Introduction One hundred years ago, a recent college graduate created the US aluminum industry. He found an economic way to crack the primeval bond that makes the metal so special. Aluminum doesn't "rust" - oxidize progressively. Rather, when exposed to air, it instantly forms a gem-hard but microscopic oxide coating. This seals off oxygen from the metal underneath. Scratch it and the seal reforms instantly. That tight chemical bond is the reason the metal is not found in nature; it exists only as a compound. The bond had to be broken to free the shiny metal. But once it is free, that self-sealing protection, alongside a remarkable strength-to-weight ratio, offers a marvelous material. Until 100 years ago, finding a way to do that economically was a challenge that defied science. Then it was solved, in a remarkable coincidence, on both sides of the Atlantic. And the way was paved for a material that would become the second most widely used metal in the world. Until that time, aluminum was a rare and precious metal. But then two young scientists independently invented the process that took aluminum outside the laboratory and into applications ranging from pots and pans to spacecraft. Discovery of aluminum Other major metals - copper, iron, lead, gold, and silver - had been used for thousands of years. But aluminum was entirely unknown until 1782, when French chemist Antoine Lavoisier suspected its presence. It was not actually discovered until Sir Humphry Davy, in England, detected it in clay in 1807. It was first isolated as a free metal only in 1825, by Denmark's Hans Christian Oersted. For years, laboratory methods yielded aluminum only in tiny amounts costing about $1200/kg ($545 per lb) - $13,333/kg ($6000 per lb) in today's dollars. Methods developed by French scientist Henri Sainte-Claire Deville in 1854 cut the cost to about $200/kg ($90 per lb). King Frederick VII of Denmark had a helmet of aluminum and gold. And Emperor Napoleon III of France reportedly served his most exalted guests at a state dinner with aluminum plates. He left the lower ranks to dine from pure gold. Deville and others continued to reduce production costs. But the price of aluminum still rivaled silver - $31/kg ($14 per lb) versus about $35/kg ($16 per lb) for silver. Then in 1884, a 2.8-kg (6.25-1b), 230-mm-tall (9-in.-tall) aluminum pyramid was cast as the tip of the Washington Monument. It was probably the first architectural use of aluminum. And it is still there after more than a century. The attractive properties of aluminum were obvious: it is lightweight but strong, conducts heat and electricity, reflects light and other electromagnetic radiation, and resists corrosion. But its commercial promise was blocked by its cost. In 1885, the price of aluminum was $17.70/kg ($8 per lb). It stayed there for the next couple of years until the Hall-Heroult process brought it down sharply. Hall-Heroult process lowers aluminum costs The characteristic that kept aluminum hidden so long continued to thwart chemists. Aluminum clings to oxygen so tightly that it is never found as a free metal in nature, and it is hard to break that bond chemically. The best chemical methods of the 1880s required sodium, and sodium itself was expensive. At Oberlin College in Ohio, chemistry professor Frank Fanning Jewett advised his students that anyone who could make aluminum inexpensive would do humanity a favor and get rich as well.

Geostatistics has been applied in many mining feasibility studies throughout the world during the last decade. Recently geostatistics has begun to be applied to the field of mining processes by attempting to aid in the definition of the best mining policy. For a feasibility study the grade-tonnage relationships give a reasonable order of magnitude estimate of the ore reserves within the deposit. But the reserves that will actually be recovered, will vary depending upon the mining methods and the technical means used. The profit earning capacity of the mining project is determined by a great many factors, such as for instance: accessibility of reserves to extracting machines, the haulage distance between the mine and the mill, the variability of produced ore (tonnage and grades) which could necessitate stockpiles or blending areas?

Indonesia has enormous mineral resources. Its population of more than 180 million people inhabit most of the more than 13,000 islands. The country is becoming a significant economic power in Southeast Asia. Indonesia is the largest Muslim country in the world. Java, its largest island, is the most densely populated area. The country's diversity is its strength. However, as only an estimated 16 million inhabitants speak bahasa Indonesia as the first language, communication problems endure. Although burdened with large debts, Indonesia has been able to service the debts better than most developing nations. This has given it high credibility and, with increasing frequency, creditor nations compete to provide Indonesia loans with the most the most favorable financial terms. Recent rising prices of petroleum crude has further improved Indonesia's economic status. It maintains a policy of stable oil prices that it promotes in OPEC, of which it is an influential member. As a result, Indonesia is becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors. The South East Consortium for International Development (SECID) is made up of 34 universities in the southeastern US and Indonesian partners Lembaga Afiliasi Penelitian dan Industri (LAPI) of the Institute of Technology in Bandung, West Java. SECID bid successfully against international competition to develop new academic programs and campus for the Sriwijaya University UNSRI) in Palembang, South Sumara. One of the most important considerations in the efficient operation of an under¬ground mine is the haulage system. Often the determining factor between profit or loss is the quick removal of ore and waste from the working places to secondary and main-line haulage areas, and so on to the outside. Important, too, is moving supplies from the surface to the working faces so that the loading process can continue with little interruption. Men must he transported in a rapid but safe manner. It has been through the efficient use and generally the combination of mine cars, track, belt conveyors and rubber-tired haulage equipment that underground operations have been able to compete with the more popular strip or surface mining. As near-surface ore bodies are exhausted, underground haulage will play an expanding part in economically furnishing the world's needs for all types of minerals. The choice of underground haulage equipment, wherever possible, should be one that will give the smallest overall cost of ore removal during the life of the mine while meeting necessary safety requirements. The reader is referred to Sec. 12 for equipment such as scrapers and load-dump-¬haul units that perform loading as well as haulage duties. 14.1-MINE CARS AND TRACK NILES E. GROSVENOR Main-Line and Secondary Haulage-Many mines today use a combination of belt and rail haulage. Even if a- belt system is used to carry the product from the face to the surface, track is used to transport workmen and supplies. A track system, when properly installed, will provide interruption-free and safe haulage. Schrecengost 2 lists the following as major advantages of track haulage: 1. Safety in transporting men in and out of the mine in personnel cars. 2. Easy and rapid transportation of supervisory personnel. 3. A temporary shutdown occasioned by a roof fall or power failure along the haulage system will not shut down the production areas. 4. Quick availability of repair parts and supplies. 5. Large pieces of coal or rock can be handled without damage to the haulage equipment. 6. In areas where quality fluctuates noticeably, different cars may be separated out for special preparation. 7. Rock or equipment may be loaded and moved out of the mine without interference with the production or preparation of the coal. 14.1.1-MINE CARS Mine cars with steel bodies are used in all types of present-day mining. Wooden cars usually are more bulky and less resistant to wear and damage, but are more easily repaired. Regardless of the type of mine car selected, it is most practical to standardize on one type or make to simplify repairs and limit the amount of spare parts necessary to stock. Rigid-body flat-bottomed cars are simpler and usually lower than others of equal capacity. In the operation of today's large scale ore-processing mills, it is extremely important to have some way of making an objective evalu¬ation of the performance of the available flotation reagents. Attempts to do this may often result in inconclusive findings since the magnitude of the difference in the mill results for any two reagents is apt to be quite small compared to the variability introduced by the process and 'the analytical procedures used to measure them. In cases where two reagents give vastly; different mill results, evaluation becomes a simple matter and as such deserves no further attention here. A question of primary concern, however, is how a mill can go about evaluating the performance of two reagents which may, for example, give a difference of only 0.001% copper in the-tailings or of 0.2% in copper recovery. The casual observer may feel that such small differences may be of little importance, but in a mill-whose daily tonnage is between 30 and 40 thousand, these differences could mean a substantial savings. Before the presentation of an actual example of a reagent testing scheme designed for just this-purpose, perhaps a few minutes should be devoted to a review of some statistical methodology to be used later in the discussion.

The Rocky Mountain region contains part of the paleocontinental shelf that lay in Arizona and New Mexico through Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming into Montana and North Dakota. The shelf was bounded by the northeast-southwest-trending Transcontinental arch and the Cordilleran miogeocline in late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic time. Major tectonic features that affected middle Phanerozoic sediments on the shelf were the Big Snowy trough and Williston basin in the north and the ancestral Rocky Mountains in the central part of the region. The Zuni uplift and similar positive areas occurred along the axis of the Transcontinental arch in the southern part. The late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic sedimentary rocks record transgressive-regressive marine cycles in which the Cordilleran shelf and much of the adjacent craton were inundated by epeiric seas. Early in the Carboniferous, an epeiric sea covered most of the shelf. Greater topographic relief developed in Late Mississippian, was at a maximum in Middle Pennsylvanian, and then diminished through Permian and Triassic time. The development in the Pennsylvanian Period of horsts and grabens along northwest- trending faults on the northwest flank of the Transcontinental arch resulted in the ancestral Rocky Mountain system. The eastern part of the region was emergent by Middle Triassic, and the emergence lasted until Middle Jurassic, owing to uplift along the Transcontinental arch. During the early part of the Mesozoic, the sediments were dominantly terrigenous and were deposited mostly in shallow littoral marine environments shifting to continental. Most middle Phanerozoic structural elements within the area of the shelf are characterized by lineaments that have either an east-northeast or a conjugate north-northwest trend. The east-northeast lineaments closely parallel the northeast trend of the continental slope (miogeocline) in Nevada to southern Idaho. The conjugate set closely parallels the northwesterly continuation of the miogeocline north of an approximately right- angle bend in south-central Idaho. The northeasterly trending Transcontinental arch and the northwest-trending margin of the Canadian Shield are parallel structural elements with the north- east and northwest trends of the miogeocline. The rectangular lineament pattern on the shelf suggests a system of rectilinear fractures within the underlying Precambrian crystalline basement rocks that moved several times in the Phanerozoic in response to external forces applied against the continental crust. Movement of these blocks influenced erosion, deposition, and lithofacies of the sediments in middle Phanerozoic time. Zones of crustal weakness, represented by the lineaments bounding these blocks, probably were influential in localizing sedimentary mineral accumulations and petroleum deposits, as well as later igneous intrusions, volcanism, and emplacement of hydrothermal ores. Igneous activity in this region was rare during the middle Phanerozoic, but these conjugate fractures seem to have been avenues for later passage of hydrothermal solutions responsible for ore emplacement.

"The objective of this work is to validate a methodology for spatially predicting the fracture intensity, defined as the average fracture area per unit volume. First, using the observations from drill holes, the fracture intensity is directly inferred at the support of drill-hole composites based on a Terzaghi correction. Subsequently, the composite values are interpolated to larger blocks. The methodology is tested on sets of simulated fracture networks, in which each fracture consists of a disc with a random diameter, random position and random orientation. For each of these simulated networks, one can calculate the actual fracture intensity within any region of space, based on geometric considerations. A regular sampling mesh is then defined to emulate a set of vertical drill holes and the proposed methodology is applied to predict the fracture intensity, both globally and locally. The actual and predicted fracture intensities are finally compared, showing that predictions are unbiased, insofar as, on average, the prediction error is always close to zero. Also, the error dispersion increases when the support of the prediction decreases, which is consistent with the well-known support effect. In practice, the proposed methodology allows predicting fracture intensity based exclusively on drill-hole information, without the need for simulating fracture networks in space, hence its interest. INTRODUCTION The characterization of fractures in rock masses is an important part in the evaluation of mechanical and hydraulic properties of rocks. Fractures have a large impact in disciplines such as reservoir engineering, safety of underground storage of CO2 or of nuclear waste, assessment of high-enthalpy geothermal installations, safety of mining exploitations, efficiency of in-situ leaching operations or of extraction by block-caving. As a rock mass property, fractures must be characterized in the three-dimensional space, whereas observations are limited to 1D (drill holes) and 2D (outcrops, drift walls), moreover very often to rather short stations, so that the available data are subject to geometric bias, truncation and censoring. Fracture characteristics includes the number of fracture sets and, for each set, the number, orientation, spacing, location, shape and size of the fractures must be inferred from data sampling. Some important parameters that are considered nearly in all models are fracture intensity and fracture size."

In this paper, long-term measurements in five underground mines are presented to demonstrate how these measurements can be applied to stability evaluations and design of underground excavations. These case studies address both the global aspects of strata response to mining activities as well local ground behavior and support loading. The measurements include static (stress and deformation) and geophysical. Case studies quantify pillar behavior, roof-floor deformation patterns, overburden response, and microseismic activities. Large-scale studies quantify the nonuniform nature of overburden deformation and collapse. Local measurements address yield and stable pillar load deformation characteristics, as well as the performance of support systems under combined axial and lateral loads.

An innovative biological process is described for the treatment of cyanide-, metals- and nitrate-contaminated mine process water. The technology was tested for its ability to detoxify cyanide and nitrate and to immobilize metals in wastewater from agitation cyanide leaching. A pilot-scale demonstration is described in which a pilot plant was constructed to demonstrate the technology on a mine process-waste stream at a mine in Nevada. The demonstration was performed jointly under the Mine Waste Technology Program (MWTP), funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the US De¬partment of Energy's (DOE) Western Environmental Technology Office (WETO) under Interagency Agree¬ment Number DW89938513-01-0. The Superfund Innovative Technology Evaluation (SITE) demonstration program was also involved in the project. MSE Technology Applications Inc. (MSE), Butte, MT, was the contractor responsible for conducting the project, and Pintail Systems Inc., Aurora, CO, was the technology provider. The pilot-scale unit was field-tested at Echo Bay's McCoy/Cove Mine southwest of Battle Mountain, NV. The biotreatment process was considered successful in destroying cyanide in the mine process water. The process was also determined to be effective in removing metals. The pH was consistently neutralized and nitrates were successfully removed from the mine process water. From the results of these pilot-scale tests, it was concluded that the biotreatment process potentially of¬fers an innovative, cost-effective alternative for the treatment of mining wastewaters.

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydropower development of Jiu river in Romania, in the narrow gorge sector includes two diversion HPP and a small hydro plant that provides the minimum required flow downstream: CHE Dumitra , CHE Bumbesti and MHC Livezeni (Table 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. Most modern crushing and grinding facilities are automated to some degree. Some, of course, have a very minimum of automatic control whereas others utilize very complex control equipment. However, with very few exceptions, the re has not been a new basic control philosophy applied in this field in the past seven years. The philosophy has been broadened in scope and applied to larger plants, some of them with data logging and so- called computer control, but almost always the same tried and proven basic control philosophy is the basis for the control system. New types of control devices to better implement the automatic control have been developed and are continuing to be developed. These devices and their application will be explained and the advantages and disadvantages of each will be discussed. Automatic lubrication of plant equipment is most essential, but this paper will not cover these systems. The use of data logging and computer analysis of the data obtained is fairly recent and it is hoped that by careful analysis of this information that new and better basic control philosophy will be forthcoming. This paper will describe the basic philosophy applied in its simplest form to several types of crushing and grinding equipment, and it will describe how it is being expanded to more complex systems. Some of the economics with regard to first cost, return on investment and maintenance will be covered.

Employing a combination of two types of polyelcctrolyte might become necessary to enhance both the settling rate of the flocs and the water clarity of a fine-particle suspension in a high-capacity thickening process. The sequence of addition, mixing, type and dosage of polymer all affect the overall performance and capacity of a thickening process. For the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings, the cylinder test results showed that two different techniques may be used to achieve the required performance, i.e., a high settling rate of the flocs and the deisired underflow density and overflow water clarity. The required performance can be achieved by either adjusting the pH prior to anionic polyelectrolvte flocculation or using a combination of polymer flocculant and coagulant (dual-polymer system). The dynamic thickening test results showed that only the approach using a dualpolymer system is capable of meeting the required performance. The effects of polvelectrolvte dosage, the sequence and numbers of polyelectrolyte addition, the feed concentration, the bed level and the rake speed on the settling rate, underflow percent solids and water clarity were studied in cylinder tests and in a laboratory dynamic thickening unit. The dynamic test is especially valuable in evaluating the addition and mixing of polymers. The results were evaluated quantitatively using total suspended solids in supernatant, underflow density and capacity per unit of settling area per unit of time. The objective of this study was to quantify and explain some of the parameters involved in the sedimentation of copper flotation tailings.

Three sedimentation ponds had their performance evaluated before and after installation of modifications. Each pond had a floating baffle installed, two had siphon outlets, and one had a floating outlet device. Baffles inhibited short circuiting, and the outlet devices retarded flow following a rainfall event and drained the pond, creating a large storage volume to maximize detention time. Total suspended solids and settleable solids tests were measured on samples of influent and effluent to evaluate pond performance. Particle size analyses were conducted on samples containing measurable amounts of solids. Performance improved in each pond, with baffles providing the major improvement.

The Legislature of the State of Colorado adopted House Bill 1223, "The Colorado Surface Coal Mining Reclamation Act" (The State Act), in 1979. This Act provided for the creation of a state regulatory program as accommodated within Public Law 95-87, "The Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977" (SMCRA). Section 34-33-121(2)(a) of the Colorado Revised Statutes (CRS) and Section 516(b) of Public Law 95-87, identically require the underground coal mine operator to "Adopt measures consistent with known technology in order to prevent subsidence causing material damage to the extent technologically and economically feasible, maximize mined stability, and maintain the value and reasonably foreseeable use of such surface lands, except in those instances where the mining technology used requires planned subsidence in a predictable and controlled manner..." On July 23, 1980, the Colorado Mined Land Reclamation Board adopted regulations to administer and enforce the State Act. Amendments to the Rules, including the subsidence regulations were adopted by the Board in August of 1981. These regulations require the prediction, monitoring and mitigation of "material damage" caused by subsidence.

Falconbridge, Ltd. operates six mines (the strathcona, Fraser, Lockerby, Onaping, East and Kidd Creek) in the Sudbury and Timmins districts of northern Ontario (Fig. 1). These mines vary in depth to approximately 1500m and experience a wide variety of ground conditions. Problems of greatest concern include rockbursting, backfill pillar stability, wall and pillar stability, and the use of cable anchors. A study was initiated approximately two years ago to identify how numerical models could aid in the examination and possible understanding or solution of these problems. This paper discusses the use of numerical models at Falconbridge and describes a case history of their use in examination of rockbursting at the Strathcona Mine.

"In the mineral processing, clay minerals have negative effects on the flotation of valuable minerals. In this study, we investigated how the floatability of malachite (CuCO3·Cu(OH)2) is affected by presence of the clay minerals in the fundamental aspects. Flotation experiments were conducted by using Na2S and PAX (potassium amyl xanthate), and the floatability of malachite was compared between the cases in the presence and absence of clay minerals. The results showed that floatability was greater in the absence of clay minerals than in the presence of clay minerals and decreased with increasing weight percent of kaolinite under same conditions applied. In addition to examine how clay minerals affect malachite floatability, we conducted flotation experiment with changing clay adding order. The results indeed showed that malachite floatability was affected by clay adding sequence. INTRODUCTION The demand of copper is growing as industrial development increases, but mineral resources are limited. Therefore, studies for Cu oxide flotation are being conducted to improve their recovery(1-3). However the mining industry is well aware of the difficulty in treating copper ores in the presence of clay minerals(4). Clay minerals have unique properties and these properties may affect flotation. In the previous studies, the effect of slime coating of clay minerals on flotation was investigated(4-6). For example, Zhao and Peng (2014), Peng and Zhao (2015), and Arnold and Aplan (1986) found that clay slime coating on chalcopyrite, chalcocite and coal surfaces through the electrostatic attraction reduced surface hydrophobicity and then depressed the flotation. Other researchers have also reported clay minerals have impact on pulp rheology. Especially in the case of bentonite, pulp viscosity increased with increasing amount of bentonite and the higher pulp viscosity have deleterious effect on copper recovery(7, 8). However, these studies only focus on slime coatings and pulp rheological behavior. Forbes et al. attempted to decoupling rheology and slime coatings effect on flotation but this study has limitation that individual role of two clay species either attached to mineral or suspended in bulk solution was excluded(9). Hence, in this study, we aimed to investigating the effects of individual clay (suspended and attached) on malachite flotation."

The Humphrey Preparation Plant of Christopher Coal Company, located in Monongalia County, West Virginia, was built to process the combined production of the Pursglove No. 15 and the Humphrey No. 7 Mines. Both Mines operate in the Pittsburgh Seam, primarily producing Metallurgical Fuel destined for by-product ovens in the Pittsburgh District. The results of an extensive core-drilling program have established sufficient reserves of low-sulfur coal to justify a 20,000 ton-per-day preparation plant, This is the story of the preparation phase of this combined operation. The Bureau of Mines investigated technologies for determining the integrity of in situ leach mining wells. A self-contained trailer-mounted well integrity testing system (WITS) was designed and built to enable rapid testing of well casings for leaks as required by environmental regulations. The WITS utilizes two inflatable packers to seal off the entire casing length or any portion thereof. Water pressure is built between the packers to the desired test pressure, and the presence or absence of casing leaks is determined by monitoring the pressure drop between the packers. A winch and steel cable are used to run the packers in and out of the well. The WITS underwent an industry field test at the Irigaray in situ uranium leaching mine near Buffalo, WY. A total of 37 wells with an average depth of 225 ft (69 m) were tested at an average rate of four wells per 8-h shift with a two-person operating crew. This represents a 75-pct time savings and an 83-pct labor savings compared to the rigid-pipe method previously used at the mine, with which a three-person crew tested an average of one well per shift.
