The town of Green River, Wyoming, is located along the Green River on an arid plateau at a elevation of 6,300 feet. Green River has become the center of a booming soda ash industry. The rapid development of coal, oil, and gas resources, coupled with the soda ash boom, have created growth pains for the area. Green River and Rock Springs have experienced a 20-25% population increase in 1973 alone. However, public officials, business leaders, and local citizens are taking positive steps to ease the problems relating to housing, schools, medical services, and recreational facilities. What Is Soda Ash? Soda ash is one of the most widely used chemicals in the world. It is an important raw material in the manufacture of glass, paper, soap, petroleum products, metals, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, plastics, and a host of other items essential to every day living. In ancient times, soda ash was obtained from water solutions of various desert earths. Later, it was produced by leaching the ashes of wood and seaweed. For the past 100 years, it has been manufactured by the ammonia-soda process, which employs large quantities of salt, limestone, and coal as raw materials.

The Mission Unit of American Smelting and 'Refining Company is located in Pima County, Arizona, approximately twenty miles southwest of the City of Tucson. The Unit consists of an open pit copper mine and concentrator. The concentrate is shipped by rail to Company Smelters at Hayden, Arizona, or El Paso, Texas Mine stripping began at Mission in the fall of 1959, and construction of the 15,000 tons per day concentrator gas started in the spring of 1960, The first ore was treated in mid summer of 1961 and full ore production was reached in August of 1961. At that time over 46,000,000 tons of material had been moved from the pit. Current production (ore and waste) averages over 100,000 tons per day. Total production to date (ore and waste) over 120,000,000 tons.

Many methods of evaluating the efficiency of mineral separations have been described in the literature. In most cases, these present the efficiency as a single number. This paper argues that single-number measures of efficiency are inadequate because they seldom allow reliable comparisons, and are unlikely to correspond to the optimum operating conditions. To realistically make comparisons, it is necessary to distinguish the particle-induced component from the equipment- induced component. In a number of situations where the separating property can be identified (such as in gravity concentration and classification), this can often be done. However, in more complicated systems, such as flotation, this has not been possible. A technique is described whereby particle and equipment contributions to efficiency can be distinguished without the need to define the separation property. Because smelter schedules define a boundary correlation between grade and recovery, they generate some of the better single¬-number measures of efficiency, but even these have limitations.

Thank you Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen of SME-AIM? for this opportunity to talk to you about, one of the most interesting and challenging facets of our mining industry. Because the need was then -we built in 1964 what is still today, one of the most sophisticated AC mining machine simulators for this or any industry. It simulated the electrical controls and circuits of an AC shuttle car. The student activated the controls on the main console, which represented the elementary control and power circuits. Its accompanying slide-tape program, student manual and worksheets provided our customers with an effective and highly motivational means to teach their face mechanics: 1. practical AC circuit and motor theory 2. print reading 3. troubleshooting techniques Nearly 10,000 men have put in over 100,000 manhours of training on the AC panel and its DC counterpart. The DC panel was modeled after the 14BU10 Loader. The success of these larger panels pointed out the need in our industry for an orangized, basic electrical program designed around mining machinery components & circuits. But probably more importantly, they brought to light the tremendous thirst for upgrading by our industry's employees. We then turned our attention to developing programs around very basic panels. The resulting programs were designed also to assure maximum student involvement.

This paper discusses factors affecting the productivity of continuous coal mining operations. It analyzes design and operational relationships in continuous mining systems, and investigates how their productivity can be improved by selecting the number of headings, the dimensions of pillars, and the depth of cuts as well as the miner loading rate and tramming speed, the shuttle car payload and hauling speed, and the roof bolting cycle time. A computer simulator has been found very efficient in analyzing effects of section layouts and equipment operating characteristics on the productivity of continuous coal mining systems.

Borates are essential to life, and to many products that are essential to an acceptable standard of living. They occur naturally in seawater at an average concentration of five milligrams of boron per liter. Fresh water lakes, rivers, streams and ground water generally have concentrations of about one milligram boron per liter. Borates are also present in soil at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to three milligrams of boron per kilogram. Because most of that boron is locked into insoluble minerals, clay or organic matter, boron deficiency is more widespread than boron enrichment. Borates evaporate into the atmosphere from seawater, rain, snow and hot springs. In rain and snow, natural boron concentrations range from 0.002 and 0.1 milligrams boron per liter. All told, boron moves through the atmosphere at a rate of 5 Mt to 7 Mt/a (5.5 million to 7.7 million stpy).

On the basis of favorable salt characteristics, primarily compressive strength and impermeability, solution-mined cavities can provide structurally stable isolation chambers for waste. Solution mining techniques are established for storage of hydrocarbons. The proposition of waste isolation in engineered salt cavities is similar to this practice relative to characterization, certification and safeguards. What materials are isolated and how operations are conducted are principle differences. Compatibility of wastes with other wastes must be considered, but hazards can be precluded by avoiding certain mixtures. Waste material characteristics and cavity considerations are discussed.

The Congress gold property, located near Goldbridge, B.C., is extremely refractory with most of the gold disseminated in fine- grained arsenopyrite. Metallurgical testwork conducted by Giant Bay Biotech Inc. indicated that biooxidation pretreatment was capable of increasing cyanide gold recovery from the ore to greater than 90%. To determine if the bioleach process could be successfully scaled up, a 225 cubic meter commercial size bioleach reactor was built and tested at the mine site in 1989. At that time the tank was the largest bioleach reactor ever operated. This paper discusses our experiences in operating the tank, summarizes some of the data obtained and describes the problems encountered.

This study attempts to compare the costs of transporting coarse coal by pipeline, versus the more conventional use of belt conveyors. Hydraulic conveying of crushed (not pulverized) coal has not had widespread commercial acceptance. However, there is little doubt that the technology is available, so that, should this method be proven economical for a given application, implementation of this technology will become more acceptable. Hydraulic transport by pipeline between the mine stockpile and the coal preparation plant, for distances normally considered practical for an overland belt conveyor, should be an ideal application. In this application there is no need for dewatering facilities at the receiving end of the pipeline, because, the receiving screens at the plant serve this purpose. Further, clarified water from the preparation plant can be recirculated back to the mine, a plus for water resource and environmental considerations.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. "As the concept of autonomous haulage systems (AHS) moves from proto-types to production-ready applications, the operating performance of the haul road will become ‘mission critical’ to the overall success of autonomy in mining. Deterioration in road performance will require remediation, human intervention and significant, albeit temporary, changes to operating procedures, to accommodate road maintenance. With autonomous trucks comes the opportunity to reduce road formation and operating width, and therefore generating potentially significantly reductions in stripping ratios and improvements to mine economics, but only if the design of the road, and it’s associated deterioration rate, is predictable and manageable, based both on the materials used to construct the road and the maintenance interventions to be carried out on the road. This paper presents the assessment of a digital photogrammetric approach to the characterization of a mine haul road surfacing, or wearing course material. Design and maintenance parameters for these roads are currently determined from physical particle size distribution (PSD) assessments of ‘in-road’ material. However, this approach does not accommodate the need, nor leverage the benefits from, AHS. The digital imaging approach is assessed in this paper, using two standard digital analysis software tools, together with in-service mine haul road wearing course samples and images which are assessed to determine the applicability and reliability of the approach to deliver a real-time assessment of haul road surfacing conditions and thus to identify the road maintenance interventions required to address deterioration. INTRODUCTION Enhancements in mine road design, construction and management for the past 20 or more years has largely been focused on short-term tactical needs. These improvements have not been matched by advances in the fundamental technologies that underpin mine road design and management, and although the quality of mine roads have probably increased, many of fundamental and longer-term issues have yet to be addressed. With AHS’s evolving from prototype to production applications, any decision to implement these systems in a mine requires a thorough evaluation of impacts, not only operational improvements, but the inter-connectivity of this autonomy technology to other organizational processes. In developing an understanding, the full interactions that may affect autonomous truck behaviour due to changes in various sub-systems or external environments, haul road conditions and operating performance is a key consideration. This is as true in autonomous as well as in conventional mine truck-based hauling systems where the mine haul road network is a critical and vital component of the production process."

Non-renewable mineral raw materials are grouped into three categories to investigate ways leading to sustainable use of natural resources: 1.) metallic resources, 2.) non-metallic resources with the exception of the fertilizer minerals, and 3) the fertilizer minerals for the nutrients nitrogen (N), potassium (K), and phosphorous (P). With the exception of minerals in Group 3 which are essential for plant growth, mankind does not need raw materials as such, only the intrinsic property of a material that fulfils a useful function. This is especially true for non-metallic materials. Metallic resources have the best chance to become renewable if one makes optimal use of the resources of the man-made technosphere. For the fertilizer elements K and N there does not exist a problem, because sea water or air respectively provide an inexhaustible source for them. This does not apply to P however. So P is serving as one of our apposite case studies for solving sustainability challenges. For all the challenges along the road from a non-sustainable to a sustainable resource economy technology can be envisioned to come to the rescue provided conditions that are considered to be essential for sustainable use for all natural resources-- affordable renewable energy and human ingenuity to find new solutions for functions, to optimize processes and to minimize losses-- are satisfied.

The Uetliberg Tunnel in Switzerland is the longest tunnel in Zurich?s new Western Bypass Expressway, connecting the Birmensdorf bypass in the west with the existing Zurich-Chur national motorway in the east. Thus the tunnel links the Zurich-West motorway interchange with the Zurich-South interchange (shown in Figure 1). The Uetliberg Tunnel project comprises two parallel tubes, each about 4.4 km long. The two tunnel tubes are connected every 300 m by a transverse walkway and every 900 m by a transverse roadway (Figure 2). The SOS niches are spaced 150 m apart. Portal stations with machinery rooms are located at the west and east portals. The tunnel falls with a gradient of 1.6% from the west portal at Wannenboden to the east portal at Gänziloo. The Project costs are about CHF 1.12 billion. The carcass construction started in March 2001. The Opening of the Uetliberg Tunnel is planed in spring 2009.

ABB offers complete electrical revamps of mining shovels with ac or dc drives, drive control, frequency converters with insular gate bi-polar transistor technology, intelligent control packages and visualization. Many of the world’s shovel excavators and draglines (walking excavators) were built in the1980s. After 15 to 20 years of round-the clock operation in openpit mines, these machines start to feel their age. Electrical parts are particularly vulnerable. Their performance deteriorates and availability and productivity fall. Even with regular ser-vice and maintenance, a machine of this age will accumulate 400 hours of unscheduled downtime a year. The need for a replacement becomes pressing, but the expense is often prohibitive.

At the request of the Mine Safety and Health Administration, a quantitative assessment of the risk of lung cancer associated with occupational exposures to diesel exhaust was performed. This assessment was primarily based upon the results from a study of the effects of chronic inhalation exposure to diesel exhaust in Fischer-344 rats (previously reported by Mauderly et al., 1987). An adaptation of the Armitage-Doll multistage model, which allows for an age-dependent effect of exposure, was used to model the tumor response data. This model was fitted to all tumors (benign and malignant), and to malignant neoplasms alone. Estimates of unit risk (potency) were derived based upon a linear approximation to the results from the multistage model. A biologically equivalent dose was developed to scale the results from airborne exposure in rats to humans, which was adjusted for differences in weight, ventilation rate, deposition fraction, and the percentage of time actually exposed. Comparisons are made with risk estimates derived from modeling other rat inhalation bioassays and from applying different models to the study by Mauderly et al. (1987). We emphasize that our risk estimates are based upon a series of assumptions and carry a great deal of uncertainty. In particular, uncertainties regarding the effects of exposure on lung clearance mechanisms, the deposition rates in humans, and the relevance of our exposure index limit our confidence in these risk estimates. Because of these uncertainties, this risk assessment would best be viewed as an exploratory effort. Key words: Diesel, lung cancer, risk assessment

Enhanced gravity separation appears to be one of the most promising methods for processing all types of <200-µm coal feeds and tailings. Systems based on this technology are reviewed, and the results of investigations based on C900 Multi-Gravity Separator tests conducted to assess the treatment of <200-µm, extremely difficult-to-wash coal settling pond tailings are presented. Multi-Gravity Separator processing tests of ultra-fine tailings with a high clay particle size content (22.6% <10 µm and 60.1% <40 µm) and a 69.56% ash content show that this material can be effectively treated after desliming (<10 µm) of clay-size particles to produce a coal with a 20.6% ash at a separator combustible material recovery of 69.3%. Desliming is shown to be critical in reducing coal ash content and combustible material recovery. Similar improvements are anticipated in the recovery and separation pro-cesses for other enhanced gravity separation systems from the desliming of feeds. Although not a conventional form of treating Multi-Gravity Separator data, the existence of well-defined polynomial relationships based on the product of drum shake amplitude and shake frequency relative to product coal recovery, product ash content and yields at varying wash water flows is demonstrated. Low-amplitude and intermediate- to high-frequency bed agitation are shown to produce optimum ash reduction results.

This paper details an investigation into the feasibility of recirculating mine exhaust air in Saskatchewan potash mines. This project was initiated following a previous study at Ruttan Mine, Manitoba, which indicated that recirculation of exhaust air to reduce winter heating costs was feasible. The potash industry was selected for study because the mines use a minimum of blasting in their production methods and the exhaust temperature is significantly higher than that of most metal mines. These factors simplify the monitoring system required and have the potential for greater waste heat recovery. A series of measurements of underground mine pollutants was made at the main exhaust and intake shafts in order to determine the feasibility of introducing controlled recirculation of exhaust air. An experimental recirculation circuit was created by opening two existing doors situated between the return and intake shafts. During this recirculation trial, the air quality parameters at the intake, mixed intake and exhaust measuring stations were monitored. The results obtained from a questionnaire circulated to the regulatory agency and the major potash producers together with results obtained from underground field studies at Central Canada Potash (CCP) Division of Noranda Minerals indicated that controlled recirculation of mine exhaust air has potential application in these mines either to reduce heating costs and/ or to increase the face air quantities. A recirculation system is to be designed in conjunction with CCP and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour, Mine Safety Unit to attempt to implement a working recirculation system for CCP.

The possibility that a hypothesis explains almost all observed facts may be satisfying. Yet the almost gives a distinct sense of uncertainty. Moreover, overlooking the almost, reliance on the favored hypothesis may close our eyes to the discovery of new information and, in the field of mineral exploration, to the possibilities of finding new and hidden ores. A case in point is that of mines such as the Elizabeth and Ely, along the copper belt in eastern Vermont, principally in Orange County. The geology of the Strafford Quadrangle, where the Elizabeth Mine is located, has been described by Doll (1944). Two informative papers (McKinstry and Mikkola, 1954, Howard, 1959) present much valuable information about the geology of the Elizabeth Mine. Both reach the conclusion that the ores were emplaced after the peak of metamorphism, through the agency of metal-bearing hydrothermal solutions. Both, therefore, conclude that the source of the ores was somewhere below the outcrop area, presumably in some hidden intrusive mass. Neither yields a satisfactory guide for further exploration. Howard (1959) cites geophysical observations which show that there is a mass with a density similar to that of granite under the Strafford dome, adjacent to the Elizabeth Mine on the West. Yet examination of gneissic granite in the Chester dome, 25 miles to the South gives no suggestion of a young, near-surface intrusive capable of carrying or mobilizing large quantities of sulfur and metals. Metallurgical processes involving the use of cyanide such as gold cyanidation, metal plating and flotation, generate effluents containing cyanide and cyanide in complex combinations with heavy metals in quantities exceeding those regarded as being safe for discharge into streams. A new process for destruction of free and complexed cyanide and related-species in wastewaters has been developed at the Inco research laboratories using sulfur dioxide, air and lime. High reaction rates are obtained in the presence of a small amount of copper which acts as a catalyst. Cyanide species can be reduced to as low as 0.1 mg/L in a very short treatment time. Examples of treatment of gold mill effluents and barren slurries, plating rinse waters and flotation liquors or tailing slurries are given.

This paper describes recent ground control challenges encountered at the longwall recovery areas of one of Bailey Mine?s two longwall faces and the proactive measures taken by CONSOL management and engineering to mitigate them. The challenges derived primarily from the following causes: (1) irregular roof coal and draw slate thickness, (2) presence of thick sandstone at the recovery area and extremely weak rocks below the sandstone, (3) close proximity to a regional anticline, (4) low shield set pressure and tip load, and (5) ineffective primary roof support that led to progressive failure of the headgate roof. The presence of the anticline contributed to extensive fracturing of the sandstone. Excessive pot-out in advance of the shields frequently occurred near mid-face due to the presence of thick draw slate and irregular roof coal near the recovery area. This, in turn, resulted in face heights that exceeded the maximum reach of the shields. Subsequently, during longwall meshing, when the advance rate slowed considerably, fractured sandstone would often break loose, causing the shields to yield, thereby reducing the height and inhibiting shearer movement. To improve the headgate and face conditions within the longwall recovery area, several actions were taken, including: (1) assessing site-specific roof geology by conducting in-mine roof coring around the recovery areas and by mapping immediate draw slate and roof coal thicknesses within surrounding entries, (2) increasing pump pressure and thus shield set pressures (3) diligently monitoring shield set pressures and longwall extraction horizon, (4) installing additional cable bolts and roof screening to prevent progressive failure of the immediate headgate roof, (5) fully-grouting supplemental cable bolts to improve headgate support stiffness, and (6) gluing the headgate roof within the recovery areas with polyurethane. As a result of these collective efforts, longwall recovery delays at Bailey Mine were reduced from 21 days in 2006 to nearly zero in 2009.
