8. Refuge Chambers 8.1 Refuge Chambers - Technical Discussion 8.1.1 Introduction As a part of the overall escape system, refuge chambers can provide a last resort when existing escapeways are blocked. These chambers are intended to provide both protection from toxic gases and a life supporting environment for a period of time before external rescue or further escape efforts can be carried out Escapeways may be blocked physically (due to cave-ins, etc), by fire, or by the presence of a toxic or oxygen deficient atmosphere. In the first two cases, the trapped miners would most likely await external rescue efforts, and hence the design of the chamber will have to consider the time durations that such efforts may take, It is also possible, in the second case, for fire fighting and fire protective equipment to be stored in the chamber so that miners may attempt their own escape. In the third case, it should be recognized that a compact, beltmounted 1-hour self-contained breathing apparatus has been developed(9), and that other, less compact equipment is available for up to 4 hours of self-contained breathing supply. If such equipment were stored in the chambers, then miners could escape by travelling from chamber to chamber, taking temporary refuge in each before proceeding to the next. 8.1.2 Background The concept of "barricading" has long been recommended for those emergencies where miners are trapped inby a fire. Barricading, which is the construction of a makeshift shelter in a crosscut or deadend, protects the entrapped miners from toxic gases and enables them to conserve a supply of air. In this manner, they can survive two or three days--hopefully enough time for them to be reached by rescue teams. In the past, many lives have been saved with this technique.

A variety of dynamic failure cases with regional impact were described at a bump symposium held in 1958. These types of events, while rare, are of particular interest because their ability to impact a large area has disaster potential. These cases can be grouped into two broad classes of events by mechanism. These are (1) slip along steeply dipping faults and (2) fracturing of strong strata above, or below, the coal seam. Both failure modes produce dynamic or ?shock? loads on the perimeter (roof, rib, floor) of mine openings. Special consideration should be given to these failure modes in planning of deep coal mines since their occurrence is not within the professional experience of many contemporary workers, and their potential is not evaluated by many of the analysis tools commonly used to evaluate hazards in coal mine plans.

Landstrom et al. (1985) suggested the possibility of cortical activation during exposure to WBV, however, it is not known how cerebral physiology (oxygenation and blood volume) responds in healthy women during different vibration frequencies. This study examined the role of backrest support and handgrip work on cerebral oxygenation and blood volume responses, during exposure to seated WBV. Methods Fourteen women (age: 23.9 ± 3.5 years) were randomly exposed to three frequencies of WBV (3, 4.5 and 6 Hz at approximately 0.9gr.m.s in the vertical direction) on a customized vibrating base (Advanced Therapy Products, Inc., USA) in a seated posture on three separate days. On the first day, the subjects completed an aerobic fitness test until volitional exhaustion on an arm cranking ergometer (Cybex, MET 300, USA). Each WBV session lasted 30 min (6 min baseline without WBV, 8 min WBV ‘with’ or ‘without’ backrest support, and 4 min recovery from WBV, 8 min WBV with ‘opposite’ backrest condition, and 4 min recovery following WBV). During 8 min WBV exposure ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support, subjects performed maximal voluntary rhythmic handgrip contractions with their right hand for 1 min using a dynamometer. To obtain regional oxygenation and blood volume responses, a NIRS sensor (MicroRunman, NIM, Inc., PA, USA) was placed on the anterior right frontal lobe just below the hair and close to fronto-temporalis region (Maikala et al. 2005). Results Baseline oxygenation and blood volume values were recorded during recovery from each WBV session of ‘with’ and ‘without’ backrest support. The physiological change in oxygenation and blood volume during each frequency (3, 4.5, and 6 Hz) for both backrest (‘with’ and ‘without’ a backrest) and workload (WBV only and WBV combined with rhythmic handgrip contractions) was calculated as the difference between the maximum values identified for each WBV condition of backrest and workload and baseline values (Maikala et al. 2005). ALL of the 45 political divisions of Africa were accessible to non-Communist world industry and commerce throughout 1964, although in some of them revolt and political attitudes presented problems. The position of the continent as a whole for mineral and mineral fuel resources, production, and oversea exports continued to improve. At yearend, significant quantities of a greater number of mineral commodities vital to industry and agriculture were being produced than in any other continent. This statement excludes Communist areas on other continents but might well hold true even if such areas were included. Deriving from its exceptionally diversified production, Africa furnished overseas industrialized countries as a w ole a greater variety of key mineral commodities than any other area. In addition, the value of mineral imports from Africa into the United Kingdom and continental non-Communist Europe probably exceeded the value of such imports from any other area if gold is included and mineral fuels excluded.

In 1965 Africa maintained its position as a region of the world essential to advanced non-Communist nations for supply of vital metals and minerals. The position stemmed from the fact that Africa produced in large quantity a number of key minerals of which either or both resources and production capacity elsewhere did not approach the needs of the free world. The Republic of South Africa alone contributed more than three quarters of the gold mined in the entire non-Communist world besides an estimated 60 percent of metals of the platinum group and the entire new supply of amosite asbestos, and Africa as a whole was nearly the non-Communist world's only source of gem and industrial diamond. Africa also accounted for 83 percent of non-Communist world cobalt production. Besides these massive contributions, Africa in 1965 provided 50 percent or more of the new supply from non-Communist countries of the following mineral commodities: Lithium minerals, corundum, manganese ore: and chromite, and over 20 percent of new supply from non-Communist countries of columbium-tantalum concentrates, antimony, beryl, vanadium, phosphate rock, and copper. Africa also accounted for 18 percent of the non-Communist world's output of uranium, 14 percent of its tin, 11 percent of its lead, 9 percent of its zinc, and 8.9 percent of its crude oil output. With respect to chromite, at yearend Africa's reserves of the mineral were far larger than those of all other non-Communist regions combined. This probably also held true for manganese ore. In the case of crude oil, the fact that Africa's share of non-Communist world output was 1.6 percentage points greater than in 1964 was significant, particularly inasmuch as the output rate was continuing to increase at yearend.

THE OUTPUT ff the mineral industry in 1964 in both non-Communist and Communist Europe showed an upward trend for most countries in keeping with the higher index of overall industrial production. Comparable indexes of mineral industry production for non-Communist and Communist Europe (including the U.S.S.R. in Asia) are not available, primarily because the U.S.S.R. does not report details of its industrial production by industrial sectors. However, available data both in the form of index numbers on production published by the United Nations and based on data as reported to the United Nations by the various countries, and actual production data for selected major commodities published by the various European countries reflect generally expanded output by both the extractive sector and the processing sector of the mineral industry in most of the 26 nations of Europe.

Overall mineral industry productive activity in Europe increased in 1965, following general upward trends in gross national product and total industrial production4 recorded. The gross national product of non-Communist Europe in market prices in 1965 was estimated at $572 billion and that of Communist Europe at $409 billion. However, the extractive sectors of the mineral industries generally did not fare as well as the processing sectors. In fact, a number of countries recorded lower production levels in this sector in 1965 than in 1964 and most countries had a lower growth rate in extractive industry output than in overall industrial output. Among the non-Communist nations of Europe, a general decline in coal production and lower levels of iron ore output in France, West Germany, and Luxembourg contributed significantly to the smaller growth rates or declines in extractive indexes. Where higher indexes were registered, this generally resulted from the performance of the petroleum and natural gas industry; exceptions were Greece, Norway, and Sweden. The decline recorded for Czechoslovakia was attributable entirely to poorer performance by that nation's coal industry.

THE importance of the mineral industries of the Latin American area in 1964 may be evaluated in respect to a number of points of reference, a few of which are measurable and appropriate for examination. With regard to the region's contribution to total world production, it accounted for total 1964 world output of natural nitrates (from Chile), and about 97 percent of the optical and electrical grades of quartz crystal (from Brazil). The region supplied over 20 percent of world output of 7 other mineral commodities and accounted for 4 percent or more of world output of 19 other mineral products. Among major commodities, the area, occupying 15 percent of the earth's land surface, supplied within 3 percent of that proportion of the world's output of copper, lead, tin, zinc, barite, and crude petroleum. Incomplete compilation of production data, particularly that of nonmetallic minerals, precludes production estimates on some items for the area ass whole, and therefore the importance of Latin America as a world producer of some additional commodities may not be clearly assessed. For example, most of the countries of the area collect only incomplete data or no data at all on the production of clays and other ceramic materials, sand and gravel, dimension and crushed stone, lime, ornamental and precious stones, perlite, vermiculite, carbon black, coal tar products, and petrochemicals. In the case of many countries of the area, the value of production of one or more of these commodities greatly exceeded that of other mineral industry products that are carefully reported.

THE WORLDWIDE economic expansion that has characterized the first 3 years of the 1960's continued through 1964 and was reflected in North America by strength in the industrial economy of the United States, which again was dominant. Advances in production were recorded in virtually all industries, including the mineral industry; 1964 mineral production established a new high, 5.4 percent above the previous peak recorded in 1963. However, the percentage increase in value of North American mineral production was slightly below overall economic growth. For industry in general, consumer demand held firm throughout the year and overall commodity prices averaged 2 percent higher than in 1963. Wages and salary payments also were up. With the single exception of the dock strike in the United States, the year was free of serious labor troubles and unemployment in both Canada and the States was at a low level. Despite the Viet-Nam situation, relatively tranquil international relations contributed to the forward movement of North American business. Total gross national product (GNP) for Canada and United States, in current dollars, was estimated at US$672.2 billion; 6.8 percent above the previous year's figure. Combined national income in 1964 amounted to US$546.9 billion, which was nearly 7.0 percent more than in 1963. In 1964, gains were recorded in each of more than 50 metals, nonmetals, and fuels commodities that comprise the North American output. The greatest category increase was 13 percent in metals, which was in part attributable to the 14 percent rise to a new record in value of iron and steel in United States, a 29 percent higher value of Canadian iron ore and a 57 percent rise in Canadian zinc. Despite a moderate decline in prices of iron ore and iron and steel products, generally favorable markets and rising prices for metallic ores and metals were a stimulant to the metals industry. Nonmetallic materials, with a total value in excess of US$5.25 billion were 7.3 percent higher than in 1963. THE South Asian countries of India, Ceylon, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim have a large variety of mineral resources; however, in spite of mineral industry growth during 1964, development of resources remained far short of possible development, and, in terms of value of trade in minerals, the area remained a sizeable net importer. India's mineral industry is by far the most significant; its minerals production in 1964 accounted for more than 90 per cent of the total value of all minerals produced in the area. The total value of all minerals produced in South Asia in 1964 was only about 1 percent of the area's estimated gross national product of $55,125 million. Despite the rather small current contribution of minerals to the economy, development of mineral resources figures prominently in plans for the industrial development of the nations of this area.

The South Asian countries of India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Ceylon, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim arc to varying-degrees just beginning to achieve significant economic and industrial development. These countries are richly endowed with certain mineral resources, and development of these resources is being accelerated. In 1965, the mineral industry remained a relatively small sector of the region's economy, accounting for only about 1 percent of its estimated gross national product of $62,528 million. Nevertheless, the estimated $630 million total value of minerals produced in South Asia during 1965 represented an increase of nearly 15 percent t over that of 1964. India continued as the dominant mineral producer of the region, accounting for 85 percent of the total value of all minerals produced ill 1965. India increased its output of iron ore, manganese, mica, coal, and petroleum. Pakistan accounted for 13 percent of the value of the region's output and recorded increased output of iron ore, chromite, coal, natural gas, and most other minerals. The small mineral industry of Ceylon attained remarkable growth in the production of ilmenite, graphite, and gem stones. The mineral industry of Afghanistan remained relatively insignificant, although development of large known resources of natural gas was continued, Nepal, Bhutan, and Sikkim produced no commercially significant quantities of minerals in 1965.

SIGNIFICANT general developments took place in the Far East during 1964, with far-reaching repercussions on the mineral and industrial economies of individual countries and the region as a whole. Japan, during this, "the Year of the Open Door," ushered in the era of industrial maturity, greater independence in economic policy, and expanded technical assistance to less developed countries. Symbolic of its dynamic economic growth is the fact that Japan out-produced the Federal Republic of Germany in steel during 1964 to take over a third-ranking world position. Mainland China, recovering from the "Leap Forward" debacle, made significant gains in industrial output. Mainland Chinese trade with Japan was on the upswing, and discussions were held between the Chinese and the Soviets for possibly resuming Soviet aid in industrial and mineral development. Meanwhile, United States aid to Taiwan was being phased out because of progress achieved. Rapprochement between South Korea and Japan was imminent late in 1964, a factor which may well affect South Korean mineral development. The Indonesian-Malaysian confrontation created economic difficulties in both countries. The war in Viet-Nam seriously disrupted industrial activities, particularly in the south.

Expanded war in Viet-Nam overshadowed activities in the Far East in 1965, diverting capital and materials from potential regional development projects. Japan with-stood a period of business recession that was particularly felt by its coal mining and iron and steel industries. Toward yearend signs of improvement began to show. Despite the recession with attendant credit restrictions and forced cutbacks in areas of overproduction, Japan's overall industrial output rose nearly 5 percent during the year. Foreign trade, liberalized in 1964, was a strong point in the Japanese economy and took the place of lagging domestic demand. Japan maintained its third place in world production of iron and steel ahead of West Germany and in 1965 was the world's fore-most exporter of iron and steel in primary and semimanufactured forms. Economic setbacks in mainland China caused by its "Great Leap" failures and subsequent withdrawal of Soviet technical assistance were difficulties relegated to the past. However, a newly formed "Red Guard" political group, part of a so-called cultural revolution, was due to cause new disruptions in 1966. Nevertheless, significant gains were claimed in Chinese industry, and the country approached self-sufficiency in petroleum in 1965 by virtue of its Tach'ing oilfield. Restoration of friendly relations was achieved between South Korea and Japan accompanied by Japanese offers of industrial aid and increased trade. Indonesia's economy was deteriorating; the country withdrew from regional development organizations and continued its stubborn confrontation policy against Malaysia throughout 1965. Late in the year after a Communist uprising had been quelled, there was a period of political retrenchme t and it was hoped that economic improvements would follow. Petroleum remained a strong area in Indonesia's varied resources, and its production was increasing. Tin output declined, however, because of operating difficulties.

COUNTRIES of the Near East, with the world's largest and insist prolific petroleum resources, produced nearly 277 percent of the world's estimated total output of crude& oil in 1964 and accounted for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Although petroleum largely dominated the mineral industry of tine area, production of antimony, chromium, copper, mercury, boron, potash, and phosphate rock was of world significance. Production of crude oil in Near East countries reached a record high of 7,520,000 barrels per day in 1964, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1963. Kuwait maintained its position as the leading producer, accounting for almost 28 percent of the area's output. Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Iraq followed with 22.5, 22.2, and 16.5 percent of total area output, respectively. Despite record production, the Near East, proved crude oil reserve remained in excess of 211 billion barrels, or more than two-thirds of the estimated world proved crude oil reserve.

Near East region countries continued to supply a large share of the world's energy requirements in 1965. The area accounted for nearly 27 percent of estimated total world crude oil output and for about 60 percent of world exports of this commodity. Also, it was the source of more than 40 percent of the world's petroleum refinery products exports. Although other mineral industry activities remained relatively in? significant in comparison with petroleum, regional production and export of certain metallic and nonmetallic mineral commodities were of world significance. Of these commodities, chief in importance were chromium, copper, mercury, antimony, boron, potash, and phosphate Tack. The Near East region contains the largest and most productive oil resources in the world. Petroleum exploration and development operations during 1965 resulted in crude oil reserve additions of almost 8 billion barrels to increase proved reserves to 219 billion barrels at yearend, an amount equal to nearly 68.5 percent of the world's proved oil reserves. Near East countries' production of crude oil averaged a record 8.337,575 barrels per day in 1965, an increase of nearly 11 percent over that of 1964. On an annual basis, Kuwait continued as the leading oil producer in the Near East; however, Saudi Ayabia was a close second and its rate of production in late 1965 exceeded that of Kuwait. The major oil producing nations and their percentage of total area crude oil output was Kuwait, 26.0; Saudi Arabia 24.3; Iran, 22.3; and Iraq 15.9.

THE RICH and varied occurrences of metallic ores in Australia, extensive nickel deposits on New Caledonia and phosphate rock on several widely scattered small islands were important aspects of the economy of the South Pacific area. Relatively small quantities of gold and nonmetallic minerals produced in New Zealand, Fiji, and the Territory of Papua-New Guinea remained important to the domestic economies of these islands, but had little importance to overall world mineral supplies. The value of mineral commodities produced in this area in 1964 was estimated at $658 million,3 compared with $585 million in 1963. The year's greatest commodity gains were in bauxite and aluminum, beryl concentrate, manganese ore, nickel smelter products, tin, and coal. Annual increases were recorded in virtually all countries and possessions in the area except Papua-New Guinea, where the drop in output of alluvial gold accounted for a decline of about $160,000. Mineral industry activities in Australia overshadowed those in all other parts of the South Pacific in 1964. Outstanding developments were the sales contract negotiations and physical preparation for exploiting the rich iron ore discoveries in Western Australia, the initiation of domestic crude oil production, the commissioning of two new steal mills and an alumina refinery and a start on the new alumina-aluminum project based on Cape fork bauxite deposits. The principal mineral development in 1864 in New Zealand was the progress on plans of the Newzealand Steel Co. to use indigenous iron sans as the resource base for a local steel industry. In New Caledonia, additions and expansion of the nickel mining and smelting facilities continued throughout the year. Plans for extensive geophysical studies were announced by the Government Geological Departments of British Solomon Islands and Fiji.

While developments in Australia dominated the minerals industry of the South Pacific area, New Caledonia's nickel, manganese ore from New Hebrides, gold from Fiji and New Guinea, and phosphate rock from several small islands were significant in world supplies of those materials. The total value of mineral commodities produced in this area in 1965 has been estimated at about $763 million an increase of nearly 16 percent over the value reported in 1964. Increases were recorded in mineral production value with respect to that of 1964 for all of the countries except Papua-New Guinea where lower gold output resulted in a drop of about $300,000 and in the several phosphate-producing islands that collectively recorded a value decline of around $1.3 million. Exploration and development activities continued at an intensified level, not only in Australia and New Zealand but also in the British Solomons, Bougainville, and Fiji. Substantial additions to world supplies of iron ore and bauxite are assured and recent discoveries of natural gas, manganese ore, and nickel combine to give Australia a brilliant mineral outlook. Important discoveries of copper on Bougainville Island and on Vanua Levu, the north island of the Fiji group, and a gold mine on Misma Island were being developed during the year, with plans for early production underway. In New Zealand progress has been made on the New Zealand Steel Company project, and preliminary appraisal of a new titano-magnetite beach sand resource on the South Island has aroused considerable industrial interest. Extensive geophysical investigations were carried out in the British Solomon Islands and on Fiji's goldfields. The expansion program that will double output of products by New Caledonia's Société Le Nickel continued through 1965, and several foreign private companies have expressed a desire to initiate additional industries based on nickel prospects in New Caledonia.

"Bit wear presents problems to mining operations because it affects both productivity and economics. Most bit research deals with energy requirements and energy dissipation mechanics for ideal fragmentation during the cutting process.Mechanical cutting leads to dust generation. Past studies involving dust generation due to bit wear concluded that dust concentrations increased considerably after a 7% bit weight loss: leading researchers recommend that the bits be changed at that point.Bit wear is affected by three factors: machine operating parameters in-situ mining conditions and rock properties. Operating parameters such as the depth of cut tool material spray position and the drum's rotating velocity are very important and have a definite impact on bit wear.During the mining process the amount of rock in coal and the strength of that rock is important as abrasion and adhesion take affect. Diffusive wear or deformation becomes dominant only when the temperatures exceed critical. Temperatures rise as a function of drum velocity rock properties and the cutting tool itself.Miner bit surveyIn this study, 15 mines were surveyed, and of those six responded for nine seams. The survey reflected a wide range of information about coal production and bit consumption from continuous miner sections. Also used bits were collected to get first-hand information to analyze wear."
