If it had not been for the almost unbelievable adventures that came before and after, the last ten months of 19 15 would have been exciting enough for anyone. As it was they were a cheerful interlude. I spent most of the time on our Warren operations catching up on a lot of underground work and visiting Ajo every few weeks to see if my Chuquicamata visit might help solve the New Cornelia problem. While the difficulties were finally solved, at times they seemed almost hopeless. About all I could do to help was to make sure that the ore sent to the pilot plants represented the average ore that must be treated in the final 5000 tpd mill. Dr. Ricketts and John Greenway worked tirelessly with the best consulting advice they could obtain. Credit for the final success was due chiefly to their efforts. Since our old group had given up its "Merry Widow" home in Warren, a few of us got rooms in the company-built Cole Building over the Warren grocery store. This included Jim Lewis, Roy Mitchell, Steve Landon, Paul Stevens, and Hubert d'Autremont who came from Duluth to join our legal staff. Later we rented a small house two blocks from the Calumet and Arizona office. With the now flourishing country club only a 10-min walk away, and an electric car running to it every half hour or so, we were able to give parties in return for the hospitality of our friends. One of the most pleasant episodes came by luck a few days after I got back from Chile. Chester Congdon, a leading director in Calumet and Arizona, with his wife and their daughters, Elizabeth and Helen, spent a couple of days at the Greenway house before making an auto- mobile trip across the desert from Tucson to Ajo. At the same time I arranged to examine the small but rich Bush and Baxter copper mine a few miles from Tucson. The paper is divided into two parts. The first part describes an investigation of the effect of temperature on the conditioning and flotation of an ilmenite ore with a 1:l oleic acid-fuel oil mixture as collector. During conditioning the pulp underwent characteristic changes of flocculation, deflocculation and dispersion which were monitored by measuring the power consumption of the conditioner motor. Optimum flotation results were obtained at the end of the deflocculation period. High ilmenite recoveries were obtained at high temperatures and high concentrate grades at low temperatures. The second part of the paper describes a study of the effect of temperature on the adsorption of oleic acid at the ilmenite/water interface. At high adsorption densities it was chemical and exothermic. Contact angles showed that the hydrophobicity of the collector-coated minerals increased with an increase in temperature.

A general model which represents not only batch but also continuous flotation in multi-cell machines is presented. This model considers both the size distribution and the distribution of flotabilities in a size class for valuable mineral particles in the pulp. The general expression is shown to reduce to several previously reported models. In addition, a number of new models are found to arise for different specific assumptions concerning the flotability distribution and/or the size distribution of the particles undergoing flotation. Several of these new models are tested experimentally using laboratory-scale batch and pilot-scale continuous data. Model parameters are estimated from this data and a comparison of calculated recoveries and those experimentally determined are presented. Finally, the influence of the feed rate, aeration rate and valuable mineral content of the feed on the recovery is examined.

Since 1970 a new series of pneumo-mechanical flotation machines has been developed by Outokumpu Oy. The cells have a completely new type of mechanism based on a recently-developed theory of conditions necessary for dispersion of large amounts of air. The mechanism was developed in 3 cu m cells and scaled to 16 cu m cells. Rotor and stator description, scale-up theory, and practical experience with the 16 cu m cell are presented.

Drilling of small diameter blast holes in the conventional tunnel driving system or mining operation still consumes a significant part of the time and money required to extend an opening in rock. The use of pneumatic drills for most small hole applications has been the dominant tool used by miners and tunnel men alike throughout the world. But now, a, trend has been started that is showing major inroads into the traditional areas of pneumatics drilling for all types of rocks. Operators dealing in very soft materials, such as coal, salt or potash, traditionally had the option to use hydraulic power for their drilling tools. Twelve to fifteen years ago, drillers in medium hard, but nonabrasive rock extended their drill machine option by helping to develop a drill that still used air to power the hammers, but relied on hydraulic power for the rotational torque and feed thrust. (1) This was a significant step forward, particularly for those who drilled in rocks that were compatible to rotary-percussion bits. However, this application was in fact somewhat limited to the limestone and dolomite formation of mid-United States and the softer sediments in Europe. Now high performance rock drills have been developed, using all-hydraulics for both the hammer and rotation, that have many advantages over the conventional pneumatic systems. In two previous papers on this subject, (2)(3) this author reviewed in detail: 1) the characteristics of each of the manufacturer's products that were on the market; 2) The specific advantages of the all-hydraulic drilling systems; 3) Data from the applications of these drilling systems that was in use; 4) What was needed to further develop this drilling system and utilize its potential in the mining or tunnelling cycle. When Dick Robbins asked me to give a keynote address, I felt it might be in order to review some of the practices and techniques used in tunneling and work up to some of the concepts now used to mine and construct tunnels. Needless to say, there have been many changes in tunneling technology and also many changes in the Safety Codes controling them. An example of this latter change was the fact that in 1931, my father excavated the Owyhee Tunnel No.5 with gas locomotives. He was able to do it because there was no natural gas in the rock and the ventilation system was designed to free the tunnel atmosphere from powder and exhaust fumes. Today OSHA rules would never permit gas locomotives underground, although there were no incidents on this particular project. One of my first tunnels, as Project Manager, was the Clear Creek Tunnel for the Bureau of Reclamation. Our method of handling muck was the Conway Muckers. This unit was a valuable improvement to the hand mucking of previous generations. The Conway was also used in our Navajo Project, in New Mexico. Unlike the Clear Creek project, where water was one of our main problems - up to 7,200 gallons per minute, at a pressure of 395 pounds per square inch - in the Navajo Tunnel, we had a mixed face which caused a major problem with our support system. In one of the Navajo Tunnels, there was a major cave-in, when the squeezing shale came in during an attempt to strengthen the support system. Although moving shale was not a constant problem, there were areas where the shale was five to six feet above the spring line.

The largest structure along the Tauern highway section between Salzburg and Villach is the 6.4-km-long Tauern Tunnel. The major geotechnical problems that came up surprisingly while driving the headings of that tunnel and their successful solution form the content of this article. A detailed discussion is presented of the special construction methods developed by systematic application of the principles of the New Austrian Tunneling Method with which even very heavily squeezing ground with large excavation areas can be mastered reliably and economically.

Salicylaldehyde, a chelating agent for tin, has been found to function as a collector for the flotation of cassiterite. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance studies clearly show that salicylaldehyde can form a chelate compound in bulk and at the surface. Results are also given for the flotation of a tin ore with this reagent.

Kennecott Copper Corporation's Chino Mines Division concentrator is located in Hurley, New Mexico. Construction of the concentrator was started in 1910 and its capacity was progressively increased over the years to the present nominal 20, 425 t/d of ore (22, 500 stpd). The principal copper minerals present in the ore are chalcopyrite and chalcocite with much of the chalcotite intimately associated with pyrite. Lime is used to depress pyrite, and flotation at a high pH or alkalinity is required for optimum recovery of chalcocite with good rejection of the pyrite. Regrinding is also required to liberate chalcocite-pyrite middling grains. Accurate control of the lime addition is necessary to obtain both optimum metallurgy and minimum lime usage. At low pH levels, flotation cell control is difficult due to excess froth, but excessively high pH levels can go unnoticed because froth characteristics do not change from those experienced at the deisred pH. With manual control of the lime addition, the desired pH can be exceeded for periods of up to two hours. In 1972 a major renovation of the flotation and regrinding circuits was com¬pleted and at that time a new lime distribution and control system was placed in operation. Limestone is obtained from a nearby quarry west of Hurley. The limestone is crushed, sized and fed to a rotary kiln and the quicklime product is stored prior to slaking. The lime is slaked, as required, in a mixing tank-classifier type slaker and the lime slurry is pumped to a concentrator storage tank from which it is distributed through a conventional closed loop system. The current average lime usage rate is approximately 6 kg/t of ore (12 lb per st).

Early in 1971 the Peabody Design and Preparation group began engineering on a preparation plant which was to process eight mil- lion tons per year of raw coal. For the first five or six years this product was to be furnished 50% from surface mining operations and roughly 50% from underground operations. By early 1980, 1008 of the production was to come from underground mines. Because of the large annual commitment from Randolph Preparation Plant, it was essential that the plant operate with minimum down-time. As usual, capital costs were to be kept at a minimum. Before we discuss the details of design, it would be best to discuss the overall picture. Underground production to be pro- cessed through Randolph Preparation Plant was to be delivered by means of one mile overland conveyor from Baldwin #1 Underground Mine to the plant. Surface Mine production was to be delivered by means of 100-ton haulage units dumping in a 1,000-ton capacity hopper. Because of the changing production rates in both the underground and surface mines as well as the great difference in size consist, it was decided that it would be necessary to divorce the plant as much as possible from production. For this reason, twin 6,500-ton raw coal silos were constructed to separate the two coals as well as allow blending. The preparation plant itself, was to be designed to Operate two shifts per day, five days per week, at an average rate Of 2,200 tons per hour with a maximum rate of 2600 to 2800 tons per hour. Coal was to be delivered to our customers by means of rail haulage at both unit train rates and plant process rates. The surface mined coal, after discharging into the 1,000-ton R.O.M. hopper, is fed by means of two 72" wide reciprocating feeders onto a 72" wide steel cable belt. The steel cabled conveyor discharges the R.O.M. coal onto a fixed grizzly, scalping out a percent of the 6 x 0 coal. The balance is fed to a 12' x 27' Rotary Breaker. The material passing through 6" round hole screens is added to the 6" x 0" from the scalping screen. The 6" x 0" is conveyed to the top of one of the 6500 ton silos designated for surface coal. Material that is not broken to pass the 6" breaker screen is discharged to a bin and disposed of with plant refuse.

Manufacture and mixing of flotation reagents at the mill site provides an economic and convenient method of maintaining a continuous and fresh supply of reagents for concentrator operations. Kennecott Copper Corporation has designed and built a Reagent Mixing Facility which incorporates new ideas in construction and fail-safe operation at its Nevada Mines Division concentrator. Highly sophisticated automation and instrumentation techniques are combined with safety procedures and equipment that meet and exceed all Federal and State safety requirements. Installation of the facility has minimized hazardous working conditions for the operator, isolated reagent preparation from production personnel and equipment, and reduced the time required for reagent preparation from three shifts to one shift per day.

It was estimated in Chemical Week1 that the uranium fuel requirements for the U.S. Electric Utility Industry by the mid 1980's would be about four times that-of what it is today. This corresponds to approximately 45,000 tons per year of 'yellow cake' - of which a good portion is represented by ammonium diuranate - vs. the 11,700 ton total estimated for 1975. Perhaps just as significant is the 40-fold increase in thirty years projected for the entire world since 1970. Thus by the year 2000. 'yellow cake' production could be in the order of [3]50.000 short tons annually.2 'Yellow cake', so named because of its inherently bright yellow color, is a finely divided precipitate that can be formed after the leaching step when refining uranium ores. Feed solids enhancement then occurs to at least 50% by weight using filters or centrifuges This is followed normally by drying and then calcining with the conversion of ammonium diuranate to triuranium octoxide represented by the following equation: [9 (NH4)2 U2 07 heat 14 NH3 7 + 15 H2O7 + 2N2/ + 6 U308 4] Theoretically, assuming 100% conversion every 100 kgs. or 100 lbs. of ammonium diuranate will result in 90 kgs. or 90 lbs. of triuranium octoxide.

The use of the walking dragline as a stripping tool has increased dramatically in the past two decades. The reasons for its increased popularity and some historical background on its introduction into the mines are given in a recent paper by Learmont. (l)* The history need not be recounted here except to show the trend to longer booms which has accompanied the growth in machine size. Figure 1 shows the change in maximum operating radius on Bucyrus-Erie machines which has occurred over the years and Figure 2 shows the corresponding change in maximum boom lengths. Reference 1 also presents some of the reasons for expecting this trend to longer booms to continue. There are many design parameters affected by the increase in boom lengths; swing power, hoist and drag rope lengths, and drum capacity, to list just a few. The purpose of this paper is to discuss only the structural implications of using longer booms. As in the design of any structure, the various facets of boom design are interrelated and a process of optimization between them must be worked out either by evolution or by conscious iterative effort. The decisions we have reached about such things as material selection, structural arrangement, and applicable criteria, have not come into being overnight but represent instead many years of design experience and a fair amount of recent concentrated analytical effort. In the following pages an attempt will be made to first, state those decisions, second, explain how we arrived at that particular result; and third, describe what we expect future developments to be which might influence us to change those decisions.

The day after I reached New York, on January 30th, John Ryan of Anaconda told me where they wanted me to go. Late in 1916 the Russian Czar, desperate for money and supplies with which to carry on his unhappy share In the first World War, sent emissaries to the United States to see if our great mining companies might be interested in trying to find mines and to bring them to production in the millions of acres of the Imperial Estates in Russia and Siberia. It looked like a long chance as no one knew whether or where there might be important ore bodies. Even if they found them it might be a hopeless task to equip them under wartime conditions But the American copper companies had plenty of money and they were used to taking risks. They made a supersecret agreement with the Czar's deputies to send an exploring expedition to Russia at once I never learned the names of the other companies but Anaconda was to man- age the venture. Horace Winchell, then the leading mine geologist In the United States, was to be in charge of operations. Charles Janin, an eminent placer and dredge expert, was to study chances for producing gold and platinum. Though at 33 years of age I was much younger than the others, I was chosen to hunt for copper and other valuable metals. Charles Boynton, a business man who had lived in Russia and had married an attractive Russian woman, was to join the party and carry on any necessary financial or diplomatic affairs. He had gone on ahead to arrange for our reception Finally a graduate student from Ann Arbor named Steinberg was to go along as Interpreter. We soon found out that if his Russian was no better than his English his interpretlng couldn't be trusted too much I knew nothing about the millions of square miles In Russia and Siberia, and even less about what mineral deposits might be found, but I was delighted at the prospect. INTRODUCTION Mica Dam is located on the Columbia River just downstream of the "big bend" of the Columbia, where it leaves the Rocky Mountain Trench and begins to flow southwards, approximately 85 miles north of Revelstoke, B.C. (Fig.l). The dam was built as one of three Columbia River Treaty dams in British Columbia which regulate the flow of the river and provide flood control downstream in Washington and Oregon. In addition, the three Canadian dams make possible greatly increased power generation at existing power plants in the United States and further development along the Columbia and its tributaries in British Columbia. History Mica Dam, constructed during the period 1967 to 1973, is a zoned earthfill embankment 650 feet high, which has 12,000,000 acre feet of live storage and an available head of 550 feet. Power intakes which would serve either a six-unit surface or underground plant were incorporated into the design and construction of the right abutment of the dam (Fig. 2). Prior to 1971 alternative 2500 MW capacity surface and underground powerplant arrangements were studied. Cost estimates for the two alternatives were the same within the limits of estimating procedures. However, it was believed there was a certain continuing risk in locating a surface plant at the toe of a steep canyon wall. DR iron') is a generic term for metallized product that results from the direct or solid state reduction of iron ore. In direct reduction, iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the solid state without an intermediate melting step. MIDREX ® Iron is the DR iron material produced in the MIDREX ® Direct Reduction Process. Except for some thermal and mechanical degradation, the external physical form of as-reduced DR iron is the same as the feed material. Chemically, oxygen associated with iron is removed leaving a very porous structure. Figure 1 is the scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal surface of a MIDREX Iron pellet obtained from a Swedish oxide pellet during reduction at 760 °C. Figure 2 is the SEM of a polished and etched cross-section through the same pellet showing the amount of intraparticle porosity. As a result of this high porosity, apparent density of DR iron is relatively low, typically a¬round 2 g/cm3, and specific surface is extremely high, typically around 1.0 m2/g or more. Both density and specific surface depend on the raw materi¬al and the operating conditions of the direct reduction plant. Normally, more than 97% of the available iron is reduced into metallic iron with the rest mainly in the form of wustite (FeO). During direct reduction, the gangue in the iron remains essentially unchanged. Removal of oxygen and the corre¬sponding reduction in weight result in a slightly higher percentage gangue in the product than in the raw material.

Mineral policy in Canada has been in a state of transition and change over the past several years. 1976 has witnessed some settling of troubled waters and the pattern of the currents of change is becoming more clear. The provinces play a key role in this process and have provided much of the thrust for new initiatives. On the other hand, the federal government in Canada in recent years has taken a much more active interest in mineral affairs than previously and has asserted its powers on a number of key policy questions. Some of the initiatives from the two levels of government in Canada have come into conflict with each other and, thus, contributed materially to a state of affairs that includes change, uncertainty and conflict.

Current mineral industry trends toward handling the high tonnages of lower grade ore and tailings retreat lead to a continuing need for large volume flotation cells. The benefits which accompany the larger cell flotation circuit include reduced capital cost, less mill floor space, reduced operational complexity, and less maintenance, provided the metallurgical performance and solids suspension capability of the cell are not compromised. This study reviews development considerations pertinent to large mechanical air induction type flotation cells from the standpoint of cell internal hydrodynamic characteristics and metallurgical performance. While the importance of process related factors such as chemical usage, pH control, solids size and loading, and circuit arrangement cannot be denied, this study will emphasize the relationship of cell size (volume), mechanism geometry (impeller diameter), and mechanism operating conditions (rotor speed and submergence), to air transfer, liquid circulation, liquid "rise velocity" and mechanism power draw. Specific hydraulic performance maps for large capacity 300 and 500 cu ft flotation cells will be reviewed in terms of the relationship between the operational variables and the air and liquid flow conditions within the cell. Metallurgical results, obtained under plant operating conditions for 300 and 500 cu ft cells, are included to illustrate the metallurgical performance similarity of flotation cells which follow hydrodynamic scale-up criteria set forth in this investigation.

Up to the middle of 19 14, when I had reached what seemed like the advanced age of 30, I had enjoyed far more than my share of success and a lot of minor adventure. But the exciting experiences in distant lands that Soldiers of Fortune had made me long for had not yet materialized. And I had not accomplished the two goals that Mrs. Hughes' geography class at Belmont had set up for me. They were to see In its tropical home the enormous yellow bill of the toucan bird and to ride on a straw "bolsa" on Lake Titicaca. These aims were gratified In the next five years that were the epitome of "romance" in its German connotation of facts seen through the rosy glasses of imagination. Dr. Louis Ricketts was to a large extent responsible for my opportunity. I had been lucky enough to do a lot of work for and with the Doctor, as he was affectionately called by the mining men of the southwest. My association was in connection with his work with John Greenway on the complex metallurgical problems at Ajo. Soon after the Ajo investigation Ricketts had been made chief consultant for the Anaconda Copper Co. When Anaconda decided to undertake a cam- paign of exploration of the west coast of South America Dr. Ricketts thought of me and arranged with Greenway to give me a leave of absence from my Calumet and Arizona job. It took three days in New York in June 1914 to arrange the expedition. Ben Thayer, executive vice president of Anaconda, did most of the planning and I was to report to him. T.H. France, a 45-year-old mining engineer who had been driven out of Mexico by the Madera Revolution, was to accompany and help me. He spoke excellent Spanish and his years of Mexican experience had taught him how to get along with Latin Americans. He went ahead to Bolivia, our first target, to get an idea of the country and the problems. This was lucky as I hardly knew where Bolivia was.
