INTRODUCTION In 1979 the Committee on Radiological Protection and Public Health of the Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD) defined a programme of work needed to improve radon dosimetry and monitoring. A Group of Experts in this field was established by the NEA and at the first meeting of the Group the authors were designated an initial task with the following terms of reference:- To review dosimetry of radon, thoron and their daughters, and in particular:- - to examine analytical models for the assessment of dose to individuals who are exposed to aerosol mixtures of these nuclides; - to examine the state of knowledge of the characteristics of aerosol mixtures of these nuclides and other factors that influence the dose to the lung, and identify those parameters which should be measured for dosimetric purposes in radiological surveillance programmes; - to identify areas where further study or research are needed. In this presentation we attempt to examine, with these objectives, the relationship between exposure to radon and thoron daughter aerosols expressed in terms of the working level month l (WLM), or its SI equivalent, and dose accumulated by sensitive tissues of the lower respiratory tract. Over the past two decades many attempts have been made to calculate the lung dose equivalent to l WLM exposure in mine atmospheres, usually in terms of the maximum dose to basal cells in a small part of the bronchial tree. The calculations have employed variously detailed models of airway anatomy, aerosol deposition, ciliary clearance and dosimetry of tissue at the bronchial surface, and are well reviewed elsewhere (Walsh, 1970; UNSCEAR, 1977; Jacobi, 1977; Fry, 1977). They agree in the conclusion that basal cells in segmental bronchi (between about the third and fifth bronchial generations) receive the highest dose, although estimates of this dose differ by more than an order of magnitude, ranging from about 0.2 to 12 rads per WLM (2 mGy to 120 mGy). The most critical parameters of these models are the assumed depths of basal cells below the bronchial surface and the fraction of the WL carried by free ions. When more realistic values of these parameters are substituted (Jacobi, 1977), the dispersion in calculated maximum doses to basal cells is reduced to give a much smaller range from about 0.3 to 1 rad/WLM (3 to 10 mGy/WLM). The parameters and methods employed in these various models, however, remain too diverse to infer the sensitivity of the dose conversion to practical variations in aerosol characteristics and the additional factors determining lung deposition and clearance. We have therefore taken the approach of developing newer models (Jacobi and Eisfeld, 1980; James et al, 1980) that can encompass the range of available experimental data on the physical and biological behaviour of radon and thoron daughters and also accommodate the different interpretations that can be put upon them. The evaluation of aggregate and industrial mineral processing plants requires the following steps when projecting cost saving opportunities: collecting background data, conducting a base-line evaluation, analyzing specific unit-operation performance, defining investment options, prioritizing the selected improvement opportunities and the implementing process changes. The following paper describes the approach and challenges of developing an improvement plan for a dry and wet mineral processing operation.

A gas company operated more than 100 distribution stations. Mercury filled manometers were used for years in these stations to measure the flow of natural gas through the system. Use and handling of these manometers resulted in mercury spills and ground contamination. To assess the human health and environmental effects of these spills and the need of remediation, it was important to determine mercury specific species present and their concentrations. Soil samples were analyzed for total mercury, methyl mercury, inorganic mercury and elemental mercury. These analyses served as important input in the risk assessment performed for these stations.

The Velvet mine is located in the Big Indian district of the Colorado Plateau. The general area, also known as the Lisbon Valley district, is about 65 kilometers southeast of Moab, Utah and about 120 Kilometers southwest of Grand Junction, Colorado. As shown by the slide, the Velvet area is typical of the high desert of the southwest United States. The elevation at the decline collar is 1,967 meters above sea level. To date, the Velvet has produced 1.5 million kilograms of U308 and 2.1 million kilograms of V205. The current production averages over 4,000 metric tons of ore per month. Access to the Velvet mine is by a 1,160 meter long decline. Fresh air is supplied through the decline and a 152 centimeter cased borehole. Contaminated air is removed by two 152 centimeter cased boreholes. The east side of the mine is mined using a conventional room and pillar method; whereas the west side is mined as combination conventional and random room and pillar,

A method for stabilizing mercury containing waste for landfill disposal would be a very cost effective solution for industry. A mercury polythiocarbonate material which is made via a metallurgical process passes a traditional TCLP for mercury. The mercury polythiocarbonate material was subjected to a more thorough evaluation, the Integrated Leaching procedures as described in Kossan (1) and Sanchez (2)The procedure involves leaching the mercury polythiocarbonate material at varying pH and sample size to liquid. The procedure had to be adapted for small sample sizes and finely divided materials due to the product characteristics and available material. The leachates were evaluated and found to be stable within common environmental pH values. The performance details on how Inter-Mountain Labs met the leaching requirements of the procedures and the analysis of mercury are presented.

When considering the mill drive system for a grinding application, a large number of questions must be answered. Depending on the mill size and type, the mill can be driven by several configurations of drive systems: a single low-speed motor connected to a pinion driving a ring gear, two low-speed motors connected to two pinions and driving a ring gear, or a gearless motor mounted directly. In addition, a gear drive system can have a reducer placed between a high-speed motor(s) and pinion(s) or a power path splitting pinion stand. In some designs the reducer is integral with the pinion stand driven by a high-speed motor. The technical and commercial implications of several mill drive options are presented. Initial cost, cost of installation, cost of commissioning, and cost of operation and maintenance are presented for each drive option considered. The impact of each drive system on the design, cost and operation of the overall plant electrical system is discussed. Also, consideration is given to mill drive availability, and the potential cost resulting from delays in plant production.

According to statistics compiled by the National Safety Council, US Bureau of Mines, American Medical Association, and other agencies, accidental injuries cause more deaths than all the leading diseases. No one is immune to an accident. Probably the best way to describe an accident is to say that it is an unexpected happening. The automobile driver is not expecting a terrifying crash, the electrician does not expect to be electrocuted, nor is the coal miner expecting the roof to fall on him. All personal injuries will not result in death. There is a multitude of victims who are living proof of what accidents can mean to an individual-victims who are blind, paralytic, missing arms, legs, etc. In most instances the earning power of these individuals is gone, and they are utterly dependent upon family or welfare. For many years there seemed to be an attitude that prevailed in industrial America that accidents were inevitable, and that so many fatalities and injuries should be expected. This, of course, was utter nonsense. Since the birth of such organizations as The National Safety Council, American Society of Safety Engineers, and. the US Bureau of Mines, much progress has been made in reducing accidents. The enactment of compensation laws greatly contributed to the progress that has been made. Does this mean that all accidents can be prevented? Unfortunately, it does not. Human psychology indicates that men will work unsafely or perform unsafe acts for the following reasons : 1) Lack of knowledge or skill. 2) Conflicting motivations, such as: (a) to be more comfortable, (b) to save time or effort, (c) to be accepted by a group. 3) Physical or mental condition. Nearly everyone desires his own safety, but not all individuals are willing to do what they know to do to insure their own safety.

The Kipushi deposit, where the Prince Leopold Mine has been installed, belongs to Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga and is located in the Belgian Congo, 20 miles SW of Elisabethville, at the vicinity of the Northern Rodhesian Border. The deposit is of the hydrothermal metasomatic vein-type; mineralisation took place, through the limestone of the, lower Kundelungu. This is a special fea¬ture of the deposit, compared to the other copper deposits of the neighbourhood, both in the. Belgian Congo and in Rhodesia. Actually, the primary mineralisation of these other deposits; is directly related to the stratigraphic systems: schistous dolomitic in the Belgian Congo and Roan in Rhodesia. Both facies are older than the Kundelungu and separated from this formation by a tectonic cataclysm. The valuable elements occuring at Kipushi are principally copper; and zinc. The deposit also contains smaller quantities of lead, precious metals and other elements including germanium.

I reached New York at the start of my second South American adventure on Jan. 9, 1916. In the Anaconda office I found that we were not to take the steamer for two weeks which gave me time to study reports on Potrerillos and Corocoro. Reno Sales, whom I had met in Butte only casually, was to go with us to South America. Though he was only a little older than I, he was already an unquestioned leader of our profession, and we became and remained good friends. William Braden was in New York and would return to Santiago with us. Tom Hamilton would also be returning from a vacation. Leighton Stewart, a young engineer who was to work for Braden, was going on the steamer with us, taking along his wife. And of course Dr. Ricketts would go along. He had just become engaged to John Greenway's half sister, Kate Greenway, and in order not to be away from her longer than was necessary, he did not reach New York until a day before we sailed. This made eight of us who would be in the party. We were to go to Corocoro first, as Braden had taken an option on the Chilean company there. Development was already under way. As reports came in by mail we tried to get as good an idea of the property as we could before the actual examination. Mr. Thayer "put us up" at India House, one of the best lunch clubs in New York, and Reno and I ate our lunches there almost every day. Thayer, Braden, and Cornelius Kelley, who was to succeed Mr. Ryan as president of Anaconda, joined us when they could. At the lunches they told us about the under- ground war in Butte a few years earlier. When I wrote my chapter on the Butte wars in Romantic Copper more than 15 years later I could not help being biased a bit by my friends, all of whom were on the Anaconda side. But their opponents in the Clark and Heinze camp were just as biased in their comments on my book.

In May, 1966, the General Services Administration (GSA) announced a program to encourage additional domestic production of copper in the interest of national security. Upon learning of the copper production expansion program, Duval Corporation entered into negotiations with GSA for development of the Sierrita copper-molybdenum property under the program. Agreements between the GSA and Duval Sierrita Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of Duval Corporation, were concluded in 1967, with the Sierrita Concentrator beginning operation in 1970 at a designed capacity of 72,000 STPD. Subsequent additions and modifications have expanded capacity to 90,000 STPD. This property, located approximately 20 miles south of Tucson, Arizona, represents an investment including working capital of about $200 million. These funds were provided from an $83 million loan from GSA, repayable in copper valued at 38 cents per pound, $48.75 million of bank loans subject to U. S. Government V- loan guarantees, and Company capital contributions. Current general operating statistics for the concentrator are listed below: Ore Grade 0.32% Cu., 0.030% Mo. Separation of dolomite from Florida phosphates was achieved by first conditioning the feed with fatty acid at pH 10 followed by reconditioning at pH 4 or below, before flotation. Observed selectivity of this two stage conditioning process was attributed to the amount as well as changes in the nature of the adsorbed collector species upon reconditioning. In this paper, bench scale flotation results of optimizing the major process parameters, such as reconditioning pH and collector dosage, for upgrading natural high dolomitic phosphate samples from Florida are discussed.

Thermodynamic calculations based on a rigorous mass balance technique have been carried out for the chalcocite-potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) system. The results of the calculations are used to: i) construct Eh-pH diagrams for KEX additions ranging from 0 to 10-4 M, ii) determine the amounts of cupric ions and copper xanthate formed at different Eh and pH values to make three-dimensional diagrams, and iii) determine the minimum KEX addition required to form CuX and CuX2.. This allows prediction of the optimum conditions for flotation and comparison of this with microflotation test data. In addition, voltammetry experiments have been conducted on chalcocite electrodes at pH 9.2 and pH 6.8 in order to gain information on the role of metastable species in flotation. On the basis of these experiments, possible reaction mechanisms are discussed and comparisons are made with what is expected on the basis of thermodynamics.

Environmental considerations are extremely important in planning and carrying out mergers, acquisitions and real estate transfers. It is not inconceivable that potential or actual environmental liabilities could exceed the targeted company's net worth or the book value of the real estate of interest. It is therefore essential that an environmental due diligence investigation (DDI) be performed to quantify environmental liabilities before sales, mergers or acquisitions. This paper will discuss general procedures used in environmental due diligence investigations. The emphasis will be placed on mergers and acquisitions. It should be pointed out that the procedures discussed in this paper are general and must be modified to fit each particular merger or acquisition under consideration.

Silicon Carbide and Aluminum Oxide were two of the early forms of man-made abrasives often referred to as synthetic and were invented at the turn of the century. Edward G. Acheson invented Silicon Carbide in 1893 and Charles F. Jacobs filed a patent for the manufacture of fused alumina from bauxite in 1900. Jacobs' patent provided a method for tempering the alumina by reduction and fusion to a degree of hardness and toughness suitable for abrasive purposes. These two inventions are the basis of the synthetic abrasive industry today. Improvements have been made in the equipment used in the process, however the process itself remains basically the same. In 1904 A. C. Higgins observed that hot spots developed on the shell of the pot furnace used in the reduction of bauxite. He found that by spraying water on the hot spots they could be prevented and, in addition, they failed to return in the same place. Higgins reasoned that the cooling effect of the water caused the melt contacting the metal shell to freeze as an insulating autogenous refractory. This suggested that an improved furnace design could be obtained by using a metal shell which is continuously flooded with water on the exterior surface. Paradoxically, a furnace required to contain tons of molten Aluminun Oxide was thus constructed of nothing but a sheet steel shell with no refractory lining at all. A test of such an arrangement was tried by Higgins with considerable trepidation and was found to be extremely satisfactory.

Asbestos, an extremely useful natural resource, has been studied extensively mineralogically and for industrial application. Its extraction from ores has been greatly improved with respect to safety in the work place. In spite of that, there is a decisive effort in many countries to ban its use on the grounds that it is a toxic substance. This action resulting in drastic decrease in production and the possibility of destroying the industry. The chelation of asbestos with organic dyes seems to be a promising way to abate its toxicity. Dyeing can be done when the fibers are slurred in water at ambient conditions in the same way as textile fibers.

The paper will describe a number of developments and innovations now in use in microtunnelling machines. These include the use of fuzzy logic steering systems, the proven ability to successfully undertake complex curved microtunnel drives, the ability to complete ultra long drives using microtunnelling techniques, and machines with access to the face of the machine from inside the machine. The ability to tunnel in relatively hard rock utilizing a rock head with back loaded cutters changeable from inside the microtunnel machine and the ability to utilize microtunnel machines in multi modes, such as hard rock mode, “open” mode, EPB mode, and slurry mode with the same base machine again with access to the face of the machine will be described. In addition, the latest computer technology gives the operator “full visualization” of machine functions together with the ability to data log machine operating parameters. Reference will be made to a number of projects worldwide recently completed or under way where these innovations have successfully been utilized.

The semi-variogram, the basic tool of geostatistical estimation procedures, must itself be estimated from the available data. From a numerically simulated two dimensional deposit, with known variability expressed through its semi-variogram, the standard arithmetic mean estimator is used to calculate experimental semi-variograms. These are determined on a series of data sets obtained from the deposit with various sampling grids which cover different areas of the deposit and which have a wide range of available data. The orders of discrepancies between estimated and theoretical semi-variograms are determined in this idealized situation; and this provides a basis against which to assess experimental semi- variograms made on field data.
