This is essential for a fair, unbiased economic compari¬son of the candidate systems. Coal is our most abundant, low cost energy resource. Expansion of its use is being challenged due to "SO2 emission" regulation with even more restrictive legislation pending. High quality coal reserves are becoming more limited due to greater use in recent years. Aids to allow more use of coal in today's environment include beneficiation of coal before combustion and scrubbing the emissions from coal during combustion. Dow's efforts to help meet these challenges by beneficiating coal include true heavy media gravity separations with chlorinated solvents and liquid/liquid partitioning processes and "Dow Solvent Recovery Technology" to recover the solvent from product (or floats) and rejects (sinks), The objectives of the efforts to clean coal are to reduce sulfur and ash. In this paper, the solvents will be described; a general flow diagram presented; some of the results on upgrading various coals will be described, and projected costs of full-scale plants using chlorinated solvents will be compared to conventional cleaning plants.

The use of computerized steady-state process design balance systems has reduced engineering man-hours by as much as 80 to 1 over conventional manual balance calculations. The popularity and widespread use of such systems by the minerals industry increased dramatically in recent years, but these systems were mainly available for use on large main frame computers and lacked graphic capability. A considerable amount of engineering manpower was required to "conceptualize" a process flowsheet. After sketching the flowsheet layout, the engineer was still faced in most cases with a time-consuming reduction of his graphic concept of the problem to numerical data required by the balance program. Furthermore, output from these early systems was usually in tabular numeric form. The computer results then were transferred manually to a pictorial representation of the process. A new process design balance system has been developed which runs on a popular and inexpensive personal computer. This system combines modern Computer Aided Design (CAD) principles and the graphics capabilities of the personal computer to allow the process engineer to define a flowsheet problem while creating a process flow diagram. The system provides balance results in both pictorial and tabular form. Past, present, and potential applications of the system are discussed, and an analysis of the cost benefits derived from its use are provided.

The process of treating granular activated carbon for return to service in the recovery of gold in Carbon in Pulp and Carbon in Leach circuits has been investigated. Carbons from four U.S.A. mines, one Canadian mine and one South African mine were characterized before and after regeneration. The use of thermal gravimetric analyses demonstrated the presence of inorganic compounds on the surface of the carbon. Thermal regeneration was investigated using factorial' analysis to determine the effect or interaction of furnace temperature, retention time and the use of supplemental steam. The operation of acid leaching prior to or after gold elution was investigated. The effect of water quenching, regenerated carbon was also studied. From the data obtained in this investigation, guidelines are given for effective regeneration operation.

Much as the Mining transportation Executives right have wished for coal and other mineral deposits to be found along navigable rivers, where railroads have for years been competing with the very aggressive Army Corps of Engineers and the inland waterway operators, the mineable reserves are more often that not located in the arid west far from these "free" waterways. The rivers cannot go to the mines but the railroads could, did, and continue to invest it new lines to reach new mines. The mining industry and the railroad industry have good reason to rely upon each other. The former Northern Pacific Railway, the Great Northern Railway, the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and the Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway merged in 1970 to form the Burlington Northern Railroad, with Lou Menk as its first President. As unofficial spokesman for the industry, be had, for years, conducted a tireless effort to educate shippers, lawmakers and the general public of the single most critical problem confronting the railroad industry, the strangle bold of government regulator.]

The pioneers in pressure hydrometallurgy have provided a solid foundation during the past four decades. The pressure techniques are now capable of being used to push back the frontiers in the winning of metals. Pressure hydrometallurgy has been used to meet the objectives of extracting metals; purifying metal solutions, recovering metals; and rendering waste streams acceptable for disposal to waste repositories and the environment. Some examples of each of these functions are briefly reviewed. The applicability of pressure techniques to the recovery of precious metals is discussed.

During the past few years monitoring systems have been installed to measure the effects of environmental changes on the ground-water resource. The design of a monitoring system depends upon the designer's perception of how the environmental factors merge with his perception of the ground-water flow system. The validity and representativeness of measurements made during a monitoring program depend upon the validicy of the designer's perceptions and concepts. To optimize the design of a ground- water monitoring program the designer should make preliminary measurements to confirm his assumptions.

With the occurrences of serious mill structural failures on both ball and primary mills, the mining industry has entered the era of detailed fabrication specifications. Such specifications, however, have been developed as individual entities, often by people not related to the mill design function. Therefore, there has been no effort to relate mill failure or safety to the existence or elimination of specific fabrication flaws; that is, no cause-effect failure relationships have been developed. The omission of this step produces a specification which can be termed uneconomical at best. The present paper attempts to fill this void, by reviewing methods for design consideration of flawed structures, and describing experimental tests used to tie such data to a meaningful quality assurance program in fabrication.

Introduction Gravity concentration may be defined as that process where particles of mixed sizes, shapes, and specific gravities are separated from each other by the force of gravity or by centrifugal force. The nature of the process is such that size and shape classification are an inherent part of the process in addition to separation on the basis of specific gravity from whence the process got its name. Mother nature has long practiced this form of mineral concentration by concentrating such heavy and relatively indestructible minerals as gold, platinum, cassiterite, ilmenite, zircon, and diamonds in placer or beach sand deposits. Once freed of their host granitic or other rock through natural weathering processes, these minerals are then subjected to stream or wave action producing a natural classification and concentration of the heavy minerals. Gravity concentration dates back to antiquity and was certainly the first ore concentration process used when selective mining and hand sorting would no longer suffice to produce the quality of concentrate desired. Forerunners of the present day sluice box and panning techniques were undoubtedly used by the ancient Egyptians on the upper Nile to separate gold from stream gravel. By the second century BC the extraction of gold from veins in quartz was well detailed by Agatharchides, but there is evidence that gold was brought into Egypt from the south as early as the XI1 Dynasty (~1900 BC).1 Most assuredly gravity concentration devices were used during the later Bronze Age to separate the heavier tin and copper minerals from their lighter gangue minerals. The Athenians used an elementary form of Rowing film concentration at their lead-silver mines at Laurium,2 and elementary jigging using wicker baskets was also probably developed at this time. Agricola's famous treatise De Re Metallica3 demonstrates that by the 16th century gravity concentration technology was well advanced and a large number of devices had been developed. Chinese

INTRODUCTION From the first historical records of the discovery of uranium as an element and the attempted classification of its minerals in the early 18th century-through its first uses in pigmentation and the coloring of glasses and ceramic glazes-until 1939 when it was discovered that the isotope U235, was fissionable, uranium oxide in the form of pitchblende ores and concentrates (produced mainly in Bohemia, Canada, and the former Belgian Congo) in recent times was the source of uranium compounds incidental as byproducts to the recovery of radium from this invariable associated source. In 1938 this byproduct production from pitchblende concentrates was about 471 st of U3O8, with over 90% from Canada and the Belgian Congo and only 25.85 st from carnotite ores in the United States.1 Under the impetus of the Atomic Energy Commission's (AEC now part of the Energy Research Development Administration) domestic and foreign production incentives and buying programs, and as an initial assurance of atomic armament capability of the United States and the Free World, the growth of the uranium mining and milling industry burgeoned from 1952 to 1962. After a short period of decline, in the second decade and in large commitments beyond, it has again extended its capacity to meet ever-increasing fuel demands of atomic power generation by the electric utilities industry. In 1961 the peak production in the United States alone was 17,758 st of U3O8. Peak aggregate domestic and foreign deliveries of 34,581 st of U3O8 to the AEC occurred in 1960.z Canada's maximum delivery of 13,506 st of U308 was made in 1959. These peak and continued productions in the Free World are largely from: the Mesozoic (Jurassic) and Tertiary (Eocene) sandstones in the United States; the quartz pebble conglomerates of Canada and the Witwatersrand; pegmatites, Jurassic limestones, and Precambrian complexes, with less but significant production; the phosphoria, where byproduct production is minor. This uranium production in the form of precipitated concentrates has come from the milling of ores from these sources, both directly and by retreatment of gold cyanidation tailings on the Witwatersrand. Milling of crude ore has followed these processes: conventional crushing and size preparation, ore drying when required, salt roasting for high vanadium ores and byproduct vanadium recovery, carbonate or acid-leaching processes, classification sand-dine separations or countercurrent decantation (CCD) circuits and complete liquid-solids separations, resin-in-pulp (RIP) or liquid-liquid (solvent) ion-ex- change extractions, clarification of pregnant liquors, precipitation, filtration and washing, sodium and vanadium removals, and drying or roasting and packaging of the high-grade, high-purity uranium concentrate commonly referred to as "yellowcake." Coupled with the hazards and control of dust generation incident to conventional crushing and milling operations, more stringent control of airborne respirable and ingestible radioactive particulates and the protection of personnel against definitive external radiation are inherent to uranium milling. Impoundment and control of tailings and other effluents of uranium milling are more restrictive than in conventional practice, be- cause long-term disposal and containment of the uranium series of radionuclides, whether in solution or in solid form, are requisite to uranium milling and are made manadatory under regulatory agencies of government. 2. GEOLOGY AND MINERALOGY OF URANIUM Early Uses and Byproduct Production of Uranium Uranium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 but had little commercial importance until the discovery of uranium fission by Hahn and Strassman at the close of 1938. The well-known uranium ores of Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia, the Congo, and the Colorado Plateau were early sources of radium. Minor quantities of uranium were used for small-scale technical and industrial applications, particularly in coloring glass and ceramics, but most of the uranium was discarded. The Colorado ores were also mined later, chiefly for vanadium. Impetus of Armament Capability and Fuel Demands for Atomic Power Following the discovery of atomic fission, uranium became critically important for military applications and, more recently, as a nuclear fuel. Prior to 1966 uranium was acquired in the United States almost solely for use in the weapons program of the AEC. By 1970 the AEC had procured approximately 325,000 st of U3O8 from domestic and foreign sources. Current and future marketability is primarily dependent upon commercial demand for reactor fuel. Spontaneous combustion fires in deep metal mines, through relatively infrequent, are nonetheless cause for considerable concern because they pose a direct threat to the safety of miners and are quite disruptive to mine operations. They often occur in remote, inactive, or abandoned sectors of a mine where access for firefighting is difficult or impossible. Over half of all noncoal mine fires that last more than 24 hours are caused by spontaneous combustion. The most common means of fire control for spontaneous combustion fires is sealing and/or Flooding the affected zone. This process is never easy, but it is made especially difficult (and hazardous) if the fire grows in size and intensity to the point where underground fire- fighting crews must wear self-contained breathing apparatus owing to mine air contamination. The Bureau of Mines has developed and in-mine tested a mineworthy fire detection system capable of sensing the earliest traces of spontaneous combustion, thus enabling mine personnel to initiate fire control operations before hazardous atmospheres are created. This paper discusses system design within the context of the harsh mine environment, and describes laboratory and in-mine performance tests of prototype equipment.

During the 1970's geostatisticians were often accused of not paying sufficient attention to geologic features in the computerised generation of ore reserves. Unfortunately this charge was all -too-often justified and the results of such studies tended to be oversimplified and failed to reveal the full potential of computerised reserve estimation and geostatistical methods. There were some notable exceptions to this trend. Techniques were described that paid a great deal of respect to the geologic characteristics peculiar to certain deposits (Rendu J-M, 1984, Barnes T. E., 1982). At Gold Fields several techniques have been developed for handling the geologic characteristics of ore bodies for reserve estimation purposes. These have developed over time and the evolution of their adoption has been a reflection of our own learning experience from the practical application of computerised reserve estimation on many precious metal s deposits. Problems Typical problems that have been experienced by ourselves and which we have learned to guard against and watch for are: ? INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

The Lower Cretaceous McMurray Formation in northern Alberta contains bituminous sands interbedded with other sediments which form the reject encountered during mining operations. Grade prediction is based on a combination of geological interpretation, computer modelling and past mining experience. In addition to estimates for ore, an accurate estimate of "waste" or "reject," are required for Mine Planning. This study investigates the ability of point-kriging using geostatistics, to augment the existing data base of drill-holes in a study area on Syncrude's leases. This approach enables the assessment of potential "worst" case - "best" case scenarios within the context of Mine Planning.

Dewatering aids are chemicals which enhance the efficiency of mechanical dewatering equipment such as vacuum disc filters and centrifugal dryers. A new dewatering aid has been developed which significantly lowers the moisture content of the mineral concentrate and causes none of the undesirable side effects normally associated with dewatering aids. Highlights of product development from laboratory screening through field testing will be discussed.

Large scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogenous mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to take advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semi- autogenous mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4,476 kW (6,000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 mtpd (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and five variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

In situ mining and extraction is one of the Frontier Technologies that is destined to play an increasingly important role in the recovery of metals and minerals in the future. This premise is based on increasing costs of labor and energy, increasing awareness of environmental considerations and decreasing ore grades in the United States. Up to now, in situ mining has been successfully applied to a few favorable situations for the extraction of some evaporites, copper and uranium. However, because of its unique technical, environmental and economic advantages, this versa tile technology will find broader applications for the recovery of above commodities as well as for others which are currently extracted by hydrometallurgical means. This paper traces the development of in situ mining and extraction; stresses its dependence on interdisciplinary science and engineering; discusses its theoretical, practical and economic aspects; and finally presents potential applications of this Frontier Technology.

A patent issued to J.N.J. Leeman (1957) described the change in performance that takes place when a cyclone is installed in the horizontal position rather than the vertical position. Although this patent was directed more toward improvements that could be realized in the heavy medium cleaning of coal, it contained specific references to reducing the quantity of fine solids that would report in the underflow, and an example for fine sand classification is also included. The three cyclone installations for which data is given in this paper demonstrate that horizontal mounting of large cyclones can improve classification efficiency, eliminate some operational difficulties, and reduce cyclone maintenance requirements in closed circuit grinding installations. Cyclone Experience at Serrana S.A. Each of four grinding circuits at the Serrana S.A. de Mineracao Apatite flotation plant in Brazil have a 2.7 X 4.6 meter (9 X 15 foot) rod mill and each originally operated in closed circuit with two vertically mounted Model D20B (500m nominal diameter) Krebs Cyclones. New feed size is 25mm. The Apatite is liberated at a relatively coarse 35 to 28 mesh grind, but the 500mm cyclones had to be fed at 66 pct. solids in order to obtain an overflow analyzing 12 pct. coarser than 42 mesh. Because dilution water in the cyclone feed had to be limited, classification was inefficient, and there were other significant circuit difficulties as summarized in a recent article by C. A. Busnardo (1984):

INTRODUCTION The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently being constructed for the United States Department of Energy in SE New Mexico. The purpose of the project is to store low level transuranic waste in an underground environment which will ensure a safe atmosphere for the life of the stored waste. Ohbayashi was contracted by the DOE to sink two shafts and underground drift development which will be used to conduct a series of long term experiments in order to finalize the suitability of the geology and the environment for the transuranic waste storage. The two shafts sunk at the WIPP site were excavated around a borehole by conventional methods. The excavation around a borehole eliminates some of the established blind bottom sinking techniques, but creates unusual problems which must be pre-planned and scrutinized closely. An analysis of the slashing to the borehole technique will be given. WASTE SHAFT The waste shaft (w/s) is 5.8 meters (19 feet) in diameter and will be used primarily to transport the radioactive waste to the underground storage area. A pre-existing 1.83 meter (6 feet) diam borehole was taken to a depth of 655 meters (2150 feet) to the existing drift; at this level, a 38 meter (125 feet) sump was installed using blind bottom sinking techniques.
