Due to inefficiencies of the flotation process, significant effort has been recently provided to develop gravity separators for treating ultrafine particles. As a result, several enhanced gravity concentrators have been developed and commercialized. The Altair Centrifugal Jig is an enhanced gravity separator that provides relatively efficient separations on +25 µm size fractions. An experimental program conducted on -600 µm coal found that the Altair Jig reduced the ash content of the 600 x 44 µm from about 30% to 10% with an 86% combustible recovery value. The pulse water pressure, feed volumetric rate and ragging volume were found to be the key operating parameters affecting the separation performances obtained from the process. An extremely low density cut point of 1.54 and an Ep value of 0.08 were indicative of the high process efficiency values achievable by the Altair jig.

Henderson Mine has been transporting molybdenum ore using a rail haulage system for the past 21 years. Due to the age of this system, limited performance, and obsolescence, a capital investment decision was imminent. Henderson used this opportunity to evaluate other transportation methods and continuously improve their mining practices. These efforts resulted in a new mine plan for Henderson, which ensures that Henderson will continue to supply high quality molybdenum into the 21st century. This paper will discuss the dramatic changes taking place at the Henderson Mine as a new production level is mined. These changes include the installation of an underground crushing, conveying, and truck haulage system, as well as increasing the scale of the panel caving process. Each of these topics will be discussed, as will their rock mechanics and material flow implications.

Reconciliation of long-term block model reserves and mine production frequently shows significant discrepancies. This reconciliation can be done comparing the long-term block model reserves against a grade control model (generally, a model based on blast holes or production data). in this paper called an FI factor for tonnages, grade, and ounces; and also it should be done comparing the grade control model to the mill feed (or loaded to heaps) tonnages, grades and ounces (called an F2 factor). The long-term model usually contains blocks with dimensions larger than the size of the selective mining unit (SMU) of the operation. The smoothing effect of an estimator such as kriging will generally result in a grade-tonnage curve that does not match the grade-tonnage curve of the SMU's to be recovered. This problem is partly to blame for the reconciliation discrepancies found. In addition, in-pit perfect selection is impossible. and therefore the grade-tonnage predictions based on blast holes also need to be assessed, considering both unplanned dilution and the errors of estimation of the grade control model. This paper will focus on using conditional simulations to assess the uncertainty of the predicted grade-tonnage curve in terms of minable reserves, and in the framework of long-term mine planning. Quantifying the uncertainty in no uncertain terms is done in conjunction with a popular pit optimizer, which will yield not one, but several possible minable reserves, and therefore a range of possible minable tonnages and grades per pit shell or scheduled phase. This is a step further from the usual sensitivity analyses that are performed for deposit evaluation or development planning. Specifically, this approach takes into account the volume-variance relationship, the selectivity of the mining operation, planned and unplanned dilution. and carries the local uncertainty implicit in grade estimation into the mine design and mine planning phases. The motivation for the approach is discussed through an example, as well as a description of the procedures and steps involved.

PT Freeport's Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia uses a number of 500m long vertical ore passes to transfer ore from the open pit to the mill. The current tonnages moved are in the order of 125 ktpd and this will be increasing to 240 ktpd. This amount of falling rock generates high pressures in the ore bins, when ore feed is terminated the pressure is no longer constrained resulting in back blasting of materials and air up the ore passes. Three methods were tested to try and eliminate or reduce this problem; recirculation of the entrained air, widening of the orepasses and relieving the pressure of the back blast. The final method proved to be the most effective in the short term. As a long term solution the orepasses are currently undergoing widening.

The cost of transportation of industrial minerals is frequently higher than the cost of the product. Where a minc, industrial mineral plant. or customer is served by a single railroad, that single railroad, because of lack of competition, may increase rates and/or provide inadequate service so that the economics of that mine, plant or customer are adversely affected, or so that the level of service precludes satisfactory performance. Transloading of industrial minerals from rail-to-truck or truck-to-rail in order to improve economics and sales of product is not new. However, transloading to reduce freight costs or improve inadequate service caused by a lack of competition in the rail industry, is a relatively new concept brought on by the recent mergers of many of the main line railroads, both in the eastern and western United States. For example, with completion of the Burlington Northern/Santa Fe and the Union Pacific/Southern Pacific mergers, the western United States has only two mainline railroads. The industrial mineral producer, in order to reduce the cost of transportation, or increase the level of service, must evaluate potential transloading opportunities in light of higher prices and reduced service brought on by reduced railroad competition.

Grinding process optimization is an exciting new tool for maximizing the performance of existing mineral processing plants. This paper discusses the methodology of optimization which involves plant sampling, pilot tests, modeling, computer simulation and plant verification. The methodology developed emphasizes the interactions among operating variables and design options. Two example applications demonstrate that AG and SAG optimization provides the basis to increase grinding throughput up to 10 percent. This sys- tem optimization technology has been proven to be very cost effective for grinding plant performance improvement.

INTRODUCTION Mineral ore comminution is generally a feed preparation step for subsequent processing stages. Grinding, the fine product phase of comminution, requires a large capital investment and frequently is the area of maximum usage of power and wear resistant materials. Grinding is most frequently done in rotating drums utilizing loose grinding media, lifted by the rotation of the drum, to break the ores in various combinations of impact, attrition and abrasion to produce the specified product. Grinding media can be the ore itself (autogenous grinding - primary and secondary), natural or manufactured nonmetallic media (pebble milling) or manufactured metallic media - steel rods, steel or iron balls, or a combination of autogenous media and steel balls (SAG milling). This chapter covers rod and ball mills utilizing manufactured metallic grinding media. MILL DESIGN The interior surface of rod and ball mills exposed to pulp and/or grinding media are protected from wear and corrosion by rubber, metallic or a combination of rubber and metallic wear resistant materials. Rod and ball mills essentially draw constant power, thus are well suited for use of synchronous motors with power factor correction capabilities as drive motors. A net of approximately 120 to 130 percent of running torque is required to cascade the charge in these mills. The pull-in torque is about 130 to 140 percent with the pullout torque to keep the motor in-step (in-phase) generally in excess of 150 percent. When rod and ball mill are started across-the-line the starting and pull-in torques result in inrush currents exceeding 600 percent which possibly result in high voltage drops. To deliver 130 percent starting torque to the mill the motor design must take into account the maximum anticipated voltage drop. Motor torque decreases as the decimal fraction of the voltage available squared. E.g., a motor rated 160% starting torque with a 10% system voltage drop will deliver 160% x or 129.6% torque to its output shaft When it is not possible or practical to start a fully loaded synchronous motor across-the-line it is possible to utilize the motor's pull- out torque to start the mill. By using a clutch, normally an air clutch. between the motor and the mill, the motor is brought up to synchronous speed before the clutch is energized. If the motor has an adequate amount (175 or greater) of pull-out torque the pull-out torque starts the mill without major disruptions on the electrical system. Since the energy release at initial cascade of the mill charge is an inverse function of acceleration time, a minimum acceleration time of 6 to 10 seconds or more is recommended to prevent damage to the mill or the mill foundation. Economics at the time of plant design and mill purchase determine the drive to be used. The simpliest drive is the low speed synchronous motor with speeds in the range of 150 to 250 RPM connected to the mill pinionshaft by either an air clutch or flexible coupling. Using a speed reducer between the motor and pinionshaft permits using motors having speeds in the range of 600 to 1000 RPM. In this speed range, if power factor correction is not required induction motors can be used; squirrel cage where there is no restriction on inrush current; slip ring where a slow start and low inrush current is required. Air clutches can also be used to ease starting problems with squirrel cage motors. In some areas of the world induction motors and starters are less expensive than synchronous motors at a sacrifice of motor efficiency and power factor correction. Dual drives, that is two pinions driving one gear mounted on the mill, become economical for ball mills drawing more than 3500 to 4000 horsepower (2600 to 3000 kilowatts). Further developments of the low frequency, low speed synchronous motors with the rotor mounted on the mill shell or an extension of one of the mill trunnions could improve the cost picture for these "gearless drives", making them practical for large ball mills. The percent of critical speed, which is the speed at which the centrifugal force is sufficiently large to cause a small particle to ad- here to the shell liners for the full revolution of the mill is given in mill specifications. About 1.41 kt (45.2 million oz) of gold have been ! produced in South Dakota since 1875. South Dakota's mining laws attempt to strike a balance between economic development and environmental protection. Mining is promoted as an industry while prevention of pollution is required along with reclamation of affected lands to a beneficial use. The South Dakota Department of Environment and Natural Resources' (DENR) system of "one-stop shop- ping" for environmental permits streamlines the permit process. It fosters quick resolutions to compliance problems and helps keep enforcement actions out of the courts. Paha Sapa means "Hills that are Black" in Dakota Sioux. Appearing dark from a distance due to a thick forest of Ponderosa pine, the Black Hills were gold to many people. The exact date that gold was discovered in the Black Hills remains debatable. An inscribed stone tablet found in 1887 near Spearfish recorded these words:

Recent advances in Virtual Reality (VR) technology have resulted in major opportunities to improve safety training of mine workers, supervisors and managers. The hazardous nature of both surface and underground environments limits the type of safety training that can be carried out. VR offers the potential to expose mine personnel to hazardous situations in a safe, highly visual and interactive manner. Customized simulations of mine layouts, dynamic operations and mine environment can be set up and mine personnel can be allowed to move around the virtual mine, making decisions at key points. The consequences of both correct and incorrect decisions can be immediately fed back to the trainee.

The MIDREX® Direct Reduction Process was developed during the 1960s by the Midland-Ross Corporation, which had pioneered shaft furnace technology and stoichiometric gas reforming for use in processing minerals. In 1969, the first MIDREX® Direct Reduction Plant was built in Portland, OR. Since then, 49 additional modules have been sold in 18 countries. For the last ten years, over 60 percent of the world's direct reduced iron has been produced in MIDREX Plants. During the quarter century since commercialization, many technical improvements have been made, including larger shaft furnaces, in-situ reforming, greater heat recovery, improved catalysts, and hot briquetting. Midrex continues to enhance the technology in the areas of economy-of-scale, energy efficiency, alternate fuels, and raw material flexibility.

DOUG HALBE: Our next topic is one that I would think everyone might want to contribute to. I'm sure everyone here has had some experience in this area. If you haven't, I'd suspect you've never really run a mill. This is what we call "Horrible Spill Areas We Had When We Started Up the Plant and How We Fixed Them." Our next speaker has had a really great operating career. He had many years with Newmont in the Carlin area, and now he's executive vice president and chief operating officer of Independence Mining Company: Jim Komadina. I don't have to be nice to the speakers anymore, do I? [laughter] You may wonder why we picked Jim Komadina to give this talk. I was involved many years ago in the start-up of Newmont7s Gold Quarry plant. Jim held quite a responsible position there. I'm not going to say anymore, but I have in the back of my mind this picture of the pump floor and a rowboat and a guy rowing around on the pump floor. [laughter] Jim, was that you? [laughter] JIM KOMADINA: Probably. I wasn't responsible for the design. [laughter] Actually it's amazing. I've seen a lot of these plants and actually had the opportunity to walk around them, so when I say this, "Horrible spills I have seen and done," it's because I've been responsible for more than my fair share of them. But having seen a lot of spills, I will present a little bit of wisdom about how to prevent them.

Eastern Jamaica consists predominantly of non-carbonate rocks reaching elevations of over 2200 m. The area is drained by a well established river network which supplies close to 30% of the sand and gravel used by the building and construction sector. Present high extraction rates and slow rates of replenishment will result in early exhaustion of this source of aggregate. A number of volcanic and carbonate rocks are being examined as a possible source of high quality aggregate which meet the requirements for all types of construction. Preliminary evaluations show a dacitic deposit to be the most suitable source for aggregate use.

Based on the concept of slope stability analysis, a formula for determining an important parameter required in the mathematical model for the prediction of mining subsidence in hilly terrain has been proposed. The slope geometry and soil physical and mechanical properties of the surface natural slope can all be considered in the formula. Incorporation of this new formula into an existing mathematical model provides an integrated approach in studying ground movement in hilly regions.

Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors ("garimpeiros") are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

High-resolution ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was used to image the near-surface extent of two exposed Late Cretaceous kimberlites intruded into lower Permian limestone and dolomite host rocks in northeast Kansas. Six parallel GPR profiles identify the margin of the Randolph 1 kimberlite by the up-bending and termination of limestone reflectors. Five radially intersecting GPR profiles identify the elliptical margin of the Randolph 2 kimberlite by the termination of dolomite reflectors near or below the kimberlite's mushroom shaped cap. These results suggest GPR may augment magnetic methods for the delineation of kimberlites or other forceful intrusions in a layered host rock where thick, conductive soil or shale is not present at the surface.

The benefit of gravity separation in improving total gold recovery in grinding circuits has been outlined in a significant number of papers to date. However, the use of batch centrifugal concentrators (BCC) as an industry standard to extract gold has limited the potential for maximizing gravity recoveries -particularly in coarse gold deposits. This is a reflection of the high upgrade ratios obtained by BCC's which has an inverse relationship with recoveries. Survey work in Australia has indicated that installation of the InLine Pressure Jig as an alternative to the Bee will significantly increase recoveries of gold by gravity and, accordingly, increase total gold recoveries and lower operating costs.

The underground voids that result from mining provide opportunities for deep geologic waste disposal (DGWD). Such disposal could solve many environmental problems. DGWD takes careful planning, technology transfer and true partnership between waste generators and mine/repository operators. The US government is now planning on using specially mined excavations to dispose of radiotoxic and mixed waste. Using the experience gained from the domestic projects that are now in preparation and from foreign repositories that are now in operation, US mines can claim their rightful share of the growing market for DGWD.

New technology for removal of nitrate from low-temperature waters has been developed. Typical results from the first operational-scale system (operating at a metal mine in Montana since January 1996) are over 90 percent nitrate removal at a flow rate of 130 gpm and a water temperature of 12°C. The system also operated successfully at flow rates as high as 300 gpm and water temperatures as low as 2°C. The ABC is advantageous because it is: a) cost-effective to design, construct and operate, and b) effective at cold water temperatures. The system can be designed for a variety of flows, nitrate concentrations, water temperatures and water qualities.

Powder River Basin (PRB) mines were originally built to serve power plants designed specifically for their: coal. Sulfur was the major concern. Btu content and sodium limited the market for some plants. The PRB market has now extended to plants that are converting from other coals because of the Clean Air Act. These new customers are more sensitive to constituents that affect boiler and precipitator performance. At the same time, the prospect of deregulation is forcing power companies to improve cost controls. Kerr-McGee Coal's Jacobs Ranch Mine has responded to the changing marketplace with an expanded coal quality and customer service program.

Division Andina has considered in its long range planning, the exploitation by panel caving method of "Third Panel" mine, which was started its production stage during the second half of 1995. This mine has two production levels, the first is grizzly level and another is L.H.D. level. Both sectors use the same haulage level where mineral is recollected through ore pass. For mineral loading and haulage its use 50ton diesel trucks combined with electro-hydraulic chutes. The automation has permitted what this operation is carrying out with remote control by driver's truck, in concordance to short range planning.
