325 mesh. The size of the mill tailing is 66 per cent through 200 mesh.Four stages of ore reduction began when the dry crushing plant at No. 26 Shaft came into operation at a maximum rate of 440 tons an hour on July 31, 1941. A detailed description of the crushing plant was published in C .I .M. Trans., Vol. LVI, 1953.One-stage ball milling in cyanide solution came into full operation on January 11, 1938. The ball milling plant had a capacity of 4800 tons daily when reducing mill feed at 2. 7 per cent on 1/ 4 inch to 54. 3 per cent through 200 mesh. Primary grinding to 60 per cent through 200 mesh commenced May 22, 1945, when the feed was 3 per cent on 4 mesh. Under these conditions the capacity of the ball milling plant is estimated at 4300 tons daily. A description of the 11 Hollinger Crushing and Grinding Plant"" by D. C. This paper, a follow-up to an earlier study, gives the history of Canadian developments in mineral processing from 1921 to the fall of 1964. It deals extensively with comminution and flotation, and then goes on to cover the fields of gravity concentration, magnetic concentration, cyanidation, the processing of uranium ores, and instrumentation. Several outstanding examples of installations are given. The paper concludes with a discussion of present-day trends in mineral processing. Introduction T HE history of the developments in mineral processing in Canada from its earliest times to 1920 has already been published by one of the authors (1). The present paper is thus a logical follow-up to bring this history to date. From 1834 to 1920, mineral processing in Canada, as elsewhere in the world, was in its formative stage. This, however, prepared the ground for developments that have resulted in a mining empire from the Atlantic to the Pacific, a mining empire which could be said to be almost on par with that in the United States.

The Ontario Committee on Taxation is making a comprehensive study of taxation in the Province of Ontario, and in this connection has received representations concerning mining taxation from a number of interested parties. Some of the more important recommendations on mining taxation are reviewed in this article. The object of this paper is to present an analysis of the major problems encountered both in the design and application of downhole drills. Particular reference is made to design features governed by: physical size limitations; metallurgical material standards; physical operating environment; range of commercial materials to be drilled; high power output required, coupled with simplicity from the operating and maintenance viewpoint; and bit design. The history of attempts to develop downhole drills is discussed, and representative mechanical configurations are illustrated. The general design and application aspects of the different types are commented on. The application of this drill type in various commercial fields, such as (a) oil-well drilling, (b) open-pit mining and (c) underground mining, is discussed, along with the limitations presently imposed by the commercial state of the art in the manufacture of accessory equipment; e.g., drill rods, air compressors, mountings, etc. Suggestions on the possible future direction of the development and application of this tool are put forth.

Vast quantities of cosmic material, ranging in size from fine dust to large meteorites and planetoids, have been colliding with and accumulating on the earth since its origin 4.5 billion years ago. There are less than twenty well preserved meteorite craters and Jess than thirty fossil craters or astroblemes on the present face of the earth. On the moon, there are approximately 200,000 craters on the visible face alone -the largest crater being 132 miles in diameter and attaining a depth of 16,000 feet. Making allowances for the different physical conditions on the moon and assuming that these lunar features are of impact origin, the indifference is that, since primeval time, large numbers of celestial objects have also encountered the earth, but that both the topographic expression of the impact and the objects themselves have been destroyed by weathering and erosion. It may be reasonable to suggest that additions of cos-mic bodies have materially altered the chemistry of the earth's crust from place to place and that the impact of large meteorites and asteroids has created zones of weak-ness in the crust that could be the center of magmatic intrusion and mineralization.

An open-pit mining operation can be viewed as a process by which the open surface of a mine is continuously deformed. The planning of a mining program involves the design of the final shape of this open surface. The approach developed in this paper is based on the following assumptions: 1. the type of material its mine value and its extraction cost is given for each point; 2. restrictions on the geometry of the pit are specified (surface boundaries and maximum allowable wall slopes); 3. The objective is to maximize total profit-total mine value of material extracted minus total extraction cost. Two numeric methods are proposed: A simple dynamic programming algorithm for the two-dimensional pit (or a single vertical section of a mine), and. a more elaborate graph algorithm for the general three-dimensional pit. The purpose of this paper is to present the methods used in ground water control and the considerations that affected the development of these techniques. Production at Knob Lake is currently proceeding at depths which may be as much as 200 feet below the original standing water table. In order to produce a more saleable product and to improve operating and maintenance conditions, it is necessary to depress the water table below the mining level. Considerable success has been achieved by drilling deep wells in strategic locations and installing vertical tur-bine pumps at depths of up to 400 feet. This method is especially suitable for operation under severe winter conditions and has reduced the detrimental effects by a far greater extent than other methods of water control, Spring runoff is handled in open sumps, but all other water from four mines, with flows exceeding 16,000 g.p.m., is pumped all year 'round from about thirty-five wells. The Lake Cinch deposit occurs in the Tazin gneisses on the footwall side of the Black Bay fault. Ore is localized by two faults, the Main Ore fault and the Cracking-stone River fault, occurring in shoots along the former and on tension fractures between the two faults. Faulting leading to the localization of the deposit is analyzed in detail and tied into the regional pattern. Pitchblende, the chief radioactive mineral, is investigated by X-ray and found to be of very small particle size. The relation-ships of U, Fe and Mn in the ore are established quantitatively, and Fe is found to bear a catalytic relation to U. The deposit is classed as belonging to Lindgren's mesothermal class. Mineralization is attributed to carbonate solutions, and the uranium is believed to have been trans-ported in the hexavalent state as the uranyl tricarbonate ion; analogy is drawn to a recently developed hydro-metallurgical technique for the production of uranium dioxide. The preparation of high-purity zirconyl compounds was studied in order to develop an economical process for obtaining pure zirconium via the caustic fritting of zircon sand. The direct dissolution of caustic frits with concentrated hydrochloric or nitric acid at 80c. followed by the addition of a small amount of acidified gelatin, gave high-purity zirconyl chloride or nitrate. The addition of a small amount of gelatin caused a mutual flocculation between colloidal silica and gelatin. The precipitation of this silica floc markedly lowered the content of silica in the product. The silica content of the compounds (or solution) so produced, generally less than 100 ppm., was sufficiently low for tributyl phosphate extraction for nitrate solutions. It was found that the degree of purification de-pends not only on the procedures employed but also on the nature of the frit itself. Silica was more effectively eliminated from the fritted product produced at higher temperatures, and less silica was present in the com-pound prepared from the frit produced in a shorter heating time. "In order to obtain the equipment necessary to automate the equipment it was decided that the Department of Mines and Milltronics would jointly survey the circuit. This survey involved a metallurgical study by the Department of Mines and Milltronics took sound recordings during manual operation, checking in circuit bottle necks and determining the number of sensors that could be applied.The conveyer is driven by 2 PIV drives, each has a variable speed of 3/ 1. The cross conveyer that feeds directly into the rod mill feed chute will contain an automatic sampler and will eliminate the necessity of stopping the belt feeders to take samples. At present, hourly samples are taken from this point and the circuit is upset and cycling results.The Adequate scale is very close to the rod mill to totalize and thereby give a continuous indication and the second purpose is to take a signal from it and control the solution addition to the rod mill.A pneumatic positioner was obtained and put on the scale which produces a 3 tp 15 psi signal which is proportional to the actual tonnage going across the scale. This signal was fed to a bias loader which was mounted on the control panel. From there the operator can set the amount of solution that is wanted by the rod mill. No matter what the feed rate is, the signal coming from the bias loader will follow it automatically. This in turn goes to the pneumatic solution valve (1 ½” ) and the solution goes in with the feed to the rod mill. This is only part of the solution required for dilution since the rest of it is used as a force jet for the feed to the rod mill."

This paper, after a brief introduction to the mineralization and structure in the mine area, outlines the methods now being employed for grade control at Bethlehem Copper Corporation. Sampling, subgrade drilling, blasting and the actual outlining of the ore are among the topics covered. The paper concludes with a summary of the results obtained, showing a reduction in dilution and an improvement in the grade of the copper ore going to the mill. Introduction T HE Bethlehem property is located in southern British Columbia in the Highland Valley about 30 miles southeast of the town of Ashcroft. The property is located within the Guichon batholith. The rock comprising the batholith is a massive, coarse-textured diorite, which, at Bethlehem, has been intruded by a younger quartz diorite, porphyries and breccia, referred to as the "Younger Complex." Mineralization, consisting of chalcopyrite and bornite with minor pyrite and molybdenite, occurs as disseminations, fracture fillings and coarse blebs. This paper describes the problems encountered and the steps taken to solve them in milling an ore containing relatively large amounts of pyrrhotite. A complex and greatly lengthened flotation circuit was required to recover the pyrrhotite. A very low pH had to be maintained in the cyanide circuit in order to get good recovery of the gold and maintain reasonable cyanide recovery. No. 2 shaft extends from surface to the 2875-ft. level, and No. 3 shaft, an internal winze, extends from the 2875-to the 5275-ft. level. This paper outlines the principles of friction hoisting and the components involved, and gives a description of a specific mine hoist. Friction hoisting is compared with conventional drum hoisting, and the depth of shaft at which friction hoists become more economical than drum hoists, with respect to power consumption, is determined. Introduction T HE purpose of this paper is to outline the principles of friction hoisting, to describe the components and to show the advantages of multi-rope friction hoisting. Some calculations are made to show that the power requirements and the initial costs of friction hoists are less than those of conventional drum hoists, once a certain depth of shaft has been reached. The use of multi-rope friction hoists is gradually superseding the employment of the conventional drum hoist in many parts of the world. It results in heavier payloads from deeper levels, an increase in shaft safe-ty and a more compact installation for protection against adverse weather conditions. SOME 20 years ago, upon finishing second year at the University of Manitoba, I was faced with the choice of whether I wanted to be a geologist or a chemist. Accordingly, I sought out Professor Brownell, Head of the Department of Geology, to ask him what a geologist did. His reply contained the statement that following graduation one went out into the field in northern Canada for 5 to 15 years to reduce to practice what had been learned at university. To a young man, very socially conscious, even one year, let alone 5 to 10, in a small mining community sounded like being banished to a monastery in the Himalayas and thus I turned to chemistry. Moving to the present, last month I asked a geologist, and then a mining engineer, what does the fresh graduate in their field do these days? The reply was: usually serve an apprenticeship for an indeterminate period either underground or in the field learning the job.

A survey of recent literature indicates that sulphides occur in the volcanic rocks of the Archean, or in sedimentary rocks intercalated with the volcanic rocks. The thick sedimentary sections are generally poor in sulphides. Thus, the widespread pyrite and pyrrhotite mineralization in the Archean may be largely of volcanic origin. Introduction I N this paper, commercial base-metal deposits will not be considered, as they are dealt with in other papers of the Symposium. Instead, attention will be focused on those sulphides, often associated with graphitic argillites or tuffs, which have appeared in such embarrassing abundance in electromagnetic surveys of Archean areas. The data on which the paper is based are drawn from recent reports of the Ontario Department of Mines, the Quebec Department of Natural Resources and the Geological Survey of Canada. The information available from these sources is unfortunately limited, because sulphides commonly occur in sheared rocks, such as black argillites and tuffs, which rarely form conspicuous outcrops, and may not be exposed at all. Thus, in the absence of geophysical information, even detailed mapping may fail to reveal the presence of sulphide-rich rocks.

"The one point left off the table was pumping costs, i.e. the cost of pumping to the cyclones.At East Malartic 5 x 5 S R L pumps that had been used to pump the classifier overflow were used to pump the rod and ball mill discharges to the cyclones. Maintenance costs on the pumps rose from $105 in 6 months to $1000 per month. The pumps had to be operated at 1150 rpm and impellers lasted only 5 to 6 days. These pumps were replaced by 6 x 6 S R. L. pumps operating at 825 rpm, but at this speed the coarser sands settled and plugged the pipe lines and the speed was increased to 925 rpm. The maintenance cost is now $100 per m::rnth which is 0 003 cents per ton milled. The impellers now last 1 month and the casing linings 6 months.Density meters are often used on cyclone overflows and sometimes on the cyclone feed. Haliburton weighted tube density meters are used in some plants. They are cheaper than the radioactive density controller, $2500 as compared to $ 6000The angle of the discharge spray from the apex can be used to judge the quality of perform1nce of a cyclone.For ordinary metallurgical applications the inside slope of the cyclone is not too important but for fine separation steeper slopes are used.The cyclone is a versatile tool and will handle considerable variations in feed tonnage - probably up to 15%. Above this variation the number of cyclones used has to be increased or decreased or the tonnage fed to them has to be adjusted"

T HESE remarks on the occurrence of strata-bound massive sulphide deposits are submitted be-cause the writer recently visited the principal Cyprus deposits (in January, 1965) and has also a back-ground of many years spent largely in detailed observation and map-ping of the Horne and Amulet ore-bodies, now largely inaccessible. They are particularly related to the Symposium papers (September Bulletin) by Hutchinson and by Roscoe. Some comments are offered on the cupriferous pyrite deposits of Cyprus. As the writer is currently reviewing the published literature on the related deposits in Turkey, a brief account of some characteristic Anatolian sulphide occurrences is given. The discussion is closed with some thoughts on the relationship between these Mediterranean sulphide deposits and those of northwestern Quebec and the Superior province in general. The geology of Cyprus, as it relates to the sulphide deposits, is well summarized by Hutchinson (1965). After visiting Mavrovouni, Skouriotissa and Limni and after much thought on the possible ge-nesis of these ores, it seems quite logical to me that he is right. They are indeed closely related to late-stage submarine volcanism.

Carbonyl nickel powders of irregular particle shape and low a11parent density are used extensively in the production of porous nickel electrodes for nickel-cadmium storage batteries and hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells employing alkaline electrolytes. Such porous nickel matrices are at-tractive for these intended applications as they are relatively inexpensive, are corrosion resistant, have good electrical conductivity, can be welded to form electrical contacts, have a long life (as demonstrated in alkaline storage batteries), and are rugged and vibration and shock resistant. This paper describes a feasibility study concerning the production of porous multi-layer nickel electrodes by the pressing and sintering of stacked layers of green-powder rolled nickel sheet. Background H AUSNER (1) conveniently listed nine different powder compaction processes used for forming metal powders into useful shapes. These are shown in Table I. There are additional powder metallurgy processes; however, most of these are combinations of two or more processes listed in the Table. A study of the literature revealed that every powder compacting process, with the exception of isostatic pressing and explosive forming, has been evaluated or is being used for the manufacture of porous metal electrodes.

Masses of pyritic copper and zinc ores are entrapped along the contact zone between two volcanic groups in the Matagami area. The upper limits of the sulphide concentrations tend to form concordant contacts against lava or cherty tuffite units of the younger group; the lower extremities tend to either follow transverse structures or merge with zones of dispersed sulphides. The sulphides are deformed and intruded by folded dykes. Close relations between metallization boundaries and volcanic lithology and stratigraphy, and a preliminary investigation of the fabrics and crystallization temperatures of the sulphide masses, suggest that the copper and zinc (but; not necessarily all the iron sulphides) were emplaced at h1gh temperatures during volcanism in near-surface lithological-stratigraphic traps. Introduction T HE Matagami area is centered 120 miles north of the Val d'Or and Noranda camps in north-western Quebec. For the present purpose, it is considered to comprise a 155-square-mile area in Isle-Dieu, Galinee and Daniel townships which encompasses the main sulphide masses. General: National Asbestos Mines Limited has operated an asbestos mine and mill near Thetford Mines, Quebec, since 1958. As a result of additional exploration of the orebody in 1962-63, it became apparent that long-range mining plans would have to be revised to allow for a large increase in both ore and waste tonnages. It was decided that the task of checking out possible mine designs could best be analyzed by a computer to obtain data from which an optimum open-pit configuration could be plotted. Object: It was desired to arrive at an optimum open-pit configuration with an over-all pit slope of 45 degrees and a minimum operational width of 200 ft. at the bottom. Calculations were based on assay values from diamond drill holes in cross sections of the mine. The computer's assignment was to select and describe, by coordinates, the optimum cross section for the mine. Mine engineers then assembled the various optimum sections to produce the pit outline. As this would not necessarily result in a practical mining arrangement, the computer also provided alternate solutions,
