A study was performed on selective flocculation and dispersion for ultrafine coal cleaning. A totally hydrophobic polymer, FR-7A, was employed as the selective flocculent for coal, sodium metaphosphate (SMP) as the general dispersant for shale and a synthetic polymeric product, polyacrylic acid-xanthate (PAAX), as the selective dispersant for pyrite. In the adsorption tests, nephelometry and spectrophotometry were employed for determining the concentration of FR-7A and PAAX in the solutions respectively. The adsorption tests indicated that: a) FR-7A has a higher affinity toward coal and pyrite than that for shale; and b) PAAX has a much higher affinity toward pyrite than toward coal and shale. In the selective flocculation tests, the ash-forming minerals can be efficiently rejected using sedimentation as the separation method. However, due to their relatively high specific gravity, pyrite particles co-settle with the coal flocs. To reject fine pyrite, a froth flotation was used for floc separation. The one-step flocculation-flotation process could reject more than 70% of each of the pyritic sulfur and ash minerals, while recovering more than 85% of the coal.

The automation (robotization) of coal mining activities at the face offers improvements in worker safety and productivity. The evolutionary introduction of autonomous, intelligent robotic machines to perform the most hazardous tasks may become a reality within the next 10 years. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Robotics and Automation research program is aggressively pursuing the development of the enabling technology necessary to achieve this goal. This program consists of both core and applications research, each focused on the fundamental issues of robotic technology. In the short term, the research is directed specifically to the robotization of present-day underground equipment and is being performed in a manner that can make incremental improvements in safety and productivity. The long-term goal is the development of intelligent autonomous mining systems.

This paper discusses the use of mineralogical work during the develop ment and operation of gold heap leaching projects. It focuses on the early assessment and prediction of metallurgical performance, the identi fication of gold recovery problems and the application of mineralogy in process optimization. The results of extensive operations support work emphasize the benefits of routine plant mineralogy. Mineralogical characteristics are amongst the most important factors determining leach- ability, leach time, reagent consumption, insoluble losses, scale forma tion and equipment performance.

Three run-of-mine bituminous coals, which ranged in rank from low volatile to high volatile A, were floated at nominal -28 mesh (590 µ m), -100 mesh (150 µ m), and -400 mesh (37 µ m) feed particle sizes with selected pyrite depressants and a dispersant. For the coals tested, pyrite and ash-forming minerals were usually rejected best at a -100 mesh feed particle size. Depressant additions tended to improve flotation selectivity between pyrite and coal. When joint dispersant-depressant systems were used at -100 mesh (150 µ m) feed particle sizes, the total sulfur content of the clean coal decreased further. For a comparable coal yield, less fuel oil collector was required for the flotation of -100 mesh coal than was required for the flotation of either -28 or -400 mesh feed.

Using potassium oleate as a collector and alizarin red S as a modifying agent, selective depression of dolomite from francolite was achieved in an alkaline medium (pH > 9.0). Adsorption of alizarin reds alone on dolomite was found to be higher than that on francolite. Complimentary adsorption experiments of alizarin red S and oleate showed that oleate adsorprion was increased in the presence of alizaring red S. The results are explained in terms of comparative adsorption for the active sites on francolite and dolomite by oleate and alizarin red S and their interactions with dissolved mineral species in solution.

Spinel ferrites, like NiFe2-2x Znx Ti4 O4 Fe CO1.5 Ge0.5 Tix O4, Ga1-x Fex Ni CO O4, Nil-x Fex Mn2 O4 have been prepared using the respective metal oxides in Stoichiometric quantities, by the ceramic method. The oxides were homogenized in acetone medium, pelletifed by using poly vinyl acetate as the binder. They were fired at 1000°C for 100 hours for compound formation. Chalcogenide spinels such as Zn1-x Cux Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=l and Cu1-x Fex Cr2 Se4 where 0=x=0.3 have been prepared by using 99.99% pure elements and then fired at 1000°C in quartz ampoules under vacuum conditions. X-ray diffraction studies of these compounds indicated a single cubic spinel phase. DC resistivity studies of the compounds were taken between 300-700K using LCR bridge by two probe technique. Thermo-electric power measurements were taken between 300-500K for all the compounds. Initial susceptibility studies have been carried out using a low field (0.506) and from which the nature of magnetic dimains and Curie temperatures were determined. Magnetic hysteresis measurements were carried out at 300K and at 80K, using alternating current hysteresis loop tracer, at 2K02 field. Mossbauer spectral measurements were carried out using Co57 source embedded in a copper matrix and an absorber containing 0.3 mg/cm2 of the sample. The spectra has been fitted by Mossfit Program. The catalytic effect of the spinel ferrites NiFe2-2x Znx Tix O4 where 0=x=1 has been studied by using the model reaction of decomposition of H2O2 at temperatures from 40°C to 70°C. It was found that the spinel oxides were found to possess poor catalytic activity.

In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. The extraction of gold from chloride solutions by ion exchange is examined. It is shown that at initial gold concentrations between 1 - 5 ppm, 20 g/l C1- and pH 5, the kinetics of loading on weak base resins are slightly slower than those observed with activated charcoal. Equilibrium loading of auric chloride varies considerably as a function of pH from one resin to another. For all of the resins studied, nearly complete gold extraction was achieved between pH 2 and pH 6.5. Sodium hypochlorite was found to exhibit a slight effect on the equilibrium loading of gold chloride.

Compania Minera Disputada de las Condes (CMD), an Exxon Affiliate stewarded by Exxon Coal and Minerals Company, operates two' copper mines and concentrators in Chile. Pilot plant studies were initiated in 1984 using a 0.46 meter and a 0.91 meter diameter column for the cleaning of copper concentrate. This eventually resulted in the design and operation of a rectangular column with an area of 6.8 m2, increasing the final copper concentrate grade from about 30% to almost 32'1. Cu without any loss in copper recovery. Evaluation studies of a commercial bubble generator as against the previously used filter cloth air sparger are now in progress.

In order to develop more accurate procedures for scale-up and design of semi-autogenous grinding mills through detailed mathematical models, a better understanding of the charge motion and rocklball segregation is needed. To achieve this a 0.61 m (2.0 ft) diam by 0.305m (1 .0ft) length plexiglas mill was constructed as a scale model of a commercial SAG mill. Rock motion in the rotating mill was simulated using various sizes of ceramic balls. Quantitative measurements of dynamic angle of repose, water and slurry motion, holdup and size segregation of the charge were taken. In addition, a video presentation (available to the public) was prepared to elucidate charge and water motion at various mill speeds, charge volumes, rocksize distribution, and flow rates.

In February of 1989 the Mission Complex of ASARCO Incorporated completed an expansion of its concentrator, raising the base mining rate from 25,900 TPO (28,500 STPD) to 37,200 TPO (41,000 STPD). The expansion was accomplished by extending the twelve existing Mission ball mills in length, by installing the grinding circuit from Asarco's idled Sacaton Concentrator along with various auxiliary equipment, and by modifications to the flotation circuit and water systems. This paper will give a brief history of the consolidation of the ore body which made the expansion possible and explain the various parts of the expansion.

At the kernel of the subject is due diligence in major decision-making, that is, where major money amounts and a large corporate commitment are at stake. The "due diligence" means how carefully we do our homework before making the decision. The homework or feasibility study addresses different parts of the decision. In the industrial minerals business the study seeks to uncover the pros and cons in: o The mineral reserves, quantity, quality, mineability, access, etc. o The environmental impact of mining, processing and transporting. o The economics of operations. o Financial aspects o Legal aspects o Many other aspects o And -oh yes! the marketing aspects.

Treatment of refractory gold ores containing arsenic has always presented a major problem in their processing to recover the contained precious metal values. The major difficulties are concerned with lower recoveries and production of hazardous fumes, effluents and residues. Due to these arsenic related problems, many otherwise economically attractive precious metal deposits and dumps all over the world are not exploited. In recent years, treatment processes for refractory gold ores and concentrates have been explored. A few commercial operations employing roasting or pressure leaching have resulted. Roasting has limitations due to environmental constraints related to off gases. Pressure leaching involving high temperatures (180° to 200° C or 356° to 392° F) and pressures (2.75 MPa or 400 psi) is accompanied by high capital and operating costs.

I have to express my surprise and must send a note of warning concerning the use of polyurethane foam as described in a paper by R.N. Torbin and R.F. Kovar, entitled "Innovative Shaft Lining Method," published in your February 1989 edition. In September, 1986, 177 miners lost their lives when they were exposed to fumes downwind from a fire in a tunnel lined with polyurethane foam. Whilst polyurethane exhibits reasonable fire retardent properties in small-scale tests, mass use in a tubular configuration, exacerbated by the furnace effect of cross-radiation, can lead to a rapid, uncontrollable conflagration.

Mr. Garrett brings up several interesting points with respect to the proposed API specification for "nontreated bentonite." However, although not explicitly stated, these specifications are being written based strictly on bentonites from the Wyoming/South Dakota area. Other sodium bentonites may be suitable for use as drill mud but will be unacceptable since the specifications are designed for Wyoming bentonites. Regardless of the API's intent that its specifications are intended only as guidelines, they are generally adhered to on an international basis and, for practical purposes, might as well be chiseled in stone. Estes (1986) notes that the quality of bentonite available from Wyoming producers has steadily declined since the early 1960's. The plastic viscosity: yield point (PV:YP) ratio was included in the current API 13A specification primarily to prevent excessive polymer treatment of lower quality bentonite to make drill mud. However, with development of polymers designed to control YP, this specification cannot ensure that only high-quality bentonites are used for drill mud. Nor will the new specifications for untreated bentonites. Other sodium bentonites are available. Bentonite produced in southeast Oregon demonstrates superior performance characteristics without addition of polymer or other chemicals. However, the exceptionally high purity of these deposits leads to a relatively high YP:PV ratio since the naturally high YP probably results from the higher purity and smaller particle size of this bentonite (Rath. 1986 and personal communication). These bentonite; typically have a smectite component exceeding 90% (Rath, 1985), compared with 70% to 75% smectite for typical Wyoming bentonites, as determined by X- ray diffraction and tests for colloid content. As evident from the accompanying table, the untreated Oregon bentonite has excellent rheological properties, though different from Wyoming bentonites due to the high purity. Additionally, this bentonite reacts well with polymers typically used in the oil industry, making it eminently suitable for use in a low-solids mud system. The extremely low grit content, less that 0.5% on a 75 mm (200-mesh) wet sieve, greatly exceeds the standards set for Wyoming bentonite. Optimum rheological properties are obtained at a higher moisture content than Wyoming bentonites. At 10% moisture, API 13A maximum, the clay is overdried, again reflecting the high smectite content. Investment activity in the Pacific Rim of Fire has seen a phenomenal surge from epithermal gold exploration. Individual countries are attractive because of lower up-front minerals lease costs (US, Canada), better geological prospectivity (Chile, Indonesia), or cheaper equities (Australia). Since the October 1987 stock-market crash, large companies are shedding minority joint venture interests to focus on core businesses. Some vertical integration is evident in Japanese coal investments in the Pacific Rim. This paper does not cover the aluminum industry oligopoly which is multi-national in character nor does it cover the many Canada to US minerals investments. It will be interesting to see if the new US-Canadian free-trade treaty will reverse that investment flow.

The Ok Tedi gold/copper deposit of almost 800 million tonnes was found in I968 because at that time technology had just developed sufficiently to enable exploration of such an area, world markets and prices for copper encouraged exploration for large deposits of low grade ore, Papua New Guinea law encouraged exploration by groups with men, money, management and expertise necessary for successful prosecution of such a search and such groups were already operating in the country.

The effect of galvanic interactions among sulfide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, and sphalerite in the presence and absence of a grinding ball material on the flotation recovery of chalcopyrite has been studied. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ESCA) studies were carried out to identify the reaction products on the sulfide minerals after different apes of galvanic interactions. Galvanic contact with active minerals such as galena and sphalerite, either alone or together, significantly affected the floatability of chalcopyrite mineral, such an effect being more severely felt in the additional presence of a grinding medium as well as oxygen. Surface analysis studies revealed the presence of oxyhydroxide species of iron on all the sulfide mineral samples which were in prior contact with the grinding medium. The formation of such oxyhydroxide species of iron was found to be dependant on the relative electrochemical activity of the mineral. Probable electrochemical reaction mechanisms are discussed.

Installation of UP& Is monitoring system was planned to be completed in three stages: Environmental Monitoring, ConveyorBelt Interface, and Power Distribution Interface. With Phases 1 and 2 completed and Phase 3 initiated, massive amounts of valuable information have been obtained. From this information, many benefits where recognized and the decision was made to expand the system. This provided monitoring and control capabilities in a variety of new applications from ventilation fan and pump interface to innovative installations such as ground control monitoring. All current uses as well as future plans for expansion and data manipulation will be discussed.

There is a continuing debate about the influence of circulating load and classifier efficiency on the capacity of the circuit. Specifically, the effects of preferential classification, bypassed fines, and the sharpness of classification will be examined. Horizontal cyclones have also proven to be very successful in a number of operations but their impact on the circuit capacity has not been clearly defined.
