Present methods of boring large hole mine openings are briefly reviewed. Factors that influence the design and choice of down-the-hole equipment for rotary drilling large holes are discussed. With formation drillability taken as a starting point, graphs and charts are given as an aid in the selection of bit load, circulation system, flow rate, drill stem, cutter design and rotary speed.

The Singapore Land Transport Authority (LTA) is currently expanding capacity by extending their Metro system from South of the city to the North East end of the island. The scope of Contract 704 involved excavating a long reach of tunnel which had a complex rock/soil interface comprised of fresh granite overlaid by clayey sand. Two 6.5 m diameter Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) TBM’s were used to bore the tunnels. These machines were designed so that both hard and soft rock could be excavated. The cutter head was equipped with a combination of both rippers and disk cutters. Soil conditioning was achieved by delivering foam through a multiple port injection system. This very irregular profile of the interfaces posed many challenges to the equipment and the people.

Boron, estimated to comprise about 0.001 percent of the earth's crust (Fleischer 10), as an element is never found free in nature, although its compounds are found in many localities. the borates are the most important. Sassolite (B(OH)3) and boracite (Mg6C12B1406), non-borates, are-of-minor importance. The crystal structures of most natural borates are still unknown. A classification based solely on the ratio of boron to the total number of cations has been devised (Palache 28). This classification divides the borates into four, sub-groups; anhydrous borates, hydrated borates, borates containing hydroxyl or halogen and compound borates. Only four or five minerals of the hydrated borates group have ever been used commercially. In more recent years, the sodium borates have comprised all but a 'small fraction of all borates used. Borax, the hydrated borate compound, is the most important of all boron compounds. It has been used so long and so often that the layman often confuses borax and boron and, applies the terms synonymously.

Borates are defined as ' 'salts or esters of boric acid; a compound containing the radical B203" (Bates and Jackson, 1987). Borates are defined by industry as any compound that contains or supplies boric oxide. A large number of minerals contain boric oxide, but the three that are the most important from a worldwide commercial standpoint are: borax, ulexite, and colemanite. These are produced in a limited number of countries (Fig. 1), dominated by the United States and Turkey, which together furnish about 90% of the world's borate supplies (Lyday, 1991). Production in the United States originates in the Mojave Desert of California; borax and kernite are mined by US Borax from its large deposit at Boron. Borate containing brines are pumped from Searles Lake by North American Chemical Co., and a limited amount of colemanite is mined by Newport Mineral Ventures from Death Valley. Turkish production is controlled by Etibank, the national mining enterprise, which supplies most of the commercially traded ulexite and colemanite from mines in the Bigadic and Emet Districts, plus borax from the huge deposit at Kirka. Borate minerals have been employed in a wide range of uses for many centuries, dating from at least the 8th century when they were used primarily as a flux for assaying and refining gold and silver. Their valuable properties and relative rarity soon stimulated international trade in borates; Marco Polo claimed to have trans- ported Chinese borate minerals from Tibet to Europe, and his home port of Venice was the center for borate imports and use throughout the Middle Ages (Travis and Cocks, 1984). Borates were traded at relatively high prices for highly specialized applications into the late years of the 19th century. At that time they were being used for medicines, food preservatives, ceramic glazes, and in expanded applications as metal fluxes. It was in that era that borax was discovered in Clear Lake, CA, and more significantly, the playa deposits of western Nevada were found and exploited by F.M. "Borax" Smith and others. Research and development by Smith's company began the evolution of borates from a high priced commodity with a few specialized uses to the relatively low priced chemical raw material used in large tonnages on a worldwide scale today. Borates are often defined and sold by their boric oxide or B,03 content, and most statistical data are listed in tons of B203. Of the products sold by the industry, borax pentahydrate or 5 mol and boric acid are the most commonly traded commodities. Boric acid plants are operated by all of the major borate producers. Glass fiber insulation is the major end use in the United States followed by textile glass fiber and borosilicate glass, detergents, and ceramics. Detergent usage continues to be a major end use in Europe.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The US was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1990. Boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled 1.13 Mt (1.2 million st), including 565 kt (662,800 st) of boric oxide (B2O3) in 1990, according to US Bureau of Mines estimates. Total value amounted to $404 million. This was slightly higher in production than 1989 but down in value, reflecting a softening in boron product prices. Total world production of boron mineral concentrate and chemical tonnage in 1990 was estimated at 3 Mt (3.3 million st), which corresponds to about 1.3 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO,. World production in 1990 was about the same as in 1989.

The boron review arrived too late to appear in the June issue. The United States was the world's second largest producer and the largest consumer of boron compounds during 1991. According to the US Bureau of Mines, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the US totaled about 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st), yielding about 608 kt (670,000 st) of BO, in 1991. Total estimated value was $440 million. That level of production was equal to 1990 revised production figures. Value was greater by $37 million, however, reflecting a strengthening of boron product prices. The US continued to supply essentially all its own boron while maintaining a strong position as a source to foreign markets of sodium borate products and boric acid. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1991 remained at 1100 people, about the same level as in 1989. The Bureau of Mines estimated total world production of boron in 1991 - mineral concentrate and chemical - at about 2.9 Mt (3.2 million st). That corresponds to about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st) of BO ,. World production in 1991 was about equal to revised 1990 levels. US production Mines and processing operations in southern California were the only domestic sources of boron mineral concentrates and chemicals in 1991. US producers, in order of quantity of production, were US Borax and Chemical Corp., North American Chemical Co., and American Borate Co.

The boron review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue. The United States was the world's largest producer and consumer of boron compounds during 1992. The US Bureau of Mines estimated that boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled 1Mt (1.1 million st) in 1992, yielding 521 kt (574,000 st) of B203 for a total estimated value of $333 million. That was about 20% less than 1991 revised production figures, and less in value by $107 million. The United States continues to provide essentially all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products in 1992 was about 900 people, the same as in 1991. In 1988, 1250 people worked in the boron industry. The Bureau estimated that total world production of boron in 1992 was about 3 Mt (3.3 million st), or about 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st)of B2O3. World production in 1992 was about equal to revised 1991 levels. According to US Bureau of Mines (USBM) estimates, boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled about 1.05 Mt (1.15 million st), yielding 560 kt (617,000 st) of B203, for a total estimated value of $370 million. This production level was about 2% less than 1993 revised figures. The United States continued to provide nearly all of its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid for export. Domestic employment in the mining and beneficiation of boron products during 1994 was 900 people, about the same as in 1993. USBM estimated total world production of boron of about 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st), yielding 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of B203. World production during 1994 was about the same as during 1993. USBM estimates US reserves to be about 210 Mt (231 million st) of ore and world reserves to be about 630 Mt (694 million st) of ore.

According to estimates from the US Geological Survey(USGS), boron mineral concentrate and chemical production in the United States totaled an estimated 1.1 Mt(1.2 million st) yielding 602 kt (663,000 st) of B2O3 for an estimated value of $462 million. This level of production exceeded 1994 revised production figures by about 9%. The United States continued to provide nearly all its own boron supply while maintaining a strong position as a source of sodium borate products and boric acid to foreign markets. Right in the heart of Boston Harbor lies Deer Island, where a ten-year, 6 billion dollar sewage treatment plant is under construction. The 9.5 mile long, 25.5' diameter Effluent Outfall Tunnel is the center piece of this program. A Robbins double-shielded TBM is currently driving this challenging tunnel some 400 feet below sea level. This paper will discuss the set-up and operation of this Tunnel Boring Machine in driving the longest single heading tunnel ever built in North America.

The Republic of Botswana, one of the newer countries of southern Africa, attained independence on September 30, 1966. It covers an area of about 225,000 square miles (582,000 square kilometers) which makes it slightly larger than France, or slightly smaller than Texas. It is bounded by Zimbabwe, the Republic of South Africa and Namibia, including the Caprivi Strip. Angola and Zambia are close neighbors. (Map 1). Botswana lies at the center of the southern African plateau at a mean elevation of 3,300 feet (1,000 m). It is a natural habitat for most species of African fauna. The rolling sands and extensive grasslands of the Kalahari Desert cover the southwest. The climate is sub- tropical. Summers, although tempered by north- easterly breezes, are hot, but mean maximum temperature seldom rises above 100°F (38°C). Winters are dry with wide temperature variations, which often give rise to frosts.

Incorporating a bottleneck analysis into the mine plan can provide a significantly better basis to make economic decisions regarding materials handling systems. Every materials handling system has a bottleneck. The bottleneck at a mine may change over time as a function of location or time. Since a mining reserve is a finite amount and can usually only be mined once, knowing how the bottleneck changes can provide a critical backdrop to capital investment decisions, especially those affecting the materials handling system. A bottleneck analysis can better quantify the expected 'return and also indicate the optimal time to complete tile project.

"Classic engineering economics provides the mining engineer with a fundamental approach to choosing between capital spending alternatives. This approach has been heavily used over the years and is an accepted technique for most investment decisions. There is a shortcoming that I have run into over the 15 year period when I worked in business planning roles. The classic time value of money approaches such as Net Present Value, Return on Investment, and Internal Rate of Return provide good estimates, but the input assumptions may fall short of describing the real material differences required by these analysis techniques. If the cost benefit analysis is defined solely on the improvement of the item being replaced or improved, the true profitability of the decision may be overestimated. Productivity improvement based capital projects can yield more accurate forecasts when conducted in concert with a “bottleneck analysis”. INTRODUCTION A review of the Theory of Constraints, (Goldratt, Cox, 1984) Lean, (Womack, 2003) (Rattner, 2006) and Six Sigma (Cryger, DeFeo 2015) lead us to recognize that these process improvement methodologies are oriented to the manufacturing process. These systems generally involve a factory that the material moves through on the way to becoming a final product. The mining challenge has many similarities to manufacturing once the ore has been won and made ready for processing. Before that point, however, the process is somewhat inverted while the ore is being won. Instead of the material moving through the factory, the factory is moving through the material. The Theory of Constraints (TOC) was used in an underground context by Baafi, Cai and Porter at 2015 APCOM, but even this groups’ analysis did not carry the concept from mining to shipping of the final product. There can be spatially distributed data that can affect the mining throughput constraints, some of which can be determined from exploration results. Identifying constraints can lead us to mapping productivity bottlenecks on future mining. Knowing this may improve decision making by eliminating one of Jim Fishbein’s three deadly sins of strategic planning: incomplete planning. When evaluating capital investment alternatives you should evaluate the impact of any proposed improvements on the entire operation. At the core of any mining system is the materials handling system. This can be typically expressed as the system that handles the raw material from the “face” through processing and then handling the finished product as well as the waste material. A “Bottleneck Analysis” is an investigation into the factors limiting a material handling system’s productivity (Goldratt, Cox, 1984). Mining material handling systems are usually composed of several linked components such as draglines, shovels, loaders, hydraulic excavators, continuous miners, longwalls, highwall miners, bucket wheel excavators, LHDs, feeders, conveyor belts, stockpiles, crushers, processing plants with various circuits, and waste handling systems. Each of the aforementioned components has a slightly different throughput capacity. When these are linked in series, the one with the lowest throughput capacity limits all of the others, creating the bottleneck for the system. Every material handling system has a bottleneck. In the mining environment, a subtle, but very significant phenomenon may also occur. The bottleneck may change as a result of a change in the raw feed qualities, face recession, overburden depth, digability, learning curve, and many others factors which may be derived from the drillhole data. These parameters often change as a function of the location in the reserve base, and may also vary with time."

Design and construction of temporary shafts for underground facilities often require evaluation of bottom stability due to rupture (blow-ins) caused by water pressure acting on a bottom plug. This paper provides an overview of shaft bottom stability evaluation methods for the case of a relatively watertight soil plug which overlies an artesian aquifer. Methods of considering plug perimeter shear, plug buckling and pressure relief are discussed. Minimum factors of safety are suggested. Future use of the shaft subgrade is also considered. Bottom plug failure case histories at several shafts are evaluated. This paper should be useful to project designers, ground support system design engineers and contractors involved with construction of shafts for underground facilities

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. A project's rate of return (ROR) [The list of all the acronyms used in his text is provided at its end.], be it an internal or external one, usually needs to be approximated. The success and efficiency of an approximation procedure depend on the quality of the initiating parameters such as bounds or seed values (guesses). Current approximation procedures commonly use bounds and guesses dictated by intuition rather then by mathematical consideration. The paper presents three ROR-bounding and six ROR-guessing approaches and examines their suitability on the examples of the typical project cash flow patterns.

Computer based techniques for solving the Ultimate Pit Limit Problem have appeared in mining literature since the early 1960's. The majority of papers pertaining to this subject can be partitioned into one of two categories: discussion of the pros and cons of a particular algorithm, or a case study presenting specific applications of an algorithm. Subsequently, there has a1 so been considerable debate concerning the best techniques between, essentially, two camps: those favoring the moving cones techniques, and those favoring the techniques which yield true optimal pit designs. The purpose of this paper is not to add to this debate, but rather to present a few new ideas (partially a new look at an old idea), which can be easily implemented to noticeably improve any ultimate pit limit approach independent of the particular algorithm used. These ideas fall under the heading of "bounding the optimum" (Barnes and Johnson, 1980).

Valuations can be molded, twisted and misinterpreted. Cases of spurious scope setting; limits to the information or access by the valuer; difficulties with the lack of comparative valuations; inappropriate valuation methods and outright speculations are described. None should be accepted by an experienced, independent minerals valuer. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (TheAusIMM) is working on a Valmin Code for which a Manual of Best Practice and Valuation Guidelines may be developed.

BP Minerals America (BPMA) has completed its $400 million modernization of Kennecott Utah Copper's Bingham Canyon mine. Modernized facilities include the in-pit crusher, conveyor, ore storage area, concentrator, ore pipe-line, and tailings pipeline. With modernization, Kennecott will achieve substantial cost reductions. Bingham Canyon is now one of the lowest cost copper producers in the world. And the mine will continue to provide jobs and income in Utah for another 30 years or more. The Modernization Project began in February 1986. The work took 33 months. In late 1987, the construction force peaked at 1100 workers. Kennecott Utah Copper now employs a permanent work force of 2100 employees. Less equipment and more efficiency The modernization work has increased the scale of the facilities that transport and process copper ore. A large, continuous transport system has replaced multiple haulage units. Fewer but larger pieces of equipment have replaced many crushing, grinding, and flotation units. The result is less maintenance, fewer employees, and improved metal recoveries. About one-third of the $400 million modernization project is directed at improving ore movement by eliminating rail transport. The new concentrator accounts for the remaining two-thirds of the modernization investment. The modernized plant was started up in stages. In February, ore was fed to the crusher. By the end of March, the three grinding lines were operating and the flotation circuit was producing copper concentrate. In July, the design through-put rate of 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) was reached. October saw the achievement of targeted metal recoveries that corresponded to the fully modernized operation. It is estimated that Bingham Canyon will annually produce 181 kt (200,000 st) of refined copper, 9.3 t (300,000 oz) of gold, 71 t (2.3 million oz) of silver, and 5.4 kt (12 million lb) of molybdenite. Current Bingham Canyon production is about 97 kt/d (107,000 stpd) and a similar amount of overburden. Some 70 kt/d (77,000 stpd) of ore are processed through the in-pit crusher and 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of ore are transported by rail. The Bingham Canyon mine has yielded more than 11 Mt (12 million st) of refined copper. In 1863, precious metals - silver-bearing lead - were first discovered in Bingham Canyon. What was once a mountain is now a huge open pit. In fact, the mine is the world's largest man made excavation. The pit is some 4 km (2.5 miles) wide and 0.8 km (0.5 miles) deep. Since the pit began operating in 1906, more than 4.5 Gt (5 billion st) of material have been removed. Modernized facilities Electric 21 m3 (27 cu yd) or 23 m3 (30 cu yd) shovels are used to load the haulage trucks. Both 154 t (170 st) and 181 t (200 st) trucks are used to haul the ore to a mobile, in-pit crusher. The crusher replaces three crushers located at the old concentrators. There are two dumping locations at the new crusher, which can handle two trucks a minute. The 1.5 x 2.7 m (60 x 109 in.), 745 kW (1000 hp) Allis-Chalmers gyratory crusher reduces the ore to 254 mm (10 in.) size or less and delivers it to the conveyor. The crusher and conveyor systems are capable of handling 9 kt/h (10,000 stph) of ore.
