This paper is based on the accident prevention pro-gram carried out in the coal mines of Alberta. It defines the role of the Alberta Mines Branch and of The Work-men's Compensation Board, and relates how a safety pro-gram was initiated. The formation of the Alberta Class 1 Mining Safety Council is also described. The responsibilities of both management and the individual worker are then outlined, and the main features of a successful accident prevention program are delineated. T HE purpose of this paper is not to repeat generalities and platitudes about industrial safety, but rather to relate the experience of Alberta coal mines during the past number of years in their efforts to keep accidents to a minimum. It has been learned from experience that many basic principles are as sound today as they were 20 years ago. How-ever the complexities of modern mining methods and the modern man or miner have created problems that did not exist then.

The metallurgical treatment of Falconbridge ore re-quires an extremely fine grind of the pyrrhotite portion ? for maximum liberation and recovery of nickel. This paper describes the operation of a grate discharge pebble mill in closed circuit with cyclones regrinding 25 to 30 tons per hour of sulphides to approximately 90 per cent minus 325 mesh. The consumption of the screened ore grinding medium is of the order of 2.5 pounds per kw.-hour, or less than 1 per cent of the tonnage of re-ground sulphides. IN RECENT years, there has been a considerable interest in pebble grinding in the uranium industry, and a number of installations have appeared. However, the use of sulphide ore pebbles as a grinding medium has so far been relatively limited. The Mattagami mining district encompasses a favour-?able belt of folded Keewatin-type rocks, with intercalated sediments and intrusives of late Keewatin age. This environment has been subjected to periods of basic and acidic intrusion. The orebodies lie within the fold structure and are associated with faulting and shearing of considerable magnitude. The No. 1 orebody contains 60 to 70 per cent massive sulphides. The minerals, in their order of abundance, are generally: pyrite, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and chalcopyrite. It is evident that the broad geological structure of the district is amenable to ore deposition. There are two ? prominent linear expressions which comprise this broad structure. Both strike directions lie at the edge of, or are related to, a complex gabbro-anorthosite-peridotite zone. The fact that eleven of the ore zones discovered to date coincide with the broad structure indicates its over-all importance. It is estimated that the production from Mattagami Lake Mines will be in the range of 600 to 700 tons of zinc concentrate and 70 tons of copper concentrate per day.

In 1954, Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited began the program of deepening the Falconbridge mine workings for 2,000 feet below the bottom, or 4025, level in order to provide twelve new levels for production. Involved in this program were a production-sized internal shaft, .crushing, pumping and hoisting installations, the integration of the new shaft operations with those of existing shafts, and considerations of ventilation requirements and ground support at depth. This paper describes the major items of equipment, and the depth development of No. 9 shaft as a whole, and also emphasize the planning phases of the program. The factors involved and reasons for the equipment and layouts chosen are given. Introduction and History THIS paper describes the planning and development of that portion of the Falconbridge mine between the 4025 and 6050 mining levels. This mine, the oldest of several being operated by Falcon-bridge Nickel Mines Limited in the Sudbury district, has been a continuous producer for over thirty years.

A review is presented of the fundamental differences between the Superior and Churchill geologic provinces. Structure, lithology, grade of metamorphism and a single recent age determination suggest that the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake belts are remnant blocks of originally Superior rocks lying within the Churchill province. Major mineral belts occur along the main boundary between the Superior and Churchill provinces (the Thompson -Moak Lake nickel belt) and within the remnant Superior blocks inside the Churchill province (Fiin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake). During the Hudsonian orogeny, metamorphic gradients must have existed across the Churchill-Superior boundary and between the remnants of Superior rocks and the enclosing gneisses of the Churchill province. It is possible that not only the unusual nickel deposits of the Thompson belt but also the base metal deposits of the Flin Flon -Snow Lake and Lynn Lake districts are due to redistribution, or diffusion and migration of metals to areas of lower-grade metamorphism during the Hudsonian orogeny.

Aircraft utilization, weather and cost data are given for three separate projects north of the sixtieth parallel in the Northwest Territories and the Yukon Territory. These operations, carried out by helicopter-equipped geological and prospecting parties, have cost $24 to $30 per square mile, depending principally on the distance from the base. They provide adequate surface exploration of areas with 40 to 50 per cent rock outcrop. A good one-inch-to-one-mile geological map can be made. T HE exploration of the Canadian northland has been given increasing attention by the mining industry during recent years. In many cases, the initial problem is to make an adequate reconnaissance of a large area where existing geological information is meagre. The Geological Survey of Canada pioneered the use of helicopter-equipped geological parties for mapping at a scale of eight miles to the inch.

Whole-rock and muscovite potassium-argon dates from selected low-grade metamorphic rocks of Precambrian age in the Canadian Rocky Mountains near Jasper, Alberta, were obtained to ascertain the age of the source terrain and the age of the metamorphism. Ten argillites gave whole-rock dates ranging from 270 to 485 million years, dates which are apparently inter-mediate between the age of the source material and that of the metamorphism. "Up-dating" increases with the degree of orientation of muscovite in the cleavage plane, and with the ratio of the muscovite in the cleavage plane to that in the plane of the bedding. Detrital muscovite from four arenaceous rocks gave dates ranging from 1,050 to 1,780 million years. "Updating" increases with decreasing grain size, so that, within the range investigated, the cube of the median diameter (¢) of the muscovite is apparently proportional to the radiometric date.

The change from a seasonal to a continuous mining operation at Cassiar has been accompanied by increased emphasis on the preventive maintenance of mining equipment. This paper describes how equipment maintenance is organized, and details some maintenance practices that have proved advantageous to the Cassier operation. Introduction Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited is currenly carrying out an open-pit mining operation at the 6,300-foot elevation on McDame mountain in northern B. C. A 6-mile road connects the mine to the mill and plantsite at the 3,500-foot elevation. Ore concentrate is delivered to the mill via a 3llz-mile tramline. Naturally level ground does not exist in the mine area. The weather is typical of mountainous regions, exhibiting wide and rapid variations in temperature. It is generally wet and windy at the mine elevation, and a heavy snowfall is common. The rock types vary from a soft, sheared serpentine to massive serpentine, to medium-hard, friable sediments to hard, blocky volcanic flows.

The Carboniferous sedimentary rocks of southwestern Newfoundland merit investigation because of petroleum, salt and gypsum possibilities and indications of base metallization along the equivalent of the Horton-Windsor con-tact. In this paper, Lower Mississippian (Anguille) strata are divided into three formations: (1) the Cape John below, (2) the Snakes Bight and (3) the Seacliffs. A correlation between these formations and the Craignish, Strathlorne and Ainslie formations of the Horton group? in western Cape Breton Island is suggested. The criteria for the Anguille subdivision are essentially lithological, but preliminary study of included spore assemblages suggests more precise interformational correlations between Anguille and Horton sequences. The re-measured lower portion of the type section of the Codroy group is presented to define more clearly the stratigraphic position of numerous gypsum and limestone beds. The system of keeping geological plans and sections for the Geco Mine at Manitouwadge, Ontario, is described. Special methods employed to save draughting time with-out sacrificing accuracy, such as the extensive use of black line prints, are discussed. The uses made of the plans and sections by the mine planning engineers in their designs of stopes, and by the blast-hole engineer in ~is preparation of blast-hole layouts, are noted. An unusual scheme for portraying the distribution of .copper, zinc and silver values within the ore zone is de-scribed. The method of estimating the grade of ore to be "blasted in each ring of blast holes is outlined, as is the method of estimating the annual ore reserves. The design of an effective but simple transparent geo-logical and mine development model, used as a display for -visitors, is discussed. A large-scale model used for the study of problems in geological structure is also de-scribed.

"The oxygen meter has been in use at MacLeod Cockshutt Gold Mines for over a year, At MacLeod about 200 tons per day of reground concentrate containing roughly 10% pyrrhotite and 20% pyrite is cyanided in four 181 x 18' Dorr agitators. A survey by the Department of Mines showed that oxygen content of some of the agitators was rather low. Experience with our oxygen meter indicates that the oxygen content must at times have been too low for good gold dis solution.We have found that in winter, when pulp temperatures drop to about 50° F, oxygen saturation in the agitators is not difficult to maintain. In summer, however, when pulp temperatures rise to 70or 75°F, the oxygen content will drop very readily. It was found that a high oxygen content can be maintained readily if the pulp is sufficiently dilute. Thus at 50° F, a pulp of specific gravity 1. 75 i.e., about 55% solids, will saturate; but at 70 or 75° F, the specific gravity must be decreased to 1 .45, equivalent to about 40% solids, in order to maintain saturation. Very thick pulps, such as thickener underflows, are noticeably difficult to saturate in the laboratory, and lose their oxygen rapidly.Clear solutions, on the other hand, absorb oxygen readily and hold it. The primary thickener overflow, before agitation, is 100% saturated; after storage of 3 to 4 hours it is still 100% saturated at re clarifier tank. Barren solution after spraying in a launder is 100% saturated.We have not yet attempted to determine what percentage saturation is necessary for good extraction, but it is known that there is a point at which extraction decreases rapidly. So far, the measures required to maintain over 80 or 90% saturation have coincided with measures required to hold the reducing power to the point believed necessary."

Gyroscopic surveying instruments, which apply the physical law of a gyroscope, are being used for deter-mining the azimuth of lines with a high degree of ac-curacy. In the past ten years, gyro-theodolites have been introduced widely for underground orientation in the mining industry of Russia, Germany and South Africa. Gyroscorpic methods eliminate awkward procedures of conventional shaft plumbing, and provide more safety, excellent control and the highest precision at any point under-ground without interference with hoisting operations. The advantages of gyroscopic orientation in geodetic surveys become obvious in primary and secondary triangulation, in the determination of co-ordinates of single triangulation points, using the method of trigonometric re-section and intersection, and when traversing over long distances or in areas with obstructed view. Other fields of application are found in geophysical surveys and in the orientation of technical objects; e.g. radar stations, relay stations and ballistic missiles.

Iron deposits of every major type except laterite occur in Quebec, and form one of the major iron ore resources of the world. The five principal types of ore described are: (1) hematite-goethite masses derived from iron formation through the oxidation and enrichment of iron by natural processes; (2) taconites consisting of fine-grained iron formation; (3) metataconites composed of coarse-grained iron formation; (4) iron and titanium oxide minerals in massive or disseminateed deposits within gabbro and anorthositic rocks; and (5) replacement or contact? metasomatic magnetite deposits associated with complex silicate and skarn mineral assemblages. Most of the ore, although relatively low grade, is easy to concentrate. The physical properties of the ores that affect the choice and efficiency of beneficiation methods are described. The extent to which iron ore from this area can be utilized in the future will depend on the continued use and improvement of highly efficient methods of beneficiation.

In 1953, a deposit of sedimentary oolitic iron ore was discovered in the Clear Hills area of northwestern Alberta. Since that time, detailed drilling has outlined reserves in excess of 200 million tons of ore grading 30 to 35 per cent iron. Attempts to physically beneficiate the ore to meet blast furnace or direct reduction feed specifications have been, in general, unsuccessful. In 1960, Premier Steel Mills Limited and the Research Council of Alberta jointly sponsored a pilot-plant test at the R-N Corporation at Birmingham, Alabama. About 5,000 tons of ore were treated, and briquettes containing 90 per cent Fe were produced, with 83 per cent recovery. At the same time that the R-N tests were being made, the Research Council initiated a program to produce high-purity powders by chemical methods. Several purification techniques were investigated; hydrochloric acid dissolution of reduced ore was finally adopted. Briefly, the steps involved in this acid process are as follow

This paper briefly describes some of the phenomena encountered when materials are submitted to extremely high pressures, such as those produced by the detonation of an explosive charge placed in contact with the material. It was found that extensive changes take place in the? microstructure of iron and steel. Diffusion-controlled processes, such as the transformation of lamellar pearlite, the recrystallization and grain growth of ferrite, and the homogenization of the pearlite-ferrite structure, can take place within micro-or milliseconds. Mechanical twins can propagate without deviation from ferrite to pearlite, thus indicating a proeutectoid ferrite-pearlite-ferrite orientation relationship. The propagation and interaction of intense stress waves in materials was demonstrated with the use of Armco iron. Finally, a comparison is made of the damage produced in metals by the formation of craters made by explosive shock and by hypervelocity impact. The effectiveness of two types of powder used in long-wall slashing was compared. The evaluation of the results can serve as a good example of how the application of statistical methods to underground test data can help to minimize the number of tests to be carried out. The conclusions are stated concisely, including a definite assessment of the reliability of the tests. Introduction AN assignment at the Algom Nordic mine called for a performance comparison between 70 per cent Cilgel B and 75 per cent Dygel in longwall stope slashing, particularly taking into account, in both cases, the build-up of bootlegs as dependent on hole deviation. Stopes were usually 8 to 10 ft. high and inclined at about 17 degrees. Starting from a raise, they were widened by consecutive longwall slashes to 60 ft., and, al-lowing for drift pillars, were approximately 300 ft. in length along the incline.

"The original grinding circuit at East Malartic consisted of two 8 by 8 C.A.C. mills in closed circuit with two 72 inch Akins Classifiers and an 8 by 10 secondary mill in closed circuit with two 48 inch duplex classifiers. With this circuit, we experienced a drastic drop in tonnage from one month to another, due to variations in the hardness of the ore. The first step to overcome this difficulty was made by increasing the critical speeds of the mills from 78% to 82%. This resulted in an increase in the secondary mill throughput; but, when the change was made on the primary mills no increase was obtained.The drastic drops in tonnage were still experienced and through working with Allis Chalmers the 8 by 10 mill was converted to a rod mill and the two 8 by 8 n1ills to secondary mills. This change eliminated the two 72 inch Atkins classifiers and the scoops on all the mills, since the 48 inch Akins classifiers sands could then be fed by gravity to the secondary mills through feed pipes.The rod mill and secondary mill discharges were fed to a common pump box using 5 by 5 S.R.L.'s running at 1085 R.P.M. with a twenty-five foot head. When this was done the pumping costs jumped from $105. 00 for 6 months to $1050. 00 in one month, or from 0. 0004 to 2. 75 cents a ton milled. The development of contact angles on highly polished ?uraninite surfaces, using sodium oleate and dodecyl ammonium acetate as collectors, has been studied at different collector and hydrogen ion concentrations. It was found that sodium oleate in acidic media (up to a neutral: PH) and dodecyl ammonium acetate in neutral and alkaline media give good contact angles. It appears that the combined forms of these collectors, viz., oleic acid and free amine, are more important in effecting contact. W ITH the emergence of uranium as a strategic metal in the last fifteen years, considerable effort has been directed toward the commercial recovery of uranium from its ores. This has resulted in the development of a uranium technology. It is only in recent years, However, that fundamental data regarding the floatability and surface properties of uraninite and ?pitchblende have been elucidated by different methods. Orebodies occur in an infinite variety of grades, shapes and sizes, and take many millions of years to grow. When extraction starts there is only one possible end -the mine sooner or later will run out of ore and shut down. If the mineral industry is to supply the ever increasing demands of modern civilizations, more and more metals must be found and mined. This will require a never-ending search for ore, and the development of every economic body, large or small. To justify the mining of a small orebody, it first of all must pay its way. If the size of the burden imposed by the capital cost estimates is not carefully worked out, an otherwise promising situation could be killed. The very nature of mining, as a transient industry, re-leases a steady stream of good used equipment, and the trained personnel to install and operate it. All manner of plans and layouts, which can be utilized at a new property, are available. Working these and other economies into the estimates will sometimes make enough difference to give a prospect the green light.

"The low consumption of reagents can probably be attributed to a good clean type of ore. The cyanide level is kept at 0. 8 lb/ ton of solution and the lime at 1. 8 to 1.9 lb per ton of solution (pH 12. 2 to 12 .3). Experience in cutting down the lime level in half produced troubles in the presses, in the refinery and resulted in higher cyanide consumption. Finally the residue increased under these conditions, High lime always seems to prevent the trouble from occurring.A survey at one mine of the taxable work, performed in the mine shops for use in the mine, showed that under the new regulations, this had increased some 30 times what it was before the new rules came into effect on June 14, 1963.A water softener idea is incorporated at Lamaque with the crude addition of 100 lb of lime per shift to a spare agitator to precipitate the bicarbonates as carbonates from the water before it enters the mill. The lime titration of the softened water is about 0,2 to 0.3 lb per ton of solution (pH 11). This water is used mainly on the filters as washes."
