The control of soils has been found to be one of the highest priority factors influencing the return of reclaimed prime farmland to production. The compaction of soil is primarily a result of the movement of high ground pressure wheel scrapers and dozers over soils during the soils replacement and regarding process and occurs to a maximum depth of about 1.2 m (4 ft) The deleterious effects of soil compaction can be controlled by deep soil loosening to a depth of 1.2 m (4 ft). Most farm tillage equipment can only loosen soils to a maximum depth of 0.33 m (1.0 ft). Deeper soil loosening equipment, in the 0.33-1.2 m (1.0-4.0 ft) range is currently avail- able in the U.S. and abroad which may have potential for application on reclaimed prime farmland. This study has appraised such available equipment and the results indicate that a few manufacturers in the U.S., West Germany, and England market static and vibratory soil loosening equipment which have potential for deeper soil loosening of reclaimed prime farmland.

Since 1975, about a dozen high capacity flotation plants have been installed in the Ruhr district. Depending on the size of the preparation plants, the design capacity of the flotation section is between 100 - 150 t/h. The flotation units generally comprise rougher and cleaner stages in which 5 to 6 or 4 to 5 agitators respectively are arranged in line. The unit volume allocated to each agitator is up to 16 m3. The type of flotation machines, the design of these plants and their instrumen¬tation and control equipment are described in detail. The run of mine coal in the Ruhr district is characterized by a wide variety of the volatile matter. Generally, a distinction must be made between coals with more than 30 - 35% V.M., which are preferably used in power station, and coal with lower V.M. content, which are preferably used as coke-oven feed. The difference between these coals in respect to grain-size distribution, ash cotent and flotation properties will also be described in detail.

The design and construction of a Concentrator based on initial pilot plant work is rarely perfect. Palabora's plant was no exception although the basic objective to produce copper in a safely conservative manner was certainly achieved in a profitable manner. identification of the metallurgical and mechanical deficiencies of the plant through operating experience and a better concept of the minerology of the orebody enabled the development of a more efficient process both in terms of the metallurgical performance and cost effectiveness. To maintain and improve this level of efficiency, continuous inspection and revision of the plant metallurgy and engineering standards is required. In this presentation a few of the investigations and changes are described: 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill. 2.0 An analysis of the environmental condi¬tions in Palabora's grinding circuit and the introduction of high chrome balls as grinding media. 3.0 The role of magnetite in the beneficiation process at Palabora. 1.0 Alternative methods to restrict and eliminate the detrimental effect of critical size material on the performance of an autogenous mill.

Developments in the agricultural use of potassium (K) have been based solely on the essential role K plays in crop production. Crop plants cannot complete their normal life cycle if K is deficient or absent. In fact, no essential plant nutrient other than nitrogen is required in greater quantities. Table 1 shows the amounts of K some crops take up from the soil. Although the exact functions of K in the plant are not well known, its primary role seems to be tied to plant metabolism. Potassium is vital to the process of photosynthesis. When K is deficient, photosynthesis declines, but respiration increases. These two K-deficient conditions. . . reduced photosynthesis and increased respiration ... lower the plant's carbohydrate supply, the end result being poor agronomic crop production. Potassium is also essential to several other plant functions, including the following: 1) Protein synthesis. 2) Water use efficiency, through the influence of K on stomata opening and closing, to maintain the turgidity in plant leaf cells. 3) Translocation of heavy metals such as iron and zinc. 4) Ionic balance. 5) Control of enzyme reactions within plants.

Coal is expected to become an increasingly important source of energy in the future. Coal production has already increased from about 650 million tons in 2975 to about 875 million tons in 1984 (Wilkinson, 1985). The declining trend of labor productivity in the early seventies was a source of concern for Consolidation Coal Company (Consol). To improve productivity, a gradual change from room-and-pillar mining to longwall mining has been taking place within Consol. Consol produces 45 million tons of coal annually with about 70 percent of the production coming from underground mines. Consol introduced longwall mining in the early seventies and currently operates about 20 longwall faces. The longwall faces are in mines in the Appalachian region in the States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. The successful operation of longwall faces has contributed to a recovery of productivity and to an improvement of mine safety.

A cutter vibration monitoring system is described which would map seam strata non-uniformities to permit guidance within the seam. An extremely simple and rugged transducer is used which is compatible with conventional cutters and cutter replacement practices, and believed to be suited to the mining environment. Laboratory tests show that the system can detect bedding planes in otherwise homogeneous material. A data display system which would employ the human operator's natural pattern recognition skill and judgement will be developed, Intended for remote control applications in general, the system is of direct interest for today's continuous excavators in coal or in any other machine excavated bedded deposit.

The Mexican fluorspar industry is faced with and will face serious problems, some of their own making and others beyond their control. However, they still offer the most secure source of fluorspar for North American' consumers. Since 1975, even in light of declining markets, they have, increased then production capabilities' as shown in Table #1. In analyzing Table #1, we note that Compania Miners Rio Colorado has closed down due to their ore reserves being exhausted. Fluorita de Rio Verde expanded their acid grade fluorspar capacity in anticipation of additional North American business. Campania Miners Las Cuevas presumably increased capacity to meet their North American contractual commitments and to supply their own hydrofluoric acid plant (Fluorex) at Juarez, Mexico. Historically, the Mexican fluorspar industry has relied on the United States as the mainstay for their sales. As shown in Tables #2 and #3, the Mexican share of the United States market has moderately decreased. However, as noted in Table #4 the volume loss is substantial as explained below.

The copper segregation process is designed to concentrate oxidized copper ores or mixed sulfide-oxide copper ores which are refractory to normal and cheaper mineral dressing or leaching processes. Such ores contain copper silicates or highly disseminated copper minerals in a gangue not entirely free from limestone or dolomite. Concentra¬tion by flotation is, under these circumstances, not possible and the acid-consuming constituents do not permit acid leaching. A high temperature treatment at 700-800°C, in the presence of a small amount of sodium chloride and of finely divided carbon, concentrates the copper into easily floated metal by a kind of reducing chloridizing roast. The sulfides, if present, are either oxidized in the heating stage and react like oxides or float with the metallic copper in the flotation step. The ores which have the aforementioned characteristics and which are high grade enough to pay for the treatment are scarce, so that the process has only a limited application. Theory of Copper Segregation Sodium chloride, reacting with water vapor and the acid gangue constituents, produces hydrogen chloride which reacts with the copper minerals. The copper is volatilized as cuprous chloride and immedi¬ately reduced on the coal particles by hydrogen emanating from the volatile matter of the coal and from the water-gas reaction. Introduction Alumina (aluminum oxide) is the material from which all the world's aluminum is produced. In the Western World, all the alumina is made from bauxite by the Bayer process. In the nearly 150 years since aluminum was first isolated by Oersted, the metal has grown from a laboratory curiosity to a position of major importance in the world's commerce. In terms of annual production rates aluminum is first among nonferrous metals. Oersted's discovery-reduction of aluminum chloride with potas¬sium amalgam-was improved on by Ste. Claire Deville, whose so¬dium amalgam reduction of aluminum chloride led to the commercial production of aluminum in France in 1855. Ste. Claire Deville's method prevailed until 1886 when Charles Martin Hall and Paul T. Heroult each invented a process for the production of aluminum by the electrolysis of alumina dissolved in molten cryolite. The inven¬tion by Karl Josef Bayer in 1888 of an economical process for making very pure aluminum oxide (alumina) from bauxite established the necessary link between known ores and the Hall-Heroult reduction process. Bayer's work completed the scientific base-the ore bauxite refined to alumina by the Bayer process (U.S. Patent No. 515,895), the alumina reduced to aluminum in the Hall-Heroult cell (U.S. Patent No. 400,766--upon which today's aluminum industry is founded. Small-scale production of aluminum in the U.S. began in 1888 utilizing the Hall cell. By 1903, bauxite properties and a Bayer process refining step had been incorporated into the production activities. On this base the aluminum industry in the U.S. has grown at an annual compounded rate of 15%. Since 1946 the annual growth rate has been 10%.1 The rapid growth of the industry is the result of many factors among which are the existence of widespread bauxite ore deposits; a sound and economic production technology; and the properties of the metal-lightness, strength, ductility, good electrical and heat con¬ductivity, and pleasing appearance, which lead to ever greater de¬mands for aluminum in an industrializing society. At the inception of the industry, the only market that could be found for aluminum was in the production of cooking utensils. How¬ ever, the rapidly accelerating industrial and technological development of the Western World soon created new needs for aluminum, and today aluminum is marketed in a broad range of industrial, commer¬cial, and consumer applications. The principal uses for aluminum are:' building and construction, 22%; transportation, 18%; electrical, 13%; packaging, 11%; consumer durables, 10%; machinery and equipment, 7%; other, 19%. The 1974 production of primary alumi¬num in the world was 14.5 million short tons, which at an approximate ingot price of 40¢ per lb puts a value of $11.6 billion on the industry product prior to fabrication. While aluminum is widely distributed in the earth's crust and is a major constituent of many rocks and soils, to date no method of extraction of aluminum from such nonbauxite material has been brought to commercial practice in the Western World. In the USSR alumina is produced by the complex processing of nepheline syenite, but elsewhere all commercial production of alumina is from bauxite. A brief discussion of recent developments and other processes for alumina is included in the subsection "Other Processes for Alumina," page 19-15. In early 1973, a major U.S. aluminum producer announced the successful development of processes for the production of aluminum from aluminum chloride. This achievement promises to exert a major influence on the future of the aluminum industry. In the initial com¬mercial application of this new technology, Bayer alumina will be chlorinated, and the aluminum chloride then reduced by electrolysis. Important claims for the new processes are lower energy requirements (one-third less than obtainable in Hall cells) and reduced labor costs. Capital costs are said to be no greater than for conventional plants. While the announced intention is to produce the aluminum chlo¬ride from Bayer process alumina, the new chloride reduction process will eliminate the other raw materials, carbon and fluorides, required by the conventional Hall cells. The electrodes in the chloride cell will not be consumed on the reduction process and the electrolyte will have, as the name indicates, a chloride rather than a fluoride base. 2. Bauxite Definition and Origin. Bauxite is a naturally occurring raw material composed principally of a mixture of one or more of the hy¬drated aluminum oxide minerals gibbsite (Al2O2 3H2O), boehmite (Al2O3 H2O), and diaspore (Al2O, - H2O), and impurities of silica, iron oxide, titania, and other various elements in trace amounts. It is an end or near-end product of chemical weathering. Depending on the amount of iron impurities, the color of bauxite varies from dark red and brown to pink to white. Some bauxite is finely divided, free digging earthy material, while other forms are dense and rocky, requiring explosives in mining. Many gradational forms exist. It is one of the most variable of mineral raw materials in chemical composition and physical appearance. It is generally believed that bauxite deposits resulted from intense chemical weathering of aluminum-bearing rocks or formations under tropical or subtropical conditions with alternating wet and dry sea¬sons. Topographic conditions were favorable for drainage and the in-situ accumulation of aluminum, iron, and titanium oxides. There was low to moderate topographic relief with a minimum of erosion during long quiet periods in earth history.2 The occurrence of bauxite is widespread and it has been found on all continents except Antarctica. Production was reported from 27 countries in 1974, at which time total world production was over 79 million metric tons. Of this production 76% was from seven coun¬tries-Australia, Jamaica, Surinam, Guinea, USSR, Guyana, and Greece-which ranked in that order of production. The health and safety of employees, efficiency of the operating system and production are paramount goals in underground coal mining. The section foreman assumes responsibility for making his part of the total system function to meet these goals. However, section foremen often have not been prepared to assume the full range of their responsibilities upon becoming a supervisor. This discussion addresses the full range of section foreman responsibilities and concomitant authority. Management principles that must be mastered by him are presented, and performance expectations as well as criteria for their evaluation are examined. The benefits realized from effective foreman training are discussed.

Coal/pyrite fines were froth floated in a laboratory cell to examine the rate of pyrite recovery during conventional coal flotation. The effects of collector, particle size and carbon to total sulfur ratio on the kinetics of recovery were investigated. These data coupled with microscopic examination suggest that miniscule amounts of coal that remain attached to the pyrite surface affect the rate of flotation of pyrite.

Coal is becoming increasingly important as a major energy source in the face of the world's depleting energy mainly based on oil reserves. Coal is by far the most abundant fossil fuel both in the United States and abroad. Currently, because of increased mine mechanization, the fineness of preparation plant feed is increasing. Further, in the future as the grade of coal diminishes and the sulfur content increases, upgrading preparation of coal is very important. Because the density of coal is less than that of rock materials that occur as impurities, coal is separated from such waste largely by gravity-controlled processes for particle size between 5 inches and 28 mesh. If the size of coal particles is below 28 mesh, froth flotation is a good method for upgrading fine coal. Previously, numerous investigators have tried to upgrade coal values by froth flotation(1-16) and have achieved moderate success. However, the recovery and grade of coals in the concentrates are not always satisfactory, especially when the particle size is small. In general, when the size of coal is below 100 mesh, the above methods suffer from poor grade and low recovery. The reason for this is that as size decreases, the effects of gravity diminish, and other forces take effect.

The breakage parameters of phosphate ore were determined by batch first-order grinding studies in a laboratory ball mill according to the procedures described in the text by Austin, Klimpel and Luckie, using a slurry density of 70 weight percent. The results were scaled to five larger mills of 0.56 m diameter by 0.91 m length (2 ft. by 3 ft.), 0.82 m by 1.52 m (3 ft. by 5 ft.), 3.36 m by 7.90 m (11.5 ft. by 25 ft.), 4.41 m by 9.10 m (14.5 ft. by 30 ft.), and 5 m by 11.1 m (17 ft. by 36 ft.), assuming equilibrium ball charges for the full-scale mills. The results were used to predict product size distribustions and capacities for batch grinding in the 0.56 m and 0.82 m diameter mills and open circuit grinding in the 0.82 m diameter and larger mills using a one-large/two-small reactors in series model fitted to the residence time distribution measured in the 4.41 m diameter mill. The simulated results were compared to plant data for ranges of mill capacities. It was found that the simulated product size distributions were in good agreement with the experimental values below the 70% passing sizes, but did not agree so well in the top sizes. The predicted capacities were in approximate agreement with experimental values for the pilot-scale mills, were about 7 percent too high for the 3.36 m and 4.41 m diameter mills and about 25 percent high for the 5 m diameter mill. Use of the Bond method with the measured Work Index of the phosphate ore gave capacity predictions that were 45 to 150 percent too high.

Precious metals are commonly believed to be recovered along with sulfide minerals in flotation, but a few neutron activation analyses showed that the recoveries of gold and silver were unexpectedly low. Recoveries of platinum group metals remained unresolved due to interferences in the analyses. Electron micro-probe, scanning electron microscope and scanning auger microprobe analyses have identified nickel arsenide minerals in the ore and confirmed a close association of platinum group metals with the arsenide minerals as minute inclusions. These results indicated a need for re-evaluation of flotation procedures which have so far ignored special problems related to arsenide minerals. The electrochemical and flotation behaviors of nickel arsenide and their implications to the flotation recovery of arsenide minerals from copper-nickel bearing Duluth gabbro are presented.

This paper examines the existing mining schemes and equipment used Peculiarities of oil sands surface mining and their influence on equipment selection, utilization and mining schemes are described. Recent developments undertaken to improve mine productivity are also dealt with together with some notes on proposed measures to obtain further gains in productivity.

HISTORIACAL INTRODUCTION Mineral processing has three principle branches, to quote Taggart, "Ore Dressing, which comprises the methods of separation of solids in inorganic crude by means which do not affect substantial chemical change; Extractive Metallurgy, which utilizes chemical reactions for separations of constituents from solids in inorganic crude; and, Fuel Technology, which employs both physical and chemical methods for separating and rearrangement of liquid gaseous and solid components in crude oil and natural gas, tar sands, shale oil, or coal." The scope of this handbook covers the first two classifications, that is, "ore dressing" and "extractive metallurgy," which have been combined in one term: "mineral processing." For a brief history of the development of mineral processing, one could well refer to the Introduction, Sec. I of the Handbook of Mineral Dressing by Taggart, Froth Flotation, Principles of Mineral Dressing by Gaudin, and the original Richard's Ore Dressing, volume No. 1, first published in 1903-1905. In these references and the references given in them a coverage of the history of "ore dressing" can be found and studied at the reader's leisure. For the history of extractive metallurgy as well as ore dressing, the bibliography in General References, taken from a History of Ex¬tractive Metallurgy by F. Habashi, will give a good background for those who are interested in more detail on the history of metallurgy in general. Mineral processing covers a very wide field as is illustrated by the topics discussed in Part II of this handbook and dates back to the early history of man which started with the production and use of native minerals such as gold, silver, copper, mercury, and meteoric iron which were washed or picked from deposits on the surface of the earth and worked because of their malleability. Later, melting was discovered and then it was possible to cast objects of these metals, excluding mercury. The discovery of a method for reducing the metal¬lic oxide probably was developed from melting fragments of oxides or roasted sulfides with charcoal, so that the native metal could be produced in simple blast furnaces such as are used today in rural parts of Spain, China, and elsewhere. Eventually, it was learned that iron could be readily worked when hot, which resulted in its replacing bronze for tools, weapons, and cutlery. I'm glad this meeting is being held in New York. First, because the city is close to my home in New Jersey, only 35 minutes from Times Square ..... if I were to come to Times Square between two and three in the morning. Otherwise it takes two hours. But even more important is the fact that all of you good people from around the country and around the world will enjoy the unique experience of that warm friendly atmosphere in the greater metropolitan area, something that you won't see any place else on the face of the earth. Seriously, the greater metropolitan area has been a large part of my industrial, cultural and spiritual experience. There are many aspects of it which I find disagreeable but on net I would rather live in this area, at least for the time being, than any other area of the United States. As a consultant I find contact with financial institutions, corporate headquarters, information sources and a great many production and research facilities a valuable asset to my activity.

The Wing Hill Garnet Deposit, located near Rangeley, Maine, forsed through assimilation of Early Paleozoic metasediments by an intrusive Devonian gabbro. The resulting ore body is exceptionally large and high-grade, consisting of 50-70% almandine garnet. Following open-pit quarrying, the ore is trucked to Industrial Garnet Extractives' mill in West Paris for final processing. Two grades of abrasive are produced - a pure, premium grade INDUSTRIAL GARNET and the Lower grade co-product IGE UTILITY GRIT, both of which are available in a variety of sizes. INDUSTRIAL GARNET is marketed world- wide into a diverse marketplace including both loose grain and bonded applications.

The authors have previously described a method of enhancing the magnetic susceptibility of pyrite by a mild alkaline oxidative pressure leach (Hall et al, 1985). This finding was successfully applied to enhance the magnetic desulfurization of an Eastern Canadian coal (Hall and Finch, 1984). This paper reports on enhancement of the magnetic susceptibilities of iron-containing sulfides (arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite and marcasite) upon similar treatment. It also explores the application of this pretreatment in the magnetic separation of fine sulfides from oxides and other sulfide minerals. In the latter case galvanic interference effects have a serious impact on the potential use of this method.
