Passive seismic monitoring is a useful tool for measuring wave propagation in rock mass in deep underground mining. About 20000 mining ? induced seismic events of a hard rock mine, are identified and investigated. The travel times of source-receiver pairs allow us to demonstrate temporal change in velocity. It was found that the average P wave velocity is about 6000 m/s in the mining regions. Velocity investigations on the data during about three months around the main shocks show a significant decrease of the average seismic wave velocity after the main shocks. The sudden drop of average velocity change after the main shocks implies the creation of new fractures in the rock mass due to the main shocks. Afterward, the average velocity increased to a normal level after a time duration of several days. A reasonable explanation for the post seismic velocity increase is that opened cracks begin to close due to crack healing.

Guided seismic wave propagation was studied in the Lower Freeport (6A) coal seam in the Oak Park No. 7 mine near Cadiz, OH. Three component geophones were implanted in the coal at distances ranging from 72 m to 183 m from the seismic source. Both Love- and Rayleigh-type modes were observed but the Love-type mode produced the best data. Detailed analysis was performed on the best Love data and a Dziewonski map of group velocity vs. frequency was constructed. This map was in excellent agreement with a theoretical dispersion curve calculated for a model of the coal seam. The Love wave group velocity was found to have a minimum value of 510 m/sec at 275 Hz. Only the fundamental mode contributed significantly to the observed signal and it was observed up to the maximum distance available.

As mining fronts converge in sill pillar extraction, the mine seismic hazard can be significantly altered and large seismic events have been known to occur. This study used common seismological tools to analyze the extraction of highly stressed sills from two deep Canadian mines with the objective of characterizing the rock mass failure process and relation to large seismic events. The approach treated a sill pillar as a mine-scale failure process, meaning the temporal and spatial analysis scales needed to exist on a similar scale to a significant part of the mine. The temporal analysis scale overlapped with the entire mining sequence, included several years of data to establish long term change in the characteristics of rock mass failure. The spatial analysis scale included the rock mass surrounding a large part of the convergent mining sequence. To accommodate the large spatial and temporal scales, the highest magnitude 2% of events in the dataset were analyzed. Similar results were shown for sill pillars in both mines. Changes in event location, time, magnitude, energy index and apparent volume were similar to expected behavior of rock failure. Indications of strain hardening and strain softening were observed in the sills. The hardening period was characterized by a high rate of small events, high energy index and low apparent volume, giving an indication of high stress and low rock yield. The softening phase was characterized by a decrease in the rate of small events concurrent with an increase in the rate of large events, low energy index and high apparent volume, indicative of release of stress and increase in deformation. Large magnitude seismicity was strongly related to the softening phase, with several Nuttli magnitude 3.0+ events occurring shortly after the transition from hardening to softening failure regimes. Sill failure was indicated by consistently low EI and low levels of seismicity and seismic hazard in the sill pillar.

Longwall mining began within the Pittsburgh coalbed of Pennsylvania (PA) in the early 1970?s. Originally, longwall mine layouts were designed to fit within existing room-and-pillar operations, where panels were limited to that of typical production panels, e.g. a few hundred feet wide by a few thousand feet long. In these early designs, the gate entries were comprised of chain pillars similar to those found along main entry systems or within pillar recovery sections. The modern longwall mine has little in common with their 1970?s predecessors. Today the entire mine layout is designed around the longwall mining method. The longwall panels have grown to well over one thousand feet in width with lengths now measured in miles. In addition, development pillar sizes and shapes are matched to specific performance requirements.

INTRODUCTION The demand for specialty metals in industrial applications is in it's healthiest state since the late 1970'8, and several specific markets are recording record sales. Such metals as gold, silver, zirconim., titanium, beryllium, gallium, germanium, the platinum group, and the lanthanides accounted for sales in excess of $2 billion in 1985 among the end uses covered in this report. Although specialty metals as a group have suffered the effects of recessionary pressures in the past, these metals have proved more resiliant than such large volume metals as copper and nickel. This is due to the unique physical properties they possess which makes the threat of substitution or replacement through technological development uneconomic. The outlook for these specialty metals is optimistic in electronics, catalysts, ceramics, and alloys, and their specialty status results .in a combined average annual growth in demand of 7% through 1990. WHAT MAKES THESE METALS SPECIAL? Such characteristics as electrical conductivity, corrosion resistance, catalytic activity, thermal stability, and optical properties allow the term specialty to be applied to these metals. More importantly, all of these metals possess more than one of these qualities, as shown in Table 1. [ ] These five major functions are important in the end uses for these metals, although the specific applications vary somewhat. Conductivity in term of low or high electrical resistance is of obvious importance to electronics manufacturers. Producers of circuit boards or semiconductors require such metals as gold, palladium, platinum, and gallium due to their low electrical resistivity. However, these producers also require such metals as beryllium in the oxide form for insulation components because of the compound's low electrical conductivity. Although the lanthanides' conductive characteristics are not particularly attractive in electronics, they are of great importance to alloy manufacturers producing permanent magnets for automotive and computer applications. Corrosion and wear resistant properties are extremely attractive to a number of end-use industries, particularly in view of the estimate by the United States Bureau of Mines that $10 to $50 billion in losses are experienced by U.S. industry due to equipment corrosion and $100 billion due to equipment wear. The strength of high purity titanium and zirconium make these metals the obvious choice for corrosion and wear resistance particularly in the chemical processing industry, where the ability to maintain integrity in corrosive environments is a must. Heat exchangers, nuclear control rods, and a number of parts in jet engines have benefited greatly from the use of these metals. However, such other specialty metals as beryllium, and the lanthanides also improve the wear or corrosion resistance in various products. For example, a beryllium-copper alloy contact maintains it's spring like character, and does not loose this character after repeated use, which could result in the loss of an electrical contact. Lanthanide, in the form of cerium oxide, is commonly employed in alloys used to produce catalytic converter casings for the purpose of reducing damage by corrosive road salt. In some instances, the catalytic activity of several of the specialty metals assists in the economic production of other materials. If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

Whether you buy your minicomputer from a manufacturer or another vendor, the first thing you must do is define your needs. With good planning, the initial cost will be low and your return on investment will be maximized over the long term. Involving all members of your staff who will he using the new computer in the planning phase is also important. Their participation will alleviate any potential concerns they may have about new equipment, and their suggestions will provide valuable input for your specifications. After you define your proposed system, survey available hardware and software. The survey will help you in the next step, preparation of specifications. The specifications, along with a quote request, are then sent to various manufacturers. Consider the Manufacturer When selecting your minicomputer, one important item to consider is the manufacturer. Remember, when you buy a computer, you're also buying the services of a computer company. A firm that makes a commitment to its customers and provides a product that is field tested before releasing it for sale is preferable. Examine the company's maintenance and support packages, since every machine requires preventive maintenance. Does your manufacturer or original equipment manufacturer (OEM) support service sites in your area? Has their service record been commendable? Will they provide training for your personnel and a supply of circuit boards so you can retain a degree of self-service autonomy? Three methods of buying a computer involve the manufacturer, an OEM, and the systems house. Buying direct from the manufacturer means you go straight to the source, using no middleman. This gives you maximum flexibility; you can consider every alternative and many possible combinations of computers, peripherals, and software until you find exactly the right system for you. The OEM buys computers direct from the manufacturer and builds them into his own computerized, special purpose product. He usually sells a complete package, including software and hardware, and often noncompetitive equipment as well (a scientific or engineering instrument, for example), designed for the mining market. Because he offers a packaged product, the OEM can often charge less for the system than if you put the pieces together yourself. In many ways, the OEM also provides a unique system. And while the OEM sells a packaged solution, he also usually has the special market knowledge necessary to modify the system to meet your unique needs, if necessary.

9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition

Proper selection of large walking draglines, based on sound engineering principles and field experience, has not kept pace with the large capital expenditures needed to buy these stripping machines. The use of large walking draglines for stripping overburden in US surface coal mines grows steadily, but equipment selection continues to pose problems. An improper size, model, make, or spoil reach selected for a particular stripping application results in additional, unnecessary coal production costs. Large walking draglines are being used to dig deeper tar sands at the Syncrude operations near Fort McMurray in Northern Alberta, Canada. This application is compared with typical deep digging operations and dragline use prevalent at typical US strip mines.

This frequently asked question has the implication that there is one circuit which is universally the right circuit. The answer has been sought ever since it has been necessary to break rock to liberate entrapped mineral values. With every new contribution to the art and the science of comminution, the scope of the discussions broaden. It is not even possible to define what the abstract term best means.

An optimum method for selecting exploratory drilling locations has been developed. The process has been modelled as a highly non-linear programming problem subject to constraints. Solution involves an iterative algorithm which converges rapidly and procedures have been developed to distinguish between local and global optima. The algorithm has been implemented as an interactive computer program which allows the user to influence directly the solution process and to evaluate the effect of any manual adjustments to the optimal solution.

The application of conveyor belting in bulk materials handling is crucial to the success of most mining enterprise selection of the cover rubber grade and thickness has a direct bearing on the cost per ton conveyed. Current and future demands placed on belt covers by higher speeds, increase capacities and greater lifts means today's cover will not be adequate for tomorrow's applications. The simple selections of RMA Grade I and I1 and MSHA above and below ground need to be expanded upon. This paper describes various new approaches for selecting conveyor belt covers for specific applications. It also presents examples of material and compounding techniques available to the belt manufacturer to improve the performance of their covers.

The continuous operation of decanters in the mining industry relies heavily on the use of synthetic flocculants. Today, as plants seek to lower production costs by increasing throughput it is necessary to obtain optimum performance from the flocculant. Factors affecting such optimization include charge and molecular weight selection, and efficiency of mixing the highly viscous polymer solution with the feed slurry. Beyond maximizing dilution of the solution, the last factor is often ignored. This paper describes a series of calculations, based on fundamental transport theories, that have been used to describe flow conditions within decanter feed wells and to help select flocculant addition points. Examples are shown for the case of hydroxamated polyacrylamide flocculants in the Bayer Process, where proper selection of the addition points can result in lower flocculant dosage and better control of the decanters.

When designing an efficient and effective support system for burst-prone ground, it necessary to select the most appropriate, i.e., the ‘right’ support components, including areal and reinforcement components. For this paper, it is assumed that the areal support is not the weakest link and the support performance is controlled by the rock reinforcement and holding components (bolts). We discuss the loading modes of rockbolts under static and dynamic loadings and analyze published data from laboratory and field tests. The mechanisms of energy absorption of dynamic rockbolts are presented and rockbolts are categorized based on factors such as energy absorption capacity, energy absorption rate, direct and indirect energy absorption capacities, rock mass bulking or displacement control, and shearing resistance capacity. Guidelines for selecting the ‘right’ rockbolts to build an effective rock support system for burst-prone ground are provided.

Today, man is able to probe space because of technological advancements including the ability to control certain combustion reactions very precisely. The recent adjustment of the attitude of Skylab by radio command from earth is an excellent example of such control. It is strange, and indeed unfortunate, that very little is known about the mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, the primary fuel for rotary kilns. The selection of a coal for direct pulverized firing of a rotary lime kiln may be determined by trial and error, persistence of sales personnel, proximate analyses, grindability, or apparent BTU cost. Occasionally, the only question asked is, "How much lime will it make?" To study the behavior of a particle of coal in the combustion stream of a rotary kiln is most difficult. We must, therefore, discuss the general mechanism of combustion of pulverized coal, and relate this mechanism to the selection of a proper coal for a rotary kiln. The classic three T's -time, temperature, turbulence -must be enlarged upon for a better understanding of the problem. Pulverized coal occupies only 0.01 per cent of the volume of air required for its combustion. This mixture behaves like a gas and the general laws governing the movement of solid particles in gasses are in effect. The differential velocity between air and coal particles depends on forced and natural convection, diffusion, and the length of time each particle is in the combustion space. As a particle of coal absorbs heat from its surroundings, it begins to give off volatiles". These gasses ignite as their kindling temperature is reached, and burn readily because of the excess oxygen immediately available. Combustion proceeds at this stage by the outward diffusion of gas from the coal particle into the surrounding oxygen-rich envelope. We could say combustion at this stage represents a small coal particle surrounded by an envelope of volatiles burning at their point of contact with sufficient oxygen. This release or expulsion of gasses from the coal may result in exfoliation or disintegration of the coal particle. If this occurs, and it is desirable that it should, it will accelerate the final stages of combustion. The escape of volatile material from the particle of coal and its subsequent combustion will cause increased turbulence around that individual particle. Ignition is maintained by radiation from gasses and solids in the combustion system, and most importantly, re-radiation from the kiln refractories and the process load.

The Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project (HRBT), initiated by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), will add two new 1.5-mile TBM bored tunnels to the two existing immersed-tube tunnels between artificial islands, part of the connection between Norfolk and Hampton under the Hampton Roads Harbor in Virginia, USA. The new bored tunnels will be built by Hampton Roads Connector Partners (HRCP), a joint venture of Dragados USA, Vinci Construction, Flatiron Constructors and Dodin Campenon Bernard. This paper covers technical discussions that led HRCP to select a Variable Density TBM to address the challenges of this tunnel project, including but not limited to (i) the diameter of the bore: a 46 feet (14.04 m) diameter machine that constitutes the second-largest TBM ever used in the United States; (ii) shallow ground-cover under the water table; (iii) challenging and varying geology along the alignment, with mixed-face conditions and different types of ground modification zones; and (iv) the high TBM operating pressures required—all these and other challenges in a sensitive marine environment.

As free milling oxide gold ore reserves are depleted, more mining companies are having to evaluate the available alternatives for treating refractory deposits. The selection of a treatment process can be very difficult; and, despite the claims of their respective proponents, there is no one process that will continuously prove superior. Selection of the optimum process for an individual deposit is contingent on the size of the deposit, the grade of the deposit and the refractory nature of the ore. Since extensive metallurgical test programs are usually required to determine the optimum extraction process, an inappropriate initial selection may prove costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the steps involved in evaluating a refractory ore in order to expedite the evaluation of the required process through the feasibility study stage.
