The ability to process complex precious metal sulfide concentrates containing antimony and arsenic in an economic and environmentally safe manner is an important problem facing the mining industry in the United States. Preliminary experiments have been performed to evaluate the possibility of treating a complex sulfide concentrate to recover antimony and precious metals while fixing the arsenic and sulfur as calcium arsenate and calcium sulfate. The process involves: • the oxidation of the antimony and arsenic minerals in the presence of soda ash (to collect the sulfur dioxide and to keep the antimony and arsenic from forming volatile compounds), •the selective leaching of the arsenic from the roast calcine with a heated caustic solution, •the precipitation of the arsenic and sulfate with calcium hydroxide and/or calcium chloride, •the reduction of the residual antimony (collecting the precious metals), •fuming of the metal to form a marketable antimony oxide, and •crucible reduction of the residue to obtain a gold and silver dore. Batch experiments, using synthetic concentrates of stibnite and arsenopyrite, were performed to evaluate the first stage of this process. Variables studied included mixture weight fractions, temperature, gas flow rate, oxygen partial pressure, and time. All of the off gas dust and sulfur containing gases were collected and analyzed. The roast solid residues were subjected to arsenic leach tests, and the leach solutions were subjected to arsenic and sulfate precipitation tests. Introduction The ability to treat a precious metal ore containing appreciable amounts of antimony and arsenic is dependent upon the characteristics of the ore. For some ores, selective flotation can be used to separate the antimony and arsenic minerals, which are then treated separately. Unfortunately, many ores are not treatable in this way, and the concentrates obtained may contain appreciable contamination (which limits the ability to make acceptable grade antimony products). If we consider the added value of the precious metals in the concentrate, then it is worthwhile to evaluate the potential for new methods to treat these types of concentrates. In addition, the environmental difficulties associated with arsenic disposal must be taken into account in any proposed process. If there is appreciable arsenic present, then it must be either recovered as a marketable product or placed in an insoluble form. The problem addressed in this research program has become increasingly important as the precious metals mining industry is encountering more ores of this type. A large deposit of this type exists in Idaho where the antimony occurs primarily as stibnite, with minor amounts of kermesite and tetrahedrite (Cooper, 1951). The gold appears in association with arsenopyrite with minor amounts of other arsenic minerals. Flotation has been used to obtain an antimony concentrate. The concentrate, however, is contaminated with appreciable amounts of arsenic and also contains precious metals. If the ore or concentrate contains appreciable amounts of base metals, then the recovery process becomes much more difficult. There are a number of other known deposits of this type in Alaska, Canada, Montana and elsewhere. The objective of this research program was to develop a fundamental understanding of the oxidation and leaching chemistry of the arsenic and antimony minerals so that technology may be developed to treat these ores in an economic and environmentally safe manner. Wendt (1949) and Koster and Royer (1940) discussed the possibilities of oxidative roasting of stibnite concentrates containing arsenic. Wendt describes a process used at a smelter in Czechoslovakia (in the 1930s) where roasting was carried out in rotary furnaces at 723° K (500° C). Most of the arsenic was removed as fume, as well as 25% of the antimony. No sulfur dioxide containment was described. The oxide fume from the furnace went to a heated caustic water leach, where the arsenic was preferentially dissolved and then precipitated with calcium chloride as calcium arsenate following solid-liquid separation. The antimony oxide was sold, and the solid oxide discharge from the rotary furnace was sent to a blast furnace where the antimony metal, containing the precious metals, was recovered. Computer systems, installed in mineral processing, are designed to accumulate massive amounts of real-time data. Frequently these data are only partially processed because of the lack of adequate methods and the limited accuracy of mineral processing sensors. Methods are proposed to estimate missing data and reconciliate sensor data on a real-time basis. They are based on dynamic extension of steady-state techniques such as the node imbalance minimization or the least-squares mass balance adjustment techniques. The methods are illustrated for simulated and actual flotation data. Their data upgrading ability could be used to improve process monitoring, control and optimization.

Open pit optimization and mine design depend upon a realistic estimate of the grade-tonnage dis¬tribution. The estimate should reflect what can be reasonably recovered and processed. The McCoy/Cove operation in central Nevada is a gold and silver mine. Recoverable reserve estimations of gold and silver were made using indicator kriging and the indirect log normal variance correction to construct the grade- tonnage distribution. Optimal pits were generated using this distribution, and the results were compared to the pits generated by ordinary kriging and indicator kriging block mean methods. The results indicate that the proposed method for multimetal recoverable reserve estimation shows an improvement in terms of predicting the recoverable tons and grades. The optimal pits generated from the recoverable resource model are larger than those generated by the ordinary kriging and indicator kriging block mean methods. This model maximizes the overall recovery of the mineral resource.

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark-Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched. "NIOSH research has shown that heat/humidity buildup is a major concern within coal mine refuge alternatives (RAs). These high temperature and humidity levels inside an RA may expose occupants to heat stress. Due to the safety risks associated with testing using human subjects, NIOSH partnered with ThermoAnalytics to create detailed thermal simulation models of RAs with human occupants. The objective of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature response and moisture loss in environments that may be encountered in a coal mine RA. These parameters were studied across a range of temperatures and relative humidity values to determine if the current 95°F apparent temperature limit for RAs is reasonable. The results indicated that the 95°F apparent temperature limit is protective, provided that miners are supplied with sufficient water. The results also indicated that the body core temperature did not reach dangerous levels even at an apparent temperature of 130°F. However, the results show that moisture loss increases with apparent temperature. Therefore, if the apparent temperature limit were increased, the water provided in an RA would have to be increased to offset moisture loss. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this effort was to predict a miner’s core temperature and moisture loss (sweating and respiration) in environments that are likely to be encountered in a coal mine refuge alternative (RA). A range of temperatures and relative humidity were studied to determine whether the current 95°F Steadman apparent temperature (AT) limit and 2.25 quart/day water requirements for RAs as mandated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) are reasonable [1, 2]. The effects of metabolic heat rate (activity level), miner size (height and weight), and pose (sitting or lying) on core temperature and moisture loss were also studied. MODEL DESCRIPTION TAITherm thermal modeling software (ThermoAnalytics, Inc.) was used to simulate humans in RA-like environments within a range of temperature and relative humidity combinations. The TAITherm Human Thermal Model (HTM) predicts the dynamic thermal response of the simulated miners while accounting for clothing, human tissue thermal properties, and active thermoregulation. The following sections describe the HTM in more detail, the thermal model setup for this analysis, and core temperature and moisture loss metrics found in published literature. Human Thermal Model Overview The TAITherm human thermal model was used to simulate the heat generated by the shelter occupants, and to predict the miners’ skin and core temperatures along with their sweat evaporation rates. The thermoregulation model simulates the process by which the body attempts to maintain a constant core temperature by considering the effects of shivering, sweating, and changes in skin blood flow. This model calculates surface and deep tissue temperatures within the human body as described by a surface mesh."

The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

"One of the most significant technical and practical challenges facing the tunnel construction team on the Legacy Way road tunnel project in Brisbane, Australia was how to erect the pre-stressed precast concrete slabs to form the smoke duct in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnels. An essential part of the tunnel ventilation system, the smoke duct, extends the full length of the 4.6km long twin, two lane tunnels. The vast majority of the tunnels (approx. 4.3km) were constructed using two 12.4m diameter double shield TBMs. The refurbished Herrenknecht machines broke several world records on the way to completing the tunnel excavation works in just over nine months. With the excavation complete the focus turned to solving the complex civil tunnel fit out challenges. A key component of the civil fit out of the tunnels was constructing the smoke duct in the TBM tunnels which was designed as a precast solution. The slabs which each measure 8.62m long by 2.0m wide by 200mm thick and weigh close to 9 tonne need to be erected above cast in situ corbels whilst other tunnel finishing works continue. The space proofing clearance offered by the design to the support corbels below and the precast segmental lining above was in the order of only 100mm. This paper details the events of how the Transcity JV tunnel fit out team, comprising some of Europe and Australia’s leading tunnel construction specialists, drew upon the global strengths of the existing JV member companies and the global reach of leading TBM manufacturer Herrenknecht to develop an innovative system to solve this challenging problem. This globetrotting story, which starts in Australia, visits Europe and mainland China before returning to Brisbane where it all began."

The successful integration of overburden casting techniques into the mine production cycle can be an extremely cost effective use of explosives. The entire mining cycle revolves around the cast blasting and to be successful requires a great deal of planning and cooperation. Several operations of Cyprus Coal Company in the Appalachian coal fields have successfully integrated blast casting into their mine plan. This paper will detail the parameters and necessary controls to integrate an overburden casting program into a surface coal operation.

Although the health effects of airborne dust in underground coal mines are well recognized, a lack of understanding remains about the fundamental mechanisms of dust generation, transportation, deposition and dust-lung reaction. This study was intended to contribute to the understanding of dust transportation and deposition mechanisms in underground mine airways. Data from in-mine experiments carried out under controlled conditions in a straight section of a longwall panel with three different airflow velocities and two different types of coal dust (bituminous and semi-anthracite) were used to determine the turbulent deposition rate of dust particles. Measurements of ambient dust concentrations and deposition along the mine airway were obtained and the total dust deposition velocity (rate) was calculated. The deposition velocity of turbulent diffusion was estimated based on the experimental data and theoretical equations. The effects of airflow velocity, particle size, particle density and distance from the dust source on gravitational, turbulent and total dust deposition are discussed along with related conclusions.

Various attempts have been made to build leadership and management expertise with little success. There are numerous reasons these attempts have failed. Three reasons, along with suggested solutions, will be explored: 1) lack of ownership of the development process by those affected; 2) lack of congruence of the development process used and the business strategies of the organization; and 3) a comprehensive development process. We will discuss a development model applied inside a smelter and refining complex over one year involving all levels of management. The process was credited with helping to substantially reduce cost and enable breakthroughs in production, quality and safety results.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.

The recycling of metal resources in mining influenced water (MIW) requires a paradigm shift from within the mine water treatment industry. The potential to recover zinc for beneficial use in the micronutrient fertilizer industry was investigated through a survey of zinc micronutrient fertilizer representatives. An application of the findings to a case study of the Argo Tunnel influent MIW was then implemented. It was concluded that the potential to beneficially reuse MIW residuals in fertilizers exists; the current process sequences of treatment will need to be modified if metal recycling is to be prioritized.

The term "rare earths" is used to designate a group of elements, Numbers 57-71 which are closely related chemically. They were called "earths" because their oxides resemble those of the alkaline earths, and the designation "rare" was originally applied because of their scarcity. Now many of these elements are known to exist in considerable quantities, and the term "Lanthanide" is applied to this group of elements, because of their similarities to lanthanum, the first element in the group. Many authorities insist on including yttrium, element Number 39, because of its extremely close association with the members of the group in nature and because of its similarity in chemical properties. It has been estimated that the combined rare earth group makes up about five-thousandth. of one percent of the Earth's crust, a higher percent than the common elements, lead, tin, zinc, arsenic, mercury, silver and gold. Cerium is by far the most abundant member comprising about half of the total amount. Yttrium, neodymium, and lanthanum are next in order; samarium, gadolinium, praseodymium, dysprosium, erbium, holmium, and ytterbium are increasingly scarce; while the elements lutetium, thulium, terbium, and europium are extremely rare. The rare earths as a group are metals, usually trivalent, forming basic oxides, and insoluble oxalates in dilute mineral acids. Their fluorides are also difficultly soluble; hence the rare earths or lanthanides may be separated, in general, from other elements by adding oxalic or hydrofluoric acid to a dilute mineral acid solution containing them. The most striking fact which characterizes these elements is the remarkable .similarity in both the physical and chemical properties of their compounds. Their main differences are in the solubilities of their salts and the basicity of their oxides, which vary between that of the alkaline earths and that of aluminum.

Flotation is the primary method for copper minerals separation from porphyry ores. The need to process difficult-to-float porphyry copper ores presents challenges to engineers and scientists in several areas. This paper is concerned with summarizing generalized problems faced in the processing of porphyry ores and treatment methods to overcome the specific problems. Though some of the problems are interrelated the problems have been classified into three broad catagories. The case studies of some of the successful applications of innovative methods to solve problems related to ore mineralogy, metallurgical aspects of ore treatment and process variables show that quite often the problems are solvable by a judicious choice of flotation variables.

INTRODUCTION he most important information required for the engineering design of structures in rock is its inherent rock properties. Without providing adequate parameters on the rock property, high quality of the engineering design cannot be expected. Many laboratory rock testing methods have been developed, but they are mostly for testing intact homogeneous rock without appreciable discontinuities. In reality, the intact rock properties do not represent the behavior of rock masses because rock masses include irregularities such as joints, cracks, interlayers, variations in mineral compositjon, etc. In general the type and intensity of the rock defects may be much more important than the type of rock which will be encountered (Terzaghi, 1977; Bieniawski, 1984). In-situ rock testing can provide better information on rock parameters, but it takes a tremendous amount of effort, time and cost. In recent years, numerical modeling techniques are gaining popularity as a design tool for structures in rock bodies due to the enormous progress in computer technology (Wang, 1985; Kripakov and Melvin, 1983; Park and Ash, 1985), but it is quite dangerous to use numerical techniques without having proper input data. Bieniawski (1984) states as follows: Some design methods such as numerical techniques have outpaced our ability to provide the input data necessary for the application of these methods. In order to provide an adequate amount of input data, an extensive testing program may be required, thus major efforts in time and expenses are commonly spent, In this paper, a new rock testing method, which utilizes the principles of laser holographic interferometry, is introduced. This method requires only a few minutes to measure the modulus of elasticity and quality of a rock core sample, which does not have to be cut or ground. The Poisson's ratio can also be measured in a few minutes from a sliced rock specimen. HOLOGRAPHIC INTERFEROMETRY Principles of Holographic Interferometry In 1948, Gabor invented holography, which is the technique of reviving three dimensional images using a monochromatic light source. A full demonstration was not made then because a clean monochromatic light source was not available. Later, in the early 19601s, the laser was adopted as a monochromatic and coherent light source (Leith and Upatnieks, 1963). Since then, applications have been made in many different fields ranging from crime prevention to three dimensional television. In this technique, an image is usually recorded by means of constructing a hologram which is a record of the interference pattern formed on a high resolution photographic system as shown in Figure I. A beam splitter divides the laser beam into two beams: (1) an object beam which is expanded while passing through a beam expander and illuminates the object, and (2) a reference beam which is expanded and illuminates the holographic plate. Subsequent to an exposure, the holographic plate is developed and illuminated by the expanded reference beam. The original scene of the object is revived in a three-dimensional image. The entire instrument should be placed on a vibration free environment. The wave fields reflected by the object in two slightly different configurations can be superimposed to form an interference fringe pattern. Thus, it is possible to measure the displacement that took place between the two configurations. This method is called holographic interferometrv. There are two methods of achieving this phenomena. The first is the double exposure method, wherein two exposures of the object are made prior to developing the film. The general term "coal mine burp" refers to the sudden and violent failure of in situ coal. Coal bumps occur in most countries where coal is worked by underground methods, and are related to both geological factors and mining tech¬niques. Although no single set of circumstances is solely responsible for causing coal bumps, it is generally agreed that at least one of five conditions is necessary in order for then to occur: 1,2,3,4 (1) the depth of cover exceeds 500-ft., (2) the overlying strata are relatively strong and stiff, (3) the coal is structurally strong, (4) the floor does not heave readily, and (5) the mining method produces high stresses over a large area of the seam. Except for the last, these conditions relate to geological factors that are impractical to control. Consequently, methods of controlling or minimizing the occurrence of coal bumps usually are concerned with mining techniques. Coal bumps have been successfully controlled by both longwall and 'yielding pillar' mining systems 4. The longwall system is particularly effective in controlling bumps, but does not eliminate them completely, especially in strong coal seams being worked at comparatively great depths, say in excess of 2000-ft.5. Under such conditions, auger drilling or water infusion often prove helpful 5,6. These techniques are used to destress or otherwise alter the mechanical properties of the coal in an attempt to shift the peak "abutment pressure" away from the immediate vicinity of the face. Under 'normal' conditions, however, it can be expected that the coal near the face will be crushed under the prevailing high stress conditions and that the peak abutment pressure will automatically be shifted into the solid coal. In this context, coal mine bumps can be characterized as unstable releases of energy associated with successive yielding of portions of the coal seam with progressive mining. Longwall and yielding pillar mining systems are effective in controlling coal bumps because they ordinarily do not allow the zone of peak abutment pressure to become 'surrounded' by destressed coal.

Will Rogers unwittingly commented on the essence of evaluations when he said: "We don't know what they don't know!" In so doing, he explained why managers have an obligation to verify that their personnel really know what is expected of them. Rogers further stated that "What we know may not be so!" Here, he suggests that managers must establish the correctness of facts on which they make decisions concerning the future of their organizations. Yet, there are some managers who may not have considered this basic wisdom. These are perhaps the ones who shun a solid, fact-finding evaluation. Instead, they trust to guesswork as a basis for attempting improvement. Without realizing it, they may be making incorrect decisions harmful to the very organization they are trying to improve. Unfortunately, an attitude of avoiding evaluations often permeates whole organizations when their managers fail to appreciate their importance. Recently, the following was found prominently displayed in the office of a maintenance manager. Regrettably, the facts of a subsequent evaluation established how imprudent his attitude was:
