The Federal Coal Management Program represents the culmination of several years of effort by the Department of the Interior (001) to reformulate the manner in which coal owned by the United States is leased and developed. These efforts began in 1970 with a study by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), which indicated that unless drastic changes were made in. the federal coal leasing procedures, federal coal lands would be leased almost for the asking while production of coal from those lands had been decreasing. Consequently, informal action was taken in 1971, which resulted in no further leasing being authorized until February, 1973. At that time, a formal moratorium on most coal leasing was established, with exceptions granted only for leases needed to satisfy short-term needs such as maintaining existing mines or supplying reserves for new contracts in the immediate future. This leasing policy embodied a long term objective of developing an entirely new planning system for federal coal leasing, as well as to schedule the preparation of a programmatic impact statement for this new system. As a result of the 1973 moratorium and the ensuing application of short-term criteria, only 10 federal coal leases (covering approximately 30,177 acres) were issued from February, 1973, through January l, 1976.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Granduc mine is situated on the west side of Granduc Mountain in the Leduc River area of north¬west British Columbia about 51 km (32 miles) north¬east of the town of Stewart. Entry is by means of a 16.6-km (10.3-mile) long haulage adit from the concentrator site at Tide Lake. The principal ore mineral is chalcopyrite. Ore mineralization varies from dis¬seminated to irregular semimassive stringers generally associated with highly folded and sheared biotite-rich sections of metasediments. The ore bodies vary in width from 3.6 m (12 ft) to over 18 m (60 ft) in a zone some 800 m (2600 ft) in length dipping at an average of 75° to the west and plunging steeply to the south. Capping varies in thickness from 0 to over 300 m (1000 ft). SELECTION OF MINING METHOD In the early stages of planning the primary require¬ments to be met by the mining method were: (1) suit¬ability to high output and productivity, (2) adaptability to mechanization in order to minimize operating costs, and (3) minimization of the costs and the development period for preproduction. Considering these, the selection of a mining method was narrowed to a choice be¬tween sublevel long-hole stoping or sublevel caving. A method utilizing backfill was ruled out as uneconomical, especially since mill tailings would not be readily available. At the time, the following facts about the ore body were recognized: (1) the average width of the ore body was 12 m (40 ft), (2) 30% of the stoping blocks were in areas of 6 m (20 ft) or less in width; (3) in many cases, ore zones were located in parallel lenses or were irregular in shape; (4) major faults were present in the hanging wall close to the ore, with minor faults within the different ore zones; and (5) the ore itself was lami¬nated with fractures and jointing crossing such bedding planes. Considering these factors, the two stoping meth¬ods were compared. Sublevel Open Stoping The characteristics of sublevel open stoping are: 1) It is generally not used for widths below 6 m (20 ft) since the ratio of waste development increases as level intervals are reduced to insure good control of long-hole drilling. 2) This method is used where ground is relatively competent. Otherwise more pillar support is required, increasing ore losses or mining costs with pillar recovery. 3) The method is not easily adaptable to parallel ore zones separated by relatively narrow waste bands. 4) Close control of pillar and stope design will per¬mit some degree of dilution control. Sublevel Caving Sublevel caving is characterized by the following: 1) The method can be used for a variety of ore widths, recognizing that 3 m (10 ft) in width may be an economical minimum. 2) It is particularly favorable where wall rock is weak. 3) The method has flexibility so that irregular ore bodies or parallel lenses can be mined. 4) The need to leave pillars for support is eliminated 5) Dilution and tonnage recovery are interrelated. With concern about the stability of the hanging wall and the geometry of the ore bodies, there was a growing favor to choose the sublevel caving method. However, this method was relatively new to Canadian mining practice. Teams were sent to Sweden to tour mines using sublevel caving and to study their methods and any extraction and dilution problems. The objective was to develop cost and performance data and ore recovery grades and tonnages for feasibility comparisons. Next, detailed mine plans were developed covering a three-year period using sublevel caving and sublevel open stoping. Extensive analyses of the development and production costs for each method were made. With sublevel caving, ore losses of 10% with a 20% dilution rate were used. The same ore loss was estimated for sublevel open stoping with dilution varying from 11 to 15%. As a result of these studies, the decision was made to use sublevel caving partly because slightly lower op¬erating costs, together with higher productivity, offset the adverse effects of higher dilution; and partly be¬cause, at the start, there would be less risk in being able to handle the ground, and the method offered more flexi¬bility. Open stoping was not ruled out for testing at a later date. It was recognized that some other method of mining would be required for mining the ore extensions below the glacier, where surface subsidence must be avoided. During the operating life of the mine, open stoping was tested in narrow width ore zones and found un¬satisfactory due to wall failure. A cut-and-fill stope, utilizing run-of-mine waste from development, was also operated on a trial basis. A sequence was finally estab¬lished that permitted ground control; however, produc¬tivity needed considerable improvement in order for open stoping to be considered as a sole alternative for mining below the main haulage level. At the termination of operations in June 1978 over 13 000 000 t (14,500,000 st) had been extracted from above the main haulage level at production rates varying from 3270 to 7250 t/d (4000 to 8000 stpd). Sublevel Caving Methods Two basic methods were used, transverse and longi¬tudinal. The transverse method was used mainly in the upper C ore body in widths greater than 18 m (60 ft), and occasionally as an alternative to the longitudinal method in localized areas where strike faulting inter¬fered with normal development. Although chlorine oxidation has been found to be effective in destroying the CN ion, an excess of chlorine is needed to drive the reaction to completion. This often results in the formation of residual chloramines, which are toxic to aquatic life and often regulated by various states. The interhalogen, bromine chloride (BrCl), has been found to be just as effective but without the formation of persistent, residual chloramines. The hydrolysis and subsequent disproportionation of the highly-polar BrCl molecule essentially yields a solution of hypobromous acid (HOBr) and nonoxidizing hydrochloric acid (HC1). Studies have been carried out to directly compare the mechanism of CN destruction with chlorine and bromine chloride.

This paper deals with problems of groundwater development in an insular circum-Pacific environment, and is not oriented as such to mining and mineral development. Nonetheless, because a reliable water supply is necessary for most mining and related support activities, and since water supplies are limited in many insular parts of the Pacific Basin, groundwater development is a subject which must be frequently addressed. Because many in the audience may be already familiar with groundwater development for continental environments, I have chosen to deal with groundwater occurrence and development problems which for the most part are unique to insular environments. In such environments, the local geology plays a critical role in determining groundwater occurrence and its suitability for development. The three examples discussed in this paper-Hawaii, Guam, and the Marshall Islands-were selected because they illustrate groundwater occurrence in a wide range of geologic conditions. For example, the Hawaiian aquifers consist primarily of basaltic lavas, while Guam is made up of andesitic lavas and coral reef limestones, and the Marshall Islands are coral atoll deposits. Despite differences in aquifer size and rock types, the principal mode of groundwater occurrence at the three sites is similar; thus, development strategies are also similar. Figure 1 shows the location of the three sites.

Banded siliceous manganese-iron bearing sediments recognized as distinctive facies of Algoma type iron-formation constitute low grade resources of manganese in many countries. Manganiferous facies associated with oxide and carbonate facies of iron-formation have iron to manganese ratios ranging from 0.2 to 2 and commonly about one. Manganiferous facies up to 30 meters thick occurring separately or with other iron-formation facies are associated with cherts, carbonates, shales, turbidites, tuffs and lavas. Primary cherty manganiferous facies and their gondite metamorphic equivalents represent significant manganese resources and are protores for higher grade deposits derived by secondary enrichment processes.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION The Climax mine is located 161 km (100 miles) southwest of Denver on Fremont Pass astride the Con¬tinental Divide. Climax employs 2800 people to pro¬duce 42 670 t/d (47,000 stpd) of molybdenum ore. The Storke level, the main underground level, produces 19 970 t/d (22,000 stpd); the 600 level, the lowest ac¬tive underground area, produces 7260 t/d (8000 stpd); and the open pit presently produces 15 430 t/d (17,000 stpd), Fig. 1. A panel caving method is possible because of the favorable geology and geometry of the Climax ore body. Geology The Climax deposit is composed of three separate ore bodies formed in a massive Tertiary stockwork which penetrates Precambrian granites and schists. The ore bodies are elliptical in plan with overall dimensions of 914 x 1219 m (3000 x 4000 ft). In section the ore bodies are arcuate with an overall height of 457 m (1500 ft), although the depth is not firmly ascertained. Ore grade decreases rapidly into a highly siliceous cen¬tral core and more gradually toward the outer bounda¬ries of the deposit. The mineralization is relatively continuous in the ore zone and contains few dilution-causing waste inclusions. Molybdenite is contained in pre-ore fractures which were largely recemented during the three mineralization pulses. Postore fractures, with a spacing of a few inches to several meters (feet), render the deposit amenable to caving when it is undercut. The peripheral rock caves similarly to the ore, but the central core is competent and is difficult to cave. Caving Feasibility Successful caving action requires an undercut area of approximately 122 by 122 m (400 by 400 ft). When the undercut area exceeds this minimum distance, the arching effect is lost, and the ore column collapses. Ore extensions from the main cave area less than 122 m (400 ft) wide usually cannot be caved. Waste or low¬grade areas within the deposit can be left if they are large enough to carry weight around openings passing through them. Experience indicates that these areas should be over 30 m (100 ft) in length and width. Smaller unprofitable units of waste, such as postore dikes, are mined to avoid weight problems and result in ore dilution. Successful caving and ore recovery are dependent upon timely ore removal from the undercut zone because columns of immobile ore inhibit caving and concentrate weight onto the underlying workings. Climax experience indicates that a finger (drawpoint) spacing* averaging 10.4 m (34 ft) yields an excellent caving action and a 92.5% ore recovery at the estimated grade. The Density Separator is basically a hindered settling classifier with automatic control features that provide steady, sharp classification irrespective of extreme variations in dry tons per hour of feed solids up to the design maximum throughput for the particular material being treated. The size and capacities of commercially available units and operating data comprise the scope of the paper. Applications of the unit for other than classification are proposed, i.e. washing and desliming.

Significant resources grading less than about 1 % nickel occur in magmatic sulfide deposits of two types. In the Mt. Keith type, extensive zones of disseminated nickel sulfides occur in the central portions of certain synvolcanic dunite-peridotite sills of komatiitic affinity in Archean greens tone terranes. In the Duluth type, disseminated copper-nickel sulfides occur near the basal margins of intrusions of flood basaltic affinity associated with intracontinental rifting. In both types, the parent magmas became saturated with sulfide following the onset of fractional crystallization and the separation of the immiscible sulfide melt was accompanied by the precipitation of a relatively large proportion of silicates. The abundant silicate crystals impeded the coalescense and accumulation of the sulfide droplets with the resulting formation of large but low grade deposits.

INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series dealing with mining methods and costs, prepared and published under the sponsorship of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and made possible through the cooperation of many mining companies in the US and foreign countries. The data presented have been obtained from papers previously published by the Bureau dealing with indi¬vidual mines, from the technical press, and from infor¬mation furnished by the mining companies. DEFINITIONS Top Slicing The term top slicing is commonly applied to that method of mining in which the ore is extracted by a series of timbered slices, beginning at the capping; the slice is caved, bringing down the capping to the floor of the slice; the succeeding lower slices are mined up to the overlying mat or gob, consisting of an accumulation of timber from the upper slices and broken capping, which follows the mining progressively downward (Fig. 1). The term has also come to be applied to the mining of ore bodies only one slice thick, by a series of tim¬bered slices one beside the other. The timbers are blasted out, bringing the capping down to the floor, suc¬ceeding slices being driven alongside those already caved (Fig. 2). In USBM classifications of mining methods, top slic¬ing has been placed under the heading caved stopes. The method differs fundamentally, however, from the cav¬ing methods of mining in which the breaking of the ore itself is accomplished by caving action induced by undercutting. In top slicing the ore is broken by the ordinary methods of drilling and blasting, and only the capping is broken up by caving. Main Levels or Haulage Levels Main or haulage levels are the main extraction levels on which the ore is hauled to the shaft. These levels and the shaft constitute the preliminary development of the mine.

Introduction Mine sampling determines the practicality of any mining operation. Improper sampling can result in an incorrect appraisal of present production and future potential. Therefore, the mine department in charge of ore-reserve calculations and mine sampling should be overseen by competent and experienced professionals with technical backgrounds qualifying them to produce accurate results. Sampling is a process by which portions of an ore body are collected and analyzed to estimate the average mineral content of the entire ore body. It is incorrect to assume that a large number of samples eliminates any errors in the sampling method. To obtain unbiased samples, proper sample location with respect to rock type and mineralization is just as important. The sampling procedure must yield correct results for the type of mineral deposit, and careful consideration should be given to whether or not the sampling technique has been developed to an extent sufficient to eliminate as much human error and bias as possible. Only after the ore has been mined and milled is the sampling accuracy known. Sampling also provides information about the bulk composition of the ore for mineralogical and metallurgical tests that determine the economic ore-waste boundaries and the geologic trends for exploration. Actual mining plans can be developed from this information to maximize profits. Accurate sampling is critical, and thus must be approached in a scientific manner. Sampling Techniques Sampling practices and techniques are as varied as the mines in which they are used. The method(s) chosen must be tailored to suit the company and mining needs. For instance, tabular uranium deposits, vein gold deposits, and porphyry copper deposits pose special problems in conducting unbiased sampling. The mine geologist or engineer in charge must develop a sampling method, test it in a sample area, and then critically evaluate the results. If the results from the test area are accurate within the economic limits established by the company, they then may be adopted for general use in the mine. Four routine sampling methods are suitable for specific sampling objectives in the daily mine routine: (1) channel sampling, (2) chip sampling, (3) grab sampling, and (4) bulk sampling. The final sampling results depend upon how the four methods are combined to accurately determine the grade of the ore body. When used in conjunction with each other during different stages of mine development, the channel, chip, grab, and bulk sampling methods provide an in-house check or a comparison by which mining methods and sampling procedures can be evaluated. However, the most valid check is based upon the daily mill production. Channel Sampling Channel samples consist of cuttings collected from a groove cut into the rock about 102 mm (4 in.) wide and 19 mm (0.75 in.) deep. Various tools ranging from a 1.8-kg (4-lb) hammer and moil to a pneumatic chisel can be used to cut the sample. Accessibility and rock hardness determine the applicable sampling tools. Before attempting to take a sample, the rock surface must be cleaned thoroughly; the method of cleaning depends upon the amount of mine dust accumulated on the surface or the degree of alteration of the rock surface. Typical cleaning methods 'employ a wire brush, water, or chipping a fresh surface. Next, the sample outline is marked on the prepared surface, taking care to choose appropriate sample loca- tions. After determining the proper sample outline and length, the sample can be chiseled out, catching the rock fragments on a canvas tarpaulin on the floor, in a powder box, in a canvas bag to avoid contamination, or by some other suitable means to capture all of the sample. Vertical veins present a special problem because the drift's back usually is arched, not square. For example, Fig. 1 shows that if sample intervals are measured from A' to D', the length of the sample interval is greater than the true vein width, resulting in an incorrect calculation of the ore reserves. The correct method would collect three samples at A'-B', B'-C', and C'-D', using either actual measurements in the mine represented by A-B, B-C, and C-D or trigonometric calculations to determine the true ore thickness. Then, each sample can be weighted by grade and true thickness for the vein. Channel lengths usually are a maximum of 1.5 m (5 ft), and it is good practice to divide longer samples into smaller intervals according to structures, changes in rock types, or differences in rock hardnesses. The influence of those features on the mineralization then can be determined. Chip Sampling Chip sampling is a variation of channel sampling used when the rock is too hard to channel sample economically or when little variation in the mineral content indicates that this sampling method will yield results similar to those of channel sampling. Rather than cutting a channel in the rock, small chips are flaked off at regular intervals over the entire face or area being the mine. sampled. Care must be taken to assure that the sample is representative of variations in the rock hardness and type. hi^ method is fast and useful in preliminary evaluations, but it should not be used for quantitative ore-reserve calculations. Grab Sampling Grab sampling is a fast method for double checking either channel or chip-sampling procedures, and, in some instances, mine production can be estimated from carefully taken grab samples. Grab sampling takes equal amounts of material at selected intervals over a mine dump, a muck pile, or from an ore car to estimate its Channel Sampling mineral content. Generally, this method is not considered reliable. Many independent variables can affect this type of sampling process. Although trace amounts of Indium are found in many ores, commercial production of the metal has come almost exclusively from residues, flue dusts and slags generated by Zinc recovery operations. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. Some comments on production and price trends are included as well as our views on future availability.

Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind-backfilling process has been particularly successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. Using this newer technology, vast quantities of backfill material can be distributed over wide areas in underground openings from a small number of injection boreholes. The rapid and successful development of this backfilling method, however, has outstripped technology for monitoring and controlling backfill placement. Surface or borehole remote sensing methods are needed to determine where fill material is being distributed underground and how effectively the material is packed in the voids. In search for improvements in backfill monitoring and control technology, potential remote geophysical sensing, process monitoring, and tracer methods were evaluated to select candidate systems for monitoring backfill placement under the constraints imposed by the injection process and the surface and subsurface conditions. ' A multiple objective ranking matrix, based on theoretical considerations as well as pragmatic experience with systems working in related or similar conditions, was used to narrow down potential methods to several most-favored candidates. Two of the candidates were field tested under actual operating conditions at a backfilling site in the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton region of northeastern Pennsylvania. Although process and acoustic emission monitoring indicated promise for improving existing backfill monitoring technology, more extensive testing under different conditions at various sites is required to establish the validity and utility of these methods. Results indicate that no single method is adequate in itself for backfill monitoring, and that a successful system will require the Integration of several methodologies.

The role of the laboratory is described in relation to the prospecting and exploration of kaolin clays. Test methods used to evaluate crude ore samples of kaolin clay for commercial consideration are reviewed. A background of the kaolin mineral and known means of prospecting this mineral are presented. Common analytical methods are discussed with special emphasis on those in use today.

In Japan, almost no natural gypsum is mined for industrial uses of gypsum, and almost all gypsum is synthetic gypsum, that is desulphogypsum, produced by waste sulphur dioxide gas from metal smelters and power plants, and other industrial waste sources. The amount of such sythetic gypsum production has reached more than six million metric tons per year (1979). Major uses are for cements and building materials. Other uses are soil conditioner, investment casting mold, organic composite materials, etc and sulphur recovery by gypsum decomposition is being examined. This paper summarizes present Japanese production and uses of sythetic gypsun produced from industrial waste.

HISTORY The history of mining in the Outokumpu Co. shows continuous development of small and medium-sized mines, coupled with a permanent improvement in min¬ing methods and mechanization. Tables 1 and 2 provide a brief outline of the major events over the years of operation. Some of the mines have had relatively short lives as in the case of Nivala, Korsnas, Kylmäkoski, the surface pits of the Kotalahti, Vuonos, and Hammaslahti mines, and some very small pits. The sequence in which the mines started opera¬tions is shown in Table 1 and production increases in Table 2. GEOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK Most of the ore deposits in Finland (see Fig. 1) are situated in middle Precambrian (1500 to 2300 m.y.) formations corresponding to the Baltic shield. The ores and country rocks are generally firm, with a minimum compressive strength of 60 MPa (8700 psi). The sulfide ores, of importance to the national econ¬omy, can be divided into copper-nickel deposits, asso¬ciated with basic and ultrabasic rocks (1900 m.y.), and the sulfide ores found in well-preserved Svecokarelidic crystalline schists (1800 to 2300 m.y.) which contain varying amounts of copper, zinc, cobalt, nickel, and lead. Over 90% of the sulfide ore mined to date in Fin¬land and existing in the known ore reserves belongs to deposits situated in the main sulfide ore belt. The main sulfide ore belt includes the Outokumpu copper-zinc, the Kotalahti nickel-copper, the Pyhäsalmi copper-zinc, and the Vihanti zinc ore zones. The Outokumpu ore district occurs in a mica schist area about 60 x 100 km, in association with belts of metamorphic Svecokarelidic quartzites, black schists, dolomites, skarn rocks, and serpentinites. The main ore minerals are chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and sphalerite. In addition there are nickel and cobalt minerals such as cubanite and cobalt-pentlandite, which have been of economic importance. In this area, Outokumpu Oy exploits the deposits at Keretti and Vuonos. The latter was discovered as an extension of the Keretti ore field about 6 km to the northeast. The Kotalahti geological formation extends across nearly 400 km. The host rock of these mostly pipelike deposits is generally serpentinite, pyroxenite, or norite. The main ore minerals are pyrrhotite, pentlandite, and chalcopyrite. In this zone, the deposits of Kotalahti, Hitura, and Virtasalmi are at present under exploitation by Outokumpu Oy. The Vihanti geological formation is located in west¬ern Finland and is about 40 km wide and some 200 km long. The rock associations are crystalline schists including dolomites, mica schists, mica gneisses, gray¬wacke, and acidic or basic volcanic rocks, which change generally, in connection with the mineralization, into skarn and cordierite-anthophyllite rocks. The host rocks are dolomite, skarn, graywacke, and quartzitic rock and the principal minerals are sphalerite, chalcopyrite, galena, pyrite, and pyrrhotite. AVAILABLE MACHINES Machines discussed in this section include only rubber tire mounted kerf cutting machines of a self¬propelled electrically powered design. Such machines handle bars up to 4.6 m (15 ft) in length, cutting kerfs of from 115 to 191 mm (4.5 to 7.5 in.). The basic design concept of all machines currently in production is very similar. The chassis features dual driving wheels on the cutter-bar end, fixed directly to the main frame. The steering wheels on the outby end of the frame are articulated in some manner to keep all four wheels on the floor over uneven bottom. Machine power for tramming, and all other functions except powering the cutting chain, is furnished from a pump motor that drives the specific pump or pumps required by a given machine. The cutter chain is driven through a mechanical drive train from a separate electric motor having no duty other than driving the chain. The general arrangement of a cutting machine is shown in Fig. 1; two types of machines, with their specifications are shown in Figs. 2 through 5. A hydraulically powered cable normally is included to eliminate the need for manual cable handling and make this a one-man machine. A bug duster, though optional, is needed for most applications. The bug duster is an hydraulically driven scroll conveyor located directly behind the cutter chain drive sprocket. Its function is to move the cuttings away from the sprocket to prevent them from packing up in this area and consuming a lot of machine power to further pulverize them. Available machines vary from models 610 mm (24 in.) high that can cut horizontally only from 203 mm (8 in.) below ground line to 229 mm (9 in.) above, to machines 1143 mm (45 in.) high that can cut in any plane from 178 mm (7 in.) below the ground line to 3.7 m (12 ft) above it. Most currently manufactured machines fall in the 17 200 to 20 400 kg (38,000 to 45,000 lb) weight range, but can be dis¬assembled for underground installation where weight and size are a problem. Maximum teardown results in all pieces having a weight of 5400 kg (12,000 lb) or less and a size allowing passage through a 1.2 x 2.1-m (4x7-ft) opening. Further reduction in either size or weight of the parts becomes a serious problem. Machines currently being manufactured are avail¬able for use with power supplies of 250 v dc; 500 v dc; 440, 550, or 950 v ac (60 Hz). Also available are machines for use on 415, 500, and 950 v 50 Hz. De¬signs to allow operation on other voltages of either 50 or 60 Hz can be made available without any serious problems. As of September 1977, a typical medium-seam ma¬chine without the extra options needed for unusual conditions, but fully equipped to operate, was selling for about $185,000. As production of ground limestone increased our Company found it had an enviromental problem with limestone dust from our hammer mills. With the quarry and processing plant situated within 1 klm of a small township of 5000 people dust collection became essential. Regulations under the Clean Air Act 1972 also had to be complied with. Prior to this any demand for lime flour had been met by the use of a small drier and ball mill. Both expensive to operate. Dust emitting from the mills would amount to over 4000 tonnes per year. The cost savings were obvious. We had a better product which was essentially a by-product. Faced with a surplus of a very useful, but difficult product to handle we considered the possibility of disposing of it on the agricultural market.

The coal industry in South Africa is briefly outlined. Test- work carried out on bulk samples of coal in the laboratory and used in the design of the Van Dyks Drift washery are described. Factors affecting the selection of equipment and the designed capacity of the plant are discussed. A description of the crushing plant, washery and load out section is given together with performance data obtained in the final acceptance tests. New features incorporated in the Van Dyks Drift plant and in more recent plants of the Group are outlined.

GEOLOGICAL NOTES The area under discussion is situated approximately 150 m north of Loraine No. 3 shaft at ± 1500 m below surface. The block being mined extends from about halfway between 50 and 52 levels to just below 48 level (see Fig. 1). The EB reefs form the lower portion of the EB zone of the Elsburg series and in the 81 line area the various conglomerate bands show the best development. Up to 18 separate reef bands are developed and the distance from the bottom conglomerate band to the top is ± 26 m. The thickness of the quartzite which forms the middling between the various reef bands varies from 0.1 to 2 m. The strike is roughly north-¬south. The reef bands are payable individually. However, owing to the steepness of the reefs and their close prox¬imity, conventional mining would prove very difficult. The nonpayable reef bands all carry varying amounts of gold and the whole area is a massive payable reef body approximately 26 m wide and 60 m high at 300 to 400 m on strike. The major structure of the area consists of a north¬-south trending syncline. The western flank of the syncline has a steep easterly dip, in places approaching the vertical. This flank cuts out against the overlying rocks of the EA zone. The latter forms a noncon¬formity with the underlying EB zone. The eastern flank of the syncline dips to the west at an average dip of 0.17 rad (10°). The 0.1 rad (6°) north-plunging syncline was sub¬jected to severe faulting. The most important are the Nos. 4 and 10 faults, both of which have a roughly north-south strike. The No. 4 fault dips to the west at an angle of 1.04 rad (60°) with a downthrow of approximately 150 m to the west. The dip of the No. 10 fault is 0.69 to 0.81 rad (40° to 50°) west, with the western block having moved 150 m updip relative to the eastern block. The EB reefs are being mined by the sublevel stoping method down from the sub-outcrop position to the cutoff against the No. 4 fault. On the downthrow side of the No. 10 fault, that is just above the 54 level, two reef bands are payable and will be mined conven¬tionally. ROCK MECHANICS From the section in Fig. 1, it can be seen that the area under consideration is surrounded by stoped-out areas. This will naturally change the stress distribution extensively. The only way to calculate the stress field for such a geometry is to use the finite element method. It was established that this method worked for the present geometry and so the method was applied to predict the stress behavior of the final geometry. From the results, it appeared that the effect of the old stopes was to destress the area. There are, however, some areas-such as the 50 and 48 north footwall haulages-which will require continuous attention.
