The nonmetallic minerals work of the Bureau of Mines started with the organization of the Mineral Technology Division in 1912. A special experiment station devoted to the mining, preparation, and processing of nonmetallic minerals was established in 1923 at New Brunswick, N. J., and concentration problems on nonmetallic minerals of all kinds also were studied at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. In July 1936 the Nonmetals Division was organized, and in May 1937 the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, N. J., was moved to and made a part of the new Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md. At present the Nonmetals Division operates at three points: The Eastern Experiment Station, College Park, Md., which is headquarters for the division chief; the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and the Northwest Experiment Station, Seattle, Wash., where coal washing and preparation studies are included with those on nonmetallic minerals. Sand, gravel, and aggregate work is carried on by the Mining Division, as sand and gravel preparation are intimately associated with mining methods. The Economics Branch of the Bureau of Mines also prepares occasional papers on nonmetallic technologic subjects in connection with the presentation of statistics on a particular industry and reviews of the mineral industry in foreign countries for use in the monthly publication, "Mineral Trade Notes."

This paper, which describes the practice of milling custom ore, in addition to that produced under company and lease operations in the Tom Reed mines, is one of a series 'being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. Jarpe, the present mill superintendent, for his assistance in preparing the paper. LOCATION The mill is in Oatman, adjacent to the Benjamin Harrison shaft of the Tom Reed Gold Mines Co., in the foothills on the western slope of the Black Mountains, western Mohave County. The railroad shipping point is Kingman, Ariz., 25 miles northeast of Oatman. Paved highway U. S. 66 passes by the mill. The altitude is approximately 2,700 feet.

This paper describes the operations of the St. Joe Mining & Milling Co. in Boulder County, Colo., as of June 1936. Later a brief visit was made to the mine in September 1936; information obtained at that time has also been recorded. The company operates a gold mine, the Grand Republic, in the Sugar Loaf mining district; a 100-ton flotation mill in Lefthand Canyon near Gold Hill; and a custom sampling punt, the Boulder Ore Sampling Works, at Boulder, Colo.

This paper, describing the mining operations at Mount Isa Mines, is one of a series covering mining methods and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Mount Isa property has been in operation since June 1931; during this period operations have changed from the production and treatment of carbonate ores to the mining, milling, and smelting of sulphide ores. This change involved revision of ore-extraction methods. Stoping methods have been designed to apply to parallel lodes ranging from 10 to over 100 feet in width and dipping at 50° to 60°. The hardness and strength of the ore and enclosing wall rocks, together with the strength and thickness of the country rock between lodes, have permitted the selection of a sublevel stoping method for mining the sulphide ores.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

"Reflector button signs similar to those used to attract the attention of motorists on the public highways at night are now being used to good advantage by a few mining companies in underground workings for danger, warning, direction, and safety signs and signals. Most safety signs and signals used in underground mining are of the electric light painted-board, or enameled or porcelain metal-plate,type, all of which have good features as well as some disadvantages; among the disadvantages are: The filament of electric incandescent lamps is prone to ""burn out"" occasionally anti usually the lamps are not replaced promptly; painted-board and enameled or porcelain metal-plate signs can be seen only a short distance and often are ""passed up"" unintentionally by employees, consequently these signs do not always serve the purposes intended and may be the cause of injury or death through failure to warn the men of danger.The advantage of using reflector button signs in mines or underground workings is that the cap lamps or headlights with which employees and locomotives generally are equipped, if directed at these buttons will reflect the light back to its source, and if they are arranged to spell words of warning or direction, or if suitable symbols are used, they are discernible and can be read at a distance of several hundred feet. The distance the light is reflected depends largely on the color of the buttons used. The reflector buttons also in many instances can be used to good advantage in conjunction with other methods previously mentioned.Several types of reflector buttons are available, among them the flat-lens type with mirrored metallic foil or plate back, the facet-cut-lens type with a mirrored metallic foil or plate back, and a type with a hemispherical smooth lens with a parabolic mirrored metal back. Lenses for the different types are available in several colors. Crystal, amber, red, and green are the colors of the buttons used to the greatest extent in underground signs up to the present time. These buttons may be had in different sizes, also.It has been observed that crystal-colored buttons reflect light the greatest distance (about 1,000 feet) and red-colored buttons the least (about 500 feet); reflection from green and amber colors ranges somewhere between the red and crystal colors in distance.Reflector buttons for underground use should be designed to reflect light a maximum distance; they should be made of materials that resist oxidation and corrosion, especially of the mirrored backs, and should be relatively free of protruding parts or projections that will collect dust.Reflector buttons approximately 3/14 inch in diameter seem best suited for underground use in general because fewer reflector units are required for a signal of given size."

A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

This paper describes the pumping operations at the Ajax, Cresson, and Vindicator dines in the Cripple Creek mining district of Colorado during the summer of 1936. At that time the three mines wore pumping 6,500 gallons of water per minute into the Roosevelt drainage tunnel. Cripple Creek is the most important gold district in the State; it has yielded gold valued at over $365,000,000. The mines engaged in pumping are among the largest producing properties in the district. Ajax mine information was courteously given by Clayton Kissel, mine superintendent, and his staff; R. Y. Roby contributed the drawings. In June 1929 the Bureau of Mines issued a 13-page Information Circular entitled "Mineral wool." This was one of the first publications to present to the public some technical aspects of the mineral-wool industry. Since that time several articles have appeared on the subject in the technical press as well as publications by State organizations. Inquiries for information on mineral wool have continued to be received by the Bureau of Mines in large numbers, and in 1935 it was decided, with the cooperation of the is industry, to make a field survey of the plants then producing and to collect therefrom technical data to be compiled in a paper for public distribution. As a first step, a brief questionnaire was mailed to the known producers asking if they would cooperate for publication. Favorable replies were received from of percent of the manufacturers, and the field work was started. As the study progressed and tie number of plants visited grew, it became more and more apparent that the industry had made rapid strides in technical operation and control of their product, as well as in increasing production during the mast decade.

In June 1929 the Bureau of Mines issued a 13-page information circular entitled "Mineral Wool," which was one of the first publications to present to the public Rome technical aspects of the mineral-wool industry. Since then several articles on the subject have appeared in the technical press as well as in publications of State organizations. Inquiries for information on mineral wool have continued to be received by the Bureau of Mines in large number, and in 1935 it was decided to make a field survey of the plants then producing and to collect therefrom technical data to be compiled in a paper for nubile distribution. With the cooperation of the industry, this survey was made, and Information Circular 6984, Mineral Wool, was published in January 1930. The issue was exhausted after a few months, and requests for copies continued to come to the Bureau. As opportunity arose, further field studies were made in American as well as Canadian plants. The present circular contains the essential information in Information Circular 6994 together with date from later field studies.

This paper, describing mining and milling methods and costs at the Gold Hill mine, is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines. Boise Basin, in which the geld Hill mine is located, is in the central part of Boise County, Idaho, about 30 miles by air line northeast of Boise. The mine, owned and operated by Talache Mines, Inc., is at the southern end of the town of Quartzburg. About 115 to 125 tons daily is mind by square-setting and is treated in an amalgamation plant.

The record of fatalities from mine explosions in the United States during the past 44 years has been the best in the history of the mining industry, despite the fact that the number of fatalities from this cause during the past fiscal year now is nearly double that of the previous year. During there 4 fiscal years, mine explosions have resulted in an average of 45.5 deaths per year, compared with an average of 153 deaths per year for the preceding 5 years; an average of 542 deaths per year for the 3 years 1907-1909, inclusive, and a yearly average of 265 deaths per year for the 20 years prior to 1929. Other types of mine accidents also have been reduced during this period, but not to the same degree or by as large a percentage as mine explosions. The fact that in this fiscal year ended June 30, 1937, electricity was responsible for 60 percent of the explosions and 85.5 percent of the fatalities resulting therefrom (see tables 3 and 4) is evidence that either mine operators are lax in providing proper electrical equipment or there is laxity in the upkeep and use of electricity in our mines and more particularly in our coal mines. Several large coal-producing States that in the Fast have had numerous disastrous explosions have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as long as 8 years. The bituminous mines of Pennsylvania, one of the largest coal-producing States, give a good example of what can be done to prevent explosions. 'his State, with its large number of operating mines, many with very definite hazards from gas or dust or both, has had only two major explosions (resulting in 16 fatalities) during the past 7 years; this is a decidedly good record compared with any similar period in the past and when it is considered that during this period about 750,000,000 tons of coal have been produced. Other good records are: Tennessee, without a single fatality from explosions during the past 9 years; Alabama, with 6 fatalities during the past 7 years; Illinois, with no explosions during the past 4 years; and

The material was gathered red on a trip through tale State in the summer of 1936. From the most remote periods of civilization, stone Las been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns) or single markers to great obelisks and pyramid or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1050 at a cost estimated at a: high as $50,000,000, and it is today an object of unusual attraction for travelers. Other magnificent memorials, both ancient and modern, are to be found in many lands. Memorials of varying design have characterized the passing centuries and have found an important place in the New World. In early days, monuments were chiefly imported into America, but gradually an extensive memorial stone-manufacturing industry developed on this side of the Atlantic. Sales value of domestic memorials, f.o.b. quarry or mill, attained a maximum of $17,488,755 in 1920, and retail sales, of course, reached a much higher figure. Modest markers and tombstones are to be found in almost every rural community in the United States, and there are many elaborate and costly monuments in and near urban centers.

While apparently the hysteria with regard to silicosis and other occupational diseases has largely subsided and this subject is being more carefully considered and soberly judged, it would be poor policy for any employer to maintain that the storm has ended and that he can relax and revert to conditions as they were 5, 10, or more years ago. The fact is that the plan of paying occupational-disease compensation is now in its infancy and can be expected to grow rapidly. At present, while all of the States of the Union, including the District of Columbia and excepting only Arkansas and Mississippi, have compensation acts, only the following make provision for occupational diseases to some extent or in one way or another: California, Delaware, Connecticut, District of Columbia? Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Silicosis is compensable in one way or another in California, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Wisconsin, and possibly in other States. During the past few months, occupational-disease legislation (largely silicosis) has been considered in some form in Arkansas, California, Delaware, Idaho, Maryland, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah and Washington. It will be surprising if comparatively comprehensive occupational-disease legislation is not on the statute books of nearly every State in the Union within the next 5 years. With this situation confronting him, the farsighted industrialist who has the interest of his organization at heart, if he has not already done so will immediately start to "put his house in order" by studying possible occupational disease hazards to his employees and promptly applying known remedial measures or attempting to devise such measures if none exist. Unquestionably, one of the most important of the surveys to be made relates to dust occurrence, as State laws on occupational disease are almost certain to contain provisions, on silicosis and, with almost equal certainty, the provisions of any State law are not likely to be particularly similar to those of other States.

This is one of a series of information circulars describing mining and milling methods being published by the Bureau of Mines. The Summitville Consolidated Mines, Inc., is the only company now active at Summitville. Since the holdings of the company include those of most of the former producers of the camp, the paper virtually becomes a description of the Summitville district. The field data were collected from August 23 to 28, 1937. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The writer gratefully acknowledges his indebtedness to H. F. Detrick, president, and Edward Thornton, general manager of the company for their cooperation in making this paper possible. The determination and publication of data o the chemical and physical properties of American coals have been primary functions of the Bureau of Mines since its creation in 1910. In recent years this program has been expanded to meet increasing needs for information on the suitability of coals for the production of coke, gas, and byproducts, and within the last year an experimental coal-hydrogenation plant has been completed. With this addition, the Bureau is able to cover every phase of coal utilization, including combustion, carbonization, liquefaction, and complete gasification. The need for this information is increasing not only to meet the requirements of consumers but also to give the data required to establish the classification and minimum selling price of coal by the National Bituminous Coal Commission.

The term "konimeter" is used generally to designate a type of dust-sampling instrument that collects the dust from a small volume of air by impingement on a glass plate prepared aced with an adhesive film. The konimeter was first developed by Sir R. N. Kotze about 20 years ago and was followed a few years later by the circular-type konimeter, by which a number of samples may be collected on a glass disk. The present discussion will be confined to the circular type, as it is used most. Various techniques have been developed for using the konimeter, and many materials, such as petrolatum, mineral oil, and glycerine jelly, have been used in preparing the adhesive film. In South Africa, Australia, and Canada, where the konimeter has been employed most widely, dust samples are treated by ignition and washing before being counted. In Canada the dust samples are collected on a disk of special heat-resistant glass prepared with a film of mineral oil; the disk is then heated to a dull cherry-red in a muffle-furnace to remove the film and organic matter, cooled, and washed with a few drops of 50-percent hydrochloric acid followed by distilled water and alcohol, and then heated again to remove residue left by evaporation of the alcohol. After this treatment, the dust samples are counted under a magnification of 150 diameters with dark field illumination.

Research in connection with occupational diseases, including silicosis or, more definitely, pneumoconiosis, has been prosecuted much more actively in North American countries during the past 5 or 10 years than in any other known period. This applies particularly to the United States, owing largely to the fact that in recent years compensation for ill health presumed to be caused by industrial work of certain kinds is being paid to a far greater extent in this country than previously. Most other countries have had occupational-disease laws for many years. Court rulings in the United States, which started 5 or 6 years ago, have given a few heavy verdicts in connection with ill health or death caused, or alleged to have been caused, by some phase of occupational work other than traumatic injury, and these have called attention to the fact that ill health and even incapacitation can be caused by some kinds of employment. With the onset of the world-wide financial depression, which resulted in permanent abandonment of many business or industrial enterprises (among them mines) in the United States, the workers frequently believed that they could expect nothing in the future from their former employers, hence they felt free to demand monetary benefits or damages because of ill health which they suffered, or thought they suffered, because of their previous employment. The result was a flood of lawsuits and. compensation claims for occupational disease, particularly where dust was involved.
