INTRODUCTION The Falconbridge mine ore body extends about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length and the deepest developed ore is on the 6050 level below surface. The ore zone varies in width from a few inches to over 30 m (100 ft) and the average width is 4.9 m (16 ft). Access levels are driven in the ore at 53.3-m (175-ft) intervals. The principal method of mining is overhand longitudinal cut-¬and-fill. Prior to 1962 timber square-set stoping as a secondary extraction method was used for about 15% of the total production. Undercut-and-fill was intro¬duced at Falconbridge in 1962 as a potential replace¬ment for the square-set method in heavy ground. The undercut-and-fill method was developed by Inco in the 1950s, its principal application being to transverse pillar mining. Falconbridge made modifications to this method. A feature of the mine is the No. 1 flat fault which dips 0.79 rad (45°) towards the northeast. The main characteristic of the fault is the presence of large swells of ore directly under the plane of the fault. The ground under the fault area is highly fractured and associated with massive sulfides. In the past, the ore under the fault was recovered, with difficulty, by either tight cut¬and-fill or square-set stoping. In the 1970s these meth¬ods were supplanted to a large degree by the under-cut-¬and-fill method. An advantage of the current undercut-and-fill method which uses cemented fill compared to the cut-and-fill and square-set methods is the reduction of dilution due to better control of the walls. At Falconbridge mine, it is estimated that the grade of ore produced by undercut¬and-fill is improved by approximately 10% over other methods. Where undercut-and-fill is used in very weak ground, a much greater improvement in grade can be expected. Table I shows mining production for 1974. The undercut-and-fill method was first used at Falconbridge during 1962. The first longitudinal stope was prepared for undercutting by laying down laminated beams the length of the stope and installing a lagging mat floor on top of the beams. Unconsolidated tailings fill was poured on top of the mat floor. As the cut ad¬vanced under the floor, heavy posts were placed under the laminated beams at 1.8-m (6-ft) intervals. During 1966, a radical change was made to the method when tailings fill, consolidated with portland cement, replaced the unconsolidated fill. This development eliminated the laminated beams and heavy mat floor and greatly im¬proved the stability of the stope. This system, with minor variations, is currently used at Falconbridge mine. APPLICATION The undercut-and-fill method is used to mine in¬competent ground, sills or floor pillars under mined-out levels, or a block of ore isolated between levels. It is occasionally used to advantage in sequencing produc¬tion from various mining blocks. This is done by mining a block of ore cut-and-fill method and at the same time mining the ore block directly underneath by the under¬cut-and-fill method. The undercut-and-fill mill holes at Falconbridge are either boreholes, stripped timbered raises, or steel mill holes. Boreholes and rock raises tend to slough in heavy and broken ground which increases dilution when sloughing exceeds the ore width outline and also in¬creases the difficulty of moving down to start the new cut. For example, in one installation, a 1.2-m (4-ft) diam borehole sloughed to a size of 3.7 x 5.5 m (12 x 18 ft). The undercut-and-fill method usually requires a mill hole extending from the level below the ore to the top horizon of the ore block. The customary methods of providing a mill hole are: 1) A borehole is driven from level to level through the ore block and a chute installed on the bottom level (Fig. 1). 2) An existing raise is used as a mill hole. If the raise is timbered, a steel mill hole is installed inside the timber and tailings fill poured around the steel mill hole (Fig. 1). 3) An existing steel mill hole, situated at one end of a mined-out stope, is used as the mill hole for an ad¬jacent undercut-and-fill ore block. The mill hole posi¬tion is determined when planning the mining sequence of the first stope (Fig. 2).

INTRODUCTION Mined underground chambers specifically designed for the purpose of storing liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) at ambient temperatures have been in use for over thirty years. The first caverns were developed by Warren Petroleum of Tulsa, Oklahoma, in 1948, for its plants in Texas. The basic concept of an LPG-storage cavern is to create a space in an impervious formation at a depth sufficiently below the water table so that if any movement of fluid occurs the ground water will enter rather than the gas escape from the cavern. In the past, the primary reason for LPG storage underground has been its attractive cost advantages over steel storage on the surface. At current prices the cost of storing 7.949 ML (50,000 barrels) would be equivalent, whether stored on the surface or underground; whereas 79.494 ML (500,000 barrels) of storage underground costs only one-fifth of surface storage. It is usually uneconomical to excavate less than 79.494 cu m (50,000 barrels) of storage space. The fixed costs - engineering, mainshaft and ventilation shaft - are a substantial part of the total cost, whereas the incremental costs for excavating additional storage are relatively low. Recent concern over the hazards posed by the handling and storage of LPG and liquefied natural gas (LNG) has led to a new interest in the underground storage of these gases. The Expert Scheduling is a new, exciting method for scheduling underground and open-cut coal mines. A key feature of the Expert Scheduler is the adoption of an expert or artificial intelligence system. The expert system makes decisions regarding the schedule, such as which area should be mined. With existing scheduling systems these choices are made by the scheduling engineer. Developing one area may be better than another if it offers better quality or lower costs. Information the engineer considers in these decisions could be; • coal tonnage and quality targets, • equipment utilisation, • mining cost, • and other practical constraints. In expert scheduling a number of experts are appointed to make these decisions. A number of mining strategies are examined for each period. Information for each strategy is evaluated by "experts" and the "best" solution adopted. The method is based on the Blackboard Techniques. With this technique information is presented to "knowledge sources” or "experts" by the Blackboard Controller for their "opinions". These "opinions" are examined by the Blackboard Controller to select the best strategy. Engineers can readily add experts to the system, and modify the weighting of experts to suit mining conditions. Using an Expert Scheduler means that many schedule op- tions can be analysed quickly with full repeatability.

"Mining environments, whether open-pit or underground, pose difficult conditions for any sensor system. However, the ever-increasing need for automation requires the application and use of sensor systems in order to gather relevant information required for process automation. Ultra-Wideband radio (UWB) is a robust technology well-suited for underground applications. These applications include positioning and communication. This paper introduces UWB and presents results from measurement campaigns in harsh environments. Using filtering and sensor fusion precise and robust positioning can be achieved even in confinements of underground mining environments. INTRODUCTION Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining ever more importance. Especially in light of ongoing efforts to reach the goals of what was coined as Industry 4.0 by the German government, the development of IPS is inevitable. According to a recent report about the “Global Indoor Location Market Outlook 2019” a growth from $ 597 million in 2014 to $ 3961.8 million by 2019 is expected [1]. Hence, there is also an economic incentive to pursue this topic. The mining industry is profiting from this development as well, since IPS are the basis for the automation of especially mobile mining equipment. Ideally, indoor positioning systems offer to position the equipment continuously and, what’s more, even in real-time [2]. Different approaches are available for IPS. The difference of these systems lie in terms of accuracy, cost, precision, technology, scalability, robustness and security. [3] At the Institute of Advanced Mining Technologies (AMT) of RWTH Aachen University, research suggests that one of the more auspicious approaches for IPS in the mining sector is the employment of ultra-wideband (UWB) radio technology. Because of this, there has been ongoing research into the best way to introduce UWB technology for the application in underground environments. The research started with an indoor positioning application, which only consisted of the UWB system. In the course of this, different algorithms were developed to enhance the system’s performance for the use in the mining industry. This led to the idea of sensor fusion in which the information of the UWB system are combined with infrastructure-independent technologies like inertial navigation systems (INS) and image-based technologies."

INTRODUCTION Rapidly increasing capacities of equipment used to load and handle material at the face require improved haulage equipment and better methods of transporting the mined materials or "muck" to the shaft or slope and out of the mine to the processing plant on the surface. Increasingly, those transportation demands are being satisfied with underground belt conveyors. Such con¬veyors provide the most readily available, most efficient, and most reliable method of carrying materials in a continuous and rapid flow from the face loading equip¬ment to the surface plant. Almost universally, belt con¬veyors are used in coal mines and those nonmetallic and metallic mines operating in relatively flat bedded deposits. Belt conveyors are available in a wide range of capacities, mainly limited by belt width, belt speed, and weight of the material to be transported. They can be used on the level, on grades, on the surface, or under¬ground. They provide a rapid and constant flow of material, transporting the material as quickly as it is mined. Length of belt conveyors is almost unlimited. Where the haulage distance exceeds the practical capacity of a single conveyor unit, two or more conveyors can be used in series. Single conveyors more than 1.6 km (1.0 mile) long are common; multiple-unit conveyors in series operation are transporting materials over distances exceeding 16.1 km (10 miles). Depending upon mate¬rials being transported, job conditions, cost of the terrain being spanned, and alternative haulage methods avail¬able, conveyors can be conceivably economical for even greater distances. Table 1 lists maximum belt speeds recommended for most materials, relating belt speeds to belt widths. Table 2 lists capacities of typical conveyors of various widths and speeds, transporting commonly mined mate¬rials of various weights. ADVANTAGES OF CONVEYOR SYSTEMS For several years after their initial introduction, belt conveyors were available only with rigid side frames or a supporting structure of steel and concrete. That con¬struction limited underground applications, due to the cost and relative inconvenience of extending or retract¬ing the belt conveyor in the confined underground environment. However, during the last 20 years, wire-¬rope side-frame belt conveyors, as shown in Fig. 1, have become widely used in underground applications. Even wider use can be anticipated with their application to the fast movement of materials in surface mining operations. Advantages of the wire-rope side-frame belt con¬veyors were realized first in panel or section belt haulage in coal mines. Soon afterward, use of those conveyors was extended to gathering and main-line haulage. The mobility of the wire-rope side-frame conveyor is the principal reason for its success. The conveyor can be extended, retracted, dismantled, moved, and reassembled easily, even in relatively confined under¬ground spaces. The intermediate structure consists of rope support stands, wire-rope side frames, wire-rope tie-off stands, and the necessary carrying idlers and return idlers. An important and very attractive feature is the ability to suspend the conveyor from the roof in an underground mine, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving more room for improved housekeeping and allowing passage of face-service equipment, haulage vehicles, and other mining equipment. The conveyor's open construction allows quick and easy visual inspection of its com¬ponents for failures or malfunctions; it also facilitates checking and correcting conveyor-belt alignment. Other advantages contributing to the attractiveness and widespread application of wire-rope side-frame conveyors in main-line, slope, and surface installations include: lower capital costs, lower installation costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced impact on idlers and belting, reduced spillage and minimal cleanup, improved conformation to undulating terrain or mine bottoms, and the ability to span most obstacles without heavy structural support. CONVEYOR CLASSIFICATIONS Underground belt conveyors are classified normally according to their function. Generally, conveyors are classified into one of four main categories: 1) Panel or section conveyors normally receive the material to be transported directly from the face-haulage equipment. 2) Gathering conveyors are secondary haulage units that usually receive material from two or more panel conveyors. 3) Main-line conveyors transport all the material mined in the underground operations to the slope or shaft. Normally, they receive the material from two or more gathering conveyors. 4) Slope conveyors generally operate in tandem with the main-line conveyor, providing continuous Table 1. "In 2004 works started for the now completed seven-level automated car park accommodating 480 parking spaces inside the pre-existent “Morelli cave”, located in a strategic area in Naples. Since 470 BC Greeks initiated the growth of the fascinating world of the underground Naples, of which this cave belongs. It seems that once here the god Mithras was worshiped. It’s also became a quarry for tuff extraction and in 1600s it became an aqueduct serving the area. In 1853 the Bourbon Tunnel, a project commissioned by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon to allow easy escape from the Royal Palace in case of riots, was connected to this network of tunnels. The cavern became an air raid shelter during the Second World War, then a deposit of cars and motorcycles in the '50s and' 60s, a disposal area and it has been abandoned in the last 40 years before it’s new utilization. INTRODUCTION Over time, the overcrowding and congestion of major cities’ historic centres has led to seeking spaces underground that can accommodate activities and car parks, as in the case of the Morelli cavity, site of the future car park by that name. Before describing its characteristics, design solutions, and executive problems, it is necessary to introduce the site historically into the broader landscape of the cavities present below ground in the municipality of Naples. The province of Naples, which includes the area of the Municipality of Naples, has a large number of cavities. The existence of “Naples underground” is connected with the morphological and geological conformation of its territory, consisting of tuff stone which has entirely special features of lightness, brittleness, and stability. The first transformations in the territory’s morphology, taking place thanks to the Greeks starting from 470 BC, initiated the growth of the fascinating world of Naples underground. These transformations were dictated by water provision requirements, which led to the creation of underground cisterns to collect rainwater, and by the need to recover construction material to erect the buildings of Neapolis. In subsequent centuries, the city’s expansion led to the construction of a proper aqueduct, which allowed drinking water to be collected and distributed thanks to a series of cisterns linked to a dense network of tunnels. During Roman rule, the existing aqueduct was expanded and perfected, but with the rise of the Angevins in 1266, the city saw great urban expansion, which obviously corresponded with increased extraction of tuff from the subsoil to construct new buildings. This confirmed a particular feature of Naples: that of having been generated from its own innards, with buildings rising directly above the quarry that provided their building material."

U. S. Steel's Oak Grove Mine experienced several top hinge failures on their caving shields. It was determined that all the caving shields needed to be replaced with new caving shields before more thilures occurred. The cost and amount of time needed for several scenarios of caving shield change outs were compared. This paper discusses how Oak Grove Mine decided to and did change 126 caving shields in six specially designed jig stations underground during a longwall move using their own UMWA employees.

This paper examines the relevant theory, experience, and past practices relating to development mining near gas or oil wells. It addresses setback distance for both coal and stone room-and-pillar mining. This study also involved a review of accident reports involving well interceptions and downhole well surveys. It provides technical considerations for decisions regarding safe setback distances for development mining throughout the United States. The study’s scope is limited to mining near active or inactive (i.e., non-producing, abandoned or inadequately plugged) wells with known surface locations.

In July 1986, the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) asked Secretary of Labor William Brock to form an advisory committee to advise the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) on rules and regulations concerning the use of diesel powered equipment in underground coal mines. The request was made under the Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977. The union's principal concern was with the chronic and acute health effects of breathing diesel exhaust. In July 1988, the advisory committee recommended that MSHA promulgate a variety of health and safety regulations. It also concluded that diesel particulate matter should be considered carcinogenic (MSHA, 1988). Now, seven years later, there are nearly twice as many pieces of diesel powered equipment in underground coal mines. MSHA, however, has not promulgated a single regulation to govern the use of this equipment. MSHA must fulfill its public responsibility to protect the health of miners. Regulations that take account of the considerable body of knowledge concerning these health effects must be a top priority of the incoming assistant secretary of labor for MSHA.

Subsidence from underground coal mining alters surface water discharge and availability. The magnitude and areal extent of these impacts are dependent on many factors, including the amount of subsidence, topography, geology, climate, surface water - ground water interactions, and fractures in the overburden. These alterations may have positive and/or negative impacts. One of the most significant surface water impacts occurred in July 1957 near West Pittston, Pennsylvania. Subsidence in the Knox Mine under the Coxton Yards of the Lehigh Valley Railroad allowed pan of the discharge in the Susquehanna River to flow into the mine and create a crater 200 feet in diameter and 300 feet deep. Fourteen railroad gondola cars fell into the hole which was eventually filled with rock, sand, and gravel. Other surface water impacts from subsidence may include the loss of water to the ground water system, the gaining of water from the ground water system, the creation of flooded subsidence troughs, the increasing of impoundment storage capacity, the relocation of water sources (springs), and the alteration of surface drainage patterns.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 96 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be ?calculated to be serviceable? and the communications systems ?redundancy?. These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using the tools that are available and commonly used by the Reliability, Maintainability, & Availability community.

Every underground coal mine in the United States must deploy and operate a wireless communication and electronic tracking system. This paper addresses the reliability and availability of an installed tracking system and the communications infrastructure that supports it. This paper assumes that the tracking system uses the communication system to perform its operation. A particular interest is the requirements for the systems to operate continuously without failure after a mine disaster for 24 hours, and the requirements in the MINER Act for the tracking systems to be “functional, reliable and calculated to be serviceable” and the communications systems “redundancy.” These requirements imply a certain reliability and availability. This paper describes a quantitative way to assess these systems requirements, using tools that are available to and commonly used by the reliability, maintainability and availability community.

Introduction The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act was passed in 1977 to put an end to the uneven environmental standards and enforcement established by various coal mining states in the US. One year after passage, the Secretary of Interior was directed to promulgate permanent program regulations implementing Title V provisions of the Act. These regulations were to form the basis for state regulatory programs under the Act and to allow states to assume primary regulatory responsibility. To implement the underground mining provision of the Act, the Secretary is directed in section 516(a) of the Act to promulgate rules. But they must take into consideration the differences between surface and underground coal mining. The regulations developed by the Secretary in 1979, with respect to subsidence control, included: • a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; • substantive provisions establishing performance standards for subsidence control; and • provisions providing for the prohibition of mining under perennial streams, impoundments larger than 24.6 dam3 (20 acre ft), and certain public facilities and urban areas. Industry challenged the Secretary's regulations implementing the subsidence control provisions. The litigation was consolidated with all other challenges to the permanent program regulations. (Permanent Surface Mining Regulation Litigation, Civil Action No. 79-1144; D. D.C., May 16, 1980.) In two opinions dealing with the multitude of issues raised by both industry and environmental groups, the US District Court of the District of Columbia ruled against industry. It upheld the promulgated subsidence control provisions. The US Court of Appeals stayed the appeals pending the agency's review and revision of its regulations. The regulatory reform was conducted in accordance with the order from the Secretary of Interior and the President in 1981. As a result, the subsidence control regulation was revised, reproposed, and finalized in June 1983 (Federal Register). This regulation, along with others, was again challenged by environmental groups and industry. On Oct. 1, 1984, the court, after finding the Secretary's reading of the Act reasonable, upheld the 1983 subsidence regulation except for one section. On Feb. 21, 1985, in accordance with the court's ruling, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) suspended a portion of 30 CFR 817.121 (c)(2) concerning the damage correction requirement for structures or facilities and reproposed it on July 8, 1985 (Federal Register). In conjunction with a request for public comments, OSM now also seeks comments on the omission from the 1983 rule of the requirement in the 1979 rule regarding a presubsidence survey and monitoring of damage to structures. Technical issues related to subsidence regulations The subsidence regulations of June 1, 1983, consist mainly of two parts: a subsidence control plan as part of the permitting process; and substantive provisions establishing performance standards. The People's Republic of China has abundant coal resources with proven reserves amounting to 582 Gt (641 billion st). Recognizing coal as a major energy source on which to build the country's industrial and economic base, there has been a rapid increase in production since the founding of the People's Republic. In 1949, only 29.4 Mt (32.4 million st) of coal was mined. Production has increased to 576.5 Mt (635.5 million st), exclusive of Taiwan, at present, making China the third largest coal producing country in the world. Plans call for a 4-5% increase in annual production for the next 20 years. Coal constitutes 70% of the primary energy consumption in China. The remaining 30% is divided between petroleum and natural gas with 26% and hydropower with 4%. Coal use and consumption is divided as follows. General industrial use comprised 48.9%, power generation uses 20.1%, and coking accounts for 10.5% (6.3% for metallurgy and 4.2% for chemical industry). Domestic use such as home heating and cooking makes up 17.8% and coal-fired steam engines for railways uses 4.7%. Coal Districts Coal underlies about 1/18 of China's land area. It occurs in 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities. In addition, the western interior region, which has not been explored, may contain sizable reserves. Based on geology, geography, and administration, the coal fields can be grouped into five districts as shown in Fig. 1. The north China district, the heart of the industrial base for the country, has the most extensive and largest deposits of the five districts. This amounts to almost 40% of the country's total reserves. The largest coal basin with proven reserves of 181.4 Gt (200 billion st) and the most exploitable seams is located some 300 km (186 miles) southwest of Beijing (Peking) in Shanxi Province. Centered around Taiyuan, the compound field extends from Datong in the north to Xian in the south. Its western extension is not known fully. The Northwest and Northeast districts contain the second and third largest deposits. The biggest coal field in South China is located in the Sichuan and Guizhou Provinces near Chongqing. At present, it is not known if sizable coal measures exist in the Tibetan district. Coal Types China's coal varies widely both in age and rank. Geologically, coal measures were deposited from the lower Carboniferous (Pennsylvanian of the US) and Permian of late Paleozoic, mainly during the Jurassic of the Mesozoic and peri¬odically throughout the Cenozoic. The People's Republic of China has 582 Gt (641 billion tons) of proven coal reserves. At present, 576.5 Mt (635.5 million tons) of coal are mined a year which makes China the third largest producer of coal in the world. Underground mining accounts for 95% of the total production. This paper will discuss the coal districts, coal types, jurisdiction of coal mining, and methods of underground mining. The article also will outline China's objectives in future planning and development of its coal reserves.

In 1947, coal production in Western Canada was 10 Mt (11 million st) which predominantly came from 120 underground mines. By 1968 production was down to 1 Mt (1.1 million st). Production in 1981 was back up to 29 Mt (32 million st), but only 1.5 Mt (1.7 million st) of the total was from underground mines. In fact, because of competition from open-pit mines, only two underground mines were operating in 1981-the McIntyre and B.C. Coal mines. While several other underground mines are being planned, this article will deal with only the two in production. Geology The geology in Western Canada is frequently complicated; hence only more regular deposits are mined. Coal is generally thick, often steeply pitched and usually soft or well cleated. The 5000-km (3,100-mile) coal belt that runs from the Yukon to Mexico is well developed in Western Canada. It is divided into two distinct regions-the Rocky Mountain Lower Cretaceous coals and the mostly uniform level Upper Cretaceous coals of the plains area to the east. Isolated pockets of coal occur at Vancouver Island and Hat Creek. Hat Creek's massive 300-m (984-ft) thick geologically recent lignite deposit is 250 km (155 miles) inland. Geography The infrastructure of Western Canada is shown in Fig. 1 along with the locations of the two mines. Both rely on exports of premium low volatile metallurgical coal mostly to the Pacific Rim. The rail distance from both mines to port is 1100 km (684 miles)-accounting for a significant portion of the sales cost of the coal. Mining Methods Two main mining methods are used-room and pillar and hydraulic. Longwall has been attempted and is being considered again. In the past, a simple hand method used gravity to help mine most of the coal on steep pitches. Levels were driven in the seam, rising slightly to assist in draining. On the advance, mining would start at the upper level, usually from adits driven in the side of the mountain. Rooms or angles were driven up 100 m (328 ft) at a suitable angle for the coal to flow down. On retreating out of the level, the pillars would be taken, starting from the highest point, using batteries to stop coal or rock flushing down the room. Batteries consisted of three to six stout wooden posts set at an angle to resist material flow. Coal loading was directly from chutes at the bottom of raises into 1- to 2-t mine cars hauled by diesel or battery locomotives. Often output was restricted by the supply of empty cars. Mechanization began in the 1960s but was difficult in these conditions. Mines such as Canmore and Coleman continued operation into the 1970s but closed because steep seams, high methane emissions, and faulting made mining difficult. Underground coal mining systems have kept pace with developments that have occurred in other types of mining. A diversified group of machines are now available with high horsepower motors, built-in microprocessor technology, and numerous options to satisfy miners' needs in various geological environments. The results will be a greater degree of mechanization and recovery of coal from inclined seams, thins seams, and seams mined in lifts from shallow as well as deeper deposits. This article is based on a general suvey carried out by the authors to detemine the current status of mechaniztion and systems development in underground coal mining. It indicates that the next two decades will see increasing use of longwall mining, which has already reached a high degree of sophistication. Automation, remote control, and robotics are the key words of the future. Data transmission from underground to surface and over long distances will be almost routine. Many components of the high technology industry that are just being considered by the mining industry regarding equipment health and perform¬ance monitoring, quality control, application of expert systems, and computer networking will become a routine part of underground mining technology. Within the next 21 years, "manless" mining, first attempted about 25 years ago, will become a reality. Case histories of water problems in underground mine shafts and tunnels are outlined to illustrate varying degrees of sophistication in grouting techniques currently applied in such construction. The interception of water underground can be one of prior knowledge, i. e., the site investigation provides necessary data to plan a grouting program prior to construction start, or excavations may encounter "changed conditions" or unplanned water. The latter includes catastrophic inflows and emergency situations where the structural integrity of a building or concrete shaft lining are jeopardized. The presentation of this paper outlines some applications of grouting work in underground mine construction throughout the United States in a variety of geological provinces and for a variety of minerals.

The underground construction for the Phase I Combined Sewer Overflow(CSO) Project is on an impressive scale by any measure, appearing more so in a midsize city like Providence, RI. The Narragansett Bay Commission recently completed $350 mil-lion in construction to improve the water quality in Narragansett Bay. This project included a number of serious challenges, delays, and disputes. Looking back on this complex project completed within budget, it is hard to consider the work as anything other than a success. Along the way, this outcome did not always appear certain.

Billions are being spent in shoring up aging infrastructure in the United States and other places, and new underground projects are being put out for bid.With each new project, comes new equipment, technology and tunneling methods. So it is incumbent on tunneling professionals to constantly improve their knowledge of the profession. This is where spending a few days with other underground construction professionals can assist the tunneler in keeping up.Every two years, tunnelers and underground construction engineers, contractors, suppliers, designers and owners from around the world gather for the Rapid Excavation Tunneling Congress (RETC). The 2017 conference was held in June in San Diego, CA. The UCA of SME puts on the conference.This years’ RETC attracted 1,400 attendees. The accompanying sold-out exhibit totaled 188 service and equipment suppliers. In addition, the conference had the UCA of SME bookstore, where the new History of Tunneling in the United States book was introduced. And a short course on tunnel rehabilitation was featured.Technical programmingRETC 2017 featured nearly 100 technical presentations. Topics covered the breadth of the global underground construction industry. Here is a sampling of a few. The proceedings from the conference is available from SME, 303-948-4200, www.smenet.org.Accomplishing extraordinary tasks as a machine supplier for Metro Doha: The construction of the Metro Doha in the State of Qatar established a modern, safe, efficient and integrated public transportation network. Upon final completion of multiple phases, the network will comprise four metro lines with a length of 216 km (83 miles) and 100 stations. Phase one comprises 112 km (43 miles of underground tunnels (56 km or 22 miles of twin-tube tunnels). Twenty-one earth pressure balance tunnel boring machines (TBM) were deployed by the four different joint ventures. The project was initiated, managed and supervised by the owner, Transport Authority Qatar Rail.Phase two of the Doha Metro will start upon the completion of Phase One in 2019 (Qatar Vision 2030). The owner placed full faith in the manufacturer’s abilities to deliver equipment of high quality, state of the art standards within the given time frame. This paper focused on the manufacturer’s scope of delivery and on the supplier’s high standards of quality in production, logistics and services."
