Colloidal interactions play a critical role in mineral processing, including grinding, physical separation (particularly flotation), dewatering, and tailings management. Despite great energy input in comminution to liberate valuables from gangues, heterocoagulation between valuables and gangues would prevent the separation of valuables from gangues. On the other hand, selective coagulation/flocculation to increase the size of desired fine particles could enhance physical separation and dewatering, while dispersion is needed for fine grinding. To control the state of colloidal dispersions by creating favorable conditions, it is of paramount importance to study colloidal interactions in a relevant system and understand underlying mechanisms. This review summarizes recent advances in developing the-state-of-the-art techniques and novel methods of measuring colloidal forces, including atomic force microscope, surface force apparatus, zeta potential distribution measurement, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation, and our recently developed integrated dynamic force apparatus. The basic principle of each technique was introduced first, followed by a summary of critical information derived for the relevant mineral processing systems. Finally, the pros and cons of each technique were discussed to emphasize the use of complementary techniques that assist in solving fundamental problems in mineral processing.

Queensland?s underground coal industry, as a whole, has arguably the best gas monitoring systems in the world. Each mine utilizes real time, tube bundle and onsite ultra fast gas chromatograph systems. Queensland?s mining legislation has specific requirements for mine gas monitoring but there is no requirement for all three techniques. Industry has however identified the need for all three and adopted this as a standard, resulting in over sixty thousand gas results collected each day. Automated monitoring systems are programmed to alarm for gas concentrations, gas ratios and explosibility. These alarms are then used to initiate predetermined actions to take control of the situation and prevent the compromise of safety to workers and the loss of resources. Dedicated software packages have been developed to assist in the interpretation of the large volume of results generated. The real time systems are used for real time warning, essential for incidents such as belt fires. Tube bundle systems suit long term trending used for identification of the onset of spontaneous combustion or for the determination of explosibility during the routine sealing of worked areas. Gas chromatograph analysis is used to provide a complete analysis and provides results for hydrogen and ethylene, key gases used in the assessment of spontaneous combustion. It is also crucial during significant spontaneous combustion events and coal fires to use gas chromatography to determine the explosibility status of the underground atmosphere otherwise the severity of the situation is likely to be under estimated. This paper outlines the need for all three techniques for assessing the underground status and outlines advantages and disadvantages of each.

The ubiquity of big data, internet of things (IoT), and smart devices is radically changing society; our personal lives are being tracked, digitally motivated through gamification, where information has become an addiction at all income levels, genders, and generations. These forces should not be held at bay in mining; rather, we should embrace and take advantage of this phenomenon to improve safety and productivity. It is time to rethink long-held conventions behind Fleet Management Systems, such as permanently mounted hardware, connecting through cables and Bblack boxes^, equipment centric rather than operator-centric, wireless requirements, minimal to no feedback to the operator, and high costs. We should also reconsider how we are collecting much of our safety, training, and preoperational forms on paper that then, must be entered into computer systems for compliance, and rarely if ever used in analytics, rather than entering the data directly into a digital device. Collecting safety and location data directly digitally also unlocks the information contained in safety forms and audits enabling new data mining and analytical approaches. Managing then gaining value from this new, greatly expanded mountain of largely unstructured data, requires the use of modern tools and approaches, such as gamification and big data, as well as skill sets, not traditionally available in mines. Furthermore, tablets can now provide a better user experience as well as new sensors when compared with traditional fleet management systems (Mining Magazine 2019, 2016, 2015), at a fraction of the cost, employing the extremely esthetic and engaging visuals derived from the video game industry. Real case studies of these applications of both technology and approach, such as gamification, show that these tracking technologies can bring high visibility and large amounts of data to even the smallest operations and the challenge of making use of the data can be facilitated through the application of gamification. As with our personal smart devices, these technologies are poised to deliver huge improvements in operator feedback, tracking, and performance management, at a much lower cost per unit.

The physical relief is a variable of utmost significance in the course of the analysis, evaluation, design and management of the visual environment. In this sense, there are cases where it would be desirable to isolate the relief from the other elements making up the visual environment and to investigate its visual value separately. Such cases include the technical works that cause major and permanent alterations to the relief, as well as the works, of which the spatial arrangement depends on the morphology of the ground. Slopes, distances, hypsometric difference values, viewsheds are elements of the relief that affect the visual value of a landscape, but also the ability of a particular landscape to accept and absorb new activities. This paper describes an evaluation and prediction model of the visual value of the landforms. A questionnaire survey takes place in order to investigate the public preference, using a sample of 221 persons in the broader area of Athens. The means used to demonstrate the various forms of reliefs are 32 perspective digital relief images. Following this and in order to investigate the elements of the relief that affect its visual value, 20 quantitative indices were developed and examined so as to select the best ones. Linear prediction models of the visual value were investigated from the previous elements, through a regression process. The applications of the proposed model in physical environment planning are many, such as the prediction of visual impact by arranging works that alter the relief of a region, as it happens in mining, metallurgical and waste disposal sites.

Coal mining today is confronted with numerous problems, all of which affect in some way the ability of the operator to produce profitably. The major endeavor, therefore, is a quest for cost lowering techniques. Complete belt haulage from shuttle car to river barge appeared to be a step in such a direction. A deep look into all aspects proved this to be more involved than just the installation of such a belt line. With this paper, we will attempt to present to you the problems and requirements of design and installation of an all-belt haulage system, believed to be the longest underground belt installation in the world at this time. The first and most important item is the justification of an all-belt haulage system. The following is a brief history of the coal property and the facts affecting our decision.

Tunnels and underground projects are inherently more risky than vertical projects, which typically utilize more conventional design and construction approaches and are undertaken in the context of relatively ascertained and defined conditions. On tunnel and under-ground projects, there are a host of special risk factors, including unknowns and uncertainties as to the physical and behavioral characteristics of the ground, the inextricable interdependence and necessary interaction of design decisions and construction means and methods with those ground conditions as well as the manner in which risks are allocated among project participants for un-anticipated subsurface conditions. Public-private partnerships (PPP) projects, in their own respects (and independent of any major subsurface component), pose significant risk for all private sector participants. The main driver of owners to procure projects using PPP is financial, as often all, or substantially all, of the design and construction risk are transferred to the private sector consortium, including the design-build (D-B) team. For a concerning number of those public owners, that risk transfer regime includes rather onerous and aggressive contractual terms that allocate to the private sector participants substantially all risks associated with the encountering of unanticipated subsurface conditions. These aggressive risk allocation provisions, while directly impacting project participants upstream of the consulting engineer, have an indirect and corresponding risk intensifying effect upon consulting engineer professional liability exposure. There are many factors that result in increased professional liability exposure for consulting engineers involved in PPP projects. The Alcan Smelter project at Lynemouth on the Northumbrian coast draws cooling water for the power station through shafts and tunnels from the North Sea. The sea at this part of the coast is frequently very rough and even in calm weather the coastal currents are strong. The adjacent coal mine makes use of these currents to disperse colliery waste and discharges into the sea some thirty thousand tons each week. In consequence the sea bed is continuously shifting and the sea is black and turbid. Construction of sea shafts under these conditions presents difficulties as drilling from a floating vessel is hazardous and sea bed activity of divers is greatly hindered by the entire absence of visibility. After considering several alternatives a method of construction was agreed with the Consultants in which the drilling and also the lining of the shaft would be completed in sequence from an eight legged work barge (GEM 126). Each shaft would be drilled to full depth and a steel cylinder, with its ends closed temporarily, would be lowered into the hole and grouted into the formation to form a full-length permanent lining. The bell mouth for each shaft would be constructed in advance to form part of the cylindrical casing. On interception of the shaft by its appropriate tunnel the lower end of the cylindrical casing would be cut away and the internal walling of the shaft installed from below. After completion of construction the shafts and tunnels would be flooded and the bell mouth sealing covers removed by divers.

Due to the large installed electrical power and the large number of electric drives in minerals and mining plants power factor compensation and harmonic filtering has always been an important issue. For the design of harmonic filter and power factor compensation installations several approaches can be taken. The paper describes different concepts and their advantages and analyzes special requirements and design considerations for minerals and mining plants. It also highlights areas where problems can occur and which points need to be addressed carefully. Optimized designs and solutions are discussed in case studies and the resulting energy savings and benefits for the plant operation are shown.

Three rock fracture parameters define three points along empirical cumulative size (of rock fragments) distribution curves at Inspiration copper mine. These parameters are: rock quality designation (RQD), longest piece of intact rock and % of +1 inch. The RQD and the longest piece are actually measured on drill hole cores whereas % of +1 inch is visually estimated on the same cores. These size distribution curves are then utilized in a variety of engineering applications such as; slope instability analysis, blast design, copper recovery prediction from heap leaching, etc. The three rock fracture parameters for two dominant rock types (porphyry and schist) in the pit had to be estimated separately due to different rock fracture characteristics.' Both ordinary kriging (OK) with measured hard data only and soft kriging (SFTK) with hard and soft data were used to estimate each parameter. The cross validation of 100 measured sample values served as the-basis for evaluating the potential benefits of SFTK over OK. Use of subjective information during SFTK required obtaining (prior) probability distributions for all three rock fracture parameters. These distributions were obtained from the typical rock fracture parameters observed in drill hole cores falling inside the geologically interpreted structural domains with varying degrees. of fracture intensity and also through direct mapping along the exposed bench faces. Two different types of soft information were developed for this study; namely, Type "A" and Type "K". The former is based on sample distribution of fracture parameters whereas the latter is based on two step estimation designed to narrow the range of variation observed in data Type "A". The results of the cross validation were analyzed using a linear regression of actual values versus estimated values. The results confirm an improvement on the estimates made by SFTK with hard and. both types of soft data over those produced by OK with hard data only.

A computer-oriented systems simulator (CMHS) has been developed for analysis of continuous materials handling systems. Special emphasis has been placed in the model on several features which are unique to these systems. These features include periodic pattern of material arrival from several sources, several types of material to be transferred, material dispatch processes, intermediate storage capacities, and multiple material destinations. Both the deterministic factors of the continuous material handling system such as the physical decomposition of the system and the scheme and schedule of its operation and the stochastic factors such as variations of material arrival, material pattern on the conveyor, and avail-abilities of the system elements are considered in the simulator.

Downhill, or regenerative conveyors have always been a challenge to the design engineer due to their natural instability under load. The last decade has seen the appearance of high tonnage, high negative lift conveyors with several hundred meters of drop. These conveyors have made necessary the development of new braking systems and intelligent drive controls to address their starting and stopping requirements under various load conditions. This paper describes the critical design criteria of large regenerative conveyors and some of the advances in mechanical braking systems and drive control technology developed by Conveyor Dynamics, Inc. (CDI) to address their specific requirements.

Climate change presents risks to mine infrastructure, operations and long-term obligations to protect environmental conditions. Management strategies and design of infrastructure and containment systems based on past or current climate conditions may be inadequate in the future if changes in climate are not taken into account in planning for mine operations, decommissioning, closure and post-closure. Data-driven assessments using climate model projections of the future can be used to quantify: • Changes in site-specific risks to mine structures, access, containment facilities, operations and staff safety. • Changes in vegetation and water balance/chemistry, and potential for acid mine drainage, erosion and design failure. Climate- and weather-related risks are a serious threat to the mining industry, but risk transfer solutions can alleviate these vulnerabilities. Mining companies can protect themselves through bespoke solutions which provide operators, investors and buyers with protection against weather-related disruptions to operations by hedging to smooth revenues. Using risk transfer structures to mitigate climate risks is a mechanism that is available to all types of mining operations world-wide. In this paper, we describe methods for evaluating site-specific climate change impacts and developing risk transfer solutions to mitigate their effects. EVALUATING MINE RISKS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE The best available tool for understanding potential future changes to the earth’s climate system are global climate models (GCMs) (IPCC, 2014). GCMs are computer simulations of the climate system which include the atmosphere, ocean, land surface, cryosphere and biosphere. Because of the computational demands of running a global model for many decades, the spatial resolutions of the GCM grids are necessarily coarse, typically on the order of 100-300 km. GCM data are therefore suitable for evaluating future physical risks on global or continental scales, but may not be appropriate for evaluating location-specific risks (e.g. Kotamarthi et al., 2016). For site-specific, quantitative physical risk assessment, GCM projection data are “downscaled” or adapted for use at the local level using statistical techniques together with observed data (statistical downscaling) or using high-resolution regional climate models (RCMs) that focus on a single geographic region and have spatial resolutions of 10-50 km (dynamical downscaling). Downscaling bridges the gap between the GCM scale and regional/local scale. Through the downscaling process, new information is added to the GCM output from observations and/or RCMs, resulting in patterns for weather variables that are more consistent with local terrain and weather influences. Downscaled climate change projections for the mine site are selected considering mine location and geography, the availability of local observations, and the performance of the downscaling method and global/regional models used to develop the projection in simulating the variable under study. Where possible, we use projections from an ensemble of global and regional model runs spanning a range of future greenhouse gas (GHG) scenarios.

Evidence for the floatability of sulphide minerals without collector is analyzed and it is shown that results obtained with ores, in contrast to those with single minerals or mineral mixtures, depend on many additional variables, some identified and others not. Because of the prevailing low levels and costs of collectors for most sulphide ores, it is unlikely that collectorless flotation will have commercial applications, so that continued research on the subject may be justifiable on theoretical but not on practical grounds.

Truck/shovel systems are a major form of materials handling in open-pit mines in spite of the high associated capital and operating costs. Mine management is usually faced with a decision to purchase new equipment in order to support the steadily increasing on production. These decisions involve a high degree of uncertainty with respect to future demands and technical developments. This paper describes a computer simulation model for evaluating the optimum equipment fleet in an open-pit mining operation. The system is based on a stochastic simulation program which accounts for the various mining and economic parameters. It calculates the type of equipment and the optimal number of trucks needed to meet the production targets. Two types of selection criteria: maximum rate of production or minimum cost can be applied.

Grinding balls, simple in shape, are actually sophisticated machine components, and essential elements of mineral grinding mills. Their physical properties and quality must be adequate to achieve design life and grinding mission with few failures. Consistant properties and freedom from breakage are essential. Size, mass, hardness profile, chemistry, and microstructure are important variables which should be designed, specified, controlled, and verified to achieve optimal mill performance. Failure to specify ball properties in detail or failure to obtain required ball properties and quality can cause milling productivity losses and excessive costs that could endanger a milling operations survival in the competive mineral industry.

Hornestake's Mclaughlin Mine is the first commercial application of pressure oxidation pretreatment of gold prior to cyanidation. Inherent to the autoclave process are several liquid/solid separations. Flocculant consumption represents a significant portion of the consumable reagent costs at McLaughlan. This paper focuses on the efforts of the Operating, Metallurgy and Engineering groups to improve thickener operation and minimize flocculant consumption. An operating philosophy incorporating feed solids control, increasing flocculant dilution water and minimizing flocculant solution shear has resulted in a reduction in 1986 flocculant costs of $0.054/t ($0.06 st) versus 1985 costs. Additional changes are projected to result in a further cost reduction of $0.20/t ($0.22/.st) in 1987.

An investigation of multi-shaft airflow problems by the author in 1976 (1) was presented in the hope of arousing considerable written comment, but in fact-. only one contribution (2) was forthcoming. The investigation in this paper is taken several stages fur¬ther, because the matter is of major importance in many American hard rock mines with complex networks extending over thousands of meters vertically. The examples used have all been generated thermodynamical¬ly and checked by motive column (denisty) calculations. Dry air has been used to reduce the amount of time spent on the rather complex calculations, but it has been shown (3) that the principals developed apply equally well to air/vapor/water mixtures. Initially the subject is investigated using both thermodynamic and motive column analyses. The latter part of the paper concentrates on a motive column presentation. Both methods are, of course, equally valid and give identical answers to any situation when correctly applied, as is shown in the worked examples.

The broken hill proprietary company Ltd., Australia's only steel producer, has come a long way. Since 1885 to reach today's. Capacity of 6.6 million long tons of ingot steel per year.* its Newcastle steel complex in New South Wales, located 100 miles north of Sydney and on-stream since 1915, has likewise shown continued impressive growth (fig. 1). The most recent expansion plans at Newcastle call for sub¬stantially increasing its production, with the help of some added facilities, but principally relying on the increase in efficiency of the furnace operation. Its modern raw materials blending system will playa major role in meeting Newcastle's new targets.

The first phase of an investigation of the chemical composition of subsurface water and the hydrochemical processes in and near the abandoned Nordic tailings at Elliot Lake, Ontario, was conducted in 1979. The Nordic area, which covers 85 hectares with an average thickness of 10 m and overlies deposits of permeable glaciofluvial sand, contains 15 million tonnes of tailings with 4-7% pyrite. Nests of standpipe piezometers installed at three locations on the tailings indicate that seepage through the tailings is predominantly downward. The water table in the tailings slopes from the north side of the tailings dam, where it is within a metre of surface to the south side near the tailings dam, where it is approximately 10 m below surface. When they were deposited during the period from 1957 to 1968, the tailings contained pore water at a pH of about 8 resulting from neutralization treatment in the mill. At the three piezometer nests, the pH increases from 3 near the water table to 7 near the bottom of the tailings. The pore water in the tailings is gradually becoming acidic because of oxidation of pyrite in the zone above the water table. The concentrations of Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn and Pb are high in the shallow acidic zone and much lower in the deeper neutral zone. Concentrations of 226Ra range from 30 to 230 pCi/L. At the three sites concentrations of major ions in the permeable sand a short interval beneath the tailings indicate 226Ra presence of tailings seepage, but Ra concentrations are only 2 to 8 pCi/L. Greater downward penetration of 226Ra probably occurs in the area closer to the tailings dam. Monitoring of a network of multilevel bundle piezometers installed in permeable sand that extends southward from beneath the tailings indicates the occurrence of a plume of tailingsderived water containing high concentrations of Ca, Mg, Fe and S04 that extend 400 m downgradient from the tailings dam. The total dissolved solids decline from 20,000 at the dam to less than 500 mg/L at the identifiable downgradient periphery of the plume. A much smaller but distinct plume of water with high heavy metal concentrations and 226Ra in the range of 10 to 130 pCi/L extends from beneath the dam for a distance of 15 m. The pH of the groundwater in this heavy metal-radium plume is 4 to 5, whereas elsewhere in zone of groundwater with high dissolved solids, the pH is above 6. INTRODUCTION In looking over the diversity of the papers that are being presented during this meeting on The Industrial Practice of Fine Coal Processing one cannot help but be impressed with the progress the industry has made in beneficiating fine raw coals, and in the number of innovations that are under study to increase recovery and to improve the quality of the finest size particles produced at a preparation plant. Those who are not in our industry, who look at the technical program, might be confused, when they see that the papers include such topics as cleaning to zero and heavy media cyclone cleaning 28M x 100M; application and performance of fine coal jigs, tables, hydrocyclones, spirals, and flotation; filtration, dewatering and thermal drying; and ancilliary aspects such as fines handling, instrumentation and process control plus screening and liberation. This is an observation and not a criticism of the diversity of papers being presented. The program fits within the parameters of fine coal preparation as the term "coal preparation" is defined, but perhaps not as the term "fine coal" is defined. Admittedly these definitions are sometimes loose. However, each should be made more definitive if a meaningful fine coal preparation overview is to be possible. COAL PREPARATION DEFINED In the opinion of the writer, the term "coal preparation" should be defined as including all work activities that are performed on all components of a run-of-mine coal from the time it leaves a surface reserve or an underground portal, until all components are either ready for shipment or are stowed on, or in the earth in an environmentally acceptable manner. This definition excludes the work that is performed to improve coal quality or handleability inside the mine or pit. This work is commonly called "face" or "pit" preparation. FINE COAL DEFINED The term "fine coal" means different things to different people. In the past, anthracite finer than No. 3 Buckwheat (3/16 in.) was considered fines which often were discarded from the breaker as an unsalable by product; and bituminous coals finer that about 1/4 in. (slack) were either discarded or sold at cost to prevent an accumulation of "no bills" which referred to a product having no immediate sale. Although a standard definition of "fine coal" is yet to be accepted by the industry, a designation of coals by particle-size range has evolved through the wide use of three-circuit flowsheets, wherein the optimum size range by washer type determines the size fractions: a coarse-coal circuit for the plus 3/8 in., a -11- coal circuit for the 3/8 in. x 28 Mesh, and a fine-coal circuit for the remaining 28 Mesh x 0. Logically, the term "fine coal" should refer to some resultant size fraction or some top size by zero. This definition should include a 28 Mesh x 0 feed to a flotation cell but should exclude a 28 x 100 Mesh size fraction fed to a heavy media cyclone. Failure to include the resultant sizes in the definition precludes accounting of the full range of particle sizes present in the feed to the plant. Since the 28 Mesh x 0 fraction is treated in the final circuit of the three discreet washing circuits, now almost always used in U.S. commercial applications, and since it contains all of its resultant sizes, in the writer's opinion, it should be designated "fine coal". FINE COAL CLEANING Cleaning coal fines, which in the past was at best marginally profitable, is now an essential part of coal preparation strategy for a number of reasons : 1.
