Molecular design plays an important role in development of new flotation reagents. Group electronegativity calculation is a main method of molecular design. It is commonly used in calculating the hydrophilic-hydrophobic balance of reagents, particularly in designing chain length of flotation reagents for located minerals. But there is a limit to group electronegativity method. The method can only apply to those of [Ø]known straight-chain compounds ([Ø] is the hydrophobic energy of each -CH2- , determined by experiment). In this Paper, we propose another new calculation method: fragment method of flotation reagent. The method could be used as a supplement of group electronegativity method to design and calculate flotation reagents without any limitation. With the fragment method, we can calculate the hydrophilic-hydrophobic performance of any known or unknown reagents including those complicate structure compounds such as cyclic, branch, heterocyclic and so on by summing the appropriate structural elements (fragment). The principle, calculation stages and some results of designing new-type flotation reagents by fragment method are presented in this paper.

11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. The choice of fragmentation method is one of the most fundamental aspects of mine design, and often has a major impact on the safety and economic viability of an operation. Almost exclusively, underground mining operations rely on either mechanical excavation or drill and blast techniques to extract rock. Each of these fragmentation methods has distinct advantages and disadvantages, and each is appropriate, and economic, for different mining conditions. However, the choice of fragmentation method can have a pronounced effect on the amount of damage created in the rock mass surrounding the opening. This paper reviews a number of case studies where both mechanical excavation and traditional drill and blast were used in underground mines. Ground support requirements in the mechanically excavated areas are compared to the support requirements in the blasted sections in order to demonstrate the potential safety and cost benefits of the various fragmentation methods.

"The Multiple Blasthole Fragmentation (MBF) model models multiple explosive charge contributions and the effect on fragmentation of delay timing with its associated scatter for each blasthole. The model uses near-field blast vibration attenuation parameters and the ground p-wave velocity as inputs for part of the in situ rock property to model rock fragmentation. It models most blast design parameters explicitly and simulates the effect of wave reinforcement due to the interaction of simultaneously arriving waves or diminishing cooperative contribution from long delay intervals between charges within a blasthole or among blastholes. The fragmentation size is calculated at three-dimensional grid points within a blast, and the fines and oversized blocks are treated explicitly. The model takes a surveyed irregular geometry of the free face of a blast as the calculation boundary.This paper presents a case study on applying the MBF model at an openpit mine. Near-field vibration measurements from signature hole blasts were conducted to obtain the stress-wave magnitude and attenuation parameters as well as ground sonic velocity. A production blast was then monitored with the corresponding fragmentation measured, serving as site-specific inputs to the MBF model. Various blast design scenarios were then simulated to develop ones that provide better fragmentation to improve mill throughput for the mine. IntroductionThe semiempirical fragmentation models currently found in the literature (Cunningham, 1987; Lownds, 1995) cannot explicitly model contributions from multiple blastholes with varying delay intervals. Most of these models are not three-dimensional. Furthermore, these models predict an average fragmentation size within a volume surrounding a blasthole and use the average size to generate a size distribution over the volume. The percentage of fines and oversize blocks is included in the distribution. Typically, such models are inadequate for predicting fines and oversize blocks (Cunningham, 1987)."

The degree of fragmentation obtained in primary quarry blasting has always been a factor in the speed of digging' the muckpile This paper will discuss a case history of increased production and associated lowered costs from increased fragmentation. The quarry under discussion is fairly new, located in Georgia, and is in the large operation .category. Loading is done by three yard shovels, and, primary crushing by a 48" x 60" haw crusher preceded by a 5' wide feeder. The stone is a hard granite gneiss, of Los Angeles rating 22, and apparent specific gravity is 2.68. The product is shipped to points in that state for railroad ballast, concrete aggregate, and road building stone. Inasmuch as fairly large shovels and a large Jaw were to be utilized, initial drilling and blasting were pointed toward producing fairly large sized muck for this large equipment. This was following a concept somewhat in vogue for some years in the Southeast wherein many large equipment plants would tend towards larger fragmentation, and smaller equipped plants would conversely tend toward attempts at smaller sized rock piles for smaller shovels and crushers.

Draglines are the main energy consumers in strip mines. Given the growing cost of energy and environmental concerns, it is important to properly understand dragline energy efficiency. The goal of current research at Missouri University of Science & Technology is to account for operator practice and operating conditions in modeling dragline energy efficiency. This paper presents preliminary correlation analysis and a framework for stochastic modeling of dragline energy efficiency. Thirteen operating parameters (including cycle times, payload, swing angle, and height of dump pile), operator working schedules, operating conditions, and drag, hoist, and swing energies were monitored for an 85 yd3 dragline. Operator effects were examined by two-sample t-tests. The relation between the parameters and energy consumption were assessed by correlation analysis and a stochastic modeling framework has been proposed for dragline energy efficiency. The results show that operator effects are significant (p< 0.05) and energy efficiency is correlated with operating parameters. The completed model will help the coal mines better predict energy consumption, with uncertainty, for different operating conditions.

An overview is provided of Franklin Industrial Minerals mica mine and plant operations located near Velarde, New Mexico. Operated by Franklin Industrial Minerals since July of 1990, several process and product modifications have been developed and instituted to improve the operation. In addition to a brief history of site operations, descriptions of the mining, beneficiation, delamination grinding, and product classification processes are reviewed. Supportive topics discussed include equipment modifications and improvements, product application diversification, and specific product characterization. Also reviewed are the key areas of safety, environmental responsibility, and programs pertaining to process quality control and product quality assurance.

A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

Metal ions, such as chromium (Cr) and vanadium (V) are found as trace impurities in mineral dust. Since metal ion mediated free radical generation has been implicated in many disease processes, we carried out a detailed investigation of the metabolism of these metal ions by biological redox systems and the possible oxygenated radical generation therefrom. We found that highly reactive Cr(5+) species are generated in the reduction of Cr(6+) by NADPH-dependent glutathione reductase, lipoyl dehydrogenase, and ferredoxin-NADP+ oxidoreductase. The reduced metal ion species react with hydrogen peroxide, to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals in a continuous cycle. The enzymatic catalysis processes also involves the reduction of molecular oxygen to the superoxide [(0-1 2)] radical. Thus only a trace amount of metal ions chemisorbed on mineral dusts, such as quartz, can catalyze the generation of the highly toxic oxygenated radical species from cellular hydrogen peroxide, suggesting a new biochemical mechanism for mineral dust induced chronic lung injury.

The United States Cement, along with other industries, is being devastated by an unprecedented penetration of domestic markets by imported products. The overriding questions are: 1. Have foreign manufacturers improved their processes to an extent they can outperform U.S. producers in their home markets? 2. Is it gross inefficiency on the part of the U.S. producers that is allowing foreign producers to be capable of replacing a local U.S. producer in his normal home market? 3. Is there a combination of the first two questions that economically justifies this type of market overrun? The answer is a simple NO!. In a fair trade market atmosphere, U.S. producers are definitely competitive.

In 1936 a young Dutch geologist discovered an exposed ore mountain in the remote, mountainous province of Irian Jaya, Indonesia. This was the beginning of one of the most overwhelming challenges ever faced in obtaining mineral resources from the earth. The challenge was to traverse mangrove swamps and reach deep into the almost impenetrable jungles of the Jayawijaya Mountains which have an elevation of 4900 meters (16,000 ft.). The target was an almost inaccessible mountain of copper ore.

Equipment-washing facilities at Freeport-McMo-Ran?s Sierrita Mine in Arizona produce a mixture of oil and water that was difficult to dispose of easily or cheaply. However, after some changes in the facility, waste oil is now used as part of the mining process. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., head-quartered in Phoenix, AZ, operates copper, gold and molybdenum mines. It is the world?s largest producer of molybdenum. Heavy equipment used at the mine is hosed off periodically in the wash bay. The dirty water and oil mixture drains into the sump next to the bay. Oil was manually collected for disposal. This was a tedious and dirty process Mine managers sought a more efficient method of removing the oil. Instead of spending the time and effort skimming the tank with vacuums or sorbents, they enlisted the help of Abanaki Corp., manufacturer of the Model 4 Oil Grabber. Engineers designed the sump to utilize prevailing winds to blow the oil to one corner. This was the ideal place for the Abanaki skimmer. The skimmer removes the oil and discharges it into a plastic storage container. ?This reduces the time needed to keep the area clean, and the staff can focus on cleaning the equipment rather than worrying about the oil,? according to Jay Salerno, construction manager at the Sierrita Mine. Salerno is considering adding an optional oil concentrator to the skimmer to make the process even more efficient. The concentrator would remove any water picked up by the belt and return it to the sump, leaving nearly pure oil for disposal. Because the mine is located in the Sonoran desert, most of the water evaporates in the hot, dry air and is not reused.

During the last decade, use of freeze conditioning agents (FCA) to ease unloading and handling of both run-of-mine and washed coal during periods of cold weather has become an accepted practice by the coal industry. This paper reviews some of the mechanical means of easing the handling of coal during periods of cold weather, as well as their use in conjunction with FCA&apos;s. Factors required to promote a successful cold weather handling program are also covered. Mechanisms by which FCA&apos;s function and the influence of various substrate characteristics on the ultimate response to freeze conditioning agent performance are discussed. A modified approach to freeze conditioning is presented.

A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.SoC (O°F). Other areas where FCA has found utility has been de-icing conveyor belts, idler, idler arms and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

The problem of the freezing of moist raw materials, such as concentrates, in railroad cars during winter shipment has been a continuing source of both economic and operational trouble to the industry and to the railroad companies. The difficulties center around the discharging of frozen cargoes into the plant materials handling system. Because of cargo freezing, appreciable delays in car-dumping schedules occur each winter and cause additional expense for demurrage charges and for slowdown of plant operations. In one plant during one winter, a car dumper rated at 40 cars per day could dump only 3 cars per day in bad weather. Delays became so serious one winter, that 500 cars held in the yard became so badly frozen, that they were sent to the southern part of the United States to thaw after they accumulated an average of two months demurrage charges. These delays in car unloading become critical if unit or integral train concept is applied to the movement of raw materials. Anticipated savings in transportation costs through better equipment utilization are largely based on rapid loading and unloading cycles of whole trainloads. If freezing problems cannot be adequately solved, unit train operations cannot be operated to achieve the potentially large reductions in transportation costs. The freezing problem may tend to become even greater in the years ahead, because the unit train concept will allow the trains to run faster and consequently the heat loss will be accelerated due to the larger heat transfer coefficient. A compensating factor, however, will be the shorter travel time. Further, the sources of raw materials being mined are located farther north than before and the ambient temperatures during transit are going to be lower.

Two three-lane highway tunnels, 700 and 2900 m long, make up the driven tunnels portion of Melbourne City Link. Tunnel construction, using design-construct delivery, commenced in May 1996. Construction required excavation through varying rock conditions; temporary support included ground freezing, pipe-spiling, steel sets, and rock bolts. Permanent support for the tunnels required both drained and undrained tunnel cross sections using unreinforced concrete. This paper reviews the construction methods, and highlights some of the not-so-standard designs developed while construction was underway.

There are a number of issues associated with freight trains in non-electrified tunnels that are fundamental during the planning and operation of a rail tunnel. During uphill operation, increased air temperatures at the air intake locations of diesel trains can reduce diesel motor efficiency (stalling/choking) and affect HVAC systems. Strong airflows can aggravate fire scenarios due to fanning or water-reactive cargo materials. This paper focuses on the impact of freight trains on tunnel safety concepts, strategies to overcome heat issues at locomotive air inlets and air quality in tunnels operating diesel trains.

Manganese nodule projects were quite fashionable during the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s, low metal prices led to an almost complete reduction of such activities; however, the Law of the Sea incited the countries that signed it to build a strategy for this ocean resource. Gemonod was created in France in 1984 with a four-year mission. This paper presents the results of its program devoted to the technical and economic studies of nodule exploitation. A commercial mining system is presented. The nodules would be collected by a self-propelled miner and lifted hydraulically through a rigid pipestring. A complete optimized scenario has been built taking into account offshore mining, ore transfer at sea, transportation and processing to analyze the profitability of the project. Considering an average conservative basis for metal prices, after a deep analysis of the market, the return rate of investment of the project appears fairly interesting. These results are new and are explained in comparison with previous foreign studies. These results must not hide the innovative nature of the project nor the associated risks. This is why a mining pilot is required and has been specified by Gemonod.
