The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

This paper discusses briefly the evaluation of chrysotile asbestos deposits in ultramafic rocks. Such deposits are limited to serpentinized peridotite and/or dunites. The purpose of any evaluation is to determine whether a deposit contains sufficient ore mineral to justify profitable exploitation. Dimensions of a mineral zone are established by conventional methods, such as mapping, ground magnetic surveys, diamond drilling or underground exploration. The value of the contained asbestos fibre Is dependent on numerous physical properties such as fibre length, strength, flexibility, as well as the actual amount of fibre present. The determination of grade is difficult. The Quebec Standard Test (Q.S.T.) is used to grade fibre according to the proportionate lengths of fibre present. A method of visual vein counting allows calculation of an approximate percent fibre together with a simulated Q.S.T. Various drilling methods are discussed, diamond drilling is favored. Bulk sampling is required to determine fibre quality. Correlation of visual techniques and laboratory methods are often difficult. Reasons for any variance are discussed. Underground bulk sampling of most potential ore zones is strongly recommended to confirm the viability of the property. Evaluation of slip fibre deposits requires greater reliance on laboratory testing as visual methods are difficult to apply. Cross fibre has greater inherent strength.

Excellent underground industrial sites and warehouse facilities have been constructed in Europe and at several locations in the United States. Many quarry and mine operators are considering, or should consider, the possibilities of the development of their mineral properties in such a manner as to make underground space that is suitable for a secondary industrial use. Before proceeding with mine or quarry development, the operator should answer the following questions: 1) Is there a need for underground industrial space in your geographical area? 2) Is your deposit suitable for development of space for industrial usage? 3) If the deposit is suitable, what methods of development can be used? 4) What are the comparative economics of the different methods of space development? An honest analysis of the first two questions may eliminate the need for proceeding to the third. Affirmative answers to questions 1 and 2 should be followed by the engineering and economic studies required in response to questions 3 and 4.

The efficiencies of plant scale comminution processes are often evaluated by various indices that are calculated and/or measured somewhat independent of the performance of any associated downstream froth flotation processes. In order to compare some specific comminution factors such as energy utilization, media consumption, equipment utilization time, etc. comparisons of comminution efficiency independent of flotation behavior are appropriate. However, as more and more detailed plant level information is gathered on the joint and highly interactive nature of comminution and froth flotation, it is becoming increasingly obvious that knowing and using simple efficiency indices are not enough. What is needed are more performance related measures of the efficiencies of the combined size reduction -froth flotation system for effective plant level economic optimization to occur. The purpose of this paper is to present some examples of important interactions that influence the joint efficiencies of size reduction and froth flotation processes.

Introduction Coal has always been China's predominant energy resource. The country ranks among the three richest countries in coal reserves in the world, next to the US and the Soviet Union. According to China's Ministry of Coal Industry (MCI), coal accounted for about 72% of the total national energy consumption. Despite efforts to increase the output of oil and hydropower, coal is predicted to remain dominant on the energy scene by increasing its share to 77% by the turn of the century. To match the rapid growth in the agricultural and industrial sectors, MCI has targeted the coal industry to double coal output from 600 Mt/a (660 million stpy) in 1981 to 1.2 Gt/a (1.3 billion stpy) by the year 2000. How is this goal to be achieved? According to MCI, it will be accomplished by: • building new underground and surface mines with a total output of 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); • increasing the output of existing state-controlled mines from the present 344 Mt/a (368 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy); and • developing and increasing the output of small, local mines run by province, county, and production brigade from the present 276 Mt/a (304 million stpy) to 400 Mt/a (440 million stpy). Building new underground and surface mines New underground coal mines will be developed in areas where the coal industry has already made headway and infrastructures currently exist. This is to optimize hardpressed capital spending on investment. Ten existing coal production bases were selected in nine different provinces that met these requirements. The underground mines scheduled to be constructed in stages at he existing coal production bases will have a total output of 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy) by the end of the century. Regarding surface mines, four mines in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and one in Shanxi province have been earmarked for construction during the same period. By the year 2000, these surface mines are expected to produce 200 Mt/a (220 million stpy). Foreign equipment, machinery, and surface mine stripping technology were all involved in different degrees in the development of the five new surface mines. Some have signed joint venture agreements. Occidental Petroleum Corp. is in a joint venture with China in developing Ping-shou's 15 Mt/a (16.5 million stpy) Antaibao No. 1 open-pit. The Shentou power station, situated nearby, is anticipated to consume 3.2 Mt/a (3.5 million stpy) of the coal it produces. Some is designated for export. Increasing output There are 554 state-controlled mines that have been in operation since before 1980. They produce 344 Mt/a (379 million stpy). To increase capacity, MCI has laid out some guidelines. • Coal prospecting near existing mines must be given top priority and intensified so that workable reserves can be increased. This would lengthen the mines' useful life. • Many mines and slopes that were constructed during the 1950s are very small and densely populated. These small mines and slopes are generally very short along the strike. As a result, coal faces and levels require frequent

The US Constitution provides for regulation by the states for protecting the public's safety, health, and welfare. Hence, in the eyes of the law of all states today, this is the sole justification for registration of professional engineers. Wyoming was the first state to register professional engineers in 1907, to correct abuses of incompetent or fraudulent practices in surveying and real estate. Public safety and health are most directly affected by civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Other branches of engineering have a profound effect on the public welfare, including investors, and safety and health of employees. No arguments, pro or con, are valid except in relation to the registration laws of various states. Code of Ethics Few would argue the desirability of requiring conformance with a code of ethics. A major problem lies in enforcing compliance, since protecting the public demands a high standard of competence, yet assessing competence gets confused with restraint of trade. Bidding engineering work on price competition can lead to pressure to cut corners on engineering quality, and was therefore discouraged by codes of ethics. The Supreme Court, in a suit against the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), barred any engineering society from such bidding restriction. It has, however, upheld the right of states to impose codes of acceptable practice as part of registration laws. For example, Texas Canon I reads, "The engineer's paramount professional responsibility should be the safety, health, and welfare of the general public." Anything less makes the code practically meaningless, but there are potential conflicts of interest in many engineering organizations. How can conflicts be handled? Any corporation could improve its public image by adopting a policy that each employed PE should, without fear of recrimination, record in writing over his seal any problem or flaw in any design that comes to his attention. The policy should further require that his superior provide him a written reply pointing out that the "flaw" is accepted as requiring correction or as a calculated risk, or overruled as erroneous or as a difference of opinion. Errors in calculation of judgment are inevitable. Despite this, there are limits to how much time and money should be spent to eliminate them. It is difficult, however, to see any excuse for failure to conscientiously evaluate the opinion of a PE. This may be an impossible ideal, but how else can the profession or the industry have credibility? The National Council of Engineering Examiners (NCEE) has a code of ethics one presumably subscribes to by signing an application to write a Principles and Practices examination. However, NCEE has none of the power of enforcement that is available through state boards of registration. Registration Qualifications Qualifications are set by the laws of the states. In general, they require passage of an eight-hour examination in fundamentals, preferably at graduation, and, later, one in principles and practices. The examinations are compiled and distributed by NCEE. This system provides for a high degree of uniformity and reciprocity. States set the education and experience levels (typically four years after graduation) required by those desiring to write the principles and practices examination. Examinations The principles and practices examination calls for answering eight of 20 equal weight questions; one on engineering economics, 19 on engineering. Economics may enter into engineering questions, but only provided the question is not answerable by an economist without engineering training. In preparing examinations, NCEE strives to use questions that require some judgment and can be more effectively answered by someone with four years experience beyond college. Technical innovation in electrical and electronic equipment with new functions and design, stimulate consumer?s purchasing desire towards the latest equipments and this leads the rapid increase in the production of increased amount of waste materials Treason et al (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category; this emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. Recycling of electronic waste is an important subject not only from the point of waste treatment but also from the recovery aspect of valuable materials. However, recycling of electronic scrap is still quite limited due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al. 2005). A bioleaching based process offers a number of advantages compared to the conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). The advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and eco-friendly approach besides, generation of less active leach residue then other metallurgical processes. Though, biohydrometallurgical process has been successfully applied for the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al. 2003; Rawling 2000), data pertaining to its application for the extraction of electronic scrap is still scanty. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for extraction of metals from electronic scrap/printed circuit boards (Brandl et al. 2001; Faramarzi et al. 2004; Choi et al. 2004, Ilyas et al. 2007; Ilyas et al. 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans) or cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has the following advantages: (i) ability to grow under higher pH, and thus is more suitable in bioleaching of alkaline solid waste (ii) a generally faster leaching process with shorter lag phase (iii) Chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g. organic acids) with metal ion, thus reduce its toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller et al. 1993; Aung and Ting 2005). Getting the best match between truck and haul road requires examination of many factors and their effect on the bottom line. Most mines use a bottom line measure based in some way on cost per ton of material moved. This measure focuses on the two components of truck haulage cost per ton: productivity (or performance) and operating cost. Productivity can be measured or predicted for specific tasks using either field measurement or modelling. Individual tasks can be combined to provide a larger scale, longer term net figure for total mine output. True cost is more difficult to capture as they are time and task oriented and can be influenced by a summation of factors over a truck lifetime. For example, "allocated" costs, such as owning (depreciation) and some repair costs, are spread over long periods of time. Other cost, such as fuel and tires can be tied more directly to certain tasks such as fuel and tire cost. This paper focuses on the more direct, task-oriented factors that affect truck productivity and cost.

Detailed characterization of all the powder constituents during powder processing is necessary for the reproducible manufacture of ceramic components that will perform reliably in intended applications. In this paper, selected physical and surface chemical techniques for characterization of silicon nitride powder are evaluated. The characterization data are discussed in the context of how these data, through their influence on powder processing unit operations, can affect the final microstructure. In the forming of ceramics, some of the major variables of injection molding are evaluated. Accurate measurement and control of these variables is emphasized for manufacture of Si3N4 ceramics with a high degree of reliability.

The consumption of grinding media forms a significant part of the operating cost of a mineral processing plant. An estimated half billion pounds of steel in the USA and over one billion pounds in the world are consumed each year in wet grinding alone. However, there is some conjecture as to the interacting roles of abrasion and corrosion. In order to provide a more complete picture of the conjoint action of abrasion and corrosion, marked ball tests were conducted on different grinding ball compositions in a laboratory ball mill and the metal losses were measured on varying the conditions, i.e., pH, PO2, in wet grinding a Cu-Ni gabbroic rock and compared with taconite grinding. Ball wear rates ere discussed with respect to ball composition and microstructure and the varying conditions used in the grinding tests.

Phosphate mines in Florida are continuing to encounter higher dolomitic content host rock with the phosphate pebbles(1) necessitating a change in grinding conditions and/or circuits, One of these changes is to install hydrocyclones and close circuit the mill as opposed to the traditional open circuit grinding plant. Close circuiting of the grinding mill with hydrocyclones allows one to take advantage of reduced process mill power requirements by circulating the coarse mill discharge back into the mill for multiple chances of particle breakage. Additionally, as in this case, the hydrocyclones de-slime the pebbles, allowing for more efficient use of grinding power by reducing the amount of dolomitic material recycled to the mill.

The Witwatersrand reefs provide excellent examples of chemical and structural control on gold distribution. All mined gold appears to coma from a carbon -gold association and/or Fe-S-Au association, and also from immediately above or below unconformity surfaces. A total raliance on the current syngenetic model for Witwatersrand gold does not appear to be justified from the accumulated data and may be responsible for missed opportunities during exploration: consideration of other models is suggested especially where they better fit the data. The stratabound natura of Witwatersrand gold 1& critical to mining, but is emphasized in syngenetic models to the virtual exclusion of many other important observations. By analogy with other deposit types, stratabound character is probably a poor guide to genesis.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed a model to estimate diesel particulate (dp) exposures in underground mines. The estimate uses either in-mine measured dp concentrations or engine manufacturers' standardized emission data and through a series of calculations estimates full shift dp concentrations by applying standard engineering principles of ventilation, control technology and work cycle. This model, in the form of a computer spreadsheet, provides the mining industry with a method to estimate diesel particulate levels and determine the impact of various diesel particulate controls on occupational exposure to dp in underground mines. A detailed description of the estimator and several examples demonstrating the results are provided.

Water is a necessary part of our environment. It is a biological necessity, but more than that, it is a necessary part of our life style. Those of us who live in the north woods expect water to be part of the scene. There are few natives of this region who would be content to eliminate the streams, the lakes, the marshes, or our forests. Throughout the world, water has been so much a part of man's environment and man's adaptation to life has been so closely tied to water that our way of life and ways of accomplishing our work include water as an essential tool. The production of taconite is an example of our dependence on water. Other methods could have been developed to process taconite ore but the process methods chosen utilize water. Water is used for grinding and separation and for trans- porting the ore from one part of the process to another and for dust control. A typical large plant producing 10 million tons of taconite pellets per year will have on the order of 130,000 gallons per minute (8.202 m 3/51 of water in circulation in the plant. About 120,000 gal. per min. (7.571 m 31s) will pass to tailing thickeners where 110,000 gal. per min. (6.940 m 31s) is separated from tailing and returned to the process. About 15,000 gal. per min. (.9464 m 31s) goes with thickened tailing to tailing basin. My point is that there are great volumes of water in motion in a taconite plant,

"The reliable prediction of service lifetime of tunnel constructions is of essential technical and economic interest. Polymers used for tunnel liners have to fulfill the requirement of 100 years lifetime. However, today no reliably proven test method is available which confirms such long lifetimes. The current paper introduces a recently started research project which focuses on lifetime prediction of highly flexible, very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) for tunnel geomembranes. Different PE grades in combination with different antioxidant packages are conditioned at elevated temperatures and immersed in different media. Initial results confirmed significant material aging of unstabilized resins already after exposure of up to 34 weeks, at least at the highest exposure temperature of 80 °C. To consider application relevant material properties the material characterization was done by means of tensile tests and dynamic oxidation induction temperature tests. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for further investigation of antioxidant consumption kinetics. 1. INTRODUCTION For a reliable service of modern tunnel constructions a sustainable proofing against water infiltration is essential for the lifetime of the structure. Geomembranes made of polymeric materials have been used successfully for tunnel lining since several decades. Whereas previous geomembranes usually were made of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-P), due to several technical advantages today very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) has become a more and more popular material for such applications. For modern geomembranes, current guidelines expect minimum lifetimes of at least 100 years (ÖBV-Richtlinie 2012). In contrast to this requirement it must be considered that today no test methodology is available which reliably confirms such long lifetimes of polymeric materials."

The methods of burst control treated in the authors' very informative paper have been applied in the Ruhr Coalfield, Germany, for more than 20 years and have proved to be highly effective. It might be interesting here to mention a few experiences: • The symptoms of critical stresses when drilling with small diameters ("test drilling") are essentially the same as described. However, we consider the situation safe if these symptoms occur beyond a certain distance ahead of the face. • That safety distance equals three times the seam thickness plus the daily advance. It is the total seam thickness that counts, not merely the mined portion. • Critical stresses within the safety distance are dissolved by so-called destressing measures: drilling with heavier equip¬ment, blasting, or water infusion. • To avoid bump initiation, the destressing operations should begin at the sides of the stressed zone rather than in the middle. • As to water injection, there are two different principles. If the situation is critical already, high pressures are applied for hydraulic fracturing. If the stresses still allow to drill deep holes, the fluid pressure is kept low and acts for a longer time. This is to make the coal break successively instead of violently - a long-term precaution. • When the stresses are very high, destressing is the most appropriate means. We mostly drill with 95 mm-diam (3.7 in. - diam). The techniques in detail are somewhat complex and sub¬ject to modifications. But the general idea is to accomplish burst prevention by controlling the potential burst situations.

R. Michael Craig Mr. Juvkam-Wold's article is a timely and much needed presentation of the method of depressurization to reduce ground-water inflow into mine shafts. The article is very informative and discusses the effects of depressurization upon shaft inflows adequately. However, the article omits a discussion of another important benefit of depressurization: the reduction of potential for artesian burst or, as it is also called, floor heave. Confined aquifer systems (artesian aquifers) can contain water under several hunder pounds per square inch (psi) of pressure. For example, water levels at elevations of 455 m (1500 ft) or more above the top of the Westwater Canyon member of Reply by H.C. Juvkam-Wold In general, Mr. Craig's comments are useful and accurate regarding the potential benefits of aquifer depressurization. However, two of his points require further explanation since they may lead to a misunderstanding of my paper and its predictions. These refer to his comments regarding failure to account for storativity and to non-artesian conditions. Equation 5 is indeed Darcy's steady state equation. However, as a careful review of the appendix in this paper will reveal, I have used this equation to represent semi-steady state conditions.
