Nonmetallic technologic investigations of the U. S. Bureau of Mines are headquartered at experiment stations in three widely separated localities of the United States. During 1936, the Nonmetals Division of the Technologic Branch was formally set up by combining the direction off the work of these three experiment stations under one administration. The New Brunswick (N.J.) station which in the past has been known as the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station, is henceforth to be at College Park, Md., as part of the Eastern Experiment Station, and its principal activities will be related to the nonmetallic resources of the Eastern and New England States.

The first signal system used in the Homestake mine between the cagemen and hoisting engineers was a mechanical one. It consisted of small cables or jointed steel rods hung in the cage compartments and counterbalanced with weights or springs. These cables or rod strings were connected to the mechanically operated gongs at the engineers' positions by means of bell cranks and steel wires. At the various stations the bell lines were also fitted with bell cranks and connected levers, so that the cagemen could operate the bells from the stations when they were handling rock or other material and not riding on the cages. Such a system was inherited from the days before extensive electrical development. It served quite well for shallow shafts, but for depths of a thousand feet or more it was very slow and cumbersome. It required consider-able muscular effort to operate it quickly, because of the inertis of its great weight and also because of frictional resistance. The maintenance cost was quite high because of the many wearing parts.

One of the lithium minerals most widespread in the earth's surface is spodumene (Li2O-A1203-4Si02) a lithium aluminium silicate. For some time, deposits of this mineral were known to exist in the Black Rills of South Dakota, but it was only quite recently that Hess4/ pointed out the great magnitude of the low-grade e deposits it s in North Carolina. The theoretical lithia (Li20) content of spodumene is 8.04 percent. The only other minerals with such high lithia content are the phosphates, but these occur only in pockets and are not in extensive deposits5/. Actually, however, the lithia content in spodumene is never found to be this high, being nearly always below 7 percent for the pure mineral, and part of the lithia is apparently replaced by other alkalies.

Sulphuric acid of various concentrations has long been used as a reagent in the determination of olefins and aromatics in hydrocarbon oils4 such as gasoline, kerosene, and neutral oils from coal-tar distillates. Despite its long use, however, there is no general agreement as to optimum conditions and concentration of acid, and numerous methods and modifications have been recommended. In most cases, treatment of the neutral oil with 80 to 90 percent sulphuric acid, followed by distillation to the original endpoint to remove olefin polymers, is recommended for the estimation of unsaturated hydrocarbons. The distillate thus obtained is taken as olefin-free oil and used in later stages of the anlysis. Aromatic hydrocarbons generally are determined in the olefin-free oil by suphonation with more concentrated acid (96 to 100 percent and fuming sulphuric acid are recommended), the hydrocarbons not attacked and removed as water-soluble sulphonic acids being considered as saturated hydrocarbons. In some cases the saturates are examined further by differentiating between cyclic (naphthenes) and acyclic hydrocarbons (paraffins), Generally this is achieved by physical methods, although strong sulphuric acid is known to react preferentially with some types of saturated hydrocarbons. It was the purpose of the present work to make a general study of this type of analysis and to investigate the reactions of hydrocarbons under conditions often used in analyses that employ sulphuric acid reagents. Since previous work is not in good agreement, the optimum concentrations of acid for the different stages of the analysis were determined. Several sulphuric acid methods previously recommended and new modifications were compared, two synthetic solutions being used as the reference oil. The results obtained are presented below under separate headings.

The technological work of the division is performed by sections. Thus, an efficient organization is provided to prosecute the various problems under investigation, and a logical system is set up for presenting the material contained in this report.

The most important lithium resource in the United States is in the form of the feldspathoid mineral spodumene. This mineral has not been used to any important extent as a source of lithium salts or lithium metal, as other more easily decomposed minerals have b en available in sufficient quantity to supply the relatively small demand. The need for cheaper lithium salts for such promising new uses as air conditioning or dehumidification and of lithium feldspar for use in the glass and [ramic] trades has justified the recent work done by the Bureau of Mines on King available, through improved beneficiation and extractive processes, some of the lower grade but extensive spodumene deposits.

[In many coal-mining countries, during he pest decade, there have been made extended studies and accurate measurement of movement of roof strata, tests of the physical properties of specimens cut therefrom, and tests of the strength of end load on artificial supports. Naturally, such studies have been more extensive in European countries, where mining conditions are less favorable than in the United States. As a part of its work in the conservation of coal resource and prevention of accidents in mints, the Bureau of Mines began systematic measurement of the movement of roof strata to in coal mines in the fall of 1935. It was decided that, in the beginning, work on a rapidly retreating rib line in a mechanized mine would give the greatest amount of information in a reasonable time. To this end a cooperative agreement was made with the Pittsburgh Coal Co., Dr. L. E. Young, vice president in charge of operations, for conduct of work in that company's Montour 10 mine operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed, This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the date obtained, and such generalizations as appear to be justified.]

The number of major coal-mine explosions occurring annually in the United States is decreasing, due mainly to fuller recognition of explosion hazards in coal mines and knowledge of methods to prevent them, which can be attributed largely to the dissemination of information by the United States Bureau of Mines, State departments of mines, and other coal-mining agencies. Conditions vary considerably from one coal field to another; consequently, outstanding causes of and methods of combatting explosions vary, also. The Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines is making a critical study of coal-mine explosions in the various coal-mining States, and an analysis of the results is published as each study is finished. It is believed that, with completion of the series enough information will be at hand which, if applied, will prevent all coal-mine explosions. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS The data in this circular are based on records of the United States Bureau of Mines and the Industrial Commission of Ohio. The cooperation and assistance of T. P. A list of permissible mine equipment, tested and approved p or to July 1, 1934, was published in Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6813/. The present list4/ includes virtually all the electric air compressors, coal drills, mining machines, loading machines, conveyors, mine pumps, room hoists, mine telephones, rock-dusting machines, switches, electric cap lamps, flame safety lanes, electric hand and trip lamps, electric flood lamps, methane detectors, blasting units, storage-battery locomotives, tandem locomotives, mower trucks, and concrete mixers tested and approved by the Bureau to January 1, 1937. The system under which these devices were tested permits the manufacturer, after his equipment has passed certain tests prescribed by the United States Bureau of Mines, to mark his equipment with a seal showing that it has been approved by the Bureau. These tests are designed to insure that equipments have the minimum requirements for safety in use. The only object of the bureau in making such tests and publishing lists of permissible equipment is to help decrease the hazards of mining.

Three hundred and twenty-eight mines and quarries, representing 36 States, took part in the twelfth yearly accident-prevention contest conducted by the United States Bureau of Mines and known as the National Safety Competition. Four underground mines and one open-cut mine (which represents the quarry and open-cut mine group), each the leader in its group, were awarded the ?Sentinels of Safety? trophy. Relative standing in the contest" was determined by the number of days lost from accidents in proportion to the total number of man-hours worked. Since 1925, when the National Safety Competition was inaugurated, an increasing interest has been taken in it by mining and quarrying companies as a means of stimulating mine and quarry safety by competition among similar plants. Each participating plant can, on a basis of its standing and record in the contest, determine to what extent its safety program is succeeding or to what extent it needs strengthening. With this information, each company that has a low standing in the contest can intensify its safety-promotion efforts the following year to obtain a? lower rate and possibly win the trophy or achieve honorable mention in the competition. Except for 1929, the National Safety Competition of 1936 represented more man-hours of employment than any other year since the yearly contests began.

The importance of "good voltage," especially for direct-current systems in coal mines, is not always fully appreciated. From the practical aspect there are three viewpoints from which low voltage may be considered, namely: (a) its effect upon operation of electrical equipment, (b) its effect upon cost of maintenance and power, and (c) its effect upon safety in the mine. The design of electrical motor-driven equipment usually is based upon a given or assumed constant value for the voltage of the system; consequently, when there is an appreciable drop below this value, unsatisfactory operation is likely to follow. In the case of shaker conveyors, for example, one manufacturer has pointed out that these conveyors must be operated at a certain definite speed if maximum output is to be secured. As shunt motors are used in the conveyor drives, either a rise or fall in voltage will produce corresponding changes in speed and thus seriously affect the efficiency of the conveyor. The introduction of automatic control for mine equipment has been greatly retarded because the relays, contactors, and other special devices required have failed to function properly when attempt was made to operate them on systems subject to variable and low-voltage conditions.

The work of the copper metallurgy section during the year was devoted to laboratory studies of sulphur recovery from smelter smoke and combination smelting of copper and manganese. Both of these subjects were new this year. Combination Smelting of Copper and Manganese According to published work, the affinity of manganese for sulphur is greater than that of iron for sulphur, so that if a suitable mixture of com-pounds of iron, copper, and manganese be smelted to form a matte and slag, manganese should concentrate in the matte, together with copper.

This paper is one of a series on mining and milling method and costs being published by the United States Bureau of Mines. The Golden Messenger mine, operated by the United Gold Mines Corporation, is in the York-Confederate Gulch mining region in Luis and Clark County, Mont., 22 miles northeast of the city limits of Helena and about 1 mile north of the town of York. It is the first operation to exploit successfully the low-grade ores of the York-Confederate Gulch area. The unusual vein structure presents some mining problems that have been solved in ail interesting manner.

All state mining laws require that flame safety lamps be used in gassy mines; the laws of some States require that safety lamps be kept for emergencies at every coal mine, whether gassy or nongassy. The use of the flame safety lamp has been widespread because it is the only defice readily available for detecting both the presence of methane and deficiency of oxygen. This paper reports the results of an investigation by the Electrical Section, in cooperation with the Gas Section, of the Pittsburgh Experiment station relative to the behavior of permissible flame Safety lamps in mine atmospheres deficient in oxygen and the effects of methan5/ on the detection of oxygen deficiency.

This paper is one of a series being prepared by the United States Bureau of Mines describing clay mining, crushing, and grinding methods and costs at various operations throughout the United States. These papers are designed to disseminate technical information regarding methods used. The cost tabulations represent local operating expenditures only and not total production costs. It is recognized that in many instances publication of total production costs may cause embarrassment to the individual operator as well as to the industry as a whole. On the other hand, operating costs are essential to a technical discussion and study of the methods employed. The attention of the reader is called specifically to this differentiation in order that no misunderstanding of the scope of the cost tabulations shall ensue. The following report deals with the methods employed by the Malvern Clay Co., Malvern, Carroll County, Ohio. The author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of the following persons: H. C. The possibility of cheap electric power for a number of mining areas in this country has suggested to many the idea of electric smelting of nonferrous ores in small units at or near the mines. The electric smelting of nonferrous ores was tested fairly thoroughly 20 years ago by United States Bureau of Mines and by others, and the fact that it did not achieve continuing workable success in any instance is sufficient proof that it offered no advantages at that time.

This paper3/ is one of a limited series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines to supplement a more extensive series on mining and preparation methods in the various mining districts of the United States. It describes ventilation methods and practices at the anthracite collieries in the Northern field of the anthracite measures of Pennsylvania as obtained by personal inspections in twenty of the larger collieries during 1933 and 1934 and from supplementary information furnished then and later by operating officials. This field is one of the four major divisions - Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern - into which the anthracite deposits of Pennsylvania are naturally divided, and constitutes, in plan, a slightly bowed lens, about 60 miles long, and that extends from Forest City on the north through Scranton, Pittston, Wilkes-Barre, and Nanticoke to Shickshinny on the south with a. maximum width of 6 miles. It is the oldest and largest producing field of the four, and has produced continuously from 1S09. The total anthracite production for the State reached a peak of about 100,000,000 tons a year in 1917, but in recent years production has averaged about 50,000,000 tons, of which somewhat over half comes from this Northern field. The operations of three of the largest producing organizations in the State are almost wholly included in this field, as well as about half of the operations of two others of the six largest producers, It comprises the first 14 of the 25 numerically designated anthracite State inspection districts.

Under the procedure of the American Standards Association, with the American Society for Testing Materials as sponsor, the Sectional Committee on Classification of Coals has arrived at the classification of coals by rank as shown in Table 14/. The standard explains the term "agglomerating" used for classification under physical properties, as follows: Agglomerating Index. - Coals which in the volatile-matter determination produce either an agglomerate button that will support a 500-g weight without pulverizing, or a button showing swelling or cell structure, shall be considered agglomerating from the standpoint of classification.***. Pending the adoption of a method by the American Society for Testing Materials, the coke-button grading test5,/ afforded by the examination of the residue in the platinum crucible incident to the volatile matter determination, shall be used.

Information regarding the pores or voids in reservoir rocks is vitally important in the scientific extraction of petroleum from natural underground reservoirs, and petroleum technologists concerned, with subsurface, conditions have devised various methods that give reasonably accurate information as to the porosities of oil and gas-bearing sands.5/ In this, work, several investigators have made use of the experience of the ceramic and other industries. The method of determining the effective porosity of oil sands described in this report falls within the general classification of gas-expansion methods. It was devised and developed at the United States Bureau of Mines Petroleum Experiment Station, Bartlesville, Okla., as a part of the research dealing with fluid and energy relations in reservoirs and improved oil-recovery methods. The apparatus and procedure are well adapted to the requirements of the Bureau, and the following detailed description has been prepared so that others may make use of the information. A tabulation at the end of the report gives the results of several hundred porosity determinations for oil sands in fields of 11 States.
