The "Old Reliable" four million pound blast in March of 1972 marked the opening, as far as is known, of serious efforts to commercialize the In Situ concept. That was a coyote shot, and it was followed by three blasts at McAlester Fuel's "Zonia" operation which were surface hole shots. As the only individual who had a principal part in all four shots, it seems to be appropriate to present experiences in the developments and evolutions of the in Situ method of ore extraction. Some of the problems will be described, along with proposals for management of such projects in the future.

The Tunnel and Reservoir Plan (TARP) is the largest tunneling program in the history of the metropolitan Chicago area (Figure 1). Between September 1976 and September 1977, rock tunnel contracts having an estimated cost of approximately $420 million will be advertised. During the past six months, the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago (MSDGC) has awarded contracts for 16.5 miles of rock tunnels in diam of from 9 ft to 30 ft having a total bid price of $120,261,750. RECENT CONTRACT AWARDS Addison-Wilmette Tunnel $63,140,480 Upper Des Plaines #20 Tunnel 35,749,664 Upper Des Plaines #21 Tunnel 21,371,607 Addison-Wilmette Tunnel The first contract was advertised in September 1975. This contract, described as the Addison-Wilmette Tunnel, runs from Wilmette Harbor at Lake Michigan under the North Shore Channel to Addison Street in the City of Chicago, a distance of 10 miles. The contract calls for constructing approximately 27,750 linear ft of 30 ft ID and 24,020 linear ft of 22 ft ID unlined rock tunnels, excavation of two construction shafts, and the excavation of 32 drop shafts of various diam. Two hundred ninety-three companies were notified of this contract being advertised, 70 companies took out contract specifications and 3 companies ultimately submitted bids. [Duquesne Light Company's three power plants in western Pennsylvania are now receiving high BTU clean coal from a new coal preparation plant. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

Atlantic Richfield Company began operating a commercial uranium solution mining project in April, 1975 in Live Oak County, 10 miles southwest of the town of George West (Figure 1). The operation is designed to produce 250,000 pounds of U303 per year and is jointly owned by Atlantic Richfield Company, Dalco and U. S. Steel. The proprietary process employed in this operation consists of injecting an alkaline leaching solution into the ore-bearing formation through a pattern of injection wells. The uranium-bearing solution is then removed through producing wells using submersible pumps in central production wells. The produced solution is pumped through a pipeline to the plant area where the uranium is extracted. The barren solution is refurbished and returned to the pattern area for reinjection. The injection field and plant site are located in the drainage of Spring Creek, a small intermittent stream tributary to the Nueces River. Land use in the area is primarily agricultural -- cattle ranching and farming -- but several producing gas fields are present in the areas as well.

The air lift method of pumping water is discussed. A review of several large diameter hole drilling projects that used reverse circulation air lift techniques is presented. Proposals are made for reverse circulation flow rates for slow rates of bit penetration (5 fph) as well as reverse circulation flow rates for faster rates of bit penetration (10 fph). The Ingersoll- Rand air lift equations are modified for rotary drilling operations. By establishing minimum reverse circulation flow rates and utilizing the modified air lift equations, the establishment of minimum circulation equipment sizes and a more definitive requirement for improved bit body design should result.

The Kidd Creek orebody is a massive, base metal deposit with widths up to 600 feet and a strike length of 2,200 feet. The orebody dips eastwards at 70° to 80° and is amenable to sub-level open stoping. Five distinct zones (Fig.1) based on structural wall rocks and ore type parameters occur within the orebody. These zones are: Zone 1 - Mainly copper stringer ore Zone 2 - Massive pyrite ore Zone 3 - Massive sphalerite and chalcopyrite Zones 4 and 5 - Are banded and variable in nature Compressive strengths vary from zone to zone with an average of 22,000 p.s.i. and highs of 40,000 p.s.i. The mine is developed from a ramp extending from surface to the 1600 foot level and a 24 foot diameter, 3050 foot vertical shaft with main levels at 400 foot intervals. Sub-levels at 100 foot vertical intervals are driven from the ramp. transverse and longitudinal pillars to support the crown pillar left under the open pit. The layout allows an opportunity to enlarge or reduce pillar sizes and also to introduce fill on any horizon should conditions warrant. It also offers a large number of operating stopes spread through the various ore zones giving good ore blending characteristics. All ore from the stopes is handled through drawpoints using Wagner ST8 scooptrams with an average one way haul length of 650 feet.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

TRANSPORTATION TUNNELING The use of tunnels for transportation, namely rapid rail transit systems and highways is on the increase. How much that increase might be through the 1980's is the question that is discussed in this paper. In 1975, there were 218 route miles of subway tunnels for rapid rail transit and 154 lane-miles of highway tunnel. From the viewpoint of many transportation planners and designers, the tunnel is one of the tools which may be used to by-pass many types of obstacles: a mountain, a body of water, or a Central Business District (CBD). Therefore, the transportation tunnel is a rural as well as an urban solution with major emphasis on the latter because of the current transportation needs of our cities. In the case of rural locations, tunnels are usually constructed through mountains in order to eliminate miles of steep grades and dangerous curves, such as the Eisenhower Tunnel which cuts through the Continental Divide in Colorado along 1-70 and saves 10 miles and 40 minutes of driving time. Tunnels also provide an excellent transportation link across bodies of water in order not to interfere with shipping lanes. The Chesapeake Bay Tunnel and Bay Tubes of the BART system are excellent examples of this type of tunnel.

The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role and the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Estimates of an electrical double layer attractive energy between the bubble and the solid particle are made.

INTRODUCTION "On many projects, the tendency is to drop interest and support of the geological service as soon as it seems safe. That . . . is a short-sighted policy . . . It would be of further service perhaps to learn whether predictions were reasonably true to life." --C.P. Berkey, 1938 (3) This paper quantitatively compares predicted and encountered shear zone size and location and rock type for tunnels in the Colorado Mineral Belt. The Colarado Mineral Belt is composed of igneous formations with associated metamorphic rocks and faulting. As such, it represents the most complex of provinces for at-grade predictions (27). Shear zone and rock type data are assumed to be statistically homogeneous because of the common geology of the seven tunnels. It is often felt by geologists and engineers that the amount of information from which a geological model is created is so low that any statistical inferences are unstable. In other words, the addition of new data may drastically alter the means and variances suggested by the model. Therefore, predictions are rarely couched in quantitative statistical terms but modified with "probably," "most likely" or "possibly." Comparison of predicted and encountered data from past geological models will permit the "probably's" to be quantified and distilled from the art of geological prediction. To date, two other studies of the validity of predictions have been made (26 and 16). Together, these two studies indicate that

One of the most important applications of material handling engineering technology occurs in iron ore pelletizing plants. Although the total installed value of material handling systems in such plants, as well as in many other modern process plants, is a relatively small percentage of the value of the plants (5 to 10% perhaps), their significance is considerable. Indeed this significance equals that of the more expensive process equipment in the plant, since the failure of any component of any system causes, shutdown of the entire plant. It is because of this increased consequence of failure that design criteria for process plants are more conservative than for conventional material handling applications. A second unique characteristic of material handling technology applied to process plants in general is the variety of materials being handled and the wide range of problems this variety presents. One extreme encountered is the stickiness of filter cake. Here the entire design effort is aimed at keeping the material flowing through transfer points and preventing it from building up on components. Another extreme is the conveying of fired pellets - hard spheres with a very flat angle of repose and abrasive characteristics severe enough to make conventional wear plate materials impractical.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has let a contract for the excavation of three rock stations, spaced about 3550' (1082m) apart, beneath Connecticut Avenue in Washington, D.C. Two previous rock stations have been completed, one of which had a crown pilot tunnel excavated to explore geologic conditions that would be encountered during the station excavation. This pilot tunnel was primarily for inspection by bidders and design was based on core hole information. The other rock station had no pilot tunnel and was also designed on the basis of core hole information. The three rock station areas, which are the subject of this paper, have been explored by crown pilot tunnels and an as-built report, with geologic maps and sections, has been prepared, for use by the design engineer as the basis of design for support of the structures. The geotechnical report describes the geologic structure in detail and relates it to excavation and support of the three crown pilot tunnels and the running tunnels which will be enlarged to create the 58'W x 44'H x 700'(+)L (17.6m x 13.3m x 212m +) stations. The information was complete enough to permit the design engineer to visualize the geologic structure and compute loads for the various types of rock conditions. It was therefore possible to determine the size and spacing of the steel sets for the several different conditions of rock structure encountered in the pilot tunnels.

INTRODUCTION The LG-2 project is one element of the La Grande Complex, an integrated development of hydro-electric potential being constructed in north-western Quebec by the James Bay Energy Corporation. The project is located on the La Grande River about 65 miles east of Fort George on the James Bay coast and 600 miles north of Montreal. It comprises a 525 foot high dam, 81,000 feet of dykes, spillway and river diversion works and a 16 unit underground powerhouse that will have an installed capacity of 5,328 MW. The power installations at LG-2 represent approximately half of the total potential for the complex. When completed in 1982, LG-2 will rank as the largest underground powerhouse in the world. Studies and site explorations for the project were begun in 1971, construction commenced in 1973 and the roll date for the first machine is scheduled for February, 1980. GENERAL ARRANGEMENT OF POWER INSTALLATIONS As shown in Figure 1, the power installations are located on the south bank of the river about 4 miles downstream from the main dam. In the early 1960's the Company, then named the United States Smelting Refining and Mining Company, was drilling the Continental ore body located near Fierro, New Mexico. Reserves of underground ore of sufficient quantity were indicated to build a mill. At the same time some ore from the Continental No. 1 mine was being milled at the Company's Bullfrog Mill, formerly a lead-zinc mill. The copper ore in comparison to the lead-zinc ores was very hard, abrasive, and heavy. These factors pointed out the possibility and attractiveness of autogenous grinding. While prior to this some study had been given to autogenous grinding, no large scale tests had been made. Such a program was carried out and from the pilot plant data the following was established: 1. Grinding of the ore by autogenous means could be accomplished. 2. This could be done in one stage; however, not at a satisfactory tonnage throughput rate. Thus, the use of a secondary unit has been employed. 3. Grinding in the secondary unit could be done by pebbles generated in the primary unit. This resulted in the scheme whereby the ore would be ground 100% autogenously. 4. Liberation of the copper minerals was excellent so that good recovery at a satisfactory concentrate grade would be obtainable.

In order to provide a reference framework for discussing the applicability of drilling technology to shaft construction in coal mining ventures, it is meaningful to review the history and nature of United States coal mines relative to shafting. Coal mining in the United States is characterized by shallow depths relative to most of the coal mining world. While the trend is toward deeper and deeper mines, many new mines have shaft depth less than 800 feet, and a large number of operating mines are drift or outcrop mines utilizing shafts for ventilation and portals. In the past, shafts of 200-300 feet have been commonly constructed. The use of conventionally sunk shafts at present and in the past is due in part to the shallow shaft length required, favoring conventionally sunk shafts. Another factor is that large shafts are required for multipurpose and production shafts. A third has been the practice of utilizing shaft construction contractors who had been until recently very competitive with raise drilled shafts at shallow to moderate depths. Recently, however, the costs of conventionally sunk shafts have skyrocketed. Too, more shafts are being required. Several factors are responsible among which are: (1) The increasing depth of shaft required for new mines and for shafts in advance of old mines. This significantly affects unit costs, e.g. $/yd3,of conventionally sunk shafts. Moreover, more gas is encountered in the shaft sinking operation.

The next 13 years gave me an education that anyone, then or now, would well envy. W.T. Reid had founded Belmont School along the lines of Groton and, as at Groton, he sent many graduates to Harvard. He obtained excellent teachers and maintained as strict a discipline as the independent nature of the western students would stand. With a beautiful location in an unspoiled little valley in the foot- hills of the Coast Range there was every chance for walks and expeditions. The years at Belmont were good ones. My closest friends were Harold Jordan and Lewis Hackett. Lewis was son of the military director at the school. With half a dozen other very young inmates we early won the sobriquet of "The Dirty Dozen." Sliding down a steep muddy hill on barrel staves helped us earn the name. An inherited shyness exaggerated my sensitivity at being a "teacher's boy" and this prevented a close association with the wilder western boys who made up most of the schoolmates. Trapping wildcats and coyotes in the brush-covered hills and taking long walks gave me plenty to do. I had grown too fast and when I went to college was 6 ft 3 in. tall and weighed only 145 lb-hardly a respectable bean pole. I was only two months past 16 when I left for Harvard. The long summer vacations were happy ones. Most of them were spent in the high mountains, and even when I was ten years old I could keep up with anyone on long steep climbs. I learned to handle a rowboat during our stays at Lakeside, a rustic resort at the south- east corner of Lake Tahoe that could then be reached only by the steamer that made a dally trip around the Lake. INTRODUCTION The heavy risk inherent in all underground construction projects contributes significantly to the high cost of transportation tunnels. First, the knowledge of this risk leads the engineer to design conservatively. Second, the cost overruns are still common with a high proportion of them originating from corrective measures needed when unforeseen problems develop during excavation. These unforeseen problems includes - encountering unexpected objects, materials and water conditions - experiencing an unforeseen behavior of the materials - damaging property beyond the expected range of influence of the tunnel construction. To minimize these expenses, more emphasis is being placed on well planned and interpreted site investigation programs in the final design and planning stages of the project. It is well known that the cost of a planned excavation is less than the cost of dealing with the same conditions when they are encountered unexpectedly. Therefore, the objective of site investigation is to provide a complete set of reliable data for designers and contractors that is continuous along the projected tunnel alignment. Two alternatives axe available to achieve this objective; - for shallow tunnels, it is often feasible to generate continuous data by drilling appropriately spaced, vertical bore holes and applying sensing techniques for interpolation (1, 8). - for deep tunnels, or certain urban tunnels under existing structures, closely spaced, vertical bore holes are not feasible except for narrow zones at the portals. In such cases direct horizontal penetration may be required that may be complemented by radial sensing to extend the range of information.

The Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways (JNR) presently in operation between Tokyo and Hakata, approximately 1,000 km, was constructed at three stages: between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka opening in 1964, Shin-Osaka and Okayama in 1972 and Okayama and Hakata in 1975. Works on the extension of 400 km from Okayama to Hakata were launched in March 1970. As construction of the undersea Shin-Kanmon Tunnel on the extension was the toughest task, requiring many, many months, the work was undertaken earlier than any other works on the extension. It was brought to its completion in June 1974 at the cost of about 22, 000 million yen. The Shin-Kanmon Tunnel is the third undersea tunnel constructed to connect the main island of Honshu and Kyushu across the Kanmon Straits. (Table 1)

The Copper Canyon Cu-Au-Ag deposits include two geologically distinct hypogene ore bodies developed primarily in late Paleozoic rocks adjacent to a 38-m.y.-old potassic-altered granodiorite, whose emplacement seems to have been controlled largely by the Virgin fault, a north-striking normal fault. Widespread but subeconomic concentrations of sulfides as fracture and cavity fillings in skarn apparently preceded the final intrusion of the granodiorite. In the west ore body, metals reached ore-grade concentrations through the massive replacement of andradite by chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite mineral assemblages. The east ore body probably formed after the granodiorite reached its present level. Calculated 6dD values of water in equilibrium with primary and secondary biotites range from -76 to -99 per mil at temperatures indicated by d180 values from coexisting quartz and biotite. The lightest values are in secondary biotite from the east ore body. These data suggest that fluids associated with potassic alteration here were most likely composed of magmatic water mixed with some meteoric water.
