The Location Group conversed in the Petroleum Room of the Green Center with the purpose of addressing the following list of topics in light of the Bureau of Mines' requirements for detecting and locating trapped miners by electromagnetic methods. These topics include: Noise, Sources, Antennas (transmit and receive), the Propagation Medium, Signal Processing, Optimum Frequency, Receivers, Pulse vs. CW Techniques, Passive Location Techniques, and Obstacles. Practical constraints such as equipment size, weight and power requirements, cost and intrinsic safety were kept in mind during these discussions. It was emphasized that in-mine equipment must be inexpensive, rugged, simple and lightweight. Otherwise, the mine operators probably would not buy it nor would the miners be able to effectively use it. Present techniques for experimentally detecting and locating trapped miners were discussed, along with techniques to improve their location accuracy. Analytical, numerical, and scale modelling methods were considered as a means of giving further insight into measurement, anomalies caused by terrain variations, conductivity contrasts, and obstacles. After discussion of these topics, conclusions were drawn and existing problem areas were identified. These problem areas were addressed in developing guidelines for future efforts. Following the discussion period, the Chairman gave a summary of the Location Group report and comments were solicited from the entire group. 2.0 GROUP DISCUSSION HIGHLIGHTS 2.1 Noise W. Bensema asked the group whether the noise data provided by NBS was adequate. It was determined that for location systems analysis, the most important form of noise data was the frequency spectra of vertical and horizontal magnetic fields on the surface, and the answer to his question was affirmative. Drs. Wait and Frischknecht pointed out the difficulty in accurately measuring the true vertical magnetic field since these measurements are heavily influenced by the loop setting and the local geology. The Bureau of Mines is investigating the catalytic activity of rare-earth compounds to develop a catalyst for the cathode reaction of a hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell. This report presents the results of studies of the catalytic activities of lanthanide oxides for the oxidation of hydrogen at 150° to 250° C. Preliminary activity tests were made with approximately stoichiometric mixtures of hydrogen and oxygen diluted with helium. A series of tests was also run under oxygen-rich conditions in which specific rate constants and activation energies were determined. Variations in rate constants up to 2,000 times were observed for the various lanthanide oxides. The three most active catalysts were oxides of Ce, Pr, and Eu, having specific activities of 6.93 X 10-7, 4.88 X 10-7, and 4.06 X 10-7 moles H2.sec-1.m-2, respectively, at 200° C.

A study of copper cementation on iron was initiated to determine the effect that deposited copper has upon subsequent cementation. A microscopic investigation of cementation on an iron surface showed that cupric ion precipitates predominately on a growing copper deposit attached to the iron surface. A kinetic study of the cementation process in a revolving drum showed that the cementation rate is enhanced by the copper deposit attached to the iron surface and by the discrete copper particles of a cement copper slurry. The kinetic study also indicated that the character of the deposit is affected by the major anion in the solution. The cementation process is visualized to occur as a series of electrochemical cells in which cupric ion precipitates on copper dendrites attached to the iron surface.

I do not regard the criticism by Rankin of my work as valid or even meaningful. I strongly reject the assertion by Rankin that my results are invalid. As stated in my paper, the equation to solve (in e. m.u. ) is: [ ] where n2 =4 ps? . This may be rewritten as three scalar equations in Cartesian coordinates, one of which is [ ] The equation to be solved is the diffusion equation, and it is not appropriate to consider waves in this context. In the method a point-wise solution to the problem is approximated. As discussed in my paper the approach taken at discontinuities in conductivity is to choose the normal component of [E] at the discontinuity as the average of the normal components on either side of the discontinuity. This is similar to the well-known assumption made in obtaining Fourier series representations for piecewise continuous functions (Pipes, 1958; p. 51). In the geophysical problem this means that the discontinuity is approximated by a transition zone, which is a very good approximation for such cases. By using this approach, both the values of the function and its derivatives give a good estimate for those associated with the physical situation. It is not apparent and Rankin has not shown that "all the field components and the derivatives are grossly distorted in the region about the boundary" for geophysically realistic situations. He has given no evidence to support his assertation that the results are "invalid". Although Rankin declares that one cannot calculate the electric components from the magnetic, in his discussion he has not stated why this is so. After once calculating the magnetic components the electric components may be calculated, but one must insure that the initial solution is accurate enough to prevent significant round-off errors.

This Bureau of Mines report presents a brief summary of the explosion trends in United States coal mines for the past 160 years. These trends show that in spite of the overall improvements in mine safety, the number of fatalities from ignitions of methane has actually increased in recent years. Suggestions are made of procedures that can be utilized to reverse this trend.

Cement copper was flash roasted in a vertical tube furnace to convert the copper to acid-soluble oxides as part of a postulated process for refining cement copper by oxidation roasting, acid leaching, and electrowinning. The results of the study showed that the oxidation was a linear function of oxygen concentration between 0 and 20 percent, but above 20 percent oxygen there was no further increase in oxidation. Therefore, air was the optimum oxidizing atmosphere in this flash roasting system. The oxidation followed a parabolic rate law as the roasting temperature was increased from 400° to 800° C. Extrapolation of the data, based on the parabolic law, indicated that at 400°, 500°,600°,700°, and 800° C, the roasting times required for complete conversion to soluble oxides were 75, 37, 21, 7.7, and 4.6 seconds, respectively. Cyclic-roasting test results did not substantiate the predictions obtained through data extrapolation.

This Bureau of Mines report describes the preparation characteristics of 10 coal samples collected from the significant coal-producing mines of Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, and Wapello Counties in Iowa, with special emphasis on physical desulfurization. All 10 samples were of high sulfur content as received, ranging from 4.2 to 10.4 percent; the organic sulfur content ranged from 0.8 to 3.8 percent. The pyritic sulfur content of the samples could be appreciably reduced by crushing and washing and provided pyritic sulfur reductions ranging from 36 to 75 percent. Crushing to 3/8-inch top size and removing the sink 1.60 specific gravity material would provide float coal products containing 3.5 to 6.0 percent sulfur. However, these coals could be burned at utility plants utilizing SO2 removal processes with efficiencies ranging from 70 to 88 percent and still be in compliance with the current Federal SO2 emission regulations for stationary sources.

The extraction and recovery of nitrate from waste solutions generated in the production of titanium were investigated using solvent extraction techniques. Laboratory studies and continuous tests in a small solvent-extraction system showed that up to 98 percent of the nitrate can be selectively extracted by a solution of tributyl phosphate in kerosine. The extracted nitrate can be recovered as nitric acid, at concentrations suitable for reuse, by stripping the loaded organic with water.

This publication contains routine analyses and related source data for 299 natural gas samples from 22 States and three foreign countries. All of the samples were collected during calendar year 1972 as part of a continuous survey of the free world for occurrences of helium in natural gas. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4863 and 576.4 Fourteen previous publications have presented the results of 9,902 gas analyses prior to 1972. Solid-liquid flow in different pipe geometries was investigated. This investigation was conducted by measuring delivered solids concentration and head loss. The delivered solids concentration was measured to study the effect of pipe geometry on the minimum carrying velocity above which solids do not lag behind the fluid. Head loss was measured to study the effect of pipe geometry on the friction loss. A mathematical formula was developed for determination of the minimum carrying velocity. Darcy-Weisbach's equation and Durand's equation were used for comparison of head losses of pipe shapes. Of the different pipe shapes studied, each having the same interior cross-sectional area, the rectangular pipe with the wide side oriented as the base yielded the lowest minimum carrying velocity at high solids concentrations. The minimum head loss at low velocity and high solids concentration also was attained with this pipe. Although the circular section is known to be the best for transporting liquid only, the present study suggested that pipe geometry is a factor in lowering the operating velocity and reducing head loss in solid-liquid flow.

To assess the efficacy and economics of producing power from coal, four open-cycle magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) processing schemes were selected for study. Each involved a different mode of coal combustion and level of gas cleanliness. The options considered were: (1) coal burned in a slagging combustor; (2) suspension gasification with slag removal prior to combustion; (3) parallel cyclone combustors, one operating fuel rich and the other operating with excess air; and (4) suspension gasification by the hot exhaust gases from the MHO duct with ash removed prior to combustion. Option 1 has the highest ash content in the combustion plasma and as a result would have the greatest operational difficulties associated with it. Options 2 and 4 have the cleanest MHD combustion plasma. For coal priced at $4/ton, the power generating cost of option 4,11.78 mills/Kw-hr, is the highest, with Option 1, at 9.04 mills/kW-hr the lowest. These costs may be compared with a conventional power cost of 9.92 mills/kW-hr for the late seventies. Capital costs of three of the four options were competitive with those of conventional thermal power plants employing stack gas S02 cleanup systems. Option 2 has the most favorable combination of operating characteristics and power cost. It was concluded that a clean, high-temperature working fluid can probably be produced from coal without leading to depressed system efficiencies and exorbitant capital costs.

Crude shale oil prepared by gas-combustion retorting of Colorado oil shale was hydrogenated over a cobalt molybdate catalyst at an operating pressure of 1,000 psig, temperatures of 781° and 761° F, and liquid hourly space velocities of 0.10 and 0.05 Vo/Vo/hr, respectively. The yields of total liquid products and the amounts of nitrogen and sulfur removed were comparable with those obtained at an operating pressure of 3,000 psig and a liquid hourly space velocity of 1.0 Vo/Vo/hr. Approximately 1.5 times as much gasoline was produced at the lower pressure and space velocities.

The Bureau of Mines has developed a quantitative Analysis for pyrite in coal by X-ray diffraction that can be accomplished in little more than 1 hour. To minimize the sample analysis time, data processing has been completely computerized with pertinent output information displayed on a VR12 cathode-ray tube display. Use of this computerized system is not only advantageous during the experimental stages of the pyrite analysis project but would also be essential if the X-ray diffraction procedure is accepted as a standard method of analysis.

1. Introduction This document represents Part II of our final report on the development of a "Remote Sealing System for Extinguishing Coal Mine Fires. " It is a technical report which summarizes the results of system development and field demonstration. Part I of this two - part final report is an Operator's Manual for the application of the Remote Sealing System to a coal mine fire. 1.1 Background When coal mine fires go out of control and can no longer be fought directly, the standard fire fighting technique is to construct air-tight seals in the mine passages leading to the fire area so'--,that the oxygen supply to the fire is". cut off. Ultimately, it is desirable to isolate the fire zone in such a way that normal operations can resume in the remainder of the mine. The construction of seals in the- mine causes the atmosphere to pass through a toxic and explosive phase. Explosions, if they occur, are not only hazardous to the men working at the sealing operation, but can also undo much of the sealing work which has already been accomplished. Sealing of passageways surrounding the fire zone from within the mine is extremely difficult and dangerous. Methods for direct sealing are detailed in "Control of Mine Fires'. 1 An alternative to this approach is the technique of remote sealing. This involves drilling boreholes which intersect the mine passages at the locations where the desired seals are to be constructed. The seals are then constructed by pouring material down the borehole and filling a segment of the passage from bottom to top. During this operation, there are no personnel in the mine, all operations taking place on the ground surface.

Using bench-and pilot-scale coking facilities, the Bureau of Mines produced experimental coke from blends of char with Sunnyside coal (high-volatile A bituminous) from Carbon County, Utah. At bench scale, additions of char made from lignite improved resultant cokes when concentrations of up to 60 pct were used in the blends. At pilot scale (500-pound movable-wall oven), four chars made by entrained-bed carbonization techniques from the parent Sunnyside coal and from a North Dakota lignite were used in two-component blends with the Sunnsyide coal. Chars from Sunnyside coal had volatile matter contents of 5.8, 9.8, and 16.0 pct, moisture-free basis; the char from the lignite had 16.6 pct. In twenty-five 500-pound tests, improvement in coke quality was observed from all blends at char concentrations to 17.5 pct. The best coke, produced from a concentration of 12.5 to 15 pct of S.8-pct volatile char, exhibited physical properties approaching those of an industrial coke produced from Sunnyside coal blended with three higher rank blending coals. Studies were also made of the effects on coke quality of char source, of particle size, of comparative use of char and of a blending coal, and of prolonged coal storage.

4. Preliminary Study - Remote Seal Checker 4.1 Introduction Determination of the completeness of each individual seal at the time of its emplacement is essential for an effective remote sealing system. A satisfactory seal checking technique should provide a signal which: (1) indicates percentage completion as the seal is emplaced (2) provides a definite indication of a complete seal (3) indicates the size of the unsealed area if a complete seal is not feasible This information is required to establish the need for additional seal material, the need for additional seals, and the risk likely involved in entering the mine., In many situations it is as important to know the quality of a seal as it is to build an effective one. It is likely that with repeated use the remote sealing technique developed by Foster-Miller Associates will be sufficiently reliable and predictable to preclude the seal checking requirement. It is recommended, however, that each seal be checked during construction to insure its completeness and increase the level of confidence so necessary in reopening the mine. 4.2 Description of General Problem Several characteristics of remote mine seals are important in considering techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of these seals. An analytical procedure developed by the Bureau of Mines was applied to the separation and characterization of a 370° to 535° C distillate from Swan Hills (south field), Alberta, Canada, crude oil. Investigators determined the general characteristics of the crude oil by the Bureau's routine method for crude oil analysis. Suitable fractions were prepared for instrumental analyses by utilizing such techniques as isothermal and molecular distillations, chemical treatment, silica-alumina gel chromatography, and gel permeation chromatography (GK). A detailed characterization of the 370° to 535° C distillate was possible by the application of GPC-mass spectrometry correlations and nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry. Semiquantitative data based on mass Z series distributions were determined and are shown. The data will be valuable in developing future processing techniques and in calculating yields for converting high-boiling distillates into more useful energy forms.

APPENDIX A - PNEUMATIC TRANSPORT OF FLY ASH 1. Introduction Two types of pneumatic transport of fly ash are critical to the success of (1) Transport of fly ash from the fly ash truck to the entrance to the borehole. Depending on the surface topography, this may be horizontal, decential and ascential. (2) Vertical downflow of fly ash through the borehole. All fly ash trucks have limited pressure with which they can pump the fly ash. Thus, the pressure drop in the fly ash hose will define the maximum length for pumping and consequently the maximum distance that the fly ash truck can be parked from the auxiliary blower. The same relationships describe the flow of the dilute fly ash-air mixture produced by mixing with the auxiliary air from the blower and thus define the selection of the pipe diameter. These are im¬portant considerations in the proper selection of the location of the passages to be sealed and the type of surface preparation required. The flow characteristics of fly ash down the borehole determine the selection of the minimum borehole diameter and the blower pressure. This appendix presents theoretical analyses of these flow regimes and summarizes the limited experimental data obtained during the field tests at Grant Town, described in Section 8.4. The analysis for the borehole flow is presented first as it is of greater interest to the program. This is followed by a discussion of the horizontal flow.

Electrophoretic mobility measurements were made on samples of Florida phosphate slimes to determine the optimum conditions of coagulation and precipitation in aluminum sulfate solutions. The addition of silica sand and other selected materials as mutual coagulants has demonstrated the practicability of coagulating two dissimilar particle systems by elimination of the repulsive double layers. By proper selection of the solution and its concentration, the reduction of the double layer to a zero point of charge causes coagulation and rapid precipitation of both particle systems. Confirmation was found in filtration tests and sedimentation tests.
