The work of the Mining Division is divided among seven sections, each in charge of a supervising engineer, as follows: 1. Metal-mining methods section, the supervising engineer of which is also supervising engineer of the Southwest Experiment Station at Tucson, Ariz. 2. Metal-mining research section. 3. Nonmetal-mining section. 4. Coal-mining section. 5. Mine-ventilation section. 6. Mineral-industries survey section. 7. Electrical section. The names of the sections indicate broadly the fields covered by each, and in the following, pages the objectives and type of work of each section will be summarized briefly and their active problems listed. The work clone during the fiscal year 1937 will also be summarized.

For years many oil producers have believed that often low-pressure oil- and gas-bearing strata have been over coked in fields where the rotary system of drilling has been used. Collom3/ gave as a reason for this con¬dition that because the mud fluid was thick, the oil or gas stratum was plastered and sealed as the tools passed through it and no oil showed at the surface. Although this observation was made 15 years ago, it may often still be true notwithstanding modern developments in coring and electrical logging. Operators have believed, also, that mud fluid does not solidify behind the casing. Lewis and McMurray4/ stated: "All the evidence obtainable from practical experience points to the fact that the mud fluid properly mixed and employed does not solidify behind the casing, even in deer wells and after long periods."

Disposal of brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas is a continually increasing problem. The necessity for studying this problem has been realized more generally in recent years, and in August 1934 an agreement was made between the Kansas State Board of Health and the United States Bureau of Mines to conduct a cooperative technical study of methods of brine disposal. To date one paper in the technical press4/ and three reports5/6/ have been published in which are given results of studies carried on under this cooperative agreement. In the Mid-Continent fields, the methods used most generally for handling oil-field brines are: (1) Impounding in evaporation ponds; (2) controlled diversion into surface streams; and (3) injection into subsurface formations through wells assigned for this purpose. Various States recognize one or more of the methods as legally authorized procedure. In an earlier paper Dean and Hersberger5/ gave preliminary results a d discussed briefly the use in flotation of organic reagents of the type known in the textile industry as "wetting agents.? These reagents are those with a molecular structure comprising a long hydrocarbon chain attached to a. highly molar or hydrorhile group in such manner that ionization is nearly complete in dilute solution and the resultant ionic grouping has a very considerable hydrophile-lipophile unbalance in the structure. As a result of this characteristic structure these reagents are more or less powerful frothers and emulsifiers. Ten the degree of hydrophile-lipaphile unbalance is sufficiently great and specific chemical factors are absent these compounds behave in flotation as noncollecting frothers insensitive to reason¬able changes of pH.

The nonmetallic minerals work of the Bureau of Mines started with the organization of the Mineral Technology Division in 1912. A special experiment station devoted to the mining, preparation, and processing of nonmetallic minerals was established in 1923 at New Brunswick, N. J., and concentration problems on nonmetallic minerals of all kinds also were studied at the Mississippi Valley Experiment Station at Rolla, Mo. In July 1936 the Nonmetals Division was organized, and in May 1937 the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station at New Brunswick, N. J., was moved to and made a part of the new Eastern Experiment Station at College Park, Md. At present the Nonmetals Division operates at three points: The Eastern Experiment Station, College Park, Md., which is headquarters for the division chief; the Southern Experiment Station, Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and the Northwest Experiment Station, Seattle, Wash., where coal washing and preparation studies are included with those on nonmetallic minerals. Sand, gravel, and aggregate work is carried on by the Mining Division, as sand and gravel preparation are intimately associated with mining methods. The Economics Branch of the Bureau of Mines also prepares occasional papers on nonmetallic technologic subjects in connection with the presentation of statistics on a particular industry and reviews of the mineral industry in foreign countries for use in the monthly publication, "Mineral Trade Notes."

The collection and correlation of thermodynamic data concerning substances of metallurgical interest have constituted one of the major activities of the Pacific Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines, at Berkeley, Calif., for the past several years. Earlier bulletins (32, 33, 34, 36, 36, 37, 38) s in this series are entitled: (1) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. I. The Entropies of Inorganic Substances; (2) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. II. High-Temperature Specific-Heat Equations for Inorganic Substances; (3) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. III. The Free Energies of Vaporization and Vapor Pressures of In¬ organic Substances; (4) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. IV. Metal Carbonates--Correlations and Applications of Thermodynamic Properties; (5) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. V. Heats of Fusion of Inorganic Substances; (6) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VI. A Revision of the Entropies of Inorganic Substances-1935; and (7) Contributions to the Data on Theoretical Metallurgy. VII. The Thermodynamic Properties of Sulphur and its Inorganic Compounds. The present paper collects and discusses thermodynamic data relating to metal carbides and nitrides, with the view of obtaining usable heat and free energy of formation relationships. Pertinent data on both classes of substances are difficult to obtain experimentally and consequently are extremely rare; it is therefore necessary in many cases, if equations are to be derived, to introduce certain approximations and assumptions. Lack of adequate means of checking results by utilizing data of different types, such as was done frequently in the bulletins dealing with carbonates and sulphates, are readily apparent to anyone who has made even a cursory examination of the available information. Consequently, some of the relationships derived undoubtedly will be found to be inaccurate when more or better data become available. This is the fourth in a series of reports on properties of commercial motor fuels, made in accordance with a cooperative agreement between the Cooperative Fuel Research (C.F.R.) Committee and the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior. The first report gave data on motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1935-363/. The second report gave the same data? for motor gasolines sold during the summer of 19364/. The third report of the series gave the same data for motor gasolines sold during the winter of 1936-375/. This report covers 63 brands of gasoline represented by 1,136 samples excluding the Pacific Coast. Those from the Pacific Coast were averaged by the Pacific Coast technical group before being submitted and are published exactly as they were submitted. In some areas reports were received from five or six companies on the same brands of gasoline, whereas in other areas only one company reported on a brand. Thus, it can be seen that some of the data are more representative than others.

The general nature of the special constructional features that are required to provide safety from explosion hazards on machines approved as permissible by the Bureau of Mines is fairly well known to mining men who are at all interested in safety. These requirements are outlined in the schedules, under the provisions of which the investigations of such machines are conducted. Also, the method of conducting inspections and. tests of such machines has been described in Bureau of Mines Bulletin 305, Inspection and Testing of Mine Type Electrical Equipment for Permissibility, published in 1929. A more detailed knowledge of the special safety features of a particular machine is often useful and sometimes essential for inspectors, safety engineers, maintenance men, and engineers in selecting machines for a particular application. Three bulletins that give information of this nature have been published by the bureau, viz., Bulletin 313, Permissible Storage-Battery Locomotives and Power Trucks. In June 1933 the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce,, published a report of the gas reserves in the Oklahoma City oil field3/ based upon data as of October 1932, at which time there were 43 classified gas wells in the field, The estimates were obtained by the ?porosity-area" method. There are two general methods of estimating natural-gas reserves. The porosity-area method, as used by Hill and Rawlins, is used when a gas field is comparatively new but after enough drilling has been done to determine the average thickness, porosity, and areal extent of the producing horizon. The "pressure-volume? method of estimating gas reserves, the method used in this report, may be used after a sufficient volume of gas has bean withdrawn from the reservoir to cause an appreciable decline in reservoir pressure.

A shaft or slope bottom is that portion of a mine that is contiguous to the bottom of the main hoisting shaft or slope. It includes the terminal tracks for loaded-and empty-car storage, locomotive run-arounds, locomotive shops, charging stalls, supply rooms, pump rooms, waiting rooms, and offices for dispatcher, weighmen, and foremen. This paper will deal principally with the arrangement of tracks and the handling of cars on the bottom, but includes other data that may be affected, directly or indirectly, by the bottom lay-out. All of the mines discussed are being operated in comparatively level coal seams.

When a drilling well strikes a horizon in which there is a large volume of petroleum or natural gas under high pressure, danger of a blowout with disastrous results is imminent unless proper precautionary measures are taken. The history of oil-swell drilling has been marked by many blow-outs and wild wells, some of which-have caught fire and burned for long periods. Such incidents nearly always make headline news, but ordinarily few persons realize that what to them is an interesting newspaper item may entail great financial loss to the operator and frequently loss of life or personal injury to members of the drilling crew and others in the vicinity of the well. The blow-out, wild well, and crater are dreaded specters to every thoughtful person in the oil industry because of danger to life and property, underground damage to surrounding wells, dissipation of reservoir energy, and waste of irreplaceable natural resources that blow to the air or migrate to barren formations. Every operator drilling in high-pressure fields must be on the alert always to forestall any conditions that may lead to a blow-out, and his vigilance must not cease until a well is completed and oil, gas, or both are flowing to storage or market.

A larger measure of safety attended the operation of the stone quarries and related plants in the United States during the calendar year 1935 than in any other year for which annual records are available for the industry. The accident rate, covering fatalities and nonfatal injuries that disabled an employee beyond the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred, was 38.19 per million man-hours of work performed. The nearest approach to this favorable record was in 1932 when the rate was 38.48. The rate for 1934 was 41.82; hence the record for 1935 was 9 percent better than that for 1934. Reports from operating companies showed that 51 men were killed by accidents in 1935 and 4,152 men were injured. (See table 37.) The industry employed 73,005 men and performed 110,033,341 man-hours of labor, an average of 1,507 hours of work per man. Measured in man-days, the total volume of labor was 14,623,303, or an average of 200 days of 7.52 hours per day for each man employed. These figures are not strictly comparable with similar figures for the preceding year, as the, coverage of the industry was more complete for 1935 than for 1934 because special facilities were available to the Bureau of Mines for conducting the 1935 canvass that were not available for the 1934 canvass. Reports covering identical plants that were active both in 1934 and 1935 indicate a reduction of about 7 percent in the number of men employed in 1935. This fact suggests that the apparent increase in the number of workers in 1935 is attributable chiefly, if not entirely, to the more complete coverage of operating plants in 1935. The plants from which this inference is drawn employed 21,799 men in 1934 compared with 20,248 in 1935.

The increase in the price of gold in 1933 was the cause of starting many activities in gold prospecting and mining; it led to investigations of many of the so-called desert placers in the Southwest, which heretofore had not been deemed of commercial importance. Among these, attention was called to some of the gravel beds in the vicinity of the Randsburg-Atolia mining districts of Kern and San Bernardino Counties, Calif., in which gold and scheelite, (calcium tungstate, CaW04) were said to be present. Following a partial sampling and testing of the gravel, large-scale operations were begun in 1935. During the same year more detailed sampling and testing of the gravel beds were done by the author. During 147 days, 1,239 test holes 28 inches in diameter were drilled; their total depth amounted to 16,705 feet. These test holes furnished 2,495 samples of an average volume of 1.0583 cubic yards bank run each; all of the material was run through a sample mill constructed on the property. Original and rather unusual sampling and testing methods had to be used; milling and mining methods for large-scale operations also offered difficulties. The primary purpose of this drilling and sampling campaign was to determine, over a large area, the amounts of gold and scheelite recovered by placer methods such as were already in use on the property. This paper describes sampling and testing methods employed by the author during the 1935 drilling campaign. LOCATION The gold and scheelite placer deposit is in the Atolia tungsten mining district about one-half mile west of the small mining town of Atolia and about 5 miles south of Randsburg in the Randsburg gold-mining district. The deposit lies near the foot of the Rand Hills, in the Mojave desert. The territory is served by hard-surfaced roads from the north and south; Los Angeles is 150 miles to the southwest. A branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad passes within 5 miles of Randsburg.

Many people consider the mining of coal to be an extremely hazardous occupation; but it should be remembered that most large industries have to meet special conditions which, if not dealt with properly, might become hazards to life and property. Mining men may not always be fully aware that some practices and certain equipment that is incorrectly designed or maintained can lead to dangerous conditions. In endeavoring to help the coal-mining industry to prevent accidents and disasters, the Bureau of Mines has engaged in a program of education on conditions and practices that must be avoided. An effective way to teach safety is by visual demonstration. For example, it is generally known that certain kinds of electrical flashes have ignited explosive atmospheres in mines, but actually to see and hear explosions caused by electrical sparks of different size and character under laboratory control is likely to teach a much more emphatic and lasting lesson than would be learned by merely reading about them. The interest manifested by those who witness the demonstrations seems to prove that this is true. The purpose of the demonstrations is not to discourage the use of electricity in mines, but rather to indicate what types of equipment (including some generally regarded as harmless) can ignite gas and what safeguards have been developed to prevent such ignitions. It is hoped that this information will improve the ability of mining men to cope with underground hazards.

A study of the records on file in the Bureau of Mines reveals that moray fire in coal mines have been started by electrical equipment or circuits. There the fires were of undetermined origin, electricity often was Strongly suspected as the probable cause. While it is unfortunate that positive evidence as to the cause is so often lost in the general destruction resulting from fires, there are many lessons to be learned from fire s in which the origin was definitely established as electrical. For modern high-speed methods of producing coal, electrically operated machinery has become virtually indispensable underground. With increases in the amount of equipment it has not always been necessary to increase the number of circuits in the mine where direct current is mainly used, but it has been necessary to increase the carrying capacity of these circuits. For example, lends such as heavy-haulage units drawing 1,000 amperes or more have brought boat the introduction of 6/0 and "No. 9 section" trolley wires. This has not made the task of fire prevention any easier, for it has meant that circuit breakers s must be set so high that partial short circuits fail to open them, therefore an arc of considerable proportions can be maintained without causing the, beaker to open. Thus, if as fall of roof brought a trolley wire down against a loaded car of coal, an arc might be struck that would ignite they cowl without opening the circuit breaker.

For a number of years the Bureau of Mines has been studying the properties of crude petroleums produced in the United States and the Western Hemisphere. A number of reports have been published giving the analyses of crudes from the different field and regions as made by the Bureau of Mines Hempel method of analysis.4/ Several of these reports include analyses off crude oils from the Rocky Mountain region.5/ The search for new fields and new producing horizons in old fields in the Rocky Mountain region has been quite intensive during the last few years, and a number of discoveries have been made.

This is the fourth progress report in the series on the use of detachable rock-drill bits in the metal mines of the United States. It contains comparative statistics and costs or drilling at eight mines not reviewed in previous reports, comparison of the use of detachable bits at small mines and large mines, a discussion on the life of drill rods, and general conclusions derived from an analysis of the rock-drilling practice at all the mines investigated on this survey. This paper completes the descriptions of operating practice in rock drilling at individual mines. Data on drilling practices at 28 mines are given in appendices I and II and drilling costs are shown in appendix III. Research in the fundamentals of rock drilling, including the use of detachable bits, has been undertaken by the Bureau of Mines in its testing adit at Mount Weather, Va. Reports on the progress off this investigation will be issued when results warrant their publication.

The Greenburg-Smith impinger was developed at the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the United States Public Health Service in 1922 in the course of an investigation of dust-sampling instruments available at that time. Although it is not used extensively outside of the United States, it is now soused in this country to collect samples for the determination of any dustiness, and most of the information correlating degree of dustiness with physiological effect has been obtained by the impinger method. The chief disadvantages in the use of the regular impinger, especially in mines and other places accessible with difficulty, are its bulk weight, and power requirements. It requires a source either of electricity or of compressed air, which necessitates connections and extension of existing supply lines to each sampling point; the only alternative is the use of a relatively large pump hand-operated with considerable effort.
