With decreasing ore grades, the tailings of mining operations are becoming of increasing interest as metal-containing secondary raw materials. The objective of the current work was to investigate chloride leaching of gold, copper, cobalt, nickel, and zinc present in the flotation tailings. In the current study, the effect of cupric ion as an oxidant (0–50 g/L) and NaCl (150–250 g/L) on metals extraction was investigated. The other parameters, such as pH (1.8), temperature (95 °C), solid/liquid ratio (25%), oxygen feed rate (1200 mL/min), leaching time (24 h), and stirring rate (950 rpm), were kept constant. Gold dissolution rate was shown to increase with increase in cupric ion concentrations up to 50 g/L. Also, increase in NaCl concentration up to 250 g/L increased gold extraction. Majority of the copper present in the flotation tailings could be dissolved with all the all solutions investigated. The other base metals, cobalt, nickel, and zinc extractions were also shown to increase with increase in the cupric ion and sodium chloride concentration. However, even in the absence of cupric ion addition (t = 72 h, 250 g/L NaCl), the final extraction of Cu, Ni, Zn, Co, and Fe increased up to 98, 93, 83, 76, and 80%, respectively. This shows the power of inherently originating oxidants present in the tailings. Furthermore, the solid analysis of the leach residue indicated that leaching the flotation tailings in pure NaCl may result in partial gold dissolution. The results demonstrate that significant amount of metals present in the tailings could be extracted even with only NaCl as added chemical in the presence of oxygen feed, oxidizing agents originating directly from the raw material. This can provide an advantageous cyanide-free method for extraction of metals from very low-grade tailings with low chemical consumption.

Chloride leaching has many advantages compared with other alternative processes to cyanidation because it has increased metal solubility, improved redox behavior and high leaching rate properties. Also, chlorination is a nontoxic and environmentally friendly process, which is sought by the mining and metallurgy industry. In addition to these advantages, chloride is an effective reagent for the dissolving of metals from refractory ores and process residues that have trace amounts of valuable metals waiting to be valorized.

AMAX Inc. climax's mine-mill complex at Climax, Colorado is best known for its molybdenite production: 50,000 TPY of molybdenite flotation concentrate (95% MoS2) from mill heads containing 0.35% molybdenite. Less recognized are the byproducts that are concentrated from the tails generated in the rougher flotation circuit (see Figure 1). Climax recovers a heavy mineral concentrate by passing the rougher tailings from molybdenite flotation over Humphrey spirals (Figure 2a). This concentrate is floated using xanthate at pH 4 to remove sulfides, principally pyrite. The tails from the pyrite float are then cleaned of quartz, feldspar and light minerals by tabling (Figure 2b). Amine flotation follows at pH 1.5 and 75°C to float monazite (Figure 2c). The present circuit at Climax dries the monazite flotation tailings and utilizes high intensity cross-belt magnetic separation Figure 2d) to generate a high grade wolframite concentrate and a low-grade cassiterite product, both of which are contaminated with the mineral brannerite, (UO, TiO, UO2)TiO3. The uranium specifications have recently become difficult to meet due to the increasing percentage of brannerite reporting in the mill feed. A plant is being built utilizing hot sulfuric acid and sodium chlorate to leach this uranium from the monazite flotation tailings prior to their being fed to the wolframite- cassiterite magnetic separators. This modification is the subject of our paper.

Empresa Minera de Mantos Blancos S.A. operates two copper mines in Chile: Mantos Blancos and Mantoverde. Oxide ore is processed by acid leaching followed by SX-EW to produce copper cathodes. In order to define the leach process adequately for each ore, an extensive metallurgical testwork program was carried out during the feasibility study for each of these projects. A combination of heap and dump leaching was selected for Mantoverde, while a modification to the existing vat leach operation was selected for Mantos Blancos.

The Smoky Valley Mine is jointly owned by Louisiana Land and Exploration Company, Felmont Oil Corporation and Case Pomeroy Company. Copper Range Company, a subsidiary of L.L. & E. is the operator of the mine. The mine is located about 60 miles (100 km) north of Tonopah, Nevada on Highway 376 (formerly 8A) in the Big Smoky Valley on the western flank of the Toquima Mountain Range In the shadow of Mount Jefferson. The mine is at an elevation of about 6100 ft. (1860m) and is situated on the southwestern flank of Round Mountain, the hill for which the town of Round Mountain is named. The ore is a rhyolitic iglmbrite with coarse gold occurring along fractures and with fine microscopic gold disseminated in the rock mass. Minor silver is associated nth gold. Annual mining is planned at 5.8 million tons (5.3 million tonnes) per year with 2.2 million tons (2 million tonnes) as ore (7,000 tons or 6,400 tonnes per day).

The leaching processes and mechanisms of weathered crust elution-deposited rare earth (RE) ores with ammonium sulfate were investigated for their high efficiency and low consumption exploitation. The leaching process is a typical reversible heterogeneous ion exchange reaction in liquid–solid systems. The raw ore and leached tailings were analyzed by SEM and FTIR. Results indicated that no dissolution or structural changes of the ores occurred during the leaching process. The migrations of RE3+, Al3+, and NHþ 4 in the leaching process were studied under various liquid–solid ratios. With increasing liquid–solid ratio, the content of NHþ 4 adsorbed on clay mineral by physical effect decreased, NHþ 4 adsorbed by ion-exchange increased, and the content of exchanged RE and Al increased until reaching equilibrium. The adsorption capacity of the RE ores for NHþ 4 remained about 0.61–0.63 mg/g. It was difficult to desorb NHþ 4 from RE ores with washing water alone. The leaching mechanism of Al was the same as RE, but the leaching of Al slightly lagged behind RE. At the optimal liquid–solid ratio of 0.4:1, the leaching efficiencies of RE and Al were 95.51% and 90.99%, respectively, and 56.65% of NHþ 4 remained in the leachate. After impurity removal and RE precipitation, the leachate can be reused by replenishing fresh leaching agent. The aim of this study is to enhance the leaching process of RE, restrain the leaching of impurities, and decrease the consumption of leaching agents.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, Kennecott Copper Corp., and New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology are cooperating on a research project to improve extraction of copper from previously leached waste dumps that are in part compacted and impervious to leach solutions. The field work is being done at the "J" leach dump, Chino Mines Division, Kennecott Copper Corp., Santa Rita, N. Mex. The laboratory percolation leaching tests were made at the U.S. Bureau of Mines Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center on drill core samples from the "J" dump to determine how much copper might be leached if permeability could be restored by explosive heaving or other means. The core samples from nine drill holes on "J" dump contained from 0.06 to 0.14 percent copper. Copper extractions ranging from 15 to 3 percent were obtained in 75 days by percolation leaching of minus-1-inch material with dilute sulfuric acid. The tests results indicate that about 2'7 percent of the copper remaining in the "J" dump could be extracted under ideal leaching conditions.

Leaching titaniferous magnetite concentrate with alkali solution of high concentration under high temperature and high pressure was utilized to improve the grade of iron in iron concentrate and the grade of TiO2 in titanium tailings. The titaniferous magnetite concentrate in use contained 12.67% TiO2 and 54.01% Fe. The thermodynamics of the possible reactions and the kinetics of leaching process were analyzed. It was found that decomposing FeTiO3 with NaOH aqueous solution could be carried out spontaneously and the reaction rate was mainly controlled by internal diffusion. The effects of water usage, alkali concentration, reaction time, and temperature on the leaching procedure were inspected, and the products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, and energy dispersive spectroscopy, respectively. After NaOH leaching and magnetic separation, the concentrate, with Fe purity of 65.98% and Fe recovery of 82.46%, and the tailings, with TiO2 purity of 32.09% and TiO2 recovery of 80.79%, were obtained, respectively.

A column reactor was applied for leaching with simultaneous flotation a complex sulfide ore in ferric sulfate-solution under oxygen pressure. Elemental sulfur and the flotable, nonreacted sulfides were collected in the froth and separated from the insoluble, nonflotable gangue minerals and solid particles formed during pressure leaching. The two-stage laboratory unit, built from Corning-glass elements is described. Results of the continuous leaching/flotation experiments conducted under 20-40 psig of oxygen pressure are presented, as are supplementary batch leaching experiments with iron precipitation under 150 psig oxygen pressure. High zinc extraction to solution and near total accumulation of lead sulfate in the nonflotable fraction are easily attainable. Relatively poor flotation of pyrite is probably caused by the partial oxidation of its sulfidic sulfur to sulfate.

Red Dome Gold Mine classifies ore types within the pit by gold and copper grades. Copper grades are further distinguished by total copper and cyanide soluble copper levels. At present, Cyanide Soluble Copper samples take six hours of agitating before they can be assayed. This agitation time produces results which are a proportion of the total cyanide amenable copper. This relates to our plant's performance. Frequently the total copper result is needed before we can begin the cyanide soluble copper analysis. This caused a protracted tum around time. Mennetech Pty. Ltd has produced a catalyst proven by David Martin Menne to accelerate the cyanidation of gold. David said that the information at hand indicated that Leach WELL TM also accelerates the leaching of cyanidable copper substantially. Test work was undertaken on-site at Red Dome Gold Mine to investigate the potential of Leach WELL TM to reduce the leaching period and therefore, the overall tum around time required for cyanide soluble copper determinations.

There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. Zinc ranks third and lead fourth in world nonferrous metal conumption. In 1972 the free world consumed 3,333,000 mt of refined lead and 4,422,000 mt of refined zinc. The lead tonnage was divided into the following end uses: storage batteries (42%), lead allows (7%), pigments and chemicals (11%), cable sheathing (9%), gasoline additives (13%), pipes and sheets (8%), and miscellaneous uses (10%). The corresponding distribution of zinc uses in 1972 was galvanizing (39%), die casting (26%), brass (15%), rolled zinc (8%), oxide excluding American Process zinc made directly from concentrate (6%), and other uses (6%). The pattern of usage of lead and zinc varies considerably from country to country. During 1972 in the USA 49% of refined lead was consumed in storage batteries, 19% in gasoline additives, and only 3% in cable sheathing, whereas in the United Kingdom 28% of the lead was consumed in batteries, 14% in cable sheathing, and 14% in gasoline additives. For zinc the major US uses were die casting (41%) and galvanizing (37%), with about 3% consumed as rolled zinc; corresponding usages in the same applications in France were 12, 28 and 28% and in Australia 12, 67, and 3%, respectively. Demand for both lead and zinc to the year 2000 will be characterised by modest to nil growth in mature economies, with positive 3 to 4 per cent annual growth rates in developing nations. Asia and China will feature significantly in this growth. Overall lead demand is expected to grow about 1 per cent a year, with industry becoming more dependent on the fortunes of the automotive industry as the lead-acid battery will be the only major end use to expand. Zinc will become more dependent on its main use, galvanising, as the automotive and construction industries move to high levels of dependence on corrosion prevention. Strong growth in zinc consumption in S.E. Asia, China and India is likely to feature widespread development of the continuous steel strip mini-galvanising line technology. Thank you Mr. Chairman for inviting me to this Conference. As an Australian I am honoured to be here to offer some thoughts about future trends in metal consumption -- with particular reference to the role of countries in my own neighbourhood, the developing Asian nations, including China. It is customary for a member of the producer fraternity to speak to the topic of future development. This is no doubt due to the fact that our companies are so often engaged in endeavours to determine the future prospects of the metals as essential background to massive investment decisions relating to the development of new mines and smelters. This is sometimes also applied in relation to the more painful decision of closures of aging operations. In this paper I have drawn upon recent studies by AM&S into the future of lead and zinc. While this work has been thorough and skillful, we are nonetheless left with uncertainty on a number of counts. Firstly. predictions in the past in our industry have not been all that credible. Need I remind a U.S. audience for instance of the Paley ' investigation setup by President Truman in 1950 to study U.S. copper requirements for 25 years in the future. Asarco's Simon Strauss gave those of us daring to forecast long term commodity trends a salutary reminder that the Paley Commission with all the expertise at its disposal missed the mark in its copper predictions by a very wide margin indeed. Additionally, it is difficult to take comfort from longer term economic forecasts. Too many important economic issues remain unresolved suggesting considerable caution. These include the threat of growing protectionism; low economic growth rates with stubborn unemployment levels; and levels of government expenditure at near saturation as a percentage of GDP, to name a few. However, on a more optimistic note. we can look to China, where there appears to be momentum in its economic growth; oil, where stable oil prices to the mid 1990's will contribute to inflation control; and the fact that LDC debt, while still a major issue, is declining in importance and priority. In the short time allocated to us. I wish to deal succinctly with the lead and zinc raw materials supply picture, which is one I do not believe will hold too many surprises for this audience. Following the review of raw materials supply, we will turn our attention to the changes in the pattern of demand towards the year 2000. emphasising the Asian position. In this context. I would like to focus on the theme of the changes in OECD consumption levels relative to those of the emerging nations. One area we will be paying special attention to is China.

The evolution of diverse types of heavy-duty vehicles that employ lead acid batteries. and The development of Galfan™ -- a zinc / 5% aluminum/mischmetal coating alloy designed to provided zinc-coated anti-corrosion protection in applications that are not well suited to traditional galvanizing. Because any product breakthrough must be accompanied by advancement and customer oriented thinking at every step in the chain of production and distribution, a concerted effort is required for market evolution to live up to its potential. As such, all those involved in the metals industries should not only track the progress made by technical and marketing innovations, they must participate as much as possible in their development and promotion.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines applied process mineralogy to investigate a lead and zinc deposit located near Story Creek, Colville Mining District, Alaska. Mineralization is hosted by the Kayak Shale in veins, veinlets, and breccia. Sphalerite and galena, with supergene anglesite, occur in symmetrical quartz veins and between breccia clasts. The study sample analyzed 2.11 percent Pb, 5.37 percent Zn, 0.014 percent Cu, and 1.2 oz/ton Ag. Analyses of crushed products showed that 33 percent of the sample weight, and more than 50 percent of the Pb and 65 percent of the Zn, are in the minus 850 µ m fraction. Liberated grains of sphalerite and galena were found in crushed products finer than 300 µ m. Beneficiation tests indicate the material is amenable to processing by traditional gravity and flotation techniques.

To many people, the word cartel implies illegality. However, although it is illegal in the US, cartels are an effective and legal way to conduct business elsewhere in the world. But be-fore we continue, what is a cartel? The American Heritage Dictionary defines a cartel as "a combination of independent business organizations formed to regulate production, pricing, and marketing of goods by the members." However, that definition does not fit many of the "cartels" we are examining today. The International Tin Council is an organization of both consumer and producer nations--no individual companies are represented. The buffer stock is used by the ITC to provide protection for both producers and consumers, and has only been in effect since 1955. (Earlier tin producers groups date back to 1921 when the Federated Malaysia States and the Netherlands East Indies formed the first intergovernmental tin agreement, known as the Bandoeng Pool, which only lasted three years.) The International Bauxite Association only dates back to 1974 when seven nations--Australia, the Dominican Republic, Ghana, Guinea, Guyana, Haiti and Jamaica--agreed to three main objectives: 1) to promote the orderly and rational development of the bauxite industry; 2) to secure a fair and reasonable return on the raw material for the benefit of the nations' citizens; and 3) to safeguard the interests of member countries in relation to the international bauxite industry. 1 Again this organization is composed of nations, not separate firms. This generally follows the pattern that the oil producing countries (OPEC) chose since the nations' mineral product-ion is controlled and often owned by the state. However, the group I am going to discuss fits the more classic mode of a cartel. The informal lead-zinc producers' cartel can be dated as far back as to Roman times when Romans are said to have imposed a quota system on British lead production to safeguard their Spanish lead mines. Also, the lead-zinc producers group is composed only of individual companies, not do not include any lead-zinc consumers. Finally, the activities of the group are not open to public scrutiny, and details are only now available due to a leak in the Australian government. At this point, it is necessary to split the two metals since while many of the members of the cartels produce both lead and zinc they do have different histories and marketing arrangements.
