An attempt has been made to compile and code geologic data relating to twenty of the major porphyry copper districts of North America in such a manner as to permit the use of modern electronic digital computers to retrieve, compare, and build statistical mathematical models from the input. In the exploration process as part of his broader efforts to evaluate the potential of some prospective region, district, or ore body, the experienced geologist consciously or subconsciously compares and fits the observed geologic features to similar phenomena associated with known ore bodies with which he is acquainted. Thus an adequate conceptual "model" of the total geologic environment and type of ore body sought is an essential requirement for the successful exploration effort. Numerous such models of porphyry coppers already exist in the minds and notes of many experienced geologists today. These models are, of necessity, couched largely in qualitative terms and though they may be quite definite in the mind of the porphyry copper expert, the total concept of what constitutes a porphyry copper deposit and environment is difficult to convey in very precise terms. There probably is no such thing as a typical porphyry copper deposit. However, it is well understood that most of the deposits that have been studied have many geological characteristics in common. A logical question then might be: What characteristics are most common or how often do they occur in common, and what is their relationship to other common characteristics ?

Studies of sulfidization and flotation of chrysocolla involving the use of pH and sulfide ion instruments, a Zeta meter, microflotation techniques, and sensitive determinations of adsorbed sulfur have given new insight into the mechanism of the process. Factors that affect the recovery of sulfidized chrysocolla by flotation appear to be the pH at which it is sulfidized, and certain alterations of the surface that occur during aging after sulfidization. Such aging results in increased recoveries. The surface charge, as measured by electrophoretic mobility, of chrysocolla shows an unexpected negative increase as pH values are changed from 6.0 to about 4.5, and this appears to be correlated with increasing sulfur adsorption and flotation recovery over the same or even wider pH ranges.

The single most unique design feature of the Centralia Coal Mine is the public information program. Just what the heck does public information have to do with the development of a coal mine? The utilities of today have had to build larger and larger plants to keep down the costs of power to the consumer. The large plants require huge amounts of capital, take up large areas of real estate, consume unprecedented amounts of coal, and generate large quantities of waste products which have to be reckoned with. Coal mines supplying these plants have also increased in size and production to meet the power plants' unending appetite for coal. This means the disturbance of great areas of land and significant alterations to the landscape. Today's public is greatly concerned about the environment in which he is living. The great size of a power plant with its large stacks, coal piles, and the coal mine with its large earth movers, disturbed acreages and the resulting waste products of both operations appears to present a threat to his environment. Because of this,' many power plants and coal mines are having public acceptance problems. This has resulted in the passage of stringent legislation and in some cases brought upon construction delays for major power plants.

Why is there such an increased thrust toward positive multiple use land management and where will it lead? History and purpose of the mining law of 1872. John Marshall discovered gold at Sutter?s mill near Coloma, California, on January 19, 1848, and utter chaos resulted. The great migration of people to the undeveloped western lands had begun. Prior to this discovery, copper, lead, and iron had been the minerals for which the laws were made. With this discovery of gold on the public domain, it became apparent that congressional legislation was necessary. This became even more apparent as each of the numerous mining districts which were springing up in California, and elsewhere in the west adopted local miners' customs to regulate their activities. Although these early miners acted under mining district rules and in some cases state regulations, they were, in reality, appropriating minerals without sanction of federal law.

Large reserves of copper are contained in waste dumps which have been created by open-pit mining of porphyry-type copper deposits in the Western United States. Nearly 6 billion tons of copper-bearing material exists in the waste dumps at present, and another billion tons will be added each three to four years as additional material is stripped from the present mines and new open-pit mines are developed. The dumps constitute an enormous resource containing some 7 to 10 billion dollars worth of copper. Increased attention is being given to the recovery of copper by leaching from these dumps as attested by the fact that in 1968 approximately $175 million of copper was recovered by leaching operations. During the leaching process, however, numerous problems exist which prevent complete extraction of the copper from the dumps. Probably the most important problem encountered is the incomplete contact of the copper-bearing materials by the leaching solutions. This problem is mainly created by the formation of physically compacted and chemically cemented layers within the dumps which prevent solution flow to many sections of the interior of the dumps.

CLAYS CONTAIN the mineral kaolinite, a hydrated aluminum silicate. It is an important potential raw material for aluminum, especially for those countries possessing no bauxite deposits. Therefore, there is no surprise to find a large volume of research done for the recovery of aluminum from clays. Kaolinite (Al203?2 SiO2?H20) contains 39.8% A1203; 46.3 % SiO2, and 12.9 % H2O. The analysis of a good-quality dried clay of an Eastern Canadian siliceous shale is shown in Table 8-1.

A variety of mathematical techniques are available in the pertinent literature concerning the interpretation and reduction of aeromagnetic data. The quantitative methods applicable to this data en¬compass a wide spectrum including filtering, continuation, derivatives, reduction to the poles, spectral analysis, and "undraping" of flight line data. With the aid of the digital computer, the techniques listed, and others, can be computationally performed on a gridded data set. In addition, current sophisticated computer hardware permits the systems analyst greater latitude in the storage and retrieval of data and in the display of resultant naps on a digital x-y plotter than previously available. Although many interpretive techniques concerning magnetic data have been published and computer machinery has been on the market, little has been written incorporating both disciplines into a unified digital processing system. In the present paper, a general purpose system in given which in designed for routine use in the interpretation of aeromagnetic (and other potential field, etc.) maps.

The term "powder factor" is almost universally accepted as the measure of the efficiency of a blasting program. It represents the economics of blasting since it designates quantity of explosive (thereby providing quality control in rock fragmentation) in terms of the associated volume broken. It is the wide use of this concept that explains the interest shown in an approach to rock blasting preferred by A. W. and Z. W. Daw* in a treatise on 3 blasting (1) substantiating its use in the form, Q = CVW3 for single shot hole, where Q = quantity of explosive lb Cv = blasting coefficient W3 = unit volume of rock It is obvious that the term Cv could also be called the apparent powder factor should the equation be written in the form, Cv = Q/W3 (lb per cubic unit). However, while the approach was ingenious** and the practical applications straightforward, their original, rather limited experimental work, along with certain assumptions, was questioned.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the various designs and design alternates available for large fine crushing plants, and to discuss objectives and criteria upon which these designs are founded. Common practice for size reduction of run-of-mine or run-of-pit ore in preparation for subsequent treatment utilizes a three-stage system. First stage, or primary breaking is generally carried out with jaw or gyratory crushers. The usual output from this stage provides a feed for fine crushing in the size range of 6 to 10 inches. This discussion is limited to the process of fine crushing, and we will further limit it to what is commonly called secondary and tertiary crushing. We define a large crushing plant as one with a minimum capacity of 2,000 tons per hour. Generally, these plants utilize cone type crushers to reduce ore for rod, ball, or pebble mill feed.

Sanitary landfilling has become one of the most widely used methods of disposing of solid refuse. A principal concern of regulatory agencies and the public itself is that landfill operations do not degrade the physical environment, including water resources, and the ground-water reservoir in particular. Ground-water and engineering geology can guide landfill operations into suitable terranes or develop measures to compensate for any natural limitations at a particular site Experience and research in Illinois suggest four activities relating to landfill disposal that warrant attention by geologists and engineers: (1) Regional delineation of favorable and unfavorable hydrogeologic conditions to facilitate planning and preliminary screening of potential landfill sites. (2) Site evaluations, with considerations of geologic materials, topography, water levels, flow systems, and local occurrence and use of water resources. (3) Re- search on aspects of the hydrogeologic environment that control effects of, or are modified by, landfills. (4) Formulation of practices in the siting, construction, and operation of landfills that prevent, mitigate, or isolate deleterious effects. The first two activities are basically in the domain of earth science, requiring the application of fundamental concepts of geology and hydrology and conventional site-exploration methods. The third activity, research, requires contributions from geology as well as other disciplines, including soil physics, sanitary engineering, and chemistry. The fourth calls for policy decisions by regulatory agencies and elected officials, using the contributions of scientists and engineers.

The Companhia Vale do Rio Doce in Brazil operates one of the most extensive systems in the world for the mining, transportation, processing, pelletizing and shipping of high grade hematite iron ore and pellets. Current shipping of unbeneficiated, sized, high grade ore from its ports at Tubarão and Vitória is now at the rate of 17,500,000 metric tons annually. An increase in this annual rate is now under study. Using the technology and facilities of Lurgi (1) and Arthur G. McKee company CVRD undertook a program to process and pelletize two types of fines - "Blue Dust" and ?Itabira Fines?. Blue Dust is a high grade fine ore which was bypassed while mining the direct shipping ores and which, also, exists as a very large ore body called the Conceição Mine. Itabira Fines is a lower grade of fine ore which is comprised of in-situ fines and, also fines which are generated in sizing the direct shipping ores for a rigid specification market.

A portable electronic instrument was developed which will measure change of longitudinal wave velocity with change of uniaxial stress in rock columns. The instrument is a solid-state device powered by nickel-cadmium batteries. It uses a probe of two piezo-electric crystals spaced inches apart to send and receive a pulse through a stressed rock. A one-inch cathode ray oscilloscope visually displays the longitudinal wave. A reference chart is used to find the stress. Laboratory results have indicated that the average stress on a sandstone column can be found to within 35 psi. The feasibility of using this instrument to determine stresses in mine pillars is to be studied. The instrument may be used to investigate physical properties of rock.

SELENIUM AND tellurium are by-products of electrolytic copper refining. Copper anodes contain 0.01-0.2 % Se and up to 0.04 % Te; during electrolysis these deposit as a slime at the bottom of the cell. Such slimes contain 2-15% Se and 0.5-8 % Te, as selenides and tellurides of gold, silver, and copper. The following compounds have been identified in the slimes: (Ag, Au)Te2, Ag2Se, Ag2Te, CuAgSe, Cu2Se, Cu2Te. Anodic slimes from copper electro¬lytic refining are a grayish black powder, minus 200 mesh. When this complex mixture is decomposed in an acid medium, elemental selenium and tellurium can be obtained, while in an alkaline medium, both metals go into solution. Acid leaching The slime is charged in acid digesters of 800-900 lb capacity, heated to 260°C with 78 % H2SO4, for 8-12 hr. During digestion the following reactions take place:

In January of 1969 the United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, through the National Air Pollution Control Administration, published a series of Air Quality Criteria (4'S) and Control Techniques (6,7) for air pollutants in compliance with the 1967 Clean Air Act which will affect the operation of all fuel burning equipment in the very near future. The design of equipment for the future which will use fossil fuels will also be affected. The purpose of this paper is to discuss some of the modifications which might be anticipated in the future for fuel burning equipment. One class of the several air pollutants looked at first by the USDHEW was the sulfur oxides. Other pollutants, such as nitrogen oxides, will be studied and controls for these will supposedly be written in due time. The obvious use of low-sulfur fuels, coal, oil and natural gas is suggested by the Control Technique(6). Conversion to other sources of power, such as nuclear energy and hydropower, is also suggested. The statement is made that since possible hydroelectric sources are limited and nuclear plants are not yet available on a large scale, the changeover to these sources of power will not be overnight. The bulletin (6) suggests that one possible solution in some areas may be the use of low sulfur coals for short periods of time during periods of severe air pollution. A curve showing the effect of this was given in the 1969 April issue of the Power magazine, where A. E. Boyer and F. B. Kaylor of Stone and Webster also described a computer program called DOSAGE which might be used to check weather, temperature, humidity, wind direction and velocity, and sound an alarm when that 0.1% of the time per season is here that requires the use of low-sulfur fuel. In 1956 the Legislature of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania created a "Coal Research Board" in the Department of Mines and Mineral Industries. Over the years through amendments to the original legislation, the scope of authority for research has been expanded from the narrow area of improving and increasing the utilization of coal to covering all aspects of coal technology and any other area of interest which would be of value to the coal industry. In January of 1964, the Board commenced a vigorous program using appropriated funds and funds donated by the coal industry to finance a research program devoted to seeking solutions to the mine drainage problem. A review of published literature on the treatment of mine drainage indicated that much work done up to that point in time concerned only the mechanism of mine drainage formation and theoretical chemistry. Very few applied, developmental, or engineering studies had been devoted to finding practical solutions to the problem of polluted waters being discharged from active or abandoned mines. Projects were therefore undertaken on a wide variety of more utilitarian approaches. This paper will discuss briefly some of the pollution abatement approaches which have been funded by the Coal Research Board of this State, and will describe in some detail a multistage flash evaporator treatment plant now under construction.

Although lateritic deposits have long been a principal source of bauxite and are becoming an increasingly important source of nickel, the problems in the evaluation of such deposits are not generally understood. In the evaluation of lateritic bauxite and nickel deposits, there are many similarities, but there also. are significant differences. It has long been recognized that laterites with commercial concentrations of trivalent metals represent the ultimate in the intense leaching of tropical soils. Any factors which effect-the rate of soil leaching will effect the form of local lateritic concentrations. Although the most intense leaching generally occurs on somewhat elevated areas of gentle relief where there is a free downward flow of rain water, the- effect of local rock structures in effecting varia¬tions in soil metal concentrations has-not been well understood - primarily because the laterite forms a masking blanket over the rocks from which the laterites were derived. All of the-factors which facilitate downward movement of water may effect greater surficial concentrations of trivalent metals. Such features as zones of fracturing, zones of greater rock permeability, and areas of karst topography may, therefore, be responsible for greater leaching. The variations in rock structures and the vagaries of ground water flow pat¬terns impart, to the laterites, rapid lateral and vertical variations in thickness and metal concentrations. The productivity of the underground driller has increased 500-600% during the past 20 years. This increase is not due so much to improved percussion drills as it is to improved drill support equipment and modernization of mining methods, Efforts to mechanize drilling in mining operations were made as early as the late 1800's; and, patents on rock drill manipulating machinery date back to 1906. However, the great rush to mechanization began in the 1950's when the development of trackless mining methods gave mining engineers and equipment designers their first opportunity to create improved operating conditions for the equipment and to match the equipment with these conditions. Accordingly, this paper will summarize the developments of the past 20 years and will attempt a forecast of developments that can be expected during the next few years.

Those of us who have directed our efforts toward the construction of tunnels have long maintained that tunnel construction is more closely an art than it is a science. We have spent time underground with hard-bitten, tobacco chewing shift bosses and superintendents who have made seat-of-the-pants decisions at the face which have been based upon their long experience underground coupled with uncanny intuition. The courage and skill of these men in the performance of their art is legendary. Without question, they have constituted the backbone of the tunnel construction industry. But just as John Henry, the steel driving man, despite his stout heart and dedication to his task, was supplanted by the steam drill, I fear that our tunnel stiff, at least as we have known him, will become an endangered if not extinct species. The reason for this is clearly that tunnel construction is slowly but inexorably making the transition from being an art into being a science, and more and more its performance is requiring the services of scientists as opposed to artists. The tunneling art has been undergoing change for many years, and yet until recently the changes have not been basic. We have improved the way we do the same old things. For example, John Henry would be flabbergasted if he saw the rock drills we use today. He would not have engaged in the legendary drilling contest with one of our modern drills, He would have simply conceded defeat.

The occurrence of acid mine Drainage (AMD) with coal mining has been well documented. (1) Less documentation is available of its association with other types of mining, e.g., copper, gold, zinc, and sulfur. Yet there are many locations in the western states where acid mine drainage is as great a pollution problem as in Appalachia and in some cases, because of the high copper, zinc, and arsenic concentrations, they present an even more difficult problem. Until a few years ago, it was generally believed that the neutralization of acid mine drainage was uneconomical thus, AMD was allowed to discharge freely into our streams. However, the demand for good water finally dictated that the mining industry be included under pollution laws. In 1964 the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania passed a law requiring that all active mine discharges meet a discharge standard of pH 6-9, iron less than 7 mg/1, and the water must have a net alkalinity. Several other states now require active mines to treat AMD. In all but a few cases, lime neutralization, often in conjunction with aeration, has been the treatment method used. The high cost of lime as compared to limestone and the poor quality sludge, (slow settling, large volumes, and low solids content) has stimulated work in the utilization of limestone. This paper reports on the current state-of-the-art of limestone treatment of AMD.
