7.1-STABILITY OF SLOPES IN SOIL AND ROCK ROBERT H. MERRILL 7.1.1-DESIGN ANALYSIS APPROACHES The analyses of slopes in soil or rock can be made through application of soil- or rock-mechanics principles. In most cases, the material in the slope wall can easily be identified as either a soil or a rock. However, there will be instances where, because of unique characteristics, the soil may behave as a rock structure, or vice versa. By necessity, these unique cases must be identified through experience or critical observation by the engineer, because there are no definitive rules clearly establishing the differences. The most important step in a solution to a slope problem is to define it. Normally, once the problem is identified, a solution usually can be found or a reasonable estimate obtained. The design analysis of a slope wall implies an evaluation of the stresses or forces in the wall, and of the ability of the material in the wall to withstand them. Therefore, the factors influencing a design analysis can be divided into two categories: those which influence stresses, and those which influence the ability of the wall to withstand stress. For simplification, the latter is termed the strength of the soil or rock. Perhaps the basic difference between analyses for soils and those for rock is in the identification of the failure surface. Soils generally do not have an identifiable failure plane. However, some soil layers in a slope wall may have different strengths. A soil slope wall may consist of a thin layer of topsoil overlying a thick, uniform clay, or a topsoil over a gravel or other materials. Therefore, the soil generally does not have a potential plane of weakness that can be identified through observation. On the other hand, rocks normally contain planes of weakness in the form of fractures, faults, joints, bedding planes or other discontinuities weaker than the intact rock, which can be found through observation and/or tests upon rock samples. If the failure surface cannot be identified, the principles of soil mechanics should apply because, in soil mechanics, the failure surface usually is assumed. If it can be identified, then the principles of rock mechanics should apply. 7.1.2-ANALYSES OF STRESSES OR FORCES IN SLOPES All existing methods of soil-slope analysis are based upon interpetations of the Coulomb and Coulomb-Navier failure criteria, commonly termed the total-stress 2nd the effective-stress criteria (Sec. 6.1). Salt cavities have been proven to be a suitable structure for underground storage of various matters in gas, liquid or solid form. Since the technique of underground storage was developed mainly through field experiences in solution mining, a wider use of solution cavities for storage of gaseous and solid matters requires evaluation of three basic rock mechanics problems; cavity instability, boundary rock failure and surface subsidence. Cavity instability is due to the non-linear long-term creep properties of the surrounding ground media which are sensitive to cavity pressure changes associated with the storage. The cavity boundary rock failure is caused by the loss of effective confining pressure to the boundary rock media in the process of storage of gaseous and solid matters. Surface subsidence is the final outcome of the stress envelope originated around a cavity, eventually reaching the ground surface. The rock mechanics processes of instability, failure and surface subsidence are explained by using various field examples in salt domes and bedded formations. Methods of solving the problems are discussed including stress relief, stress control and computer optimization of design.

As a result of the enactment of the Federal. Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 1, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare (HEW) has been carrying out research in the "field of coal mine health". The National Institute (formerly Bureau) for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) was designated the agency within HEW to be responsible for such research activities. One of the early programs sponsored by NIOSH was undertaken by Eastern Associated Coal Corp., with the Harvard University School of Public Health participating as a subcontractor to Eastern. This program on Coal Mine Respiratory Protective Devices, which started on June 30, 1970, had five major objectives as follows: a. to determine current status of respirator usage with respect to duration and frequency, types. and maintenance b. to determine acceptability ( and reasons therefor) of currently used units c. to determine protection factors provided by respirators worn by working miners d. to make recommendations on ways to improve existing units, or on research needed to develop new types of respiratory protective devices for coal miners e. to provide recommendations to mine management on more effective use of respiratory protective devices

Deep well disposal is a much used and abused term which is the panacea for wastewater disposal in some minds and creates near hysteria in others. It can be the answer to a difficult waste disposal problem, or if improperly employed, can create more problems than it solves. My purpose in this presentation is to focus on the value and limitations of deep well disposal as expressed by New York State's experience and policies. To he sure, I feel a place for such practices docs exist if adequate safeguards are utilized. I shall give a broad brush approach to New York's legislative, geologic and operational concerns and speak briefly on some case histories. I shall not delve deeply into the technological details since I am not an expert in mining exploration or well drilling.

23.1-SOURCE, POWER-SYSTEM ELEMENTS A. J. T HUM Basic considerations in providing power for mine production and collateral operations are: 1. Mining operations of any size normally use electric motors for driving all equipment except mobile service units. 2. The electricity for power may be purchased or self-generated, depending on the location, size and specific operating circumstances of the individual property. 3. The major elements of the power system will be the source, either an incoming transmission line from a utility in the case of purchased power or the power plant if self-generated. Energy for the power plant may be water, hydrocarbon fuels, waste heat or nuclear, which will govern the type of prime mover selected. 4. The electricity normally is generated in the form of alternating current and must be distributed to the points of usage. This usually requires a primary substation for transformation to suitable voltages and secondary substations at points of usage throughout the operations, The power is delivered from the primary to the secondary substations over transmission lines or cables, depending on distances, voltages and local conditions. 5. At the points of use, there will be starting and protective devices for each motor. In some instances, direct current will be needed and rectifiers of various types can be used to provide it. 6. The entire electrical system requires suitable switching and protective devices to prevent damage to the equipment in case of power failues or faults; also, in most cases, sufficient metering to establish the demand and amount of electrical energy consumed. 23.2-PURCHASED POWER A. J. THULI 1. Where public-utility or government-generated power is available, it usually is advantageous for the mine owner to purchase rather than generate. Purchased power generally will be cheaper and more reliable than operating a small generating plant except in some cases where waste heat is available as the source of energy and can be used to supply all or a portion of the power requirements. 2. If it is decided to purchase power, the owner usually must participate in the cost of constructing the connecting line from the closest existing utility line to his point of usage. If the connected load is less than 1,000 lip, it probably is best to let the utility provide the primary substation. For larger connected loads the owner can obtain a more favorable "primary voltage" rate if he provides the primary substation to receive the incoming power and transform it to the distributing and usage voltages. 3. The cost of purchased power usually is made up of a demand charge, deter¬mined by the maximum amount of power the customer takes during any 15-min period throughout a month, and a graduated energy charge for the kilowatt-hours consumed-that is, so much for the first block of energy based on the demand,

18.1-RAILROAD JOHN W. BRAUNS Conventional railroad haulage can be employed at both open-pit or strip and underground mines-in the latter case, largely for transfer of ore from distant openings to processing plants, or processed material to loading points or docks, using standard hopper cars for bottom unloading or gondolas for rotary dumping. The major application, however, is in surface mining for moving ore and/or waste out of the pit to a crushing plant or dump. Consequently, the following will deal largely with this phase of railroad operation, though the conclusions apply equally, for the most part, to other rail-type surface haulage. In surface mining, trains consisting of a locomotive and gondola or side-dump cars suitable for loading by power shovels are used. Gondolas are restricted to hauling ore as a rotary dumper is required. Side-dump cars are more versatile, carrying both ore and waste, but because of their additional dumping mechanism they are likely to be more expensive to maintain.' Also they weigh up to twice a flat-bottom car of the same capacity and. therefore, fewer" cars can be hauled per train. Standard-gage track is most commonly used. Track systems incorporate low-quality temporary track where moves are frequent and permanent high-quality track on main lines. Rail haulage can be used alone, or in combination with other surface haulage methods, thus permitting a selection best adapted to the peculiar requirements of each mining project. 18.1.1---GENERAL APPLICABILITY, CONTROLLING PHYSICAL CONDITIONS For handling rough rock, the shovel-train system is unexcelled.' The ideal applica¬tion is in a large, but not excessively deep, open pit mine from which the coarsely blasted ore and waste must be transported over 3 mi. If. in addition, a high production rate is to he maintained, railroad haulage probably will afford a lower cost per ton transported. Grade must he relatively gentle-usually 3% uphill and 4% downhill. The greater the differences in elevation involved, the greater are the track grade space requirements; for example, a 3 c ramp out of a pit only 300 ft deep is almost 2 mi long. Main-line track locations should he selected carefully so that the number of moves during the life of the mining operation can he kept to a minimum. This applies both to the ore haulageway and that for waste. Such moves are not only expensive, but are difficult to execute without adversely affecting production rates. The large mine affords greater opportunities for judicious location of semipermanent trackage. Figs. 18-1 and 18-2 illustrate typical track layouts. The effect of terrain in considering railroad haulage is confined chiefly to the initial cost of the installation. Grade construction in mountainous territory is ap¬preciably more expensive. However, if that expense can be borne, the subsequent maintenance cost of trackage will not he much higher than in areas of low relief.

10.1-SHAFT SINKING AND RAISING BY CONVENTIONAL METHODS VICTOR L. STEVEN 10.1.1-SHAFT SELECTION A great deal of thought and planning should go into the selection of a mine shaft to provide the most effective use over the greatest, period of time. It sometimes is better to make an additional capital expenditure in the initial shaft program to achieve the greatest overall shaft usage. It is possible to sink a shaft which could be used for mine development, and initial production and later convert it to a ventilation, service or escape shaft. It is important to consider a second shaft in the original planning to provide ventilation, an escapeway and services for overall efficient production and safety. A second shaft usually is required to comply with state and federal mining laws. The main items to consider in shaft selection are: 1. Installation from surface or underground. 2. Vertical or inclined (sec Sec. 10.1.4L for discussion of factors involved in choice). 3. Tonnage to be hoisted. 4. Size of mining equipment to be lowered through the shaft to the underground workings. 5. Amount of water to be handled in the mining operation. 6. Ventilation requirements. 7. Type of ground the shaft is to be sunk through. 8. Position of shaft with relation to ore body. After the main features of a shaft arc determined, such as vertical or inclined, shape, size, type of lining and support, compartments, and shaft. facilities (air, water, ventilation, pump lines, power cahles, etc.), then :I sinking plant and procedures should be planned. At this point it should be decided whether the company will sink the shaft with its own crews or award the job to a competent shaft contractor. Company sinking generally will cost less if competent shaft men are available. Money also will be saved in plant costs, such as for hoist, headframe, compressed air, buildings, etc., as these will be part of the permanent plant and can be used in the sinking operation. Labor costs generally will be lower than contractor construction rates. The advantage of having a contract, or is the speed of completion of the project. Contractors usually have headframes and hoists ready to move on the job immediately and have trained crews ready to complete the project in the shortest possible time. Next, the type of surface sinking plant (hoist, headframe, etc.) should be selected and a determination made whether it is to be temporary or permanent. In most cases it is less expensive to install the permanent, headframe and hoist, and use them for sinking. The type of actual sinking equipment to be used should be evaluated for the most efficient sinking cycle, e.g., mucking method, drilling method, and lining or support means. The proper cycling of drilling, mucking and lining is extremely important in obtaining the most favourable sinking costs. 10.1.2 - GROUND STABILIZATION AND WATER CONTROL Prior to the shaft-sinking operation an investigation should be made into ground-water conditions. The effects of air quality regulations passed in the last few years have been felt in a more pervasive way by the electric utility industry than by perhaps any other industry. I'm referring especially to those regulations dealing with the control of air emissions from stationary sources, and those specifying the quality of fuel used. Particularly, I would like to describe some of the effects that these regulations have had on the Commonwealth Edison Company. To put the subject into perspective, a brief descrip¬tion of the company will be presented first. Then, a historical outline of some of the efforts at control of electric generating station emissions will be described. Following this will be an indication of the Company's response to early State and local regulations prompted by the growing pressure for stringent envi¬ronmental control. Finally, the Company's plans to achieve com¬pliance with the most recent, Federally approved, State of Illinois regulations will be summarized.

The large massive sulphide deposits present a formidable challenge to the economic geologist. They represent such huge concentrations of iron, sulphur, base metals and precious metals that it is difficult to conceive how they were derived from the crust or mantle of the Earth. The problem of the origin of massive sulphide deposits has generated a geological controversy which has lasted two hundred years and shows no sign of abating. The economic incentive to solve this problem is great, as the massive sulphide bodies are the moat important source of the world's zinc, lead, and silver, as well as yielding large amounts of copper and gold. Using the criteria of abundance, size, age distribution and gross value of contained metals, the predominant sub-group of the massive sulphide deposits is that which comprises the crudely conformable pyritic (or pyrrhotitic) deposits which occur in stratified volcanic and sedimentary rocks or their metamorphosed equivalents. Examples of this sub-group are: the Buchans, Bathurst, Noranda, Kidd Creek, Flin Plon and Sullivan deposits of Canada; the Mt. Isa and Broken Hill orebodies of Australia; the Cyprus, Rio Tinto, Meggen and Rammelsberg deposits of Europe; Ducktown and the United Verde in United States; and the Kuroko deposits of Japan.

The most abundant fuel resource in the U.S.A. is also the most under-utilized. Proven reserves of bituminous coal, sub-bituminous and lignite constitute from 60% to 90% of our total fossil fuel reserves -- dependent upon the parameters used by the analyst making the estimate. Despite this ample supply, bituminous coal provided only 20% of U. S. energy consumption in 1967 and 1968, this dropping to 17.57 in 1971 and 1972. By 1978, according to my projections, 16.7% of the Nation's mechanical energy will come from bituminous coal. However, our energy needs are growing at such a rate that the 20.6% provided by bituminous in 1967 equalled 480 million tons while the 16.7% of U. S. consumption visualized for 1978 will require nearly 650 million tons. In order to view coal's position with perspective in this developing energy crunch, it is necessary to examine the total energy situation. To this end, I have prepared a couple of tables which you should have before you. I chose this procedure rather than slides because I would need to utilize an entire wall to make the data visible to an audience. Therefore, I refer you to the long sheet entitled "U. S. Energy Consumption - Trillion Btu - 1967-1978." As you can see from the heading, I am confining my treatment of the problem to the intermediate term. In the long run, if we are willing to pay the cost, we can do a lot of things, including the complete conversion of coal into a sulfur-free fuel.

The New Lead Belt of Missouri, situated in the heart of the Clark National Forest, stands as a dynamic example of how mining activities can successfully coexist in a restricted wilderness area. After 16 years of intensive drilling activity, mine development and surface plant construction, many would agree that the mine-plant design philosophy of St. Joe has minimized the imbalancing effects to the ecology and the wilderness appearance of the Ozark area. In a recent dedication speech of St. Joe's newest operation, it was stated: 1 "this Brushy Creek Mine, as well as nearly all of the mines in this district, lies within the boundaries of the Clark National Forest. Here the Forest Service has an outstanding and realistic program for multi-use of Federal lands. Mining, lumbering, recreation and conservation coexist in, what I consider, a delightful wilderness environment. I believe that this same type of usage could be permitted on all government land without seriously detracting from its natural beauty." Each and every activity in the process of discovery, exploration, development and finally operating a mine and process mill could have drastically degraded some phase of nature's environment were it not for the well developed and executed plans of the mining people involved. This is not to say that everything has been kept in perfect balance; but most certainly the industrial impact on what was once a wilderness area has been held to a minimum. What follows is the story of how each phase of this gigantic development was handed by industry people. Through their interaction and cooperation with government agencies, educators and researchers, allowed not only the ecology of the area to be protected, but the aesthetic beauty of the Ozarks to remain intact.

Gentlemen, today I would like to talk to you about metal and nonmetal mine health and safety--past, present and future. Briefly, I will comment on the past because it is important to an understanding of our present activity and our plans for the future. Federal inspection of noncoal mines was not authorized until 1966, when congress passed the federal metal and nonmetal mine health and safety act; public law 89-577, with the passage of this act, the federal inspector, for the first time, had the delegated authority and responsibility to enforce health and safety regulations designed to prevent personal injuries and occupational diseases, the new law also provided for the education and training of our miners; assistance to the operator through the transmission of technical and scientific information and assistance and equally important, the law made provision for state participation in the congressional mandate to prevent injuries and save lives in the mineral industry, Before I tell you about our program and our future plans, I want you to know that I am here to listen as well as to talk! In my view, the only kind of communication that is meaningful is two-way communication. Our nationwide progress in metal and nonmetal mine health and safety during 1972 cannot be measured in reduced fatalities or injuries. The unforeseen tragedy that took pace in Kellogg, Idaho, in may of last year mode that almost a certainty.

6.1-SOIL MECHANICS WALTER C. SHERMAN, JR. 6.1.1-DEFINITION Soil mechanics is concerned with the behavior of soils in relation to the design, construction and performance of engineering works. In this context, soils include all uncemented materials, such as, gravels, sands, silts and clays, either naturally or artificially deposited, and, under certain conditions, weakly cemented, badly broken or weathered rocks. Many types of mine wastes have physical properties similar to those of soils and thus are amenable to analysis by the principles of soil mechanics. The principles of soil mechanics are used to solve such problems as the stability of various types of structures with respect to failure of the supporting soils, determination of soil pressures and deformations in the design of foundations and retaining structures, analyses of seepage and under seepage, and stability with respect to sliding of excavated and natural slopes and embankments. 6.1.2--SOIL PROPERTIES Soils are classified on the basis of index properties, such as, particle-size distribution and plasticity characteristics. The Unified Soil Classification System1 used to classify soils for engineering purposes is shown in Table 6-1. Other physical properties important from an engineering standpoint include natural water content, density, permeability, shear strength and compressibility. Physical properties are evaluated on the basis of carefully conducted laboratory tests. Procedures for laboratory testing are presented by Lambe. 2 Soils, either of natural or artificial deposition, are complex three-phase materials consisting of solids, water and gas (usually air or water vapor). One of the most important principles in soil mechanics is based on the concept of effective stress in the soil-water system. A stress, a, applied to a saturated soil is taken partly by the soil particles (effective stress, a'), and partly by the water in the voids (neutral stress or pore water pressure, u,) so that a' = a - u,. Only the effective stress affects the mobilization of frictional resistance between soil particles. In partially saturated soils, the pore-water pressure is negative due to capillary effects. The effective stress relation remains valid for small negative pore pressures, but anomolies arise if the soil is significantly unsaturated. In this case, the pore pressure is commonly assumed as equal to the pore air pressure, u,, so that [ u' = u - u..] 6.1.3--SOIL EXPLORATIONS Soil explorations are carried out by borings or test pits. Hvorslev3 has reviewed procedures and boring requirements, such as, type, depth and spacing employed. In general, soil strata are logged and representative exploratory samples are recovered for classification purposes and for determining the subsurface soil profile, which is constructed utilizing also knowledge of the geology of a site. 11.1-FRAGMENTATION PRINCIPLES WARREN W. KRECH Energy must be supplied to rock by direct or indirect means to fragment that rock. The amount is dependent upon the properties of the rock and the type of loading system. Fragmentation energy is consumed by three main mechanisms: (1) creation of new surface area (fracture energy), (2) friction (plasticity) and (3) elastic wave energy dispersion. The loading method determines the relative proportions and the amount of energy consumed in fragmenting a given rock type. Unconfined tensile failure consumes the least energy, with an increasing amount of energy required as the rock is more highly confined within a compressive stress field during fragmentation. The way energy is applied by tools to cause rock or mineral fragmentation is important in determining fragmentation efficiency. Rock-tool interaction should always be controlled to the fullest extent possible to optimize the combination of rate of energy input and fragmentation energy requirements. While the direct cost of energy, (dollars per horsepower-hour) may at first glance appear low relative to other hourly costs, there is a tie between power consumption and other cost factors, such as maintenance and wear. A high rate of energy application utilizing a rock-tool interaction producing only unconfined tensile failure would provide the most efficient fragmentation. No tool that produces a combination of high energy input rate and a loading system that produces failure under only conditions of unconfined tensile load now exists. Present mining methods and tools produce failure under conditions of high compressive confinement, high dispersive energy loss and high frictional energy requirements. Thus, while generally applying energy at high rates, they are highly inefficient with respect to energy consumed in fragmenting rock. To best design fragmentation tools and optimize fragmentation systems it would be desirable to know how rock properties influence breakage. At present, rock properties directly- related to fragmentation are undefined. Although present testing technology- does not permit rigorous definition of in-situ rock fragmentation behavior, several properties (mechanical and physical) commonly are used to indicate the relative case with which rock breaks. The more common test is for uniaxial compressive or tensile strength of cylindrical cores taken from intact portions of the in-situ rock (testing details are provided ill Sec. 6.2, Rock Mechanics). The strength of rock is influenced by the environmental conditions imposed on the rock. Those of most importance in rock are (1) confining pressure. (2) pore fluid pressure, (3) temperature and (4) rate of load application. Increase in confining pressure, as with increasing depth beneath the earth's surface or under the action of a fragmentation tool, causes an increase in rock strength. Increases from atmospheric pressure to 10.000 psi commonly cause up to n fourfold increase in the compressive strength of crystalline rock. Apparent rock strength decreases as pore fluid pressure increases, since it decreases the effect of confining pressure. The effective stress concept of soil mechanics generally applies to rock. Although chemical effects of pore fluids influence rock strength, they geologically are small compared to the confining pressure effect, except for a small minority of rock types. Ontario, one of the richest mining districts in the world, is a natural storehouse for much of the earth's fresh water supply. Covering over 344,000 square miles, the surface of this Canadian Province is dotted with 250,000 fresh water lakes and is laced with uncounted thousands of fresh water rivers and streams. The southern portion of the Province, for the most part, is flat or lazily rolling farmland. This is where most of the people in Ontario live. Although it is not a major mining area, southern Ontario does possess important deposits of salt, oil, gas and gypsum. Most of these deposits are being actively worked. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, lies deep in the southern region. Here the climate is mild and the winters are short. The total annual precipitation consists of 27 inches of rain and 65 inches of snow. Most of the major mining companies that do business in Canada have made Toronto their Canadian headquarters. There are two reasons for this. The first, of course, is money. Toronto is the gathering place of many well- known financial institutions. The second is access. Toronto lies within a few hundred miles of some of the most spectacular mining enterprises that exist in the world.

Although it is apparent that porphyry copper deposits may have formed in the Andean orogen from Permian time onward, commercial deposits thus far developed appear to have Cenozoic ages only. Following Chilean useage, the porphyry deposits are divided into either: (a) a stockwork, or (b) a tourmaline breccia model. Stockwork type deposits tend to occur on major strike-slip structures which may be either transcurrent or transverse faults related to plate movements, while the tourmaline breccia type may more frequently form independently of regional faults. Stockwork types may be conjugate fractures that intersect and ramify as a network of veins and veinlets, cutting altered rock, and genetically related to a major regional fault, or in other cases they may reflect the intersection of two large fault structures. Circular fracture patterns may more rarely occur in stockwork deposits in response to a specific intrusive. Tourmaline breccia types are characterized by circular and radial fractures genetically connected in some way with tourmaline breccia pipe development or an intrusive piercement that preceded it. Each structural model contains mineralized intrusive8 which have a close time-space relationship to ore and in each model, mineral paragenesis is similar, regardless of age or location in the plate. Also, each model contains the same type of alterntion halos (phyllic, argillic, prophllitic) as are developed in intru- sive centers in porphyry copper deposits found in North America. The potassic zone is exposed best in the older deposits. Examples of each type of deposit are illustrated, demonstrating the feature evolved.

During the past few years, a completely new concept has been applied to the design of drives for operating at very low speeds. In this, the motor is supplied by a variable-frequency thyristor cyclo-converter. Today, frequency converters with practically unlimited power ratings can be constructed. The system frequency of 50 or 60 Hz is reduced to about 10 % of these values. This makes it possible to operate the synchronous motor, which has a correspondingly high number of poles, at the extremely low speed of the driven mill, i.e, without interposed gearing. The first motors of this type were built to drive ball mills in the cement industry, which are very similar to those employed for ore processing. Here, too, the tendency is to build units of ever increasing capacity. In the case of conventional drives with mechanical gearing, this involves correspondingly increasing difficulties. These difficulties have prompted various studies of the possibility of applying the new type of drive to ore mills as well, but a gearless drive has not yet been built for this application. However, gearless drives for ore mills will certainly materialize soon and it was therefore considered a logical step to report at the A.I.M.E. Conference on the experience gained with these drives in the cement industry, and on the present state of development.

There are large areas on all of the continents with environments which are favorable for deposits of zinc and lead of Mississippi Valley type. In the developed countries, these environments have for the most part been quite thoroughly explored for the near surface deposits, and it will be necessary to direct more effort to the search for deeper buried deposits from which much of our future production must come. The difficulties of exploration for deep ore of this type are many and formidable, but the area of permissive environments beneath deep cover is many times as great as the area of the known near surface ore districts. It is a reasonable assumption, therefore, that numerous deposits wait for discovery and development. The finding cost, however, is certain to increase, and it is essential that concepts and techniques of exploration be improved if we are to sustain a reasonably strong productive capability into the 21st century. Exploration for deeply buried deposits requires at the outset relatively large areas of favorable geologic environment. The favorable horizons must be within economic limits of depth for the exploration as well as for the mining techniques which are currently available; and there must be some condition, design or strategy which will assure the explorer a reasonable chance of obtaining maximum benefit from discoveries which he may make.

In 1971, the Minerals Division of The Superior Oil Company acquired exploration rights to an unpatented claim group in the Superior (Pioneer), Arizona mining district, lying west of the Concentrator fault. This major post-mineral fault displaces the Magma vein-fault, which is mined in the Magma Mine at Superior, Arizona. The Magma vein-fault and the enclosing section of pre-mineral rocks consisting of Paleozoic and younger Precambrian sediments and diabase, is overlain by a thick section of post-mineral rocks, consisting of the Gila conglomerate, the Apache Leap dacite, and the Whitetail conglomerate. Geologic information on the thickness and attitudes of the rocks obtained from previous diamond drilling indicated that the section of post-mineral rocks might be from 3,000 to over 4,010 feet thick in the target area. (Figure 1) The Magma vein-fault is a steeply dipping vein which has produced nearly a billion dollars of copper, zinc, silver, and gold. It has been mined continuously for nearly 10,000 feet along the strike and nearly 5,000, feet vertically down the dip. It ranges from less than a foot to over 50 feet wide and contains sulfide mineralization con¬sisting of pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, and chalcocite.

Quartz crystals are the raw material from which are made the crystal units utilized in filters and oscillators so vital to the performance of all long distance communications systems. These devices act as the heart of equipment that permits a single telephone cable to carry hundreds of conversations simultaneously. Quartz crystals are of value in communications because of this piezoelectric nature, that is when an electric signal is applied to the quartz, there is a resulting mechanical motion and conversely, a mechanical stress results in an electrical output signal. A plate cut from a quartz crystal will oscillate at some specific frequency, which is determined by the physical dimension of the plate. During the early stages of telephony, all quartz plates were cut from natural quartz, which was imported mainly from Brazil. Since the source of this important raw material was based upon a foreign supply which is located at a great distance from the user and could be vulnerable in time of a national emergent, it became necessary to maintain a large inventory of this strategic material. Also due to the considerable cost of natural crystals of a size and quality suitable for Bell System use, an investigation was made by Bell Laboratories into the possibility of developing a substitute material. The effort was successful and led to a joint development program between Bell Laboratories and Western Electric. This program brought about the design of manufacturing facilities capable of producing large quantities of cultured quartz at Western's Merrimack Valley Works, No. Andover, Massachusetts.
