This work presents a study of characterization of activated carbons for the adsorption of Au(CN)2- complex. A comparative study of six samples of activated carbons, three Brazilian and three produced out of Brazil was made in order to determine their qualification for a performance in adsorption circuits in the extractive metallurgy of gold. The adsorptive capacity and the kinetics of adsorption were compared to the physical and chemical properties of each one. The influence of poluant ions on the kinetics and loading capacity of aurocianyde anion was also determined.

The magnetite orebody at Pea Ridge strikes NE-SH and dips at about 800 to the SE. The ore is high grade magnetite with a strike length of over 600-m and a maximum width of over 180-m on some of the levels. The shape and the mineral content of the iron orebody have been fairly consistent so far. The iron ore and surrounding basement rocks are Precambrian in age. These rocks are usually very competent, about 400-m of sediments lie over the ore.

Over 800 mines have closed in Australia in the past 25 years. This paper summarizes the data obtained from those closures and includes all Australian States and Territories and all commodities, including metalliferous, coal and industrial minerals. Twenty five percent of the mines closed due to resource exhaustion or depletion; 24% due to high costs, price drops, or declining grades; 8% due to open pit resource depletion (but with underground reserves remaining) or underground reserves depleted (but plans to open cut remainder) and 7% due to receivership or voluntary administration. The environmental, social and economic impacts of these closures are also significant and include acid mine drainage and impact on mine employees. An understanding of the causes of premature mine closure will better equip mining companies and governments to better manage future mine closures, wherever in the world the mines are operating.

In this study, a 3D model of the shovel motion based multi-body system dynamics in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems (ADAMS) environment was developed. The kinematics model of the shovel was modeled as a multi-body system, which comprises the lower, upper, and the attachment mechanisms. The Euler-Lagrangian equations were employed as the computational framework to describe the dynamic behavior of the model. A virtual prototype of the shovel was built in the ADAMS software environment. This environment allows the visualization of a 3D motion of the general mechanical system and the prediction of interference of the moving components of the shovel. The numerical analysis and animation of digging, swinging and dumping motions for the shovel were performed. The superimposed display of the deployment for the shovel in three phases allows a detailed examination of the dynamic interference among assembly components. The importance of factoring mining dilution into feasibility stage ore reserve estimates is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. Relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMU's) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

It shortly describes some of the most known classification systems, CMMI and UNFC, and their features, and discusses their advantages and weaknesses. Author also tries to define all the properties, a system should have to be declared as "World Code". Perhaps the ,integration of both systems would best accomplish the task and leave the “interest groups" the freedom to use only those parts of the system, they are interested in.

INTRODUCTION Semiautogenous (SAG) grinding technology first started to be seriously considered for comminution circuit design in the mid-1960s as an alternative to the three-stage crushing circuits and rod-ball mill circuits in vogue at the time. Since this time the application of SAG mill technology has become widespread with over 250 mills larger than 20 feet in diameter sold (Jones 2002). The vast majority of concentrators constructed over the past quarter century have utilized SAG mill technology, and a SAG-based comminution-based circuit is generally the first choice considered for new projects. Since the first generation of SAG milling technology was applied, many lessons have been learned, and new supporting technologies have emerged which make the design, installation and operation of SAG &-based grinding circuits more robust and efficient. This paper will discuss the current status of SAG and associated technologies. MILL MECHANICAL DESIGN ISSUES Table 1 summarizes the manner in which SAG design capability has evolved over the past 30 years. Increases in mill diameter came slowly as the industry took a wait-and-see attitude as the technology of larger mill diameters was advanced. The first 32-foot- diameter mill was ordered in 1969. It was not until 1979 that the technology jumped to the 34-foot-diameter mill and 1988 for the first 36-foot-diameter mill. The first 38- and 40-foot-diameter mills were both ordered in 1996. At least five 38-foot-diameter and two 40-foot-diameter mills will be in operation by mid-2004. Advances in structural analytical techniques and increased computational power, coupled with field measurements of large operating mills, have increased the confidence of the mill suppliers in their designs and the operating companies in the viability of larger diameter mills. The, control of drilling and blasting is a complicated dynamic system whose aim is to ensure safety and prepare rock of required grade and the standard level of broken material reserves Unlike other processes drilling and blasting, as an object have the following features: -a large variety of drilling and blasting methods due to specific conditions of blasting, various types of drilling equipment, schemes-of blasting, types of explosives and others; -relative continuity of drilling, the character of mammoth blasts being discrete; -increased requirements to the safety of blasting;; -a great. number of control parameters, some of them having a qualitative characteristic but not a quantitative one; -availability of feedforward and feedback with other mining processes in terms of time and space. These features predetermine the hierarchical structure of an automated system of planning and control of drilling and blasting (fig.1). The system is implemented on the basis of unity of the data base and in interre lation with other problems of controlling mining operations. An automated system of this kind makes it possible to take optimal decisions actually on all the levels and stages of operations, with rock having been blasted before extraction.

A critical examination of the published results on the hemolytic ability of different forms of silica viz, quartz, cristobalite, tridymite and amorphous silica is made and it is concluded that quartz, cristobalite, and tridymite have nearly equal longterm abilities (within ±15%) but much larger than the hemolytic ability of amorphous silica when correctly compared on a per unit surface area basis. Also, a one-to-one correlation appears to be valid between the hemolysis and fibrosis studies. New results on the photoacoustic spectroscopy of amorphous silica particles heat-treated at 100, 200, 400, 550, 700, 820 and 1050°C are presented and it is observed that the intensity of the sharp silanol band at 3745 cm-1 and hemolysis by these particles have nearly the same temperature dependence. In contrast the intensity of the bulk IR modes (viz. the 797 cm-1 band) does not show any significant temperature dependence. These observations demonstrate that the surface SiOH species are involved in hemolysis by silica particles. Key words: silica polymorphs; hemolysis; silanol species

Lignite is a kind of easy-to-slime and low rank coal. It is hard to be separated by the conventional wet coal beneficiation technologies. Meanwhile, in recent decades, a large amount of fine coal (-6 mm) is generated as the mechanized mining technology has been progressively deployed in coal sector, which causes a great difficult for lignite beneficiation and upgrading due to lack of efficient technology available. In this paper, a vibrated gas-fluidized bed was used to separate the -6 mm fine lignite particles. Separation experiments of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm lignite were carried out in a laboratory-scale vibrated gas-fluidized bed. The effects of several parameters including the superficial air velocity, vibration intensity, bed height and exterior moisture content on the separation performance were experimentally studied. The results show that the optimal separation performance was achieved when the superficial air velocity is 0.3, the vibration intensity is 1.4, the bed height is 50 mm, the exterior moisture content is below 4% (-6+3 mm) and 2% (-3+1 mm). And the probably error E values of -6+3 mm and -3+1 mm size fraction of lignite are 0.202 and 0.225 respectively. The results indicate that a vibrated gas-fluidized bed can provide an effective solution for -6 mm lignite separation.

An integrated approach to mine management is presented. A model for achieving the level of control of operations critical to surviving in the current market is outlined. The integrated Production and Cost Management System (PRaCaST) is designed to provide mine managers with a reliable, quantitative, decision-assisting system that can be used in formulating timely responses to complex fluctuations in operations. PRacaST consists of a productivity forecast model, sectional bills of materials containing current resources consumption factors, a linear programming scheduling model, and operations analyses that focus on production and cost performances. The system is applied to an underground coal mine.

There are many different machine setup parameters and variables that affect the production of cone crushers in a mineral processing plant. One of these variables is the eccentric speed at which the cone gyrates. In June 2012, pilot tests were conducted on a 200 hp high speed cone crusher to determine the production and operating conditions over a wide spectrum of eccentric speed. Every plant will have variations in the ore characteristics and feed rates throughout the life of the mine, and at times throughout a single shift of operation, which result in non-optimal use of the crushing energy and inconsistent process control. For high speed cone crushers, the crusher will exhibit a different capacity, power required, and discharge size distribution as the speed ranges over the design limits of the machine. This study documents the measured variation in production and energy efficiency both when the crusher was ran at full capacity as well as when the feed to the crusher was not sufficient to run at full capacity. Overall, the results match theory and the capacity and power fluctuated by 25% and 17%, respectively, over the speed range when operated full while there was an overall trend of slightly coarser discharge size distribution as the speed decreased. The results with the fixed feed rate were more telling, as the crushers had 4-14% higher production when making a theoretical minus 12.5 mm product when operating at the optimal speed as compared to the worst speed in the ?typical? speed range for this application. Secondary analysis of the fixed tonnage testing also showed that the power draw was more consistent with lower magnitude spikes at the higher speeds (higher cavity level), as on average the standard deviation of the power draw increased from 7% to 18% and the peak power spikes from 20% to 48% over the speed range tested. The findings lay groundwork for more efficient plant design. Varying the speed of the crusher can be used to tune the crusher speed during commissioning, adapt to changing ore conditions over long periods of time, or be used as a dynamic input into an advanced control system. Each action above would serve to make the crusher(s) more productive and more energy efficient, and would also have mechanical benefits for the machine. Estimating the residual metal inventory of large heap leaching operations is desirable for many reasons. Several methods have been tried with limited success. Drilling data from the Valley Leach Facility at AngloGold Ashanti's Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mine has been used to develop a robust inventory estimation technique. The technique is presented along with discussion of the particular inventory components and evaluation methodologies.

"The identification and mitigation of adverse geologic conditions are critical to the safety and productivity of underground coal mining operations. To anticipate and mitigate adverse geologic conditions, a formal method to evaluate geotechnical factors must be established. Each mine is unique and has its own separate approach for defining what an adverse geological condition consists of. The collection of geologic data is a first critical step to creating a geological database to map these hazards efficiently and effectively. Many considerations must be taken into account, such as lithology of immediate roof and floor strata, seam height, gas and oil wells, faults, depressions in the mine floor (water) and increases in floor elevation (gas), overburden, streams and horizontal stress directions, amongst many other factors.Once geologic data is collected, it can be refined and integrated into a database that can be used to develop maps showing the trend, orientation, and extent of the adverse geological conditions. This information, delivered in a timely manner, allows mining personnel to be proactive in mine planning and support implementations, ultimately reducing the impacts of these features. This paper covers geologic exploratory methods, data organization, and the value of collecting and interpreting geologic information in coal mines to enhance safety and production.The implementation of the methods described above have been proven effective in predicting and mitigating adverse geologic conditions in underground coal mining. Consistent re-evaluation of data collection methods, geologic interpretations, mapping procedures, and communication techniques ensures continuous improvement in the accuracy of predictions and mitigation of adverse geologic conditions. Providing a concise record of the work previously done to track geologic conditions at a mine will allow for the smoothest transition during employee turnover and transitions. With refinements and standardization of data collection methods, such as those described in this paper, along with improvement in technology, the evaluation of adverse geologic conditions will evolve and continue to improve the safety and productivity of underground coal mining."

Kaolin tailings ponds play an important role in reclamation of land and water. Discharges impounded from kaolin plants include oversize fractions consisting of coarse kaolin, mica, quartz as well as magnetically extracted contaminents, acid filtrates, and plant washdown streams. Tailing ponds perform an essential function in sedimentation of particulates, blending and reoxygenation of liquid waste, and neutralization and clarification of discharge water. During the past fifteen years, most kaolin firms have segregated their coarse filler waste to allow for possible reclamation for production of delaminated coating clay. This excess coarse filler fraction constitutes a reserve for future coating clay production.

In today's economic environment, Canadian mines can ill afford to neglect their ventilation systems as they can consume 30- 40% of the electricity used in underground mines. In addition, Canadian mines can incur significant heating costs. For mines to be their most cost efficient they must embrace existing and emerging technology to optimize the use of their air; namely, maximizing its work in diluting and removing pollutants, limiting leakage, and avoiding the unnecessary consumption of costly fan pressure all the while ensuring the health of their workforce. Furthermore, in Canadian mines which are heavily dieselized there is great interest within the industry to convert from a rigid quantitative approach to ventilation, based upon engine size, towards a more flexible qualitative approach that provides credit for Clean engine technology" and permits ventilation supply to be driven and based upon pollutant demands. In the future, there is even the possibility that ventilation will only be required to supply oxygen to diesel equipment as the underground hands-on workforce is replaced by surface workers and tele-operation. Such changes will allow mine operators to minimize their electrical usage and operating costs, for in its simplest form the cost of running a fan is proportional to the quantity3; therefore, reducing current ventilation demands or limiting increases brought on by more stringent legislation, can produce very significant cost savings. CANMET, through ventilation surveys and use of its modern 3D-CANVENT ventilation simulator, have been demonstrating to the mining industry how ventilation can be optimally delivered at reduced costs. El-Equip with their leaky-feeder communications and MultiVENT monitoring and control system have facilitated mines to control fans and hence costs, and also monitor such ventilation parameters as pollutant concentrations. These two parties are now combining their efforts to develop an integrated air management system which will be demonstrated at CANMET's Experimental Mine Val D'Or, Quebec. With such an air management system, the ventilation engineer will have: 1) a simple to use simulator to design and test ventilation scenarios; 2) remote controls of fans, doors and regulators to implement changes; and 3) real-time monitoring of airflow, pollutant concentrations, and both vehicle identity and location to show whether changes are necessary. It is only when all three are available, that a mine's ventilation system can be operated at minimum cost.

Your thoughts on the current status of the global minerals industries? The global economic, technological, social and political changes of the last two decades of the 20th century resulted in the emergence of a restructured minerals industry. This industry is now based on a new cost-cutting philosophy; utilization of modern technology; productivity gains rather than production tonnages; diversification of mineral markets; and globalization of exploration, mining and processing. Quantity and tons used to be the focus. The emphasis today is on remaining competitive in the marketplace by lowering per-unit production costs as much as possible. What factors and trends will impact the minerals industries in this, the 21st century? A number of parameters will impact minerals operations and shape the future sustainability and growth of the minerals industries. Increased demand for minerals will be accompanied by the demand for technical advancements. We will also see a continued emphasis on health and safety, environmental stewardship, and education and training. Let me elaborate.

Introduction Tanco History Tanco is sometimes known as the Bernic Lake Mine. It is located about 180 km east-northeast of Winnipeg close to the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. Tanco operates an underground mine employing ramp access, room and pillar mining and shaft hoisting for the production of tantalum, lithium and cesium minerals. Tantalum recovery employs conventional gravity and centrifugal concentration methods along with a flotation process which recovers ultra-fine tantalum. All tantalum concentrates are shipped to Cabot Supermetals, Boyertown, Pa., for the production of tantalum chemicals and metals. Tanco also produces lithium products from spodumene ore. The lithium concentrates from Tanco are shipped worldwide for use in ceramics, specialty glass and mold powders. Cesium processing involves the dry grinding of pollucite as feed stock to the on-site chemical plant dedicated to the production of cesium formate, a high density drilling fluid. Tantalum milling operations commenced in 1969. In the early years of the operation, feed grades were three to four times as high as they are today. Coarse-grained tantalum mineralization with complete tantalum liberation at sizes of 300 µm allowed for easy recovery with conventional equipment such as spirals and shaking tables. Over the years, the process and feed material to the plant have drastically changed. Due to drastically reduced liberation sizes, efforts have been made to try to recover as much of the liberated particles as possible in order to maintain acceptable recoveries.

Drilling into coal mine roof strata to install roof bolts has the potential to release substantial quantities of respirable dust. Due to the proximity of drill holes to the breathing zone of roof bolting personnel, dusts escaping the holes and avoiding capture by the dust collection system pose a potential respiratory health risk. Controls are available to complement the typical dry vacuum collection system and minimize harmful exposures during the initial phase of drilling. This paper examines the use of a bit sleeve in combination with a dust hog-type bit to improve dust extraction during the critical initial phase of drilling. A twisted-body drill bit is also evaluated to determine the quantity of dust liberated by comparison to the dust hog-type bit. Based on these laboratory tests, the bit sleeve may reduce dust emissions by one-half during the initial phase of drilling before the drill bit is fully enclosed by the drill hole. Because collaring is responsible for the largest dust liberations, overall dust emissions can also be substantially reduced. The use of a twisted-body bit has minimal improvement on dust capture compared to the commonly used dust hog-type bit.
