The mining industry’s image is molded by what the public knows, or thinks it knows about mining. As Caterpillar prepared for the production of its educational video, Common Ground, the public’s perceptions about mining needed to be established. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As those perceptions were analyzed, we were able to narrow the video’s focus to relevant, realistic approaches. We found out what people did not know about mining. And, most importantly, facts they should know were singled out - facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in the final direction of the Common Ground project. What the public believes As these perceptions about mining were researched, it was found that the beliefs of the general public are dominated by four concepts. Quotations from interviewees are included with the discussion of each of these concepts. Figure 1 shows an overview of people’s beliefs before education.

Environmental regulation in Mexico has matured dramatically and effectively in the last decade. The gap between environmental regulation in the United States and Mexico is rapidly narrowing. From a regulatory perspective, it is no longer necessarily less burdensome to operate in Mexico. Principal laws and regulations Mexico has two principal environmental regulatory systems. The first consists of the laws and regulations governing domestic activities. The second consists of the treaties, agreements and understandings between the United States and Mexico dealing with transboundary pollution and maquiladoras (see Maquiladora Decree, next column). The following are the principal major laws and regulations governing environmental protection in Mexico: General Law: The General Law on Ecological Balance and Protection of the Environment, effective March 1, 1988. Water Regulations: Regulations for the Prevention and Control of Water Pollution, effective May 29, 1973. The Yarnell gold deposit is located 1.5 km (1 mile) south of Yarnell in the Weaver mining district of Yavapai County, AZ (Fig. 1). Elevations within the area of the deposit range from 1400 to 1560 m (4590 to 5120 ft). Historic production, principally from quartz veins localized along the Yarnell fault, was about 200 kt (220,000 st) at an average grade of 6.9 to 10.3 g/t (0.2 to 0.3 oz/st) gold. The federal government closed the mine in 1942 due to World War II. Norgold Resources Inc. leased the property in 1988 and joint ventured it with Asarco the same year. Asarco drilled 7822 m (25,660 ft) in 96 reverse circulation and four diamond drill holes and identified 8 t (260,000 oz) gold reserve. IBema Gold Inc. acquired Norgold in 1991 and is currently permitting the project. Production is expected to begin within the next two years

Coal production in the in the Powder River Basin began its tremendous expansion during the boom of the mid-1970s. New mines were opened from 1976 through the early 1980s. This expansion soon placed Wyoming at the top of the list of coal producing states, where it has since remained. Mines are operated by large companies, with safety and production having equal priority. These mines have been some of the safest ever in the coal industry. Many Sentinels of Safety Awards have gone to them. Safety programs are varied, but there are commonalities. Mine safety at Wyodak Extra training is required of all supervisors. The company offers to pay for any additional first-aid training that employees participate in. Safety departments conduct weekly safety talks. All employees receive the monthly magazine Family Safety and Health compliments of Wyodak. Electricians receive extra training on electric wheel motors, from General Electric. Equipment operators receive extra training from Dresser.

A.C. Noble presents a clear and concise summary of the factors pertinent to a competent reserve evaluation of a mineral occurrence. However, I believe that he confuses the difference between a resource and a reserve. By definition, a reserve estimate includes all known economic, legal, mining, metallurgical and environmental factors impacting the recovery of the product(s) found in the deposit. A resource estimate, however, is an estimate of what is there - what is available for exploitation and should not include economic and other considerations. Only after defining the resource, its extent, location, physical and chemical properties, can an intelligent selection process begin of the extraction and processing technologies most appropriate to the circumstances encountered. The early and almost certainly inappropriate application of these often cookbook choices has probably lead many companies to walk away from good properties. (How many mines have been found in others rejects?) An example of the process is the early selection of metallurgical samples, after encouraging values are found in a few holes or surface samples, in an attempt to determine the economics of the prospect. Unfortunately, the sampler does not know how representative of the occurrence the sample is because he does not know what the deposit looks like. As a consequence, the property becomes saddled with a bad metallurgical sample that is often inappropriately used in evaluating the deposit which it does not represent.

The production of oxygen on the Moon utilizing indigenous materials will be essential for successful lunar colonization. Several processes have been put forth to accomplish Lunar Liquid Oxygen (LLOX) generation. The schemes that have received the most study to date involve: 1) Reduction of ilmenite (FeTi03) by H2, CO, CH4, CO-Cl2 and Cl2, plasma. 2) Molten silicate electrolysis, both unadulterated and fluoride fluxed. 3) Several others, including H, reduction of glass, carbo-chlorination, HF acid leaching, fluorine extraction, magma oxidation, and vapor pyrolysis. The H2 reduction of ilmenite and molten silicate electrolysis processes have received the most study to date. They are both feasible schemes and have various pros and cons, including their feedstock requirements. However, all processes should be addressed at the onset of LLOX research. This paper reviews several of the most studied and feasible processes for winning oxygen front lunar materials. There is an obvious need for more experimentation and study.

Sandstone escarpments surrounding western coal-bearing plateaus serve as critical habitat for animal species. Effects of mining subsidence on escarpment stability are not well documented; therefore, regulatory agencies may limit extraction of coal reserves underlying escarpments. Because millions of tons of this coal exist on Federal Lands, associated public revenues from Federal royalties, and valuable coal reserves, risk being lost. The U. S. Bureau of Mines is using numerical modeling techniques to analyze effects of subsidence on escarpment stability. Finite element models that incorporate bedding plane slip, gob formation, and movement along joints simulate escarpment subsidence observed in the field.

There is a large economic opportunity associated with improving metallurgical performance in mineral processing plants that use process control. Thus, future control systems will be developed towards more sophisticated user friendly, computer-based systems that use powerful software analysis and control techniques. Auto-tuning, adaptive control and process models will gain expanded use because of their transparent availability to the system designer. Control of individual unit operations will be optimized and coordinated through expert systems that monitor economic conditions and management directives and direct operations accordingly. Plant areas, once considered cost centers, will be integrated into plant-wide control systems for economic control and optimization. This article looks at new control hardware, process sensors, control strategies and software development tools. It also looks at the economics driving the continued development of advanced process control systems. Process control systems routinely used in the mining industry were born when the microprocessor was invented. They have continued along an evolutionary path from vendor specific processing hardware and proprietary operating systems to computer industry standard "open architecture" systems. The many economic forces that drive the development and functionality of these process control systems will cause this evolutionary process to continue. Eastern US oil shale contains approximately 10 to 12 gallons of oil per ton and 7 to 10% pyritic sulfur. Physical beneficiation of these low grade shales using froth flotation provides a high grade material that makes extraction of oil more economically attractive. The Alabama oil shale used in the present study contained 16.46% organic carbon and 14.5 gallons of oil per ton as determined by Fischer assay. Liberation size of the kerogen was estimated at 10 µm. `Ken-Flote' column flotation technology provided a high grade concentrate containing as much as 60% organic carbon. However, carbon recovery was about 60%. Carbon recovery was improved to 75-85% while maintaining concentrate grades in excess of 40% carbon by providing longer retention time in the column, which facilitated effective bubble-particle collision and attachment.

Recovery of phosphate concentrate at Texasgulf’s Aurora Mine has received increased attention as existing mine and plant production capacity limits are reached. Improved mining techniques and mineral processing of waste streams offer the potential to increase phosphate production without major expansion. Innovative processes are being identified to maximize pit mining recovery and to minimize waste stream losses. This results in more effective use of the phosphate. Texasgulf Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Elf Aquitaine. The Aurora phosphate rock mine and refining facilities are located in North Carolina on the south shore of the Pamlico Sound. Phosphate ore is recovered by open- cast mining techniques. Draglines and other earthmoving equipment are used to uncover and mine the phosphate ore. The mined ore then is slurried and pumped about 8 km (5 miles) to the processing plant.

Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. Lucerne Valley California operation is one of the largest producers of high brightness high purity fme grind limestone products in western North America. The San Bernardino Mountains area of southern California contains the largest high brightness, high purity limestone mining operations and undeveloped reserves in western North America (Fig. 1, Brown 1987). Combined annual production of high brightness limestone products from several operations is approximately 1.5 million tons, with an estimated gross value of $75 million dollars per year (Fig. 2). An additional 5.0 million tons of cement grade limestone is mined by several large cement producers in the nearby Mojave area (Brown, in press). The purpose of this paper is to summarize the geologic setting, genesis and mining of white, high purity crystalline limestone by Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc.

The principles of classification of reserves and resources in the Soviet Union were developed in 1960. Mineral reserve calculations were reviewed by the State Committee on Reserves for approval, then registered in the State List of Mineral Deposits and included in the State Balance of the Reserves. In 1981, however, a new "System of Classification of Reserves and Resources of Mineral Deposits" was adopted. This classification system (Table 1) is still used today in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It subdivides mineral concentrations into seven categories in three major groups, based on the level of exploration performed: explored reserves (A, B, C,), evaluated reserves (C) and prognostic resources (P1, P2, P3). Explored reserves Explored reserves are calculated within exploration contours. Category A The A category is the highest level of classification for any given mineral deposit and requires comprehensive exploration. First, the ore body's position, shape and structure must be accurately delineated (Fig. 1). Next, the mineralogy of the ore body must be studied to determine its composition and properties as well as the distribution of both ore and detrimental components. It is also necessary to outline the blocks of barren rocks and limits of subeconomic ores and to distinguish between the different types, grades and physical-chemical properties (mineral texture and structure) of the ore, the

Mining, perhaps more than other industries, has been under pressure to achieve higher productivity, while reducing costs and environmental impacts. This has encouraged a move toward large-scale operations and greater integration and automation of systems. Mechanization is being used increasingly to raise production and reduce labor requirements. Yet, while transportation, ventilation and other activities have benefited from this trend, mechanization of rock excavation (for development and production) has lagged. The switch to a mechanized excavation system can be complex, requiring a thorough study of operational and cost benefits to be successful. To justify the high capital cost of mechanical mining equipment, production rates and the true costs of machine mining must be accurately estimated. To evaluate the cost effectiveness of mechanical mining for a particular operation, the total production cost (capital and operating) must first be estimated. This requires a reliable estimate of the production rate of the candidate mechanical excavator. Previously, the variable nature of rock caused performance prediction of these machines to be more an art than a science. Additionally, some of these machines are highly sensitive to operator skill. They all depend on their backup systems. The effects of interaction with the overall mining operation can be difficult to forecast. And a new system must surmount psychological barriers before it can become truly operational.

The fire at Wilberg Mine in 1984 reached the surface resulting in the failure of the vertical ledge forming the roof and entrance for three main intake portals. The fallen material was covered with a concrete cap to seal the air from the mine. As the mine was recovered and ventilation pressure was placed on seals on the perimeter of the fire area, the concrete capped rubble proved ineffective. Due to the steep and rugged terrain and the inaccessibility to the portals from underground, horizontal holes were drilled into the portal entries and three seals were placed remotely. The seals, in conjunction with pressure balancing the seals around the perimeter of the fire area, resulted in the control of the mine fire.

Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). Flotation columns are widely used in mineral processing and coal preparation industry today. Mathematical modeling of flotation columns has conventionally been done using axial dispersion or tank-in-series models. However, for design and scale up purposes these models are not adequate enough because they do not provide detailed information of the flow fields within the column. This paper presents a Two-Dimensional, Two-Phase. Fluid-dynamic Model and its numerical solutions for some cases encountered in column flotation. The MAC (Marker and Cell) method was employed to obtain the numerical solutions, and based on this method a computer code COLUMNFLOW was developed. The simulated flow field reveals the presence of a circulation flow structure in flotation columns, which could be one of the main reasons for mixing in column flotation. The effects of some parameters such as superficial gas and liquid velocities on the characteristics of the flow structure in flotation columns were also tested with the numerical model.

Discussion by P. Malozemoff I have no objection to using mathematics in the value appraisal of properties. The factor that is not emphasized in the paper is that very few important properties have a lifetime that reflects the initial ore reserves of the property divided by the rate of production adopted. In the majority of cases, major properties mine out several times the initial reserves. How much more will be mined out is not known, and only exceptionally gifted geologists can predict that additional reserves will be found. There is the further factor of metals price, which, over the long term, is not predictable. Another factor vitiating making calculations on initially established ore reserves is the speculative nature of exploration success. In my judgment, the life of a property, in addition to an established ore reserve, should include ample time for exploration to find additional reserves. The likelihood of additional reserves is based on the geological promise of the general area where the mine is established. This is especially important because of various risk factors associated with small orebodies, the economic life of which is about five to seven years. In underground mines, it is not economic to develop reserves beyond a certain depth, so the life of initially established reserves must be limited. In these cases, it is especially important to have a good geological understanding of the orebody and its continuity. To accommodate these concepts and present proof of economic soundness for a mining enterprise, a mathematical analysis should yield a life long enough to allow exploration and the development of additional reserves that would ensure a longer mine life and a more profitable result.
