The capabilities of the analog computer, the Mine Ventilation Simulator, installed at WHA's Safety and Health Technology Center in Denver, Colorado, are discussed. General opera- ting procedures are described showing how a mine model is produced, and how the model can subsequently be modified to produce a solution to a mine ventilation problem. A sample problem is included to illustrate the technique. The important role the Mine Ventilation Simulator plays in ventilation training is discussed, including experiences with the education of students at the Colorado School of Mines. This paper includes a summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of the analog technique and suggests some design criteria for application to future development of analog computers, based on experience gained with the Mine Ventilation Simulator.

"Underground refuge alternatives (RAs) require an air source to supply breathable air to the occupants. This requires pressure relief valves (PRVs) to prevent unsafe pressures from building up within the RA. The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) mandates that PRVs prevent pressure from exceeding 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5 in H2O), or as specified by the manufacturer, above mine atmospheric pressure when a fan or compressor is used for the air supply. Research to date by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) suggests that the design and implementation of PRVs used in RAs has not yet had sufficient performance analysis or technical development. In response to this need, NIOSH tested a variety of PRVs using an instrumented test fixture consisting of data acquisition equipment, a centrifugal blower, ductwork, and various sensors to determine if subject PRVs meet the MSHA requirement. Relief pressures and flow characteristics including opening pressure and flow rate were measured for five different PRVs under a variety of conditions. Subject PRVs included two off-the-shelf modified check valves, two check valves used in MSHA-approved built-in-place (BIP) RAs, and a commercially available valve that was designed for a steel RA and is currently being used in some BIP RAs. The test results showed relief pressures ranging from 0.20 to 1.53 kPa (0.8 to 6.1 in H2O) and flow rates up to 19.3 m3/min (683 SCFM). INTRODUCTION The Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) was enacted in the wake of three mine explosions/fires that claimed 19 lives that year. Intended to help improve underground coal mine accident preparedness, the MINER Act includes provisions that target mine safety issues in areas such as emergency response planning, adoption of new technology, training and education, and mine safety standards enforcement [1]. Section 13 of the MINER Act specifically directed NIOSH to provide for research into the effectiveness and viability of refuge alternatives (RAs) for underground coal mines. This mandate culminated in the 2009 adoption of changes to 30 CFR mining health and safety regulations, requiring underground coal mines to provide mine emergency RAs and associated components, to provide a life-sustaining environment for persons trapped underground. Such RAs can be either self-contained mobile units or built-in-place (BIP) facilities. The regulatory changes also include provisions establishing requirements for Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) approval of RAs and their components, and among these provisions are numerous criteria for providing a safe breathable atmosphere under positive pressure within the RAs. One specific criterion for maintaining a safe RA atmosphere requires the inclusion of an air pressure relief valve that will activate at a maximum of 1.25 kPa (0.18 psi or 5.0 in. H2O), or at a pressure above mine atmospheric pressure in the RA as specified by the manufacturer when the breathable air is supplied by a fan or compressor [2]."

In many multiple-sulphide ore flotation processes, it is desirable to concentrate each of the various valuable minerals into separate products. Although there are a variety of techniques and chemicals which can be employed to produce efficient separation, two basic types of flotation circuits are used: The Differential Flotation Circuit and the Bulk/Selective Flotation Circuit. Figure I depicts these two circuits in their most simplified form for the production of two concentrates and one tailing product. If three or more valuable minerals are present in an ore, a variety of combinations or extensions of these two basic flowsheets may be used. There are many examples of the successful application of both circuit types with ores containing similar minerals. Each ore must be tested individually to decide on which circuit is best. However, the following general statements can be made: 1) The differential circuit will have higher capital and operating costs than will the bulk/selective circuit due to higher rougher capacity requirement. 2) The differential circuit will achieve better separation than will the bulk/selective circuit since it is usually easier to reactivate a depressed mineral than it is to depress an already active mineral. If the deactivation problem with the bulk/selective circuit . . in can be overcome, there is a clear economic argument for its use

The United States continued to depend on imported bauxite during 1995. Domestic bauxite mine production remained at about the same level as in 1994. It amounted to less than 1% of total world production. All of it was used for nonmetallurgical products, such as abrasives, chemicals, proppants and refractories. Metallurgical grade bauxite was imported from 12 countries. Principal suppliers for this 10 Mt (11.1 million st) of ore were Guinea (39%), Jamaica (35%), Brazil (17%) and Guyana (8%). The average value of imports, c.i.f. US ports, was $31/t ($28/st). Calcined refractory-grade bauxite imports totaled235 kt (259,000 st). It had an average value of $112/t($102/st) c.i.f. US ports. China supplied 61%, Guyana30%, Hong Kong 4% and France 3%. Imports of other grades of calcined bauxite, primarily for the abrasives market, totaled 259 kt (286,000 st).They were supplied by China (59%), Greece (20%), Brazil (14%) and Australia (6%). The average value was$74/t ($67/st) c.i.f. US ports.

An advanced coal preparation plant has been built at Homer City, Pennsylvania, by Pennsylvania Electric Company, a subsidiary of General Public Utilities Corporation, and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation, as an alternative to utilizing flue gas desulfurization technology to meet the Federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources air quality emission regulations of 4.0 lb S02/106BTU for the two (2) existing coal-fired generating station Units No. 1 and No. 2, and a 1.2 lb S02/106BTU for the new Unit No. 3. The coal preparation plant is designed to process 5,200,000 tons of run of the mine coal annually and has a design capability to process 1,200 tons per hour via two (2) equal capacity 600 tons per hour preparation circuits.- The plant is designed to produce multi-product coal streams consisting of a middling product of medium ash and medium sulphur content, which is environmentally compatible to support operation of the two (2) existing generating Units I and 2, and a deep cleaned, low ash, low sulphur coal product capable of environmentally supporting the ambient air quality requirements of the new Unit 3 generating facility. The waste product from the process consists of high ash, high sulphur reject material. The process has the acronym MCCS (Multi-Stream Coal Cleaning System).

Powerful, yet inexpensive, personal computers running Windows-95 operating systems provide powerful mine-wide monitoring capabilities when properly engineered. Long awaited conductivity over LAN, phone and Internet links provide new dimensions for sharing information throughout an operator's organization, in- deed around the world. On-line data analysis, archival data storage and historical trend viewing generate shared inputs to production, safety and maintenance personnel. Five years in development, Rel-Tek's new EZ-Trol/W-DX system was engineered around the pilfalls of a Windows environment. It now offers higher speeds, 3D animated graphics and long distance telemetry - all with better reliability than ever before possible. The ubiquitous DDS utility inherent in most Windows was discarded in favor of a lightning fast RAM format. Several ponderous interpretive programs were redesigned into a single compiled entity, thus avoiding the overhead from message conversion, handshaking and transfer. To make the system user friendly, a 'Wizard" utility helps operators set up and reconfigure their systems on site. In-mine data acquisition telemetry was also re- vamped, incorporating a unique noise avoidance scheme, dubbed the "DX" bus - enabling longer distances and higher reliability. 12- bit analog conversion provides the enhanced resolution needed for field scaling auto-cal sensors. By mid '96, eight EZ-TROLMI- DX systems were up and running, several for more than a year. Factory updating and assistance are possible over a phone or Internet link. Our factory testing of components routinely includes actual operation at 2400 BAUD over 14 miles of twisted pair wires.

The HydroFloat technology was specifically developed to upgrade phosphate sands that are too coarse (>0.6 mm) to be efficiently recovered by conventional flotation methods. In this novel process, classified feed is suspended in a fluidized bed that has been aerated using an external sparging system. The air bubbles selectively attach to particles that have been made hydrophobic through the addition of a fatty acid collector. The teetering effect of the fluidized bed forces the low-density bubble-particle aggregates into the overflow, while hydrophilic particles are rejected as a high solids content underflow Since the HydroFloat is actually a density separator, the process can treat much coarser feeds than would be possible using traditional flotation processes. In addition, the high solids content of the teeter bed promotes bubble-particle attachment and reduces the cell volume required to achieve a given capacity. This paper presents test data from ongoing pilot-scale trials of the HydroFloat cell in the phosphate industry.

The safety of personnel is the most important matter during a mine fire. However, there is not enough research on a case when a fire occurs near a shaft and the behavior of the fire gas is not well understood. Therefore, a series of experimental study using a scaled ventilation circuit model was carried out. The behavior of ventilation air during a mine fire near a shaft was investigated. The model consists of two vertical shafts, three horizontal ducts connecting the shafts and an exhaust fan from the shaft bottom. The cross section of the shaft and duct is a square of 200×200mm. The height of the shafts is 3400mm. The length of the ducts is 1540mm. The lower duct is set at the same level as the shaft bottom. The middle and upper duct are set at 750mm and 1760mm above the shaft bottom respectively. The airflow rates through the ducts can be adjusted by regulators installed in each duct. The behavior of the fire gas was measured by anemometer, thermometer, and visualized using laser light .The air was ventilated downward in both shafts before the initiation of the fire. Some amount of fire gas of high temperature rose upward gradually along the shaft wall regardless of the downward ventilation after the initiation of the fire. Then the direction of main ventilation air suddenly reversed upward in the shaft. The direction of ventilation reversed in many places in the model and the fire gas reached even the part not anticipated.

The western industrial world has to rely more and more on complex polymetallic sulphide ores as sources for base metals. These ores are composed of fine grained sulphide minerals such as chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite, pyrrhotite and marcasite. The liberation sizes of the individual minerals can range between 30 um and 5 um. Therefore, applying conventional techniques to recover these finely disseminated minerals usually results in unsatisfactory metallurgical performances with high losses of the valuable mineral to the slime , fraction of the tailing. New concepts for treating these polymetallic complex ores are discussed in this paper. Beneficiation techniques utilizing new reagents and a new approach to pulp preparation are described. Some of these techniques were applied to ores from existing concentrators as well as to new ores. The results of these studies are discussed in the following sections.

This paper presents a history of the planning, engineering and construction completed for the railroad tunnel crossing part of the West Elizabeth Avenue Storm Drainage Project, undertaken to relieve flooding within the West Elizabeth Avenue area in Linden, NJ. The Railroad Crossing Contract is part of the larger Linden Drainage Improvements Project consisting of a new gravity storm sewer system. The improvements are required to provide additional storm drainage for the City of Linden and the Merck Pharmaceuticals manufacturing facilities in the City of Linden.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

Every year the United States consumes millions of dollars worth of abrasive materials as blasting media. Entrained in either a gas or liquid stream or propelled by paddles or wheels, they are directed onto the surface of another material to modify that surface. The modifications to impacted surfaces include cleaning, cutting, deburring, etching, finishing, and peening. Blasting media can be either organic or mineral abrasive materials. Information and data presented are for only a portion of the mineral abrasives, they are; fused aluminum oxide, coal slag, copper slag, garnet, metallic shot and grit, nickel slag, olivine, silica sand, silicon carbide, and staurolite.

Previous efforts to remove and concentrate heavy-metal ions from wastewater streams via metalloprotein affinity metal chromatography (MAMC) were limited to the metal transport protein transferrin. Extension of the technique to the enzymes carbonic anhydrase and carboxypeptidase A, which possess different metal affinity properties, is described. Preliminary results indicate that the technique is capable of selectively removing and separating late first-row transition metal ions from aqueous solution. The results suggest that by properly choosing the matrix, i.e., protein or enzyme, MAMC may he applicable to problems involving a wide range of heavy-metal-hearing aqueous solutions.

My subject is gold price forecasting and monitoring as an important aspect of gold marketing. While I 'm specifically addressing gold, it is understandable that many other commodities could be readily substituted. Gold marketing must be studied as three distinct processes, and it is my intention to cover each of these processes in turn. First I?ll cover the process of gold price monitoring and forecasting in some detail. In order to select a method, or combination of methods, to be used to sell gold a determination of the future price profile is essential. The profitability of the sales effort will be determined, to a large extent, by how accurately the future price behavior of the gold market has been forecast.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

Welcome to Chicago and to the first North American Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference. It is a great privilege for me to serve as the Chairman of the Executive Committee of such a Conference. We are here because of the rapidly mounting interest of technicians the world over in turning the potential use of underground space into sensible and economical benefits to people. This Conference certainly provides a major forum of international importance and scope for the exchange and dissemination of up-to-date knowledge on the technology of underground excavation and tunneling. The discussions will also surely delineate the immediate and longterm challenges we must approach in multidisciplinary force. We must exercise leadership in the problems we are trying to solve. Your program shows the breadth of the technical discussions which are going to be underway here during the three days of this Conference. I am not going into technical aspects or detailed discussions of the many uses to which underground space may be devoted. I also will leave to the technical meetings the outline of the state of the art. But I do want to tell you of the progress being made in channeling the expertise of many of the world's foremost authorities on rapid excavation and tunneling to consider the problems, laying the ground work for needed research, and provide the leadership in converting unused subsurface potentials to improve the quality of life. "The Langmuir model has been widely used for the coal-methane sorption process via an isothermal test. However, even though the temperature-dependent Langmuir model were recognized theoretically and experimentally, the quantitative relationship between the Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature have not been clarified and confirmed by lab test data. This paper collects 158 methane-coal sorption data under different temperatures, which apply the Langmuir model to consider the relationship between Langmuir’s constants (a & b) and temperature (see APPENDIX I). Even though the Langmuir model cannot be used to show the physical state of methane adsorption on coal, it is widely used because of its simplicity and the reasonable explanation of its parameters (a & b). The results from these published isothermal tests confirm that 1) there is no consistent relationship between Langmuir’s constant-a and temperature; 2) the Langmuir model is a temperature-dependent model, and the temperature-dependent feature is mainly shown by the relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature; 3) The relationship between Langmuir’s constant-b and temperature can be described by both the exponential and linear relationship with dried coal. This paper provides a database for temperature-dependent Langmuir’s model, which can be used for reservoir simulation of coalbed methane reservoir, coal seam degasification modeling for underground coal mines considering the heating effect induced by geotherm and heat injection (via hot water, hot steam, ultrasonic, etc.). INTRODUCTION The isothermal test for gas sorption on coal is one of the fundamental tests in Coalbed Methane (CBM) recovery fields, such as underground coal mine methane degasification, CBM gas-in-place estimation, and carbon dioxide sequestration in un-minable coal seams. Generally, two methods, volumetric and gravimetric, are employed to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012). Based on these two approaches, a series of commercial and self-assembled instruments are built and several calculation methods are used to obtain isothermal data (Bush, A. & Gensterblum, Y., 2012, Gasparik, K., 2014; Goodman, A. L., et al, 2004; Zhang, L., et al, 2013). In the post-processing stage, many models are provided to analyze isothermal data in order to understand the storage mechanism of gas in coal. Common models include the Langmuir model (and its extended forms), the pore-filling model, multilayer adsorption model (BET), and the Gibbs’ model. To reduce fire hazards from spontaneous combustion of coal in longwall gob areas, a series of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations were conducted by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to model the spontaneous heating of coal in longwall gob areas. The previous modeling results demonstrate that spontaneous heating of coal usually occurred behind the longwall shields and along the face with a bleeder ventilation system. Assuming a stationary longwall face, the spontaneous heating could turn to a spontaneous fire in several days for the most reactive coal under favorable conditions. When the longwall face advances, the spontaneous heating process will be significantly affected. In this study, the effect of longwall face advance on the spontaneous heating in the gob area is investigated using the CFD model developed in previous studies. One longwall panel with a bleeder ventilation system is simulated. The width of the panel is 300 m, while the length of the panel is changed between 1,000 to 2,000 m. The same permeability and porosity profiles are used for gobs with different lengths. The spontaneous heating first develops in the gob when the longwall face is stationary. Then, the face advances at a certain rate. The face advance is simulated as a series of discrete movements, and the effect of the face advance on the maximum temperature developed during the face stoppage is examined. The author was the banquet speaker at the 48th Annual MPD meeting, sponsored by the SME Colorado Minerals Processing Section, May 14-16, 1998, in Colorado Springs, CO. Here are his remarks. It has been an exciting experience to have spent 34 years involved with the process of generating patented technology eventually leading to commercialization. In today's terminology, this process is called technology transfer. I have had the unusual experience of being involved doing basic research as an inventor while also being responsible for managing new product development and commercialization. In addition, I worked for 31 years before my retirement for a large research-oriented company, The Dow Chemical Co. In 1995, the company spent more than $1 billion dollars on research and development. The last three years of my career have been spent working with a research-oriented university, The University of Florida. And I have worked as a consultant helping several companies to optimize their products and processes. It is on this cumulative experience base that the preparation of this article is based.
