I N ADDITION to its practical importance in the beneficiation of iron ores and in direct-iron processes, the study of the reduction of iron oxides involves many aspects of challenging theoretical interest. The complexity of the reduction process combined with the fact that under different experimental conditions the controlling stage for the reaction may not necessarily be the same, has led experimenters in this field to a wide diversity of opinion regarding the reaction mecl1anism. As a rule, each investigation has been restricted to the study of one or two variables over a comparative]~• narrow range of experimental conditions, and consequently, it be-comes necessary to examine the significance of each published work in the light of the results of other experimenters in the field.

Metallographic techniques developed from studies of corrosion films and electroplated coatings on aluminum alloys, are discussed. These methods, the result of work at the Naval Research Establishment, give extremely flat fields at the interface despite the large difference in hardness, in cases where electrolytic polishing could not be used. Techniques to overcome the similarity in refractive index of immersion oil, aluminum ox1d~, and mounting plastic are also considered, as are methods for improving visual and photographic contrast in areas of interest. A device for marking specimens is also de-scribed. ELE•CTROLYTIC polishing is inapplicable in the study of surface films on aluminum, whether corrosion films or electrodeposits. Mechanical procedures must there-fore be followed. Sample flatness and edge retention are of paramount importance. Special measures are required in the study of oxide films, because of the close proximity of the refractive indices of aluminum oxide, mounting plastic, and immersion oil.

DELN ITE Mines Limited is located in Deloro township, on the west end of the south break of the Porcupine Camp. Mining operations are currently being carried out on the downward extension of a system of quartz veins in an andesite zone. This zone has been followed from surface to the present bottom level of 5,250 feet. The changing mineralogy of the vein system has involved an increase in tourmaline content from the surface downwards, so that the veins at the lower levels are composed of dark brown quartz-tourmaline. The drilling problem presented by these extremely hard veins was partially alleviated by the development and adoption of a one-inch drill bit. All blast-hole drilling is now done with the one-inch bit, without any difference in hole spacing.

It is of importance, in prospecting, to distinguish ores of magmatic origin from those derived by the meta-morphism and granitization of source rocks and from those accumulated in certain sedimentary facies. The magmatic ores, which are characterized by their occurrence along fault structures, may be associated with volcanic (including explosive) phenomena. Heat effects are local. The magmatic sequence is well de-fined: kimberlite, with diamond pipes; ijolite, with carbonatites; peridotite, with nickel deposits; norite, with nickel-copper deposits; and diabase-gabbro, with copper-zinc deposits. These deposits are characteristic of Precambrian shields, where a thick sialic crust may rest on basic to ultrabasic magma. The sequence is resumed in the Paleozoic terrains (in a broad sense), with monzonite porphyries and associated copper, copper-gold, and cop-per-lead-zinc deposits.

THE demand for high-quality aggregate is increasing in all phases of the construction industry and in all organizations associated with road building in Canada. The production of aggregate in Canada has increased almost continuously since the end of the war and has quadrupled since 1948. Increases during the past fifteen years can be accounted for by the expansion in all types of construction, particularly that of roads and highways. Total construction in 1959, based on preliminary estimates, has been valued at $7 billion, and an increase fore-cast for 1960 indicates optimism on the •construction horizon (1). Cement produced in Canada in 1959 amounted to 6.3 million tons. This is more than 2.5 times the 1948 production. Increased cement production indicates an increased use of concrete, and thus an increased need for aggregate. Natural sand and gravel deposits are gradually being depleted.

F OR many years, only one grade of structural steel has been used in volume in Canada. Its characteristics have not been altered appreciably and its long use speaks well for its performance. This standard grade of structural steel may be bought and specified as C.S.A. G40.4 steel or the American equivalent, A.S.T.M. A7. The principal limitations and requirements of this specification are shown in Table I. Within the last five years there has been a growing awareness among the steel producers and steel fabricators that economic forces are at work which make desirable the availability of new and better grades of structural steel. Competition from other materials has increased. The use of concrete bridges and pre-stressed concrete beams is a prime example. New sources of steel from outside the country have become a threat to the Canadian industry and its high cost-price structure. C URRENT practice in the zinc concentrate roasting plant of The Consolidated Mining arid Smelting Company of Canada Limited, at Trail, B.C., involves passing the furnace effluent gases through an electrostatic precipitator for the recovery of dust. After removal of the dust the gas is treated for recovery of sulphur dioxide by conversion into sulphuric acid ( 1). However. as roasting techniques improved, and furnace productivity in-creased, the rated capacity of the precipitator was exceeded and it was necessary to consider various means of improving the dust recovery. A study of methods indicated that a baghouse using silicone-treated glass fabric, might be suitable for this particular application. Glass fabric was chosen because the temperature of the roaster effluent gases would range from 450°F to 500°F and tempering air was undesirable to avoid dilution of the sulphur dioxide gas.

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

A simple, easily constructed apparatus suitable for the zone refining of iron and other reactive materials is described. After eight passes at one inch per hour, the iron produced showed a marked drop in hardness to 49 Brinell. In addition, an arbitrarily -defined recrystallization temperature was lowered by about 35°C and the rate of grain growth greatly increased. CERTAIN materials, of which iron is one, are so reactive that they cannot be zone refined in any known container without becoming contaminated. For such substances, the floating zone method ( 1) may be used. In this method, the specimen is supported vertically in an inert atmosphere and the molten zone supports itself by its own sur-face tension. The method was first applied to silicon (2) and has since been used for other reactive metals such as zirconium and titanium. Some of the historical background of the industry is reviewed, with reference to the different types of reduction cells in use for aluminum smelting. Factors to be considered in cell des1gn involve capital, power, and operating costs. The trend is apparently toward larger cells. The industry is studying new construction materials for cell linings, as well as alternate electrolyte compositions and other design changes which will improve productivity and energy efficiency. The aluminum smelting activity in other countries is briefly reviewed. TODA Y'S industrial production of aluminum is still based on the simultaneous discoveries made in 1886 by Charles Martin Hall in Ohio, and Paul Heroult in France. Up to that date, only about 50 tons of aluminum had been produced in the world, and the price at that time was about $5 per pound. Sucl1 figures must be contrasted with the present world aluminum smelting capacity of over five mil-lion tons per year, and a price of about 25 cents per pound.

A survey of the literature reveals wide differences in the procedures used in making iron ore pellets and in the properties of the pellets obtained. In this paper, the methods of production and the properties of pellets, as reported in the literature, are examined in an effort to determine what correlations exist between them. An attempt is also made to determine the levels of the properties of pellets which are considered acceptable and desirable in modern practice. M UCH has been written regarding the important changes which have been taking place recently in the iron ore industry. As the demand for ore has increased and the supply of direct-shipping ore has dwindled, tl1e problems associated with the utilization of lower grade ores ha\•e been intensely investigated and important advances in both beneficiation and agglomeration techniques have taken place. In particular, there has been a great deal of activity in connection with the pelletizing method of agglomeration. The design of belt conveyors is a well-known procedure and related formulae can be found in any handbook dealing with materials handling. Belting and conveying equipment manufacturer's catalogues and design manuals offer a wide range of detailed information which can be applied to most of our conveying problems. The aim of this paper, however, is to investigate the design of a specific type of belt conveyor, namely the long horizontal, or nearly horizontal, type. (The undulating type, with moderate lifts and drops, can also be included in this category.) Most of the long overland conveyors carrying ore from pit to processing plant, or those carrying over-burden to the disposal area, fit this description. A critical appraisal will show that reasonably accurate results can be obtained when tl1e familiar horse-power formulae are applied to this type of conveyor. The progress and new developments in the design of belt conveyors, which have resulted from the extensive research done in the past decade, will also be explored.

The Pembina Cardium pool is a low permeability, stratified, solution-gas drive reservoir. Water-flooding has proven to be an effective means of pressure maintenance for all areas of the pool in which an economic rate of water injection can be maintained. The majority of water injection wells in the pool are converted oil well~ with capacities greater than 100 millidarcy-feet. If the average injection rate per unit of capacity can be in-creased the lower capacity areas of the pool can be economically flooded. Theory, laboratory work, and two . early miscible-flooding projects with-in the pool suggested that average water injection rates for converted wells could be increased two to three-fold by the initial injection of natural gas liquids and natural gas. The present paper consists of a survey of the literature on the problems of abrasion and wear of metals and materials by suspended matter. This problem is a very general one in industry, and is especially notice-able in the operation of cyclones and other types of dust collectors. The problem of abrasive dust in corrosive gas environments, such as commonly encountered in metallurgical industries, is particularly severe. Very little work has been done in the study of this type of abrasive wear, especially at high temperatures. However, a general review is presented here of all the work published on related subjects, such as that involving sand erosion in turbines and water wheels and the effect of temperature on friction wear. Topics in this paper include: blasting wear by sand, quartz, limestone, silicon carbide and other refractory particles; methods of investigation; effects of velocity, temperature and *Canadian Armament Research and Development Establishment, Valcarter, P.Q. angle of attack; correlation between indentation hardness, scratch hard-ness and resistance to abrasion; the effect of protective coatings; resistance of various metals; etc.

In 1958, the Iron Ore Company of Canada decided to proceed with the Carol Project. The ore deposits in the area are part of the highly metamorphosed southern zone of the Labrador Trough. They lie along the shore of W a bush lake, in the western part of Newfoundland-Labrador, 190 miles north of Sept-Iles. The project is designed to mine, by open-pit methods, 17,200,000 long tons of crude ore, grading 37 per cent iron, per year. This ore will be beneficiated to produce 7,000,000 long tons of concentrate, grading 66 per cent iron, of which 5,500,000 long tons will be pelletized. Production is scheduled to commence this summer. Initially, ore will be taken from 45-foot benches in the Smallwood mine, using jet-piercing production drills and large-scale blasting with "slurry" explosives. Four 13-yard electric shovels will muck the broken ore into 100-ton trailer trucks. The trailers will be hauled to two 2,000-ton loading pockets, which feed the ore into 100-ton railcars. This paper deals with the large iron ore concentrating plant owned by the Iron Ore Company of Canada. The plant is part of the Carol Project, which is being developed in the Wabush area of western Labrador. The mining and milling operations were officially opened in July of this year. The handling of fine material has always been considered a serious operational problem. The crushing, grinding and sizing of 50,000 tons of iron ore per day, in a dry state, could present sizeable problems in maintenance and orderliness. The operation, as a whole, embraces many recent developments in the iron ore industry. Mining operations include the latest techniques of jet piercing and blasting. Primary crushing involves a single crusher, which handles the complete production. Grinding of the ore includes the latest concepts of dry autogenous grinding in air-swept mills. The actual concentration of the ore is per-formed, in the wet state, by the use of spiral concentrators, with provision for possible flotation or magnetic separation, if required. The upgraded concentrates are either stored or pelletized, prior to shipment by rail to Seven Islands.

Variation in content of some of the major and minor elements in the Lake Dufault granodiorite near Noranda, Quebec has been studied. The element variation and specific gravity data show a pattern consistent with the concept of a concentrically zoned intrusive on the western side of Lake Dufault with a potassium-rich core and a calcium-rich inner zone. The part of the intrusive on the eastern side of Lake Dufault is of more problematical origin, but the suggestion is made that it has resulted from assimilation of volcanic rock by the intrusive. THE purpose of this investigation was to test the application of x-ray fluorescence analysis to the study of variation in chemical com-position of the Lake Dufault granodiorite. This paper is concerned with an analysis of a number of failures of large-size, hypervelocity light gas gun chambers and barrels. A brief description of the light gas gun principle and of the various types of guns is first given. The failures and the investigations carried out are then described in detail, with the failures divided into two groups. The first group comprises those failures caused by certain conditions to which the guns may be submitted, and includes, for example, severe local heating of the bore surface causing hardening and cracking of the steel. These conditions were accidental and steps were taken to prevent them. The remaining failures were due to faults in the material or in the heat-treatment, manufacturing or assembling procedures. Specific problems, such as hydrogen embrittlement, and the use of high strength gun barrels above their ductile-brittle transition temperature by preheating prior to firing, are briefly considered. MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district.
