INTRODUCTION Interest in the recovery of methane from coalbeds has increased rapidly over recent years, because of its potential as an energy resource and to alleviate pollution and safety problems. The resource base of coalbed methane in the United States has been estimated at 11.2 Gm3, roughly equivalent to 20 years consumption (Mroz et al., 1983; Kuuskraa and Brandenburg, 1989). Methane contributes to the adverse environmental impacts of global warming, tropospheric ozone formation (smog), and potentially stratospheric ozone destruction. Association of methane with coal has always presented a safety problem in mines due to the potential for explosions. The rate of release of methane depends on the amount adsorbed by the coal, the adsorption isotherm for the coal, and the size of the coal particles. Mining operations can affect the particle size distribution and the production of fines and therefore the rate of release. The time the mined coal remains in the mine may also be important in determining total emissions. The methane content of some Utah coals was determined in this study. The methane content of the coals is compared with the chemical and physical properties of the coals and the properties of the seam and neighboring strata. Correlations are developed to better understand the formation and retention of methane by these coal seams. METHANE FORMATION IN COALBEDS Three mechanisms for methane formation may be considered: (1) nonbiogenic formation, (2) formation by anaerobic bacteria during plant material deposition and the early stages of diagenesis, and (3) formation from pyrolysis of coal material during coal maturation. Nonbiogenic formation by thermal processes involving carbon- and hydrogen-containing compounds has been proposed as a mechanism for methane formation in the earth. It is not likely to be of importance where other fossil fuel materials are present. Coal would not survive the temperatures required and hence the methane would need to migrate and be trapped by the coal seam. This mechanism is unlikely for coalbed methane. Formation of methane by anaerobic bacteria undoubtedly occurs during coalification, but the methane may not be trapped until the pore system of the coal is developed, and would likely be displaced by methane formed during further coalification. Methane formed by maturation of the coal material as it progresses from peat to coals of various rank is the most probable mechanism for the formation of coalbed methane. Most of the methane is adsorbed onto the walls of microvoids in coal. It has been estimated that the surface area of one kilogram of coal is between 20,000 m2 to 200,000 m2. Surface area measurements depend on the coal and also on the method of measurement. At 20 atmospheres, in some coals, the adsorbed methane is 10 times greater than methane as a free gas. At 100 atmospheres the adsorbed gas can be as densely packed as a liquid. The volume of methane gas held in coal depends on the volume of gas that exists as a free gas and the adsorbed gas capacity. The volume of free gas in the coal can be calculated from the kinetic theory of gases (methane can be assumed to be an ideal gas because errors would not be greater than 1 % for normal mining pressures). Langmuir (1916) derived an equation for the adsorption of gases on uniform surfaces and this is applied to the adsorption of methane on coal:

In recent years, there has been an increasing use of two-pass tunnel lining system consisting of segmental unbolted expandable precast concrete initial lining and cast-in¬place concrete final lining in the United States. Used so far in soft ground tunneling performed under free air, it often includes a waterproofing or gasproofing membrane placed between the initial and final linings. This paper describes the utilization of this two-pass system for an extension of the Baltimore Metro, constructed in part under compressed air. It offers a description of the extension project, known as Section C; addresses the tunnel lining selection process and the design of the lining elements; examines the effect of the adopted lining system and tunneling technique on the design of the project's major structural components; and describes design modification instructions in order to accommodate constantly changing field conditions.

The situation of Japanes coal mine is in the severe enviroment, because the policy on coal mining has changed. Every year one or two coal mines will be foced to close. To continue the production of coal, we have to reduce the cost of production. Therefore, the mining by longwall method which is more than 250m was attempted at Taiheiyou Coal Mine to reduce the cost and this mining method have had successful results. To get successful results by this mining method, the controlling and prediction of gas emission from the longwall panel will be most important things. In this paper, the comparison of the predicted gas emission from the mining panel based on the measured gas content by using new device with the observed results is described.

Maintaining intake escapeways clear of contaminants from mine fires has been an issue for many years. Removing fire sources from these entries reduces the risk of contamination greatly. In recent years, concerns have been raised related to contamination of the intake escapeways by leakage when fires occur in adjacent airways. This paper discusses measured leakage rates for multiple stoppings at various pressure drops across stopping lines in a number of actual coal mines. Also addressed are methods for reducing the contamination risks for the intake escapeways, considering the ventilation system employed. The Effects of Air Leakage The effects of air leakage through ventilation controls has been well documented. While normal leakage is expected through stoppings, overcasts and other structures, abnormally high leakage results in an inefficient ventilation system and can increase operational costs for a mine. In addition, excessive leakage results in less control over mine ventilation airsplits. This may compromise the isolation of mine escapeways, and allow adjacent entries to be rapidly contaminated by products of combustion in the event of a mine fire. A study was conducted at ten mines in which air pressure and quantity measurements were taken near the active sections. The method used to construct the ventilation controls to separate airways was also noted. Stopping Construction Table 1 shows the type of stopping construction commonly used in the 10 mines included in this study. Main entry stoppings were normally built with mortared joints (wet stacked) with sealant applied to the high pressure side of the stopping. In most cases the entire face of the stoppings were sealed. In one case only the joints between blocks were sealed but the perimeters were sealed in all cases. Some mines also sealed the low pressure side of the stopping. Solid blocks were normally used for main entry construction and hollow blocks were sometimes used for longwall panel development. [ ]

This is the 12th year for this column and the 11th in which the royalty data have been tabulated. This year adds 20 to 30 new entries. There are, however, some deficiencies that the readership hopefully will fill. The most common mineral commodity is construction aggregates - either sand and gravel or crushed stone. There are several states where no royalty information was available for either commodity. Readers can help share information about these missing states, so next year there will be fewer states without information. Severn Brown again sent helpful information from the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC). The summer 1992 issue of PDAC Digest recommended"... the most useful technical paper ever published for economic geologists...." "Net smelter return models and their use in the exploration, evaluation and exploitation of polymetallic deposits" was written by R. Goldie and P. Tredger (Geoscience Canada, Vol. 18, No. 4, pp. 159-171). Last year's column described leasing practices in Russia. Some new information has been gathered since then. Kirill Kavun is the managing director of the International Geoeconomic Center in Moscow. He sent two publications from 1992-"Regulation on the procedure of licensing the use of the subsurface," and "Law of the Russian federation on the subsurface." Both are supplements to the magazine Mineral Re¬sources of Russia, Economics and Management.

Erratic behavior in convergency during iterative numerical-method evaluation of mine ventilation fan characteristic curves is one of the common problems encountered in mine ventilation network analysis. Five different sets of mine fan data points, that had resulted in unsatisfactory fan characteristic curves, were re-analyzed in the present study, using an embedded mine network optimization computer program. Current results revealed that all five fan data sets not only can be satisfactorily fitted as Yang (1992) did with MFIRE subprogram, but can further be optimized with unique solutions as implemented in the present study. It was concluded, inter alia, that the improved MFIRE-based mine fan curve-fitting computer subprogram (SPLINE) produces satisfactorily similar fan curves as SPSS-based curve-fitting algorithms, including when the latter method uses either standardized or unstandardized fan curve data sets.

Adsorption of sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) and dodecylaminium hydrochloride (DAH) on Buller seam coal, New Zealand, have been studied. Both surfactants adsorb effectively on the coal below pH 8, and the adsorption isotherms established at pH 4 are essentially the same at lower concentrations. These findings suggest that the adsorption of these two ionic surfactants on coal is controlled by a hydrophobic bonding mechanism. However, the results of calorimetric studies suggest that coulombic attraction also plays a part in the adsorption mechanisms. It has also been found that both the SDS and DAH adsorbed in the first monolayer are not removed by lowering the surfactant concentrations in the bulk solution.

The objective of this US Bureau of Mines (Bureau) research was to determine the technical feasibility, principles and effectiveness of a combination energy method for drilling and cutting hard rocks. Experimental test results of microwave heating and drilling in basalt and granodiorite are given. The experiments were performed with pilot-scale, commercially available equipment employing microwave energy at a standard industrial frequency of 2.45 GHz. The data indicate that penetration rates, well in excess of the state of the art, are possible.

When limestone (Ca03) is calcined in rotary kilns to produce quicklime (CaO), it is not unusual for 10% to 20% of the stone to abrade and emerge from the kiln as quicklime fines (-6.3 mm or -0.25 in.). While there are various industrial processes that can use fines, handling and shipping is tricky and dangerous. Due to the highly caustic nature of quicklime, airborne dust easily bums eyes and skin. On the other hand, money has already been invested in mining (or buying) the raw material and in the equipment and energy needed for calcining. Discarding the fines will not only waste that investment, but add even more cost in transportation and possibly dumping charges. So the question becomes, how can fines best be turned into a revenue-generating asset? Some plants convert leftover quick-lime fines into calcium hydroxide - Ca(OH)2, also known as hydrated or water-slaked lime - for sale into agricultural applications. For farm uses, hydrated lime fines are preferred over quicklime because they are easier to handle. And they are favored over raw limestone fines for their higher concentration of calcium and greater solubil¬ity. From the producer's viewpoint, quicklime fines are ideal for this use because they go through hydration faster than the larger chunks of quicklime. Those larger chunks, or "pebble lime," are more readily salable and more easily handled, for such uses as steel, copper, aluminum and magnesium production, water waste treatment, chemical, paper, glassmaking and flue gas desulfurization in coal- fired boilers.

Many long conveyors, 2 - 20 km plus, have been installed over the past 10 years. Conveyor belt life, depending on the conveyor length and material handled, will generally range from 10 - 15 years. To replace long conveyors splicing one or two rolls into a conveyor run on an intermittent basis can be prolonged in an operating system involving considerable downtime and scheduling problems. This paper presents some of the methods used to- date and highlights forward planning for such an event. Special belt handling equipment required and the execution of a belt change operation are described in detail. Wright Engineers Limited have worked in collaboration with Canada Conveyor to design and implement the methods described herein.

In cold regions rinsing of spent cyanide leach heaps is stopped during winter and is resumed again after snow melts. The effect of this idle time on the overall cyanide removal process was studied in this work. Samples were collected for rinsing tests from one heap at the Ryan Lode Mine of Citigold Alaska, Inc., near Fairbanks. The material was tested for cyanide removal a large column, 1.22 m high by 20 cm square, and in a small column, 1.22 m high by 10 cm in diameter. The rinse water was analyzed at regular intervals to determine the rate of cyanide removal from the solids. It was found that diffusion plays a major role in the removal of cyanide from the ore particles. Calculations showed that the insulating effect of the snow cover on the heap provides an excellent moderates the interior temperature of the heap, and would be expected to help the progress of the diffusion reaction during winter. The result expected result wil1 be higher cyanide values reporting to the rinse water after snow-melt.

Recent work to upgrade the ventilation system for the el Mochito lead/zinc mine in central Honduras is discussed. Network modeling and underground measurements were used to evaluate cost-effective alternatives for achieving satisfactory ventilation in a complex and expanding underground operation. Both interim and long-term solutions were implemented to make mining possible under difficult conditions. INTRODUCTION Mining operations at the el Mochito Mine, located in the central highlands of Honduras, Central America, have been virtually continuous since the opening of the mine in 1948. Initially a high-grade silver mine, the mine has expanded along a westward trend of pipe-like orebodies to a distance of roughly one mile from two centrally located shafts. Production of the relatively large San Juan orebody at the western most extension of the mine (Paddock, 1981) led to the introduction of diesel-powered equipment; however, the ventilation infrastructure was insufficient to meet the needs of mechanized mining. A succession of owners/operators in the 1980s allowed the existing ventilation infrastructure to decay to the point that ventilation in the production areas of the mine was very poor. Environmental conditions in some working areas were not conducive to efficient ore extraction because of high dry bulb temperature, high humidity, and diesel emissions. Upon acquiring the mine in 1990, Breakwater Resources of Tucson, Arizona began an aggressive program to refurbish the mine infrastructure to complete extraction of the San Juan orebody and to allow the extension of the mine another 2500 ft to the west for extraction of the Nacional orebody. The program included increasing the capacity of the main ventilation system. This article presents a case history of the process of upgrading the ventilation system in a mine where extensive old workings cause large air leakage. This process has been one of selecting solutions to difficult technical problems that are compatible with the existing mine infrastructure and economic constraints. The initial ventilation system is described in the background section, along with ventilation projections for the mine expansion. Field characterization of the ventilation system for design verification and fan specification is then discussed. The paper describes a series of interim changes to the system to improve ventilation pending completion of new ventilation boreholes. In addition, the temperature/ heat problems in the mine are described. BACKGROUND Initial Condition of Ventilation System The ventilation system is illustrated in Figure 1, which shows the extent of mining with the main ventilation paths superimposed. Early mining around the two shafts opened up vertical connections (stopes and raises) over the entire 2420 ft (737.6 m) of vertical extent, and mining progressed to the west primarily using compressed air and electric-powered equipment. Since ventilation was not a complex problem in the original mining system, the stopes and interconnecting raises were not sealed. The San Juan orebody was much larger than the silver ore zones mined previously, being primarily zinc and other base metals. Its geometry, size, and grade allowed the use of vertical crater retreat (VCR) stoping with diesel mucking and haulage equipment. Its depth, along with the existence of warm groundwater, resulted in a mine climate problem on the lower levels. To establish a complete ventilation circuit, two vertical boreholes (Bonanza Nos. 1 and 2) had been drilled by previous owners from the surface in the vicinity of the San Juan orebody. The system design called for air to be drawn down the intake shafts, across the lower mine levels to the San Juan workings, then up through the San Juan ramps and ore passes to these two exhaust boreholes (see Figure 1). In practice, however, only the Bonanza No. 1 borehole was drawing air through the desired path. Leakage across the old upper levels from the intake shafts, the Caliche tunnel, and from intervening abandoned stopes and raises supplied most of the air flowing to the base of the Bonanza No. 2 borehole. In effect, there were two ventilation circuits in semi-parallel through the mine, of which only one was delivering appreciable air to the San Juan workings.

Groundwater Monitoring is typically required by regulatory agencies at potentially hazardous landfills or surface impoundments. Agencies have often required an arbitrary number of wells with limited evaluation of the effectiveness of the network to detect a leak. A Monitoring Efficiency Model (MEMO) has been developed to improve the design and cost effectiveness of monitoring well networks. MEMO 15 an analytical model that simulates the migration of hypothetical contaminant plumes from a site and quantifies the efficiency of alternative well network designs in detecting the plumes. The computed monitoring efficiency provides a quantitative measure of the well network adequacy based on hydrogeologic considerations. The model was recently used to design the groundwater monitoring well network for a heap leach pad at the proposed Beartrack Project.

The research laboratory of B.U.S Engitec has identified and patented a new process for electrolytic production of lead from lead sulphide concentrates with simultaneous production of elementary sulphur. The process occurs in an aqueous solution, at atmospheric pressure, utilizing a solution of ferric fluoroborate in fluoroboric acid as the oxidizing and solubilizing medium for lead sulphide. After the filtration and separation of a residue composed of elementary sulphur and the gangue which accompanied the concentrate, the solution containing lead as fluoroborate and iron reduced to a ferrous state is sent to a diaphragm electrolytic cell where, in the cathode compartment, the lead is deposited in a compact form on the stainless steel permanent blank. The exhaust solution stripped of lead is sent to the anode compartment where the oxidation of ferrous fluoroborate into ferric fluoroboratetakes place, reproducing the oxidizing solution for new leaching. Depending on operating conditions, it is possible to selectively solubilize the lead from the other metal values present in the concentrate. The sulphur produced from the reaction may be separated from the gangue by extraction with solvent or by flotation.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. Congress, under the Nuclear Waste Policy Act of 1982, as amended, charged the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) with the responsibility for safe and permanent disposal of high-level radioactive waste in a geologic repository. The waste will consist of spent fuel from commercial nuclear generating plants and reprocessing activities. Under direction of this law DOE is currently evaluating Yucca Mountain in Southern Nevada as the candidate site for a potential high-level radioactive waste repository. Presidential, Congressional and State of Nevada approval are needed for repository construction to proceed after successful completion of site characterization and recommendation of the site to Congress. The DOE will submit a license application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to construct the geologic repository. Following successful construction DOE will update its license application to operate the repository.

Introduction Flotation is a recovery process that utilizes natural or chemically-introduced hydrophobicity of minerals to separate ore from gangue by attaching the ore particles to bubbles. Flotation has been known since 1906, when it was patented by E. L. Sulman, H. G. K. Pickard and John Ballot. Flotation's first documented plant use was in 1911, when it was used on gravity tailings from a zinc plant. Cyanide leaching was first patented in 1887. Most early precious metals flotation was linked to lead or copper concentrates. Most precious metal flotation is linked to sulfide recovery and utilizes such reagents as xanthates, dithiophosphates and thiocarbanilides. But the involvement of flotation in precious metals recovery does not have to be limited to active flotation of the gold and silver bearing minerals. Flotation can be used to remove interfering minerals, such as carbon, or cyanicides, such as copper, arsenic bearing minerals or other cyanide complexing minerals. Cyanide Leaching The use of cyanide to recover precious metals is the backbone of the industry. The various recovery processes that use cyanide are: 1. Leaching-Counter Current Decantation(CCD) Merrill-Crowe 2. Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) 3. Carbon-in-leach (CIL) 4. Vat leaching 5. Heap leaching These processes are selected depending on ore grade, ore leaching characteristics, reserve size and capital limitations. Ore grade is used as the first criteria to determine the type of cyanide plant required. However, the reserve size can determine whether a ground ore alternative is used. The ore leaching characteristics may indicate that the higher recovery, associated with a process that employs grinding, is the only economic recovery alternative. There are some extremely large leaching plants with grades that would be non-economic for some existing heap leach plants. Many factors, such as strip ratios, metal recovery and reserve size, determine what the ultimate plant design will be. The exact processing scheme that is used, is a multifaceted decision matrix, which gives the process metallurgist some job security. Precious Metal Recovery Using Flotation Flotation recovery can conceivably be used on any ore that has been ground. Many operations utilize gravity separation on the ore to remove native gold from the ore prior to sending it to cyanide leaching. Size reduction is very energy intensive and is the single most power-intensive operation in mineral processing plants. Research has shown that only a small part of the energy is utilized efficiently. One of the major thrusts of all equipment manufacturers has been to improve this efficiency. Choosing the right equipment to maximize energy utilization in any comminution application has always been the utmost criteria. Due to the high energy cost and depletion of good grade minerals, it is becoming essential to optimize all the subsystems within a given comminution system for the overall economic success of such ventures. Bradley Pulverizer Company of Allentown, Pennsylvania recognized this and started offering its Feeder Controller in 1988 for automatic feed control. After its first successful operation, Bradley made this as a part of all of their grinding system standard offering. It was also recognized that the Feeder Controller was just a beginning and more automation and controls would be required for an overall, efficient grinding system.

Mining claims must have a discovery of a valuable mineral deposit to be valid. When required, a Federal government mineral examiner makes a determination of validity and recommendations thereof to authorized management officials. The examiner should show whether or not an existing mining operation, or a proposed operation have economic viability. This is accomplished through an analysis of legal entities, land status and use, geologic and mineralogic relationships, and mining, milling and processing techniques considered in an appropriate economic evaluation framework. A framework involves market and market entry studies, reserve analyses, all costs analysis, royalty buyouts, tax structure, discount rate of return, and escalation and risk factors. An income approach to value is then used by means of a simple or complex discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to certify validity. Whether one claim is owned by a single miner, or hundreds of claims are owned by a large corporation, thorough, fair, consistent, and appropriate economic concepts should be applied by the mineral examiner.
