The lower Middle Cambrian phosphorite deposits of the Georgina Basin shown in Figure 1 were found in the period 1966-1968 by three companies, namely, International Minerals and Chemical Corporation, Continental Oil Corporation and Broken Hill South Limited. Of these deposits the significant ones are Duchess, Sherrin Creek, D Tree, Lady Annie, Lady Jane, and Wonarah which together aggregate several billion tons reserves of phosphate. Due to the economic factors of freight costs to the coast and softening of the world market price for rock phosphate, none of them is in production, nor is any in the development stage. This paper reviews the historical background to the discovery of these deposits and then deals principally with the discovery of non-outcropping phosphorites in the Barkly Tablelands of Northern Territory by the interpretation of gamma radiation logs of abandoned water bores.

Chemical oxygen supplies have been used for nearly 60 years, with their greatest application during the last 25 years. They are of two types, the superoxides and chlorate "candles", The superoxides are demand chemicals, responding to the needs of the user and to supply oxygen and remove carbon dioxide. Chlorate candles are formed solid element which furnish oxygen only and do not remove carbon dioxide. Properties of these materials will be described, with comments on the respiratory requirements of a man under various workloads, types of equipment which use chemical oxygen, comparison with other systems and potential application to an underground mine survival system.

In comparison to many mineral commodities, barite has a low unit value. It is mined and sold in low volumes in high-grade (90-98% BaSO4) forms to basically one industry that uses approximately 75% of the free world production. Based upon the above criteria, all factors must be considered in determining if a barite deposit is economical; such as, the type of deposit, mining and milling methods required, transportation to the markets, tariffs, local political conditions, etc. In other words, barite mines are made--not found. The length of this paper precludes any indepth discussion of geology, mining and metallurgy of barite. Most of this information can be found in data already published, such as D. A. Brobst's bulletin1 on the Barite Resources of the United States.

INTRODUCTION A program to insure adequate talent for development and management of our mineral resources entails two equally important and interrelated aspects: 1) attracting and retaining promising student talent, and 2) providing a first-rate education for those entering careers in mineral science and engineering. Manpower shortages have eased in many areas of engineering, particularly in those areas dependent directly or indirectly upon government contracts in space and war programs. However, in the minerals industry the needs still remain critical. As increasing concern over preservation of the environment has developed, the political and social reaction was to seek out major offenders, to look for "whipping boys" -- and the mineral industry was, and had been, an offender. It was there for everyone to take pictures, it couldn't be covered up, and the Department of the Interior lashed away in the beautiful and popular brochures: Quest for Quality, The Third Wave, The Population Challenge, and Surface Mining and Our Environment (Ravaged Land). The Sierra Club, the Field and Stream magazine, TV, and daily news media added their lashes. In the minds of our social-conscious youth the mineral industry took on the image of "exploiters" of natural resources; "polluters" of streams, lakes, and the atmosphere; "despoilers" of wilderness areas and scenic beauty -- a plague to combat, rather than an exciting challenge that entailed exploration of the remote, conquering of the primitive, and developing of the undeveloped. Enrollments declined and many traditional mineral engineering curricula were abolished or Integrated into other stronger engineering departments to meet student-faculty ratio requirements.

Collectors commonly used in flotation to date fall into two main classes: ionic and nonionic. The use of neutral or oily collectors is generally limited to the flotation of nonpolar minerals onto which they are adsorbed by forces of a physical or 'Van der Waals' type, while ionizable chemical collectors are utilized for all other types of minerals, adsorption in this case involving bonds essentially of a chemical nature. Though chemical adsorption is more selective than physical adsorption, even heteropolar collectors are active towards certain classes of minerals (sulphides for example) rather than towards one individual mineral. Thus, in order to float a given mineral from a mixture of minerals belonging to the same class, modifiers have to be used to render the action of the collector more specific. However, there are often considerable difficulties involved in this procedure and the desired results are not always attained, especially in the case of minerals of complex composition whose surface properties are not sufficiently well known. Hence the importance of seeking out collectors capable of linking selectively with given minerals. Selective linkage is possible if the collector structure incorporates active groups having specific affinity for certain cations characteristic of the mineral surface. The decision to investigate the possibility of utilizing chelate--forming reagents for flotation was based on the premise that phenomena which occur in solution and involve chemical reactions in the strict sense of the meaning and those which occur on the surface are closely correlated (1)

Activated bleaching clays, so called because of their ability to remove color bodies from bleach fats and oils, are produced from clays of bentonitic origin. Activation is achieved by subjecting these clays to physical or chemical alteration to increase selective sorption capacities (1) . The future of activated bleaching clays depends upon the ability of producers to recognize the new areas of applications which are arising, and their skill in developing sophisticated active clays to meet new and stringent requirements. The major portion of activated bentonites are produced for decolorization of oils. New techniques of activation will improve these clays for broader spectrum use. General properties expected to result from present activation methods are: 1. Modification of hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties and increased available surface area in non-aqueous systems, thereby improving sorption capacity and ability to remove color bodies from oils. The following additional properties will be expected from future activated clays: 2. High purity of the active clay with interfering impurities totally removed. 3. Increased selective sorption capacity in aqueous systems. 4. Selective chemical reactivity, such as oxidation or hydrolysis. This property is required for removing

The tremendous engineering advances occurring during this past century are very evident within the boundaries of the Anthracite Section of AIME. The Steelton plant of Bethlehem Steel Corporation, located along the Susquehanna River just east of the Commonwealth's capital at Harrisburg, for more than 105 years has experienced a most dynamic life which has paralleled America's industrial growth. (Figure 1) In June 1865, just after the Civil War, a group of men met to organize the Pennsylvania Steel Company. The war had brought into sharp focus the vital importance of the railroads to the country's expansion. Until that time wrought iron rails were used, and the replacing of track after only several months wear had become an almost unbearable cost. The spirit of free, competitive enterprise and the prospects of a lucrative market compelled these men to form that first Pennsylvania Steel Company and to develop better rail products. They issued the following statement: "...our desire to free ourselves from dependence upon a foreign market (has) led to the organization of the Pennsylvania Steel Company, and the parties who have connected themselves with it are determined to produce upon American soil all the principal manufactures of steel that are now, at such a serious cost for freight, commission, insurance, exchange, duty, etc., and often, with so much delay and uncertainty, imported from abroad. The initial step in the pelletizing of iron ores is the production of green balls. The importance of this step cannot be overemphasized as the physical quality of the green balls has a very significant effect on the subsequent induration process, regardless of the type of the indurating equipment employed. The ability of the green balls to withstand the rigors of handling, distribution, compaction and drying will have an effect on the degree of success of any pelletizing operation. Many factors affect the physical quality of the green balls including the prior processing of the iron ore, the characteristics of the balling feed and the type and quality of the binder used (if any). When working on the development of a new project or studying an existing operation, it is often desirable to determine what effect variations in these factors will have on green ball quality. It is generally impractical to make these determinations on a commercial, or even pilot plant scale, especially when the number of variables to be studied is large. Because of this, many organizations have developed batch techniques for producing green balls to enable them to perform such investigations with a minimum of time and expense. The batch balling method is at best, only an approximation of commercial balling systems. Many practitioners employ the use of pre-formed seed pellets to initiate a batch run. Thus, the growth mechanism encountered in any experiment is essentially snowballing. Unless an instability is introduced into a balling test (such as an excessive initial feed rate or an unusual feed material characteristic) the growth mechanism of coalescence is not present to a significant extent nor is it desirable. In a continuous operation, both mechanisms are present and necessary to sustaining the system. The batch balling technique thus produces pellets in an idealized manner and cannot be used to directly predict commercial green ball qualities. A general relationship does exist however, and the procedure is fairly sensitive to variations in test parameters. Although many refinements to this technique have been introduced over the years, batch balling is still essentially an art and subject to "operator effect". Therefore, to assure consistant and reliable results, skilled technicians who carefully adhere to established practice must be utilized.

Automation is a word whose meaning has been broadened by popular usage to include any labor saving device. We with restrict our usage to the replacement of human judgement by instrumental measurement and mathematical analysis in the control of industrial processes. Mineral concentration is an area which has resisted automation because of the great difficulty in developing measuring instruments which can exist in the rugged environment and can measure useful properties with acceptable accuracy. This is not the only factor limiting progress, but until recently it has been of over-whelming importance. The development of on-stream X-ray analysers, magnetic flowmeters and nuclear density meters for mineral slurries has eliminated this obvious barrier and is enabling us to locate and attack the less obvious problems which still limit our ability to automate concentrators. If we examine the history of automation in industries which are highly automated we find that it has usually gone through three distinct phases. The first phase has been regulation. This is the simplest form of control and involves manipulating some variable whose value is of no importance in order to maintain the value of some other variable which is important at a constant specified value in spite of disturbances which may occur in other variables which affect it. A simple example is the use of a control valve to maintain a constant flow of fluid in a line in spite of changes in pressure in the vessels at the ends of the line. The ( ) Tayaaja ( ) . The deposit ( ) 130 kilometers due east of the continental divide and approximately 290 kilometers east-southeast of Lima (Figure 1). Relief in the immediate vicinity of the mine, which lies or the west side of the Mantaro river, is in excess of 2,000 meters, and the elevation varies from a low of 2,000 meters above sea level on the Mantaro River to a high of 4,386 meters at point T-27 (Figure 2). Although the Cobriza deposit was first reported by the Italian Geographer Antonio Raimondi in 1866, only three reports have been published on the deposit, which began production in 1966 (Duefias, 1908; Fernandez Concha and Garcia y Garcia, 1961; Petersen. 1965). Many private reports have, however, been written by geologists employed by the Cerro de Pasco Corporation. These reports and the author's observations, while employed as the Cobriza Division Mine Geologists form the basis of the present paper, which describes the relations between-the ore controls in the Cobriza mine and the regional and local structure.

Tailings disposal has been a problem for the mining engineer since the beginning of the metal milling process. Disposal systems in common use have evolved as the most economic method for the disposal of an unwanted waste material within the disposal restrictions in force at the time of construction. As restrictions are constantly being expanded, the design requirements for tailings disposal systems are also being enlarged. However, proper design will always be to provide the most economic disposal system that will meet current safety and pollution requirements. This paper presents a brief description of some of the design features of tailings disposal systems in common use and presents specific design features of the gypsum tailings disposal pond at Kimberley, British Columbia, owned and operated by Cominco Ltd.

Uranium exploration in the Powder River Basin of northeastern Wyoming has been intensive since 1966 and in 1968 produced significant discoveries of reduced uranium ore by Humble Oil & Refining Company and others. Substantial reserves have been established in the area. High-grade carnotite ore was discovered in 1951 near Pumpkin Buttes in the central part of the basin (Fig. 1). Other mineralized areas were soon established from Pumpkin Buttes south to Monument Hill and Box Creek. Total production from these shallow oxidized deposits in the lower Eocene Wasatch formation was small. The AEC reports total production of 520,000 tons of ore averaging 0.19% U3O8. The authors are indebted to many people within Humble Oil & Refining Company and Esso Production Research Company for their assistance and guidance. SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS The Highland ore deposit, discovered in 1968, is a large uranium occurrence located in the southern part of the Powder River Basin. Uranium mineralization consists of sooty, black uraninite and coffinite coating sand grains and is concentrated along the margins of Tertiary fluvial sandstones. Uranium was transported by oxidizing solutions roving through the buried sandstones and spreading into less permeable channel-edge sandstones to form typical rolls and tabular deposits. Unaltered sandstones are light gray to gray-buff where the sandstones have been oxidized, the colors are various shades of red, yellow, and yellowish brown. An Oligocene tuffaceous source for the uranium is proposed; however, leaching of the arkosic and tuffaceous host sediments may also have provided a source.

The authors' company has recently undertaken a development programme aimed at exploring the relationships between the variables of greatest importance in the design of mixer-settlers for metallurgical solvent extraction applications. Such applications vary from relatively small scale plants treating copper mine waters, nickel containing effluents, etc., where the total flowrates may be of the order of a few hundreds of gallons per minute, to very large scale plants treating several thousands of gallons per minute of leach liquors containing copper, uranium or other metals. This paper outlines the physical and mechanical factors which must be taken into account when designing mixer-settler systems for large scam. solvent extraction plants. The performance of the equipment will also be dependent upon the chemistry of the system, including the kinetics and thermodynamics of the ion exchange reaction itself, the effect of impurities flocculants, surfactants, temperature, etc., but these will not be dealt with here. Much of the laboratory work has been carried out using copper containing solutions and either LIX 64* or LIX 64N* as the solvent dissolved in various grades of kerosene. For simplicity, all the graphs and tables of results which are presented and discussed here will refer to the LIX-copper system, although the conclusions will in many cases be generally applicable to other systems also. The LIX-copper process is now sufficiently well known to obviate the need for a full description, however, an outline flowsheet of the process is shown in Figure 1. The ultimate objective of a laboratory programme for a particular extraction application is to provide data upon which a mixer-settler system can be designed to handle a given throughput of leach liquor and extract from this liquor the maximum quantity of metal for the minimum cost. In other words, the objective is to determine the design and operating parameters which achieve the optimum balance between capital and operating costs. * Trade-marks for General Mills solvents.

Thirty years ago it was possible to locate a quarry site for crushed rock for concrete aggregate by finding the nearest solid rock bluff accessible by road, But times have changed and the location of a quarry site to furnish crushed rock for concrete aggregate now has become rather complicated, Although both sand and gravel can be used for aggregate, this discussion will be confined to crushed rock in the regions around a metropolitan area. Let us assume that a consultant has been retained to advise on the desirability, and the possibility, of opening a new quarry within a given area. The problems are geological and ecological. Since the geological problems are simpler, they will be discussed first. Generally, the first step is to make a market study of competitive aggregate sources within the projected area. Assuming that the quality of aggregate to be sold by competitors as well as their mining costs will, within narrow limits, be the same, the problem becomes essentially a study of haulage costs from established quarries into the projected new area. Since haulage cannot be effected along straight lines and since each quarry operator may have different unit haulage costs, a map showing lines of increasing cost intersecting points on roads available for truck haulage radiating from competitive quarries can be rather complicated. Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of handling bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at approximately the same speed and with minimum impact, then most of all belt conveyor problems disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. This paper will establish and discuss some general design criteria required for proper loading and transfer of materials from one conveyor to another. Specific attention is given to loading points, chutes, skirt board length and general design of transfer structures.

This paper deals with some aspects of concrete construction in remote locations and/or cold climates. The writer's experience covers 25 years in construction in western and Central Canada. I will bring forth some pertinent observations and cost facts learned from this experience. Let us start by saying that there is nothing more important than preplanning the entire project. By this I mean the production of the engineering design, working drawings, soliciting of prices and ordering of all equipment and contractors work, the delivery of all equipment and all onsite work. All of this should be placed on a master schedule, preferably a C.P.M. We have been using C.P M. Scheduling for all of our work for 5 years and have found it in-valuable. This preliminary schedule will show initial items of work and target dates. After main equipment orders are placed and deliveries confirmed, the construction schedule can be revised to include manpower and construction equipment requirements. From this information the size of camp is determined. This, of course, must be ordered several months ahead. The manpower schedule can be broken into trades to tell us the number of men of each trade required at any time. This is important in helping to determine where the men must come from and whether or not any incentive is needed to get them. The schedule will also point out if it is impossible to get the project closed in before winter becomes too severe unless overtime is worked or the project is started in early spring. In most parts of Canada cold weather starts in October and lasts through April. A common term of reference has been to wait for the frost to come out of the ground before starting work in the spring. An industrial minerals review involves an attempt to assemble field and statistical data which are obscure, elusive and incomplete. Often, when me statistical data are available, combining or lumping of commodity values conceals the value of specific items. Personal knowledge of the minerals known to occur in the area of concern, combined with whatever available published data may be compiled, together with careful use of several extrapolation methods, may yield an acceptable summary review of the industry. However, it is particularly hazardous to speculate on future trends and economic aspects because of the many unpredictable variables which may affect the industrial minerals business. Among these variables are the effects of diverse geological conditions, the impact of technological changes (including new uses for minerals not formerly considered industrial types), changing socio-economic factors (including growing environmental controversy), use of substitutes and even recycling of some of the industrial minerals (for example, building materials, lime, etc.). My main objectives are to reveal, as accurately as I can, the state of the in¬dustrial minerals situation, and the effects of possible future developments on this industry in Idaho. Where the words...industrial-tyke minerals, .are used in this discussion, reference is made to selected metallic and nonmetallic minerals and related materials, as well as rock (Table I). Industrial minerals known to be present in Idaho may be listed under general use categories as in Table 1. Some of these commodities are being marketed, have been marketed in the past, or occur in potentially marketable quantities. Mineral fuels are neither mentioned, nor are they considered important in Idaho. Based upon our present knowledge and lack of known, economically valuable occurrences of these commodities, they are considered insignificant (Idaho Bur. Mines and Geology, 1964). Idler engineering, operation, and maintenance cannot be covered in depth in a short paper. Therefore, this will be a general look into the subject matter in light or the present-day technology. Depending on the source or reference used, belts for handling bulk material underground came into being between 1900 and 1920, while strip mining appeared in the thirties. The conveyor belt speeds in that era were in the 300 rpm to 500 rpm range. Belt speeds or 600-700 rpm were in vogue in the thirties, and the early sixties saw speeds or 800-900 rpm. Today, speeds or 1000 rpm are not looked at with dismay; in fact, speeds or 2000 rpm are being discussed. Among the driving forces moving the bulk materials handling industry to these greater heights have been the mining operators and engineers. Their appetite to increase output, yield, and reduced per-ton costs has constantly challenged the bulk material handling industry to develop products capable or handling these increased capacities. One or the products affected by this movement is the idler. Apart from the conveyor belt itself, it is one or the most significant parts or a conveyor system because or the sheer numbers needed in an installation.

In the last decade or so, the importance of effective preventive maintenance controls and practices has taken on a new and accelerated emphasis. Advances in technology and changes in equipment and product designs impose more precise and demanding standards of quality, productivity and customer service at a very rapid pace. Daily, it is becoming more apparent that in order to fulfill current requirements, existing manufacturing practices and associated control programs must also be upgraded and expanded. This is particularly true in the field of maintenance services. As production and quality standards become more demanding, effective equipment maintenance takes on more importance and becomes more difficult to sustain. In modern plants, the failure of a single equipment component can shutdown a complete production line causing interruptions to operating and shipping schedules that result in costly downtime, dissatisfied customers, and reduced profits. These costly experiences can be minimized with an effective maintenance program that provides maximum equipment reliability and minimum downtime and readily adapts to revision and change. There are several limestone deposits around the Lohja area in southern Finland. Raw material for cement rock is mined from some of them. The formations are geologically complicated, and therefore selective mining is used whenever possible. One of these mines is the Tytyri underground limestone mine, which is divided into two parts; Törmä and Solhem. In addition to the selective mining system hand sorting or picking must be used at the Tytyri mine to improve the overall grade of the blended limestone. Some means were needed in order to improve the quality and to increase the feed rate by the elimination of hand sorting. Sorting machines were considered and eventually a Sortex 811MW was pilot plant tested at the Ojamo mine near Tytyri. This machine now continues to be used on production.
