INTRODUCTION Run-of-mine (ROM) coal generally falls into two major groups: that from underground mining (continuous mining machines) and that from strip mining. Continuous miners produce a finer product and strip mining a coarser product that is crushed to produce the desired size. Further size reduction depends on the proposed use or uses for the coal. For example, for pulverized coal power plants as a rough general rule, the coal is ground or pulverized to 80% less than 200 mesh (0.075 mm) before it is blown into the boiler furnace as a coal-air suspension. For solvent-refined coal processes, the desired size is about <30 mesh (< 0.60 mm); in fluidized bed uses, the coal is typically < 8, in. (< 1.6 mm); for Lurgi pressure gasifiers, the desired size is 1 to 2% in. (25 to 63 mm). Coal preparation plants typically work with a coarse size fraction of 6X 1/14 in. (150X32 mm). The past decades has shown a steady increase in the tonnage of coal cleaned, 1 but it seems probable that the next decades will produce much wider applica- tion of deep coal cleaning before use and that the stages of crushing and pulverization from ROM coal to end use will be integrated with coal cleaning processes. Since different cleaning processes work better with different ranges of coal size and the degree of cleaning possible is intimately connected with the size of coal, a systems design engineer will need as much information as possible concerning the size distributions produced by different types of machines and how these can be modified by different ways of operating the machines. In general, the following questions will be of concern: 1.What type of crusher or grinder is best, or most satisfactory, for reducing a given feed size and type of coal to a desired product size? Frequently, the desired product is smaller than some nominal size, but with as few fines as possible, or the fraction in some size range has to be as high as possible. 2. How big does the machine have to be for a given throughput rate? 3. How much electrical energy (or its equivalent) is required per ton of product? 4. How does the size distribution vary with change in throughput rate, and is a control scheme necessary or desirable? 5. Can the size distribution be readily varied if desired? 6. What is the optimum way to operate a machine in a given system? This section will emphasize certain general principles which guide us in answering these questions. Mining systems with greater than a 20-foot face advance (deep cut) have become popular due to their increased productivity and safety. The face dust collection system used in many of the mines employing the deep cut systems, incorporates a machine mounted dust collector with either a blowing or exhausting line brattice and a remote control operated continuous miner. In order to characterize and quantify the parameters used to control dust with these systems, the Dust Division conducted studies on four mining sections using continuous miners with deep cut mining systems. On each section, the dust control system incorporated line brattice with a machine mounted dust collector. The remote control made it possible for the continuous mining machine to advance further while permitting the operator to remain under supported roof and away from dust generated during mining. The purpose of these studies was to evaluate the effectiveness of deep cut mining systems using dust collectors to control respirable dust exposure. This paper summarizes the results of the studies conducted. At each mine face workers were sampled to determine their full-shift dust exposure. Additionally, fixed point dust samples were collected at various locations to determine relative concentrations of dust generated from mining. Air quantities were measured at each working place to determine the amount of air delivered to the face area. Evaluations were made by comparing worker exposures to respirable dust samples taken at appropriate locations upstream and downstream of the coal faced being mined. An estimate of the amount of the respirable dust being generated at the face during mining and the amount of respirable dust being removed by the dust collectors was made by balancing the air quantities and the dust concentrations immediately upstream and downstream of the coal face. Results of the studies showed that the dust control systems, were effective for controlling workers exposure to respirable dust. Dust collector efficiencies were determined to be approximately 85 percent. While the dust collectors were effective in removing respirable dust, the success of the systems with line brattice greater than twenty feet from the face, was dependent on the use of the remote control which permitted the continuous miner operator to remain out of the high concentration dust cloud in the working face. Dilution from intake air, combined with the dust collector efficiency, maintained exposure of other section workers below applicable standards.

During the 1980&apos;s. the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) proposed new regulations for the use of diesel equipment in underground coal mines, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recommended that whole diesel exhaust be regarded as "a potential occupational carcinogen", and that reductions in exposure to exhaust pollutants would reduce excess risk. During the same time, the Bureau of Mines tested new emission control technology to minimize diesel emissions. The objectives of this paper are to discuss the major issues regarding diesel exhaust emissions. especially diesel particulate matter (DPM) , and to highlight emission controls that will be available. DPM is a potential health threat because it is respirable in size and is composed of nonvolatile carbon with adsorbed or condensed compounds. These compounds include potentially mutagenic or carcinogenic hydrocarbons such as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and sulfates. DPM contributes to the degradation of air quality in mines with typical mean concentrations ranging from 0.2 to 1.0 mg/m3. In addition to adequate ventilation, control of DPM can be achieved by implemention of improved work practices, regularly scheduled engine maintenance, and emission controls.

A high-strength, industrial-grade membrane filter- cloth capable of high flow rates and sub-micrometric particle retention has been developed. A filtration system using this filter- combined with special filtration techniques and using tubular-filters makes possible the filtration of many difficult-to-jilter slurries. Small, discrete, slowly-settling particles are formed into filter cakes that when pulsed of the membrane filter cloth do not redisperse but settle rapidly to form a dense filter under- flow. A positive separation of solids from liquids is obtained.

In April 1990, the Homestake Gold Mine embarked on a five year, $US 23 million underground drifting and drilling program to explore promising ore targets north of the current mine. This paper describes the ventilation and air-conditioning system that was installed for the 4m x 4m x 5.2 km (ultimately) drift, which is being driven at about 8m per day in 48OC (118.5 F) crystalline rock. Design parameters are described first. Differences in South African, Canadian and U.S. drift ventilation and civil tunneling techniques proved interesting. Details are then given on equipment selection, installation and performance. Costs are included. Special note is made of safety considerations for a long, dead-end drift.

In response to concerns over the impact of mining on the hydrologic balance at the Navajo Mine in northwestern New Mexico, a recharge study was conducted using a chloride mass- balance approach. Impact of mining on annual recharge volume was assessed by comparing pre- and post-mining recharge values. The mean regional recharge rate for reclaimed ground (weighted by acreage) is 1.02 mm/a (0.04 in. per year) or twice that for undisturbed ground, 05 mm/a (0.02 in. per year). Comparison of regional recharge volumes for identical areas shows mining increases recharge 92%. The increase is only 80% if no closed depressions are constructed during reclamation. However, the increased rates are so low that there should be no detrimental impact on regional water resources. The chloride method proved useful at Navajo Mine and should succeed at others surface coal mines as well.

In 1988 a major exploration program was undertaken to determine the characteristics of the rock and soil for a 7.6 m diameter sea outfall tunnel beneath Boston Harbor out into Massachusetts Bay. The diffuser discharge location had been mandated by the EPA to a 10 sq. km area of seafloor connected to the proposed Deer Island Treatment Facility by a 14.5 km tunnel corridor. Geophysical surveys, deep rock borings, and laboratory testing, provided the information for the conceptual design. The program identified the range in material types and parameters to prove feasibility of a TBM driven tunnel and to locate the optimum alignment and depth.

Designing an underground nuclear waste repository is a complex process. Although many decisions are involved before the design is complete, the first three--what the target horizon is, what the underground boundary is, and where the entry point will be located--are important because they establish the basis for the entire repository design. Even more important than these decisions, however, is the data on which the decisions are based. Because the current data are limited, an aggressive data gathering program is needed during the next design phase to augment information about the intricate interplay among all facets of the repository design and the geologic medium in which the proposed repository is to be developed. Although unique to modern engineering enterprises, the challenges involved in designing a repository in the unsaturated zone are within current technology and engineering practices.

Veins containing silver and gold values, with some associated values in copper, lead, and zinc, were discovered in 1890 by Will Kirwin in what was later designated the Kirwin mining district situated on the North Fork of the Wood River, about 56 km (35 miles) west of Meeteetse. (See Fig. I.) After considerable prospecting activity, including the driving of several short adits on veins, most of theclaims in the district were consolidated into two ownerships. One was held by the Galena Ridge Mining Co. which was organized on Nov. 18, 1902. The other was held by the Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. which was organized on Mar. 23, 1903. During the period from 1903 to 1907 inclusive, the two companies continued exploration on veins in their respective areas. The major exploration-development activity for the Galena Ridge Mining Co. was the driving of the Galena Ridge crosscut adit for 709 m (2327 ft), to cut veins at depth which had been explored by short adits high on Galena Ridge. Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. concentrated their work on the Bryan and Pickwick veins. Neither of the companies found ore that was rich enough to sustain profitable operations in that remote locality. Most of the major exploration and development activities were stopped in late 1907. A major snowslide in February 1907 killed three people and destroyed several buildings and may have contributed to discouragement in the area. From 1908 to the early 1920s, only minor exploration work was done. Galena Ridge Mining Co. was dissolved Aug. 5, 1922, and Shoshone Mountain Mining Co. was dissolved on Mar. 23, 1923.

Exploration for non-fuel minerals has declined since 1988 as recessionary pressures have slowed growth in the industrialized economies. By most accounts, however, 1990 expenditures were still significantly greater than the low levels experienced in the mid-1980s. The Persian Gulf crisis introduced instability in energy prices and greater uncertainty into an already cloudy economic picture. As 1990 unfolded, the US savings and loan problems spread to the commercial banking system, leading to the failure of several major US commercial banks. The Japanese stock market also suffered significant losses as Japan&apos;s Central Bank raised interest rates. The Soviet Union experienced shortages of food and other basic items. Its government faces resistance to changes leading to a market economy. Individual Soviet republics also are seeking more control of their own destiny. The cost of German reunification, in terms of the capital required to bring the east&apos;s infrastructure and industrial base to western standards, also appears to have been underestimated.

The desire for dry passageways promotes the NATM as it provides a final support system most suitable for the installation of a waterproofing membrane. Waterproofing during construction is a cost effective way to enhance safety and function as well as increasing the life of an underground structure. The NATM approach utilizes the surrounding mass as an integral element of the "ringlike" support system. At the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Lehigh Tunnel No. 2 various rock classifications were determined to require support measures ranging from 2 to 12 inches of shotcrete along with spiling, wire mesh, deformed bar, lattice girders and rock bolts as needed. Field instrumentation and monitoring programmes are a key factor for the success of the NATM. When the support "shell" stabilizes smoothing shotcrete, waterproofing and a final liner can be placed.

The Buchans mining district is located roughly at the center of the island of Newfoundland and contains some 18 separate mineral deposits. The first of these deposits was discovered in 1905, the latest discovery having been made in 1979. To the present (1983), some 16 Mt (17.7 million st) grading 1.33% Cu, 7.5% Pb, 14.5% Zn, 115 g/ t (3.7 oz per ton) Ag, and 1.4 g/t (0.04 oz per ton) Au have been mined. Mining operations are now largely terminated, but a few hundred thousand tons of economically marginal reserves may be mined in a salvage operation. The Geological Association of Canada Special Paper No. 22, "The Buchans Orebodies, 50 years of Mining and Exploration," contains papers which describe the history, geology, and the application of evolving geological concepts in exploration. Papers by Neary, Swanson, and Thurlow and Swanson in that volume are topical to the present discussion. Successful exploration techniques at Buchans included physical prospecting, utilization of the state-of-the-art geophysical techniques, saturation diamond drilling which was made possible by the high gross value of the existing ore, and, since 1955, diamond drilling directed by fairly well understood geological parameters. The record of discovery started in 1905 when the Buchans River deposit was found by Matty Mitchell, a prospector employed by the Anglo- Newfoundland Development Co., a British company which owned mineral rights over a very large area in the Red Indian Lake-Exploits River drainage system.

The US coal industry has been using continuous room-and-pillar mining (CRPM) machines for more than 30 years for longwall development. This equipment has also been used for production mining in areas that are not appropriate for longwall mining. From 1977 to 1987, the portion of annual US production mined by continuous miner (CM) sections grew slightly from 65% to 70%. Over this time, mine operators and manufacturers have made some advances to attain the full production potential of this method. This is evidenced by the fact that average tons per eight hour shift for continuous miners in the US grew from 180 t (200 st) in 1977 to 431 t (475 st) in 1987. The authors (1990) reported that the increase in productivity was due to several factors: • a drop in prices; • a more mature workforce; • union stability and incentive programs; •procedural improvements; and •technological advances. The authors estimated that about one-third of the increased production came from the first three and other unaccounted for factors and one-third each for the last two. Even though improvements were considerable, continuous miner capacity is much higher than 431 t/shift (475 st per shift). For example, the machinery is capable of mining more than 9 t (10 st) per machine for the 6.5 available hours per shift or 3.5 kt (3900 st). However, this has never been attained on development. Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

The Yakobi nickel-copper deposit is located essentially at tidewater in the east-central part of Yakobi Island, about 16 1 airline km (100 airline miles) west of Juneau, and can be reached by float plane and boat from Juneau and Sitka. The fishing village of Pelican, population 400, is situated 14.5 km (9 miles) to the east. An unimproved road, approximately 4 km (2.5 miles) long, connects a dock site at Lisianski Strait with the main part of the deposit known as the Basin Area (Fig. I). Other mineral occurrences are known as the Takanis, Flapjack, and Beach Areas. Another smaller nickel-copper deposit is located about 32 km (20 miles) to the south on Western Chichagof Island and is known as the Mirror Harbor nickel-copper deposit. The original discovery of the Yakobi deposit was made by S.H.P. Vevelstad about 1920 and a 47.5-m (156-ft) long adit was driven on the southwest side of the deposit in the Basin Area. The deposit was examined by J.R. Van Fleet of Union Carbide in 1930 and by J.G. Fairchild in September 1931. Stanley and Yates of the International Nickel Co. of Canada (Inco) visited the property in August or September 1937. In 1942, the controlling interest in the deposit, covered by 124 unpatented claims, was said to be held by Vevelstad and associates

The Afton copper-gold mine is located in the southern interior of British Columbia, 16 km (10 miles) west of Kamloops and 257 km (160 miles) northeast of Vancouver. &apos;An aerial view of the property in 1976 is shown in Fig. 1. The Afton copper-gold ore body [27 Mt (30 million tons)] of open pit ore with a grade of 1.0% copper, 0.46 g/t (0.01 6 oz per ton) gold, and 4.1 g/t (0.12 oz per ton) silver, occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The geological setting of the Afton ore body is described by Carr and Reed (1976). Rocks of the Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic eras outcrop in the vicinity of Kamloops, but the unit with the greatest economic significance is the Upper Triassic Nicola volcanic group and its subvolcanic dioritic intrusion, the Iron Mask pluton. The Afton ore body occurs at the northwesternextremity of the Iron Mask pluton immediately south of a deep graben structure that developed in post-Triassic time (Coast Mountains orogeny) and which was the focus of vigorous sedimentation and volcansim in Tertiary times. The Iron Mask pluton is a lenticular composite intrusion approximately 14.5 km (9 miles) in length in a northwesterly direction. The petrography of the Iron Mask pluton ranges from picrite and serpentinite to latite porphyry. Outcrops of individual petrographic units are generally elongate in a northwesterly direction parallel to the axis of the pluton. The Iron Mask pluton represents the moderately slowly cooled core of an oceanic fissure volcano which built up an island flanked by shallow-water sediments including reef knolls and which, during its later stages, intruded its own volcanic pile.

Noise control is an important consideration in the design and operation of coal preparation plants. It is essential to understand and control noise sources to provide a safe environment for operating personnel. The average noise exposure levels in a typical coal preparation plant generally range between 95 and 100 db. An operator should not be exposed to noise levels of this magnitude for more than 4 and 2 hr, respectively, according to MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations. The major noise sources in a coal preparation plant include noise from impacting the inside surfaces of steel chutes, vibrating screens, coal crushers, pumps, motors, fans, and blowers. The magnitude of noise varies considerably from one situation to another. NOISE EXPOSURE IN COAL PREPARATION PLANTS Noise regulations established by the Occupational Safety and Health administration (OSHA) are accepted by MSHA relative to caal preparation plants. Fig. 14-43 shows a graph of the time of noise exposure in hours per day to which a worker can be exposed for each A-weighted sound level. According to this graph, a worker is permitted to spend 8 hr in a 90-db noise environment, but that time must be halved when the A-weighted sound level increases 5 db. The noise dosage a worker receives is determined by the ratio of the length of time the worker spends in a particular noise environment divided by the length of time he is permitted to spend in that environment. If the worker is exposed to several different sound levels, his total dosage would be the sum of each of the individual dosages. The equation for determining the dosage is: where C is the actual duration of exposure at a given steady state noise level and T is the noise exposure limit for the level present during the time C According to MSHA regulations, the dosage, D, should not exceed one (1) for any worker for a full day of work. As an example of typical plant noise levels, vibratory screens and crushers emanate noise levels in excess of 90 db at a distance of 3 ft (0.9 m) with no material flow. Golden Sunlight Mines Inc. operates an open-pit gold mine and cyanidation plant about 11km (7 miles) northeast of Whitehall, MT. Golden Sunlight is a subsidiary of Placer Dome US Inc. Mining is accomplished with conventional open pit drilling, blasting and hauling methods. The mining rate is about 102 kt/d (113,000 stpd). Gold occurs as fine-grained disseminations in a pipe-shaped breccia and in immediately adjacent country rock. The ore body is low grade, averaging 2 g/t (0.059 oz per st) of gold. The metallurgical plant uses conventional carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology. Daily throughput averages 6.5 kt (7000 st). Recoveries are enhanced through a sand tailing retreatment facility while a preaeration process reduces operating costs. The low grade ore dictates that maximum mill throughput at the desired grind size be maintained. Therefore, in October 1988, an Armco Autometrics (now Denver Autometrics) particle size monitor (PSM) 400 was commissioned. The PSM 400 is an on-line instrument. It measures particle size and percent solids in a slurry stream. The PSM pulls its own sample, deareates the sample and passes it through diametrically opposed ultrasonic sensors. The unit uses ultrasonic sound to measure the deareated slurry stream&apos;s particle size and percent solids.

Cleaning of three coals from the eastern US was tested by five selective agglomeration processes and one selective flocculation process. The coals and processes are described, and the results are reported and compared. Two of the processes, which ground the coal to the finest volume mean diameter, met the stringent test program quality specifications.

The Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration has compiled a number of exploration discovery case histories. This section in Volume 3 of the series describes the case histories of deposits found in layered rocks. Metallic and nonmetallic ore deposits described in this section include diverse minerals such as copper-nickel sulfides and carbonate-controlled base metals. Other case history compilations include epithermal precious metal deposits and porphyry systems. The importance of ores in layered rocks justifies their inclusion in a case history compilation. Mineral deposits occurring in layered rocks form an economically important class of ores. For example, most sulfide nickel ores are mined from basic layered intrusive rocks. Although the geologic setting is completely different from economic nickel sulfide concentrations, most barite produced also comes from stratiform and strata-bound ores. Zinc and lead ores importantly occur in beds in carbonate host rocks. Gold and other heavy minerals are concentrated in placer deposits. Indeed, the world&apos;s largest gold deposit, the Witwatersrand, is a fossil placer.
