Laboratory test work, pilot plant testing and plant experience with wet, fine-mesh screens are discussed. High-frequency, low-amplitude, fine-mesh, wet screens were installed on the 6th cleaner concentrate stream. These screens produce a 60% oversize recovery split of the molybdenite concentrate that is of leached equivalent quality. The undersize stream is leached with hot ferric chloride to remove lead and copper contaminants before roasting or shipment to sulfide customers. This plant modification is a good example of using existing technology in an unconventional flow sheet to yield significant cost savings.

The dissociation (ionisation) constant of hydrogen cyanide, pKa(HCN), has been measured by high precision glass electrode potentiometric titrations in saline solutions containing up to 5 mol/L sodium chloride. The dissociation constant of water that is necessary for the calculation of pKa(HCN) has also been measured. In saline solution, and in contrast to literature values, pKa(HCN) changes considerably at both high and low ionic strengths as a result of changes in activity coefficients. In addition an equation is presented, using literature data, that describes the variation of pKa(HCN) with temperature up to 150°C. The significance of the changes in pKa(HCN) for optimising the pH of alkaline cyanide gold recovery streams is briefly discussed.

Gold Fields Operating Co.-Chimney Creek has conducted numerous ore reserve modeling studies In order to optimize the estimates of the gold grades and tonnage distributions. Improved models continue to be produced for the major pits which Increase confidence levels required by Gold Fields management and provide the basis for more accurate long and intermediate term mine planning. Various kriging and non-kriging estimation techniques are used at Gold Fields -Chimney Creek Mine. This paper reviews the modeling histories and, current procedures used to construct these models with particular emphasis on the North Pit deposit.

Operating uranium mill tailings containment and mill decommissioning activities are regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) through numerous regulatory mechanisms. Reduction of radon emissions from tailings disposal areas, remedial actions to return groundwater to baseline constituent concentrations, and 200-to 1,000-year stabilization of tailings are major focus areas of regulation. The cumulative economic impact and uncertainty associated with regulation are very significant and will hinder future development of uranium milling facilities.

In an effort to improve flotation efficiency of the domestic minerals industry, the US Bureau of Mines conducted research to measure the improvement provided by fine bubbles on the flotation of fine-sized particles (minus 20- µm, minus 625 mesh). The turbulent velocity distributions of the fluid within the flotation cell were measured as a function of time and position and used to increase the precision of a fine-particle, turbulent-flotation model. For the mineral system tested, improved flotation response was obtained in the laboratory testing with small bubbles and intense agitation. These results matched the model's predicted response.

To detect the place and range of fire is one of the key technologies in the extinction of coal mine underground fire. A fire-prevention and extinction research team of Shanxi Mining College have successfully carried out a program detecting the place of fire with radon. In the past four years the authers have done the detecting work in several mines in Shanxi Province, such as Gujao, Xuangang Louan and Ningwu. The place and scope and the trend of underground fire of coal mine can be now exactly estimated. The data and information from detecting provide a reliable basis for drawing up the scheme to extinguish underground fire and extract mineral coal securely. The principle and method of fire detecting based on radon on surface, the data processing and analysis are discussed in this paper.

A hybrid boundary element-finite element model was formulated to model roof-bolt reinforcement of roof strata with bedding planes. This model was used to analyze the stress distribution around a rectangular opening, with variables such as opening width-height ratio, number of bolts installed, number1 location of bedding planes, in-situ stresses, etc. The most critical areas are identified, and the number and length of roof bolt required are then determined. Two case examples are illustrated.

The surface heat transfer coefficient is measure of the rate of heat transfer from exposed rock surfaces to the ventilating air. Knowledge of its value is of particular importance to accurately simulate the early stages of rock cooling after the opening of an excavation. A number of theoretical formulae for the calculation of the coefficient are available for use in mine climate simulation. However, direct determination by in situ measurement is preferred. Instrumentation, which has been developed for in situ mine measurement, and experimental procedures involving measurement at varying air velocities, are described. In a major study covering four Australian underground mines, the system has been used to determine surface heat transfer coefficients. A direct relationship was clearly established between the measured surface heat transfer coefficient and air velocity. Comparison is made between experimental results and those previously measured or calculated by others. The relationship established can be described by an equation and holds for air velocities above 0.4 mls. The derived relationship was con- firmed at all mines tested and is independent of geology and tunnel dimensions found in modern mines.

Recent studies conducted at Virginia Tech have shown that ultrafine coal particles can be selectively coagulated and separated from mineral matter without the use of traditional agglomerants or flocculating agents. This technique utilizes hydrophobic interaction forces to induce coagulation of coal particles, while particles of mineral matter are dispersed using pH control. After selective coagulation, the coal coagula can be recovered by a sedimentation technique. In the present work, factors such as pH, particle size, and solids concentration have been examined. A wide range of coal samples have been successfully upgraded using this technique.

The success of steep slope (>20°) contour mining depends on many factors. Most important is the selection of the mining method that best suits the premining site conditions environmentally and economically. These conditions can be divided into three categories: • Geometric conditions - machine limitations, slope stability restrictions, erosion capacity; • Physical conditions - material properties, rock strengths, ability to dig, driving surfaces; and • Chemical conditions - acid-base relationships, blending or selective placement of overburden. This article incorporates these conditions by conceptually modeling compliance-oriented contour mining methods, particularly haulback methods, using the combined front-end loader (FEL)/ truck, tractor/scraper, and FEL-truck and scraper. Engineering analyses, including machine selection, sequencing, ease of varying production rates, slope requirements (for stability and running surfaces) and drainage requirements can be performed after the geometric constraints dictated by in situ conditions and regulatory requirements have been conceptualized. Once all generalized geometries have been established, reduction to idealized, three-dimensional views is achieved. These are then reduced to two-dimensional symbolic models, mainly plan views but also elevations and sections. Equipment activities and operations are then conveniently overlayed. Without this simple, two-dimensional reduction, technology transfer remains awkward and non-analytical.

As a result of recommendations made in the 1988 Report of the Mine Safety and Health Administration Advisory Committee on Standards and Regulations for Diesel-Powered Equipment in Underground Coal Mines, the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) initiated a program to develop and test a diesel particulate sampling device. The sampling device employed the principles of inertial impaction to separate respirable dust into two fractions; one fraction containing particulate material having an aerodynamic equivalent diameter equal to, or greater than, 1.0 micrometer, and the other fraction containing particulate material having an aerodynamic equivalent diameter less than 1.0 micrometer. The design criteria were based on data which showed that virtually all of the diesel particulate material and very little of the mine generated dust was less than 1.0 micrometer in size. The instrument was tested in underground dieselized coal mines and in the laboratory. Comparative measurements were obtained with the MSHA designed impactor sampler, a University of Minnesota (UM) designed impactor sampler and MSHA's standard respirable coal mine dust sampler. Simultaneous measurements were also obtained with five of the MSHA and five of the UM designed impactor samplers to investigate between sampler precision. The paper discusses the design differences between the MSHA and UM impactor samplers, the precision of replicate measurement obtained with both instruments and compares measurements obtained with the respective samplers of the sub- and supermicron fractions of the respirable material.

One of the Northwest Mining Association's guide-lines is: "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten." Another way of saying this is, simply, "when the road curves, don't refuse to turn." Our industry has been roundly criticized for living in the old political world, and, I believe, justifiably so. Until about 20 years ago, members of both houses of Congress deferred to specialists among their members for mining legislation. This was true for all public lands and natural resource issues, and were referred to as the mining bloc, or the timber bloc, or the ranching bloc. We felt safe, and to a large degree, were safe in the sense that western members of the US House of Representatives and of the US Senate understood the need for multiple use of public lands, and the need for the natural resources they supply. They also knew what it takes to stay in business and how to create the economic atmosphere that encourages private industry to find and provide the natural resources. Almost daily, members of our industry bemoan the destructive effects that current regulations, let alone new proposals, are having on American industry. And, there are some intriguing aspects for us to ponder. First, the specific complaint about the government is not regulation per se, but rather that the rules or policies don't make sense. We recognize that few understand our industry, but we have assumed that the government will rely on people experienced and knowledgeable in the area being brought under government controls. There was a time that this assumption was valid, but it is no longer true since we have entered the era of the professional regulator. Much like the MBA who believes that a professional manager can manage anywhere, the new breed of regulator sincerely believes that process is the key to developing effective regulations or programs. They reason the process virtually assures that all the pertinent facts will inevitably come to light and, after receiving appropriate considerations, will result in the proper decision being reached and implemented. Unfortunately, following the process also allows politics to play a new and greater role than ever before, since information based on what can only be called weird-science can now be presented to the professional regulator and accepted as fact. Regulators do not have the background to question the basic tenets of the conclusion being presented to them. To add insult to injury, testimony from people in the industry involved, intended to set the record straight, is too easily discounted as being merely self-serving. A second aspect is that the question of why the associations aren't doing more to stop poorly conceived legislative and regulatory proposals, or to counter the ever-increasing influence of the selfappointed public interest groups is being increasingly discussed. This is occurring despite the fact that there is a higher level of involvement and closer cooperation between the various associations than ever before. This raises a most important question: where are we going wrong? In the last 20 years or so, major changes have taken place. A new philosophy, taking advantage of the public's recognition of need to protect our environment, has swept through the nation, resulting in a whole new body of law enacted to assure environmental protection. We all acknowledge the need to prevent undue degradation during the course of mineral development, and we all consider ourselves to be responsible stewards of the land, because we live and work in the outdoors and know the importance of environmental protection. The changes in the federal statutes apply now to every aspect of mineral discovery, development, and production, and assure adequate reclamation of lands when we are done. Along with the positive changes, are a constant barrage of attempts to stop public land use, or stop mining, or stop any new economic development, ostensibly to "protect the environment," but often reflecting a hidden agenda of social reform. These types of extreme, irrational, and just plain impossible proposals are everyday occurrences, but we have not geared up to challenge all the proposals which could end mining. Instead, we did what we always had done. The road turned, but we didn't. And we wondered why those who had always protected mining weren't doing their job, and why we were having such limited success in reining in the regulators. The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated germanium and gallium extraction from an ore containing 0.089% Ge and 0.036% Ga. While previous researchers concluded that a reducing agent such as 502 is needed to extract germanium and gallium from such ore, this research showed that high extractions (87% Ge, 97% Ga) were possible using sulfuric acid alone, if the acid concentration were properly controlled. This control was achieved using a two-stage counter-current leach circuit. Microprobe analyses revealed that the non-extracted germanium is in solid solution with quartz, and therefore cannot be leached with 502 or sulfuric acid.

The gold ores in the Jerritt Canyon district have been recognized as refractory since they were first encountered by FMC geologists in 1976. Upon obtaining managing rights as joint venture partner, Freeport McMoRan Inc. developed an operating plan featuring carbon-in-leach gold recovery techniques for the oxide portion of the ores and a patented sulphide oxidation step followed by chlorination for treating the organic carbon constituents of the refractory ores prior to CIL gold recovery. The plant was successfully started up in 1981 with the first gold poured on July 4, 1981. Initial plant throughput was designed to be 2495 MTPD (2750 STPD) total through the dual processing trains.

The Ertsberg East discovery was announced by Freeport in 1979 with proven geological reserves of 45 Mt (49.6 million tons) with a grade of 2.65% copper and recoverable gold values. This recently discovered deposit is one of a cluster of skarn-type copper occurrences found within the limits of Freeport Indonesia's mining con- cession at an elevation of about 3600 m (12,000 ft) in the extremely rugged Jaya Wijaya Mountains of Irian Jaya, the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea. The Ertsberg East lies about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) east of the Ertsberg ore body, which is also known by the Indonesian name "Gunung Bijih" or "ore mountain." For general background, the original Ertsberg ore body was first discovered by the Dutch geologist Jacques Dozy in 1938 while on a mountain climbing expedition. It was mapped and sampled by Forbes Wilson and Del Flint after a two-week harrowing trek into the mountains from the coastal swamps. A drilling program in 1967- 1968 established that the Ertsberg was a viable mining venture, containing approximately 33 Mt (36.4 million tons) of skarn-type copper ore. The deposit averaged 2.5% copper, with significant values in gold and silver. The first shipment of copper concentrates was made in December 1972, following a capital investment of $200 million. Following the routine production of ore from this deposit, it became necessary to consider additional sources of ore to extend the life of the mining operation. An exploration program was thus started with the initial objective of finding shallow or surface ores which could be blended with the material being mined at Ertsberg. Project geologist Frank Nelson was transferred from Freeport Exploration Co. to the Freeport Indonesia organization at the Ertsberg mine. However, the exploration work was the functional responsibility of Freeport Exploration. Del Flint had overall responsibility for the program from the Reno headquarters office and provided liaison with management in the USA and Indonesia.

The need for wartime supplies of uranium for the Manhattan Project prompted a 1944 study of uranium in South Africa. Uraninite had been reported by R.A. Cooper in 1923 in a Witwatersrand heavy- mineral concentrate, and the search for uranium, therefore, included the district's 30 operating mills. The method of investigation was simple: take bulk concentrate samples from the Wifley tables and determine their mineralogy. Samples were taken on a daily basis, although weekly composites also were taken of some mills. In 1944, most mills had simple gravity circuits and produced (I) a gravity concentrate, and (2) an all-slime [-75 pm (-200 mesh)] product. The tonnage throughput was known, and from that, head assays could be calculated. Concentrate samples were sent to the United States for chemical analyses. A Geiger counter set up in a Johannesburg hotel room provided preliminary data. The early data showed uraninite to be widespread. Microscopic, mineragraphic, and siezing tests were all under- taken in Johannesburg. Ultimately, tests led to a high grade (+90%) uraninite concentrate. Platinum and other heavies were the impurities. In seven months, the investigations had reached the stage where it was possible to forecast an annual production of 5.4 to 7.3 kt (6,000 to 8,000 st) of U3O8. The estimate is still realistic. Cyprus Metals' Sierrita mine is located in the Pima Mining District, Pima County, Arizona (Fig. 1), which is one of the largest known porphyry copper districts. The ore body is part of a large mineralized system that includes Cyprus' adjoining Esperanza mine. The copper and molybdenum grades being mined at Sierrita make it one of the two lowest grade porphyry copper mines in the world Mineral production from the district was first recorded in 1876. Copper from replacement deposits in carbonate rocks and copper¬-lead-zinc from veins in volcanic rocks were mined from several deposits. However, it was not until 1957 that the district commenced to become a major copper producer with the beginning of production from the Pima mine, which was the first open pit operation. Since that time, seven other open pit mines have come into production. Because of the variable copper prices and high operating costs, not all of the mines are operating today. A map of certain outcrops, plutons, and open pits, as well as older underground mining operations, in the Pima district is shown in Fig. 2.

On behalf of my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, I would like to add my appreciation that all of you could be here today. Previous dust symposia over the years have proved the value of close cooperation among universities, government agencies, and professional societies in advancing knowledge of dust research and development in the interest of miners and the industry. I'll just comment briefly on MSHA's part of the overall effort by all parties to control miners' exposure to respirable coal dust and other airborne dusts. As you know, our agency's congressional mandate is to do what is necessary to assure that miners will have safe and healthful workplaces. In the area of coal mine health, this has meant joining with the mining community in a continuous campaign to keep respirable dust and quartz levels below applicable standards to prevent or reduce disabling coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis arising from excessive exposure to respirable quartz. Currently, our agency is processing about 120,000 coal dust samples taken by MSHA and company people during the year and about 8,000 samples taken from metal and nonmetal mining operations. Our dust program, like other MSHA programs, has benefited from increased computerization of records. The attack on CWP has had the highest priority of government and industry. The goal has been to sharply reduce social costs of suffering victims and their families as well as the associated future payments under the black lung benefits program. During the 1989 fiscal year, about 104,000 former miners received about one and a half billion dollars in benefits. Since the program began, nearly 25 billion dollars have been paid out. Much progress has been made in lowering dust levels in coal mines since the standard of two milligrams per meter of air was established in 1972. Before that time, there was a 4-to-10-percent probability of a miner developing coal workers' pneumoconiosis at typical pre-1972 exposure levels. However, under the maximum respirable dust levels allowed today, this probability has been reduced to about 1 percent. Since average dust levels are lower today, we can expect fewer miners to develop CWP in the future. Out goal continues to be elimination of both coal workers' pneumoconiosis and silicosis in both coal and nonmetal mining. In 1985, MSHA revised its coal mine quartz policy to allow mine operators to submit dust samples used in setting the quartz standard. Previously, only single MSHA samples were used. Even though less than half of the mine operators have taken advantage of this change, it has provided a larger population of samples for analysis then before. Also the policy allows operations that are on a reduced quartz standard to have the standard reviewed every six months. In underground coal mining, the job of roof bolter typically has higher than normal exposures to quartz. About 45 percent of respirable dust samples from roof bolting operations contain more than 5 percent quartz and therefore are put on a reduced quartz standard. One objective of the policy revision was to improve miners' health by follow-up monitoring, and this is being done with roof bolting jobs. MSHA studies of surface coal mining operations have provided data showing that bulldozer operators and highwall rotary drill operators often have high exposure to quartz dust, and our agency is directing enforcement efforts to reducing this hazard. The use of water is still the most effective and economical means for dust control in underground coal mines today along with dilution by the ventilation current. Studies have shown that the dust capturing capacity of water is a result of a balance of many intermolecular forces. Surfactants are known to reduce such forces by affecting both the surface tension of the liquid and its interfacial tension against a solid. Surfactants can be added to the water sprays to facilitate the dust capturing capacity. A laboratory scale model has been developed in which surfactants were added to the spraying water and preliminary data indicates positive results.

Concentrations of minerals between 3.5 and 5 specific gravity such as ilmenite, rutile and zircon in large accumulations of sand constitute "heavy mineral" placers. Two fundamentally different modes of formation characterize "trap" and "bed" placer variants. Smaller and generally higher grade trap placers form during sediment erosion or reworking. Because of their smaller size, they rarely yield economic heavy mineral deposits. They become economic, either if they contain more valuable "heavies" such as gold, or, if they occur within or near much larger but lower grade bed placers. Bed placers form during sediment accumulation episodes in any environment and lithofacies where mineral supply and fluid dynamics are favorable. Three heavy mineral deposits are discussed to illustrate bed placer geology and how trap placers occur with and relate to them.
