My reaction when first asked to present this paper was; "What could I possibly say that would hold the audience?s attention for 15 minutes? What could I offer that anyone familiar with the Nevada Barite Industry wouldn't already know?" Well, quite frankly I can't. The industry has certainly been anything but exciting for the past 10 years and, in fact, quite depressing. The challenge, for those few of us left in it, has been to keep it alive. At times it has felt like a doctor must feel with a terminally ill patient. All I can do is recap the past ten years, review the present state of the industry, and offer a few personal opinions and observations as to where I think we are headed.

Over the past four years, the Coal Research Bureau of West Virginia University has presented a number of papers on operations research in the coal industry before various AIME meetings and meetings of other societies. These papers have been followed up by further presentations in the technical press. The emphasis of all of these papers has been to demonstrate applications of operations research to the solution of numerous types of coal industry problems. In each case, effort has been made to demonstrate that operations research does not require extensive knowledge of computer science or use of sophisticated higher mathematics. In fact, for most applications, satisfactory results can be obtained by a single individual in a minimum of time with no aids other than a pencil and paper and a knowledge of basic arithmetic. The most recent efforts by the Coal Research Bureau have been directed toward the continuing industry problem of optimizing the location of mining facilities. Preliminary work in this area was presented before the Central Appalachian Section of AIME and subsequently published in the May, 1972, issue of Coal Age. This initial presentation illustrated techniques for determining optimum locations of facilities based upon material transport effort under the assumption of constant cost per ton mile of haulage effort. The present paper will expand upon this earlier work and introduce economic factors. In the design of a mine or mining system, careful consideration must be given to the sites selected for each element of the system. Optimum placement of facilities is vital to minimize capital and operating cost. Thus, barring unfavorable geological conditions or other exceptional factors, facilities should be located at those points which represent the minimum cumulative cost over the life of the property. Most cost factors are independent, or essentially independent of the location of fixed facilities. Thus, for example, regardless of the location of the shaft, the direct cost to mine any given ton of coal is essentially constant. The major 1

"A heterogeneity study was conducted at Erdenet Copper Mine in Erdenet, Mongolia, to determine the fundamental sampling error associated with blasthole sampling. Using a custom designed sector sampler, six large blasthole samples were collected to perform the test that was developed by Pierre Gy, to estimate the constitutional heterogeneity factor for several types of ore. The study investigated the entire sampling protocol, from mine site to analytical laboratory, and quantified the contributions to fundamental sampling error (FSE) of the various stages of sampling and sample preparation. The total relative standard deviation (RSD) of sampling error was determined to be ±32% and ±49.4% for copper and molybdenum respectively. A classical statistics analysis conducted on the data confirmed the level of RSD. About 95% of the sampling error was produced from only one step in the sampling protocol: when the 1 kg sample was reduced to 50 g sample for chemical analysis. Therefore, it is recommended that the 1 kg sample be reduced to 50g using a slightly different protocol to minimize the FSE. The 1 kg sample should be first crushed to 0.2cm size. A 250g split should then be taken and fine ground. A 50g split should then be taken from the 250g fine ground split. These two simple steps will reduce the FSE to ±7.9% and ±17% for copper and molybdenum respectively. The modified sampling protocol effectively reduces the probability of misclassification of low grade ore to zero. INTRODUCTION The Erdenet copper-molybdenum open pit mine is located in Erdenet, in Orkhon province, Mongolia. The Erdenetiin-Ovoo copper-molybdenum deposit is between 1.5 and 3 km wide, and about 25 km in length (Erdenet Mining Corporation, 2016). Chalcopyrite, bornite covellite and chalcocite are among the major minerals found in the deposit. The mine processes approximately 26 million tons of ore annually. A study was conducted to evaluate the fundamental error associated with the blasthole cuttings and sampling protocol at the mine. The open pit mine uses 215mm diameter Russian drills to drill 17.5m holes for 15m benches. The total weight of blasthole cuttings for a 215mm diameter hole and 15m bench height is between 1.5 and 2 tonnes. This amount of sample is difficult and time consuming to collect and analyze. Therefore, a sector sampler was designed for the Russian drills to collect large samples that were representative of the blasthole cuttings (Ganguli et al., 2016). In order to eliminate the delimitation and the extraction errors, researchers consider sector samplers to be ideal for sampling blastholes (Pitard, 2008; Chieregati and Pitard, 2009). This method was intentionally more rigorous than the blasthole sampling protocol at the mine to ensure that the blasthole cuttings were properly sampled. This study was part of a broader study that also looked at the relationship between particle size and grade. The samples collected by the custom designed sector sampler were very large (195 kg on average), and therefore, sufficient for both studies. The introduction of Web 2.0 platforms (also referred to as social media), with their architectures of participation, has ushered in a new era of technological interaction and information exchange that is changing the nature of corporate-community communications. Web 2.0 platforms give users the ability to generate data collaboratively, meaning that more stakeholders maintain the expectation of being able to contribute to online dialogue. In light of these changes, it is important for business to consider how social media can be used strategically to enhance stakeholder relationships and increase business efficiencies. This article provides three case studies of how different stakeholders in the mining industry are strategically using Web 2.0 platforms to communicate with target audiences. The case studies are based on the experience of respondents and from website observations, which were undertaken as part of a thesis research project by the first author (Mullard, 2010), focusing on the application of social media in the mining industry.

This chapter on the role of minerals in developing economies is oriented toward economic policy issues. The discussion and analysis cut across the technical, economic, legal, and policy fields. The goal of this chapter is to pro- vide relevant background information important to individuals involved with the minerals sector in developing countries. Where possible, trends are shown to provide a basis for understanding the evolving role of minerals in developing economies. This chapter is divided into the following five sections: (1) characteristics of developing countries (which presents selected statistical comparisons); (2) government objectives in developing countries; (3) government policy formulation in developing countries; (4) determinants of future trends, and (5) a summary of the chapter's major points combined with the authors' view. CHARACTERISTICS OF DEVELOPING COUNTRIES There are 155 nations in the world categorized as "developing countries." In total these nations represent about one third of the value of the world's mineral production, three quarters of the world's population, and over half of the world's land surface area. The group of so-called developing countries is quite diverse and there are exceptions to almost any general observation about the group as a whole. Most definitions of the term "developing country" are based on levels of per capita income. However, if per capita income is the sole criterion used in categorization, then several oil-exporting countries would jump from the category of developing country to the category of developed country.a Obviously, this results in a poor fit with respect to other measures. In general, the majority of developing countries can be characterized by relatively low per capita income, high population growth rates, high levels of unemployment, low levels of education, short average life ex- pectancies, income distribution skewed toward the highest 20% of the population, and a large share of exports represented by primary commodities. b For the purposes of this chapter a slightly modified version of the widely used World Bank system of classification (shown in Table 1.2.1) is used. As summarized in Table 1.2.1, developing countries are divided into three main groups based on estimated gross national product (GNP) per capita. It should be noted that the high- income, oil-exporting countries have characteristics of both developing and industrialized countries; however they are included for most statistical comparisons within the group of developing countries. This paper is a summary of the author's industrial experiences on the selection and optimization of flotation reagent schemes for the recovery of gold species. The trends given are a composite of data and experiences gained on 24 different gold ores from around the globe. The primary emphasis is on the benefits of matching the associated gold mineralogy to a reagent scheme most appropriate for that mineralogy. Two general categories are discussed: the flotation of free or native gold species and the flotation of gold associated with a variety of sulfide minerals. Important plant operating factors influencing each of these two categories are presented with supporting examples. Carefully matching reagent chemistry and appropriate operating conditions to any given gold-bearing ore will not only lower the total reagent cost but, more importantly, can lead to measurable increases in gold recovery.

It is well recognized that machine type and machine characteristics play vital roles in the successful application of froth flotation in mineral processing. Since the early 1900s, a multitude of machine designs have been and are still being introduced in an attempt to improve flotation efficiency. Machines based on mechanical agitation have been the most dominant in industrial practice. However, in recent years there has been a growing interest in pneumatic flotation units because of their claimed simplicity, low cost, high throughput and good metallurgical performance. This work was carried out to assess the effectiveness of pneumatic flotation on a magnetite ore. The method was applied using a prototype pneumatic flotation device that utilized a suitable nozzle for bubble generation. Important variables of the process were examined and optimized, including the nozzle size, air flow rate and froth thickness. Further tests were conducted to determine the influence of frother dosage and to explore the improvements that could be made on concentrate grade and recovery by cleaning and scavenging. Under the best test conditions, an iron concentrate was obtained with a grade of 66.4% Fe and a recovery of 97.7%. Particularly, the recovery was superior in comparison to that of mechanical flotation. This was attributed to the ability of pneumatic flotation to create and maintain a relatively thick froth layer.

Pyrometallurgical process are usually used to recover valuable metals from metal sulphide concentrates. However, their use is diminishing as the cost of energy rises and pollution controls become strictes. An alternative method of treatment sulphides could be bacterial leaching due its simplicity and negligible contamination (1-2). This process is presently used commercially to re cover metals such as Cu and U from low grade ore concentrates. In spite of numerous researchs during recent years (3-5) there exists very little kinetic data concerning the speed of bioleaching process. The kinetic analysis of bacterial activity is related with the metabolism and growth of microox ganisms . This fundamental information permits ma- king the best utilization of bacterial oxidation and to suggest techniques which might increase the production of the products desired. However, bio- kinetic models are especially complicated due to the existence of many metabolic routes and parallel reactions which are important for the life of the bacteria. Microbiological oxidation of a mineral substrate is influenced by its own inicial concentration: This influence can be determined by means of a kinetic study. In a medium with sufficient concentration of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium) and an adequate supply of 0, and CO2, as the only & L source of carbon for the biochemical synthesis, the substrate concentration would remain the only limitation in the rate of leaching. In this case the Michaelis-Menten model could be applied (6). The model is based on an association of the enzyme (El with the substrate (S) with consequent decomposition of the latter into enzyme and products [ ] The rate of dissolution is defined by the equation : [ ] Were V is the rate of metal extraction (mg 1-1 1 h-1 ) ; S is the pulp density Mn is the maximum rate for metal extraction (mg 1-1 h-1) and K is the constant of Michaelis (concentration of substrate that yields Vm/2). This method is applicable only when the rate of bacterial growth is similar to the rate of metal extraction. It would therefore be sufficient to control the concentration of metal in the medium over the period of time. In the present work a systematic study of the kinetics of ZnS and CuFeS bioleaching in sphalerite and complex ore concengrates was carried out. The rate of dissolution of the Zn and Cu as function of the pulp density and temperature was determined. However, most oxidations of sulphide dissolution take place with a very slow kinetic; but, this can be accelerated considerably by the addition to the solution of suitable catalytic ions, as was Suggested many years ago by Bjorling (7). Such ions can exercise an important influence on the rate of the oxidation-reduction reactions, both homogenous and heterogenous, which take place during the leaching of sulphides; they also affect the nature of the reaction products. The action of catalytic ions has been fully developed in aqueous systems, but in the absence of bacteria (8 - 11) although the actual machanisms is not totally known. The mechanisms proposed as hypotheses in the literature (8) indicate that, in the case of ZnS, the catalyst ion act through an electrochemical mechanism according to the reactions: [ ]

Three case studies were undertaken to investigate the role of land use potential evaluation in reclamation planning and to determine the impact of regional differences on the evaluation process. The three surface mines studied were representative of operations in the Appalachian, Interior, and Northern Great Plains provinces. The scope of the investigations included a survey of regional characteristics, a detailed investigation of the mining operations and site conditions, and an assessment of local land use planning activities in the area of the mine. Special attention was given to key factors that presently determine the use of reclaimed land. Also, for each case study, the postmining land use potential was evaluated using site planning principles. Specifically, the environmental, economic, and social impacts of several potential postmining land use plans were considered.

Autocad has become the standard graphics package for the mining industry as well as the general engineering profession. This paper discusses the evolution that mine planning has undergone and the trend toward compatibility with Autocad. It discusses the common use of Autocad in mine planning and systems modeling using a program called ICAMPS developed by Ohio Automation. As an example of its usefulness the use of the interactive ventilation network modeling capabilities are discussed specifically and are applied to mine planning at an operating trona mine. The ventilation analysis feature of the ICAMPS software works from Autocad drawing of the as-mined map and the projected mine layout. Using on-screen displays of these maps and the snap-on feature of Autocad, the planner designates nodes in the ventilation network, connects them into branches and selects branch characteristics from a side bar menu. The color coded ventilation network appears with the branch parameters alongside each branch. The software calculates the length of airways, computes the branch resistances where needed, converts the input into the required format and passes this information as input data along to the PENNVEN simulation program written by the Pennsylvania state University. Output is available in graphical as well as report format. The color coded graphs include pressures at the nodes and flow quantities on the branches. Since the networks come from the mine maps, the ventilation schematic displays are to scale and can be plotted separately or superimposed on the mine maps.

In froth flotation of phosphate, it is important that the flotation be as selective as possible in order to maximize grade and recovery without adding additional stages of flotation. Flotation columns provide a means for improving the selectivity compared to conventional flotation machines and are of considerable interest for phosphate processing. The selectivity of a flotation column is largely limited by the degree of back mixing of tailings into the froth zone, and its recovery is limited by the degree of short-circuiting of feed to the tailings. The horizontally baffled flotation column was therefore developed to minimize back mixing and short-circuiting without introducing problems with plugging or reduced capacity. The introduction of horizontal baffles to a column reduces both entrainment of feed water into the froth and short-circuiting of feed to the tailings, which improves the column selectivity. The results of horizontally baffled column flotation of phosphate are presented for fatty acid flotation of phosphate, with comparison to conventional flotation using the same reagents.

Employee involvement does not directly correlate to performance improvement. A key ingredient is the introduction of new Human Resource Systems that promote both performance improvement and employee involvement. Many organizations have tried to use employee involvement as the ''fixer" of performance issues-and seen their performance deteriorate further. They failed to realize that the entire human resource strategy must be connected to the goals of performance improvement and that greater employee involvement is only one tool in that strategy. So what are Human Resource Systems? These are systems that all managers use to get work done. Most of us are familiar with basics such as planning, assigning work, checking progress (auditing), completing assignments. We also commonly think in terms of staffing, training, compensation, or corrective action. All of these are human resource systems. All must be designed to support what you are trying to accomplish with your people. We call that the Human Resource Strategy. Let's examine one part of a total strategy intended to support more employee involvement at Kennecott Utah Copper-the hourly job structure. The design of hourly jobs directly affects how many employees of different capabilities are required to get the work done. It begins to answer some fundamental questions: • What are the roles and accountabilities of each employee? Do they have enough information to make decisions, to take responsibility for their work?

The content of the paper by V. Rajaram does not fulfill the expectations of the title. But Rajaram submitted the article in October 1983, and he could not have foreseen the numerous developments that would occur before his paper was published more than two years later. Nevertheless, Rajaram failed to mention the interest in oil shale development in southern Indiana beginning in late 1979 and continuing through the present as a result of special financial encouragement of three oil shale projects in May and August 1984 by the Indiana Energy Development Board and the Indiana Corp. for Science and Technology. A session at the 1985 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium in Lexington, KY, Nov. 18-20, 1985, gave the current status of oil shale developments in the eastern United States. Speakers at this session reported on the three Indiana projects. First, Gary D. Aho, Cliffs Engineering Inc., spoke on a feasibility study by Cliffs Engineering and Allis Chalmers for a site-specific pilot plant using the Allis Chalmers process. The plant site is in Clark County, IN, on property of the Midwest Energy Resources Co. The project is funded by $240,908 each from the Indiana Energy Development Board/Corp, for Science and Technology (EDB/CST) and the US Department of Energy (DOE) and $120,454 from the corporate sponsors (total $602,270). Completion is scheduled for mid-1986. Next, Edwin M. Piper, Stone and Webster Engineering Corp., discussed the American Syn-Crude/Indiana Oil Shale Project. This effort followed the completion of two smaller projects funded by the Indiana EDB/ CST: "Testing of Indiana Oil Shale in a Petrosix Pilot Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $50,000) and "Assessment of the Petrosix Process for an Indiana Shale Oil Plant" (total funding by EDB/CST at $100,000). The status at the time of the report at the Oil Shale Symposium was that a request for an extension of time for securing nonfederal support had been submitted to the US Synfuels Corp. The proposal included building an 11-m (36-ft) diam retort in south-eastern Indiana to process the New Albany Shale and to produce 366 m3 (2300 bbl) of shale oil per day by the PETROSIX process. The Indiana EDB/CST had contracted with Stone and Webster at $401,100 from EDB/CST and $245,835 from Stone and Webster for activities to advance the project in the negotiations with Synfuels Corp. At the time of the report, this project was the only eastern oil shale proposal that was still on the agenda of the Synfuels Corp. As a result of Congressional action in late December 1985, federal support from the Synfuels Corp. is no longer possible. Finally, Victor H. Carr, Eastern Shale Research Corp., described his firm's project, which is jointly supported by DOE ($227,749) and the Indiana EDB/ CST ($73,850) and is entitled "Feasibility Study to Determine Suitability of an In-Situ Process to Recover Hydrocarbons from Eastern Shale." An area in Scott County, IN, had been chosen, but not a specific 9 x 15-m (30 x 50-ft) site. One burn of a small in situ retort is contemplated as part of the project. Besides these three projects, several reports on shale research were presented. Joseph Damukaitis, American Syn-Crude Corp., reported that a pilot plant using the hydrogenation-extraction (H-E) process (described at the 1984 Eastern Oil Shale Symposium) was 94% built and would go through shakedown with oil shale but would then shift mechanical devices to process coal mine waste. Current status of research on the HYTORT process was then presented by Raymond C. Rex, Jr. Oil shale beneficiation research at the University of Alabama/Minerals Research Institute was reported by R. Bruce Tippin. Scott D. Carter discussed continued research on fluidized-bed retorting of shale at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory. Carl E. Roosmagi of DOE, Morgantown, reported on the oil shale research at the Morgantown Energy Technology Center (METC) laboratory. Henry J. Gomberg, Ann Arbor Nuclear Inc., discussed "Radiation Combined with Donor Solvents for Extraction and Up-Grading of Kerogen." Aurora M. Rubel and coauthor Eileen Davis presented results of research at the Kentucky Center for Energy Research Laboratory under the title "The Effect of Shale Particle Size on the Products from the Bench Scale Fixed Bed Steam Pyrolysis of Kentucky Sunbury Shale." Lastly, Maria Rockwell, Technical University of Nova Scotia, presented "Processing and Up-Grading of Low Grade Nova Scotia Oil Shale for Potential Use." A review of shale oil prospects by Gerald Parkinson in Chemical Engineering for Feb. 3, 1986, covers both western and eastern projects and includes a report that the US DOE is funding a few relatively small projects; most of the fiscal 1986 budget of $12 million for shale oil is for fundamental research. Projects include a $3.2 million three-year contract with Hycrude Corp. (Chicago) for development of the HYTORT process and a $1.2 million three-year contract with the University of Alabama's Mineral Resources Institute on beneficiation of eastern oil shale by froth flotation. The report incorrectly states that current projects include a total investment of $466 million in a pair of 18-month technical and economic feasibility studies for proposed projects in southern Indiana. Surface mining in arctic regions is characterized by many unique problems. Continuous and discontinuous permafrost (perennially frozen ground) occurs in most of the arctic and subarctic areas. Permafrost presents special problems of slope stability. Stability of permafrost depends on its temperature, moisture content, and material type. Permafrost slope fails due to solifluction, disturbance of ice-rich slopes, and liquefaction. Drilling and blasting of frozen ground present special problems. Depending on their degree of saturation with water, freezing soils and rocks have a number of important characteristics that affect blasting efficiency. Metals used in mining equipment and mining structures require special selection. At low temperatures, many steels lose most of their normal ductility and toughness (resistance to brittle fracture). This paper discusses engineering solutions to unique problems of arctic mining.

In addition to compliance with government emissions and reporting requirements, mining and mineral processing companies are increasing energy efficiency to reduce costs and become more competitive in the global marketplace. One of the major obstacles to identifying opportunities for increased energy efficiency is the lack of readily available data on energy use, and more importantly the energy use linked to production data, that identify energy reduction opportunities. As well as energy reduction, mining and mineral processing companies often struggle with the prediction of energy use, and are often penalized for under or over forecasting. Once again, it is the lack of timely information that makes this prediction difficult. This paper looks at expanding the use of a Manufacturing Execution Systems by integrating with Energy Solutions. This will provide automatic, timely information, at a granularity that makes it easier to identify energy reduction opportunities, reduce energy costs, and better predict energy use in a mining and mineral processing operation.

Management of mineral resources through land-use planning procedures is not a new concept, particularly at the local level of government. Colorado may well be one of the first states, however, to vigorously attempt to evaluate on both the state-wide and regional basis, mineral resource potential and to make certain that potential for mineral resources is included as one of the primary factors considered in the local land-use decision-making process. Less than a decade ago the only consideration given to mineral resource extraction, particularly aggregate resources, was whether or not they could be produced at the particular time they were needed. This attitude has now shifted to the other extreme, not only in Colorado, but other states as well, so that other interests, especially housing projects, mountain subdivisions, recreational and wilderness areas are gaining prime consideration in land-use decisions. Ideally, in a more acceptable median position, mineral resource potential would receive definite consideration at the local level.

Vibratory or oscillatory conveyors can be found in all types of industry, handling virtually any granular bulk material, often at elevated temperatures. These conveyors can be combined with other process functions, such as screening, cooling, drying and dewatering, while conveying. Although construction and installation is relatively simple, the engineering and design analysis of the vibratory mechanics is fairly complex. This paper will discuss the basic types of vibratory conveyors and the analysis of the material movement along the carrying trough.

Performing a magnetizing roast in a furnace or kiln is a well-established technology. However, the use of microwave heat for the magnetization of hematite in the beneficiation of ferruginous bauxite is a new approach. This paper reports on an investigation of this procedure, which is followed by comminution and magnetic separation. The results of this investigation indicate that a nonmagnetic product containing 80% A1203 and 2.5% Fe203 with a recovery of 80% can be made from a crude bauxite ore containing 55.9% A1203 and 5.6% Fe203. This product is suitable for refractory use. The mechanism is explained by the ability of the microwave radiation to heat specific points within the bauxite. These heat-specific points are at the location of iron minerals. In a reduced atmosphere, the microwaves promote faster conversion of the iron minerals to a magnetic phase, which improves the magnetic-separation process.

INTRODUCTION In the early 1950s, underground miners and tunnel¬ing contractors were experimenting with ways to supple¬ment or eliminate track-bound loading and hauling equipment. Diesel-powered crawler and rubber-tire mounted front-end loaders and trucks designed for use on the surface were being modified and tried with limited but encouraging success. Miners began working with interested manufacturers to explore the develop¬ment of vehicles specifically designed to meet the de¬mands and constraints of underground material han¬dling. By the mid 1960s, load-haul-dump (LHD) vehicles were firmly established as a fundamental part of what has become known as the "trackless" mining concept, used in many mines and many countries around the world. The flexibility, mobility, and versatility of these units have given the industry a useful tool and have added new dimensions to mine development and produc¬tion. Many old mines have been redesigned to accom¬modate these trackless vehicles, and few new mining plans have failed to find some use for the concept during some phase of development and production. By 1977, several manufacturers in several different countries were producing a variety of LHD vehicles to meet the growing worldwide demand. GENERAL DESCRIPTION LHD vehicles combine certain characteristics of conventional front-end loaders and dump trucks, spe¬cifically designed for materials handling in underground mining and tunneling. The design intent is to provide one vehicle with one man, with the vehicle loading itself, hauling the load over level or inclined haulageways, and dumping the load. A typical production cycle of the most popular units has the operator driving the vehicle forward, forcing the bucket into the muck at or near floor level, and using the tractive effort of the vehicle and the prying action of the bucket to roll out and tilt back the load as shown in Fig. 1. With the bucket rolled back into the carrying position on the boom and the boom resting on the main frame of the vehicle, the load is hauled (trammed) to the dump point as shown in Fig. 2. At the dump point, the boom is raised, the bucket is rolled forward, and the load slides out as shown in Fig. 3. After dumping, the bucket is rolled back to the carrying position, the boom is returned to rest on the main frame, and the unit is driven back to the loading point for another load. There are two other types of LHD units that are slightly different in the cycles that they perform. One uses a hopper arrangement carried on the front of the machine, with a small bucket mounted ahead of the hopper. Several passes with the small bucket load the hopper, which is dumped by opening its floor. Al¬though this concept is several years old, it has gained less than 0.5% of the total market. The most recent LHD concept differs in that it has one bucket nesting inside another. The smaller inner bucket is loaded first, and it is then tilted back and above the larger bucket. When the larger bucket has been loaded, it is rolled back, and the total load is trammed to the dumping point. The dumping operation tilts the buckets in the reverse order from that of the loading operation. The impact of this new concept on the mining industry has not been measured yet. This chapter concentrates on the LHD vehicles employing the cycle described by Figs. 1 through 3, since these LHD units constitute an estimated 99% of the units in current use.
