Cores recovered from the producing formations may be analyzed for porosity, permeability, oil content, ""connate"" water content, and other physical and chemical properties of the formation, all to the end of furnishing enough data for making reliable estimates of the quantity and avail¬ability of oil and as within a reservoir and in devising efficient means for their withdrawal.Examination of bottom-hole samples of oil gives valuable information concerning the amount of gas in solution in the oil within the reservoir and the resultant shrinkage of the oil when the gas is released. Producing characteristics of reservoirs nay be determined by means of subsurface pressure and temperature gages and measurements male at the wellhead; however, unless reliable core analyses are available, these data have only limited use in any quantitative study of reserves. In such a study the quantity of oil, gas, and water contained in a unit volume of the reservoir formation is extremely important. Although reliable methods of analyzing cores have been developed and the data thus obtained are valuable, their applications become more limited or reservoirs at higher temperatures and pressures are discovered. This condition results almost entirely from the fact that in recovering a core from a formation of high pressure and temperature by present methods a large part of the fluid content of the core is lost or contaminated to an unknown extent. For a number of years most petroleum engineers have held that if this loss and contamination of the fluid content of a core were eliminated, the value of core analyses would be increased greatly."

"INTRODUCTION Coal is a compressed mass of heterogeneous, macerated, metamorphosed plant remains that have collected in the earth's crust. Probably no two beds of coal have identical properties, and different parts of the same bed may vary considerably when measured by some of the many empirical tests that have been developed to classify or differentiate the properties of coal. Because of this great variability in properties, the commercial processing of coal to produce coke and byproducts has developed largely as an art based on experience, rather than as a science. Much empirical chemical research, however, has been and is being conducted on coal carbonization, and this work is of practical value in obtaining larger yields of gas and byproducts and in the improvement of the physical properties of the coke.Both ultimate and proximate analyses have been used for correlating purposes. 3/ In the United States the proximate analysis is used for the classification of coal according to rank and grade. The proximate analysis can be employed usefully in the coal—carbonization industry because separation of the combustible matter of coal into volatile matter and fixed carbon is, in fact, a small carbonization test conducted on 1 gram of coal heated in a platinum crucible.Small—Scale Laboratory Coking Tests,Many empirical tests have been devised for determining the coking properties and measuring the yield and quality of gas and byproducts obtainable from various coals. These tests, made on samples ranging from 25 grams (about 1 ounce) to 5 kilograms (11 pounds), furnish information that is roughly proportional in practical value to the size of the sample carbonized. However, the cost of the carbonization test also increases with the amount of the sample, so that for preliminary surveys of a number of coals, samples of 25 to 1,000 grams usually are employed."

In previous reports5/ of ore-testing studies, teats made by established methods on typical ores selected as representative of certain mining districts have been described in considerable detail. In addition to established test procedures, such as screen analysis, Chemical analyses, microscopical examination of ores and products, sink-and-float separation, gravity concentration, floatation, and magnetic separation with or without roasting, it was sometimes necessary to apply other methods, such as leaching, in instances where physical separations were not feasible.

[Apparent progress in fuel economy at petroleum refineries, as measured by the average amount of .seat units required to refine a barrel of crude oil, received a set-back in 1935, when the average rose to 562,00 B. t. u., compared with 562,000 B.t.u. in 1937 (see fig. l). The primary factor in the rise in average heat requirement's per barrel of crude oil refined in 1938 wan the decline in total runs to Invariably the average requirement increases when crude ins to stills decline, and vice versa. In other words, annual gains in fuel efficiency at refineries arc masked by the degree to which the capacity is utilized. The oil fields of Arkansas, all situated in the southern part of the State, have played an important part in the development of petroleum production in the northern coastal plain region of the Mid-Continent area. From the first discovery of oil in southwest Ouachita County in 1920 to December 31, 1930, a total of 480,167,5604/ barrels of crude petroleum has been produced from' this region. Development of the Arkansas fields proceeded rapidly after 1920. The El Dorado field was discovered in Union County in 1921. Drilling in Ouachita County resulted in the discovery of the Smackover field in 1922 and subsequently in the development of the whole southern area. To November 31, 1939,459 / producing wells had been drilled in 25 fields, aggregating 53,7356 acres of proved territory in 6 counties. Peak annual production for the State was reached in 1925, when 80,823,7007/ barrels was produced, resulting largely from flush production from the Smakover field, which rose td an average of 444,9507 barrel daily during that year. "INTRODUCTION Although many investigators have provided information on the strength and other properties of concrete the published literature cites few data on the effect of mixing cement with acid mine waters or on acid resistance of concrete in contact with mine waters. Most of the reported work on the effect of impure waters has dealt with the resistance of cement specimens to ""sulfate waters,"" that is, waters or soils with a relatively high sodium sulfate content. The ""Merriman test"" is used commonly to determine the corrosion resistance of cements for 28 days, but it does not seem certain that a cement having a high sulfate resistance in the Merriman or similar tests necessarily will show correspondingly great resistance to the sulfates of iron and, particularly, to sulfuric acid, which usually are present in acid mine waters. Extensive use of cement mortar for laying up masonry stoppings in coal and other mines and for constructing concrete mine haulageways and shaft linings, coal-storage and other retaining walls, highway bridges, culverts, and many other types of construction where it is difficult to obtain fresh water for mixing or where the structures are later exposed to contact with acid waters makes it important to know the effect of these conditions on cement and whether there is a cement better suited for such work than ordinary portland cement.CONDUCT OF THE INVESTIGATIONFor a short time early in 1935 the opportunity to obtain at least some additional information on the effect of acid mine water on cements was presented by the Relief Works Division, which provided money for irregular and indefinite employment for several months. Purchase of apparatus or material was not permitted under this arrangement, and indefinite duration of the work, intermittent employment, and finally complete cessation of the work prevented planning for extensive investigation of this particular problem."

"The increase in tunneling operations that requires working under pressures greater than that of ordinary atmosphere has raised the question of the use and possible limitations of respiratory protective devices under such unusual conditions. As little, if any, information is available, there is need for a comprehensive study of this subject before specific recommendations can be made. In the absence of such data it seems desirable to make a few preliminary observations regarding the problems associated with wearing respiratory protective devices under increased air pressures.Two distinct problems must be considered--the mechanics of the apparatus used under such conditions and the physiological effects of increased pressures on wearers of respiratory apparatus. "INTRODUCTION In the course of its studies of the explosibility of various coal dusts in the Experimental coal mine, the Bureau of Mines has tested coals representing the entire range of volatile content found in the United States. In connection with their work the Bureau's field engineers some¬times meet operating officials who are not impressed by the fact that there is an explosion hazard in mines working low—volatile coals. Actually the difference in explosion hazard between high—volatile and low—volatile coals is one of degree and not of kind. The purpose of this paper is to set forth briefly the experimental evidence that has been accumulated on the explosibility of coal dusts containing 8 to 31 percent volatile matter on a dry, mineral—matter—free basis.There have been numerous dust explosions in mines in which coals were worked that have compositions within this range. Those explosions are listed in an appendix, together with a bibliography of Bureau of Mines papers describing explosion tests in the Experimental coal mine."

In recent years development of instruments and equipment for determining subsurface pressures and temperatures in. gas and oil wells has made it feasible to obtain information that eras not available in the past on many gas-production problems. The material presented in this report illustrates particularly the value of subsurface-temperature data in the study of subsurface leakage from gas wells. An abnormal decline in the shut-in pressure of the Lone Star Gasoline Co. A. Jones No. 1 gas well in the southern part of the Buffalo (Tex.) field was observed during an interval when a negligible volume of gas bras being withdrawn from the reservoir. Wellhead-pressure readings indicated that the shut-in pressure of the well declined from 2,295 pounds per square inch gage on February 3, 1937, to 1,445 on February 12, 1935. Tests conducted by engineers of the Lone Star Gas Co. suggested that the subnormal pressure gaged on February 12, 1938, probably was not caused by a head of liquid in the well.
