Liberation of valuable minerals during size reduction is an important aspect of mineral processing technology. In practice, most quantitative information on liberation is based on the application of stereological theorems for the analysis of image data from two-dimensional polished sections. On this basis an estimate of the volumetric grade distribution is made. Recently, a new method based on cone-beam xray microtomography has been used for direct determination of the three-dimensional liberation spectrum of multiphase particles 100 microns in size or less. Preliminary results for a packed bed of particles indicate that high spatial resolution (approximately 15 microns) and the direct processing of raw volumetric data are two important benefits offered by this new method. Three dimensional liberation analysis by microtomography provides an excellent opportunity to overcome many of the limitations of currently used polished section techniques. For example, detailed textural information is provided. Of course microtomography provides an independent method to verify current procedures used for analysis and transformation of polished section data into an estimate of the volumetric grade distribution. More important, however, is the possibility that this method could be developed as a routine procedure for liberation analysis in the 21st century.

Copper ore from the Rakha Copper Concentrator (India) was successfully floated using LIX-65 NS as the collector. The beneficial role of this reagent was clearly demonstrated in hatch-flotation tests. From a feed containing around 1% Cu, it was possible in a single-stage flotation to obtain a 23.7% Cu concentrate with a recovery of more than 90%. The plant now uses rougher, scavenger and a two-stage cleaning process. The tests demonstrated that LIX-65 NS is superior to conventional xanthate for the recovery of copper from the Rakha ore.

The effect of pulping reagents on the flotation de-inking of laser printed wastepaper was investigated with regard to the removal efficiency of toner and mineral filler particles for different pH values. These results show that caustic pulping causes the toner to be released from the fibers at larger particles sizes. On the other hand, acid pulping not only causes the toner to be released at smaller particles sizes but also increases the concurrent flotation removal of mineral filler particles. It was experimentally observed that the froth generation and stability during flotation were improved for acidic pH values.

INTRODUCTION Technologic progress depends on new and innovative ideas, the practical application of these ideas, and finally as the technology is developed and demonstrated, the engineering improvement or replacement of existing capabilities. In many areas the new ideas, although known, are not immediately put to practical use in all applicable fields. Good technologic forecasting for research and development within the excavation field coupled with adequate technology transfer is necessary to ensure timely application of innovative ideas to remove bottlenecks in the total system. The purposes of this paper are (1) to show the potential ability of technologic forecasting to meet future demands in rapid excavation through the acceleration of excavation rates by research and development in several related technologic fields, (2) to provide a brief review of the initial development of the ARPA (Advanced Research Projects Agency) Rock Mechanics and Rapid Excavation Program, (3) to draw attention to the research projects completed or underway in the FY 1970-1972 ARPA program and explain where information or program results can be obtained, (4) to summarize the progress and accomplishments of applied research contracts in the rock disintegration element of the ARPA program, and (5) to discuss the research directions planned for the remaining years of the program. As a result of higher levels of production and greater depths the underground mining industry in the UK is encountering hotter climates in some workplaces. It is widely known that high heat and humidity in an underground workplace will result in reduced performance and may also seriously impair the health and safety of the workforce. It is therefore of paramount importance that the underground environment can be effectively predicted in order that sound decisions can be made to reduce the effect of climate on working personnel. Over the years numerous computer programs have been developed to predict the climate in underground mines. One such important program, developed by McPherson, is CLlMSlM TM which is a prediction model of heat and mass transfer along a single roadway. This paper describes the development of a computer model, called DRIVE, to predict the climate in single entry drivages. This program incorporates the theory established by McPherson for the development of CLlMSlM TM. This involves the algorithm for unsteady state heat transfer. Throughout the development of DRIVE underground measurements have been taken to correlate the program. DRIVE will predict the changes in psychrometric and thermo- dynamic conditions along the drivage depending on a number of parameters. Firstly, the type of auxiliary ventilation system employed such as forcing, exhausting, overlap. Secondly, the addition of heat and moisture due to autocompression, machinery, strata, fissure water, oxidation, broken rock, fallen rock, refrigeration equipment, lighting, personnel, service water. Within the last year, the Nation has been shocked by two major tunneling disasters. Almost exactly a year ago 17 men died in the San Fernando Tunnel in an explosion attributed to gas. A few months later another 21 men died in an explosion laid to the same cause at Port Huron, Michigan. The analysis of the causes of these accidents is still continuing. While it appears that they differ substantially from each other in their specifics, they share the common trait that, like most industrial accidents, they might well have been prevented. Gas explosions in tunneling are neither new nor particularly unusual. Forty years ago, Assistant Director Jarrett was hired as a safety engineer on the Hetch Hetchy Aqueduct in California after an explosion that killed 12 men. Prior to 1946, in California alone, the Bureau of Mines had recorded 27 gas explosions incidental to hard rock mining and tunneling. The purpose of this paper is to review the status of the principal regulations affecting tunneling and to indicate some ways in which safer and more healthful conditions can be obtained. The Bureau of Mines was established by an Act of Congress of May 16, 1910. Since that time the Bureau has been making investigations and compiling and publishing health and safety data relating to mining and to tunneling. If any benefit is to come from an anaylsis of tunneling accidents, it must be the knowledge needed to prevent their repetition. The Bureau of Mines has also had informal discussions with the Department of Labor regarding the possibility of the Bureau's assuming that agency's responsibility for tunnel inspections.

Injecting pressurized water into a coalbed prior to mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Because of economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is now limited to the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes that are drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob-gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72 longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob-gas boreholes. Computer coalbed-reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water-infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No. 3 Coalbed.

There exists a wide array of industrial byproducts that produce beneficial responses in the soil/ plant environment. These materials range from clean-coal-technology residues produced during the generation of electric power (particularly those high in gypsum) to mineral fines produced by the aggregates industry (i.e., sand, gravel and crushed stone). A number of these materials are examined in relation to potential nutritional interactions in soils and crops with emphasis on trace elements. The significance of utilizing these materials in agriculture as a component of sustainable agricultural systems are discussed.

The major cost in comminution is energy consumption, which can be as high as 50% of the operating cost. Improvements in plant operations have resulted in up to a 15% reduction in energy usage (kw-hr/t). These improvements have been made through the optimization of grinding efficiency and the use of expert model-based control systems. Optimization involves the determination of the levels of the critical-operating conditions that result in the most efficient breakage of ore in the mill. These optimal levels are identified through plant/laboratory test work and through computer simulation using advanced process models. Model-based expert control achieves the maximum performance from the grinding circuit by identifying the characteristics of the ore in the mill with an optimal on-line estimator. Using this information, the control system dynamically determines the operating point that will yield the optimal performance. Two industrial applications of grinding-circuit optimization and model-based control are presented to demonstrate the power of this new technology.

In a country richly endowed in mineral wealth, Climax Arimco Mining Corporation's (CAMC) Dinkidi porphyry Au?Cu deposit in Nueva Vizcaya province, Philippines, represents the most significant mineral discovery in the country in recent times. The deposit is located within a belt of young intrusive and volcanic rocks in the Sierra Madre mountain chain of north Luzon a region previously unassociated with porphyry-style mineralization. Since 1989, drilling of the Dinkidi deposit has outlined a resource of 124 million tonnes of 1.0 g/t gold and 0.41 % copper. Regional exploration throughout CAMC's 37,000 hectare FTAA has identified a further sixteen potential porphyry-related deposits. A new mining law was passed in March 1995 but prior to that CAMC had the first Financial and Technical Assistance Agreement (FTAA) granted by the Philippine government allowing 100% foreign ownership of mining projects.

ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

Dramatic economic and political reform is under way in the transitional economies of the world. Transition extends beyond the restructuring of a nation's economy and political thinking. It also affects social, cultural and even religious aspects of society. Transition is a long-term process and generally unstable as the pace of reform is rarely the same across the many spheres of society. As nations modify their economies, industrial activities - including minerals exploration, extraction, processing and trade - are also being affected, according to a Financial Times of London management report. Mining policies are being revised to encourage greater foreign involvement, while legal regimes are being rewritten to protect foreign investments. From India to Peru, and South Africa to Russia, countries have been preparing, improving and expanding foreign investment laws, mining codes and economic stimulus measures to accelerate their minerals development. Privatization of mining is proceeding in many nations. Meanwhile, corporatization of former ministries and government agencies responsible for mining is also occurring. According to Minerals and Mining in the Transitional Economies: Poised For the Future, common objectives in the restructuring of a mining industry are to enhance overall economic and industrial growth, improve efficiencies in mineral recovery and use, acquire newer, advanced technologies, reduce environmental repurcussions of mining and improve safety conditions. The nature of mining is changing noticeably within the transitional economies. The industry is becoming more re¬sponsive to market forces and private sector concerns. The new report examines the changing characteristics of mining in the transitional economies. These include nations moving from centrally planned to market economies, as well as countries in the midst of economic and political reform, including the liberalization of industry. Information is presented to help business planners understand the impacts of transition on mining activities and re-evaluate their longterm strategies and market development policies. The document is divided into 10 chapters. Five of them are devoted to the evolving mining industries of Russia, South Africa, India, Peru and China. These countries were highlighted because their minerals sectors are undergoing changes. These include the opening up of their resources to foreign mining companies. According to the report's author, mining in the transitional economies during the next decade will be characterized by: ? Continued rewriting of national mining policies to create more favorable investment climates. ? Increased exploration for gold and selected base metals in newly opened regions. ? Innovative project financing schemes involving multiple partners and international lending institutions, such as the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). ? Increased gold and copper ore production capacity resulting from new investment and expansion of existing operations. ? Continued geographical shifting of metallurgical processing facilities from developed to other mineral-producing nations. ? Privatization of state-owned mining and processing assets requiring advanced technologies for improvement or expansion. ? Increased awareness of environmental concerns in business decisions related to mining and metallurgy.

The use of stone in building construction predates written history. From the time that stone was first used, builders have constructed stone buildings predominately from local or regional materials. However, since World War II, the stone business has become increasingly global. For example, French limestone is now sold to builders in the United States, and American granite is shipped to Japan. The internationalization of architectural and construction firms has encouraged this trend. Differences among nations in trade practices, environmental demands and the level of knowledge of dimension-stone characteristics make international trading in stone a risky and potentially disastrous business for unwary participants.

The occurrence of underground fires in narrow tabular ore- bodies where high density timber support is used is a dangerous and disruptive occurrence. The containment and extinguishing of the fire remains a very important consideration in reducing not only the loss in production time but also in limiting the extent of the area damaged by the fire. Mindful of this, Gold Fields have adopted and developed the inert gas generator system from its origins in Poland for use in Group precious metal mines. The system generates an oxygen- deficient atmosphere which is introduced in the fire area after this has been sealed. A number of problems had to be overcome to operate this system successfully within the infrastructure of these mines. Of particular significance is the operation of a jet engine, the prime component of the system, at air pressures encountered below sea level. The modifications have been found to be satisfactory to the point where, since 1992, ten underground fires have been extinguished using this system. Invariably, the areas affected by these fires were extensive (over 1 000 000 m3) and required continuous operation of these units over extended periods of time (in some cases in excess of 400 hours).

Surface subsidence process due to underground coal mining often has the potential to cause problems to buried pipelines. In this paper, a technique for assessing the stress level on a subsidence-affected pipeline is introduced. The main contributors for the stresses on the pipelines are identified. Mitigation techniques for reducing the stress on the pipeline have been proposed and successfully tested.

Eight Mine Weather Stations (MWS) installed at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) to monitor the underground ventilation system me helping to simulate real-time ventilation scenarios. Seasonal weather extremes can result in variations of Natural Ventilation Pressure (NVP) which can significantly affect the ventilation system. The eight MWS(s) (which previously collected and stored temperature, barometric pressure and relative humidity data for subsequent NVP calculations) were upgraded to provide continuous real-time data to the site wide Central Monitoring System. This data can now be utilized by the ventilation engineer to create real-time ventilation simulations and trends which assist in the prediction and mitigation of NVP and psychrometric related events.

This technical note describes an alternative procedure that can be used in linear programming calcula¬tions where the compliance limit of lbs S02/million Btu for the blending coal is subject to change. Dr. Mateer in his technical note titled "Coal blending for sulfur compliance" (ME, September 1994, p. 1103) defined an "excess sulfur" parameter that provides a valid constraint equation for a linear program optimization. The coals used by Dr. Mateer in his examples are shown in Table 1. To create the parameters for the constraint equa¬tions to blend to an SO2 content of 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu; the excess sulfur for Coal A was defined as Sulfur excess%o = 0.5 - 0.6-13,000/10,000 = -0.28 This equation was used to create the constraint equation -0.28A + 0.44B + 1.36C<- 0.0 Another way to create the parameters for the constraint equation is given below. Polymer utilization has increased steadily over the past several decades; however, their usefulness is sometimes limited by natural forces. For example, polymers tend to degrade when subjected to elevated temperatures. This degradation can release toxic fumes, create excess smoke, and aid in the spread of fire. For these reasons, many polymers are filled with various compounds which impart flame retardancy (FR) properties. These fillers do not make polymers non-combustible; rather, they increase resistance to ignition and reduce bum rate. Also, they suppress smoke generation, which is important as up to 80% of fire-related deaths are due to smoke inhalation [1]. Therefore, methods to impart flame retardancy in polymers are industrially important. The early flame retardants used in polymers were halogen-based, working on the principle of inhibiting free radical formation in the vapour phase thus impeding combustion propagation [2]. Usually these were combined with antimony compounds such as Sb203 to decrease loading, yet provide the same FR qualities. However, questions have arisen recently concerning toxicity of halogenated flame retardants. Possible release of toxic compounds (such as dioxins) upon combustion has been reported [3]. Fear of future regulations concerning halogen addition has led to the search for different FR fillers. Two of the more common replacements for halogen-based systems are alumina trihydrate (Al(OH)3 or ATH), and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2)&apos; These systems impart flame retardancy through heat absorption and by release of water of hydration upon their decomposition. ATH has a low decomposition temperature (230°C), limiting its use to unsaturated polymers, epoxies, urethanes, and some wire and cable formulations. However, some advantages of ATH over halogenated FR are that it is relatively cheap, doesn&apos;t generate toxic gases, is non-volatile, and is impervious to moisture [2].

INTRODUCTION Geophysical applications to engineering projects are usually considered for reconnaissance exploration, and for some preliminary design phases. Recent experience indicates a growing need and a greater number of requests for measurements during construction. This is particularly true where seismic velocity values are related to strength properties of rock. Typical project objectives during construction are: dike and tunnel realignments required by surprise conditions encountered during foundation preparation; checks on grouting effectiveness which require velocity measurements before and after grouting; and dynamic moduli measurements along the walls of tunnels and deep excavations. This paper considers one of the on-site seismic applications that is rather simple and straightforward, and yet has few references in the literature. The specific objective is the measurement of seismic velocities (both "P" waves and "S" waves) for determining the thicknesses and dynamic moduli values of loosened zones of tunnel wall rock. PRE-EXCAVATION SEISMIC METHODS The seismic methods suitable for engineering project studies are well known and especially suited for routine site reconnaissance; these are illustrated in Fig. 1.
