FirstMiss Gold installed a supervisory control system based on Pavilion Technology's Process Insights neural network software and Oil System's PI data historian. The primary goal of the system was to control the acid preconditioning circuit. However, our first successful control loop was on the limestone feed rate to the neutralization circuit. The information gained by modeling these circuits and the better control provided by the system has resulted in reagent savings of over $80,000 per month.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

"Pareto analysis was used to investigate the failures database of a Hitachi EX1900 hydraulic shovel over one year of continuous operation. The hydraulic system and hydraulic links, hoses and piping were identified as the most critical system and subsystem, respectively. A three-parameter gamma distribution function was identified as the best fit for a probabilistic modeling of the time between failures (TBFs). This distribution was used in a Monte Carlo reliability analysis of the hydraulic system. Autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), within the context of a time series analysis of the TBFs, was proposed as a viable alternative to the traditional technique of distribution fitting. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) metric was used to compare the two models. The MAPE value that resulted from the ARIMA was 66 percent smaller than that from the traditional technique in predicting the TBFs.Resumen ¦ Se usó análisis Pareto para investigar la base de datos de fallas de una pala hidráulica Hitachi EX1900 durante un periodo de un año de operación continua. "It is prudent to interpret atmospheric monitoring signals in real-time for checking the safe limits of the air conditions in underground mines. In gassy mines, such real-time evaluation increases the safety of operation. In all mines, the continuous monitoring and evaluation contribute to maintaining air conditions to be within healthy and safe limits. Signal interpretation for safety conditions in mines is difficult for many reasons. An increase of hazardous contaminant concentrations can be predicted by signal pattern recognition, root-cause analysis of rapid changes toward deterioration and forward prediction in time using algorithms and numerical models. This paper focuses on analyzing signal patterns to recognize dangerous trends as well as forward predicting the various environmental and working conditions that may affect safety in underground mines. Efficient numerical ventilation model with heat and gas contaminant simulation components is needed for the analysis of real-time atmospheric monitoring data. Computational speed enhancement methods are discussed and tested in numerical examples, using the Jacobian sensitivity matrices for signal propagation prediction. INTRODUCTION The focus area of this paper is mine safety, related to hazardous atmospheric conditions in a mine ventilation system. Improvements by recognizing safety hazards caused by heat of combustible gases or the accumulation of poisonous gases in a mine are addressed. The recognition of safety hazard by manual evaluation is difficult because of the complex nature of information and the large amount of monitored data from measurement by atmospheric sensors such as air velocity, pressure, hazardous gas contaminants and temperature. In order to recognize problem-causing trends, it is necessary to evaluate continuously individual measurement data from the Atmospheric Monitoring System (AMS) of the mine during their time-dependent variations. In addition, the combined effects of various signal trends need to be simultaneously interpreted in their cross-effects. It is very difficult to foresee the possible outcomes of intertwined signatures of various problems by continuous human observation. For example, a steady, continuous methane concentration measurement together with a sharp drop in barometric pressure from the AMS sensors may be a case for worry in future time due to pressure-induced methane increase from the coal seam or the gob (Danko et al., 2013). This future increase can be predicted by a time-dependent Ventilation Air Model (VAM) and its surrogate Air Parameter Predictor Solver (APPS) model. A calibrated VAM or APPS model can indeed predict a likely methane concentration variation in future time as a function of previous and new air pressure as well as air velocity (Danko, et. al., 2013). Such a future trend, however, cannot be seen from the raw measurement data."

An induction time apparatus has been constructed in the present work which has a sensitivity limit of 100-150 micro-seconds. The basic unit is similar to the one used by Eigeles and Volova (1960) and Trahar (1983), but it operates with a micro-computer and has a greater sensitivity. Using this apparatus, the flotation chemistry of the quartz-amine system has been studied. It has been found that at a given dodecylamminium hydrochloride concentration, the induction time is at a minimum at approximately pH 10.5. At this pH, the collector hydrolizes to form neutral amine and the flotation recovery reaches a maximumy,suggesting that iono-molecular species are the surface-active species responsible for flotation. This finding confirms the earlier conclusions obtained using the surface tension (Somasundaran, 1976; Finch and Smith, 1973) and contact angle (Smith, 1963) techniques. The induction time measurements have also been conducted as a function of particle size, collector concentration, indifferent electrolyte concentration and temperature. The results are compared with flotation data, and the activation energies for the bubble-particle adhesion have been calculated.

A long recognized goal in high speed tunneling and mining has been the development of a continuous drill and blast excavation capability. Both the advance rate and the economy of drill and blast tunneling can be significantly improved if the conventional cyclic process can be carried out continuously. Obviously, any continuous drill and blast tunneling machine must be an "all function" device, performing drilling, explosive loading, initiation, mucking, ventilation, roof support (if necessary), and perhaps other functions, essentially simultaneously, while remaining at the face throughout. Furthermore, such a machine must do all these things under remote control. THE SPIRAL BLAST PATTERN Several continuous drill and blast tunneling concepts have been proposed. Of these the Rapidex spiral blast pattern, taking advantage of a partially self-shielding geometry, seems to require the least shielding and hence offers the maximum access for mucking, although from the outset it was clear that remote mucking would present a major design challenge. The Rapidex continuous spiral blast concept uses an unusual blasting pattern that, under the geological conditions tested, has proven to be an effective and efficient means of fragmentation. The concept has a self-shielding characteristic which permits a lightly shielded machine to remain at the face during blasting. The pattern produces a spirally proceeding tunnel face, much like one turn of an auger. The leading portion of the spiral surface is connected to the trailing portion by an axially extending plane surface or bench. The ideal geometry is illustrated in Figure 1 for a horseshoe tunnel section.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. Operating and maintaining the heavy equipment used in open-pit mining operations is an ongoing challenge for mines. Typical operations employ a combination of shovels, wheel loaders, and haul trucks to excavate and transport the material for further processing. As this is the first point of contact for the material after blasting, it is often a bottleneck of all downstream processes, thus, equipment uptime and efficiency is crucial. Automated systems for bucket tooth monitoring, payload measurement, proximity detection, and rock fragmentation analysis will be examined. The impact of these systems on operation safety, efficiency, and reliability, in real-world scenarios will be investigated. The process of managing all the above fleet of equipment in a mine can be streamlined by connecting the equipment monitoring systems to a central server. Using the central server, the distribution of this information can be automated to ensure that the right people see the data in a timely manner, improving both proactive and reactive responses to threats to safety and productivity.

Nast Tunnel is the first granitic rock tunnel to be excavated by a machine for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. The machine has excavated 7500 ft of the tunnel at this writing. There have been a few good performances; 31 ft in 1, 8 hr shift, and 75 ft in a 24 hr period, but generally, progress has been slower than that accomplished in the area with reasonable comparable conditions using conventional excavation techniques. Button cutters, now employed using compression as the means of fracturing the rock, gives an average cutting rate of 3 ft per hr. Disc cutters manufactured by the machine builders were tried briefly but the snap rings holding the discs to the hub failed. However, disc cutting rates of 6 ft per hr were recorded for short periods of time in a competent coarse grained porphyritic granite. The snuck was also considerably larger and more easily handled than that produced by the button cutters. Hughes Tool Co. is working on a disc type cutter and expects to have them on the cutterhead by mid June. LOCATION, DESCRIPTION AND BID OPENING Nast Tunnel is located 2 miles west of the Continental Divide and 39 miles east of the town of Basalt in Pitkin County, Colorado. The outlet portal is in the Fryingpan River Valley at an elevation of 10,000 ft. The tunnel is a 3 mile long, 10 ft diameter gravity flow water conveyance structure and a part of the west slope water collection for the Bureau of Reclamation, Fryingpan-Arkansas Project. The mining complex being analyzed consists of four mines and two processing plants located in an area where there are several existing modes of transportation. Figure 1 shows a map of the general layout of the four proposed mines and the two existing processing plants. The mines are identified by the numerals "I" through "IV" and the plants by the letters "A" and "B". A proposed overland conveyor would collect the product from all four mines and convey it to Processing Plant A. Alternate transportation systems are as follows: Railroad transport from Mines I and II to Plant B; Highway trucking from Mines I and II to Plant A; Off-the-road truck haulage from Mine III to Plant B and from Mine IV to Plant A. River transportation from the mines to the processing plants was not considered in this study under the assumption that the high capital investments for the loading and unloading facilities, in addition to difficult traffic problems, would make this mode of transportation unattractive.

The 2011 report titled ?Energy Critical Elements: Securing Materials for Emerging Technologies? by the American Physical Society?s Panel on Public Affairs and the Materials Research Society surveys potential constraints on the availability of these elements and identifies five specific areas of potential action by the United States to ensure their availability: 1) federal agency coordination; 2) information collection, analysis and dissemination; 3) research, development and workforce enhancement; 4) efficient use of materials and 5) market interventions. Energy-critical elements (ECEs) are a class of chemical elements that currently are critical to one or more new energy-related technologies. A shortage of these elements would significantly inhibit large-scale deployment, which could otherwise be capable of transforming the way in which energy is produced, transmitted, stored or conserved. The report addresses elements that have not been widely extracted, traded or used in the past, and therefore are not the focus of well-established and relatively stable markets (such as carbon in coal or uranium as fuels, copper, aluminum, nickel and iron, all of which are clearly vital in energy applications).

Any evaluation of economic net worth would be inadequate if determinations of a property's environmental liabilities and costs were omitted. Short-term and long-term costs can result from liabilities related to reclamation, water treatment, subsidence, and hazardous waste disposal. A structured, interdisciplinary approach can aid in the delineation, summation, and scheduling of these costs and liabilities.

Geothermal and operational reasons in the German coal mining industry make it necessary to an increasing extent to climatize coal faces and headings by means of refrigeration plants. Air coolers installed on coal faces as well as in gateroads play an important part in such climatization. They must transfer, under difficult conditions, the refrigerating capacity supplied by central or de-central refrigeration plants from the chilled water to the air in the workings. The performance data of two new types of coalface coolers and of two different types of gateroad coolers were measured in two testing stations under different thermo- dynamic conditions with dust-free fresh air. As air coolers must be installed particularly at working points with a high .dust load the heat exchanging surfaces are fouled for the most part causing an essential reduction of the refrigerating capacity. The investigations therefore were extended to measurements with a certain dust load in the intake air of the coolers.

Pyrometasomatic zones are a type of replacement deposit, normally in a carbonate rock unit, which consists of a zoned, coarse-grained, generally iron-rich mixture of calcium and magnesium silicates. These zones or rock masses are also called ?skarn,? and ?tactite?. They are formed as a result of the interaction of a shallow intrusion of magma with a carbonate or calcareous host rock and are considered to be of hydrothermal origin. Three environments of pyrometasomatic deposits are depicted in Figure 1. Of course, the interaction takes place at high temperatures. Pyrometasomatic zones are categorized as calcic or magnesian, depending on whether the intrusive interacts with a limestone or a dolomite. Common pyrometasomatic zone minerals are garnet, epidote, quartz, calcite, wollastonite, actinolite, hedenbergite and diopside. Pyrometasomatic zones are of considerable economic importance because they contain ore deposits of tungsten, molybdenum, copper, lead, zinc and iron. According to Rose and Burt (1979), the chronological sequence in the formation of a ?typical? pyrometasomatic deposit is as follows: 1. Shallow intrusion of magma at 900-700°C into carbonate sediments.

INTRODUCTION The British mining industry comprises 228 nationalised coal mines producing some 113 million tonnes of deep mined coal and employing 242,600 persons of whom 185,200 work below ground. There are in addition 174 small privately-owned coal mines employing 1500 persons underground and producing 1.5 million tones of coal. In the non-coal sector there are 108 privately-owned mines producing some 20 different minerals, including tin, wolfram, fluorspar, potash, rock salt, china clay, ball clay and fireclay. There are currently 4,100 persons employed in these mines of whom 2,346 are employed below ground. One mine producing potash employs 870 persons of whom 465 are underground workers. Since 1975 all matters relating to the health and safety of persons at work and of the general public who are exposed to industrial hazards have come within the purview of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The Mines and Quarries Inspectorate (MQI) is a constituent part of that organisation and enforces legislation applicable to all mines and quarries. The National Radiological Protection Board (NRPB) is a statutory and independent body that was established in 1970 to advance knowledge and provide information and advice about radiological protection. The NRPB has an agency agreement with HSE to provide advice and services relating to radiological protection, including protection against exposure to radon decay products in mines. There are as yet no statutory requirements controlling exposure to this source of radiation in Britain. Investigations for the presence of radon in British coal mines were begun in the mid 195Os. The concentrations found were of low order, typically around 2 pCi/l (Duggan et al., 1968). This was not surprising since big coal mines are well ventilated to control methane and airborne dust and it is now generally accepted that radon and its decay products do not constitute a health hazard in British coal mines. At one or two small mines where igneous intrusions were in close proximity to the coal workings, slightly higher readings were recorded. The MQI then commissioned NRPB to make investigations at metalliferous mines and in these much higher readings were detected. It was later agreed that the NRPB should undertake a survey of all non-coal mines in Britain to establish the extent of the problem. This survey was conducted mainly in 1973, (Strong et al.,1975) and follow-up surveys at various mines have since been conducted by the MQI. These investigations revealed that radon readings could be high in mines producing tin, haematite and fluorspar. Some small mines working other minerals in the same localities also showed high readings. More recently owners have been making environmental measurements at mines where there was some cause for concern. LEGISLATION AND RADIATION STANDARDS As a result of the survey work for MQI the Board in 1975 recommended an occupational limit of 4 WLM in a year from radon decay products together with a programme of radiological supervision (Strong et al., 1975). The MQI accepted the recommendation and advised employers and employees that the 4 WLM limit should be adopted. The limit corresponds to a concentration of 0.3 WL, equivalent to 30 pCi/l of radon-222 in equilibrium with the decay products, and was in accordance with an earlier recommendation by the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP, 1959). ICRP recommendations are usually endorsed in Britain. It was recognised that some years would probably be required to achieve general compliance, and this is proving to be the case. Some confusion has been caused in Britain by the conflict between successive Euratom Directives on this and other standards of safety. As relative newcomers to the Community, we were not affected by earlier Directives, but the situation is different now. In 1959, the Commission of the European Communities provisionally recommended a maximum permissible concentration for radon-222 and daughters of 3 x 10-7 µCi/cm3, which corresponds to 300 pCi/l (CEC, 1959). The number was affirmed in 1962 (CEC, 1962) and reaffirmed in 1966 (CEC, 1966) but without any specification of the state of equilibrium. In 1976, the CEC again recommended 300 pCi/l, but on this occasion, the daughters were assumed to be present in the same quantities as in unfiltered air (CEC, 1976): this implies 40 WLM a year in poorly-ventilated mines. The formula is repeated in the latest version of the Directive (CEC, 1980), but the value is now said to be an interim one because it might not ensure compliance with the appropriate dose limit. ICRP (1955) recommended 300 pCi/l in equilibrium with the decay products in 1955 and reduced this value to 30 pCi/l for unfiltered air in 1959 (ICRP, 1959), endorsed it for equilibrium conditions in 1976 (ICRP, 1976), and held to it until 1980: these values imply respectively 40 and 4 WLM a year. The recent recommendation of the ICRP (1980) that the annual limit of intake for the decay products should be 0.02 J in a year corresponds to 5 WLM, but there is a rider that reduction should be made for exposure to gamma rays and long-lived airborne radioactivity. An allowance of 20% is suggested for uranium mines, implying 4 WLM a year for the decay products. The

Radian Corporation (Radian) has developed a process for treating Cr(V1)-contaminated soils that involves: 1) soil washing using an alkaline extractant, 2) biological reduction of Cr(V1) to Cr(II1) in the soil wash effluent, and 3) separation of Cr(II1) from the biologically treated effluent. Biological treatment has been demonstrated for immobilized cells in fluidized bed bioreactors and suspended cells in slurry bioreactors for Cr(V1) levels ranging from 30 to 600 mg/L which have been reduced to non-detectable levels (< 0.05 mg/L; method detection limit [MDL]) during hydraulic residence times as short as 12 hours. The resulting Cr(II1)-containing effluent stream was chemically treated to precipitate chromium hydroxide for removal by physical separation.

A detailed breakdown of capital and operating costs is an essential element in the planning and evaluation of any mining project. The OPCOST System was developed by Golder Associates to provide mining engineers with the facility to synthesize detailed cost estimates for all aspects of an operating or potential open pit mine. The system can also be applied to underground mines equally as well. Such estimates can be prepared at a variety of levels depending on the detail required by the project. The OPCOST System is a suite of computer programs linked through a common hierarchical data base. It simulates the thought and reasoning processes within the quantity takeoff and cost estimation phases of a mining project. The system was developed as a mining cost engineering tool on the basis that it would have to satisfy a variety of purposes, namely:

Conventional mine safety wisdom states that "the most efficient mines are also the safest." Since the 1980s, small mines (and contractors) have been targeted as the most dangerous because of their fatality records. However, statistical analysis of West Virginia safety and production data from 1993 indicated that, when considering the correlation between accident severity and tons mined per employee-hour worked, the most efficient mines were, with the exception of very small mines, not the safest operations. This paper presents the results of an extended analysis of West Virginia mine safety using 1993 and 1996 data and concludes with the method used to suggest current priorities for focusing interventions.

This article updates data from minecost.com which detail the specific carbon dioxide emissions for over 200 mines producing 90% or more of western world copper, zinc, lead and nickel in 2009. This data shows the potential impact on mine economics of proposed carbon taxation regimes and emissions trading schemes proposed at COP 15 in Copenhagen during December.
