The McKinley Mine is located in the northwest New Mexico, in McKinley County, approximately 25 miles from Gallup. The mine is operated by The Pittsburg & Midway Coal Mining Co. (P&M), a wholly owned subsidiary of the Chevron Corporation. P&M is headquartered in Englewood, Colorado. Since the McKinley Mine began operations in 1962 a total of 83,391,000 metric tons of coal have been sold through 1990. The 1991 production was approximately 5.000.000 metric tons. The mine operations are contained on a 109.000 square kilometers lease area of which 44.000 square kilometers are on the Navajo Nation. The present customer base consists of four utilities and one industrial account, all of which are located in Arizona. The utility customers are the Arizona Public Service Co. Cholla Station at Joseph City, The Salt River Project. Coronado Generating Station near Joseph City, and The Tucson Electric Company, Irvington Generating Station in Tucson. The industrial customer is the Stone Container Corporation, Snowflake Paper Mill.

The Mount Hope stockwork molybdenum exposit, Eureka County, Nevada, occurs in a small igneous cauldron complex 32 to 38 mybp in age. The deposit is characterized by alteration zones and mineralized shells symmetrically distributed around multiple intrusives. For samples from the 25 000 meters of 1981-82 drilling, an appraisal of error in in-house sample preparation and in commercial assaying has been made. After splitting, drill core is crushed and reduced in volume (8:1 at 10-mesh, 8:1 at 70-mesh, 6:1 at 200-mesh) to supply 25 grams of 200-mesh pulp for replicate analyses. A 0.5 g portion of the pulp is used for dissolution and atomic absorption analyses. Factors which initially generated unacceptable data variances have been minimized by planning, repeat analyses, introduction of standards, and routine monitoring. Assuming that error between replicate assays defines a Gaussian distribution with its average ideally equal to zero, precision (from preparation including core splitting and analysis of 8400 pairs of molybdenum samples) is on the order of + 25%. The error distribution is not biased. Accuracy is approximately 4% lower than absolute as determined by replicate assays of commercially prepared samples.

Investigation of several serious hoisting accidents identified machine brake failure as the most common cause. The recent revelation of this potential hazard has prompted regulatory authorities to require an additional, independent, emergency braking system. As a result of this initiative, a new generation of braking systems have been developed and applied to mine elevators. This paper will discuss the design and testing of an electrical dynamic brake, pneumatic rope brake, and traction sheave brake. The effect of compound braking on hoisting systems equipped with multiple brakes will also be addressed.

Through the early stages of metamorphism, when diffusion is the predominant mineral forming process. there is a tendency toward homogenization of rock units; but there is also zoning resulting from differing primary lithology and structure. Later stages of metamorphism, when infiltration occurs, tend to intensify zoning within the rock mass. The above concepts have been borne out in exploration of talc deposits and skarns. Initially, geologic mapping and soil sampling are directed to understanding mineralogy and petrology. Later, seismic methods are employed to further define lithology in the subsurface. Magnetometer surveys can also define some metamorphic units efficiently. Then, drilling must ensue to confirm lithology and determine extent of mineralization.

A common belief is that autogenous grinding suits itself only to certain oretypes. It is shown that properly designed autogenous grinding can be used even with very difficult ores with energy consumptions which are equal or lower than obtained with rod-ball mill grinding. The basic feature in the design is the large port grate developed by Outokumpu. The scale-up of the mills can be done on the basis of the base mill concept. It enables to compare different mill sizes and types. Simple scale-up equations are presented based on actual mill data and experimental work.

Bituminous sands of the Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta constitute the ore for the surface mining operation at Syncrude Canada Ltd. These sediments represent a complex succession of fluvial, estuarine and marine depositional environments. Grade prediction is realized through a combination of geological interpretation, computer modeling, and reference to past mining experience. Accurate forecasts of feed grade permit reliable predictions of volumes for removal to meet budgeted synthetic crude oil production. This planning facilitates efficient allocation of mining equipment and resources. The feed grade to the Extraction Plant is monitored at various points along the delivery system.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

In 1991, US mine production of barite decreased 3.4%. Barite consumption, sold or used by grinding plants, decreased by 11.7%. Imports also decreased by 15.4% over 1990. World mine production increased I%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. The value of domestically produced barite, f.o.b. mine, increased 3.3% according to the Bureau. The declared value c.i.f. US port of all imported crude barite during 1991 increased from $40.61/t ($36.84/st) in 1990 to $42.35/t ($38.42/st), the Bureau stated. Nevada was the leading producer of barite with 78% of the total, followed by Georgia and Missouri. It is estimated that 75% of the domestically mined barite was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 25% was used in barium chemicals, glass or as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. Of the total barite used by grinding plants and chemical manufacturers, it is estimated that 93% was used in drilling fluids. The remaining 7% was in the non-oilfield sector, including barium chemicals and fillers in paper, plastics and glass. Tonnage consumed in the drilling fluids market decreased due to the lower average rig count during 1990. The average number of rotary rigs operating was 860. That was 14.9% less than the 1990 average of 1010 in the US. Crude barite imports were 138 kt (152,000 st) less than 1990 or 15.4%. Imports accounted for 70% of the (ap¬parent) barite consumed in the US. During 1991, China continued to be the leading exporter of crude barite ore to the US with 85.1 %. India followed with 14.8%. About 97.5% of the imported barite ore was used in the oilfield sector. Ground barite imports decreased from 56.7 to 46.2 kt (62,500 to 51,000 st) 1991. Mexico was a major exporter to the US, accounting for 75.3% of the total ground barite imports. Canada shipped 23.7%, while other countries accounted for less than 1 %, primarily for the nonoilfield market. During 1991, the number of grinding plants supplying the drilling fluids market along the Gulf Coast was reduced from 12 to 10. Baroid Drilling Fluids completed its mining program at the Rossi Mine near Dunphy, NV.

A control system for reducing peak loads on mine conveyor networks is proposed. The system involves continuous monitoring of flows into the conveyor network and section feeders with variable discharge capability. The control strategy uses differences in material transit times from various production units to the transfer points in the network to forecast load levels that will be intersected by the discharge of the controlled feeders over future time intervals. Feeder setpoint adjustments are made to prevent excessive peaks in the combined flows at the transfer points, while maintaining adequate feeder throughflow to avoid production bottlenecks.

Impacts to ground water from mining are being comprehensively regulated in Nevada through specific requirements for design, construction, operation, permitting and closure. This program is the nation's most comprehensive for control of activities at mining operations which have the potential to cause groundwater degradation. It encompasses virtually all types of facilities, including placer, physical separation, flotation, testing, leaching and milling. Minimum design requirements are established by regulation, and must be met by each facility. Site-specific monitoring requirements are established for each facility, and are heavily emphasized. Regulatory and technical requirements and relevant permit conditions are presented and discussed.

Laboratory and pilot tests have shown that the grinding of some aluminas makes two populations appear : agglomerates’ and ultimate crystals’. Classical breakage functions (Size Mass Balance Method) aren't able to describe correctly this kind of grinding. So we have optimized a particular breakage matrix which takes into account the fact that the agglomerates can either be reduced in size or either be blown up to liberate the ultimate crystals. The models which were developed using this breakage matrix are in good agreement with the experimental results of the pilot tests. The industrial breakage functions were estimated from pilot breakage functions, using scale up prediction procedures and plant tests. The agreement between predicted and actual plant performance is excel1ent.A 20 % increase in capacity was predicted to be available by improving the grinding circuit classifier performances.

The discovery that triggered the current gold rush in southeastern Peru was made in about 1975 along the Rio Madre de Dios in Madre de Dios Department (Fig. 1). About 5000 to 10,000 miners (called chichiqueros) were working in the area as of 1990. Placer mining is the principal source of revenue for people living along the Rio Inambari and west of Puerto Maldonado. As in past gold rushes, working and living condition are harsh. Supplies are expensive, and the area has poor access compared with other areas in Peru. Food, fuel and all mining supplies are trucked over dirt roads from Cuzco, a three-to-five-day trip (Fig. 1). Some material also comes from Brazil. Many placers have a similar life cycle, beginning with small-volume mining (surface or underground). At the end of this small-scale mining, the placer is exhausted or it has a sufficient volume of gravel high enough in gold grade to be worked by large-volume methods, which lead to exhaustion of the resource. The level of maturity of a placer can be determined from its gold grade. The amount of gold production from large-volume mining can be predicted, given detailed, cumulative gold-production data on placer deposits during small-scale mining (Bliss et al., 1987). Using this general model, the authors analyzed the placers in the Rio Madre de Dios area. Small-volume mining Most placer mining in the Rio Madre de Dios area is in alluvial deposits either in or bordering the major rivers. Locally, some placer mining is in terrace deposits above the rivers. All minerals (including the subsoil) in Peru belong to the state. However, a mining claim (denuncia) is easily obtained for mineral exploitation. It is separate from property ownership.

I am indeed honored to be the 1991 recipient of the Daniel C. Jackling Award. To be voted this honor by my peers in the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and AIME means more to me than I can truly express. Daniel Jackling's position and prominence in the mining industry first came to my attention in the fall of 1949 when I transferred from Wisconsin Institute of Technology, then a three-year school, to the Missouri School of Mines to complete my last year for a bachelor's degree in mining engineering. I played basketball in the Jackling gym and ran track on the Jackling field. I didn't know a lot about Jackling then, except he was an honored graduate of the school and, obviously, supported the school financially. Over the years, Jackling's name kept coming up. He was a man with a reputation for being a doer, a mining leader who was always a step ahead, a mining engineer who knew how to motivate men in the working place, to organize mining systems, to finance and organize corporations. to open up new, low-grade ore bodies for exploitation. If Jackling were alive today, I would expect he would bean excellent candidate to apply practical rock mechanics to his projects. Looking over the list of Jackling Award recipients, I have known many, have met many personally and had a few who were dear friends that affected my own professional life. Ab Shoemaker, '58, and I consulted at the White Pine Copper Co. on mining problems in the 1960s. We arranged for our visits to the mine to coincide so that we could collaborate on our ideas. I would rent an auto and drive for Ab. He said he was the only mining engineer in the country that had a PhD for a chauffeur. James Boyd, '67, was my mentor as regards the White Pine Rock Mechanics Program that we organized in 1963. Only through Boyd's forsight. leadership, dedication and willingness to spend money on research and development did the Practical Rock Mechnics Program at White Pine succeed. He never wavered in his support to that program or to me personally. Tom Howard, '75, was my predecessor in 1970 as Director of Mining Research for the US Bureau of Mines. When I joined the Bureau in August 1970, he had the research centers up and running. Any successes I may have had with the Bureau of Mines were due in great part to Tom's leadership and organization throughout the 1960s. Gene Cameron, '68, was my teacher at the University of Wisconsin and I remember him fondly. He was the one professor who lectured in a manner that made me welcome going to his classes each day, a truly remarkable educator. If you have come today to listen to me talk about instrumentation, rock properties, stress-strain relationships, rock mechanics theory, etc., you will be disappointed. Large volumes of data have been collected by well qualified theoreticians to define stress-strain conditions in mines. Unfortunately, very little of this data has been used by industry due to the lack of initiative and understanding by the researchers to the true problems of implementation in the industry. I hope my remarks will assist future investigators to work through the maze of operational problems so they will experience the satisfaction of seeing their research used. I fully realize that the Jackling Award is given by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration and is primarily offered for accomplishments in hardrock mining. I have found it impossible to separate hardrock and coal mining when I talk about "Applied Rock Mechanics." There is too much overlap and the same mechanics principles are applied to both. For example, coal mine designs have been applied to salt, trona and potash. Also, the original layout and design of White Pine Copper Mine was based on coal mine designs. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed a graphics-based computer model to assess operator visibility for continuous miners, shuttle cars, and scoops. Using digitized drawings of the machine, the program can analyze visibility for both 5th percentile female and 95th percentile male operators. This model was used to predict 95th percentile male operator visibility for two shuttle car designs. These results were then compared to those obtained from a manual assessment of visibility using the actual shuttle cars. The methods showed good correlation except for several cases which were attributed to imprecise digitization of the machines.

The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is investigating biodegradation of cyanide as a means of decommissioning heap leach operations. Biological oxidation decreased weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide in process solutions1from 50 to 170 ppm down to 0.1 ppm. The tests were conducted both in trickling column reactors, using quartz as the growth surface, and in upflow columns, using activated carbon as the growth surface. In addition, exploratory tests indicated that bacteria will destroy residual cyanide in leached ore. A flowsheet has been proposed for closure of heap leach operations in which the metals processing portion of the plant, possibly the carbon adsorption columns, or a collection pond is used as a bioreactor. The cyanide in the process solution is destroyed in the bioreactor and the treated water is used to rinse residual cyanide from the spent heaps. The water is recycled until the effluent WAD cyanide concentration meets discharge standards.

Materials demands by the advancing process technologies, desire for higher performance and durability, and improved efficiency in combustion processes, such as applications in heat engines, heat exchanges, and batteries have added to the driving force fueling R&D efforts for the development of components with the combined characteristics of metals and non-metals. These new materials involve refined and specialized microstructures that can lead to improvements in the performance characteristics and durability new technological applications require. Fabrication and sintering methods, once believed to be sufficient, alone, have been found to be inadequate in the manufacture of such advanced components. Realization of the importance of the starting powders has led to efforts to produce materials of ultrahigh purity and ultrafine particle size with very narrow particle size distributions. Such powder characteristics are essential for the fabrication of components with high density and with the desired mechanical, electrical, or magnetic properties called for by the specific application. Novel ultrafine and ultrapure powder preparation techniques are discussed and effects of impurities on the powder characteristics, particle size and morphology, sintering behavior and properties of the finished product are elucidated.

The processing of EAF baghouse dusts from both the specialty steel industry and low alloy producers will be reviewed. In addition, the INMETCO process has been modified so as to recover nickel, chromium and iron from many other waste materials such as pickling solutions or filter cakes, spent nickel and chromium plating baths, carbon refractories from pickling tanks, and super alloy wastes including baghouse bags. INMETCO is the only North American company presently capable of recycling nickel-cadmium batteries by high temperature metals recovery. This, along with the details of INMETCO's BDAT Test Program and results performed to pre-agreed standards with the EPA will be discussed.

An efficient recovery of finely divided magnetite particles of 400/500 mesh from a mixture of magnetite/silica particles has been investigated by imposing a delicate balance between centrifugal and surface tensional forces on these particles. The effect of centrifugal force, surface tensional force, density and size of particles on the overall metallurgical efficiency has been examined. A mathematical model based on a momentum balance on the particles at the liquid/liquid interface has been developed. The validity and limitations of the model are discussed in view of the experimental results obtained.

The Coal Mine Belt Capacity Simulator (CMBCS) was originally developed to provide an improved belt capacity simulation through more detailed, flexible and realistic modeling of belt loading. While this model offered improved capacity design for conveyor belts and surge bins, it lacked the capability to simulate some key protection and segregation applications for bunkers. Recently, CMBCS was extended so that these latter bunker applications could be considered. In addition, a fear minor extensions were made to improve the model's flexibility and of efficiency. These various extensions and the steps taken to verify and validate them are described. The associated modifications in the model's input and output as well as the model's current requirements and availability are also discussed.
