Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. This paper presents the art of on-stream particle size and elemental analysis used at iron ore concentrators, followed by the results and experiences from several sites.Online particle size analysis is rather common at medium- to large-sized concentrators. Online X-ray fluorescence (XRF) elemental analysis, however, is only used in some iron ore concentrators, while it is a routine practice in base metal concentrator plants. Online XRF analysis is applicable for process monitoring and control down to four to five per cent silica by measuring Fe assays accurately. With lower silica content, direct measurement of silica and other light elements is required. Some light element analysers that are based on the prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA) method have been developed, but they have not performed up to expectations with slurry analysis. Other methods have been tried though these have not been used beyond prototype installations. Operating online light element slurry analyser installations are not common in iron ore applications.There is an economic incentive to mine lower and variable grade iron ore resources, which require concentration and removal of several impurities to produce high-quality concentrates for pellet production. Monitoring such operations by on-stream analysis has significant economic benefits, and there is a need to develop a dependable slurry online analyser for Si, Al, Mg and other light elements. "In this paper, the reduction and separation behaviour of iron and slag in carbon composite iron ore pellets has been investigated experimentally using an electric resistance furnace simulating a rotary hearth furnace process. The factors that affect the formation of iron nuggets, such as temperature, holding time, molecular ratio of C/O and basicity, are discussed. Results show that the reduction of iron ore, carburisation of reduced iron and the composition and quantity of slag are very important for producing iron nuggets. Through optimisation of process parameters, iron nuggets can be formed below 1300¦C when holding time is 20 minutes, C/O is 0.7 and basicity less than 0.5. Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) fines from Western Australia is a hematite and limonite mix characterised by high crystal water content. Due to its higher supply capacity and lower prices, the Wuhan Iron and Steel Corporation (Group) intended to use more FMG fines in the sinter mix. It is understood that sinter quality is closely related to its microstructure featured by the hardness and brittleness of different mineral phases, the content of micro pores, and trans-cracks. In order to maintain sinter qualities such as tumble index, reducibility and so on at higher FMG fines blend ratios, a research project was initiated to study the effects of the FMG fines blending ratio on sinter microstructure. Research results showed that at higher FMG fines ratios, the hardness of hematite and magnetite were both decreased while the hardness of calcium ferrite showed a tendency to decrease. The number of cracks that were generated during Vickers hardness measurement in various mineral phases decreased, but their length was shortened, and the variation of crack lengths increased. The contents of hematite and magnetite were also reduced and the reduction of magnetite was clearer. Also the content of calcium ferrite and pores rose and the magnitude of the increase of pores was greater. Among all the mineral phases in sinter cakes, the Vickers hardness of hematite was highest within the range of 879 N/mm2 ~ 942 N/mm2, and therefore the decrease of its content in sinter and the enhancement of its brittleness, ie the number of cracks increased, were harmful to sinter strength. Flinders Mines is an iron ore explorer and developer with a tenement package located in the Hamersley Ranges region of Western Australia, approximately 70 km north of Tom Price. Exploration over the past five years has identified a Global Resource in excess of 900 Mt at a grade of 55.2 per cent Fe (+50 per cent Fe cut-off). This resource is spread across multiple deposits and has been divided into a number of mineralisation type domains. These domains are comprised of transported hematite rich detrital iron deposits (DID) and goethite dominant channel iron deposits (CID) as well as in situ bedded iron deposits (BID). The BID at PIOP is low in alumina and silica with a high calcined iron content making it an attractive exploration target. BID exploration techniques include a combination of mapping, structural analysis, downhole gamma logging and 3D geological modelling. The Hamersley Province in Western Australia hosts large iron ore deposits. Each deposit displays various iron ore types that were defined on their metallurgical properties, especially in terms of porosity and mineralogy. Conventional porosity and mineralogy information on iron ore types are provided on 2D thin sections using automated image analysis with scanning electron microscopy (SEM)-based techniques combined with chemical analyses. However these techniques cannot accurately quantify the 3D porosity. High-resolution X-ray computed tomography (HRXCT) is a non-destructive technique providing a 3D image of the sample with a resolution close to 0.5 - 0.7 ¦m for samples size of up to few centimetres in length. 3D image analysis using customised algorithms now provide accurate quantitative porosity and mineralogy of iron ore types.CITATION:Fonteneau, L C P J, Godel, B and Ramanaidou, E R, 2013. The regeneration of the ceramic filter medium used in iron ore dewatering is often done by combining backwashing, ultrasonic cleaning and chemical regeneration. Of these three, the first two are applied more frequently, whereas chemical regeneration is done only when needed, eg once a day. Chemical regeneration of the ceramic filter medium in iron ore processing can involve the use of oxalic acid to dissolve the iron oxide particles. Even while performing simple chemical regeneration, meaning no ultrasound to assist the cleaning, the changes in the performance and in the structure of the filter medium could not be explained solely based on the dissolution or the removal of particles from the surface. Good regeneration results were obtained at 35 and 50¦C, meaning that the final permeability of the filter medium corresponded to that of unused filter medium. Permeability of the medium after regeneration at 15¦C was also good after 12 h, but did fall short of those regenerated at higher temperatures. In response to the implementation of a new schedule for iron ore fines in the International Maritime OrganizationÆs (IMO) International Maritime Solid Bulk Cargoes (IMSBC) Code, improved measures for the management of moisture have been developed. In particular, prediction of cargo moisture allows management of iron ore fines within the supply?chain to facilitate the safe?shipping of iron ore fines.An ARIMA model, augmented to allow for shipment tonnage, has been developed to predict the moisture level from previous shipments of the same product. The model explains about 60 per cent of the moisture variance. "The Mbalam Iron Ore Project covers mineralisation in two areas of metamorphosed hematitic banded iron formation (itabirite) in the north-west Congo Craton; namely at Mbarga in south-east Cameroon and at Nabeba in north-west Republic of Congo. The site locations are shown in Figures 1 and 2.The Mbalam Project history is an example of a compressed, yet highly successful, exploration timetable. Due to the thick inaccessible equatorial forest location, the first access was by helicopter in February 2007 at the Mbarga Deposit. Drilling commenced four months later in June 2007. A maiden JORC Code compliant æhigh-grade hematiteÆ inferred mineral resource (190 Mt at 60 per cent Fe) was defined in May 2008, followed by a maiden æitabirite hematiteÆ inferred resource in July 2008 (1.2 Bt at 37 per cent Fe). Subsequently, road access to Nabeba was established in January 2010, with a maiden high-grade hematite inferred mineral resource (200 Mt at 63 per cent Fe) identified only five months later in June 2010. A maiden itabirite hematite inferred resource at Nabeba was announced in June 2012 (1.4 Bt at 34 per cent Fe). The success of the exploration programs has been due to two main factors: Establishment of high-quality camps and facilities at Mbarga and later at Nabeba in Republic of Congo. Exploration support included satellite links for site servers and communications, field logging computers, data acquisition software, an on-site sample preparation laboratory, portable hand-held X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and company-owned drill rigs from 2009. An experienced and dynamic technical support group based in Perth to provide database facilities, data evaluation, internal auditing and software support, resulting in expedited resource estimation and economic evaluation with state-of-the-art mining software. In June 2012, Sundance Resources Ltd announced the current mineral resources for the project of 775.4 Mt at 57.2 per cent Fe of high-grade hematite and 4.047 Bt at 36.3 per cent Fe of itabirite hematite. In December 2012, high-grade hematite ore reserves of 436.3 Mt at 62.6 per cent Fe were announced. These world-class resources and reserves have been delineated and evaluated in a very rapid time frame. This paper reports two aspects of reactivity of complex Ni-Cu sulphide ores: variations that result from stockpiling of a nickel-copper sulphide ore in the Sudbury area and its consequences on flotation behaviour, especially in terms of metal losses to scavenger tails. In relation to the first aspect, self-heating characteristics of the stockpile were carried out by monitoring the internal temperatures of the stockpile. Six heat sensors were installed with respect to external conditions in local weather during a 7-month period. Stockpile temperatures were mainly influenced by ambient temperature with some retardation effects. The maximum temperature recorded in the stockpile was 44 °C. Samples taken at the beginning and at the end of stockpiling were tested to assess variations in behaviour of the rougher-scavenger flotation. Relative to the fresh ore, nickel and copper losses in flotation of the stockpile fines were 5.0 and 3.6 %, respectively. The fresh ore yields concentrates with higher nickel grades due to differential flotation behaviour of pentlandite and pyrrhotite relative to the stockpile fines, which exhibit a truly bulk flotation behaviour at least during the first 3 stages.

This paper presents a case study in which a slope failure was observed on the west wall of the LAB Chrysotile mine in the vicinity of the main ramp in January 2010. Airborne LiDAR results were used to evaluate slope geometry before and after the failure occurred. Back analysis of the failure was performed to assess rock mass properties at the slope scale using various numerical techniques: limit equilibrium, finite elements and fracture networks. The various approaches correlated well with field observations.

Safety management is an important mortal and business function in construction. Contractors have traditionally tracked and reported lagging indicators, e.g. fatalities and lost-time accident rates, to measure their safety performance and stay in compliance with relevant regulations. Over the last several decades, contractors became more proactive in their approach to safety and developed programs that track leading indicators, e.g. safety audits and safety climate. In particular, safety climate measures workers? perception of safety management and its effectiveness in the workplace. Past literatures indicated that, while some industrial construction contractors ignore safety climate measures, others are limited by a lack of a formal means to measure safety climate. In this study, a survey approach is used to measure an industrial construction contractor?s safety climate through three key areas: management commitment, job control, and general safety climate. As a pilot study, a total of 214 individuals at a fabrication facility participated in the survey to verify the validity and effectiveness of the proposed survey approach. This survey study also confirms that job control and management commitment have a positive correlation and that worker demographics have an effect on respondents? perceptions of management commitment.

Scaffolds are temporary structures built to facilitate construction activities on site. A considerable amount of resources are allocated to scaffolding on industrial projects. Variability in geometrical features and space accessibility of structures on industrial projects, in addition to involvement of different trades that share the use of scaffolds, requires an extensive understanding of scaffolding requirements. Hence, it?s important to plan and estimate scaffolding man-hour requirements for the different construction areas on an industrial site. Contributing factors involved in such estimates include the list of trades that work in a construction area, trade working hours, volume of work, geometry of equipment erected, etc. A simulation template for predicting scaffold erection man-hour values for individual construction areas in an industrial project was developed in Simphony 4.0. The template is based on mapping the geometry of equipment and other factors to man-hours of scaffold work. The template facilitates the use of distributions as inputs and produces a range estimate of scaffold man-hours. The mapping is based on a linear regression model derived from existing project data from PCL Industrial Management Inc. The template is being further developed to incorporate the ability to predict scaffold erection schedule and material requirements based on construction work areas or equipment lists of an industrial construction project.

Traditionally, airflow requirements for diesel equipment operating in underground environments such as mines and tunnels were determined by multiplying the vehicle power by a ventilation rate that was either mandated by regulations(s) or determined empirically from known quantities. In some cases, utilization factors were further used to adjust (reduce) the total airflow calculations for a diesel equipment fleet. However, in light of the drastic reductions to diesel equipment emissions mandated by the US EPA Tier IV and EURO Stage 4 regulations, there is currently a great deal of uncertainty in the underground mining industry among those responsible for the ventilation of planned new mines or the expansion of current mines. Tier IV engine standards mandate a reduction of DPM and NOx of approximately 95%, but can ventilation rates at mines with Tier IV equipment (or equivalent) really be reduced by a factor of twenty? This paper outlines some of the factors that affect the airflow required for the ventilation of modern diesel-powered equipment and examines how they can be applied in determining a reasonable ventilation rate for Tier IV compliant equipment operating in subterranean environments.

The changes in defects patterns or in element condition index during visual inspection of bridges are primary concerns for inspectors. This paper presents a new approach for change detection of defects in bridges by identifying changes in texture patterns through spectral analysis of digital images. The commonly used method for change detection is image differentiation. This subtraction method requires images to be of same size, scale, and rotation. However, no two images are same in real practices. Thus, image registration is required to align images and to produce change maps. This process is tedious and it is difficult often to achieve a good registered image. But, the change detection task can be readily modeled in frequency domain for texture patterns discrimination and also for quantifying their properties. This paper proposes a novel approach for change detection by transforming digital images into Fourier spectrum. In new coordinate system, 1-D signature functions can be drawn which facilitates easy comparison of textures in different directions. The proposed methodology provides useful tools for comparison of inspection history graphically and quantitatively. In practice, expensive sensors are used to detect subtle change in defect patterns. The proposed method can be used to detect any subtle change in defect patterns using digital images at much lower cost.

This paper presents an experimental study conducted to facilitate the use of RFID on construction job sites. The study focuses on deployment settings to provide data acquisition with higher accuracy for indoor location sensing. It provides extension to the state-of-the-art in this field as it addresses the impact of metal media proximity to RFID tags, the reasonable duration for data capturing, number of RFID tags employed and the distance between them. Low cost passive RFID tags were used in the experiments where each tag is used as a reference point with a known location. Five hundred and forty (514) experiments were conducted in lab environment using a 3m by 3m test bed that is dynamically rearranged to generate 15 test beds and a total of 67713 data sets were collected and analyzed. The collected data were captured from nine locations for each test bed at four time intervals. Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) was used as the main attribute for signal measurement to process the captured data. Results of the data analysis performed are studied under four main categories: duration, number of tags, locations of tags and metal interference. The best duration was found to be the 15 second in the test bed with the least number of tags; as the short amount of time to capture data did not allow creation of a lot of interference among the emitted signals. Within each test bed, errors occurred most at points where the received signals were not well distributed in a 360 degree vicinity of the data capturing point. It means that the center point of each test bed resulted in lowest errors and the points located on the extremities led to the highest errors. Finally, metal objects were found to have major impact on the accuracy of the captured data; to the level where reliable values for errors could not be calculated in the test beds attached to metal objects. In summary, the results of the experimental study and related findings are expected to provide guidelines to the users of RFID technology for localization in building construction.

In Romania, there are significant lignite and brown coal reserves hosted by different regions of the country. The most important lignite bearing zone of the country situated in the North ? West part of Oltenia region and which covers a surface area of 2,500 km2 and host a total reserve of 3.0 billion tons of lignite, of which more than 95% can be exploited by open cast method. The paper deals with the existing geological and mining conditions of the zone , the distribution by mining basins and exploitation perimeters, the open cast working technologies and the economic outcomes obtained throughout the time. Years ago, for the improvement of the economic situation as a whole and in each unit, a large production reorganization, technology update and modernization process was started up. There are described the rehabilitation measures of the technological lines and modernization of the equipments of the production flow-sheet, measures developed at present, too and which will still continue in future. There are mentioned the equipments considered, the components under modernization and the economic outcomes obtained so far. At the end of the paper there are presented the future actions for the equipment modernization and perspectives of the lignite deposit exploitation to meet the national economy requirements of solid fuels.

Copper mining operations have increased in Iran in the past decades due to price increases and potential for creating jobs in developing countries. Iran consists of many copper mines. The mining operations have a positive economic impact on the region, but may also be the cause of adverse environmental effects. Environmental aspects and the health impact of respirable particulates on the communities and agricultural production in the immediate vicinities have been under scrutiny by the regulatory agencies to ensure sustainable development. The impact of an open-pit mine on the air quality and extent of particulate pollutant dispersion in different directions and times is the focus of this paper. The results of the modeling have been validated through ambient air monitoring. Monitoring stations were installed in different areas within the mine unit operations and around it including background areas where PM10 values were 7 µg/m3. Outside the Complex, particulate concentrations were monitored in 9 different stations and up to 25 km distance. Modeling of point, area, and volume sources was conducted using a 9- year meteorological database. The results showed that particulate quantity decreases rapidly below local standard value of 150 µg/m3 at 2.5 km around the mine and the main pollution is due to the crusher and tailings dump areas. Model outputs were compared to the actual values measured by the air quality monitoring network including villages and crop fields. High overall correlation of about 76% was obtained for most of the locations but lower values were reported for more complex terrain in the region. Remedial actions recommended included road water spraying and better management practices to avoid overloading trucks.
