Yield pillar-based gate road designs oftentimes fail to provide mine operators with adequate ground control because of the unknowing misemployment of "critically" sized pillars. A "critical" pillar is one that is too large to either yield nonviolently or yield before the roof and floor sustain permanent damage, but is too small to support full abutment loads. To demonstrate the critical pillar concept, a field study of a tapering gate road was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines at the Sunnyside Coal Mines, Sunnyside, UT. Extreme pillar stresses and associated coal bumps characterize the response to first panel mining of a 16.8-m wide critical design. Significantly lower pillar stresses, early yielding of the pillar and adjacent panel rib, and an absence of coal bumps suggest that a narrower 12.2-m-wide design more closely approaches proper yield pillar dimensions. Probehole drilling of several 1 O.6-m-wide pillars revealed low stress levels and substantial pillar and panel rib yielding prior to abutment onset, indicating a properly functioning yield pillar design.

The potential application of flotation for the treatment and processing of a fine-particle coal stream was investigated for the Chaili Coal Washery of the Zaozhuang Coal Mine Administration, Shandong Province, China. A goal of the test work was to evaluate the application of the Microcel™ flotation column and compare its performance to conventional flotation. Small-scale flotation tests were performed in the laboratory and on-site with fine coal slurry samples from the plant thickener underflow, i.e., the washing plant's undersized reject material. Flotation tests were conducted on-site with a 7.6-cm diameter Microcel™ column and with small-scale conventional cells. Column flotation tests were performed to determine a recovery-grade relationship for the fine coal feed, which contained about 24% ash, and to obtain sufficient data to enable scale-up to a large diameter unit. A primary objective as to establish the maximum throughput capacity of a Microcel™ flotation column while operating to produce a clean coal product with ash content of 7.5-7.8%. Results of the test work indicate that this product quality could be achieved at feed rates of 15-19 tph to a 3-m diameter Microcel™ flotation column. Lower ash products, i.e., 5-7% ash, were obtained but at lower column throughput capacities. Comparative flotation tests, conducted with conventional flotation cells, indicated that a product ash of only 8% or greater was achieved in a single-stage test.

For several years, Independence Mining Co. (IMC) has routinely used oxygen fluid-bed roasting to pre-oxidize refractory gold ores ahead of conventional carbon-in-leach (CIL) processing. Oxygen serves jointly as the fluidizing medium and the combustion gas. This technology has proven to be reliable, environmentally sound and cost-effective. IMC is a subsidiary of the Minorco group. The company operates the Jerritt Canyon (a joint venture with FMC Gold) and Big Springs gold mines in the Independence mountain range north of Elko, NV. Ore bodies in the range contain characteristic refractory ore. It requires pre-oxidation ahead of conventional CIL processing. This article describes the technology developed specifically to treat these difficult ores.

The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) began research to improve the safety and efficiency of transporting coal from underground coal mines using a balanced air-lift hydrohoist (ALH). ALH includes a U-tube pipeline that can be installed through an existing shaft or two surface-drilled holes connecting the mine level to the surface. Bench- and pilot-scale models were tested to evaluate the feasibility of hydraulically hoisting a coal-water slurry in a riser pipe by injecting compressed air microbubbles. A prototype injector was developed that continuously compacted -50-mm (2-in.), run-of-mine coal in a screw feeder and injected a thick coal slurry into ALH. Initial production rates of 40 t/h (44 stph) through a 200-mm-(8-in.-) diam riser pipeline were achieved with a50-m- (165-ft-) high pilot-scale model. The potential productivity was expected to increase to 100 t/h (110 stph) through modification of the coal injector.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. The application of on-line ash analyzers in coal processing has become widespread. However, the analyzers are employed largely in monitoring, blending or sorting applications. Just recently has work begun on using on-line ash, moisture and/or solids data for plant control; and even more recently for localized circuit or unit operation control. Process Technology, Inc. (PTI) has since 1990 placed several bulk coal and slurry analyzers in practice where Fuzzy Logic Control (FLC) loops are used to manipulate controllable variables in real time. This technology is now being advanced by PTI. Unit operations where FLC has been employed in feedback loops using on-line ash analyzers include: heavy media vessels, cyclones, concentrating tables and froth flotation. The design, implementation and improvements attainable in preparation plant control using on-line ash analyzers are outlined in this paper.

In situ leaching, initiated in 1986 at the San Manuel Mine, was economically developed in 1989. The primary reason for this lag time between startup and viable production was the time required for technical development. The technical development pursued comprised detailed design, development and implementation of in situ well construction methods, formulation of suitable well pattern arrays and the development of extensive hydrogeologic and geochemical knowledge of the mineral deposit. Since 1989, the in situ leaching program has become a viable and cost-effective method to extract copper from the supergene mineralized zone of the San Manuel deposit. The in situ leaching methods that are currently used have been progressively expanded and continually developed. They will become the cornerstone of copper production from the San Manuel oxide mineral deposit. This paper presents an overview of the supergene hydrogeology, current design techniques, drilling methods and well completion, pump determination and setting, solution management and future plans for the increased extraction of copper by in situ leaching methods at the San Manuel Mine.

Mineral properties and mineral firms often trade at a market value that is significantly greater than the value indicated by discounted cash flow (DCF) techniques. A possible explanation is that DCF analysis does not consider the value derived from managerial flexibility. Presumably, then, at least some of the difference between DCF value and market value is due to managerial flexibility. This paper surveys the recent attempts to empirically quantify the value of managerial flexibility using option pricing theory. The results indicate that managerial flexibility, at least as measured by the option pricing methodology, falls well short of explaining the gap between DCF value and market value.

Natural and synthetic colors are used in almost every facet of daily life as a means of communication and expression. Natural ochres, umbers, hematites and magnetites were once used in their crude or semiprocessed state for their pigment value in construction products and low-end coatings applications. In recent years, though, they have yielded to synthetically produced iron oxides for more sophisticated products. Today, through innovative mining processing and marketing techniques, natural iron oxide pigments are once again gaining strong inroads into products and markets requiring precise chemical and physical characteristics. With the focus on environmental consciousness and resource conservation, value added natural iron oxides provide an economical and responsible alternative to color needs.

Introduction Typical dragline rigging includes several sets of ropes: hoist ropes, drag ropes, dump ropes and boom suspension ropes. The drag and hoist ropes contribute most to the dragline operating cost. Both work in very difficult conditions and wear out rapidly. As a result, frequent rope changes are required resulting in substantial cost and productive time loss. Although performance of rigging has a profound impact on dragline efficiency, there are no common, industry accepted standards related to its selection, operation and maintenance. Little information on the subject is available and the practice differs widely throughout the industry. The performance of drag and hoist ropes depends on: •rope construction that should closely match requirements of the specific application, rope operating conditions and its maintenance and • correct definition and application of the rope discard criteria so that full advantage of the rope can be taken without endangering safety of its operation. This paper reviews the present practice related to all these factors. Its findings are based on the wide survey of the present industrial practice. Field survey In total, 33 North American dragline applications were surveyed of which 17 were Bucyrus-Erie machines, 10 were Marion and six were Page (now P&H). Most of the draglines were stripping overburden in coal mines, but the survey also included some unique applications such as phosphate mining in Florida and oil sand mining in Alberta. Hoist drive power of the surveyed machines varied from 300 to 7775 kW (400 to 10,400 hp). Drag drives varied from 300 to 5815 kW (400 to 7800 hp). Boom lengths varied from 37 to 110 m (120 to 360 ft). Bucket sizes varied from 5 to 96 m3 (6 to 115 cu yd). The hoist and drag ropes installed on the surveyed machines were supplied by 10 rope manufacturers and differed widely in type and construction. Most common rope strand constructions included standard strands, Seale, Warrington, Warrington-Seale and Filler-Seale. Results of the survey [ ] Working conditions Working conditions of hoist and drag ropes are quite different. The first cope primarily with bending on rope drums, point sheaves and deflection sheaves, and with tension force imposed by the bucket and its load. The drag ropes are exposed to severe abrasion at the pit crest, and to severe bending and crushing at fairleads, all while coping with tension forces imposed by resistance of the bucket to dragging. Bending of drag ropes at house rollers and at rope drums is of minor importance for their performance. Differences in working conditions result in different wear patterns, which make it feasible to install discarded hoist ropes to further serve as drag ropes. The hoist ropes wear primarily due to fatigue breaks of wires, while the drag ropes are subject to severe abrasion of outside wires, rope deformation and internal wire-strand breaking. The last is often indicated by the reduction of rope diameter. The summary of working conditions for the surveyed draglines is shown in Table 1. For simplicity, Table 1 does not include the data on rope bending at the fairleads, nor at the deflection rollers and house rollers. Similarly, Table 1 does not include the data on drag rope bending (other than that on the rope drum), as its influence on rope life is insignificant in view of severe abrasion and internal wear taking place elsewhere. However, the safety factors of the dragline ropes are lower, which requires them to carry relatively large tension forces. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulations require underground coal mine operators to dust their mine corridors with an inert material to prevent coal dust explosions. The most commonly used material is pulverized limestone. Current practice to determine compliance with MSHA regulations requires the coal mine foreman or an MSHA inspector to collect samples of the deposited dust, a mixture of coal dust and limestone rock dust, for above ground laboratory analysis. To expedite this process, the U.S. Bureau of Mines has developed two instruments to facilitate the inspection and rock dusting processes, the explosibility meter and float dust deposition meter. The explosibility meter is a hand-held instrument which provides an in situ measurement of the explosible nature of homogeneous mine dust samples. The float dust deposition meter measures the mass loading density of the top layer of coal or limestone dust deposited on the mine floor during mining operations by the ventilation air. It may also be used to automate trickle rock dusting equipment. The operation of each device is based on the difference in the optical reflectance between the light limestone dust and the dark coal dust. The principal of the explosibility meter is based on the observation that, for a fixed coal volatility, the optical reflectance of dust mixtures is relatively constant at the limit of flammability, and independent of the coal dust particle size.

Cost effectiveness in gold and silver leaching has centered mainly on reducing or preventing excessive use of lixiviants. In cyanide leaching practice, the active reactants, cyanide and oxygen, present different problems. The activity of cyanide may be adjusted at cost, but oxygen from air, has a fixed, low activity with an equilibrium concentration of ~7 ppm. Consequently, the use of air in agitation and heap leaching presents distinct kinetic problems. The refractory ores are either high consumers of oxygen or tend to immobilize dissolved precious metal-cyanide complexes. Commercial treatment of refractory ores involves oxidation by pressure leaching, roasting or biooxidation prior to cyanide leaching. Chemical reactions important in preoxidation of refractory sulfide ores by pressure leaching and biooxidation are considered. Major emphasis is given to the role of oxygen in heap leaching of oxidized ores.

The dispersion model of nonideal flow was applied to describe the hydrodynamic state within the flotation column. Residence time distribution (RTD) data of a laboratory flotation column were measured to determine the parameters of the model. The effects of operating variables and column geometry on the Peclet number which reflects the extent of axial dispersion were investigated and a semi-empirical expression of Pe was formulated. The dispersion model was validated for the column flotation of ultrafines coal. Under the conditions of sufficient aeration rate and frother addition, a good agreement between the measured recoveries and predicted data was obtained. The dispersion model with first-order flotation rate process of the flotation column developed in this study is useful in predicting the collection zone recovery of fine coal, and for the flotation column scale-up.

It is estimated that the volume of low -level and intermediate level contaminants present in the soil at different DOE sites is of the order of several million cubic feet. The existing remediation scheme is containerization followed by burial in Land Disposal Facilities (LDF's) which is economically unattractive warranting the need to develop alternate remediation routes. One such route is the physical separation based volume reduction approach to removing a MINIMUM AMOUNT OF CLEAN SOIL with the radioactive particles, reducing the amount of material that requires disposal. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and test the feasibility of using physical beneficiation techniques for removal of contaminants from soil. The performance criterion was to recover at least 80% of the activity in 20% or less of the original contaminated soil volume. Four different radioactively contaminated (primarily uranium and plutonium) soils from DoE sites namely LANL, INEL, Fernald Plant 1 Storage Pad (ID-B) and Mound soils were tested using gravity, magnetic, gravo-magnetic, hydrocyclonic and flotation devices. The paper is divided into the two sections. The first section presents the overview of the Heavy Metals in Contaminated Soil Treatability Project conducted at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) describing the salient features of a state-of-the art Soil Washing Laboratory and the technology equipments used in the test program. The second section describes the soil characterization and typical volume reduction results obtained from the UNR tests. Among the physical separation processes, only flotation processes passed the performance criterion. For the LANL and INEL soils where the contamination was contained in coarse particle size, it was possible to recover more than 80% of the activity in less than 10-20% of the original volume of the soil thus rendering 80-90% of the soil "clean". For Fernald and Mound soils where contamination was of colloidal nature, flotation based processes showed encouraging results and are recommended for further studies.

Sediment consolidation in highly flocculated suspensions occurs only if the self-weight of the material exceeds its compressive yield stress. A simple model for sediment densification is presented and applied to the simulation of thickener operations. Measured relationships between sediment self-weight and the extent of consolidation are used to establish underflow densities. Supernatant turbidity data provide the information necessary to predict overflow clarity. It is shown that thickener depth can play a role in determining solids-handling capacity as well as dewatering performance. The application of the model to the design and operation of full-scale thickeners is described.

Introduction The recent development of rare earth permanent magnets has revolutionized the field of magnetic separation. The advent of rare earth permanent magnets in the 1980s provided a magnetic product that was an order of magnitude stronger than that conventional ferrite magnets. This allowed for the design of high-intensity magnetic circuits that operated energy free and that surpassed electromagnets in the strength and effectiveness. New applications and design concepts that focused on the mineral and metal processing industries have evolved. This technology led to the development of various magnetic separators specifically designed for mineral processing applications. Applications that were not previously considered are now being used in primary mineral upgrading, recycling and secondary recovery. Historical perspective Lodestone was the first naturally occurring permanent magnetic material known. Lodstone was most likely used to upgrade iron ore by early civilizations. By the 1600s, the early magnet technology had advanced to quench-hardened iron-carbon alloys. The practical significance of magnetic separation was formally recognized in 1792 when an English patent was issued for separating iron ore by magnetic attraction. By today's standards, carbon steel is a very poor magnet material. It is easily demagnetized and has a very low energy product of much less than I MGOe (Million-Gauss-Oerstads). This was state-of-the-art technology for almost 300 years until chromium was added to magnet feedstock, which resulted in a three-fold increase in the energy product. The well documented addition of cobalt to permanent magnets in 1917 initiated the 30-year era of "Alnico" magnets that at the time provided a superior magnetic energy product. Since then, the science of magnetism has advanced rapidly and is now considered a highly developed branch of physics and material science. Permanent magnets have had an extremely long history. Figure 1 presents a chronology of permanent magnets that illustrates the increase in energy product. Amazing developments in material science have taken place in the last two decades. The gradual advancement of permanent magnet technology was shattered in 1967 with the initial development of samarium-cobalt (rare earth) magnets. Since that time, the advent of neodymium-boron-iron magnets provided such an increase in energy product that new design concepts were considered. New avenues of study were introduced by the complexities in the material science and physics involved in describing these new permanent magnets. Furthermore, applications for permanent magnets that were previously not considered were now viable. Rare earth elements Rare earth elements have claimed the attention of scientists for the past century. These elements were originally termed "rare" because they were thought to be quite scarce. Since then, however, geological studies have shown them to be relatively abundant. The discovery and identification of rare earth elements is complicated by the inherent difficulties in separating them from each other. The rare earth elements comprise the fifteen transition elements of Group IIIB, Period 6, of the periodic table. These elements extend from lanthanum to lutetium and are commonly called the lanthanide series. Samarium and neodymium are the two most common elements used in the commercial manufacture of rare earth permanent magnets. Commercial grade rare earth magnets There are only a few common types of rare earth magnets that are considered in the circuit design for magnetic separators. Early rare earth magnets of commercial significance (introduced in 1970) consisted of the first generation of sintered SmCo5. The energy product of these magnets ranged up to 23 MGOe, which provided the initial impetus to the field of high-energy permanent magnets. Although these magnets did not produce the extremely high magnetic field strengths of current rare earth magnets, they were relatively temperature stable. Containing 66% Co, they are the most expensive of the basic commercial rare earth permanent magnets. Their use is limited today because they are being replaced by second and third generation rare earth permanent magnets.

By oxidizing the pyrite matrix through biological leaching of precious metals ores or concentrates, better than 90% recovery of gold and silver is achieved. The paper develops three precipitation processes that eliminates arsenic and all other toxic elements in the resulting liquor after the biological reactors. In addition, the precipitates are highly crystalline and resist resolubilization. The latter must be tested for at least six months by EPA test procedures. The three systems are temperature (must be at least 120°C or higher) lime or limestone. A continuous pilot plant was employed for all three systems and complete recommendations are given to optimize Fe/As molar ratio, reaction kinetics (detention time) pH, temperature, wt % feed solids as well as resultant reagent consumption based upon continuous operation.

Cake filtration is a complex process and the cake constructure is very difficult to describe in theory. Cake constructure parameters, such as the cake prosity, pore size shape and even its distribution, are main factors influencing the filtration results but have not been thoroughly understood yet. In this paper the fractal theory, an effective mathematical method in describing the self-similar phenomenon is used to investigate the filter cake constructure, and the scanning electron microscope and automatic image analyzer are used to measure the cake constructure. Cakes which formed in different condition are examined and the fractal dimension of the cake are calculated. The study shows that the constructure of the filter cake can be approximated by Sierpinski fractal geometry and that the fractal dimension of filter cake, related to the particle characteristics, slurry concentration and filtration pressure is a good parameter to describe the pore size distribution and the cake penetrability.

Surface analysis by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) of samples taken from the galena flotation section of the Hilton Concentrator of Mount Isa Mines Limited are presented. Flotation rate and pulp chemical data taken during the sampling period are also presented and discussed. Surface analysis suggested that, under normal operating conditions, an overlayer of precipitated calcium sulfate existed at the surface of the sulfide minerals. In particular, there was a decrease in the surface concentration of calcium sulfate for the concentrate samples relative to that occurring on the tailing samples. This suggests that the flotation process was selective against minerals which have calcium sulfate predominating at the surface. Heterocoagulation of hydrophilic calcium sulfate on to the galena surface considerably reduced galena flotation rate. Methods to control calcium sulfate precipitation, which include sodium carbonate treatment of the pulp, are also discussed. Sur- face analysis results of samples taken from the Hilton Concentrator during sodium carbonate addition to the grinding circuit are also presented. This shows clear evidence for the removal of calcium sulfate from the mineral surfaces without concomitant surface precipitation of calcium carbonate. Reasons for the apparent dispersion of precipitated calcium carbonate are discussed. Galena flotation rate was increased by the addition of sodium carbonate apparently due to the removal of interfering calcium sulfate.

A brittle solid broken by crushing or impact, results in a mass size distribution curve having a straight line segment when plotted on log-log paper. Depending on the mineral, the slope of this straight line segment ranges from a maximum of one for materials like glass and quartz to values of one half or less. Theoretical derivations of the size distribution, such as the Gaudin-Meloy model, yield a slope of one and only one. When the Gaudin-Meloy model is modified to assume that not all cracks terminate on a preexisting surface, the new model predicts that size distribution slopes, depending on the type of brittle solid, will be less than one. There is a measurable physical parameter that will predict the slope. In addition the model predicts that particles from such a size distributions will have negative corners and peaks - indentations. Moreover the model predicts that particle shape will systematically change with decreasing particle size. Finally, this new physical model of comminution may be experimentally tested.
