The 1980s marked a boom in gold mining and exploration in the United States particularly in the state of Nevada which lifted this country to second place in the world, after South Africa, in gold production. With this boom came many positive aspects such as increased employment, increased investment, increased payment of federal and local taxes, higher purchases of goods and services and higher expenditures on social and economic uplift programs. With the arrival of Minera Yanacocha in Peru in 1992, the gold mining boom shifted to this country which has lifted Peru to first place in Latin America in 1996 and ninth place in the world in gold production. As in the case of the United States in the 1980s, similar positive impacts are being felt throughout Peru in the 1990s.

The hydrophobic character of sapphire surfaces in SDS solutions was examined with respect to the aggregative nature of the adsorbed surfactant phase. It was found that, at equilibrium, sapphire surfaces having adsorbed SDS bi-layers exhibited no contact angle. Conversely, when the adsorbed SDS was found to be mi-cellar in nature, sapphire surfaces developed significant hydrophobic character. The surface states as detected by Fr -IRIIRS conformational analysis were found to be reversible with temperature. The variation in adsorption density with temperature was studied by in situ Fr-IRIIRS. The isosteric heat of adsorption was calculated to be -1.6 kcal/mole. Although the adsorbed SDS was found to undergo a reversible phase change between 25 and 32°C, similar to SDS in solution, the extent of adsorption was not reversible with temperature.

Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances due to ore changes and equipment malfunctions. One of the challenges faced by the operators is the detection of a disturbance, the identification of its origin and of the action to correct the problem. Hydrocyclones overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes of the units of a nest, surging and internal liner detachment may cause a loss of classification capacity and quality leading to a less efficient grinding operation. A dynamic simulator is used to assess rules for the diagnosis of hydrocyclone faults from the trends produced by sensors.

Since 1950, rotary-drilled, large-diameter holes, "big holes", with depths to over 300 feet and diameters of over 30 inches have become numerous and widespread. Fifty such holes have been drilled for access shafts to LPG mined caverns, Over 70 holes have been drilled for various other commercial activities. Over 150 holes have been drilled by the AEC for atomic testing purposes. These holes have ranged up to 300-inch diameters with 1600-foot depths, 120-inch diameters with 570-foot depths, and 72-inch diameters with 4800-foot depths. Equipment is now available to drill a wide range of ?big holes? for varied requirements. At least a dozen drilling contractors are participating or have participated in the drilling of "big holes". The accompanying tables show pertinent historical, technical and economic data on over 250 holes. The illustrations to be presented concurrently with this paper show the various equipment and accessories now in use. (See Appendix I for captions of illustrations.)

Epithermal gold deposits occur in and near the marginal fault that circumscribes the Goldfield, Nevada, Tertiary caldera. The gold occurs disseminated in alunite, pyrite, and kaolin- bearing silicified zones that are controlled by the circular faults. Other Tertiary calderas (i.e., Summitville and Red Mountain No. 3) have epithermal disseminated gold deposits located in and near their marginal circular faults in settings that resemble the Goldfield example. These additional caldera- controlled epithermal gold deposits are also characterized by alunite, pyrite, and kaolin-bearing silicified rock that act as hosts for the gold disseminations. The Goldfield District is therefore an exploration model for those seeking disseminated epithermal gold deposits in a caldera setting.

"The US coal mining industry has suffered a recent decline in profits caused by a combination of decline in commodity demand and more restrictive government regulation, forcing coal mining companies to cease production in numerous mines. A 40% decrease in the total number of coal mines occurred from 1994 to 2000. The number of mines remained relatively constant until 2008 when a change of government sparked a series of new environmental regulations which have contributed to another 15% decrease from 2008 to 2016. In contrast, production has only decreased by 3%, increasing from 1994 to 2008, and then decreasing since 2008. However, this value is skewed by large increases in sub-bituminous coal production and decreases in other coal ranks. Several aspects assist in executive decisions on mine longevity and economic worth. Studies of open source mine data collected by mandated government surveys coupled with commodity history can be used to find relationships between mine closures and these elements, which include statistics on production tonnage, seam height, coal rank, etc. This paper looks at coal mining trends since 1994 by comparing mine, market, and regulation factors that may influence mine closure. INTRODUCTION The US coal mining industry is currently experiencing a decline in both demand and commodity price while facing implementation of more stringent air and water pollution regulations. Company profits have decreased significantly, forcing several major companies to declare bankruptcy. The industry was required to adapt to survive. Many of these companies have adjusted by abandoning mines; the last two decades have seen a drastic decrease in the number of mines. To discover the primary causes of this downturn, three major aspects must be studied: properties of abandoned mines, commodity history, and regulatory impact. TRENDS SINCE 1994 Each year, US coal mines are required to submit data on a wide variety of categories to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the US Energy Information Administration (EIA). This data includes administrative records, production values, and information regarding the attributes of the mined material and the mine itself. Each year since 1996, EIA has released a report summarizing the data from two years prior. Additionally, MSHA maintains a database containing a collection of all the most current data. These resources are the primary sources for the following figures."

Long term production planning in open pit mines requires the determination of cutoff grade, mining and milling production rates, mining sequence, mine life, and ultimate pit limits. These variables interact in a circular fashion, that is, the value of a variable can not be determined without the knowledge of the value of the preceding variable in the circle. Therefore, a genuine solution to the problem necessitates simultaneous determination of the variables. Such a solution methodology, comprised of a group of heuristic algorithms and an unconventional dynamic programming algorithm, is described in this paper. The methodology is applied to a small size Western US gold deposit to illustrate its logic and capabilities.

The Climax Molybdenum Mine, located near Leadville, Colorado, is the site of a lengthy mining history spanning more than 80 years. In the 1960’s, extraction of molybdenum from oxide ore located adjacent to the massive molybdenite sulfide deposit resulted in the construction of an earthen core dam to impound fine-grained oxide tailing in the Eagle River Valley. Through recognized value of water storage and reclamation opportunities, a tailing removal project was initiated in 1993 to convert the impoundment facilities to a post-mining beneficial land use of developed water resources. An evaluation of the effect residual materials and lake dynamics would have on in-stream water quality was performed. Eagle Park Reservoir stands as a model for future reclamation efforts that involve water delivery to highly sensitive receiving waters. This paper provides a case study on project development, the evolution of water quality assessment, and the regulatory framework that contributed to this project’s success.

Silver bearing bulk sulfide concentrates from several Peruvian mines were autoclaved in a 19 liter (five gallon) laboratory autoclave in Lima, Peru. Cyanidation of autoclaved concentrates following a hot lime jarosite destruction step extracted over 98 percent of the silver and over 95 percent of the gold. Autoclave operating parameters such as time, temperature, pulp density and autoclaved solids recycle were investigated and reaction rates determined. The problems of excessive heat generation, silver solubility during autoclaving, and formation of pellets containing unreacted sulfides were addressed. The data presented will be used to design a continuous autoclave pilot plant to pro-vide reliable scale up data for a 50 -100 ton per day facility.

Spatial and temporal temperature variations in a high-level radioactive waste repository drift can give rise to moisture transport within the drift. Knowledge of this moisture transport may be important to assessing the potential for corrosion of all metallic components in the drift. The model presented here shows one approach to simulating evaporation, transport, and condensation of water in large underground openings using a framework based on computational fluid dynamics. Simulation results that explicitly model water and latent heat transport are presented.

"More than 6,300 people attended SME’s 2016 Annual Conference & Expo in Phoenix, AZ and many of them made the trip to the conference to take part in the excellent technical sessions that are presented on a yearly basis by the Society.Holding true to form, this year’s conference was full of options. In fact, this year there were 121 technical sessions and 751 presentations to chose from. The following is a sample of some of the technical sessions as seen through the eyes of the editors of Mining Engineering and SME technical papers.SME Sections Sharing Success: Changing thePublic Perception of MiningThis session was a workshop on how several local sections were effective in getting the message out to their communities and schools about the value of the extractive minerals industry. Several sections shared their outreach successes, including the Mining in Society merit badge activities by the Minnesota Section by Julie Lucas and SME’s participation in the World Scout Jamboree in Japan by Frank McAllister.Dan Alexander highlighted activities by the Pittsburgh Section, such as preparing minerals kits and pamphlets for elementary school classes and regional science fairs. The West Virginia University Student Chapter used the kits as handouts at their local gem and mineral show. School speakers in full mining gear were especially interesting to the young children.Other speakers were Michael Linn, Paradise Valley Unified School District — Business and School Partnerships; and Greg Kruse, Central Wyoming Section of SME — What makes a successful section?Engineering Competency ModelAmerican Association of Engineering Societies and the U.S. Department of Labor, with a grant from the United Engineering Foundation, developed a guide to the set of skills necessary for success in the engineering community -- Knowledge – Skills – Abilities — needed for all disciplines.Various engineering societies are now writing the Tier 5 occupation-specific requirements. To successfully bid a tunneling contract by machine, a contractor must have a reliable estimate of expected penetration rates and cutter costs. Preferably, these predictions should be independent of those supplied by machine and cutter manufacturers. Therefore, a series of rock index tests have been developed and incorporated in routine Rock Mechanics testing for the purpose of predicting rock boreability. Index properties were evaluated empirically by using rock samples and pertinent construction records from recently machined tunnels. Samples were taken from the completed tunnel walls, tested parallel to machine penetration, and results were compared to localized rates of penetration. Indices are based on two measures of rebound hardness and two measures of abrasive properties. The Shore (C-2 type) Scleroscope and Schmidt (L-type) Hammer were utilized to measure rebound hardness and a Taber Abraser was modified to measure rock abrasiveness and abradeability. Results indicate that rock hardness index properties investigated in this study can be used successfully to predict TBM penetration rates.

INTRODUCTION High in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, some 50 airline miles (80 km) northeast of Fresno, and near the John Muir Wilderness and Kings Canyon National Park, a large underground hydroelectric project is under construction. Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) Company's 1,125 MW Helms Pumped Storage Project exhibits a number of impressive statistics, unusual features, and other characteristics of interest to the tunneling or power plant designer and construction contractor. The most significant underground facilities include almost 20,000 ft (6,096 m) of 27-ft (8.2 m) diam concrete-lined pressure tunnel; 3,700 ft (1,128 m) of access tunnel; 1,600 ft (488 m) of steel-lined high-pressure conduit, 2 major underground chambers more than 1,000 ft (305 m) below ground; 3 deep vertical shafts, and one steep inclined shaft. Maximum static pressures within the conduits range from 200 ft (61 m) to 1,744 ft (532 m), with hydraulic transients that increase pressure to 2,500 ft (762 m). The purpose of these underground works is to provide 475,000 hp (354,350 KW) of water power to each of the 3 reversible pump-turbines, each connected to a 375 MW generator motor. The units, rated at 1,744 ft (532 m) maximum static head, are among the world's front-runners, considering the size-head combination. The Helms Project develops the existing power drop between two of PG&E's reservoirs, Courtright Lake and Lake Wishon. These reservoirs are retained by two concrete-faced rockfill dams completed in 1958, each storing approximately 125,000 acre ft (154 x 106 m3) of water. "With desert temperatures climbing high at Caterpillar’s Tinaja Hills Demonstration and Learning Center near Tucson, AZ in September, a group of editors were given a reprieve from the sun and stepped inside the new Cat Minestar Command Center. The movie theater-like temperatures inside were a welcome relief, and the computer screens stationed around the room were an indication of not just how much things have evolved in the mining equipment sector, but also a peek into the future of where mining is headed.Equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar have always had to deal with peaks and valleys in demand that come with mining, perhaps never more so than in the last five years. Sudhanshu Singh, global product manager for Caterpillar, said that in one month in 2012, at the height of the mining Super Cycle, Caterpillar produced more than 150 large mining trucks (haul trucks that carry 136 t/150 st or more). By contrast, Caterpillar produced about 80 of those trucks in the full year of 2016. Between 2012 and 2016, Caterpillar saw its profits drop by 40 percent.“This shows how cyclical the industry is, and it is a testament to the strength of Caterpillar to be able to tolerate the wide swings,” said Singh. Demand for commodities is once again on the rise as are commodity prices with many signs pointing toward a recovery for the mining sector, and Caterpillar has positioned itself for the recovery. During its 2017 press event in September, company officials emphasized that Caterpillar has added strength in its technology divisions by forming new partnerships and adjusting its operating plan.“At the heart of our enterprise strategy is the operating & execution (O&E) model, a strategic framework to identify areas of the business that either create or consume the most value,” said Caterpillar chief executive officer, Jim Umpleby. “Using the O&E model as a guide, we gain a deeper understanding of where we have a competitive advantage, which is key to generating high returns.”"

A description will be given of an approach to plant process automation based on the strategy of first developing an information system followed by later development of process models. The advantages of this approach over the unit process control will be outlined. Some insight will be given into the risks associated with this method. These risks can be shown to be primarily economic.' Some reference will be made to two Cominco installations in the interests of illustrating the generality of the information systems approach.

Introduction Coal is the US's largest indigenous fossil fuel resource and is used to power 57% of this country's electrical generation (NCA, 1986). Congress, however, is focusing its attention on the acid rain issue and public sentiment is leaning toward further curtailments of SO2, NO, and particulates from utility and industrial coal-burning facilities. The Cool Water plant has proven that integrated-gasification-combined-cycle (IGCC) technology can reliably produce economical electrical power while limiting SO2, NOx, and particulates to a rate of only one-tenth of the federal New Source Performance Standards for coal-fired plants. Process water requirements at Cool Water are 40% less than those of a conventional coal-fired utility plant equipped with flue-gas desulfurization units for stack gas scrubbing, thus reducing waste water treatment requirements (Clark and Shorter, 1985). The IGCC technology employed at Cool Water has now been demonstrated to efficiently convert coal to electricity in an environmentally superior fashion. The Cool Water Coal Gasification Program is an unincorporated California association of six partners whose commitment is proving that the integration of gasification with combined cycle power production (IGCC) is commercially viable and environmentally safe. The 120 MW Cool Water plant began commercial production on June 24, 1984. The Program is operating it for a five-year commercial demonstration period. In this paper, we show that the methane emission and the dust generation in under-ground mining currently and in the future pose operational, health and safety conditions which adversely Impact face productivity and worker satisfaction. One solution is the use of a dual-aircourse system of ventilation. In this concept, one aircourse captures and exhausts to the surface the dust generated and the methane emitted in coal/mineral fragmentation while a second aircourse provides workers with cleaner air for breathing and comfort. Various dual-aircourse configurations adapted to the Variable Wall Miner are analyzed and compared with conventional mining in gassy seams, indicating a marked reduction in the required air quantity and the number of aircourses.

An accurate, efficient and stable computation of the mill matrix function (eAt) is needed where mill matrix (A) is a real general matrix. Two important modeling cases in comminution where such need arises are: Heterogeneous comminution behavior of multi-component ores and ultra-fine grinding involving simultaneous attrition and fragmentation breakages. This paper presents the application of a novel splitting method in conjunction With similarity transformation technique in the form of "product formula" which is found to work in all cases and uses a most aggravating, yet interesting property of the matrix exponential in a restricted sense. Results are presented showing that this method can yield solution as accurate as those obtained With an analytical technique. The utility of this computational approach is demonstrated by parameter estimation analysis using a distributed component model in the liberation area through computer simulations.

Taiwan is located in the orogenic belt of island arcs on the western rim of the Pacific Ocean. The structure of the Taiwan coal fields is much complicated as a result of active Cenozoic orogenic disturbance in Plio-Pleistocene time. The abundant faults and folds have created poor structural conditions of the coal seams and some peculiar safety problems in mining however, the domestic coal still played an important role in the economic development of Taiwan for the years before 1968. Because of increasing mining depth and a decreasing number of miners, the coal production dropped from nearly 5.1 million metric tons in 1968 to 2.45 million metric tons in 1981. There were 173 small active coal mines and about 22 thousand miners in 1981. The coal mining in Taiwan has a history of more than one century. Specific efforts have been undertaken in solving major coal mine safety problems such as gas outbursts, bad roofs and weak floors, difficulty in ventilation due to deep underground mining, spontaneous combustion etc. We have thus acquired much helpful experience which, we deem, is worth reporting at this meaningful meeting.

The complexity of large geographically diverse or multicommodity mining companies requires a corporate structure, which provides the maximum long-term effectiveness. Structure models exist along the spectrum of centralization to decentralization. This paper examines the trade-offs of flexibility, cost, decision making, consistent strategies, and corporate control associated with different structural models as applied to mining companies. The mining industry typically lends itself to a business unit model. However, the degree of decentralization depends on size, proximal operations, technical complexity, product mix, geographic spread, mining methods employed, and the inherent capabilities of an organization.
