In 2005, a total of 263 metal mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Metal mines were the smallest mining commodity sector, comprising 1.8% of all mining operations. ? Gold mines comprised 46.0% (n=121) of all metal mining operations. Other common types of metal mines were iron ore (n=32; 12.2%), copper ore (n=31; 11.8%), and lead and/or zinc ore (n=16; 6.1%). ? Nevada had the largest number of metal mines (n=52; 19.8%), followed by Alaska (n=27; 10.3%).

"Nickel is an essential metal in stainless steel, armor plate, and nickel steels and also in nonferrous alleys, such as monel metal and cupre-nickel, which are used in marine service. Nickel is one of the metals that must be greatly restricted in civilian use to provide the amounts needed for our War program. Consequently, it is desirable to investigate every possible substitute.The 5-cent coin no z in use contains 2.3 percent nickel. At the end of 1941, about 450 tons of nickel was being consumed annually to produce these coins. If the nickel used for that purpose in 9141 had been diverted to military use, 15,000 tons of armor plate could have been produced. As nickel is vitally needed for military as well as essential civilian products, it would seem desirable to substitute some other alloy for the 25 percent nickel alloy now being used. The Bureau of Mines has been asked to suggest possible substitutes.The substitute should have physical properties similar to the alloy now being used. It should have a metallic appearance and ring and a reasonably white color, so to be distinguishable from the present 1-cent coin. It should also be reasonably resistant to corrosion."

Fiji has been an independent country within the British Commonwealth of Nations since 1970. It consists of an archipelago of more than 300 islands ranging from tiny coral atolls, cays, and rugged coral limestone islets, to the larger mountainous islands of Kandavu, Taveuni, Vanua Levu, and Viti Levu of volcanic origin. The islands of Fiji straddle the 1800 meridian about 1,800 kilometers south of the Equator in the part of the southern Pacific Ocean known as Melanesia. The production of gold and silver from the Emperor Mine at Vatukoula on the island of Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji, remained Fiji's only metallic mineral producer. Mining began at the Vatukoula site in 1933, producing 124 million troy ounces of gold and 147 thousand troy ounces of silver by yearend 1985.

"IntroductionThe combined library facilities of the five universities in the Generic Technology Center for Respirable Dust, The Pennsylvania State University, West Virginia University, University of Minnesota, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Michigan Technological University, represent one of the most extensive and comprehensive collections of information on respirable dust research which is available in the United States. The Center encompasses two major medical schools, the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center at The Pennsylvania State University and .West Virginia University Hospital at West Virginia University, and includes national and international experts from such diverse disciplines as geology, geomechanics, mining engineering, mineral processing, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, material science, physics and several areas of medicine. In order to maximize achievements in research and facilitate early results application in the private industry, university, government and public sectors, a geographically dispersed Reference Center on Respirable Dust has been established at each of the affiliated universities. This network serves to encourage unity between the universities in the Center and coordination and communication with other entities who benefit from their research.Description of the Reference CenterIn this light, the goal of the Reference Center network is to identify at what location Information is available and to provide a means for others to access this information. It is especially necessary to have both ease of input and maximum retrieval capabilities available to all the research personnel in the Reference Center. At the same time, the service provided to the inquiring public must be complete and cost-effective. The Center's approach to realizing this goal incorporates advances in computerized and electronic searching of individual library holdings and the networking of major library and commercial search systems.The Reference Center uses the following means to achieve this goal. APPENDIX B - DEVELOPMENT OF FOAM-CONCRETE SLURRY MINE SEALANT 1. Introduction This appendix describes the results of an experimental development and laboratory evaluation of foam-concrete as a rapid setting, lightweight, self-supporting mine sealant material. Foam concrete, otherwise known as Aerated Concrete, is a form of lightweight concrete whose structure consists of air bubbles held together by a hardened cement mortar. Its principal applications are found in roofing, insulation, shock absorbing, and backfill. The air bubbles in foam concrete are formed either by chemical reaction in the wet, placed mortar, or by introducing a stable foam into the mortar during mixing. The mortar is usually a cement slurry with fine sand or fly ash as filler. Our attention focused on preformed foam concrete, since this is most adaptable to field applications. Equipment is available,* which simultaneously mixes and pumps a slurry of foam concrete. Such a slurry can be produced at a rate of up to 50 yards/hr and has been pumped in a 2-inch-diameter hose 1000-feet horizontally and 250 feet vertically up without significant bubble deterioration. Seven samples of Pennsylvania anthracite from the Bottom Ross bed were analyzed and tested to obtain data on cleaning characteristics, proximate and ultimate analyses, specific gravity, grindability, heating value, and ash softening temperature. Ash content of the samples varied irregularly from 9.0 to 34.4 percent, the range being narrowed to an upper limit of 14.8 percent ash by removing impurities dense enough to sink in a medium with a specific gravity of 1.90. Ash content of the sink material with specific gravity greater than 1.90 ranged from 56.4 to 80.4 percent; corresponding specific gravities were 2.095 to 2.534. Volatile matter contents were indicated to be higher for the ash-forming minerals than for the pure coal substance in the various specific gravity fractions of a given sample. Specific gravities of anthracites with compa¬rable ash contents but from different locations in the bed varied as much as 0.06. The grindability index increased significantly with increasing ash con¬tent of specific gravity fractions from all the samples.

The presence of salt in crude petroleum has been known for many years, but recently the percentage of chloride salts of calcium, magnesium, and sodium produced with some crude oils has increased to such an extent that the removal of the salty compounds is imperative for some refiners and their presence causes considerable apprehension for others. The exact reason for this increase of salts is not known definitely, but in all probability a combination of factors contributes to the condition. This report presents the results of a field and laboratory study by the Federal Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the California Division of Mines, of the swelling-type bentonite deposits in the Vallecitos area in San Benito County, Calif. The purpose of the study was to learn if these large deposits contain bentonite of sufficient quality and quantity to be of economic value as an oil-well drilling mud additive. Large amounts of bentonitic clays are used by the petroleum industry as well as the steel industry in California. Additional amounts may be required in the near future as a concrete or earth-fill admixture in constructing dams and canals in the California Central Valley. Depletion of some local clay deposits and loss of others to military installation areas have given new emphasis to the need for developing new bentonite deposits in California.

Coal degasification boreholes drilled from the surface have been success - fully hydraulically stimulated to increase the flow of gas from the coal. This Bureau of Mines report describes the hydraulic stimulation procedure for a coalbed, the equipment required, and design criteria for the treatment. Three examples of stimulation treatment show from fivefold to twentyfold increases in gas production. The tests were conducted in the Pocahontas No. 3coalbed, Buchanan County, Va., the Pittsburgh coalbed, Washington County, Pa., and the Mary Lee coalbed, Jefferson County, Ala. Two sites where the coal was hydraulically stimulated and exposed by subsequent mining show no adverse effect on mining operations through the treated zones. The induced vertical partings were confined to the coalbed and did not in any way affect either roof or floor rock.

A reconnaissance for sources of scandium and a metallurgical investigation of recovery methods for byproduct scandium from uranium mill solutions were conducted by the Bureau of Mines. The work on scandium was undertaken to obtain information on domestic resources and to explore and develop recovery procedures in consonance with the Bureau's long-range program for conservation and wise utilization of mineral resources. The element scandium is widely distributed in the earth's crust in trace amounts, but it seldom occurs as an important constituent in any mineral. An exception is thortveitite, (Sc,Y)2 Si207) a rare mineral that contains various amounts of scandium and yttrium and may contain up to 42 percent scandium oxide (SC203). Knowledge of the chemistry of scandium has expanded rapidly in recent years (1, 4, 9)4 but only fragmentary information is available about the metal because it is still largely a laboratory curiosity without established uses (2, 3). A recent study shows some of the physical proper-ties of the metal are (1) density of 3.05 grams per cubic centimeter) (2) melting point of 1,540° C, (3) hexagonal close-packed structure) (4) hardness of about 50 Brinell (500-kilogram load), and (5) an alloy behavior similar to yttrium and rare-earth metals (2). The price of $2,850 a pound for scandium oxide of 99.9 percent purity and $2,700 a pound for oxide of 99 percent purity reflects the scarcity and complex chemistry of the element.

Monitoring the miner respirable quartz dust exposure for compliance with U.S. federal regulations is mandatory to protect the health of coal miners. However, there is no technique available for the direct measurement of the respirable quartz dust concentration in the mining environment. The only means to estimate the respirable quartz dust concentration is to perform an analysis of the respirable dust sample collected, which contains both coal and quartz dust as well as other mineral constituents. For samples collected at coal mines, the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) utilizes the P7 method for respirable quartz analysis. The objectives of this work are to 1) evaluate the performance of the P7 method on field samples of low quartz mass loadings, 2) evaluate the magnitude of dust mass spatial variability within an enclosed cab environment, and 3) estimate the subsequent propagation of error in calculating the per. centage of quartz over a broad range of mass and quartz filter loadings at a surface coal mine. These objectives were achieved by obtaining surface coal mine dust samples over a 9-month time period in enclosed cabs of three drills and three bulldozers. By measuring weighing precision and using reasonable estimates for sampler variability, the dust mass spatial variability component was calculated by difference. The results show that 1) the P7 method can be precise and linear with quartz mass loadings as low as approximately 5 µmg of quartz, 2) the dust mass spatial variability, even within an enclosed cab environment, is the dominant factor of variability in propagation of error in estimating the quartz content of the obtained dust samples on a percentage basis, and 3) weighing precision is not a significant factor in error propagation. In addition to the enclosed cab samples, samples from eight surface coal mine drills were collected at various locations exterior to the drill cab. Significant data scatter at these outside locations strongly suggests that the ambient dust mass spatial variability has a significant effect on the propagation of error in estimating quartz content of the dust samples on a percentage basis.

The heat content above 25.0° C up to 1,000° C was measured for six rock types: St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite, Holston Limestone, Sioux Quartzite, Rockville Quartz Monzonite, Salem Limestone, and the basalt at Dresser, Wis. The calorimetric data were obtained with an isothermal jacket-copper block calorimeter. The experimental heat content data for each rock type are presented, along with specific heat data obtained from the temperature derivative of the heat content. For the six rock types the maximum deviations of the specific heats at a given temperature were within 10 percent below 575° C and within 34 percent above 5750°C. The increase in the values of specific heat range from a minimum of 13 percent for the basalt at Dresser, Wis. (temperature range, 100° to 1,000° C) to a maximum of 46 percent for Holston Limestone (temperature range, 100° to 870° C).

"INTRODUCTION With the conclusion of the war and the ensuing readjustment of industry to peacetime conditions, the Bureau of Mines recognized that definite and complete figures on the reserves of zinc and lead ores in the Tri-State District would be needed for an evaluation of the problem of reconversion. In October 1945 its engineers began examination of all the mines and pros¬pects in the Tri-State area and assembling of the basic data for a complete detailed estimate of the reserves of the field. Six to twelve months will be required to complete the report with the personnel available; therefore, it has been deemed advisable to provide as much data as possible for imme¬diate use. Accordingly, a confidential report prepared in January 1944 for the use of and in cooperation with the War Production Board has been brought up to date to form the basis of this preliminary estimate of reserves.The 1944 report has been revised by first subtracting from the reserves then set up for each mill group the amounts mined and milled by those properties for 1944 and 10 months of 1945, with November and December estimated. These production statistics were taken from the monthly reports of the Metal Economics Division of the Bureau of Mines. The remaining reserves were then adjusted by additions of tonnages of new reserves disclosed by developments during the years 1944 and 1945. Such additions were based upon the data furnished by various operators, upon estimates supplied by the Federal Geological Survey District Office at Miami, Okla., and upon estimates of the engineers of the Bureau of Mines Joplin field office.It is apparent from the work so far accomplished in the detailed exami¬nations now under way that the final estimate of reserves will probably be somewhat greater and will differ to a certain degree from these preliminary totals, not only as to the tonnages of ere but also as to grades and distribution by areas. This is due to the fact that all the factors of development, exploration, and geology are being considered in the present examination and report for each individual mine and prospect, whereas the previous reports covered only the immediate development factors surrounding each mill group then in active operation or projected for operation at some early date in accordance with the possible needs for war production."

The mentor/learner model is a time-honored approach to teaching, including within the mining industry. Miners know when they see excellence and have a deep respect for experts in their field. By using expert miners as mentors to other, less-experienced miners, training programs can be developed that will have a legitimacy and credibility that resonates with those being trained. Building upon concepts in current theories of adult education, this paper highlights the unique advantages of using mentoring as a teaching method that can make the educational experience both interesting and effective. Current NIOSH safety training materials use these concepts to deliver effective adult learning experiences for workers in the mining industry.

This report covers the calendar year 1953 and has been prepared and submitted in accordance with the provisions of Sec. 106(a) and Sec. 212(c) of the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act (66 Stat. 692; 30 U.S.C. Secs. 451-483). During this first full calendar year of operations under the Federal Coal Mine Safety Act, the coal-mining industry of the United States attained the best injury records in its history - improving the former best records (made in 1952) by 91 fatal and 10,020 nonfatal injuries. Whereas, the mandatory provisions of the act were intended and designed to prevent major mine disasters, apparently the effects have reached beyond the scope thereof in reducing mine accidents generally.

In its role to provide technology to prevent or limit adverse environmental impacts associated with mining or minerals processing, the Bureau of Mines has conducted research at its Tuscaloosa Research Center to asess the environmental impacts of phosphogypsum produced by the Florida phosphate industry. Over the years, stockpiles containing 335 million tons of phosphogypsun have accumulated and the industry continues to generate an additional 33 million tons a year. Samples from approximately 1,000 feet of drill core, obtained from nine stockpiles were characterized using chemical, X-ray diffraction, emission spectrographic, radiological, and physical means. The data developed indicated that phosphogypsum is not a corrosive or toxic hazardous waste as defined by Environmental Protection Agency criteria. Radium concentration averaged 21 picocuries per gram and its content was inversely related to particle sizes. Thirty-nine elements were detected in phosphogypsum; concentrations of these elements did not vary with depth within the stockpiles.

The Bureau of Mines has started an engineering study of oil recovery by miscible-phase displacement. As a preliminary part of the investigation a literature and patent study was made to prevent duplication of work already done, to become acquainted with those actively engaged in research of this type, and to learn where the recovery method has been attempted. This bibliography gives results of this study. The bibliography includes 254 references to U.S. and foreign patents and published literature relating to miscible-phase displacement processes of oil recovery. Present indications are that in about 2-3 years phosphor tags will be required in commercial explosives. A permissible 254 run ultraviolet lamp assembly has been developed to permit mine inspectors to detect such phosphor tags and therefore to establish if non-permissible explosives were used. This new lamp is powered by a Miner's cap battery without interference with the normal lighting requirements of the cap lamp battery. It is compact, light, and rugged with very high ultraviolet output.
