Introduction The South African Iron and Steel Co. Ltd., in Sishen, operates a large iron ore mine in the Cape Province of the Republic of South Africa. The mine is about 600 km (370 miles) west of Johannesburg. Its annual capacity is 100 Mt (110 million st) of ore and waste. Present production is 60 Mt/a (66 million stpy). The mine operates continuously six days a week. Primary equipment includes 55 154 t (170 st) Wabco and Unit Rig trucks and 14 P&H shovels. During 1979, a feasibility study into the application of a trolley assist system was launched. This was due to the escalation in diesel fuel costs and the appeal by the South African government to reduce the use of fossil fuels. Tests and economic evaluations proved the system technically feasible. The estimated discounted cash flow return exceeded 50%. Diesel fuel consumption would be reduced by 120 ML (31.7 million gal) in the next 10 years. The construction of 7.7 km (4.8 miles) of line and the conversion of 66 154 t (170 st) trucks were completed in March 1982. System description The conventional 154 t (170 st) diesel electric rear-dump haul-truck is equipped with two direct current wheelmotors in the rear axle. They drive the rear wheels through planetary gearboxes. A 1.2-MV (1600-hp) diesel engine and an alternator is used to power the wheelmotors. The trolley assist system consists of an overhead power line, a current collector mounted on the truck, and add-on control equipment where external electric power is routed by way of the current collector to the motorized wheels. The diesel engine is used to propel the truck on level sections. On inclines, the wheel-motors of the truck are coupled by way of a current collector to the externally generated electrical power supply for propulsion. The diesel engine, having lower output than the wheelmotors, limits the truck performance. Previously, maximum output was required from an engine on inclines. By supplying the wheelmotors from a virtually unlimited outside electric energy source, the truck performance is enhanced to the extent that speed is increased by 46% and fuel consumption reduced by 75%. System design The unique operational requirements of this mine rendered the already proven trolley pole system useless. Minimum loss in truck mobility and flexibility was required. Overhead lines and substations were required to be relatively light and portable. This enables fast repositioning of a line with no loss in material. These unique specifications set the base for the design of the Sishen system. Steel I-beams, 203 x 203 mm x 52 kg/m (8 x 8 in. x 35 lb per ft) with lengths varying from 8.3 to 11.3 m (27 to 37 ft), mounted on base plates about 4 x 2.6 m (13 x 8.6 ft) were used as masts. The masts were erected at about 50 m (165 ft) and the base plates covered with about 12 t (13 st) of iron ore to keep them absolutely stable. Results from the pilot installations indicated that using single cantilever cross arms for insulator and overhead conductor suspension was not practical. The tension in the overhead varied too much with temperature changes, causing too much sag in the lines. There had to be a positive and negative conductor. It was decided to suspend each polarity on an independent cantilever and keep the conductors under constant tension by weights acting through a two-to-one pulley tensioning arrangement. For each overhead conductor, a standard 160-mm (6.5-sq in.) grooved copper railway conductor was used. To obtain the necessary current carrying capacity, two of these conductors are used in parallel per pole. Insulators are rated at 4 kV and are of the composite type. An 11-kV three-phase line, supported by the pantograph line masts on the opposite side of the dc line, feeds the rectifier stations. The rectifier stations consist of an 11-kV to 860-V, three-phase 1.46 MVA transformer and a three-phase diode bridge rectifier. JOHN HAMRIC: Our next topic leader is David Huth, superintendent of sulfuric power generation, DAP, and shipping for IMC-Agrico, Nichols Plant, Mulberry, Florida. With a title like that it's no wonder he believes in empowerment. His topic today is "The Triumphs and Pitfalls of Using Empowerment Techniques." DAVID HUTH: Empowerment and its benefits are a desirable alternative to the traditional management structure. The difference between the two is the amount of decision- making authority and responsibility given to individuals by a supervisor. Just what is empowerment and how does it work? Empowerment is relinquishing to individuals the authority and responsibility to make daily decisions. Can everyone be empowered? What if they make a wrong decision? Will I empower myself out of a job? These are questions that all managers have when they hear the word empowerment. In today's fast-paced and high-pressure business environment, the old way of managing people must be replaced with a new approach. No longer can we, as managers, make all the decisions. The increased work loads due to downsizing, consolidation, and synergies have stretched us too thin. What about our employees? How can we motivate them into the high-performance teams that our companies are demanding? What possibly could satisfy both these issues? The solution to these problems can be solved with the power of employee empowerment. Employee empowerment will not only lessen the load on managers but will build teamwork, motivation, and pride into the employees who work for the managers who use it. American business was rudely awakened in the early 1980s when the Japanese companies not only caught up to American companies but literally flew by them. America was fat, dumb, and happy after World War II. Why wouldn't they be? They had all the factories. Everyone else had to rebuild. So for 40 years American business lounged in the limelight of very little true competition. But times change. Unfortunately, American business did not. Now the cry to perform in the new global economy has come down from the corporate boardrooms. Down through the ranks it has been felt. Guess who is supposed to make it work? But where are all those people who are going to make this rejuvenation and corporate renaissance possible? Many of them are gone-lost in downsizing, synergies, and rightsizings

Two modes of collector addition techniques are applied in the column flotation for cleaning ultra fine coal. The collector can be: 1) added directly into the coal slurry through the feed system; and 2) gasified collector and transported in the gas phase through the bubbles. Operating parameters of the column flotation were investigated through three phases of work plans for Pittsburgh No.8 seam coal. In present study, the column flotation using two modes of collector addition techniques were tested and compared. Ninety percent or higher combustible recovery can be achieved by using both methods. However, utilizing the gasified collector addition technique in column flotation has more potential than direct liquid addition technique to obtain the higher recovery at same collector dosage.

Echo Bay Mines Ltd. operates a gold heap leach in Round Mountain, Nevada, U.S.A. In the past two years, the mine has expanded operations from 13.5 kt/d (15 kst/d) to 41.0 kt/d (45 kst/d), making it the world's largest gold heap leach operation. The expansion is a separate system from the previous 12 year old plant, yet very similar. The flowsheet contains open circuit primary, secondary, and tertiary crushing with interstage screening. A leach pad stacker loads reusable asphalt leach pads. The process plant features carbon adsorption, pressure strip, electrowinning, and electrorefining.

"Mineral prospectivity modelling of polymetallic nodule deposits has been completed over the Cook Islands Exclusive Economic Zone (CIEEZ) using the GIS based Weights of Evidence modelling technique. Polymetallic nodules, also known as manganese nodules, have been explored as a possible resource for a number of metals including cobalt since the early 1970s. Recent data on the nodule composition and abundance in the CIEEZ has led to a renewed interest in the prospectivity for manganese nodules in the region. The predictive modelling has used the most recently accepted mineral model for polymetallic deep-sea nodule deposition to identify factors that are most likely to map the presence of this type of mineralisation in the CIEEZ.Manganese nodules form on the deep seafloor as concretions formed by concentric layering of iron and manganese hydroxides around a core and they grow at a very slow rate, on the order of millimeters per million years. The available data for the CIEEZ indicates a greater abundance in the area of nodules formed by hydrogenetic processes, which are the result of slow precipitation of metallic components from seawater. The environment in which the nodules are most abundant is at depths between 4,000 m and 6,000 m in areas of low sedimentation rate. Hydrogenous nodules commonly grow on siliceous and pelagic clay sediment, they are less common on other types of sediment."

"Technical advances in longwall mining over the last several years have resulted in much larger and faster shearers that have the capability of mining at speeds over 100 ft./min. This has resulted in a substantial increase in the amount of dust that is generated at the shearer and during shield advances. Meanwhile, increased underground coal production has put a greater demand on longwall dust control systems as some operators have had difficulty maintaining consistent compliance with federal dust standards. To address this need, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health [NIOSH] is investigating the effectiveness of a water spray manifold mounted on the tailgate end of the shearer body. The sprays are oriented parallel to the tailgate ranging arm, and these sprays create a water curtain confining the dust plume near the face, preventing the dust from drifting into the walkway. This redirection of dust provides a clean air envelope for the tailgate shearer operator and jacksetters working near the tailgate drum. Three different tailgate spray manifold designs were tested and evaluated at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research [OMSHR] Pittsburgh Longwall Test Facility. Manifolds were equipped with hollow cone or flat fan water spray nozzles and evaluated at three face air velocities (500, 700, and 900 fpm) and at water pressures of 100, 150, and 200 psi. Reductions in dust concentrations were observed at six face sampling locations for all the tailgate manifold systems at each of the tested spray pressures and face velocities. Based on results from the laboratory tests showing reductions in dust concentrations at sampling locations downwind of the shearer a spray manifold was fabricated and evaluated at an underground operation. INTRODUCTION In 2012, underground coal mining in the United States produced a total of 342 million short tons, with longwall mining accounting for over 53% of this production [EIA 2013]. The longwall mining industry continues to see remarkable and significant improvements in longwall mining equipment and mining practices. Average shift production during compliance dust sampling has increased from 3,500 tons per shift in 1994 to approximately 6,000 tons per shift in 2012. A dramatic decrease in working longwall faces from 80 to 49 has occurred over the same period [Fiscor 2013]. Factors specific to longwall mines that supported productivity improvement include: higher capacity shearers, improved shield hydraulics and control, higher horsepower for equipment, wider face conveyors, and larger faces. Today, the average face width has increased to 1,188 ft., with one longwall operation reporting a face width of 1,650 ft. compared to an average of 750 ft. in 1994 [Fiscor 2009, 2014]. Panel lengths in 2013 averaged 11,307 ft. compared to 7,000 ft. in 1994. Overall production from U.S. longwalls has increased by nearly four percent from 2007 to 2012 with over 182 million tons mined annually [EIA 2013]. Given the volume and rate of coal produced on longwall faces, the potential to generate large quantities of respirable coal mine dust also exists."

Western Greece is a favorable site for exploration and discovery of oil fields. The most important potential source rocks seem to be all the rocks deposited before middle Jurassic under special circumstances, such as reducing conditions, which allowed preservation and maturation of the organic material. In general all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene are not favorite source rocks. The porosity type was studied on fifty samples using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potential reservoir rocks are the porous Paleogene wackestones-packstones with boring, channel and vuggy porosity type. Finally seal rocks are the impermeable mud-stones and wackestones of Jurassic, Cretaceous and Paleogene age. These rocks consist of micrite and whole sells of foraminiferas and the porosity type is mainly intercrystal/interparticle. A Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analysis, conducted on seventy samples using a wet oxidation method, has revealed an extremely low TOC content (less than 0.05 %). This amount is by far less than the minimum organic content amount, required for source rock characterization and characterizes all the rocks of middle Jurassic to Paleogene age. Additionally, 18O and 13C stable isotope analysis was contacted and the results are given in d values. All the rocks within the studied time interval have much lower d values than petroleum source rocks. Clay mineral content was studied in almost seventy samples. As is indicated by the clay mineral content the studied rocks have reached up to the Middle Diagenesis and the temperature during diagenesis was rather low.

The Tailings Leach Plant (TLP) of the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines Ltd at Nchanga was commissioned in 1974 as the world's first largest successfully operated agitation leach SX-EW plant for copper production. The design, development and operation of the plant soon after commissioning termed as TLP stage II has been described by Holmes et al (1). In the initial phase the plant was designed to treat approximately 25,000 tonnes per day of current flotation tailings from the Nchanga Concentrator operations, and had a design capacity to produce 75,000 tonnes per annum of copper. Further expansion took place in 1986, and TLP stage III was successfully commissioned to treat an additional 20,000 -25,000 tonnes per day of large reserves (over 135m tonnes) of reclaimed tailings stockpiled since the early 1930's in four paddock type tailings dams (T01 to T04). The salient feature of TLP stage III expansion described by S K Mwenechanya et al (2 -3) was the installation of the world's largest Horizontal Belt Filter Plant with 26 filters each of 80 m2 filtration area.

The world's barite reserve base is adequate for at least 100 years at the current consumption rate. China, India and the United States are expected to remain the leading producing countries, and the United States will continue to be the largest consumer. None of the known substitutes for barium sulfate are expected to impact existing applications. World production in 1995 was 4.41 Mt (4.86 million st), which is about 50% of capacity. Consumption is directly proportional to hydrocarbon well installation activity. Imports are expected to continue to supply more than half of the US requirements.

The use of industrial wastes, such as quarry fines of crushed stone, should represent a basic component of sustainable development indicators. Therefore, increasing investments should be foreseen in techniques of treatment and recycling of residues in mining, as well as by-product attainment that generate jobs and income. The standards of identification and discarding of industrial wastes vary significantly between countries. However, practically all nations have started becoming more restrictive regarding environmental legislation, especially concerning production, transport, treatment, recycling and final discarding of industrial wastes. Under an environmental point of view, solid wastes produced by a system (such as a quarry) can be handled in two ways: a) they can be discarded in piles or b) they can be internally or externally recycled and reused. This second practice is translated to an additional economic consequence such as an increase of income as well as a decreased environmental impact. This option is more advanced and should be included in company policy. This paper presents cases where this practice is used, i.e. diminishing the environmental liabilities through the use of the quarry fines in the manufacture of industrial devices, incorporating such wastes in the productive chain, instead of storing them in piles.

NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory is currently involved in research to identify silica dust generation in underground metal/nonmetal mines. The ultimate goal of this research is to develop control technologies to reduce worker exposure to respirable silica dust. Commodities and job classifications with the highest silica dust exposure have been identified through analysis of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) compliance dust sampling database. Dust surveys were conducted in an underground limestone and gold mine to investigate silica dust sources, generation levels, and controls being used. A summary of the mining operations, sampling procedures, resulting data, and suggested methods to improve the dust control will be provided.

Agglomeration techniques are widely used by industry to form fine particles into larger masses that are easier to handle and process. One area where agglomeration is potentially useful is in heap leaching operations. With-out agglomeration, fine particles travel through the heap, clogging the spaces between the larger particles and resulting in poor leach solution flow. Poor flow of leach solution will result in long leach rates and/or decreased metal recovery. Agglomeration immobilizes the fine particles and therefore improves heap permeability to fluid flow. Additional additives (binders) are needed to prevent agglomerates from breaking up as leaching solution percolates through the heap. Type II Portland cement and lime are two well-known binders used in gold and silver leaching, but these are limited to alkaline leaching environments. Various other products have been tested as binders, including polymers. This paper summarizes the benefits of agglomeration in heap leaching and the results obtained from the testing of several different agglomeration binders in heap leaching operations.

"Estimation of rock drillability is vital for mining and boring operations. For this purpose, many researchers have developed various models and equations to estimate rock drillability. Most of these models aim to determine the drillability of rock and the penetration rate by using the physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Although drillability primarily depends on rock properties, other parameters have an impact on drillability as well. One of these parameters is the rotation speed of the bit. This study investigates the effect of rotation speed of the bit on drilling performance. Drilling tests were performed in the laboratory using rotary core drilling and a diamond drilling machine. The relationships between the physical rock properties and the penetration rate were investigated on 15 different rock types and four different rotation speeds were applied to determine the effect of rotation speed of bit on drilling. The uniaxial compressive strength, density, and P wave velocity show strong correlations with the penetration rate. In addition, if the values of the physical and mechanical properties of the rock increase, the effect of the rotation speed on the penetration rate decreases, i.e., increasing the rotation speed of the bit slightly affects drillability on hard and solid formations. 1. Introduction Drilling is one of the most essential operations in the mining industry, beginning from the exploration phase and continuing throughout all stages of production to the end of mine life (Taheri et al. 2016). In addition, drilling is widely using in the construction industry and other engineering operations. Various drillholes (blastholes, injection holes, borehole, diamond wire holes in natural stone mines, etc.), are needed during development and production activities in underground and open-pit mines as well as in dam, tunnel, road construction and sewage systems. For effective drilling operations, it is first necessary to gather information about the formation to be drilled. Drilling should then be performed after selecting appropriate drilling equipment and drilling parameters (thrust, pressure, rotational speed, flushing). Prediction of the drillability of rocks is vital for planning and performing the drilling process. Although, drilling is affected by several factors, the most important ones are related to the geological and mechanical properties of formation (Protodyakonov 1963, Paone et al 1969, Tandanand and Unger 1975, Pathinkar and Misra 1976, Rabia 1985, Perrin et al 1977). Determining the penetration rate is vital for planning a project and calculating the operation costs. The prediction of drilling affects the selection of drilling equipment, the efficiency of drilling equipment, project costs and the process of drilling operations."

Coal has been mined in the central Appalachian coalfields of southern West Virginia, western Virginia, and eastern Kentucky for more than a century. The dwindling reserve base consists in large part of coal that would have been considered unmineable by earlier generations. Nearly every current operation is working on a property where coal has been extracted in the past, from seams either above, below, or both. NIOSH is conducting research aimed at helping mine planners prevent hazardous conditions due to multiple seam interactions. To-date, more than 300 case histories have been collected from underground mines, mainly from central Appalachia. This paper focuses on several of the more challenging situations that have been encountered, including: • Room-and-pillar development 20 ft (6 m) beneath full extraction workings at a depth of 1,000 ft (300m) of cover (Virginia) • Pillar recovery 45 ft above full extraction workings at 900 ft (270 m) of cover (Virginia) • Near-simultaneous room-and-pillar mining with pillar recovery with 40 ft (12 m) of interburden and 1,500-2,000 ft (450-600 m) of cover (Kentucky) • Longwall mining directly beneath main entries in overlying seams (West Virginia) • Some of these operations have been highly successful in overcoming the challenges, others less so. The lessons learned from their experience will help ensure that these and similar difficult reserves can be mined safely.

Problems of how to use artificial intelligence (AI) methods and expert systems (ES) to control complex industrial projects have lately become significant in practical terms. Mining ventilation systems undoubtedly belong to complex multi dimensional objects of control with stochastic nonstationary and nonlinear processes. Formal models based on automated ventilation control, do require awkward algorithmic solutions, moreover, a number of tasks become the operator's headache, and the quality of their solution depends on his experience and intuition. These tasks include: - identifying pre-accidental situations and determining their causes; - making well-grounded decisions with regard to changing ventilation regimes, forecast of mining operations taken account of; - controlling ventilation systems in emergency situations, e.g. when in accident, etc. It is in this context that we have for a number of years been investigating how to practically use AI methods for operative control in dynamic aero-and-gas mining processes, one of our research directions being devoted to working out a consulting programme for the ventilation system operator. Our researching and modeling problem was identification of aero-and-gas situation in different parts of ventilation network and its interpretation in order to determine possible causes for gas regime changing and unexpected consequences. We would single out the following stages in this task: I. Operative information procession coming to the data base from the sensors and analysis of hypothetical versions (using the associative rules base) with regard to factors which have caused significant parameter fluctuations (e.g. C%(t), H(t), Q(t) etc.)., 2. Selection of hypotheses in the knowledge base and forming conclusions in accordance with reliability scale. 3. Clarifying the obtained conclusions in dialogue with the operator. 4. Correcting the associative rules base.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). Through the remainder of this century, world consumption of fluorine per ton of primary aluminum produced will continue to be substantially reduced. Growth of the primary industry will offset some of the unit consumption, but demand for new fluorine sources will decline sharply. Continued application of dry fume scrubbing systems will be the most significant factor in reducing demand.

This paper focuses upon the changing character of the market for Western bentonite, and upon transportation methods and costs affecting this market. The basis for the data in this paper, in addition to public sources of information such as federal and state government agencies and the open literature, was a program of 57 face-to-face interviews with individuals knowledgeable in the bentonite production, consumption, and transportation industries. The study was performed in 1974 and 1975 by Versar Inc., for the Bureau of Land Management, Department of the interior.*

"Fatigue presents several challenges for the mining industry. Depending on the specific occupation, daily work or operational setup on any given mine site, mining jobs can have a fair amount of labor-intensive tasks mixed with monotonous and repetitive duties. Combined with the long working hours and shift-work schedules of mining work, the prevalence of fatigue in mine workers may seem rather unsurprising.Mining is certainly not alone in facing the challenge of addressing worker fatigue. Indeed, many of the characteristics above mirror the similarities of fatigue in other industries, such as health care, aviation and security. To the extent that fatigue in mining acts like fatigue in any other industry, then any fatigue management applications, trainings, or interventions in existence can be borrowed from other industries and applied to mining in a cookie-cutter approach. However, some have argued that mining in particular is especially susceptible to increases in the prevalence of fatigue beyond the characteristics listed above due to the multifaceted combination of factors in mining environments associated with fatigue: dim lighting; limited visual acuity; hot temperatures; loud noise; highly repetitive, sustained, and monotonous tasks; shiftwork; long work hours; long commute times due to mine site remoteness; early morning awakenings; and generally poor sleep habits (Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, 2012; Legault, 2011). Legault (2011) in particular argues that it is the combination of these factors simultaneously that can make mineworkers particularly susceptible to sleep deprivation and fatigue in comparison to other industries where these factors are often not present all together. If fatigue looks and acts different in mining, as others have argued, more research is needed to determine if, how, and why worker fatigue might need to be managed differently in mining.While the burden of fatigue on the mining population has not yet been evaluated thoroughly, methods and measures of fatigue management remain a popular point of discussion. Many commercial suppliers and consultancy groups have begun to develop technologically based fatigue monitoring systems (McMillian, 2013). INTRODUCTION During the normal course of a mining project, a feasibility study will be prepared that addresses all the aspects of the project including geology and mineral inventories, mining and geo- technical, metallurgical processing, infrastructure, environmental considerations and economic analyses. These studies are prepared for various reasons. Occasionally, a feasibility study will be prepared solely for use within a company as justification for development expenditures, however, these documents are frequently submitted outside the company either to raise funds from financial institutions or from public financing on one of the various securities exchanges. Mineral industry consultants are often called upon to participate in the preparation of feasibility studies or to conduct an independent audit and review of an internally prepared study. As the recoverable mineral resources form the foundation upon which the balance of a feasibility study is based, including the economic analysis of the project, the resource aspect of the study is examined very carefully by financial and securities organizations. The balance of this discussion is directed toward the various geological and resource estimation aspects of feasibility studies that experience has shown to be of particular importance. Much of this discussion will be directed toward open pit gold operations, although the principles are applicable to any type of deposit. 2.0 GEOLOGIC RESPONSIBILITIES IN FEASIBILITY STUDIES The principal geological effort in the preparation of a feasibility study is generally dedicated to the following areas: - Preparation of Geologic Reserve/Resource Estimates - Condemnation of Sites for Facilities, Access Roads, Leach Pads, Waste Dumps and Tailings Disposal - Collection of Geotechnical Data - Provision of Mineralogical and Petrological Data Pertinent to Metallurgical Processing - Selection of Appropriate Bulk Sampling Sites for Collection of Metallurgical Samples Each of these items will be addressed in detail in the following sections. 3.0 RESERVE/RESOURCE ESTIMATION An ore reserve estimate consists of the determination of a volume, or tonnage, and a grade for the deposit. There are numerous cases in the mining industry of projects that have experienced severe difficulties when operational ore grade, tonnage or metallurgical amenability have proven to be deficient compared to predicted estimates. An error in estimation of tonnage generally leads to more long term problems affecting mine life and production schedules. However, a significant error in the estimation of grade, particularly if mined grade is lower than anticipated, can have an immediate, and often disastrous, effect upon a project.
