Chemical and physical properties of typical low-rank coal (LRC) ash are significantly different than bituminous coal ash. With the exception of extraneous ash, which is incorporated during mining or is due to ash partings within or between coal seams, LRC ash consists primarily of inherent ash that is bonded into the coal's organic matrix or finely disseminated mineral matter. This paper reviews the nature of LRC ash, both inherit and extraneous, and how this impacts the prospects of washing and utilizing LRCs. A literature review, as well as washability data, proximate and ultimate analyses and ash analysis of 25 Alaskan LRC seams are used as a basis for this discussion. During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

In low-temperature diagenetic environments (0 c T c 60 - 80°C), elemental sulfur forms by six common processes: via (1) inorganic oxidation of H2S by molecular oxygen, (2) inorganic oxidation of H2S by ferric iron compounds, (3) polysulfide disproportion- ation; and via the microbial metabolic actions of (4) colorless sulfur bacteria, (5) colored sulfur bacteria, and (6) some types of thiobacilli. Economically viable deposits of native sulfur usually are formed by only one process: inorganic oxidation of H2S by molecular oxygen. The amount of elemental sulfur is also limited by three common processes that destroy it in low- temperature diagenetic environments: bacterial reduction, bacterial oxidation, and inorganic oxidation. In high-temperature diagenetic environments (80 - 10o°C c T c 150 - 200°C), particularly in sour gas reservoirs, there are seven common processes forming elemental sulfur: (1) SOdH2S reaction, (2) H2S- hydrocarbon reaction, (3) polysulfide disproportionation, (4) catalytic H2S decomposition, (5) C02-H2S reaction, (6) chlorinification, and (7) exsolution of physically dissolved elemental sulfur. Natural processes that destroy or remove elemental sulfur in such settings are hydrocarbon sulfurization, polysulfide formation, and advection. In most sour gas reservoirs, relatively small quantities of elemental sulfur occur as a free phase (solid or liquid). However, elemental sulfur often precipitates in copious amounts from the reservoir fluids via exsolution and polysulfide disproportionation during production of sour gas reservoirs. By extension, elemental sulfur may precipitate from reservoir fluids in relatively large quantities upon uplift and erosion of deep sour gas reservoirs, or from advection of sulfurous fluids into shallower settings via faults or other high-permeability pathways.

Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

Bessac's presence in Singapore started in 2014 with the construction of the Thomson metro line, which includes 18 miles of twin-bore tunnels and 22 stations split into 17 construction packages. Bessac joint venture was allotted the T219 lot. The works include the construction of a new 660-foot (200-meter) long transfer station, two parallel 19-foot (5.8 m) ID tunnels and a pedestrian underpass. The urban context and the very soft ground stratum imposed to utilize unusual tunneling techniques, from upgrading a slurry TBM to a high-density slurry TBM to launch with very low cover and canopy pipe roofing completed with a MTBM without retrieval shaft.

The method of conditional simulation is easily implemented on the personal computer when the LU decomposition algorithm of Davis (1987) is employed. This algorithm is fairly compact, yet can generate moderate-sized simulations in a few minutes on a 80286 or 80386-based personal computer. The application of conditional simulation presented here is to generate possible ore inventories from a limited amount of exploration sampling. The simulations can then he examined to decide if the potential inventories are sufficiently attractive to proceed with further exploration. An example showing one application of this approach is presented.

Characterizing exploration prospect potential has aspects that differ from those encountered during ore reserve estimation. One problem is determination of the ore reserve potential prior to acquisition of significant volumes of hard data. The evaluation is subjective and data are usually sparse and of uncertain quality. However, estimations of the ore reserve potential are commonly demanded by management before project funding will be approved. The estimations from several prospects, along with the uncertainties inherent to the estimation, are then used to compare and contrast the potential of several prospects, often with widely varying geologic models.

This paper looks at four critical lubricants used in the conveyor systems of the northern Albertan oil sand facility. The requirements for the lubricants used in the electric motors and gear boxes of the drive systems, the pulley bearing and the idler bearings are discussed in terms of the applications and the environment. A number of developments that have occurred in recent years are presented. Data from the field and from custom designed testing in the laboratory are used to support the role of simulation testing in problem solving in this area of technology.

This paper is a brief review of the lubrication requirements of enclosed gearing on earth moving equipment, particularly as they apply to intermediate and large draglines and shovels used in open pit mining operations. It discusses the requirements of spur, helical and herringbone gearing in both horizontal and vertically mounted applications. The effects of base stock, oil viscosity, additive treatment, quantity of oil and method of application are considered. In addition, a newly designed circulating oil system for enclosed swing gear cases and the reasons for its development are discussed.

The knowledge concerning the lubrication of open gearing for mining machinery has contained many unknowns and at its best has relied to a great degree on a "Rule of Thumb" procedure. It will be within the scope of this paper to explain what we have learned to date and what must be learned in the future. The results in the lubrication of open gearing have spanned the spectrum of unsatisfactory to satisfactory. With the advent of larger mining machinery, we are faced with the necessity of a more thorough knowledge of open gear lubrication. We have avail- able, better steels for the gearing, advanced technology and machinery for cutting proper tooth profiles, and better means of aligning the teeth in the gear train. This has made it possible to transmit more horsepower through the same size gear set than ever before, if we have the proper lubrication to complement the factors previously mentioned. We have set up computer programs which can calculate the data fox the tooth forms, the correct operating center distances, the contact stresses, the bending stresses, and the PVT factor of the gear teeth. This program does not, at the present, have sufficient data available to calculate the type of lubricant which should be used.

"We hear all the time about the value of hard work and perseverance, and the part they play in the professional life of successful people. What we do not hear so much about are the many professionals who work hard and persevere, yet never seem to quite reach the level of success they aim for. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"

Mining technology to utilize vital lunar resources will be required for any commitment to permanent lunar basing. Lunar mining must be viewed both as a major supporting element for space resource commercialization and for creation of human settlements on lunar and planetary surfaces to support long-range space exploration. The Apollo missions to the lunar surface and results from fundamental research on analogue lunar rocks by the Bureau of Mines, and others, have provided the initial data for developing lunar mining technology. The multi-disciplinary research projected in this paper outlines the scientific and engineering needs to realize the lunar mining goals.

I appreciate very much the invitation to speak with you and the opportunity of bringing you messages from both the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and the Assistant Secretary for Health/Acting Surgeon General of the U.S. Public Health Service. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you (the organizers of this Conference) on identifying the critical issues in the field and assembling such a broad array of experts to address them. I would like to present a brief view of the emerging framework for health that puts into perspective some of the aspirations of the Administration and to highlight several points with regard to prevention and occupational health. The goals are: 1. To improve the overall health status of our people. (This has been and will remain the National policy regarding health.); 2. To engage the Nation in the important effort of enhancing public health. (This is not reserved exclusively for the activity of the Federal Government or for State Governments. Public health has to be a cooperative effort that brings together all of the people engaged in the process of serving the people.); and 3. To pledge that health care will not be priced out of anyone's reach because of inflation. (It is clear that there are major tasks of bringing about economic recovery in our country. One aspect of this effort is to guard against the cost of health care not being allowed to rise beyond the reach of persons who need that care.) "How will these goals be achieved and what must change in the delivery of health and medical care in our society?" There are a number of real issues as well as perceptions that adversely affect the attainment of these goals: First, The cost of medical care is soaring and the public, industry unions and other elements of our society are becoming concerned. (They recognize the problem and are demanding a solution.); Second, There is a growing concern about the priorities that have been set. (For example, the evidence that preventive interventions are the most effective approach is overwhelming, yet medicine has not yet given that a high priority.); and Third, There is the perception that physicians do too much to too many people at too great a cost and that too much and too costly technologies are used. In view of the perceptions, we all must accept some changes and the challenges that needed changes will bring. A month before the new budget went to Congress, President Reagan went on nationwide television and told the American people that, "It is time to recognize that we have come to a turning point and we are threatened with an economic calamity of tremendous proportion and the [old business as usual treatment can't save us. Together we must chart a new course]." Now eight months down the road from this and a long Spring and Summer of discussion both within the Executive Branch and in the Congress, many plans and programs and concepts have emerged. The new course has been charted and the turning point has been made. Business as usual has been put aside and the Administration's leadership has been stretched and tested in putting forth a better approach with the reality that money is tight and that old habits of delivering care are difficult to change. The Congress has now given us a look at a new health budget that takes into account some of the harsh economic realities and that does make allowances for the persistence of familiar behavior. Against this background, it is now possible to begin addressing ways to provide health services to people at a price the Nation can afford to pay. There are without question difficult decisions involved but the Administration is committed to supporting and improving health care in America. It has been the President's contention that one of the principal causes of the inflationary spiral in the country was the steady and indefensible growth of the Federal budget. The problem stems from the fact that we have been living well, but beyond our means for nearly 30 years. Now we are discovering that there is a bottom to the barrel after all. It is possible for our society to run out of things like energy (oil), water or money. The health bills must be paid -- by Government, by insurance, by parents or by someone. INTRODUCTION At the end of 1959, high levels of radioactivity attributed to radon and its daughter products were discovered in the fluorspar mines at St. Lawrence, Newfoundland. These levels were presumed to be the cause of an unusually high incidence of lung cancer among the fluorspar miners (deVilliers & Windish, 1964) (Parsons et al. 1964). The mining of fluorspar (calcium fluoride) began in 1933 as open pit operations but converted to standard underground mining procedures in 1936. During the second world war, production was greatly expanded as a result of increased demand for fluorspar used in the production of steel. Wet drilling was first introduced into general use in 1942. Ventilation was mainly by natural draft occasionally supplemented by small blowers. The amount of ventilation varied greatly between mines as well as over time. For example, one large mine, the Iron Springs mine, had only a single small raise to the surface some 600' from the central shaft. Other mines, such as the Director mine, had a number of raises to the surface and, as a result, had far better ventilation. Mines also varied by the amount of ground-water which seeped into them. In the early 1950's, an unusually large number of lung cancer cases were diagnosed among the fluorspar miners. As a result, in 1956 and 1957, J.P. Windish of Canada's Department of Health and Welfare tested for possible causative agents in the mines. Unfortunately, radon measurements were not conducted until 1959 and 1960 when Windish tested Director mine as did the A.D. Little company in 1960. As a result of the high radon levels found, mechanical ventilation was introduced and the concentration of radon dauthers fell, on the average to well below 1 WL. During this period, lung cancer cases continued to be diagnosed with 29 lung cancer deaths recorded by 1964 and 71 by 1971. As of July 1981, 105 lung cancer cases had been identified (Hollywood, 1981). Previous reports concerning the fluorspar miners have dealt in detail with the factors in the occupational environment and discussed occupational mortality patterns. The purpose of this paper is to review further the mortality experience with particular reference to lung cancer in relation to cumulated radiation exposure and to describe briefly our ongoing study of this group. METHODS Occupational histories were prepared for men who had been employed by the mining companies at St. Lawrence during the period 1933 to 1977. The histories were compiled from company records except for the period 1933 to 1936, records for which were lost in a fire; however, the occupational histories for this period were completed by searching census records and interviewing company officials, ex-employees and others. In addition, occupational and smoking histories were also obtained for some miners during a survey conducted in 1978. Occupational records included name and date of birth as well as the type, place and hours of work by year. For each year prior to 1960, hours of work were converted to working months (1 WM = 167 hours) and were multiplied by the estimated average radon daughter concentration in working levels (WL) to yield the annual radiation exposure in working level months (WLM). Pre-1960 radiation levels were estimated on the basis of the history of mining methods employed, ventilation history of the mine, type and place of work and conditions under which the first radiation measurements were made in 1959 and 1960 (deVilliers and Windish, 1964). During the period from 1960 to 1967, the average exposure was about 0.5 WL. Beginning in 1968, radiation levels were measured more frequently, and, beginning in 1969, daily exposures for each worker were recorded based on radiation levels in the place worked on a given day. Mortality data were obtained from medical certificates of death. In a small number of cases, medically certified death certificates were unavailable. In these cases, probable cause of death were obtained from forms completed by the local clergyman (returns of death), parish records, information obtained from interviews with family members of the deceased and/or hospital information, before assigning a cause of death. Data obtained from these sources were found in Tables 1, 2 and 4, cover the time period 1933 to 1971. Data in Table 3 as well as in Figures 1 through 3 cover deaths from 1933 to 1977, and includes only those miners for whom medical certificates of death were available. Two medically certified causes of death were changed from other causes to lung cancer on the basis of pathology reports.

The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

Lyon with half a million inhabitants is the third largest city in France. Urban agglomerations such as Greater Lyon demand intelligent underground solutions for the freedom of mobility of its inhabitants. The city and metropolitan area of Lyon provide an example of a city strategy adapted to the changing needs due to demographic and living standard trends. The Lyon Metro Line B with a length of 2.4 km is one of the strategic projects with regard to city planning and future mobility. The paper will highlight on this special area of application in singular diverse geology with sophisticated mechanized tunnelling technology.

In January 2001, French and Italian governments signed an agreement for the construction of a new Lyon-Turin railway line. This project includes a tunnel of 53.1 km length and a maximum of 2500 m overburden to be designed for a reference speed of220 km/h. The tunnel crosses major part of the West Alpine geological formations, which are very complex and contrasted in terms of the nature of rocks and the mechanical and hydrogeological conditions. In addition to the twin single-track tubes, numerous intermediary shafts, security station and intervention sites and cross passages should be built to respond to the security, operational and construction requirements. This paper describes the results of the preliminary engineering design and multiple challenges of this very long and deep railway tunnel.

Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). ?We are certain there is need for research in every phase of mining." This statement by R. M. Crump of the Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (047) paraphrases opinion widespread among mining people. It is undoubtedly true. In preparation for this presentation, 193 organizations were asked to describe their mining research efforts. 60% responded, The meaning of "research" was taken in several different ways. The continual efforts of progressive companies to improve themselves were reported as research. We will call this and any effort to solve specific and immediate problems "practical research". The continuing investigation of subjects of long range interest will be called "basic research".
