A goal programming-based worker scheduling model has been incorporated in the Mine Management Support System (MMSS) for assigning workers to prioritized jobs on a shift basis. In the model the accomplishment of each regular and non-regular job is a goal. The objective is minimization of the deviations away from the goals. A number of coefficients are used as premultipliers of the decision variables in order to address practical considerations associated with the utilization of workers and the requirements of jobs. Some of these premultipliers will be updated expertly within MMSS, timely updating the statuses of the dynamic parameters.

The Churchill Falls Development will eventually be the largest source of hydroelectric power in North America. Churchill Falls was discovered in 1839, but until recent years it was not practical to begin development of this site to tap the 7 million horsepower available. This $1 billion project is located in Labrador, 700 miles northeast of Montreal and 650 miles northwest of St. Johns, Nfld. The construction will divert the Churchill River 5 miles upstream from the 245 foot Churchill Falls. Rapids above and below the Falls, together with the Falls proper, give a natural head of 1,040 feet. In contrast to the basic simplicity of the surface installations, the powerhouse labyrinth is astounding in size and complexity. The largest in the world, it consists of three major chambers - the powerhouse, 972 feet long by 81 feet wide and 154 feet high; the surge chamber, 763 feet long, 40 feet to 64 feet wide and 148 feet high; and the transformer gallery, 856 feet long by 50 feet wide and 39 feet high. Other major features include eleven inclined penstocks, each 1200 feet long and 20 feet in finished diameter; eleven draft tubes averaging 37 feet in finished diameter and 162 feet long; six vertical cable shafts each an average of 865 feet in length; a series of eleven short bus tunnels linking the powerhouse and the transformer gallery; a vertical power-

CVRD was established on June 01, 1942, during the Second World War, through an agreement between Brazil, the United States and the United Kingdom, to produce 1.500.000 tons/year of iron ore from Itabira mines in the State of Minas Gerais. As a result of several circumstances and political problems (the end of the 2nd World War reduced the Anglo-American support to its development and implementation), the venture just reached the originally targeted production 10 years after its establishment, operating within a mine, railway and port integrated system. Currently, this operational system from the South of Brazil owns mines in the State of Minas Gerais with an annual capacity of approximately 65 million tons, 900 km of railways, of which more than 500 km is a double line railway, six pelletizing units and the Port of Tubarao for ships with large carrying capacity.

The raise bore method of shaft construction has been success-fully used in the mining and construction industries for over thirty years. In the mid 1990’s, Twentymile Coal Company (“TCC”), now affiliated with RAG American Coal Company, used this method for a moderately deep small diameter shaft and the raise bore and slash method for a shallow larger diameter shaft. In late 2001, TCC contracted to raise bore a 431-meter deep, 6.2-meter diameter shaft. During the raise bore and shaft lining processes, regional horizontal stress fields resulted in extensive elliptical caving beyond the original design diameter. This paper discusses the engineering approaches and procedures used to safely complete construction of the raise bore shaft.

"In our work, the preparation technique of high pure manganese sulfate directly from low-grade rhodochrosite ore (MnCO3) was studied and improved intensively, including the effective leaching process and the short purifying process. Based on the same ion effect, the repeated leaching of rhodochrosite with sulfuric acid is proposed to improve the solubility of Mn2+ and inhibit the dissolution of the impurities Ca2+ and Mg2+. Moreover, the repeated leaching process could make full use of rhodochrosite and lower the dosage of sulfuric acidas raw material. With the aid of theoretical calculation, Ba(OH)2 was chose to adjust the pH value of manganese sulfate solution, and BaF2 to remove Ca2+ and Mg2+completely in the process of purifying. The results demonstrate that the extraction ratio and the recovery ratio of manganese reached 94.3% and 92.7%, respectively, which shows the prospect of industrial application. In manganese sulfate production, the heavy metal impurities have been decreased to less than 1ppm. Moreover, the content of calcium, magnesium and sodium has been decreased to less than 20ppm, which meets the standards of high pure reagent for energy and electronic materials. Our study enlightens an approach to the sustainable application of low-grade rhodochrosite.Introduction Low-grade manganese carbonate ores (=14%) becomes gradually the main resources for exploitation and applications in China according to national mineral resources survey (Tan et al 2004 and Singh et al 2017). Therefore, the electrolytic deposition technique of rhodochrosite faces great challenges including low electrolysis efficiency, high-resource input and high-pollution discharge (Fu et al 2010, Michelis et al 2009, Zhang et al 2013). Recently, more and more amount of manganese series with high or super high purity such as MnSO4, MnO2, Mn3O4 and MnO is demanded with the development of energy and electronic materials. Due to low-grade ores containing multiple elements such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium, conventional preparation of manganese sulphate with high purity from electrolytic product is characterized by long production-cycle and high-energy consumption (Subrat et al 2011, Mpho et al 2013). By contrast, hydrometallurgical method combined with thermal decomposition, hydrothermal synthesis and sol-gel processes has been widely studied because of its high efficiency, low consumption and low cost (Chen et al 2008). But the key problem in direct preparation of manganese series form low-grade rhodochrosite is to remove completely the multiple impurities such as iron, silicon, calcium and magnesium (Liu et al 2014). So it is urgent to develop a sustainable alternative approach with character of short process, high efficiency and environmental friendly."

Longwall mining operations continue to increase extraction rates and the potential to generate higher amounts of airborne respirable dust (ARD). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has gathered data from underground longwall surveys and laboratory crushing tests to identify the important factors influencing the amount of ARD levels generated. Coal-seam characteristics, operational parameters (i.e.,cut sequence, mining height, etc.), extraction rates and dust-control parameters (i.e., airflow, water flow, etc.) were examined to determine their influence on ARD levels measured at longwalls during actual mining operations. ARD generated by a laboratory crusher while crushing bituminous coal samples collected from underground longwalls was also examined to determine if there were cor relations with coal-seam properties. Results from the longwall and laboratory data collected indicated that low-ash, high-volatile coals (low moist fuel ratio or MFR coals) generate higher amounts of ARD. It was found that face ventilation and water application to the coal product are essential elements to controlling longwall ARD levels.

A United Nations (UN) administered degasification technology transfer project, funded by the Global Environmental Fund (GEF) is underway at the Shihao Mine of the Songzao Coal Mining Ad- ministration in the province of Sichuan, Peoples Republic of China. This mine exploits multiple seams at depths ranging from 300 to 600 m below surface. In-seam boreholes and frequently spaced in-mine vertical boreholes, developed from underlying galleries constructed specifically for this purpose, currently degasify the seams in advance of mining at the Shihao Mine. Because of ventilation system constraints and the in-situ gas con- tent, longwall mining of the coals at this mine could not proceed without some form of pre-mining degasification. This paper presents a simulation based degasification plan of long, in-seam horizontal boreholes for the Shihao Mine. Simulations with a coalbed reservoir program assessed time dependent degasification characteristics of both vertical and in-seam horizontal boreholes. The simulations used input data from reservoir and desorption tests conducted at the mine site. The results produced system design nomograms to assist mine engineers in defining the appropriate borehole spacing necessary to degasify the seam in the time available for pre-mining drainage. The predicted effectiveness of the current vertical degasification scheme was compared with that for a horizontal borehole program and served as the basis for the recommended in-seam borehole configuration for the project at the Shihao Mine. The horizontal borehole degasification program requires substantially less gallery and borehole development than the present vertical degasification scheme.

The Mineral Park Mine is an open pit copper-molybdenum mine located in northwestern Arizona, approximately twenty miles northwest of Kingman, Arizona. The concentrating facility has been regarded, with the expansion in 2011, as a plant capable of treating fifty thousand short tons of feed per day for the mixture of supergene and hypogene ores available. The grinding circuit consists of two 32? x 14? SAG mills and four 20? x 28? ball mills. As ores became harder with greater depth in the adjacent pit areas, however, the SAG mills became severely throughput limited. The traditional treatment for similar properties is the installation of a recycle pebble crushing circuit. Because the cost of such an installation is quite elevated, and preliminary testing and research was inconclusive regarding the predicted throughput increases, management and technical personnel set out to find another solution to the problem. The result entailed a redesign of SAG lifters/liners and a nearly unique circuit change which was, at best, a difficult step that defied current grinding logic. This paper describes these changes, events leading up to them, and the results.

Risk assessment is a primary factor in the decision to mine some near surface orebodies, such as limestone, by either surface or underground methods. Identification and quantification of risks demonstrate that environmental concerns are greater for surface operations than underground, and may include such factors as runoff, spoil piles, aesthetics, dust, and large site reclamation. Risk assessment also includes local public feeling towards surface and underground operations while considering the balance between environmental impacts and the economic effects of mining on the local community. A complete understanding of the risks involved permits a comprehensive and accurate comparison between the two mining alternatives.

From the massive equipment that moves the earth, to the parts that keep the equipment moving, it was all on display for more than 35,000 people who at-tended MinExpo 2008 at the Las Vegas Convention Center Sept. 22-24. In the largest show in the illustrious history of MinExpo, the success of the recent commodity boom was reflected in the more than 55,700 hm2 (600,000 sq ft) of floor space that was jam-packed with nearly 1,300 vendors. Among them, the makers of the industry?s largest machines, displaying their latest and greatest trucks, shovels, excavators, drills and other mining equipment. During the nearly decade-long commodities boom, equipment makers have worked hard to keep up with demand while also investing heavily in research and development. The beneficiaries of this R&D is the end user who saw first-hand at MinExpo 2008 the many advances that have already been made in safety, comfort and productivity from all the manufacturers. R&D has also helped spark more talk of automation, which is being used already at some of the world?s largest mines. Caterpillar and Komatsu have worked with the technology in surface mining and Bucyrus and Sandvik are among the industry leaders applying the science of automation to underground mines. Technology has in-creased greatly since the idea of moving massive equipment remotely was first knocked around and the idea of entire fleets operating around the clock seems to be getting closer to reality. But, until that happens, MinExpo attendees were treated to a show that featured some of the most impressive current machines the industry has to offer. In the largest booth space of the convention, Caterpillar (www.cat.com) displayed the culmination of an ambitious $280-million dollar investment, with the introduction of its new mining fleet of four new trucks. The F-series was un-veiled with common features in safety, cabs, engines, frames and bodies and Tier 2 compliant engines. The F series also features a return to the electric drive option. ?When our customers asked us for improvements to our mining trucks, we responded by making a record investment in every single truck in our line, as well as the increased capacity to produce more of them,? said Cater-pillar group president Stu Levenick. ?New technologies have allowed us to make trucks more reliable, easier to maintain and more friendly to the operator and to the environment.? The 793-series is in the 218- to 227-t (240- to 250-st) class that will be available in both mechanical (793F) and electric (793F ac) versions. The electric drive-only 313- t (345-st) 795F was also introduced, while the flagship 797B truck is in the process of being replaced by the new 797F mechanical drive, maintaining its 345- to 363-t (380- to 400-st) target payload. Completing Caterpillar?s new mining truck line will be new versions of the 785 and 789 mechanical drive trucks. The next generation of trucks will be phased into production during the next two years, with the Cat ac drive models expected to go into production in late 2010. On Aug. 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the city of Richmond, VA. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This article describes the fast track design, bidding and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft-sinking methods and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, VA with up to 305 mm (12 in.) of rain that, in some areas, caused widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed and caused local combined sewer and stormwater flooding. The collapsed sewer was a 2.4-m x 76-mm (8-ft- x 3-in.-) wide by 2.7-m- x 152-mm- (9-ft- x 6 in.-) high arch sewer that was constructed in the 1920s and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to cur-rent elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately 18 m (60 ft ) deep and 31 m (100 ft) in diameter. This caused the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage, contaminated floodwaters reached depths in low-lying areas in excess of 8 m (25 ft).

At first glance the staid Joralemon background does not seem to equate with the life of adventure that irresistibly called me for over 70 years. But my ancestors had their adventures too. My father's family were Dutch Reformed Protestants who had energy or daring enough to come to America to escape the Catholic persecution that followed the Massacre of St. Bartholemew. The first Joralemon came from Friesland to New Amsterdam m 1636, just after Peter Stuyvesant. My father's mother's family, the Berdans, were French Huguenots who came to northern New Jersey only a little later to escape the Catholic domination in France. Some say that the first Berdan to come to America was given all the land between the Passaic and the Hacken-sack Rivers by King James. Whatever, the Berdan family settled there and was able to make a scanty living by farming and selling their produce in Manhattan. The spirit of adventure in my mother's family was just as tenuous. Gamaliel Beaman was pastor of a shipload of Puritans who came to Massachusetts in 1636. Gamaliel's descendents were peaceful farmers and some ministers in New England and later New York State. They had got all of the adventure out of their systems in the long and dangerous voyage across the Atlantic to escape religious persecution. The Joralemons and the Berdans married into families that had been in America almost as long as they had. On my father's side the Berdans, Doremus, DeGreys, Vanderbeeks, and Varicks showed by their names their Dutch or French Huguenot stock. The only one who achieved any fame was Peter Varick, who was George Washington's military secretary during the American Revolution. After this he was nine times mayor of New York and was one of the founders of Kings College, later Columbia University. He was responsible for one of my few ancestral claims to distinction. The review sheds light on recent trends suggested for solving problems associated with separation of different impurities from phosphates. Applications of recently modified flowsheets as well as new reagents in the flotation of phosphate ores of sedimentary origin are highlighted.

Factory beet molasses media were used as cheap sources of sucrose for microbial leaching of Greek nickeliferrous laterites using strains of Penicillium and Aspergillus sp. Nickel recoveries of up to 62% and cobalt recoveries of up to 50% were obtained by leaching in a two-phase system in which bioacids were produced by fungal metabolism in molasses ferrocyanide pretreated media. The addition of potassium ferrocyanide to the molasses substrates prior to leaching was found to have a beneficial effect by increasing the level of citric acid bioproduction, thus improving the leaching efficiency of the fermentation liquid. The metals known to interfere with citric acid production (i.e., Fe, Cu, Ca and Mn) were those most efficiently precipitated. Considering the much lower commercial price of molasses in the industrial market compared to sucrose and glucose carbohydrate media, molasses could prove to be a promising alternative, despite the cost of the required pretreatment.

The Andritz Ruthner Inc. hyperbaric filter was evaluated at a pilot scale for dewatering fine coal cleaned by froth flotation. The pilot scale dewatering testing was conducted at a solid feed rate ranging from 100 lbs to 200 lbs/hr-ft2. Effect of hyperbaric operating parameters and addition of various surfactants and flocculants were evaluated on dewatering of fine coal. The tests data indicated that for the minus 100 mesh and minus 28 mesh clean coal product, the Andritz hyperbaric unit provided filter cake containing 23 percent and 14 percent moisture, respectively.

The behavior of As bioleaching using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) in mine tailings containing highly concentrated As contents (i.e., As=33877 mg/kg) was systematically evaluated according to the changes in temperature (25?40°C, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8), pulp density (0.5?4%, temp=30°C, pH=1.8), and initial pH(1.8?2.2, temp=30°C, pulp density=0.5%). The changes in temperature and pulp density affected the As leaching behavior more than the change in initial pH did. Based on the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) results, the As leaching was attributed to solution acidification. In particular, As leaching was accelerated with increasing sulfate production in the reacting solution. After bioleaching, surface of tailings examined that many pores which dissolved As were formed by a chemical reaction due to bacteria. The As bioleaching efficiency by A. thiooxidans was enhanced by the oxidation of both the added elemental sulfur and the sulfur compounds in the mine tailings. The As bioleaching efficiency was maximized at 50.5% under conditions of an initial pH of 2.2, reaction temperature of 30°C, and pulp density of 0.5%.

"INTRODUCTION The expansion of the Suez Canal, which runs between the Mediterranean and Red Sea, is at the top of Egypt’s economic agenda. The £8 billion development plan includes a new channel alongside the existing one which will double the number of ships able to pass each day and several tunnels to connect the Sinai peninsula to the main part of Egypt. The Egyptian government ordered three new tunnels under the Suez Canal in the area of Port Said as part of the Canal Region Development Plan. The three tunnels will contribute to the North Sinai expansion, helping to create a vast industrial zone and completing the coastal road extension from Rafah to Nuewiba. Two of these three tunnels will be allocated for roads and the third for railway traffic. A further part of the Suez Canal development mega project are an additional six tunnels in the area of Ismailia and Suez. The focus of this paper is on the two road tunnels in Port Said and will give an overview of the project and the challenges encountered regarding the technical complexity and tight time schedule both in its design and execution. PROJECT OVERVIEW The tunnels will be built in the area of Port Said (see Figure 1) which is the most northern part of the Suez Canal.The road alignment connects the Port Fuad Road in the east bank of the Suez Canal to the Port Said-Ismailia highway in the west bank with a dual carriageway section. Each of the carriageways has two lanes. The bored diameter of the 2.8 km long road tunnels is 13.050 m and will be driven with two Mix-Shield TBMs. The distance between the two tunnel axes is planned with 42.5 m (discussion about a reduction are ongoing). The width of the Suez Canal is around 340 m at upper level and around 170 m at the bottom. During the TBM drive, three main geological layers are expected. Below a depth of around 40 m in a very soft clay layer, a dense to silty sand layer is predicted. Within the sand layer another silty hard clay is expected in different depths with variable thickness. After finishing the excavation of the road tunnels, the same TBM will be used for the railway tunnel. The lowest points of the road tunnels will be located 59 m below the surface (tunnel invert to surface) and only 18 m of ground cover exists between the tunnel crown and the Suez Canal invert. Minimum ground cover over the tunnel crown is approximately nine meters at the tunnel portals."

Two major events highlight recent developments in US ore and coal ports: completion of the last series of modern taconite pellet transshipment facilities on the Great Lakes; and modernization and construction of coal ports, particularly on the East and Gulf Coasts. The New Taconite Transportation System To reduce raw material transportation costs, a fleet of new generation high-capacity 304-m (1,000-ft) self-unloading vessels were built to carry iron ore pellets from the Minnesota-Michigan iron ranges to the steel plants on the lower Great Lakes. Existing port facilities had to be modernized, revised, or completely rebuilt to accommodate these large vessels. Some of these were Burlington Northern's Allouez, WI, loading dock; Duluth, Missabe & Iron Range Railway Co.'s Two Harbors, MN, facility; Republic Steel's Lorain, OH, facility; and Chessie's Toledo, OH, dock. Allouez and Two Harbors receive taconite pellets from unit trains and load them onto large vessels either after dumping or via a large stockpile and reclaim system. The Lorain facility receives iron ore pellets from self-unloading vessels' discharge boom conveyor and reloads the pellets into rail cars or small vessels destined to inland steel mills. The Toledo facility receives Armco pellets from vessels, stockpiles them through the winter, and reloads into unit trains destined for Armco's mills along Chessie's rail tracks. Burlington Northern's $75-million Allouez pellet dock, completed in June 1977, was built to receive pellets produced by Hibbing Taconite Co. and National Pellet Plant in Minnesota, stockpile them through the winter when the lakes are frozen, and load them into 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels in the shipping season. As much as 10 Mt (11 million st) of pellets may be stockpiled within the loop track. A 6-km (4-mile) long conveyor system connects the stockpile area and the dock. Thirty-six new concrete silos were built on the dock to house 2 kt (2,000 st) each of pellets before shiploading. The $35.5-million expansion of the Two Harbors transshipment facilities began shiploading in July 1978 after ground breaking in Aug. 1974. Particularly noteworthy is the first application of the Orboom system-a breakthrough in technology for the modernization of the century-old pocket docks on the Great Lakes to accommodate the new generation of super vessels. The pocket-type loading dock has been a standard on the lakes for nearly a hundred years. Bottom-dump rail cars fill the ore pockets on top of a finger pier. Gravity chutes matching standardized ore ship hatch spacings are lowered to fill the holds of a 20.3-kt (20,000-dwt) ship. The construction is simple and the loading swift. In spite of advances in technology elsewhere, most of these docks continue to serve the iron ore and coal trade in the same manner they did in the 19th century. Although performance of the pocket docks on small vessels remains outstanding, the new 304-m (1,000-ft) vessels are beyond the reach of the old docks. After extensive development, the Orboom system (Patent No. 4,065,002) for pocket docks was successfully developed. The heart of the Orboom system is the retractable shuttle loading arm which loads the wide beam vessels. The Orboom shuttles are fed by existing pockets of the dock that, in turn, are charged by a tripper conveyor along the length of the dock. The Two Harbors shiploading system is supported by a 0.9 Mt (1 million st) storage-reclaim network. Unit trains are bottom dumped. The Bureau of Mines evaluated the integrity of escapeways in a three entry underground coal mine. A center conveyor belt entry (secondary escapeway), was flanked by an intake (primary escapeway) and a return entry. Diesel equipment was used throughout the mine for material and personnel haulage. A carbon monoxide monitoring system, tied to a data recording computer on the surface, was deployed throughout the belt entry and at selected sites in the intake and return entries. Previously, the company had a fire of unknown origin in another mine, which prompted an interest in the performance of their escapeways. An initial, qua1itative evaluation was performed by burning approximately 14 kg of coal at the mouth of the intake entry. The first test was followed by a similar burn at the mouth of the belt entry. These initial trials showed a high quantity of leakage between entries. In several follow-up evaluations, simulated fires, using a tracer gas, were set in the intake and belt entries. Tracer gas concentrations were obtained in all entries at four different underground locations. The results of these tests showed that permanent stoppings could not guarantee isolated, contaminant-free escapeways.

"The McCook Main Tunnel system consists of a 10-m (33-ft) finished diameter, 490-m (1,600-ft) long, hard rock tunnel constructed from a 27.5-m (90- ft) diameter and 92-m (300-ft) deep main gate and tunnel construction access shaft. The gate shaft houses six, high-head 4.4 m by 9 m (14.5 ft by 29.5 ft) wheel gates to be installed in the bifurcated and steellined section of the tunnel. The tunnel also includes portal and energy dissipation structures as it daylights into the reservoir.The construction of the tunnel system has been divided into two contracts. The gate and construction access shaft was completed in August 2011. The tunnel excavation and concrete and steel lining was completed in September 2014. The remaining and undergoing construction include the tunnel connections to the reservoir and the Mainstream Tunnel and installation of gates and hydraulic cylinders. This article focuses on the live connection of the McCook Main Tunnel to the Mainstream Tunnel that was initiated in November 2014 and will continue through the seasonal drier weather conditions in Chicago approximately from October through April. Chicago TARP systemThe MWRD has been addressing combined sewer overflows (CSO) and flooding in Chicagoland since the late 1960s and formally adopted the tunnel and reservoir plan in 1972 to protect the region’s most precious drinking water supply, Lake Michigan. Phase I of TARP, which included construction of 175 km (109 miles) of deep storage and conveyance tunnels with diameters up to 10 m (33 ft), was completed in 2006. In addition to protection of Lake Michigan from CSO discharges, Phase I resulted in substantial improvements in surface water quality as well as the quality of life for lake and riverfront communities in Chicago. Water quality improvements and flooding mitigation will be further enhanced as Phase II reservoirs are placed in service, including the three large reservoir systems, McCook, Thornton and Majewski (Fig. 1).The McCook Reservoir is the largest reservoir in the TARP system. Once completed, this $700-million reservoir facility will receive 38 billion L (10 billion gal) of CSO and flood water via the McCook Main Tunnel, which connects the TARP Mainstream Tunnel to the McCook Reservoir, and from distribution and Des Plaines inflow tunnels which will bring flow from the Des Plaines Tunnel of TARP."
