A cost analysis for two alternative contour mining methods is performed to compare their results. The methods evaluated are: 1) Front-End Loader/Truck Haulback and 2) Scraper Haulback. Before performing these analyses, output requirements and equipment needs are found based on integrating geometric limitations with material properties. The final geometric design establishes limits on clearances, congestion problems and grades (with associated running surface materials). All calculations are kept practical, with assumptions clearly stated. The cost analysis is a unique, easily utilized compilation of several different approaches incorporating cost engineering principles. The strengths of each are welded into a cohesive entity once again aimed at practical application. The results are presented in tabular form.

The Arrowhead Tunnels in southern California are being completed by MWD under stringent groundwater in?ow limits established by the U.S. Forest Service. Pre-excavation grouting, new TBMs and a bolted, gasketed, pre-cast concrete segment initial lining are employed to control water in?ows. The effectiveness of prescribed water control measures was analyzed using conservative assumptions with the analytical techniques described by Goodman (1964), Heuer (1995), and numerical modeling. Analyses results suggest groundwater in?ows to the tunnels can be maintained well below the limits with aggressive pre-excavation grouting balanced against a reasonable rate of advance and quality erection of the initial lining system.

Few factors are as important as fluctuations in aggregate economic activity and exchange rates in determining the profitability of mineral investments. Macroeconamic theory explains how the two factors are interconnected in today's world and in tomorrow's. We can use macro¬economic theory to lessen some of the risks in mineral investments. And in the current state of the world the risks are high. The above paragraph summarizes our argument. Our goal in this paper is to examine the nature of contemporary business cycles so as to explain their implications for the metal industries, particularly the implications for capacity. Thus, our first section examines the workings, causes, and history of the recent economic fluc¬tuations. In doing so we must understand how current world economy is interconnected, that is, how economic events in one country are trans¬mitted to the rest of the world. Our view is that governments and central banks are key actors in the creating of economic fluctuations. Then, in section two, we work out the implications of section one for the metal industries focussing on comparative advantage, trade, and capacity decisions. Over the last fifteen years the world economic system has had slow overall economic growth and has had strangely unpleasant recessions. While future business cycle will not repeat the de¬tailed pattern we have seen, there will be similarities. The similarities need to be under¬stood before investment occurs. The slow growth in the world economy since the early 1970s has aggravated the problems from business cycles, created its own problems, and has partially hidden the effects of other events. Major realignments of currencies are likely to take place over a business cycle. The nature of the causes of the cycle will determine the direc¬tion of change in the exchange rates. For example, whether a USA recession will be accompanied by a weaker or a stronger dollar will be determined by the cause of the recession. The realignment of currencies over a business cycle leads to a realignment of comparative advantage in the metal industries. Thus, not only will world metal consumption vary over the business cycle but the impact on various countries' metals industries will differ consi¬derably. Competitiveness often depends more on the value of the dollar than it does on inherent efficiency and wage rates. Capacity decisions are inherently riskier due to the country specific nature of exchange rate risk. A realignment of currencies changes the pattern of trade if and only if the country with the cheaper currency also has idle capacity. The importance of our topic is indicated by Table 1 which shows the impact of cyclical and exchange rate shocks on the USA metal industry. "INTRODUCTION Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting both appropriate systems and the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation. Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights on the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement over the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is not often available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available it requires a major time and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support. Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This paper focuses on the optimization of the cable bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Careful consideration is given to the type of cleaning equipment and control sys- teas to be used when selecting circuits for wash-ing fine coal (28M x 0 size fraction). However, the desliming, declaying and sizing procedures required to ensure efficient operation normally are not evaluated in sufficient detail resulting in disappointing system performance. This paper details desliming and dewatering circuit design which is extremely effective based on recent test data. The circuit maintains control of the 28M x 0 (declayed) size fraction with minimal misplaced material and maximized circuit efficiency. A discussion of circuit design parameters and control systems, as well as results from the testing program, are included in this text.

Uranium is an element incompatible with respect to the major rock-forming minerals crystallizing from granitic magma, entering in- stead trace minerals such as zircon. The relationship between the saturation limit (SL) for such a mineral and the bulk distribution coefficient (Do) for U is central to understanding the distribution of U and its availability to late- stage fluids which can form ore deposits directly, or labile U which can be remobilized later. Low SL values imply early crystallization of zircon, but in very small proportions, minimizing Do and maximizing the degree of enrichment of U in late-stage fluids. Thus, granitic rocks with low Zr contents (due to a low saturation limit for zircon) are most likely to evolve U- enriched differentiates; this will be reflected in a high U content of the zircons (but not necessarily high U abundances in whole-rocks). Thus, the ratio of the U content of zircon to the Zr content of the corresponding whole-rock is potentially a very useful parameter in identifying granitic rocks which are most likely to have U-enriched solutions associated with them. The granitic rocks associated with the U deposits of the Midnite Mine area, Washington, have geochemical characteristics which fit very well the model presented here. The rocks are very low in Zr (100 ppm) and contain zircons with extremely high U contents (3,000-4,000 ppm).

At the Freeport Indonesia Grasberg Mine in Irian Jaya, Indonesia, a system of underground drainholes and surface drain wells have been designed and are currently under construction. The underground drainholes are located at elevations of approximately 9,600 feet and the surface drainwells located at elevations ranging between 12,500 and 13,000 feet. Together they will be used to drain the ground water contained within relatively incompetent rock. This drain system will allow for the successful dry mining of the open pit, and provide slope stability of the pit wall. The surface drain well network, when completed will allow for the draining of ground water to the Amole Drift where the underground drainholes are constructed.

"Lithium is a soft, silver-white alkali metal with atomic number 3. As of 2015, the end use of lithium was estimated to be as follows: lithium-ion batteries (35 percent), ceramics and glass (32 percent), lubricating greases (9 percent), air treatment (5 percent), continuous casting mould flux powders (5 percent), polymer production (4 percent), primary aluminum production (1 percent) and other uses (9 percent) (Jaskula, 2014). Lithium is found in brine lake deposits containing lithium chloride and in hard rock pegmatite deposits. It can be sold in a range of product types; as mineral concentrate, brine, compound (lithium carbonate or lithium hydroxide) and metal depending on its intended end use (Goonan, 2012; Jaskula 2014).In the 1990s, the United States and Chile were the largest producers of lithium globally, primarily from brine operations (Ober, 1994). Most of the lithium compounds produced during this period were consumed in the glass, ceramics and aluminum industries. In the 1980s and 1990s, there were two major lithium operations in the United States: brine operations at Silver Peak, NV and a spodumene mine and lithium carbonate/lithium hydroxide plant in Kings Mountain, NC. The Kings Mountain operations ceased production in 1991 and were eventually dismantled in 1994. Brine operations were also active in Argentina and Chile, while the largest lithium ore deposit in the world was operated at Greenbushes, Western Australia. During this period, it was predicted that major shifts in demand for lithium would come from the success and widespread use of electric vehicles (Ober, 1994).Lithium is still produced from the brine operations at Silver Peak. But in more recent years, Chile has become the world’s leading producer of lithium carbonate from brines. Australia has maintained its position as the world’s largest producer of lithium mineral concentrate, the majority of which is exported to China to produce lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide (Jaskula, 2014).A spodumene concentrate was also produced at the Tanco Mine in Manitoba, Canada beginning in the 1980s through to 2010 when lithium operations were suspended due to fluctuations in the lithium market price (Martins et al., 2013)."

In the early operations of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Company, which extended from 1914 to 1926, the ore as mined contained principally sulphide copper minerals, manly chalcocite (Cu2S), This ore was milled in a 20,000-ton concentrator and the copper was recovered as a flotation concentrate which, was smelted at the nearby plant of the I ternational Smelting and Refining Company. In those days no attempt was made torecovercopper from any oxide minerals present. As mining operations progressed it soon became evident that the proportion of oxide minerals present would steadily increase, and. it was realized that some method of treatment would have to be developed whereby copper could' be recovered from both oxide and. sulphide minerals contained in the ore. A research program was instituted and after some years of experimental and, pilot plant work a new hydro-metallurgical process was developed whereby it became possible to extract copper from both the oxide and. sulphide minerals in a single leaching operation. The solvent adopted consisted of a mixture of sulphuric acid and ferric sulphate,' Following dissolution, the dissolved copper would be recovered by electrolysis. Also in the process of electrolyzing, spent solutions of sulphuric acid, H2SO4, and. ferric sulphate, Fe2(SOk)3, would be regeneratede and. somade available for continuous reuse. The process appeared to be a success and the decision was made to build a full-sized leaching plant for the future treatment of I spiration mixed ore. Construction was started and the leaching plant was completed in 1926, With the start of ferric-sulphate leaching the Inspiration Concentrator was shut down and, with the exception of a few short time runs has not operated since that time. The ferric sulphate leaching process served. Inspiration well for some 30 years and during that time won a name for itself as a classic example of hydro-metallurgical treatment of mixed sulphide oxide ores. Originally the plant was designed. to process some 7,500 tons per day of a mixed ore containing about 1,2% copper, of which 60% was present as oxide and. 40% as sulphide, Down through the years various improvements were made for the purpose of increasing plant capacity and as well to change the limiting 'factor of sulphide-oxide ratio, The final result was a leaching capacity of 9,600 tons per day when treating a 1% copper ore with a reversal of the sulphide-oxide ratio to 60% sulphide and 40% oxide.

Following the last Cholera Epidemic in 1872, resulting in approximately 400 deaths, the City Council of Munich decided to re¬place the former water supply system within the city limits by tapping new water supply areas outside of the city. Since 1883 Munich has been obtaining its water from the Mangfall River catchment located some 35 km to the south. Its most distinguishing characte¬ristics are as follows: 1) the water is free-flowing, i.e., a pumping system is not required as the catchment area is 100 m higher than the city; 2) the water does not normally have to be treated, meaning "spring fresh" tap water. On a daily basis, 300,000 m3 of water flow through the more than 100 year old pipes, accounting for 70% of the city's daily need. There was originally no requirement of a water tight system as strategically installed drain pipes prevented the build-up of exter¬nal water pressure on the lining. As the qua¬lity of today's water has become significant¬ly worse, the tunnels are now in dire need of restoration or replacement.

Orebodies with intricate three-dimensional shapes (such as porphyry molybdenum deposits) are difficult to model using geostatistics or other computer-assisted methods. The strong trends in their spatial grade distributions occur as mathematically complex shapes and prevent the customary assumption of local stationarity that is required for accurate ore reserve estimation. "Zoned Kriging", a new method developed by AMAX, solves this problem directly by using the geologist's interpretation of the ore zones as a parameter in the kriging equations. The geological basis and methods used in the Climax ore zoning technique are reviewed and discussed relative to their application in zoned geostatistical modeling. The Zoned Kriging technique is described and demonstrated using data typical of mineral deposits.

In this study, numerical simulations of yield pillars employing the finite element method with time-dependent Drucker-Prager material model are conducted. The stress control mechanism of yield pillars on weak floor strata is studied. The development of pillar yield zone, the distribution of pillar stress and the development of failure zone in the weak floor strata are investigated. The study indicates that a properly selected yield pillar size may significantly reduce the peak stress induced in the weak floor strata and effectively control the development of failure zone in the floor.

This article revisits global projections made in 1981of eight metallic and fertilizer minerals for the year 2000. The objectives here are to quantify the differences between the projected and observed levels of consumption for the year 2000 for eight of the 26 nonfuel minerals covered in the earlier study. An attempt is then made to attribute these (often) large differences to the major determinants of minerals demand — income, technological, regulatory and other policy changes, and changes in the recycling rates of the metallic minerals. The eight minerals covered are aluminum, copper, iron, mercury, nickel, phosphate rock, potash and tin. This summary article presents the actual population, gross domestic product (GDP) and per capita GDP changes from 1970 to 2000, compared with the projected rates for these important determinants of mineral use, along with the observed growth rates of minerals consumption for the eight nonfuel minerals included in this study. When the projections are compared with the observed global consumption levels for the year 2000, the differences range from +43 percent for nickel to +229 percent for potash.

Magnesium is the eighth most abundant element in the earth's crust and the third most plentiful element in seawater. It is found in more than sixty minerals and in brines and seawater as a magnesium salt. One of the more important magnesium minerals is magnesium carbonate, MgCO3, with a theoretical maximum magnesia, MgO, content of 47.6%; this carbonate form represents the world's largest source of magnesia. The next most used sources for magnesia are magnesia-rich brines and seawater, where it occurs as magnesium sulfate and magnesium chloride. Other commercially important magnesium-bearing minerals are dolomite, CaMg(CO3)2, which serves the aggregate industry as well as the chemical industry; brucite, Mg(OH)2, which is used in the production of both caustic and sintered magnesia; olivine, ([MgFe]2-SiO2), which serves the refractory and heat storage industries; talc, (H2Mg3(SiO3)4), which serves several industries as a filler and as an ingredient in cosmetics; and serpentine, (H4Mg3SiO9). All these minerals are of commercial value because of the desirable characteristics given to them by magnesia and by its placement in the crystal structure. These minerals are the starting raw materials for a wide range of products. These include the production of magnesium metal, and several grades of magnesia used for the production of both sintered magnesia for refractory manufacture and lighter fired caustic magnesia, the latter is used in fluxes, fillers, insulation, cements, decolorants, fertilizers, chemicals, in the treatment of waste water including pH control, and in the removal of sulfur compounds from exhaust stacks. Magnesite is one of several major minerals possessing a dual character, i.e., non-metallic industrial mineral because of its principal end use as a calcined/dead burned raw material in non-metallic end products and magnesium metal. A large percentage of the magnesia used to produce magnesium metal comes from seawater1 brines. The total primary metal production worldwide is about 350 ktpy. This report reviews magnesite solely as an industrial non- metallic raw material. Magnesite for most refractory purposes must have a content of sintered magnesia above 85%, with a preference for those sources that have the potential for 90 to 98% magnesia values. Dolomite, used in large tonnages because of its physical properties in the construction industry, also has a use in the chemical and the refractory industry. In its calcined form, dolomite is used as a slag addition in the making of steel, and it is used in a high-purity calcine to precipitate magnesium hydroxide from brines or seawater. The precipitated magnesium hydroxide is intermediate for the production of deadburned clinker for refractories and the production of magnesium metal. In many cases the high-purity magnesium hydroxide obtained by precipitation with calcined dolomite, or in some cases limestone, has supplanted much of the world's production of magnesia from the natural mineral magnesite. This is especially true of the United States and in major industrialized areas of Europe and Japan. The best known of the minerals directly and widely exploited for its magnesia content is magnesite (MgCO3), one of the calcite group of rhombohedra1 carbonates, which includes calcite (CaCO3), siderite (Fe2CO3), and rhodocrosite (MnCO3), among others. The members of this group enter into a wide range of substitutional solid solutions when the positive ions have similar radii. The radii of magnesium and iron ions are within 6% of each other; hence magnesite and siderite form a complete series, of which the mineral breunnerite (ferroan magnesite) is a well known end member. The radii of calcium ion is 36% larger than that of magnesium ion and only limited substitution exists at each end of the MgC03-CaCO3 series. Dolomite is not a member of the calcite group, but it occurs when calcium and magnesium ions alternate in equal number in an ordered structure among carbonate ions. The result of this relationship is that calcite and dolomite are commonly found intermixed with magnesite. They occur, commonly, as identifiable crystal entities, which can be separated to a varying degree from the magnesite by benefication techniques. Magnesite, when pure, contains 47.8% MgO and 52.2% CO,. The pure mineral is found occasionally as transparent crystals resembling calcite. Magnesite principally contains variable amounts of the carbonates, oxides, and the silicates of iron, calcium, manganese, and aluminum. Although the genesis of natural magnesite deposits can be complex, it is distinguished in nature in two distinct physical forms, namely crystalline, (with a wide range of visible crystal sizes) and cryptocrystalline, sometimes referred to as amorphous, where the crystal size is not detectable to the eye and will range from 1 to 10 pm. The two types not only differ in crystal structure but in the sizes of the deposits and in modes of formations. The crystalline form has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.0. The color range is from white to black with shades of yellow, blue, red, or gray. The color is not a significant indicator of purity but in a given deposit an experienced person can often roughly grade the magnesite by observing color and crystallinity. Macrocrystalline deposits occur in relatively few, but generally large, deposits on the order of several million tons. The ore shows a marble-like crystal structure and belongs to the sedimentary or metasomatic groups of origin. The cryptocrystalline variety of magnesite frequently occurs in many small deposits, although there are exceptions. Cryptocrystalline magnesite is typically massive with no cleavage and is sometimes descriptively called bone magnesite. The fracture is usually conchoidal, with a hardness of 3.5 to 5.0. The color is mainly white, but it can have tints of yellow, orange, or buff. Accessory silaceous minerals such as serpentine, quartz, or chalcedony are usually present. Calcium minerals are normally absent or in low concentration, this contrasting with the macrocrystalline form where calcium minerals are almost invariably present and some- times in high concentration. The paper deals with the activity program and the preliminary results of a research work commissioned by IReR Research Centre and Regione Lombardia to the Department of Land, Environment and Geotechnologies of Politecnico di Torino. The aim is to define measurement, analysis and control criteria for the emission of chemical and physical pollutants from non-metal mining industries, with particular reference to noise and airborne particulates. Such emissions are related to health risks and annoyance problems, both for the working crews and the neighbouring population, and so, in order to get an effective sustainability of the industry, suitable reduction methods and assessment tools are required. A simple technique for the evaluation and forecasting of both the emission levels and deriving impact has been tested at different mining and quarrying sites, considering their differences in terms of layout and exploitation method, the latter ascribed to a series of main typologies as present in Lombardia region.

"The Netherlands has major resources of sand, gravel and clay, exploited mainly for construction works and the building materials industry. As in most western countries, mineral extraction meets with considerable societal resistance. To this end, Dutch minerals policy aims to prevent extraction by promoting economical use of materials, and the use of alternative (secondary or renewable) materials. Up till recently, it also included a system of production planning to sustain supplies of regionally scarce materials. Dutch policy development is reviewed and discussed in terms of pitfalls and possibilities for mineral planning in general. Promoting secondary substitution has been quite successful, and presents an example. In contrast, the production planning system has been controversial from the start and ineffective as a result, mainly because it attempted to solve supply problems without properly addressing the underlying resistance. Regression analysis of calculated on measured displacements were used to assess the influence of fill and fold plunge on shaft pillar mining at the Homestake Mine. These effects were neglected in the original three-dimensional finite element analysis undertaken in 1991. An average fold plunge of 15? and a 24K fill (Young’ modulus of 24,000 psi or 165 Mpa) were used in the reanalysis. Measured displacements were obtained from an array of 36 m (120 ft) multiple-position borehole extensometers installed in June 1994 and read to March 2003. Results indicate the effects of both on calculated displacements and thus on regression parameters are noticeable. However, these neglected effects would not have changed the original inference of Ross Shaft stability during pillar mining.

For several recent TBM tunnel projects, unexpected ground conditions have been encountered, causing extra cost, considerable delay, and in some cases major claims. Undoubtedly, insufficient and/or irrelevant site investigation and testing are among the main causes of such incidents. The purpose of this paper is to review the main investigations and tests relevant for hard rock TBM projects, with particular emphasis on the considerable development that has taken place over the last few years. Also, guidelines for defining optimum scope and extent of site investigations and testing are discussed, as well as the importance of adjusting the investigations and tests according to complexity of the ground conditions and project type.

"We hear all the time about the value of hard work and perseverance, and the part they play in the professional life of successful people. What we do not hear so much about are the many professionals who work hard and persevere, yet never seem to quite reach the level of success they aim for. Some current authors are beginning to give more attention to the part luck/black swans/outliers play in success. This is not a new phenomenon, Machiavelli had a lot to say about it back in the Renaissance. So how can knowledge of this dynamic help in a modern organization? INTRODUCTION Work hard and you will succeed. Go to the right school, major in the right degree, study hard, and get a good job. Look at the lives of successful people, and do what they do. Be all that you can be. You can be anything you want to be. Really? Those who are successful always get attention, people want to know what they did to reach such a high position. Invariably, at least part of their narrative will include hard work, wise insight, taking advantage of opportunities, etc. If they are of a more generous nature, they might also allow that building the right friendships and collaborations also played a role. All of this may be true; what we do not often hear are the stories of those who did all of these very same things, but did not find success. An example from pop culture: The Voice. I have watched this show occasionally the past couple of years. One of the things I like about the show is that the initial screening of contestants is based solely on their singing voice (hence the name of the show), and not on their appearance. At the time of this writing (early November), the judges have just finished elimination rounds for their final teams to go on to the live shows. Here is my point—in almost every case the judges agonized over choosing who would go forward and who would be eliminated. And the reason is because all of them are really talented singers. It is impressive how gifted they are. At the end of each season, only one is declared a winner, out of that gifted pool of singers. When you hear their stories, they are all talented, hard-working individuals sacrificing for their art. And as far as I know, none of them has ever become a star. Hard work, dedication, sacrifice, talent—sometimes it is enough, sometimes not. I will be looking at the part uncertainty/luck/black swans play in our lives, but I want to make it clear at the beginning that I am not saying everything that happens to us is out of our hands or beyond our control. Taleb makes this same point (2007, p. 52): “This problem is chronic: if you tell people that the key to success is not always skills, they think that you are telling them that it is never skills, always luck.”"

Canada encompasses an area of approximately 9,976,000 kilometres. It is comparable in size to the United States, but because of climatic conditions and limited transportation facilities, much of the area is unsuitable for agricultural or industrial development. We have a population of 22,000,000 - most of whom reside within a hundred mile belt paralleling the Canadian-U.S. border. Our principal cities in order of size are Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and Winnipeg. We have a total of 10 provinces, each of which elects its own - government. The Yukon Territory and Northwest Territories covering the northern half of the country, are administered by federal government agencies. The mining industry employs approximately 9% of the labour force and accounts for more than 40% of all tonnage shipped on Canadian railroads and inland waterways. In 1974 it produced $4,800 million in mineral wealth. Canada ranks first in world production of asbestos, nickel, zinc, and silver and has significant production of copper, iron, molybdenum, lead and other mineral commodities. During the past decade Canada, like many other western countries, has undergone dramatic economic and social change. This trend is continuing, and its effect on the Canadian mining industry has produced conflicting results. From the industry's point of view, some of the more negative aspects include a steadily increasing involvement by government at municipal, provincial and federal levels through the imposition of Stricter controls, regulations and taxation policies, a rising tide of nationalism, which advocates public ownership of all natural resources, the spectre of inflation (currently increasing at the rate of 8% per year) and unsettled labour conditions.
