In presenting this list of permissible explosives and blasting devices, the Bureau of Mines desires to call attention to pages 17 and 23, outlining the conditions in use under which, and only under which, the explosive or blasting device is permissible. In view of publications recounting trade practice favoring the use of a blasting device without stemming, particular emphasis is placed upon condition 4 on page 17 and condition 2 on page 23. An explosive or y blasting device enumerated in the permissible Lists of thin Bureau is not permissible in use unless it is properly confined with clay or other incombustible stemming.

[Before 1914 Germany held a virtual monopoly on the world supply of potash for fertilizer purposes. During the World War, potash shipments to the United States ceased, and recourse was had to domestic supplies. High war-tine prisms stimulated interest in various sources, and domestic production increased rapidly. At the close of the war, resumption of shipments from Germany mad other sources reduced prices to below pre-war levels, and, as a result, most of the domestic procedures ceased operations. This experience demonstrated that a domestic source of potash was necessary but that it must be of such a nature that it could compete in price with foreign sources. [There is a general concept in the, coal trade that the moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. of coal from the same seam, and. surely from the same mine, is substantially a constant; that calculation of the -moisture- and ash-free B.t.u. value from the proximate analysis and B.t.u. determined in the laboratory will reveal whether a coal came from a given area or sears; and that, having this constant, the B.t.u. value of a coal sample can be calculated fairly closely upon a dry or as-received basis from the moisture and ash values of its proximate analysis.]

Brine produced from subsurface formations may be employed successfully instead of fresh water as a flooding, medium in the secondary recovery of oil. The feasibility of this substitution has been proved in the shallow "shoestring" area of eastern Kansas and northeastern Oklahoma, where the supply of fresh water often is limited. In this procedure all brine produced with the oil is returned to the formation and thus is prevented from contaminating streams and fresh-water supplies. This report includes a detailed description of a "flood project" in eastern Kansas studied by the Bureau of Mines. In an attempt to determine whether brine, when handled properly, can be used as effectively as fresh water in flooding oil from partly depleted formations, an analysis was made of all known conditions that influence flooding.

[The term "nonmetallic minerals,? as commonly used in the mining industry, refers to those minerals of industrial importance that are mined essentially for uses other than for the metals contained. The field comprises several hundred minerals of industrial importance, of which 70 have been adequately described in the textbook Industrial Minerals and Rocks.3/ A few of the more important nonmetallic products are sand and gravel, salt, phosphates, clays, refractories, linestone, and cement materials. Some of tic minerals, such as bauxite and pyrolusite, have both metallic and nonmetal is applications, but in this report only the nonmetallic mineral phases are considered. In the organic field of nonraetallics only coal is considered, as, the, others - petroleum, natural gas, natural bitumens, and hydrocarbons - are of no importance in water softening.]

Progress made by the quarrying and related industries of the United States during 1939 included increases in the number of men employed and the number of man-hours worked and reductions in the death and injury rates per million man-hours of exposure to risk. Forty-seven States reported quarries in operation; in each of 26 States the industry employed 1,000 or more men. Of these 26 States, 16 reported lower accident rates than in 1938. Among the operations of various types for which separate figures are published in this bulletin, the limestone, lime, and cement groups reported lower accident rates. During 1939, 79,449 men were employed in the quarrying industries. The period of operation of the plants averaged 236 clays per employee, with a total working time that equaled nearly 144 million man-hours. Accidents at the plants resulted in 48 deaths and 5,204 disabling injuries among the workers. Expressed as frequency rates, the accidents represented 0.33 fatality and 36.18 injuries for each million man-hours of work performed during the year. The major cause of fatal accidents inside the quarries was falls or slides of rock or overburden; nine deaths were reported from this cause. Four men were killed by explosives and four by falls of persons. Nonfatal injuries inside the quarries were clue chiefly to handling materials; about one-sixth of the total number at all operations in connection with quarries and related plants were in this class. Flying objects also caused numerous injuries, although only about one-half as many as did handling materials. Next in numerical importance were injuries from falls of persons. Then followed accidents caused by falls or slides of rock or overburden and accidents caused by machinery.

[The flotation of mica is mentioned frequently in the literature, but most of the references have dealt with the recovery of mica by the old anionic collectors. [A survey of the literature relating to ignition temperatures of acetylene-air and acetylene-oxygen mixtures reveals rather wide disagreement in the reported results. In some instances the ignition temperatures of acetylene-air mixtures were reported to be lower then those of acetylene-oxygen mixtures, which is contrary to experience with other combustibles. To clear up some of the reported discrepancies, the authors have investigated the ignition temperatures of acetylene both in air and oxygen, and their results are presented in this report.]

Controlling natural-water drives to effect efficient and economic production of petroleum, through wells, from reservoir sands and rocks is a problem of major importance in the oil-producing industry. Water-drive fields are characterized by large quantities of mobile water under high pressure immediately below the oil in the flanks or extraneous parts of reservoir formations. Hence, the water, which is in fluid connection with the oil and a source of a large proportion of the energy available for moving it, advances up-structure to replace it. This phenomenon of water moving crestward into the oil-bearing parts of the reservoir and replacing oil is termed edgewater encroachment. The mechanism by which oil is flushed out and continually replaced by water as the hydrocarbon content of the field is depleted must be understood if natural-water drives arc to be used successfully to, induce efficient recovery of oil from its reservoir rocks. Until recently, the function of water in the production of oil has been somewhat obscure and was not given the consideration it deserved in early petroleum production-research programs because of the greater importance associated with and the effort devoted to investigations concerning the relations of natural gas to production of oil. Thus, with virtually no fundamental information at hand, it is not surprising that at first edgewater was considered a necessary evil, and the manner in which it was dealt with depended largely on the experience of the operators. During the intervening years, however, .practical information on encroachment of edgewater in oil sands has been widely disseminated as a result of studies of oil-field depletion, and many theories pertaining to petroleum-reservoir energy and performance have been advanced; these theories necessarily included consideration of edgewater as an integral part of the reservoir fluids and a source of energy for propelling hydrocarbon fluids through the reservoir and to the surface of the ground.

[This is the eleventh in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the United States Department of the Interior. The first report contained data, on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-36.3/ The present report presents analytical data for 2,020 samples, reprecenting the products of approximately 120 companies, which, as in previous surveys, include both large and small suppliers. In addition, the Pacific coast is represented by data averaged the Pacific Coast Technical Group before being submitted and&apos; are published exactly as they were received. As in previous surveys, the data are divided into the three groups of samples of regular-price, premium-price, and third-grade gasoline each group has been averaged separately. Recommendations for safe practices in the operation of Diesel engines underground must take into consideration the hazards that might be created if the composition of the underground atmosphere differs from that of normal air. One aspect of this problem was discussed in the second report6/ of this series, which presented the results of tests in which a Diesel engine was operated with mixtures of normal air and exhaust gas supplied to the intake of the engine. The Nonmetals Division studies problems relating to the use of minerals, many of which are important to national defense, for purposes other than the: extraction of metals. In fact, virtually all of the work of the division has been diverted to investigations pertaining to better use of the Nation&apos;s natural nonmetallics is resources as weapons of defense. The experiment stations of the division are at Norris, Tenn.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Seattle, Wash.; and College Park, Md. Studies involving the application of electric power to the nonmetallic minerals are conducted at the Electrotechnical Laboratory at Norris, and investigations on mineral-dressing treatment are conducted mainly at the Southern Experiment Station at Tuscaloosa. The cleaning and preparation of coal are studied at both Tuscaloosa and the Northwest Experiment Station Lit Seattle (other projects relating to utilization of coal are conducted by the Coal Division of they Bureau of Mines).
