A continuous on-line particle size analysis system for solid/liquid suspensions is described. The basic sensor utilizes a centrifugal principle to separate particles according to size, the resultant separation being measured by means of beta-ray attenuation. Results obtained when analyzing a variety of materials at sizes from 65 mesh (210 microns) to 20 microns are discussed in de- tail. Accuracies better than 2% are demonstrated. The effects of particle specific gravity, and mixtures of materials of diverse specific gravities, are discussed from a practical and theoretical viewpoint. It is demonstrated that particle specific gravity has a minimal effect on the size reading obtained. This renders the instrument suitable for handling materials where the ratio of light to heavy component may change. The design of the first commercial installation of this instrument is described in detail. This installation will be capable of analyzing three streams in sequence, measurement at three particle sizes being effected on each stream.

4.1 – DEFINITIONS 4.1.1-MINERALS, ROCKS, ORES AND NONMETALLIC MINERALS F. N. EARLL A mineral is a naturally occurring inorganic element or compound. Most minerals are distinctly crystalline in habit, and many commonly occur in well-formed crystals or crystalline aggregates, but a few species are characteristically amorphous or noncrystalline. Nearly 2,000 mineral species are now recognized but, perhaps fortun¬ately, a rather large proportion are rarely encountered. Even so, the application of modern mineral-detection and identification techniques reveals the presence of surprising numbers of mineral species, even in deposits of outwardly simple mineralogy. A rock is an aggregate of grains or crystals of one or more minerals. Some rocks are essentially monomineralic. Thus, limestone consists largely of the mineral calcite, and many sandstones are dominantly quartz. Most rock varieties, however, contain a number of mineral species, and their classification or identification depends upon the minerals present, their relative abundance, and such factors as rock tex¬ture and origin. Ore is defined as an accumulation or deposit of one or more minerals that can be exploited at a profit. The profit criterion commonly is taken somewhat liberally, however, for, although always present, the specific mineral content that constitutes a viable product is transitory. The term ore, usually, but no longer consistently, is restricted to the description of mineral deposits that are of value for their metal content. Nonmetallic deposits, although similar to metallic ores in many respects, generally are valued for the minerals or compounds present, as with rock salt (halite), rather than for individual contained elements, though such minerals as elemental sulfur are of much value. 4.1.2-ROCK TYPES F. N. EARLL Rocks arc grouped tinder three broad headings: (1) igneous rocks formed by the crystallization of magma; (2) sedimentary rocks formed by surface processes of weathering and deposition; and (3) metamorphic rocks, which may have been derived from either of the foregoing, but have undergone important physical and/or chemical changes through the application of heat or pressure, or both. The three groups can he further subdivided for convenient reference. Thus, igneous rocks are described as being abyssal or plutonic if formed at great depth, hypabyssal if formed at intermediate depth, and extrusive or effusive if formed at or on the earth's surface. The sedimentary rock group is similarly subdivided into clastic sediments and chemical precipitates. The clastic sediments form by deposition of preexisting minerals that were released from their place of origin by weathering and were transported to their point of deposition as discrete grains

Organized efforts toward the prevention of injuries and occupational diseases have been of comparatively recent origin in the mining industry, dating generally from the beginning of this century. Mining-and particularly underground mining- is more hazardous in many respects than most other major industries, and continual and increasing attention has been given to its health and safety aspects. The importance of the physical well-being of those engaged in mining was recognized by Agricola, who, after describing the hazards encountered in 16th century mining operations, stated that "Some of these evils, as well as certain other things, are the reason why pits are occasionally abandoned." In the past 50 yr particularly, mine managements and labor organizations, separately or collectively, have mounted productive efforts toward the prevention of accidents and industry-associated diseases and illnesses. A statistical study of this period indicates that increasing awareness coupled with the endeavors of all concerned agencies has resulted in decreasing frequency of occurrences of injuries and illnesses. In recent years particularly the mining industry has used the services of safety engineers, industrial hygienists, inspectors, ventilation engineers and other specializing in locating and correcting deficiencies affecting the welfare of employees. Concurrently, the labor movement has incorporated into its organization individuals working in the fields of health and safety, many devoting full time to these responsibilities. Others serve in behalf of their fellow workmen as on-the-job safety representatives. Most authorities agree that accidents are caused by (1) unsafe acts, (2) unsafe conditions and, exceptionally, (3) Acts of God. The "unsafe act" often is cited as the prime cause. but many accidents, and attendant injuries, are the result of a blend of "unsafe acts" and "unsafe conditions," with each chargeable in varying proportions. It therefore is necessary to consider both the physical elements of the mine plant and the training, mental attributes and actions of all personnel involved. Analysis of an accident, if based on hasty reconnaissance and unduly hurried questioning, seldom will disclose more than surface causes and consequently will result in inadequate measures to prevent repetition. Mining involves unavoidable and calculated risks, as in all facets of life. It is most important then that men employed in mining be schooled in the hazards and develop fully the ability to evaluate and minimize risks. The environment, of underground mining often is harsh and strange compared to the more natural surface conditions man has learned to cope with as a part of established life patterns. The miner. therefore, must adapt to unusual situations and conditions and must develop a mental attitude permitting acceptance of change. 3.1-INDUSTRY-AFFILIATED SAFETY AGENCIES L. S. Porphyry copper deposits in the southwestern Pacific area represent relative newcomers to the growing number of occurrences of this mineral deposit type. In addition to firmly establishing the importance of this region and its potential influence within the framework of world copper resources, the deposits of this region are significant from a scientific point of view because of their close relationship to the phenomena of Island Arc evolution. Since the discovery of Panguna on Bougainville in 1964, the list of prospects, proven and unproven, and developments, has grown to more than twenty and the number continues to increase. At the time of this writing, the number of prospects is imperfectly known but the following localities and numbers are fair minimum approximations: Manus (Admiralty Islands) (3); New Britain (5); New Ireland (1); Guadalcanal (2); New Guinea Highlands (6); Misima (1); and Fiji (2); Proven prospects are present in the new Guinea Highlands (2); one deposit is being developed in Test Irian, and one orebody, on Bougainville, is in production. This summary paper concerns a discussion of some of the geological characteristics of producers, developments, and prospects on the Islands of Nets Guinea, New Britain, Bougainville, Guadalcanal, and Manus. I am not aware of publishable data for Misima or Fiji. As so many variables ultimately determine whether or not a porphyry copper occurrence becomes an orebody, not the least of which is geography, this summary treats the characteristics of these occurrences which alloy; their assignment to the porphyry copper category. For purposes of this discussion, I have considered those copper occurrences which are apparently genetically related to talc-alkaline intrusions and in which the content of copper has been upgraded 50 to 100 times the Clarke for that particular host rock. Some of these occurrences are shown on Figure 1.

G. GREGORY BRYAN 33.1-DEFINITIONS 1. Engineering-Engineering may be defined simply as the science and art of making materials and energy serve the purposes of mankind. There are many fields of engineering, each with specialized branches. The basic fields are: civil, mechanical, electrical and chemical. Others may be specialized phases of one of these or a combination of two or more of them. Mining engineering, for example, requires a working knowledge of construction, mechanics, electricity, metallurgy, geology, accounting and economics, in addition to mining techniques or methods. Mining geology and geological engineering involve rocks and their structure and the forces that act upon them, and chemistry, physics and mechanics also are important to practitioners in these fields. Metallurgical engineering requires chemistry and physics but also a working knowledge of mechanics and electricity. The fields of engineering with which this section are concerned are those primarily involved in the finding, mining, processing and utilization of the natural mineral resources of the earth. They include geology, mining engineering and metallurgy, each with several specialized subdivisions. 2. The Engineer-The engineer is an individual who has had specialized training to qualify him to practice the profession of engineering. The term engineer is used here in its broadest sense to include such professions as certain applied branches of geology, physics and chemistry, whose practitioners may not have acquired engineering degrees but who, nevertheless, by training and experience in some area of the minerals industry, qualify under the above definition. To become a successful engineer, a person should have certain pronounced aptitudes and preferences, even before embarking upon the requisite course of training. Among the chief qualifications that the engineer-to-he must possess are: (a) a natural inclination toward mathematics and the physical sciences, and (b) intellectual and moral honesty. Among the qualities the student engineer must develop are: (a) independence of thought, open-mindedness, sound judgment and the ability to observe, deduce, plan and apply solutions, (b) the ability to articulate and convince, and (c) the ability to organize and direct the activity of others. These qualities are normally developed through sound education, followed by pro¬gressive experience. 3. The Consulting Engineer-The consulting engineer is an engineer primarily in the business of furnishing specialized advice and engineering services on an intermit¬tent, part-time or occasional basis to clients who do not have continuous or full-time need for those services. He must be able to make and take full responsibility for decisions and recom¬mendations where original thought is required. He should not be confused with the engineer, surveyor or technician who also may furnish services on an intermittent basis, such as regular periodic surveys, the overseeing of drilling programs and other such routine work as may require little original thought and planning. 33.2-THE PROFESSION OF CONSULTING ENGINEERING 33.2.1- QUALITIES REQUIRED A successful consulting engineer must first have, as a minimum, the qualities and preparation of an engineer. The mechanistic or phenomenological approach to ball milling involving the, concepts of particulate selection and breakage functions with particle population balance models has been well established over the past decade (c.f., the review articles by Austin (1) Herbst and Mika, (2) and Snow (3)). Initial efforts to apply this approach concentrated on batch milling, but since most milling in industrial practice is continuous, much recent research has been directed to extending this approach to continuous milling. The primary difference between batch and continuous milling processes is the relative importance of material mixing and transport in the mill in the latter case. Much analytical (4-8) and some experimental (9-15) work on the effect of mill mixing and transport on milling has been recently reported. Much of the analytical work has naturally centered around extension of the well-developed concepts that have been applied to chemical reactors, (16-18) Fortunately, it has been found(1) that most milling processes are analogous to first-order chemical reactions so that the combined effects of material transport and reaction (breakage) can be handled by the relatively simple segregated flow concepts. This paper reports on mineral facies, ore textures, distribution of iron in sphalerites, and fractionation of sulfur isotopes in the Anvil ore body, Yukon Territory, Canada. Because the detailed structure and stratigraphy, both regional and local, are being studied by the geological staff at the mine and members of the Geological Survey of Canada, these topics will be discussed only briefly. The results of our study of the Anvil ore body have implications on theories of the genesis of ore deposits of this type, and these will be discussed. The Anvil ore body is the largest and most significant of three lead-zinc discoveries in an area of the central Yukon where major lead-zinc deposits were unknown only twenty years ago. The Vangorda deposit consisting of 22 million tons was discovered in 1953, followed in 1954 by the Swim Lakes deposit consisting of 10 million tons. The Anvil deposit, which consists of three ore zones, was discovered in 1964. The total reserve at Anvil mine is 63.5 million tons, with an average grade of 3.4% lead, 5.7% zinc, 0.16% copper and 1.2 ounces of silver per ton. This study is concerned primarily with the number one ore body which is about 2,400 feet long, up to 1,100 feet wide and 300 feet thick.

As the trend to deeper mines, producing from marginal ore bodies, continues, mine hoists and their associated equipment will become more sophisticated, complex, large and expensive. Over the past two decades, mine hoisting equipment and systems have moved from steam engines to static rectification of ac to dc, and electronic controls are the standard. It is the intent of this section to present what is currently available in the field of mine hoisting equipment and systems. Because the present engineer has been exposed longer and more intensively to such things as computers, electronic devices, and machine design, no attempt has been made to make this a layman's article. Contributions from the electrical design and application engineer, gearing and hearing design engineers and other specialists have been incorporated. Some material will be devoted to electrical drive systems, rectifiers and gearing design among others. These items are inherent in the design of a mine hoisting system and the subsequent selection of the correct, most reliable and most economic system. The mine hoist can be a bottleneck between the underground mine and the surface mill. Correct selection of the right type of hoist is imperative. In this vital link between mine and mill, crude estimates of hoist capacity are not good enough, and the mining engineer must design and select the right hoisting system to meet the design specifications. 15.1-MINE HOIST TYPES There are two basic types of mine hoists available anywhere in the world today: the drum hoist on which the hoist rope is actually stored during the hoisting cycle, and the friction (Koepe), which merely passes the rope over the wheel during the hoisting process. Drum and friction hoists are "generic" terms which describe the two basic categories. Within each category are variations, as below. 15.1.1-DRUM HOISTS Drum hoists, as noted, actually store the hoist rope on the drum much the same as line on a fishing reel. To accomplish this task, the drums are so designed to store, in one or more layers, the footage of wire rope equal to the total maximum hoisting distance plus sufficient rope for cutting and inspection at regular intervals and for holding to the drum (see Fig. 15-1). Usual practice in hoist drum design is to allow three turns of hoist rope for holding on the drum and three turns for inspection cuttings. 1. Single-Drum Hoists-Fig. 15-2 shows a typical single-drum hoist as manufactured by most U.S. heavy-mining-equipment companies. With the exception of some very minor features, this design configuration is standard throughout the U.S.A. Fig. 15-3 is a plan view of a typical single-drum mine hoist. This particular hoist has a single-motor drive and a double-reduction set of gearing.

One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. Advantages are: ease of loading because of the low sides, simplicity, cheapness and high ratio of capacity to weight. The disadvantages include the

13.1-SUBSIDENCE AND GROUND MOVEMENT ROBERT STEFANKO 13.1.1-SUBSIDENCE AND FAILURE This treatment of subsidence and ground movement will be confined to subsidence control for limiting surface damage by assessing the significant parameters affecting ground movements during mining to optimize mining techniques. The material will be equally applicable to evaporite mining as well as coal but will not deal with block caving or similar systems where failure is deliberately induced and surface protection is not necessary or provided. When an underground opening is established, the original equilibrium is disturbed with resultant stress concentrations. While many factors are involved in opening stability, the span (W) undoubtedly is one of the most important factors in failure. Assuming it is relatively small, the overlying rock strata can bridge across the opening and little if any movement or convergence of top and bottom will occur. However, as the span increases, a point is reached where the stress in the overlying rock strata exceeds some strength value of the rock, and the top breaks. If the opening span is limited to some subcritical value (-We) and/or is at great depth (D), a pseudo-arch will form, achielring stability before rupture occurs to the surface. The boundary of this arch is thought to approximate an ellipse in form with the major axis vertical and equal to four times W, although there has been little field research to substantiate this theory. However, if the width of this opening is increased at this horizon to some critical value (W,) or the same span is created in a shallower seam, the overlying strata ill progressively rupture to the surface and the characteristic subsidence trough is formed (Fig. 13-1) The area of the surface affected is much greater than the area of the seam extracted, depending on the "angle of draw" (a), which is the angle between a vertical line from the edge of the opening and another line extended to a point at which subsidence tails out to zero. This angle has been found to be about 35° in Europe but is rather academic, being a function of instrument precision in detecting subsidence. Since the subsidence effect is so small at any point beyond n 25° angle, this latter may be considered the practical limit of subsidence. Further- more, indications are that the angle of draw varies with depth and nature of the strata.' In a field study over a 1,000-ft-deep potash mine in New Mexico, the maximum angle of draw was found to be 51.5°.2 So far, only a single opening has been considered. However, the width of the excavation applies to any complex mining system of entries, rooms and longwalls as long as the seam has been fully extracted and the width represents the distance from one solid rib to another. It will be noted that the amount of vertical displacement varies from point to point on the surface (s), but the maximum subsidence for a given trough occurs at the center (S). This latter value may not he equal to the maximum possible subsidence (Sm) which occurs only if a critical or super- critical (+W,) width has been exceeded (Fig. 13-1). Substantial surface damage can result when subsidence occurs. Factors affecting the amount and type of ground movement are: thickness and properties of the seam, angle of draw, width of excavation, depth and type of overburden, inclinations of strata and surface, and the amount of support left in the gob. Unmodified pneumatic rock drills may have noise levels of 115 to 130 dB at the operator's position. Experimental modifications have been made to a standard drill to suppress the noise from the three main sources: the air exhaust noise, the noise radiated from the drill, and the resonance noise of the steel drill rods. A prototype model developed at the Bureau of Mines, Rolla Metallurgy Research Center, operates at a noise level below 100 dB. A close-fitting case and muffler unit, consisting of a metallic skeleton filled with viscoelastic absorber and having a durable cover, provided both muffling and noise absorption. Damping alloys were used at strategic points in the drill. Drill steel resonance noise was reduced by a constrained-layer treatment on the outside of the drill rod. The singular and combined effects of the treatments are presented in detail.

The concepts of sea floor spreading and plate tectonics provide more logical explanations of some geologic processes than were possible a few years ago. I plan to premise my discussion of the regional features of Philippine porphyry copper deposits on this tectonic basis, recognizing that parts of the picture can be explained in other ways, but in the belief that this is the best explanation of the whole. The sequence of events which results in the formation of Porphyry deposits (Figure 1) can be summarized as the result of collision of crustal plates, subduction of the oceanic plate, emplacement of a serpentine ultrabasic diapir, formation of a dioritic magma at depths of 300 to 500 km, rise of the magma to a sub crustal or intra-crustal chamber, eruption of andesitic volcanoes, emplacement of diorite or differentiation of the magma into more acidic products, multiple intrusion of hypabyssal rocks and hydro-

A highly undesirable side effect of the mining of coal is the release of acid forming chemicals into the ground water system. The disturbance of the ground during mining allows water to flow through the coal bearing strata and mine refuge where it absorbs iron and sulfide ions and thus becomes highly acidic. The highly acid mine water can then contaminate water supplies and can destroy many of the recreational uses of Pennsylvania's waterways. A great deal of effort has been expended to develop methods of controlling groundwater pollution from mine drainage. At the Pennsylvania State University there has been an ongoing effort to under- stand the chemistry of acid mine water formation and the hydrologic environment in which the acidic water migrates from the mine source into the ground water system. As a support to the hydrologic studies, geophysical studies have been used to help determine the geologic structure of the areas under study which are contaminated by acid water. In addition, the geophysical work has been used to define the type of information geophysical methods can give to determine which geophysical methods are most useful and to develop geophysical field procedures.

During the last few years the New Lead Belt of South- eastern Missouri has become the main source of lead in the United States. It also produces significant amounts of zinc, copper, and silver. The mines are located on a narrow, mineralized trend extending southward from Viburnum, Missouri for about thirty-five miles. The area is part of the Ozark uplift and consists of steep-sided, heavily wooded hills with narrow valleys. Surface streams are very erratic, normally having low flows but becoming rushing torrents during the violent thunderstorms that occasionally occur. Because of the pristine nature of the country and the newness of the mining developments, the environmental impact of all phases has been closely watched.

A new system for leaching many types of ores has recently been developed on a commercial basis by J and J Research and Development, Inc. of Hanover, New Mexico. This revolutionary new leaching system consists principally of three new leaching reactors; viz, (1) a large, air-agitates, column-like reactor for leaching crushed ores that is constructed in an underground environment and has the inherent ability to do a very efficient job of leaching, (2) a vat-like, air-agitated vessel for leaching an rinsing finely ground ores and , (3) an air-agitated copper precipitation column that is built underground and utilizes an inexpensive dense or heavy scrap iron as a copper precipitant. Each of these new reactors have been used in a large leaching plant near Hanover, New Mexico.

The properties of a geologic mass may be considered from a resource or an engineering viewpoint. The primary engineering applications include ground control, excavation, bulk handling, and hydrology. This study will focus upon these areas in descending order. For an adequate geologic description, data is necessary on the following components: (1) the intact rock, (2) geologic structures, (3) contained fluids, and (4) existing pressures and temperatures, see Table 1. This information, combined with the engineering specifications, provides the basis for a formal geotechnical analysis as illustrated in Figure 1. For a structural analysis it is essential to establish the mechanical properties of the material composing the structure. This material, termed the "rock mass," consists mainly of the first two geologic components, the intact rock and geologic structures (Figure 1) Consideration of fluids will be subordinated to their role as chemical agents affecting the mechanical properties. The existence of pressures and temperatures generally lies beyond the scope of this study.

Feldspar is no example of special mineralization in isolated spots: it can usually be found within a mile or so of almost anywhere. Along with silica sand, it is a major part of our world's total mineral composition. This fact imparts to it an economic status different from a sulfide ore, or potash, or phosphate. While every feldspathic "stringer" does not possess economic potential, the generous distribution does yield a high statistical frequency of good feldspar ore bodies: the adjective "good" being subject to some flexibility of interpretation. The strong chemical bonds of this alkali aluminum silicate give it certain use advantages, but under present technology its individual elements cannot practically be separated to create aluminum, potassium, sodium, silicon - or their oxides. Its present uses rely upon chemical inertness - as in fillers; and on its physical melting characteristics and their effect in glass, enamel, or ceramics.

R. L. LOOFBOUROW 26.1-WATER FLOW, USE, EFFECTS, CONTROL Sec. 4 discusses ground water as a mineral resource. This section deals wits its control. 26.1.1-IMPORTANCE Flows of water have an important effect on the cost and progress of many deep excavations. The existence of water limits the methods which can be used in some and presents hazards in others. Lowering the water table may reduce the flow of springs and wells, with legal liability. Some mine water is used directly, some must he treated before discharge, and some contains dissolved solids which can be recovered profitably. Loss of life, property and production from flooding is grim, yet scores of mines have worked safely for generations under ground-water reservoirs, lakes and even the sea. The need for better control of mine water is measured by the severity of recent floodings, concern with the quality of the effluent, and direct and indirect costs of working wet ground. There are improvements in freezing in shaft sinking. pumps and their controls, treatment of mine water before it is pumped, bulkhead construction and certain efforts to reduce inflow. 26.1.2-PUMPING COST VS. COST OF WET WORK Direct operating and capital costs of pumping are more evident than indirect items, such as provision of extra standby power and maintenance facilities, The total of all these items is the cost of pumping water from an excavation. This is only a part of the extra cost of working wet as compared to dry ground. Less productive methods, less efficient equipment and more expensive explosives may have to he used in wet work. Wet rock plugs certain equipment. Maintenance is higher and labor less efficient. The cost of any means of keeping work drier should he weighed against the higher cost of working wet. The true difference in the cost of working wet ground, compared with dry, probably is known at only a few places (see checklist of cost items. Sec. 26.4.13). An extreme comparison of mining wet and dry ore is available from Ambrosia Lake, N.M. (Fig. 26-1). Between 1963 and 1967, a wet and a dry mine were worked by the same company under conditions otherwise comparable. Average operating cost at the wet mine, pumping 1,600 to 1,800 gpm. was $16.06 per ton of ore. The comparable figure for the dry mine was $7.50. Principal differences included the fact that the wet mine was worked from drainage levels below the, ore with rail haulage, the dry mine in the ore with off-track equipment loading and hauling to the shaft. In the wet mine, ore packed in chutes, cars and skips and froze in surface bins, stockpiles and trucks. Wet-mine costs included drilling drain holes, building and maintaining ditches and pumping water containing abrasive solids.

9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition
